broadcasting live on Maritime Radio on ninety six point five
FM and on the Maritime website.
Speaker 4 (00:22):
Welcome to our monthly Millwall News and Views show at
Maritime Radio. I'm George Lempi your host from Swanlea, and
I'm thrilled to introduce our fantastic panel, the dynamic duo
from bex Ley, Ed Robinson and Patricia Maslin. Even they're
laughing at there, along with the ever enthusiastic stand Godwin
(00:42):
from Timsmead. These individuals are not just lifelong Millwall supporters.
They bring a wealth of experience in football broadcast in
Spanish Spain in both region and national radio, as well
as some fastic podcast. As always, we dive into the
Millwall plus were excite did to chat with a former
Lion who represented his country. To kick off things, let's
(01:04):
take a look back at the results from March, except
for Palace because we reviewed that game on the last show.
So Stan, let's start with March. Early March when we
played Bristol City.
Speaker 5 (01:18):
Well yeah, Bristol City.
Speaker 6 (01:19):
I mean it was always going to be a difficult
game because you're playing a Bristol City team are normally
a good side anyway, because and their coach whose name
escapes you for the moment, he's very much into the
passing game. So you always knew it was going to
be difficult and he was always going to have to
be chasing the ball and we couldn't afford to give
(01:40):
it away. And unfortunately on the night they were the
better team, without any question of it, and you know,
and they.
Speaker 5 (01:49):
Made their possession count. We just couldn't.
Speaker 6 (01:52):
We off them puffed, but we never got there. And
you know, and right at the very end they scored
and you know, and that was it.
Speaker 5 (02:01):
You know, it was free.
Speaker 7 (02:02):
It was.
Speaker 5 (02:03):
It was a disappointing performance.
Speaker 8 (02:04):
Really.
Speaker 6 (02:05):
We should have played a lot better and we did
it and we and we paid the price for it.
Speaker 4 (02:09):
And then we went on to Watford pat we lost
that game. We won again. I can't believe it. Yeah,
he couldn't make.
Speaker 9 (02:20):
It out, could Yeah the old cliche, isn't it a
game of two hours?
Speaker 4 (02:25):
We would die?
Speaker 9 (02:26):
First off, Watford deserve their one neil lead. They played
Honeyman on the right wing to deal with Chadowitza, which
he done really well all game. I do I do
think Honeyman is a good player. He gets a lot
of stick, but he's playing out of position. He's a
holding midfielder and he never seems to play there.
Speaker 10 (02:47):
But he done really well that day. Second half.
Speaker 9 (02:52):
I fully expected a change in the team because we
were so dire, but Neil didn't change the team up.
We came out and were a different side. I don't
know what he said to him, but we were really
good second half. Josh Colburn, he seemed a bit isolated,
but he really picked up second half and that was
(03:12):
a beautiful winning goal from him, that looping header.
Speaker 4 (03:16):
Yeah.
Speaker 9 (03:16):
After that really poor forty five minutes to start with,
it turned into a really good game and lucky for
us we come away with the three points.
Speaker 4 (03:25):
Yeah, that was a good win. Actually yeah, and that was,
as you said, a smashing ed. Then we went to
middle sort of march away and we went to Leeds,
which that was a difficult game, wasn't it winning Being
one of the top teams in the league, and you
were there said on that I.
Speaker 11 (03:41):
Was, I didn't go up there, and yeah, I'll been
Leads are a good side I mean they've fallen a
little bit at the moment, but at that particular time
they needed a win and they came out. But I
must say something. We was the best side for the
first three minutes. We came out pretty well, as he goes,
and I watched leads against Portsmouth on the Sunday before
the game and I had no luck in front of
goal whatsoever. Then blow and old what happens on the
(04:03):
third minute, cross comes over, it's Jake Cooper in the
back of the net. We're one nil down and the
place in this championship you don't want to be one
nil down at early doors is Leeds United. Because we're
there backing with the fans and whatever. It raises them,
and it certainly raised their game, but we're stuck in
it and we kept going and every one or two
little opportunities against them to maybe nick a drawer out
(04:28):
of it. And then they finished this off with a
tremendous goal from Tanaka or something's something like that, but anyway,
it was a terrific goal. And yeah, I wasn't surprised,
and I still expect Leeds to be fighting right at
the very end for one of the positions in the
top two. I think I worry for him though, because
if they don't get at the top two, I'm not
sure they're going to win the playoffs. But it may
(04:49):
be a millwall sneaking up on the inside of the
rails that make it in the playoffs. That frightening of
life out of Leeds.
Speaker 4 (04:56):
I mean, the one thing Leeds wouldn't want to do
is getting the playoffs, would it after what's happened? I
think six season the.
Speaker 11 (05:02):
Big club under a lot of pressure. George I just
about got a drawer the day with Lout and Lout
and give them a bit of a running around at
the time. Today I see a bit of that before
our game. But we've done it to them already twice
this season. We've done it at then and we've done
it in the FA Cup, and we wasn't far off
of it in this particular game. But they got that
(05:22):
early goal which settled them right down. I said before
the game we needed to be Neil Neil for about
twenty minutes and then they would be under pressure. But
unfortunately they got a lucky own goal off for Jake Cooper.
But there going it was to be expected. I suppose
to to nil loss and it.
Speaker 4 (05:36):
Would have been a late night for you to get
him back from Leeds.
Speaker 11 (05:39):
Well, seeing I've got detoured around. I think I met
Robin nordin Sherwood foris. At one point I ran not Inham.
Speaker 7 (05:47):
Yeah, it was a long cult journey back George.
Speaker 4 (05:49):
Thanks, thanks, And then we went on to Stoke, which
for us was a was another win, saying.
Speaker 5 (05:59):
Yeah it was and it was.
Speaker 6 (06:01):
And you know, any team that's managed by Mark Robbins,
you know you're going to be in for.
Speaker 5 (06:05):
A tough, tough battle.
Speaker 4 (06:06):
He's a good manager, one of the best.
Speaker 6 (06:09):
I mean, I'm surprised actually commentary got rid of him,
but there we are. But no, it was a tough
game and you know, and I just thought themselves the
longer the game when and we played okay, we did
all right. And you know, because against teams like Stoke
and then, you can't just sit back. You've got to
keep at it on you've got to be on the
front for all the time. And we were doing that,
(06:29):
but for equally so were they. So it was always
going to be a difficult game. And you know, I
always took the view if anybody scored then it was
only going to be the one goal that would would
do it.
Speaker 5 (06:40):
And then you know, right at the very end, I
mean I couldn't.
Speaker 6 (06:43):
I mean it was bizarre because where our sit, which
is at the colblow lane end, because the goal we
got the penalty down the other end. I mean, all
I just see was a mob of players going for
the ball. And the next thing I didn't saw was
the referee pointed and I just thought we first he
was pointing for a goal kick. And even to this day,
I still have not seen what actually happened to give
(07:06):
him to give us the penalty, because when we got
the penalty in full, so if he puts it away
now and then it's game over. And he put it
away nicely, and you know, and it was. But as
I say, whether it and I know I've read and
you would expect it people claiming that, you know, well
it weren't a penalty, it was an all this, But
(07:26):
whether it was and I don't know because I've still
not seen it, so I don't know.
Speaker 5 (07:29):
But anyway, we won and.
Speaker 4 (07:32):
That was it.
Speaker 5 (07:32):
We got back on track.
Speaker 4 (07:34):
It was a great penalty, wasn't it was?
Speaker 11 (07:36):
Yeah, Well I had no idea who was going to
take it. I got to be honest, but at the
time when it was Covid got put down to standing.
That's what happened, and we was all wondering who the
hell was going to take? Yeah, exactly, but Ivanovitch is
definitely I think after taking that looks like he's a
penalty taker.
Speaker 4 (07:56):
I would say that, yeah. I mean he really has
got a goal in him, that boy, isn't he. Yeah,
you know, definitely in all different types of goals. From
what I've seen so far.
Speaker 5 (08:06):
He's a good player, no doubt about that.
Speaker 4 (08:08):
And then we move along we go to Sunderland. Now
it seems like ten long away trick.
Speaker 12 (08:14):
Yeah, that was reported.
Speaker 10 (08:18):
And I must an.
Speaker 11 (08:21):
I'll tell you what. I must admit that was the
coldest place I've ever been. It was whistling around it.
It was a lovely sunny day, but the wind was
blowing and they put you in the top of the
stand and I think they make sure the wind blows
up that way. I don't know, but it was freezing cold.
I didn't think it was a bad performance. Actually at Sundland.
I thought he was unusual for us to get done
(08:42):
by a set piece from a corner where the guy
was left all on his own and couldn't fail but score.
And then Yetson made one of two really good saves
up there that he was a poor penalty, but he
made a fantastic say from an from a guy. But
we was always in the game. We was all what
you could tell the sunder and the Sundland fans themselfs
(09:02):
were nervous, you could see that. And then right at
the very end, I thought Ivanovitch unfortunately didn't control the
ball at a time when we had probably our best
chance of the game.
Speaker 7 (09:13):
And I don't think one old draw wouldn't have.
Speaker 11 (09:15):
Been a bad result or an unfair result for the
way that we played, because we played some nice football
up until the last third. It was the last third
that didn't really work for us again at that time,
but it was. It was a decent performance and it
shows where we're going. That's what I thought about something.
It shows to me the style of played at alex
Neil wants to play, which was a standard be pleased.
(09:36):
A bit of passing around here, no lumping it, a
bit of passing on the floor. And I mean Sunderland
are up there, they'll be in the playoffs. I'm not
sure they're going to be good enough to win the
playoffs if they play like that, but you know it
might be us in the playoffs.
Speaker 7 (09:51):
Yet I can't keep saying.
Speaker 4 (09:52):
That the object for them is to be in the
top two. I think, not end up in the playoffs too.
Speaker 11 (09:57):
They won't get top two now something it's going to
be either Sheffild United, Leeds or that's the free fighting
for it. Something are pretty safe in the middle of
the playoffs, will be in the playoffs, and then it
could be any one or two from there down. I
think you've got West brom Coventry and we are in
a position with six is it six games ago?
Speaker 7 (10:18):
Yeah, a late run, who knows.
Speaker 11 (10:21):
I mean if we were to actually go to Sherrill
United and nickel Windya, then it could all be on.
Speaker 4 (10:25):
But there Yeah, I've had Pet telling me that all day.
Speaker 9 (10:28):
Well, if we've won at Sunderland, we'd have been three
points off the playoffs.
Speaker 4 (10:31):
We would have been we would have been right. So
then we come to today against Portsmouth, which I'm going
to let you all have your sound and we're going
to start with Pat actually.
Speaker 9 (10:41):
Went back to the four four two system, which everyone's
been calling for. That hasn't actually worked for US apart
from today Coburn and even of it. Up front, they
don't seem to gel. But I mean the first half
was okay, it was interesting to watch, fairly even, but
coming out second half, I mean, I think we've started
(11:03):
to really gel together. I'd like to see Aronovics do
more outside the box, you know, fair play to him.
Speaker 10 (11:10):
He's scoring.
Speaker 9 (11:11):
I think he's won US thirteen points this season himself
alone with the goals he scored, so you can't moan
it him. I'd just like to see a bit more.
Speaker 7 (11:21):
Yeah.
Speaker 10 (11:22):
No, I enjoyed today. Nice three points on the app.
Speaker 4 (11:26):
Yeah, and I paid for your meals at the plays game.
Speaker 6 (11:36):
Well, I mean again it was. It was a good game.
I mean, you know we we played well you know
in Portsworth to be fair or a good side, you're not.
You're not dealing with no mug team there. And and
I think they're now safe.
Speaker 5 (11:52):
For a relegation anyway. Personally, I don't think they're going
to go down.
Speaker 6 (11:54):
But but no, it was again it's a tough old game.
And you know when we took the leader though, so
well okay then but this is it.
Speaker 5 (12:02):
We'll win the game. Even if it was by one neil.
Speaker 6 (12:05):
In actual fact, because I sit where I see it,
where's the ball?
Speaker 5 (12:09):
Come over?
Speaker 6 (12:10):
I see a van of its go for it, but
I didn't actually see they must have got the faintings
to touches, because then they went into the net. Not
that I'm complaining, but first I thought he missed the thing.
And then and then and I thought, oh that's it.
And then it was about ten minutes later whatever it was,
and then Ports have equalized, and I thought, oh, well,
here we go.
Speaker 5 (12:29):
This is going to be a drawer.
Speaker 6 (12:30):
And I thought fine, and then right of the last
knockings we scored a second goal. And but the only
thing that bothered me was was a mak wh right
at the very end he had the ball, he come down,
he started messing about with it, and then the next
thing he'd lost the ball and they're on the attack.
And I thought, so if they get an equalizer, now,
(12:51):
I mean they're going to go by me. But and
he would have, and he would have been the blame
for it in all fairness, but they didn't, and we
won the game, and no, and we I had. My
view was I thought we deserve to win the game.
I didn't think we would. I thought it was going
to be a drawer, but we got to go and
that was it, and that's that beat.
Speaker 4 (13:07):
And I think they thought that at that moment in time. Also, yeah,
and Tidy, I should imagine he went on was us.
Speaker 11 (13:13):
Honestly, George, that's the most enjoyable game I've had for
a long while, because I went all the way up
to Portsmouth for that bloody league game excuse me my language,
and then five minutes before the ground with kick off,
they switched the lights out or something that happened to
him and I to drive all the way back again
after standing in the dark for another half hour. So yeah,
I think they thought they had it to be quite honest, Portsmouth,
(13:36):
and you know, fair play to the boys. They picked
it up again. And whilst Ivanovitch will get all the headlines,
I think it's a little note for Casper Donor again.
That was a beautiful cross straight onto his head there
and he's been playing really well Caspar and hopefully it continues.
But Ivanovitch, I think we've got a gym. I'll really do.
And here's one for the books of real moment here.
(13:59):
I gree with Pat he needs to do more outside
the box.
Speaker 7 (14:03):
Outside.
Speaker 11 (14:05):
Yeah, older, and I left to I forgot the Doctor's
straight down to Queen Elizabeth. Let's get myself checked out.
But he's a young kid. He's come from Serbian football.
I keep saying, he's twenty one, he's coming a championship football.
He scored goals. He's got that neck of being in
the right place at the right time. But he's all
(14:25):
round game outside where he needs to be linking the
play a bit more. He tends to go missing a
little bit. But then when the players like that and
he turns up in the box like he did the
day and scores two goals. Who's going to criticize too much?
But for one hundred percent right that he could be
better outside the box and in his play because we
reliant a lot on Coburan at the moment, trying to
(14:45):
hold the ball up and whatever. And Ivanovitch when he
plays in Coburn's position, he doesn't do it enough. But
he's young, He's going to get better. He's a Serbian international,
you know what I mean. He's making his way into
the international squad. And I'll keep saying it from the
word go from with time, we had him it'd be
better next year and if he is, we've got the
(15:07):
right look star on it.
Speaker 4 (15:09):
So that's a round up by the month. We're going
to take a little maritime break and we've been back soon.

Speaker 15 (16:17):
Millll Romans started off the month with a one nilled
feet against Charlton Valiants. They then followed this up with
a three to two victory over stone Wore Unity. They
ended the month with a one nil victory against London Falkens,
which confirms their place in the London Unity League Cup Final.
Millwell Pride were defeated six to two against Charlson Addicks
at the start of the month. They then beat Stonewall
(16:38):
Unity Developed Side four nil. Following on from this, they
confirmed their place in the London Unity League Plate Final
beating eastn Phoenix three nil. Mill Ion S's had a
tough two first fixtures of the month. They were defeated
five nil against Fulham in the League Cup semi final,
before losing again to the.
Speaker 10 (16:56):
League leaders seven nil.
Speaker 8 (16:57):
In the league.
Speaker 15 (16:58):
However, they responded with a ten your victory against Hayward Teeth,
followed by a two two draw against new Haven and
a four to defee from Saltine which in again they
probably deserved more from right.
Speaker 4 (17:11):
Welcome bank, everybody. Let's talk about the Lionesses, Pat, you
were just hearing what Kai had to say there.
Speaker 9 (17:18):
Yeah, some of them disappointing results apart from the ten
year win. Obviously, I'd like to see them doing better.
I'm not sure where they are in the league. But
just to call out that the season doesn't finish with
Millill playing Swansea at the Den. The Lionesses are actually
appearing at the Den. That's on the fourth of May.
They're going to play Ashford United and you can get
(17:40):
tickets now for five pounds, So come along support the
girls and let's cheer them on at the end of
the season.
Speaker 4 (17:47):
And pat for everybody out there as a rich history
with the Lionesses. Over to you Ted talking about the Romans.
Speaker 7 (17:55):
Yeah, I mean the boys bounds back.
Speaker 11 (17:56):
Didn't know. That's the best thing we'll say, because I
know how disappointed they was lose the Chelton. It's not
the game they want to lose, not not the game
we want to It doesn't happen very often, does it,
us losing the child, But there you go. The Romans
did at the start of the month, but they picked
their self up and had two good results following that,
and I'm hoping they're going to have a real good
end of the season. The Romans, they have been a
(18:18):
good side for a long while and they deserve to
keep going on and hopefully winning their Cup as well
as finishing off well in the league.
Speaker 7 (18:26):
I'm not sure about their.
Speaker 11 (18:26):
Fixtures who they've got left to play, but their game,
well they're a good side, good bunch of leads and
fair play, and they bounced back from what was a
disappointed start.
Speaker 8 (18:35):
Of the month.
Speaker 4 (18:35):
Yeah, and staying if you can bring us up to
date with Pride.
Speaker 5 (18:40):
Well, I mean, you know they are.
Speaker 6 (18:44):
They're working progress, so to speak, you know, because they
you know, they it seems each season they get better
and better and better and they're stronger and stronger, and you.
Speaker 5 (18:56):
Know they're coming along quite nicely, you know.
Speaker 6 (18:59):
So I think that if they stick at what, you know,
what they're doing, and obviously they will get get better,
then I think, you know that that will be another
success story like the Romans have been, you know. I mean,
the thing has struck me with all this with then
both teams, it's I mean that the success they have,
(19:20):
you know, it's a continuous scene. Then it's always on
the up. It's never seems to be any big crisis
on whatever. It's just a continuous It's an amazing story really,
But no, I think, no, they'll be okay and and
you know, good lad to them, and then you're just
going from strength and strength.
Speaker 4 (19:39):
Yeah, it's been a great success story. We're going to
take a little break there and have a maritime break.

Speaker 17 (23:28):
It's ubly because he's buried me a few times. I
turned around to Dean one day and I said, I
was having a bit of a tough time down at
the den and I said, you know what, then, our Dean,
I said, if all fails here at Millwall and planing Gords,
I said, I'd make a great undertaker.
Speaker 8 (23:48):
He says, why is that. I said, because I'm going
to bowling myself.
Speaker 17 (23:51):
So so yeah, myself and Dean go back, go back.
Speaker 8 (24:00):
A long way.
Speaker 4 (24:01):
And he's a lovely yes, and a huge fan of one.
Speaker 5 (24:07):
David staying here mate.
Speaker 6 (24:10):
Two play off finals and an f A Cup semi final,
all at Wembley with real Wall. I think I know,
But which one was your favorite?
Speaker 17 (24:21):
Well, it wasn't the skun top game, and it wasn't
getting beat by Wigan in the semi final, and yeah,
it was definitely the one at Swindon beating them one
and getting promoted.
Speaker 8 (24:33):
That was That was some experience.
Speaker 17 (24:35):
That was an absolute peak experience and probably the pinnacle
and the peak in my career and Metah definite, most definitely.
Speaker 6 (24:44):
And you saved the chairman from getting arrested at the
time because he lit up the cigar in the changing room.
Speaker 5 (24:49):
If I remember right.
Speaker 8 (24:51):
That's where John comes down into the changing room.
Speaker 17 (24:53):
Absolutely the later himselves pulls out a massive cuban that
was bigger than me, and I turned around to us
as John, you wine never spare one of them by
any chance. It pulled on another one the road, a
spark going up, and the security guards came run. They
were like, you can't be lighting that in here. We
just after spending six hundred million on the stadium and
you burn it down. And John just looked at him,
(25:16):
sparked it up and said, I'll build a new one.
Speaker 10 (25:24):
I love David's Pat.
Speaker 8 (25:25):
Here are you Pat?
Speaker 9 (25:27):
I'm getting to play for Ireland. When Shay given was
actually the number one keeper, it must have been a
bit tough. Now we want to know how you managed it.
Speaker 10 (25:35):
Was it a bribe? Was it black mail?
Speaker 8 (25:38):
Tell us it was already above.
Speaker 1 (25:43):
Well.
Speaker 17 (25:43):
What actually happened was I got into the squad and
Share was number one. I just got in just in
twenty eleven and I got into the squad the final squad.
I was the thurd choice keeper at the twenty twelve
euros and Shay was coming to the end just after
that turn and Share retired and it looked like here
in Westwood was the kind of sealed on number one
(26:04):
to come in and come in and play.
Speaker 8 (26:07):
I was looking like number two.
Speaker 17 (26:09):
My form was really good the twenty eleven season, first
season back in the Championship, but Milwall I kept twenty
one clean sheets in the Championship.
Speaker 8 (26:19):
Which was a phenomenal return.
Speaker 17 (26:21):
And looking at it now, you know, most most teams
get promoted to the Premier League at.
Speaker 8 (26:25):
Sixteen fifteen, sixteen clean sheets, so.
Speaker 17 (26:28):
That was a great return for myself and I got
me into the Irish team, and yeah, just my I
think my consistency, my performances were very consistent and good
at the time. And TRAPATONI turned around one day and
he said, right, Dave affords me number one goalie for Ireland,
which that's that's.
Speaker 8 (26:48):
A phenomenal, phenomenal statement.
Speaker 17 (26:50):
Yeah, And you know the funny thing is that's at
what thirty two to thirty three years of age, and
I go on to make twenty plus caps and I
don't think there's too many people in the world after
the thirties that make twenty plus claps internationally, maybe one
or two.
Speaker 8 (27:06):
So that made it all the more special as well.
Speaker 10 (27:09):
Excellent.
Speaker 7 (27:10):
Yeah, oh divers stadia.
Speaker 11 (27:13):
Oh my looking back over eight in nine years at
Meal Wool, how would you sum up? And be very careful,
you know we're all massive, real wolf fins, so be careful.
Where you answered is how would you sum up with
your experience as a real wol player?
Speaker 8 (27:29):
How would I sum up my experience? Friendly? We are,
yes exactly. How would I send?
Speaker 17 (27:35):
Blood, sweat, tears and fears. Now, as you started with blood,
there was there was plenty of that. So yeah, it
was as I said, blood, sweat, tears and fears and
some amazing times and great it was. It was an
(27:56):
amazing challenge because I came to the club. What was
I twenty eight? Not many not many first team games
under my belt in the UK, so it was a
major challenge for me to come in as a number
one and establish myself, which I did, and then like
that as well to go on and play. In my
first three seasons I kept played one hundred and fifty
(28:17):
three games consistently, then lost the form and then to
come back into it, get Player of the Year, to
get to Wembley three times. Considering new Wembley was relatively new,
so they were they were amazing experiences and with some amazing,
amazing times and you know, it's it's the funnest time
(28:40):
in my career. It was was was at Melwall, and
Melwall felt felt that home to me. It was it
was my home, you know. And I gave it absolutely everything.
I didn't leave Anton behind and I couldn't give it anymore.
Speaker 11 (28:54):
Yeah, a young inexperienced goalkeeper come up with your dive
and said, oh, Mal would have asked me if I
you know, we're all go there, what would you say
to him?
Speaker 8 (29:03):
Absolutely?
Speaker 17 (29:05):
I believe if you if you can play at Millwall,
you can actually play anywhere.
Speaker 8 (29:14):
You played at Millwall. Everywhere else is just to breeze.
Speaker 5 (29:19):
Yeah.
Speaker 17 (29:20):
I remember going to certain clubs after after I had
left Midwall, and even before Midwall and actually thinking, players,
you find this actually hard playing here?
Speaker 9 (29:29):
I like we tend to ask players who did you
room with on away games? And was it a pleasant experience?
Speaker 8 (29:38):
I actually roomed on my own, so it was very pleasant.
Speaker 4 (29:40):
Was you anti social?
Speaker 12 (29:46):
Yeah?
Speaker 8 (29:46):
Anti social?
Speaker 17 (29:47):
And and to get into the zone, I just like
I just like my own space. I used to get
up in the morning and meditate and I just needed
my own space on my own time, and yeah I was.
Speaker 8 (29:58):
I was studying as well and different thing that look.
So yeah, I just you know, is what you really.
Speaker 11 (30:08):
Made is it wasn't much choice, was it? Withers? And
he didn't want any of them?
Speaker 17 (30:14):
No, no, you said that, but don't tell anyone.
Speaker 4 (30:19):
I was always a pleasure having you on there. As always,
it's great to speak with you. But before you leave us,
could you give us a ticster of what we can
expect from your new book, Being the One it's and
also is it available now?
Speaker 8 (30:34):
Yes?
Speaker 17 (30:35):
Being the One has been a story. It's just about
to be released. First it's coming out on ebook and
that should be there in the next few days and
then in the next week to two weeks it should
be on paperback, then with hard copy on the way.
So it's a story of my life from where I
grew up, how it all began, how I fell in
(30:56):
with love, fell in love football, how I fell out
of lover football, however football, and just through my whole career,
just through my whole journey and the pressures, the highs,
the lows, the the you know, Being the One is
a is a statement that you know, being the one
(31:16):
for club and country, being the one to you know,
break habits, being the ones to you know, be in
the best mindset. And it's been a great story for myself,
and it's been very catalytic and catarctic from myself to
to to do that project. So it's been a great, great,
great as I said, it's been a great experience. And
(31:40):
you know, it's it's it's a good read. It's a
great read actually, and it gives a deeper insight into
the mindset and and the psychology and the depth of
where I came from and what inspired me, motivated me
to have the career I did with within football and
the challenges that I faced in that as well mentally
and emotionally.
Speaker 4 (32:00):
So is it an available now? And where could we
get a copy?
Speaker 17 (32:04):
It will be available in the next couple of days
on Amazon Ebooks. The ebook will be out first, and
then it will be in the next two weeks. It
will be up on Amazon as well also the paperback.
Speaker 4 (32:20):
And before I let you go, you still get down
the then, because well I know, a little while ago
I was stuck in the same queue in the shop
Club shop with you, so I know you my apperances
every now and again.
Speaker 17 (32:32):
Yeah, I ducked down every now and again. My son,
my son still loves going to the den, so I
bring a couple of his mates or whatever and we
get down into the cold blow lane and I'm there
next weekend.
Speaker 8 (32:42):
So I'm looking forward.
Speaker 17 (32:43):
I've got a friend coming over from Ireland and he's
got a colleague coming from New Zealand. He's big into
the Maori culture and he wants to come and experience
a different type of culture.
Speaker 6 (32:55):
And I said, right now, experienced that we're.
Speaker 17 (33:01):
Don't forget exactly a few different types of warriors.
Speaker 11 (33:06):
So you might have to explain the language to it
before he gets.
Speaker 8 (33:12):
A few nice terms of endearment. Will will you?
Speaker 4 (33:16):
Would I be bringing you on the pitch or anything
like that, Dave, No.
Speaker 8 (33:20):
My pitch stays are over. My pitch stays are over.
Speaker 4 (33:23):
Just we didn't expect you to playing gold. We were
just coming giving you a clap out of the pitch.
Speaker 8 (33:29):
Second, there's still one good Dave left to me.
Speaker 4 (33:35):
It's been a pleasure, as it always is, Dave. And
we wish you and the family were the very best mate.
Speaker 8 (33:40):
Lovely lads, and thanks for having me on and thanks
thanks for raving.

wide range of football and sports development programs to thousands

different ages, genders and abilities. Check out the Millwell Community
Trust website.
Speaker 4 (35:56):
Thanks Bethany. I'm George lamp and with me, I've the fence.
I can't keep saying that I have a rather rough
looking panel. Except for Ted Robinson, Patricia Maslin and Stan Godwin.
You have heard a little bit about the Community Trust
and some of the things they do. They make a
fantastic difference to the community. They serve and talking to
(36:20):
the communities. Here is the Millwall Community Trust CEO Sean
Daily talking with Amon Barkley about the recent Milwall Community Day.
Speaker 19 (36:30):
I'm delighted to be with Sean Daily, who joined and
the mill Community Trust in March twenty eighteen after spending
eighteen years as the head of Football and Supports Development
at Charon Athletic Community Trust. The Millwall Community Day, which
celebrates the work of the Trust is partners and community heroes,
(36:52):
has grown and grown since introduced. How did it come
to be and is it a unique event within the
English football Big film.
Speaker 20 (37:01):
About four years ago I spoke to Steve Cavan said that,
you know, I think it's important we celebrate the Community
Trust and the work it does in the local area.
And some clubs have been doing it. They dedicated to
the community, grew it from them. Really, I just sort
of said, look, I want to get all the participants involved.
I want to get all our partners, but I want
to celebrate the success that some of these people have
(37:22):
been the journey on, you know, whether it's our walking
football where it's an employment program, whether it's a military
Kicks program, the Girls Academy, and I wanted them to
sort of celebrate their journey within the club and the
community trust. So what I have noticed though in the
last couple of years, lots and lots of clubs are
now recognizing their community trusts and their foundations and the
(37:45):
work they do and dedicating a match to them. And
it's only going to get bigger for us, you know.
I mean this one we did here was bigger than
it was before. Eight hundred people there as participants. The
only thing that sort of like didn't help us really
was the early cad because we didn't have a long
time to celebrate it. So I wanted to celebrate the
partnership work we're doing as well supporting people. There's lots
(38:08):
of people that come in and help us engage with
those people, you know, whether it's the police, whether it's
the fire brigade, whether it's an employment program, whether it's
a school.
Speaker 19 (38:19):
It's wonderful and can you just give us a flavor
of what to place that day.
Speaker 20 (38:23):
It's sort of like over two sort of areas really
our Lion Center, the indoor site and then the outside.
Now the indoors start kicked off at nine o'clock, so
we had a walk in football. We had a military
vets game, we had a Pan disability game. We had
a Kicks game in there as well, so lots of
our participants playing in a tournament. We also had the
(38:45):
Family FUNDZO dropping employment program as well. And then when
we went out to the car park via the sort
of the fan zo, we had lots of stalls of
some of our partners, good people, like an education program,
where did JC over There were a couple of local schools.
We had police over there, we had the fire brigade
(39:05):
over there, so all the partners we worked with, just
having a stall and sort of engaging with our fans.
Just before kickoff, we gave out a couple of awards
to some of our partners to celebrate the work they've
been doing with us. So with this year and every
year was sort of like give it to a local partner.
This time we wanted to acknowledge our councils about our council.
(39:28):
We wouldn't be able to do the work we do
with it, so we presented award to Lurition Council and
we presented an award to Suffer Council.
Speaker 4 (39:35):
The two boroughs were work in.
Speaker 20 (39:37):
Then we had the mascots on the pitch were minuted children.
We had a guard of honor which was our girls
academy and all that.
Speaker 10 (39:44):
Just before the game.
Speaker 20 (39:45):
At halftime, all our participants walked around the pitch to
be acknowledged by the fans, and then we had a
penalty shootout on the pitch for mcguava. Now they came
off the shirt and let the community trust go on.
It was a sponsor, so we did a penalanty shoot
out for free local children. Those three children have been
invited back for the Portsmouth game, but to have the
(40:07):
Maguava box and they've been brilliant to us, absolutely brilliant.
It was just a great day.
Speaker 19 (40:14):
How do you measure success of community Day?
Speaker 20 (40:18):
I'm measured success by people talking about it. The one
that always I love is when well, I didn't know
you did that. I didn't know our club's got an
employment problem. I didn't know our club's got an LGB
football team. I didn't know our club's got a girl's academy.
That's how I measure success. You know that people are
like going, I, what's unbelievable our club?
Speaker 4 (40:39):
Does?
Speaker 14 (40:39):
You know?
Speaker 20 (40:40):
My thing has always been when I came to this club, was.
I wanted us to be known for something really good
and I always say to myself, we've got to be
the best we can. The best community scheme in the country, brilliant.
If we're the best community scheme in you know, Luijam
and suburb, that'll do for me.
Speaker 4 (40:55):
And I want people to start.
Speaker 20 (40:56):
Talking about Millwall as the work we do in the
community trust and yeah, unfortunately what's happening around Crystal Paris
and lots of things that have come up there, all
the social media has been around, but they do some
great work in the community, know Millwall, and that's what
I really want people to start talk about. But that's
how our messures. It says people getting awareness of us
and being proud of the work the club does in Niclaria.
Speaker 19 (41:20):
Well, thanks Sean. I'm sure our listeners have found that
ever so interesting. Despite the fact that you left Charlton
to come to Milwell.
Speaker 4 (41:29):
We're forgiving that all day long. He's done a marvelous
job at Milwell, that man, and in fact so good
he should be running the football club. But there you go,
that's another story. Before we go on, I just want
to bring up to the panel because yesterday, twenty years
ago we were at Old Trafford. Will we run? Yes,
twenty one years lit'ten not there's been finicky pat. So
(41:55):
it was our semi final against whom yes indeed, and
and of course it was a great win. We were
all there, so staying, shall we start with you? What
was your memories? And that marvelous stayed from the mill
And that's more of us supporters really because we know
what the result was. But for you as an individual
on the day.
Speaker 6 (42:17):
Well, it's hard to explain.
Speaker 12 (42:20):
Really.
Speaker 6 (42:21):
I mean, we because we got there and before we
even get out of the coach the driver said, oh,
he said, look, he said, we've had we've had the
word from the police. He said that win or lose whatever,
after the game, you've got to get back here as
soon as you came because they want to get all
the coaches away and all that sort of which you thought, oh, okay,
that's for it. And I was up there with my cousin. Anyway,
(42:44):
we get into the game and you know, and we're
we're there, and then you've were watching the the game
and then all of a sudden, you know, we get
to half time and I thought, oh, this is all right,
and and then when the second half come, I'm sitting
and I'm standing there and I think, so it seems
to be going. And I looked at it after awhile,
I looked at the clock and I thought myself on
(43:05):
the wall, and I think of myself, we've been playing
more than ten minutes, right, And I said, in my costody,
I said, we've been playing more than ten minutes. He
looks at me, he says, you pratty. He said, it's
a clock. He said, the count downwards, right, And because
I said what and he said, yeah, that's what it was.
He had gone that quick, right, because when when the
whistle went, I mean, it was ecstasy with it. I mean,
(43:28):
you just couldn't and then we then come back and
you know, I mean it was just she just she
just it was It was a day that you could
never forget. And in many ways now when you look
back at it now that was our final, you know.
Speaker 4 (43:41):
But but no.
Speaker 6 (43:43):
I mean it's a day that I'll always I mean,
there's been some good days with meal Wall and that
one he's up there with the best of them.
Speaker 5 (43:50):
And it was brilliant, brilliant.
Speaker 9 (43:54):
Pat your thoughts on the day as a well, My
faults was much the same as everyone. I mean, it
was like probably beg in the top three games since
I've been going. But my abiding memory of that day,
and it's a very personal memory. After we won, they
put on a reggae version of let Them Come, and
it was on constant and I got on my seat
(44:15):
because I was so excited, not about actually getting to
the f A Cup Final, but knowing we was in Europe,
and I jumped and jumped so hard.
Speaker 10 (44:23):
That I wet myself on that seat.
Speaker 9 (44:25):
I'm sorry, but that is my abiding memory of that game.
Speaker 4 (44:33):
I was just like staying, can't read.
Speaker 10 (44:40):
I was just like ilated. I just couldn't believe it that.
Speaker 9 (44:44):
Of course, then you had to start thinking, am I
going to get a ticket to go to Europe? But yeah,
that was my abiding memory. We're in Europe. One's never done.
Speaker 4 (44:55):
I would have thought maybe it was the thing where
is the nearest toilet?
Speaker 10 (44:58):
I didn't care about that. Weren't going to leave that ground?
Speaker 4 (45:03):
And did you stay quite late into the ground after
the whistle?
Speaker 9 (45:07):
Of course? Yeah, I mean everyone did, didn't we? I
mean a fantastic.
Speaker 4 (45:14):
Day, yes, it was indeed, and traded your day. I
did you.
Speaker 11 (45:18):
I'm not sure how I followed that. I was just
fearing myself, wonder what the coach ride, But listened people
of our agent. The f A Cup was to be
all and endle with it. And so it was a dream,
a dream of mine, a dream of the dear old dad,
who you know, unfortunate wasn't around to see it. But
that's what it was. It wasn't at the game, but
you see it from home.
Speaker 7 (45:39):
But it's so.
Speaker 11 (45:41):
I know what Meat says about the top three games,
but I think for an actual result, that is my
greatest result for me will ever to see that we
actually got to the Cup.
Speaker 7 (45:51):
FA Cup final.
Speaker 11 (45:53):
I didn't quite go as far as we meself, And
his funny thing is I must have been looking at
another clock to stand because that second half, I swear
blind the clock I was looking at it never moved,
and I thought that the referees running it by that clock,
we're going to be going on to your doom study
before this match ins. But it was such a relief
at the end that we'd actually done it. I'll go
(46:17):
nearly as close as power. I didn't wet myself, but
I did wet.
Speaker 7 (46:21):
Me eyes eye.
Speaker 11 (46:23):
I had a searing the eye at the end of
jumping around with a few friends of mine that you'd
have thought we'd have just you know, Christmas had come
early and we got everything we wanted because it's been
such a long time in the coming and for such
a little club like and to achieve that on that day,
as I say, that was the greatest result ever I'll
(46:45):
be Going to the Old Wembley was fantastic, even though
it was.
Speaker 7 (46:48):
A pony company.
Speaker 11 (46:50):
We seeing Millwall at the Old Wembley and you know,
and that was a height because it's the old Wembley.
You wanted to see him here now to think we're
actually going in to the FA Cup Final, No it
can't be meal and against Man United of all people.
But it turned out that was their Cup final. Getting
there was what it was all about. It wasn't about
(47:11):
anything else. And next time we achieved that, I'm going
to make sure that packed those with a lou rolls.
Speaker 9 (47:20):
Did you put that game above the whole game when
we went to the Premiership then.
Speaker 11 (47:28):
You always I always separated the two of the cups
one thing and it was always a dream for the
FA Cups. Was such a big day when.
Speaker 8 (47:34):
I was a kid.
Speaker 7 (47:36):
The league is your bread and but week in week out.
But I know you mean it's there.
Speaker 11 (47:40):
It's level, you know, samal win, the top divisions and
other thing that you dreamed of and you never ever
thought we would get there. So yeah, I was quite
But I can tell you the quick store of you want, George,
about the worst I've been at any game was actually
at Walsall when we got to the whatever it.
Speaker 4 (47:57):
Was, Oh yes, yeah, that's right.
Speaker 11 (47:59):
Because I think wind screen a windscreen, O's it? Because
I just wanted to see Milwark, the old Wembley. I
loved that stadium was a dream of mine. Of course,
we was running out of time, you know, I just
think it would come inside. That got knocked down the
following the season on it. I don't know there's anything
to do with us anyway. At the end of that
game at Walsall, when we was through, I can nincally say.
Speaker 7 (48:22):
I had a blackout and I don't know where I was.
Speaker 11 (48:24):
And then the next minute I realized I'm in the
circle jumping up and down with Stuart never got and
Bobby Bowery and I've never got on the pitch before
or anything like that, but there I was on the
center circle carrying Stuart never got around. And it's just
we all have our own sort of things that we
want to achieve, want to see Millwall do, which is
(48:46):
more or less all the same. But the FA Cup
just meant everything to me, and going to Wembley, the
old Wembley was just as big to me. So them
two sort of games where we got there. Going there
in the playoffs is wonderful, is it. There's such pressure
with the playoffs because you want to get to that
next season in another division. I think they're the most
stressful games you ever watch, Like you know is the
(49:09):
playoff ones. But I was talking to David there three
Wembley trips on the spin and that my daughters and
I think himself, I'm waiting fifty odd years of.
Speaker 7 (49:17):
Get anywhere near Wembley.
Speaker 4 (49:18):
You've got three times.
Speaker 6 (49:19):
Can I just say to that, because when we I
mean one of the things I would have had The
Cup final wasn't at Wembley, admittedly, but the times would be.
And when I went to Wembley the first time in
that final, you're talking about the one guy I thought
about was my uncle, right, my dad's eldest brother, because
he was a Mere Wolf supporter from a boy and
(49:39):
he never got to see Meal Wall player at Wembley,
and the because happened till then it was nineteen forty
five and he was in the army, so he might
have been a bruce, so he may not have even
seen that game. Right, And we get down and I
fought in that day and sitting because it's ironical because
we've been here a few occasions and my grandson or
two of them have been there. They've been Wembley more
time to see mere Wall. Yeah, and then he never
(50:03):
got there and I always thought of that and yeah,
and that's.
Speaker 8 (50:09):
A wind scream.
Speaker 11 (50:10):
When I was fortunate enough to go with my dear
old dad and my father in law who was like
my best mate and my best mate who passed away sadly,
and he went dressed as a lot and with the kids.
It was unbelievable and it was a yeah, it was
a rubbish cup, but nobody could take that day away.
(50:31):
And that's what always be when you get these pundits
on as if the likes of your men unites and
your men cities and always came to every cup final.
I always remember the Cup final Millennium. At the end
of the game, it was only mill Will fans in there.
Man United won the trophy, but we weren't going anywhere,
and I thought that it must be so sad to
be a fan that winds feeds a year in, year out.
Speaker 8 (50:55):
You know what I mean.
Speaker 5 (50:56):
But I wish they wish they could have it now,
didn't I Anyway, Well.
Speaker 11 (51:00):
Yeah, but it's, you know, then days what being a
fan is all about.
Speaker 4 (51:05):
I remember leaving the Millennium and we had lost, and
as she said, there was nobody at the Man United
in and as we came out, I could see this
long vision of all the people and they were all
singing and cheering, and we had lost. Leaving the stadium
and I thought, what a crazy club this is, like exactly, yeah, party, Yeah,
(51:27):
we thought we'd share that with you. That was our
own personal faults of a special day.
Speaker 11 (51:33):
She's sitting next to me. By the way, people are
listening to you. Don't get too excited.
Speaker 10 (51:39):
And even.
Speaker 6 (51:41):
Especially the new Wembley, right, the greatest goal ever ever,
and it's never been beaten, was scored there and we
all know what that goal was.
Speaker 5 (51:51):
No one has come anywhere near. But we ended up losing,
but that goal.
Speaker 4 (51:57):
You can tell all the mari of time listeners who
don't know a lot about me, well you could tell
them who scored that.
Speaker 6 (52:02):
Gary Alexander. I mean it's the greatest goal ever at Wembley.
Speaker 4 (52:06):
And if you haven't seen everybody look it up. It's
quite some and we are biased. But lastly, we're going
to look at the forthcoming fixtures until they are to
our next monthly show and we're going to start with
Sheffield United on Tuesday night. So Pat, I'm going to
start with you because you actually are going to go
(52:28):
to Sheffield Sheffield.
Speaker 9 (52:31):
I'm not expecting a good result obviously, because the top
of the division at the moment. I'm actually only going
because we've got the American arm of the Millwall supporters
Club over at the moment and we're going up with
some Americans to see the game I have won them.
It could be a big score on their part, but
(52:53):
yeah no, so we're going up to watch that. We
don't expect to get a result up there because they're
a good side, although I think they're a bit scared
of Jake Cooper.
Speaker 10 (53:02):
He tends to score against them quite regularly.
Speaker 9 (53:06):
Yeah no, I can't say a lot too much about it,
but for my American boys, I'll see.
Speaker 10 (53:12):
You next Tuesday.
Speaker 4 (53:14):
And what do you think the score would be?
Speaker 10 (53:16):
I think I think one one. No way would I
say predict that.
Speaker 4 (53:21):
We will all lose, even when you think they might do.
Speaker 10 (53:24):
Even when it's in my head, it's not in my heart.
Speaker 4 (53:27):
And stay, what are you your faults on Tuesday night's game?
And I think they're second.
Speaker 6 (53:33):
I think, yeah, I know, I think we're going to
surprise people there because I think they slipped up the
dating they sat, which you know, I'm not sure they
lost one.
Speaker 5 (53:42):
Yeah, so I.
Speaker 6 (53:43):
Think we're getting I think we're going to get at
least a draw there, at least the draw, right, but
we've got to be full at it. I mean, is no,
you can't go up there and just go through the
motions and you know, but now I think that's what
we get a draw?
Speaker 4 (54:00):
Okay, So then you want to add.
Speaker 11 (54:02):
I think there's two things stands pointing one out Sheffield United.
I don't think it's really ill just lose them losing
the day because obviously it's put a bit of pressure
back on them, but then the pressure plays into our
ends a bit. Like Leeds struggled to day at Looton.
You know, these three sides and Leeds, Cheffill United and Burning.
There is a massive prize at the end of it
(54:22):
for them and they're all getting a bit jittery. And
we tend to do not too bad at Sheffield United,
so I'm quietly confident that we could upset them if
I'm honest, and I think you know, if we do,
it might just back up our playoff hopes. We could
find ourselves coming to against Middlesbrough next week and we're
only three points out of the which Middlesborough one of
(54:46):
them side, so it's still all to play for tougher
So because Sheffield United have got a good squad. They've
got that Bretherton is it. I'm nearly swored in. I
know I'm live on radio, but us real Wall fans
do have to bite ox hung every now. But that
Bret who played for Blackburn and done us the other
year and he always seems to have a good game
(55:06):
against us. They've got Keith for Moore who has been
on the bench recently. Sheffield United a good side, good squad.
They're going to have to rally round their sealves out
of the day. But you know, I'm quietly confident we
can go up there and give them a give them
a game, definitely.
Speaker 4 (55:20):
And little school prediction.
Speaker 11 (55:23):
I actually think we're going to nicke it. I have
one new I'll go to one. I think we're going
to knick it to.
Speaker 4 (55:30):
There's a lot of people about, right, and.
Speaker 7 (55:34):
Then the hospital world checks and.
Speaker 4 (55:38):
Then we go on the next Saturday and we're home
months again after today, we're at home to Middlesbrough and stand,
I'm going to start with you there.
Speaker 6 (55:47):
That will be a hard game because and the reason
I say that is because, in my opinion, they have
got one of the top top managers in that division, right,
no question about that whatever, right, And you know they
done well last season but faded, right, and then they
started off this season. Everybody thought they were going to
(56:08):
be at the top and they were struggling them whatever.
But the chairman in their chairman, in all fairness teams
that one of these lunatic chairmen ran sacking people every
five minutes.
Speaker 5 (56:20):
He stuck by the manager.
Speaker 6 (56:21):
And it's now paying offer, right, and they are if
we get I mean, I think I think we can beat.
Speaker 5 (56:28):
Them on the day.
Speaker 6 (56:30):
You know, I mean it's not they ain't just got
to turn up. But it's going to be a hard game,
absolutely no doubt about that, and just say they got
one of the best managers in a division in my view.
Speaker 4 (56:41):
Then we go on to Blackburn.
Speaker 9 (56:44):
They lost on trot haven't They don't know they're gone today?
Speaker 10 (56:47):
They lost a game.
Speaker 4 (56:49):
Yes, they're a bad run the.
Speaker 7 (56:55):
New managers.
Speaker 9 (56:56):
Yeah, if you just want a prediction, I know it's
a way, but I think we and them last time
we went up there. I'm sure I was there. I
think we're winning that tue.
Speaker 4 (57:06):
So, and then we go on to Norwich on this
must be bank colored in Bundy, musn't it.
Speaker 10 (57:10):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (57:11):
Yeah.
Speaker 11 (57:11):
A quick shout out for the Middlesborough game and best
of luck to my mate's grandson Jude, who's the.
Speaker 7 (57:18):
Mascot right on d So.
Speaker 11 (57:20):
I've told him if we're struggling, he's got to go
on and score.
Speaker 7 (57:24):
See what was there?
Speaker 11 (57:24):
But Norwich again, funny side, they lost to day Norwig,
which surprised me. They lost to one at Plymouth because
they needed points and they're sort of trying to get there.
But like any game Georgia home, we you know we're
beating anyone at home, especially sides that a game, well,
we tend to turn up in them games, so I'm
quietly confident with win there.
Speaker 4 (57:43):
Yeah then we got a lost. We got our last
home game against Swansea followed by our last home game
against Burnley and.
Speaker 11 (57:51):
Other way around George Swansea at home, Burnie away.
Speaker 4 (57:54):
Yeah, that's it that way round. I did say, a
last home and by then maybe when we play Burnley
they may well be champions, mightn't they. So I just
want to say to everybody if you want to watch
the Lions. Tickets are available for the Millwall website or
in person from the Den ticket office. Check the website
(58:16):
