Speaker 1 (00:00):
Is Maritime Radio.
Speaker 2 (00:02):
Maritime Radio.
Speaker 3 (00:04):
I'm Bethanie and you are listening to the monthly mill
Fan News and Views show, broadcasting live on Maritime Radio
on ninety six point five FM and on the Maritime website.
Speaker 4 (00:15):
Welcome to our monthly Millwall News and Views show at
Maritime Radio. I'm Miles Thornton, your host from Bermondsey, and
I'm thrilled to introduce our fantastic panel, the dynamic duo
from Bexley, Ted Robinson and Stan Godwin, along with our
ever enthusiastic former Millwall chairman Jeff Burnage from Ted lofso
Land of Richmond. These individuals are not just longtime Millwar fans.
(00:35):
They bring a wealth of experience in football broadcasting spanning regional,
national and intercontinental media, as well as some fantastic podcasts.
As always, we'll dive into everything Millwall. Plus we're excited
to chat with a man who reports from the BBC
and provides match day commentary home and away from Milwall TV.
To kick things off, let's take a look at what
teams have upgraded to the Championship and share our thoughts.
Speaker 5 (00:58):
Ted.
Speaker 4 (00:59):
I'll start with you Chilton Athletic to figure later and
Orion by a single goal at Wembley to be promoted
to the championship.
Speaker 5 (01:04):
What did you make of it?
Speaker 6 (01:05):
Six points next year for us? Thank you very much,
Cholin for coming up. No, I watched the game, funny
enough with a very good friend of mine who's a
childen season ticket older. We was away for that weegain,
and to be honest, I mean I am pleased for them.
I do like playing Charlton and I enjoy it every
time we do. But if they don't invest in that side,
(01:28):
they're going to struggle next year. I mean Orion actually
on the day even he can were probably the better side.
But you know it's whether they've got the finances or
whether they've got a very good manager. By the way,
and Nathan Jones, he's built out side on not giving
anything away. They don't concede a lot. They look pretty
good defensive wise, but we all know the championships are different.
(01:50):
Keller fish to the League one in the sense of
throwing a Peter clean sheet. So I think at the
Freedom have come up, they may well struggle the most Chilton,
but I wish all the best, except for when they play.
Speaker 2 (02:01):
Us, obviously, Jeff.
Speaker 5 (02:03):
In terms of Charlton.
Speaker 1 (02:04):
I'm worried about Charlton Jones as obviously on Nathan Jones,
he's been gone too long to quote an honor rather,
but yeah, I just think that it suits Millwall for
Charlton to be a division below us because there's a
lot of competition for fans in South London and young players.
So but I thought over the season they did deserve it.
(02:28):
But I'm not that confident we'll get six points because
I believe in motivation and it's what's in the head
and they will be absolutely desperate to get a point
against us.
Speaker 4 (02:40):
I mean Nathan Jones turned us down to go to
when well, I don't know whether we actually offered him contract,
but it was rumored, wasn't it, And he obviously want
to beat us.
Speaker 1 (02:49):
Then I think it was he missed out on Alex
Neil rather than he turned us down. But I am
but look, they're up. That's the way it is, and
it is a stronger championship all round next season and
teams that come up from the League One recently have
(03:09):
done reasonably well. But they've come up with some money
to spend. Let's wait and see what happens there.
Speaker 5 (03:16):
Stun so one coming up.
Speaker 2 (03:18):
Well, yeah, I mean on the day, on the day
of the game, they were the better team. I mean,
there's no question about that. And they put a good
run together in the in the you know, in the
march to the playoffs. But the only thing to disappoint
me that day I thought it would have been a lot.
It wasn't as odd a game as I thought it
was going to be because I thought Orient would put
(03:40):
up a better show than they did, and I thought
Orient was poor, and because they were that poor, it
made children look But I mean, as I say, to
be fair, they fully deserve to win the game. Uh yeah,
I mean I should look forward to going down to
the childwin next season. I mean, I'm just hoping. I'm
just hoping that if they beat us right there to
see it. And the reason I say that is for
(04:03):
the very simple reason. The last time I witnessed a
Chilton defeat in Millwall, which in January nineteen sixty eight,
and at that point Robert Kennedy was still alive, met
that and gone to the moon and Johnson was President
of the United States. But anyway, but that's that's the
that's the reason. But no, I mean, you know, we
have to remember.
Speaker 1 (04:23):
As well, Miles, that a lot of people listening to
this program could well be Charlton fans.
Speaker 5 (04:29):
So let's not very true.
Speaker 1 (04:31):
Let's not be too They will be after us. Believe you.
Speaker 6 (04:36):
Me is Jeff by the way, all chelt and so yeah,
I can't wait to see you and have a drink
on you again.
Speaker 4 (04:44):
Well I'm really looking forward to it because you know,
Charlton versus Millwall, Clive Richards and a mass fallen in
the press box.
Speaker 7 (04:51):
Wow, what could go wrong?
Speaker 5 (04:52):
What could go wrong? Wrex them coming up?
Speaker 4 (04:54):
Stan will start with you mate, The Hollywood stars have
returned to championship.
Speaker 2 (04:59):
Yeah yeah, I mean see, there's going to be a
lot made of all this in the close season and they
about all these two body will blokes come and whatever
and they've done and you know, they've done what they've
done at Wrexham and good luck to them, right. But
you know, I think to some degree when they get
up Nick this season coming and because they're coming up
to a different quality and some of that gloss might
(05:20):
start taking an amory, you know, because if they're going
to bring in new players, I mean okay, one could say,
well they've got the money, which is true they have,
but then they're going to be finding they're going to
be spending a lot more money on players and they
possibly anticipated. So we'll have to wait and see. But
you know, it's because of their background and all the
rest of it. That's why they're going to get all
the build up and whatever, and if the season and
(05:43):
if they if they don't even make the playoffs, right,
and you know, most people would consider that to be
a failure. Bizarre thought in my opinion, because but yeah,
I'll wait and see, but I don't get too carried. However,
all that were.
Speaker 4 (05:59):
Talking that money, Jeff Tom Keney could be going to
wreck them for a good few grand a week.
Speaker 5 (06:06):
What do you think? How do you think they're going
to spend.
Speaker 1 (06:08):
In whatever they spend miles, there's going to be a
target on their back because they are very high profile.
Expectations are very high, probably unreasonably high. I mean, they've
come up from the National League, haven't they in the
last three years and there has been a growing gap
I think in the standard of the championship and standard
(06:29):
of League One. So my gut feeling is that they
will not find it as easy as all that mainly
because everyone will be regarding them as a big scalp.
Speaker 7 (06:43):
I agree with Jeff.
Speaker 6 (06:44):
I think this might be a little step too far
from in the sense of their momentum, where they've come
from and where they're going to. It's a big step
from League One to the Championship. Yes, they're probably in
a better position in Shelton because they really have money
to spend. But by the way, Fulham have offered p
and E an extension on his contract down at Fulham.
Whether he stays or not, I don't know, but I
(07:04):
read that the other day. But the intention is already
there from Wrexham. You see what they're going to do,
and if they buy that sort of quality player and
bring them in, then they're going to be a side
to sort of you've got to deal with.
Speaker 7 (07:16):
But I agree with Jeff.
Speaker 6 (07:18):
I think they'll have a target on their back all
this Hollywood Rasmetazle and all that as it gets further
up the ladder, if you know what I mean, you
do become.
Speaker 7 (07:27):
A target more.
Speaker 6 (07:28):
And I'm pretty sure a lot of sides in the
Championships we'll see Rexham is a pretty big game and
in which case they'll be ready for him. You know,
I think it's nobody will be caught by surprise with
Wrexham with their momentum and whatever. And you know, in
some ways a lot of the focus from League One
about teams coming up was on Wrexham this year and
(07:49):
not on the next side that we're going to talk
about Bermingham, who actually really run away with it. So
I think I agree with Jeff. I think they may
will be targeted and you know it might be a
struggle for him.
Speaker 4 (08:00):
So we're all in agreement that Childing and rex the
next year me will get two points against me.
Speaker 2 (08:03):
Yeah, I'm not.
Speaker 7 (08:04):
I think we think we need a promotion already.
Speaker 1 (08:07):
I'm not.
Speaker 4 (08:07):
I've got my fingers crossed Birmingham coming up, then Jeff
will start with you. They lost all only three games
all season and they got one hundred and eleven points
in League One last year, another team that said to
have a bit of money on with them.
Speaker 7 (08:21):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (08:21):
Do you think they'll avoid the drop and do better?
Speaker 1 (08:24):
I do think they'll avoided the drop. A very good
friend of mine is a Birmingham Cissy fan. We've known
each other since we were students, and I always go
up there with him and vice versa except last season.
I think the truth of the matter is they probably
shouldn't have gone down a year ago. They were just
beginning to revive a little bit, weren't they, And the
(08:47):
new people had come in and were finding their feet,
and they went down on the last day if I remember,
I think it was Jeff a combination of results, wasn't
it on the last day. So I thought they were
hot favorites to come straight back up. And if you
think Rexham have got money behind them, nothing compared to
what Birmingham have got behind them. And I think in
ten years time, when they've got this development going to
(09:11):
the east of Birmingham which the government have said they're
going to put some money into the infrastructure to regenerate
the whole of East Birmingham that's going to be a
Manchester city, actually had situation. You know, they're talking about
a sixty thousand seat stadium. The people that should be
worried are probably Aston Villa fans because they've had Birmingham
to themselves for years. But you want to know about
(09:32):
this coming season. I think Birmingham will be okay and
I think there will be comfortably top half. But again
the championship is a tough, tough division and it goes
on and on, and I think there'll be a threat.
Speaker 5 (09:48):
Yeah, a threat is what Jeff says. Stan. Do you
think they'll be for it?
Speaker 2 (09:53):
Well, I don't know, right because everything would point to
that's the case, right, Okay, they're going to be a
wash with money and all the rest of it. But
I mean, you know the stats for last season, well
that was fine. Next last season ain't going to have
this season? You know they're not. They're not going to
lose only three games. I mean, they just ain't going
(10:14):
to happen, right, Uh, But clearly they're going to They're
going to try. I mean, they're get no doubt strength
enjuring in the close season. I mean for all like
that they might be going on now, but but no,
I mean I should be interested, see because I think
what they might it might be in their longer term
interest just to see whether they can settle in there
(10:34):
and rather than go for busts. Because I think if
they go for bust and it all goes wrong, then
I think that they're beyond their way on the slide
and they won't beout to stop him. Yeah, right, Like
when I hear people start talking about that all these
clubs have got all this money. Well that's fine, right,
but they don't guarantee nothing because they've got to spend
it in the right way on the right players and
(10:55):
do things properly. Just the idea that these people, as
you sawd they're going to his flash cash and all
of a sudden it stu we turned from a relegation
team up to winning titles. Don't work like that. With
very good points them.
Speaker 1 (11:05):
But what I would say is that Childen have got
a very experienced manager at this level. Wrexham we've got
an experience manager at this level. I can't even tell
you the name of it, but Chris. It's Chris that
I could really I don't he go him, but he
has not got any experience of being a managers. That
might be where he's not managed, has he, But that
(11:28):
might be a factor. I still fancy them better than
I fancy Wrexham or Charlton.
Speaker 6 (11:33):
Again with Jeff to a certain extent, they've already flashed
the cash and they bought Stansfield from Fulham last year,
who was certainly a Championship player, if not premier player.
From talking to Fulham with tom Key. He going to Wrexham,
but they brought him last year and without a doubt,
he is a championship player and he scored the goals
last year and you can't ignore him stats. Just lose
(11:54):
him three games, it's going to be a lot more difficult.
Speaker 7 (11:57):
I said.
Speaker 6 (11:57):
They've done it in a sort of way that I
think people accepted. They've gone up at Christmas, so nobody
really spoke about them. They are a sleeping giant for
one of a better word which is used quite often
in football. But I think Birmingham City are and like
Jeff said, they went down probably at a good time
from as the people were coming in taking over, because
(12:17):
it let them rebuild. They've started rebuilding in the Championship
in League One. Now they're moving to Championship, they will
build again. But they've already got a lot of players
within that team. But I think championship quality already, which
is a bit of a struggle when you look at
Chelton and when you even look at Wrexham, because the
ones at Wrexham have got to coming to the end
of their career, you know, like the mcleans of this world,
(12:40):
the Fletcher who's been let go that then players that
got them out of lead one sort of at the
end of their career, whereas with Birmingham, Jay Stansfield's at
the start of his career and he could quite well
be one of the top target meant a top goal
scorers in the Championship next year. I think he's that good.
But they've got the money and like Jeff said, there's
(13:00):
lots going on there at Birmingham that to me just
said they're going to get bigger and better. May not
be next year, it may be, you know, but I'm
pretty confident they'll be mid table at least.
Speaker 4 (13:10):
So you're all in agreement that, you know, the top
three teams could all avoid the job.
Speaker 6 (13:16):
I'll have to wait and see. With Chelton And I
don't mean that horribly. That child's not pleasure my family
and all that listening. But I honestly think that they
at the free sides, they are the ones that may
struggle a bit unless they invest really will coming back
to the standspoint. That is a club that's got to do
that because they haven't got the money. They've got to
pick well, find a bit of quality on the cheap,
(13:39):
should we say, compared to what Bermingham can go and
get Chalton. They're not going to be able to afford
to Tom Kenney or anybody like that. But what he
will do, Nathan Jones, is try and make them as
difficult to beat. But the trouble with that is sometimes
them sides just lose one they all week in week out,
and I think that's where Chilton might be struggling.
Speaker 5 (13:54):
Yeah, yeah, definitely.
Speaker 4 (13:57):
So predictions then, do you think mill will beat them
all next year?
Speaker 6 (14:02):
Certainly Childing. I can't say anything else, certainly Childing. And
if they don't be and it'll be standing for there, right, Okay, go.
Speaker 5 (14:11):
To you in the standards. What do you reckon?
Speaker 2 (14:14):
Well, well, I'll say this. I think that we've got
a good chance. I'm not I'm not saying we're going
to pick up maximum points from all of them, but
I mean we're more than cable of picking up at
least nine points and that's the free zone. Yeah, I
mean we've got nothing to fear. Uh, As I say,
you go out there, didn't you? I don't.
Speaker 5 (14:36):
Yeah, you know, I don't.
Speaker 2 (14:37):
Worry about who the opposition. It's what we do that counts,
not with them, because if you let them dictate then
you're going to be troubling't y. Yeah, so what you've
got to do is you will get out the instan
you're author it on the game and shows running the game. Yeah,
and we continue to run the game.
Speaker 4 (14:52):
We've got to go to Ky Bellet now and he's
going to giveusn update.
Speaker 5 (14:55):
On the progression of the Milkman's trust.
Speaker 8 (14:57):
There was just one match from all and this is
in the month of May, a seven zel threshing against
Ashford unsaid at the Den, which saw a record breaking
crowd in SC sixteen since the reform of the mill
Lions is a great day round and good season for
the Lionises.
Speaker 5 (15:13):
Okay, then, so.
Speaker 4 (15:15):
Just while we're waiting for Kyle cole Bates to join US, Stan,
what did you what did you make of You know,
you just mentioned to me there while I was talking
about the game that we saw as milby ash Ford
seven nil?
Speaker 5 (15:28):
I believe Yeah, what did you what did you make
of that one?
Speaker 2 (15:31):
I thought it was quite a good game actually, I
mean it was the first time I've actually seen the
Millwall Lionesses in a light I mean or like the
opposition weren't great, but uh but no, I fairally enjoyed
the game. I thought it was okay, and I mean,
hopefully more people will get along next season to see him.
I mean, I don't, where do you get these people
(15:52):
that knock women's football. I don't. I just don't get
that at all. Right, Oh, I finally enjoyed the game. Lastly,
never been busy. Don't you signed a couple of players? Yeah, already,
so that's good. Yeah, that's good, Jeffrey quickly.
Speaker 1 (16:06):
Yeah, I was pleased they had a game at the Den.
They've been having one a season in recent times. But
we used to play a lot of the games at
the Den. There was one year when it was when
we were still in the championship when we played every
home game except I think they had one or two
at Beckenham when the ground wasn't available. But the club
are beginning to see the point in getting behind the
(16:28):
Millwall line s'es again, which personally I'm pleased about. Everyone
knows about my long association with the Lion s's and
my determination that Milwell should be somewhere at the top
of the women's game. We certainly aren't at the moment,
but under Ted Jones and Jack Whiston, they are determined
(16:52):
to have a go up to their division this coming season.
I wish it.
Speaker 5 (16:56):
Well, okay, we'll be back just after these.
Speaker 2 (17:02):

Speaker 4 (19:48):
Okay, very quickly, just while we're waiting for Carl Base
to join us, Stan, what your predictions for next year?
With Alex Neil signing a new contract, do you think
Millwall will progress and actually get them playoffs as we've
pushed in the last eight years.
Speaker 2 (20:01):
Well, I was certainly hope. So I mean, I'm glad,
I'm glad to we'd and its signed a new contract.
But I think it will. I think to a large extent,
it would depend on who we bring in this season,
you know, or who we keep jeffet Tangle, Well, yeah,
and equally who were keeping. But you know, I mean
I'm opening, For example, we're saying we're signed Sturge the
(20:23):
key from Chelsea, although he's been released. I'm hoping that
we would bring co burning if we can and one
or two hours. So I think that the the the
ingoing and the incomings you know, are going to be
the key to it. I mean, there probably will be
some that will leave other than the ones that have
already been released.
Speaker 4 (20:44):
So far, but we're left to wait and see there
is Yeah, yeah, definitely a little bit about that that
release clause.
Speaker 5 (20:51):
Then from jeffet teen ganger, Jeff, what did.
Speaker 4 (20:53):
You you make of the news that Richard poly broke
that there was a one point in a million release clause.
Speaker 5 (20:58):
I think he wouldn't have signed up otherwise.
Speaker 1 (21:00):
I think it was a feat to get him to
sign for last season, and undoubtedly he will have been
advised to get a release cause in there what level
it's at, I don't know. I'm not sure that Richard's
information will be one hundred percent correct. As we're speaking,
He's still our player, and I very much hope he
(21:21):
remains our player. One thing's for sure is that if
he stays for another year, he will then be a
free transfer, His contract will be up and his position
will be even stronger. But we have to wait and
see there. Regarding next season, Miles, an awful lot will
depend on how we do in the loan market and
(21:43):
what happens every summer is that right at the end
of August you make a couple of signings on loan
like we did last year. Coburn was late in the day, Ivanovitch,
although it was permanent, was right at the death, wasn't it,
Carter a minute from the end of the transfer though,
I think something like that, So I think it's too
early to tell yet. Recruitment in the hands of Steve
(22:06):
Gallen has gone very well since he's joined the club
just over a year ago. Can't be anything other than
delighting with what's gone on there, and I'm very much
hoping for the best. But a word of caution after
we talked about the other three clubs coming up, this
is a strong division to the championship. If you look
at the clubs that are in the bottom half last season,
(22:28):
you know we were the twenty second highest average crowd
our twenty four. So if we can keep finishing in
the top half, we're doing very very well. I think
we will though.
Speaker 6 (22:39):
Yeah, yeah, Ted, Yeah, I've been I'm excited about next
year that one of the reasons being there was one
or two orny younger boys that we signed that we
haven't seen yet. In Sech Lovelace, I don't know what
he's going to be this year. You know Benicia Baker
who we got as well, you know, a couple of
young players. And really exciting me is Netley. You know,
(23:02):
we see sort of next to nothing of him really,
but I'll see enough of him to say to myself
we've got a player there with any shadow of doubt. Yeah,
just right, I undred percent right. Champ, which was always tough,
it's going to it's getting tougher, There's no doubt about that.
But I think in Alex Neil, that was probably going
to be the best signing we've done in the summer.
To get Alex on the bigger contract. I think that
(23:26):
bodes well for the future. The thing with Millwall Football
Club is we are on a very stable footing with
everybody from the chairman that and everybody's pulling in the
same direction. And I have to agree with Jeff about
Steve Gannon and these purchases so far as head of
recruitment have been nothing short of exceptional really, But I
think the fact is, and I know Jeff wanting to
(23:47):
mention this later, is that some of the players that
we've released, the experienced men like Hutchinson and Wallace and
by the way, fantastic servants at the football club without
any shadow of that. And I wish them all the
best wherever they're gone, because forever, in my minds is
really good Millwall players. But we need maybe to assign
one or two established championship players. We got plenty of
(24:09):
youngsters that hopefully will come on. One I'm really excited about,
and I have been for a while with a Mecca.
I think he could come on leaps and bounds hopefully.
But I think one or two more established championship players
within our squad would do us really well, and I'll
fully expect with that. If that happens, we'll be a
(24:31):
top half team again.
Speaker 5 (24:32):
Yeah, yeah, definitely right, We're going to go to Karbates. Now,
who's ready awaiting for us? Carl can hear us?
Speaker 11 (24:40):
No?
Speaker 5 (24:40):
Okay, can't hear us?
Speaker 4 (24:41):
A few technical difficulties with carbates here. Jeff, you believe
you want to say something there is Yeah, I think
Ted's right.
Speaker 1 (24:48):
It would have been remiss to have this program without
mentioning Murray Wallace and Sean Hutchinson. Both of them have
done brilliantly as small Wall players and both of whom
figured in some very very memorable moments. Who will ever
forget Sean Hutchinson's last ditch winner at Bristol rovers to
get us into the playoffs we might not even be
(25:08):
in this division. Love for that, and Murray Wallace is
winning goal from a great distance of two yards.
Speaker 7 (25:14):
In the effect Andy's christ terms. We expected.
Speaker 1 (25:19):
The other player that's gone, of course, Aaron Connolly. He
was always possibly going to be short term, but he's
moved on and some of their under twenty one players
have gone. The standard of player we've released out of
the under twenty ones, those players three or four years
ago would have been good enough to get another contracts
at Millwall, So that just proves the standard of player
(25:43):
that we're now getting in our system. And some one
or two very good players got released out of that,
but we've got a lot of players still and there'll
be some movements out as well as in I think
this summer. And as I said earlier, I think the
loan What do you think standard all right about the
loan market.
Speaker 2 (26:02):
Well, yeah, that's always an important thing. But just one
thing I want to rags right, which I think is
crucial and I know it happens to every club. All
I'm opening is this season, we do not reccur with
injury problems like we had last season, because that was
an absolute nightmare winning. I mean we were getting too
every game and they were just going to be out
(26:23):
for the odd game. It was like three or four weeks, right, Yeah.
So all I'm saying is I'm just open on that.
On that side, you know, we get we get along
relatively unscathed on the injuries.
Speaker 6 (26:38):
Just to coming back on stands point about cob And,
I mean, if we don't get cob and we certainly
need a cob And type player, I think that proved it.
Ivanovich come on leaps and bounds in my opinion, having
Coburn alongside him, because Covin took the physicality side of
it away from him. Unfortunately, he was one that we
did lose for quite a while and it noticed, but
(26:58):
there's a lot of my players in at mial Wall squad.
At the moment the McAuley lang staff I felt sorry for.
He just seemed to need a goal and it just
never came for him last year. He could be anything
again next year. As the players, I say that we
bought that we didn't see Femi disease came on leaps
and bounds throughout the season in my opinion, from his
(27:19):
first few starts to a player that was becoming a
constant threat for us whenever he played. And I say,
I think if we can back that up with one
or two quality championship players, let's call him that should
we say? Players that are established in the championship now?
And I'm sure there's targets and we are like no
(27:40):
everybody else in the division and any other division. Everybody's
looking to see what you do in the summer, who
you're going to bring in, how that will change the team?
Will arm for one and saying to myself, will Alex
Neil continue to play with a four four two or
will he go with three at the back, or you know,
there's all them sort of things that I'm sure they're
working out at the moment. But transfer activity is going
(28:01):
to be very interesting at Millwall and hopefully we get
the right buys and that we could will be knocking
on the door if we do.
Speaker 7 (28:08):
I've genuinely believe that.
Speaker 1 (28:09):
Yeah, yeah, Jeff, Yeah, I think both Stan and Tedor
hit it right on the lail, right on the head,
because I think under Alex Neil he will want to
be pressing, be a real pressing team. And the lights
of Josh Coburn willing to run and run and run.
I mean he didn't always get the ninety, did he,
(28:30):
because he'd be worn out towards the end. Mehilo isn't
so much of a pressing player, but what a goal scorer.
His percentage of goals to chances very very high and
all different types of all different But you wouldn't have
said he was always pressing, you know, whereas Josh was,
and that was a loan signing and we'll need to
(28:52):
match that standard of loan signing, I think. But you've
made a good point about Cameron Negley, both Neglie and
as Ease. The fans of Sparta, Whattterdam and reading. We're
both gutted to lose those players. Yeah, but guss it.
So they are two amazing signings. Yeah, and I think
(29:13):
stands right about injuries. If those two can get through
a season, we're going to cause some problems and I
do think will be okay even though it's a very
strong division.
Speaker 5 (29:22):
Carl Bates should be ready and wait for us. Carl,
can you hear us, Nate?
Speaker 1 (29:27):
No?
Speaker 6 (29:28):
God right, Well, I'll tell you what, myles. What we
haven't spoken about. We've spoke about the sides coming up.
We haven't spoken about the freedom are coming.
Speaker 5 (29:35):
Down Nosich, Southampton and Leicester.
Speaker 6 (29:37):
I cannot see Ipswich being anything other than in the
top two next season.
Speaker 7 (29:43):
In my opinion.
Speaker 6 (29:44):
They went up out of our division when they did
the season before, and they would best see team my
team down there for quite some time. They may will
lose by I know they've lost the lap, but they've
got that George Hurst and things, so you know, I
can't see them being anything.
Speaker 5 (29:59):
But yeah, yeah, brilliant. I believe we've got Carl Bates.
Speaker 4 (30:04):
Now.
Speaker 5 (30:04):
Carl can hear us?
Speaker 7 (30:07):
He's gone all I can see him somewhere, but we
can't hear you.
Speaker 5 (30:12):
I can't hear him.
Speaker 2 (30:15):
He can't hear us.
Speaker 7 (30:16):
No, he's talking.
Speaker 1 (30:17):
Since that's the most sense you have talked.
Speaker 4 (30:24):
Jeff, what did you think about about it switched down
and what said there?
Speaker 15 (30:27):
Then?
Speaker 1 (30:28):
I'm very mindful about Luton. You know, no one would
have predicted they go straight back down.
Speaker 7 (30:33):
I think different, Kep.
Speaker 1 (30:36):
I'm worried. I think the Championship's very strong. I think
they are beginning to get some quite wealthy people behind
the various clubs in that division. I don't think any
of those three will find it easy, but over forty
six games it will tell of the three of them statistically,
(30:57):
I switched with the team that finished highest of the three.
I think, so you'd think they weren't. They're in with
the best charge.
Speaker 6 (31:03):
I just think, Jeff, sorry, but I just think with
Ipswich rather than a lot and they may will be
a Fulham from when Fulham come down and went back up.
That's the feeling I'll get with them, because say they
finished the best out of them free they got caught
out by the quality of the Premier League, but they
was quality in the Championship and.
Speaker 1 (31:20):
Also ted Southampton. The change manager change manager Ipswich are
going with the same clear and number, so that I
think will help them. What do you think that well, I.
Speaker 2 (31:35):
Mean, on paper, I would I would tend to agree
with Ted in relationship to Ipswich because they when they
was there last time in this division, they were outstanding
and whatever. But you know, I don't know. I mean
the other two I don't think. I don't think they're
going to be in too great a problem. Leicester and Southampton.
(31:57):
I don't think they're going to reach the its they
certainly did when they was when they went up.
Speaker 6 (32:01):
Before about the Leicster situations then, because I've heard that
they are going to get fined not finding adopted points.
They're evidently being pulled up for the fair play thing
again and I've heard they may be losing as many
as twenty points. Yeah, if they deducted that, they've got
to be on promotion form just stave off relegation.
Speaker 2 (32:23):
Yeah, I mean I didn't know about the points deduction
said I must submit.
Speaker 7 (32:26):
But but they're under freck with you.
Speaker 2 (32:29):
But I mean if that, I mean, if that's I
mean they want that like they want to exactly. Yeah,
but no, you know, I just see, I mean, on
on paper, I would you would say, well, Lipswich would
do like what what said say, right, and I understand that.
But I and the manager is a good Manager's no
question about that, right, But I don't know. I think
(32:51):
I think it's going to take them time to just
again because they're.
Speaker 6 (32:54):
Talking the manager of what you read about this, Jeff.
I think the Southampton situation, they've just got a new
manager and that will steal another bit of a gamble.
Don't know much about him not being in there, but
I hope for Suthampton, Sagan Sathampton's fans say they give
him a chance because they seem to be having at
(33:15):
the beginning. It's a bit of Watford have a manager
and he don't happen for them what they want, you know.
So I think it's vital for him. But this will
still actually well, the only thing I'd say on that
will steal.
Speaker 2 (33:24):
I mean if you look at his record when he
was coaching in Europe, I mean they, I mean they
all rave about him, right, So I mean again, you see,
he's just sort of just put it this way. If
all of a sudden he turned up at me a
wall one day, right and because whatever a lot of
people would be in for a right education, because he
will not do what he is always.
Speaker 6 (33:46):
He may be like because became that, but there's a
gamble there. Yeah, that's right what Jeff said about the
tides coming up the managers. Two of them got experience,
one of them isn't in the challenges, so you know,
I mean you're talking about a guy it's all like
doing well abroad. Yeah, that's right, but you're coming back
into what is probably the fifth toughest league in the
(34:10):
whole of Europe.
Speaker 2 (34:10):
In the Championship only the only thing I would add today,
and I don't disagree with you, Tad. I mean if
you look, if you look at the Championship now in
terms of managers, coaches, whatever you want to call them, right,
it's going away. The Premier League is very few. There's
going to be very few English coaches there.
Speaker 15 (34:27):
Now.
Speaker 1 (34:27):
I saw a fantastic stat stand Alex Neil, who joined
us on the thirty first November of December, is the
twelfth or thirteenth longest serving manager in the Championship. It
shows stability I think counts and talking about those three teams,
it's which looks like a stable club more or less.
(34:48):
But we don't know. Everyone's equal on no points at
the moment.
Speaker 6 (34:51):
But what I was saying at the beginning, at the
beginning of the movie's talking about Millwall, we've got from
the top to the bottom of our football club. The
thing that gets not can about enough really from my
line is the stability that is there right with the
chairman and whatever.
Speaker 7 (35:05):
Shelton.
Speaker 6 (35:05):
The other thing I didn't mention about Shelton. They still
have the douchial aid business hanging in the background. They
don't own their own ground. He could decide anything which
could disrupt things Leicester, the homeless era causing a bit
of problems.
Speaker 5 (35:20):
I've always said to you.
Speaker 4 (35:22):
So we've got we've got carbates on the line here, Oh, Carl,
can hear us?
Speaker 7 (35:26):
And I can hear you. We've got which make an entry? Yes,
thanks for coming, Carle. We're off here now. I'm not surprised.
Speaker 5 (35:35):
I'm not surprised.
Speaker 17 (35:36):
I've got sixty I've got sixty eight phones, computers. I'm
hanging out of the window.
Speaker 5 (35:41):
It's the works, okay.
Speaker 4 (35:44):
So next up is that man that wrecked the breast
box at Norwich and remains on their risk register. A
freelance journalist who reports for the BBC Sky and amongst others,
and entertains our fans with his dialect, tones and analysis
all season long, and as a a commentator that I
want to be. I look up to the man that
is Carl Basel. I'm truly welcome, truly delighted to welcome
(36:07):
you as our special guest this evening. Thank you for
joining us beyond reckon Norwich's press box. What is your
most memorable moment of your time as matchday commentator at.
Speaker 17 (36:14):
Mirwell, well, it definitely wasn't the last five minutes trying
to get online. I know that I had a minor
breakdown and potty mouth was used. I'm not going to lie.
Speaker 7 (36:24):
And now we heard that.
Speaker 17 (36:25):
We heard that.
Speaker 2 (36:28):
I'm sure you probably did. But actually it's a surprising one.
Speaker 17 (36:32):
When I've spoken to people, when I mentioned brammel lay
and the Jay Cooper goal, people naturally think of the
late goal that he scored from about twenty five yards out,
but which seems to be what people most remember my
commentary for was that one, but it was actually from
twocenty nineteen when he scored in the one to one
draw up there at ninety fifth minute header. I mean
(36:54):
it was it was a priceless goal for Millwall at
the time we were heading the wrong way. Results weren't
going for Trus and you always see that one side
that drops like a cannon towards the bottom of the table,
and I thought that was.
Speaker 7 (37:07):
Going to be us.
Speaker 17 (37:09):
And the game had everything. I mean, we went one
kneel down fairly early. We really went for its second half.
The big difference was Tom Elliott. Tom Elliott came on
as a sub second half and he just caused them
no end of problems. That was his looping header that
John Egan cleared off the line with his hands, so
he got sent off. Then Marshall hit the top of
the bar with the penalty anything and this is never
(37:29):
going to go our way. Once again, it was Tom
Elliott with the header. Keeper saves it and there's Coops
at full stretch to dive head of the ball into
the net. And that term the season and that was
I think it is even my first or second season
with Millwall, and I just remember remember us watching that game.
They put us in the gantry for that game. Normally
(37:50):
we sit in the general press box forever. Reason we
were up in the gantry and there was myself, Billy
Taylor and Sam She was commentating with us as well.
And it was just carnage. I mean there was I
accidentally knocked Sam's headphones clean across the room. I was
just yeah, it was a brilliant moment and really really
important as well. So I say that's the one that
vividly sticks in my mind.
Speaker 1 (38:09):
Yeah, definitely.
Speaker 6 (38:10):
Okayle stay here, mate, lot. I don't think Moles looks
up to you, because I think he's actually tall. The
new thinging about it, but anyway, most people don't. Most
people considering it. We had such a good finish in
twenty four to twenty five Coal, what would you say
were we were good at during that time and what
were our weaknesses in next season? At the end of
(38:30):
the season run what do you think.
Speaker 17 (38:34):
I'd say, I'd like to I'd rather start with the weaknesses.
I think better to finish on a positive. I think
injuries didn't help us. Losing Lucas towards the end of
the season was a problem in goal. And that's no
slight on Evans whatsoever. I think he did well considering
the situation he was put in. Coming in so late
and in such an important part of the season. We
(38:55):
lost Danny Mack and Lenny Who and we thought that
would have been a problem. I'll come onto it replacement
in a while, so I think that was it. But
our away form at the start of the season cost
us overall. I mean we won one in twelve and
that was the stoppage time goal from Casper over at Swansea,
and I think that cost us because towards the end
of the season our away form actually picked up really well.
(39:17):
You know, we won a loot and Derby wat for
Sheffeld United. We were good on the road towards the
end of season. I think that's a real positive to
take into next season. Was the fact that away from
home we look capable of scoring it and we weren't
aside to under Neil. And this again nothing against Neil
at all, will we be quite often we'd sit back
and try and pinch a goal. Under Alex, we seem
(39:39):
to be a side that wants to score, wants to
impose ourselves on the opposition, wants to cause them problems
more than thinking we're going to just come as a
team that's going to you know, look at a key
set piece or just maybe a moment of magic. And
I think that has definitely been a positive recruitment. I mean,
look at Tristan Kramer, who I was sort of alluding
to when I spoke about Danny and Lenny.
Speaker 7 (40:00):
I mean, who saw that coming?
Speaker 17 (40:01):
A cent a half all day long, forced to play
fallback due to Danny and Lennie, and he just it
was like it was effortless. There was only probably a
couple of times when he was up against truly top
top draw wingers like Burnley last game the season, where
yes he did look like a center half at fallback,
but nine times out of ten he was fantastic. And
(40:22):
what a signing that is. Tang Ganga and Casper so
consistent through the season. You know you need a good
spine to your side, and they were just what we
were looking for. I mean, Casper's getting better and better
players that are going semi disease.
Speaker 7 (40:37):
It's really impressed me.
Speaker 17 (40:38):
I thought the Millwall shirt might have been a bit
too big for him when he first started, but he's
grown into that and I'd say he's one of the
first names on the team. Sheets Anger Williams another exciting talent,
of course, and the small matter of that Serbian up top.
I mean, what a season he has had and what
an array of goals as well. This isn't like a
true poacher's got. You know, you look at the goal
(41:00):
at Luton edge of the box, that wonderful finish of
Portsmouth after a really nice team move down the right,
plus the little smashing because the little sort of darting
finishes like at Burnley. I mean, naturally, players and naturally
clubs are sniffing by the sounds of things.
Speaker 7 (41:15):
You hear rumors.
Speaker 17 (41:16):
There's always rumors this time of year. How much truth
is in them normally minimal, but you never know. But yeah,
if he's back, if he's with the club next year,
and I expect him to be in all honesty, we've
got a great player on our hands up top, and yeah,
I'm really looking forward to seeing him again.
Speaker 2 (41:32):
Cole sa mate. Given what we have been told, or
given what you have told us, where do you think
the reinforcements are necessary and or our tactics may need
to vary?
Speaker 17 (41:47):
Good questions, Dan, I would say central defense is an
easy choice because of Hutch and mother departing and what
servants they've been to the club to top top professionals
and really nice skies as well, So they're a big loss. Yes,
Tristan comes in so you've got him, Coops and Jeff
as your Maine three. But I think for those sort
(42:08):
of positions, you're going to need a force.
Speaker 7 (42:10):
A left back.
Speaker 17 (42:11):
Because we've got Joe Bryan there will be very good
picked up a couple of injuries. We haven't got Muzza
who can just slot in. There is a left back
to cover a few games. We've had a couple of
people come in there and impressed, but are they going
to be able to go ten to fifteen games if
they're with the club. And one thing that I am
central midfield wise for me, or that I suppose the
(42:33):
way Alex plays it, that number ten role, nobody's really
bolted that down yet said that's my spot, and no
one's shifting me from it. We've had a few people
dabble in there, but nobody it is. And I suppose
it's something that I do mention in commentary quite a
lot about Ryan Leonard. He is obviously a wonderful fallback,
but he did come to us as a central midfielder,
(42:55):
and he is the one player we have inside that
I'd be confident if he picked up the ball on
the halfway line and there was a gap, he would
run forty yards very quickly, a strong drive and he
can hit a ball.
Speaker 2 (43:07):
If you remember that goal he scored.
Speaker 17 (43:08):
At Hull during COVID when he was about three miles
away and hit it sort of top left hand corner
of the top left of the keeper. It was an
incredible goal and it's a shame that somebody that good
has been put back to fallback when he could have
done that going forward. So I think somebody like that,
somebody who can get the ball and drive at the opposition,
(43:30):
because then that opens up the gaps for a mehigh
low just ahead of them, so he can be played
in like it was when Bangouru Williams cut in against Portsmouth.
You just cut in and then there was the ball
through because Race has just got that bit further forwards.
He'd gone past the midfield and then the gaps opened
up because of that run. So I'd say that somewhere
because we've got some great holding midfield as Honeyman. I
(43:53):
think's very underrated and i think it's very unfair sometimes
the sticky gets when he is a central midfielder and
he plays there about twice a season. I'd like to
see Saville or Billy Mitchell or somebody trying to play
right for three left of a free just in behind
a striker. So those three Billy sav I don't even
no problem with them, but they're not the type of
player of just alluded to. There's nothing against them, but
(44:15):
that to me, that number ten role, If that's the
way Alex is going to line up, somebody needs to
grab that shirt and say that's mine for the season.
This is why so yeah, that to me is the
pivot pootal one.
Speaker 4 (44:27):
Yeah, Cole on that note, unfortunate due to the technical difficulties,
we can't go any further and Jeff isn't able to
ask his question, but we do want to say thank
you very much your efforts for getting on to talk
to us tonight, and.
Speaker 17 (44:39):
No apologies, impress Yeah, take care of yourself, guys, sorry
about that, No worries, take care, Go ahead over and
we'll be back with our second guest very soon.

Speaker 4 (45:50):
I'm Ars Thornton and with me the magnificent panel of
Ted robertson stand Godwin and Jeff Burnage. You have heard
a bit about our Meal Community Trust and some other
things that they do make a fantastic difference to the
communities that they serve. And talking of the communities, here
is the new Mayor of Suwok and South Bermondsey Councilor
Sunny Lamb and Mill Community Trust CEO, Shawn Day talking
(46:11):
with Amon Barkley about recent Southern and Mill community matters.
Speaker 18 (46:15):
On the seventeenth of May, Mill Community Trust CEO Shawn
Daily and Andy Dolan of Mill Romans were invited to
Southern Cathedral. Seawn Dailey on behalf of the Mill Community
Trust and Andy Dolan On behalf of the Mill Romans,
who were separately awarded the Southok Stands Together Award. Following
(46:37):
the Wards, South Bermondsey Councilor, Sonny Lamb was appointed as
the new worship for the Mayor of Suwark. Sunny joins me. Now,
Sonny must have been delighted to receive this honor.
Speaker 12 (46:51):
Yes, be honest too. It is a very sorreal experience
when you permitted the country from Africa, and yeah, you
don't think of coming councilor to plays of becoming the mayor,
standing there and being inaugrated as the first citizens of
a great historic poor borough of suburb towards the most
(47:16):
important moment of my life. And I just want to
say a big thank you to good people of servilem
and who made that happen because without me being the COUNCILO,
that wouldn't have been possible.
Speaker 18 (47:28):
Nice, brilliant Can you tell us how you came Subermancy,
what has kept you there?
Speaker 12 (47:35):
As a had some very interesting history which obviously make
everyone careful what you say and what you do. However,
over the decades, I would say, bless you Russu Riding
who passed away recently. The fishmoner and the glue work
(47:56):
out together. I mean, thats I knew in lot of people,
and the Emancia Garry may goold. Bless him and so
many people who are working together in the committee to
bring our committees together. And then I wasn't surprising when
I was asked to stand by my Gabor party in
twenty thirteen, I was selected to stand, and then twenty
(48:20):
fourteen I was elected. When I was knocking on those
I realized that a lot of people from very diverse
backgrounds had known for a long time, even decades. So
when the summoned this is what are you doing here,
I'm hasy to vote for me? Said, well, I remember
somebody said they boy, you are your own party. Well
(48:40):
you know at least you know me. You know I'm
hard working boy. I'm a man of my world and
I work for everyone irrespective of position. If you have
three votes, were not giving one of the three to
your friend? Okay, I'll think about it. Here you go,
how are you city? Result, and I then represent the
good people of Serviency since twenty fourteen because this is
(49:03):
my totter. Came one of the governors at Alice Girls. Yes,
and then I was governor at Sava College, who I
became a councilor. So I've have done very fantire relationship
with EM and C and Salvimoncy had the opportunity to
represent them. I believe it was just a natural progression.
Just want to say again thank you for the Goovi
(49:26):
Wo Salvemancy for Tavia background who made their opponent.
Speaker 18 (49:31):
A man of the people. We're seeing you at the time.
You have a relationship with the mill Or Community Trust.
What do you say is to benefit the mile Community
Trust and the football club provide to the community the.
Speaker 12 (49:46):
Link between Silver Council through a publical appointment with the
Millwork Community Trust.
Speaker 5 (49:53):
Pause.
Speaker 12 (49:53):
You know, had had some of my colleagues who had
the link before, but in the last year or two
I became the link and I'm glad that I was
able to watch you a few of Millwar matching I
remember I think the first one was actually it wasn't Assansick,
your director and a few Sonny, we want to see
(50:15):
her at every match. If you're going to bring love
to us, I said, well, I always making sunny everywhere
I go. So I've been disappointing myself if I didn't
do that, you know. So it's fantastic, you know. I
mean there's some wonderful people Sham and May I have
mentioned for a few years now, and so many other
(50:36):
people in mill War of course, So working together and
making sure that we bring our committees together and we
make you know, Male War the fantastic club that it is,
even make it even better than what it is for
an accessible to the committee. I think this is something
I cherish and I want to continue to work with
(50:58):
the trustees.
Speaker 18 (51:00):
Great stuff and they're bringing the sunshine to SE sixteen
is bringing sunny Lamb as well, by let's say nd
of it absolutely Sally. It was a relief to us.
The regeneration of Seth Bermondsey allowed us to remain where
we are and that Lewisian Council granted us an incredibly
(51:22):
long lease that was not on the cards initially. Did
you foresee that outcome arising? And will you be involved
in future developments?
Speaker 12 (51:32):
I mean, to be honest with you, I'm more surprised
because yes, you can see where New War is like
the border between and Lucia, you know, collaboration, partnership between
several Canzu and Lucia and Canzu and the council of
who represent you know. So I'm more surprised that it
(51:54):
happened a few years ago when the new Pisa was
being opened on the Sorry Canardo was actually invited to
come representing it because I was still able to support
but got the relationship between for a long term an
new issue. Continue to maintain and sustain that because it's
very important for our diverse communities that love New World
(52:16):
and also want miwork to remain where it is. So
I'm not surprised that both in the boroughs our cancel
and lettered apsentatives and the community to work together the measure.
Speaker 10 (52:26):
Of mi Wor.
Speaker 12 (52:28):
Again it's long termly that it deserves.
Speaker 18 (52:33):
That's fantastic. We look forward to hearing your views about
how things develop in and around the Bermans the area.
Speaker 12 (52:42):
I would be very happy to continue to support in
every way I can because we want mew War to
continue to develop our community, sure that young people have
something to look forward to claim for New Wor Academy
and also doing that things in future. So yes, I
(53:02):
definitely whichever we are can support how we continue to
do it with my colleagues as well.
Speaker 18 (53:08):
Great South Sonny, enjoy the next twelve months as the
worship for the Mayor of Southark and I'm sure we'll
speak again for sir, and.
Speaker 12 (53:19):
I look forward to see you too. I remember it's
always Sonny around me.
Speaker 18 (53:24):
And we hope that will always be the case.
Speaker 19 (53:27):
Thank you so much.
Speaker 18 (53:29):
I've got Sean daily with me. Now. What a day
Sun Saturday, the seventeenth of May was for our Millwell
Community Trust, our Millwill Romans and Southern Councils. Politically appointed
Millwell Liaison Representative both Andy Dolan Love the Romans and
usual picked up separate prestigious southerk Stands Together awards and
(53:52):
Sally Lamb what is your liaison representative was inaugurated as
Mayor of Southern Is also South perman Ze Councilor. Congratulations.
Speaker 2 (54:04):
How was it for you?
Speaker 19 (54:06):
Thank you very much, thanks for knowledging the award.
Speaker 20 (54:09):
When I got there, I was quite shocked because I
didn't know anything about Andy being up for an award
as well.
Speaker 19 (54:15):
MCT won the award about three or four years ago.
Speaker 20 (54:19):
Really about the impact and organization as on Suffolk, how
it brings the community together and then the impact it does.
So for me it was a great day, but I
was more pleased about Andy getting it and you got
the award for the work the Romans do within the
local community, how they break down the barriers and how
(54:39):
the OLGB community is now seen within Subfolk. So great
honor for the Trust and all my staff all the
hard work they put south. But I was really pleased
with the Romans and Andy getting this sort of award.
Speaker 18 (54:52):
It's also honor the council's representative to Millwell is the
mayor of Submark. For the season ahead, tell us about
his relations with the club.
Speaker 20 (55:01):
Sonny's been like a counselor for the local area, probably
one of the first counselors I met one I took
up the role CEO, very supportive of the work the
Trust does. Out of all the counselors, I would be saying,
he's the first if I have an issue or I
send something through to the Council for them to look at,
say like the annual report or the work we're doing
(55:22):
some pools.
Speaker 19 (55:23):
Et cetera.
Speaker 20 (55:24):
He would be the first one to come back knowledge
the work we do. You come and visit ours counselor.
He's a Millwill fan, and then to be in rollas
mayor is unbelievable for us. I mean I've already spoken
to him and said, you know, it's our forty years.
I would like for the club and the Trust to
get the freedom of the borough next year, which I
(55:44):
think would be a great honor. Only the mayor can
actually acknowledge that to an organization. You know, I've already
invited him to the new season. I'd like to stand
at the den of meeting people coming to our program.
So for us club and organization, he will support everything
that's going on in the area.
Speaker 18 (56:00):
He's such an enthusiastic character. Well shall we speak next time.
Speaker 19 (56:05):
Take care, Thanks again, naming for the knowledgement. It's brilliant.
Speaker 2 (56:08):
Thank you, You're welcome.
Speaker 4 (56:10):
A great interview there by Amon Barkley with Sunny Lamb

three minutes more from Surrey Key station. Sorry arguably Surrey
