This is Maritime Radio Maritime Radio.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
I'm Bethany and you are listening to the monthly mill
Fan News and Views show, broadcasting live on Maritime Radio
on ninety six point five FM and on the Maritime website.
Speaker 3 (00:18):
Welcome to our Millwall monthly News and View show at
Maritime Radio. I'm your host, Marles Thornton from Bermondsey, and
I'm excited to introduce our wonderful panel, the lively duo
from Bexley and Swanley, Pat Maslin and George Lampe, along
with the always enthusiastic former mill Will board member and
chairman Jeff Burnage from ted Lassoland of Richmond. These incredible
individuals are more than just lifelong Millwall fans. They also
(00:41):
have a wonderful background in football broadcasting, including regional and
national radio, along with some fantastic podcasts. As always, we'll
explore everything related to Millwall, Plus we're looking forward to
chatting with a former Lion whose skills took the lines
to the top flight for the first time and the
only time in their history. Today's last match, played at
(01:02):
the Den against Portuguese Premier League team gd Estual Prairier,
brought in a three year winter for the Lions with
the Hilo avanavi It scoring once and.
Speaker 1 (01:09):
Josh Coban scoring twice.
Speaker 3 (01:11):
That is friendly's minutes, tactics and formations being tested.
Speaker 1 (01:15):
The real action begins next Saturday.
Speaker 3 (01:17):
To start with the review last Monday's fans forum which
was held at the Den. Jeff was there, Jeff, can
you take us through the outcomes for consideration?
Speaker 4 (01:24):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (01:24):
Well, it was an impressive evening on Monday, and what
was particularly good I think was that the club produced
full minutes of the whole two and a bit hours
that went on. So on MILLWELLFC dot co dot uk,
the club website, they've printed absolutely exhaustive minutes about everything
that was said. I think the first half was Mark Fairbrother,
(01:47):
who's the managing director of the club, Alex Neil probably
the most important person, head coach, and Steve Gallen and
Alex and Steve took most of the questions in the
first half. After the short break we had more commercial
staff Luke Wilson, commercial Director, Alex Russell the supporter liaison
(02:08):
officer and Max mcleaden directory communications. There were so many
things asked that I think it's easier for people to
go and look on the minutes that were produced. But
the interesting things that Alex Neil and Steve Gallan had
to say included Steve gallen strategy on signing players. One
(02:30):
person asked why we'd signed so many and Steve said
that some of them were signed with development in mind,
and he named Benefitio Baker, he named Zach Lovelace. He
named Aj Matthews as people that he didn't expect to
go straight into the first team, whereas he cited Luke
(02:50):
Hundle and Josh Coburn and people like that who he
thought would go straight into the side. Also the guy
that we brought in that played up front from Sunderland,
whose name Aaron Connolly. Aaron Connolly, he said that he
was signed to go straight in the side. That was
quite interesting. He didn't give anything away about what the
(03:11):
side would be today, but I was looking forward to
the team selection today Theasteral game because if it was
a league game, that would presumably be the team that
would take the field.
Speaker 1 (03:21):
And yeah, it's pretty much full strength, wasn't it.
Speaker 5 (03:24):
Interesting thing was which goalkeeper because Alex Neil wouldn't be
drawn on Monday night. He said that all three goalkeepers,
including George Evans, would be considered for that spot. Today
it was the guy from Fulham, Ben Darr, who started
the midfield. It was interesting. He seems to really like
(03:47):
Billy Mitchell, which is very pleasing for me personally. He
started in midfield with Casper and Billy was only going
to play half a game, I think because he's not
played very much, and Negli he played half a game
as well. There are a multitude of subs in the
(04:08):
second half, three mil at halftime, Coba and two Mihailovich one.
Speaker 6 (04:14):
Speaking about some of the players there, did he mention Nesbit?
I mean, we've got to take him back. Obviously, he
hasn't had a very good history at the club up
till now. So did they talk about in ner of
his past and is he like pulling his weight now?
Speaker 5 (04:32):
He said about Lesbit, He didn't say much. He was
quite guarded about Nesbit. He just said that he's in training,
he's with us. He'll be considered, but he's not quite
fit at the moment and it may have been a
political answer. He didn't figure at all at Sutton or
(04:53):
in the under twenty ones last night at Welling or today.
He's not the only one that didn't figure but he
clearly isn't. At the moment, we're in the dark. I
think that will all become clear as the month goes on.
Speaker 7 (05:06):
I also like the fact that you've just mentioned that
we are signing youth players that are there to progress
through the system before they actually play to our first team,
and that's something that we haven't done for many a
long day, so I think that's a good sign.
Speaker 8 (05:25):
As far as the football club's concerned.
Speaker 9 (05:27):
I agree.
Speaker 5 (05:28):
What he did say about that was he liked players
coming through to play in our under twenty ones with
us first. He didn't want the players to be away
for a year and not think of themselves as Millwall players.
I think he was talking last year about Grants who's
been away for a season and a half. He must
(05:49):
have thought himself as a Bromley player. So he said
that he would like the under best under eighties like
Alfie Massey, came through last year a whole year with
the under twenty ones in our building and then they'd
be ready to go and play in men's football. So
I think the hint you can get from that is
that Alfie mass is one of the more likely ones
(06:09):
to go out on loan before.
Speaker 8 (06:11):
The end of the month, and I did notice also
in the minutes.
Speaker 7 (06:15):
If I'm right, Jeff, you can tell me that Gallan
is very much involved in the transfer business, isn't he.
He's in on the transfers when they're taking place.
Speaker 9 (06:25):
I think he leads it.
Speaker 5 (06:26):
I mean, I think the whole point about having a
director of football and was that it's such a complex
business now, so much time is consumed. We can't go
back to the model that we used to have where
the manager decided on who to go and watch and
who to sign. It's just far too much time is consumed.
So I think you can take it that Steve is
(06:48):
there to be the buyer and seller of players. He
obviously consult the manager, and Steve Gallan appointed Alex Neil,
so they will be working closely together, and he'd have
an idea of what Alex is looking for, and Alex
Neil will have a chance to ask Sleeve Gallan what
he's up to and who he's looking at.
Speaker 9 (07:09):
That's how I see it.
Speaker 5 (07:10):
Steve Gallan in charge of transfers in and out and loans.
Speaker 6 (07:14):
Any word on venevit are we looking to sell if
the price is right.
Speaker 5 (07:18):
He said that we have no need to sell any player,
and he expects no significant outgoings, but they are planning
in case Tanganga was to leave. He did say that
we've got two plans, one with Jeaffette Tanganga and one
without but he's under zero pressure to let anybody go.
(07:43):
So we're optimistic and he's optimistic that we'll have no outgoings.
Certainly Ivanovitch, she said, there's been no bid from any
Premier League club, despite what you might read.
Speaker 7 (07:55):
And I think we're all a little bit surprised Tan
Tanga's still with us, aren't we Because I think we
all thought come the end of the season he would
be gone fairly quickly.
Speaker 5 (08:05):
He's had no interest in Tanganga from the Premier League,
That's what he said, So I'm a little bit surprised
about that. But look, the best case scenario for mill
All surely is that no one wants him apart from us,
and we'll have him for the season. Good for us, right,
I don't think Ivanovitch is going anywhere this summer.
Speaker 6 (08:28):
Positive stuff, brilliant.
Speaker 5 (08:30):
There's a really good fans forum, everyone agreed, best I've
ever seen, and the minutes are really good.
Speaker 9 (08:36):
Have a look at them everybody. They're very comprehensive.
Speaker 5 (08:39):
They answer any question you might want to have wanted
to have asked if you were.
Speaker 3 (08:42):
There, Yeah, I couldn't be there. And they were very
very thorough for me to read.
Speaker 7 (08:48):
And which we haven't had that before. Miles, I don't
think no, in fairness, I know, I know the Supporters
Club have run it for some time now, but I
thought that was much more thorough than you think I've
seen before.
Speaker 6 (09:01):
They weren't even there was they no, No, they weren't
actually no, And that was that was a little bit strange,
wasn't it.
Speaker 10 (09:07):
It was?
Speaker 5 (09:08):
He did talk about the possible fans Advisory Board, a
shadow board. I don't think the plans have got very
far yet, but he did mention that, and be interesting
to see what transpires there. Who they asked to be
be part of that. Anyway, there, you are excellent.
Speaker 1 (09:28):
So then let's go.
Speaker 3 (09:29):
Obviously, preseason for me has now finished, Jeff, what did
you make of the preseason as a whole from all
the teams we played up until today.
Speaker 5 (09:37):
I'm always interested in preseasons. Some people don't want to
go to a preseason game. I think one of my
fellow panelists. Pat, you're like that.
Speaker 11 (09:45):
Aren't you.
Speaker 6 (09:46):
I don't like friendly. I just don't go.
Speaker 5 (09:48):
One of my daughter's goes one of the other ones.
She won't go to a preseason friendly, so horses for courses.
Speaker 9 (09:55):
I didn't go to Spain.
Speaker 5 (09:57):
I don't know what went on there, but I was
Sutton on Tuesday, which was incredibly impressive. We absolutely blasted
them away.
Speaker 9 (10:06):
That was sex. We scored six there.
Speaker 5 (10:08):
I went to under twenty ones last night at Welling
and it was clear who would not be involved today.
Bangora Williams played most of that game. George Evans I
think played all of that game. Grant the center back,
he played I think the whole of that game. So
I wasn't expecting them to be in the twenty today
(10:28):
and they weren't.
Speaker 10 (10:31):
Pat.
Speaker 1 (10:31):
Is it worth coming to you or not?
Speaker 10 (10:33):
Really?
Speaker 6 (10:34):
I've not even watched them on the TV. I'm not
interested in friendlies. I know they're important and it's a
kick around, etc.
Speaker 12 (10:43):
Etc.
Speaker 6 (10:44):
But it's really not my thing, George.
Speaker 7 (10:48):
Anything's said, not really, Although the one thing I have
noticed is that we seem to be preparing very well
as a football club for these preseasons. You know, I
think there's a lot of lot, much more fault put
into it now. And as Jeff was saying, certain players
would have played last night that weren't playing today, and
I think it just shows that they're playing in has
(11:08):
gone up a gear in our football club.
Speaker 9 (11:11):
Yeah, I think we've had similar preseason.
Speaker 5 (11:14):
I always think that it's surprising we don't play our
league team more than once in the preseason, but we've
been doing that for years. One difference this year was that,
and it's happened a lot throughout football, is that rather
than play forty five minutes then changed all eleven, they're
tending to play the starting eleven for sixty minutes to
(11:36):
get sixty minutes in their legs, and play thirty minutes
for the oncoming subs the following game.
Speaker 9 (11:42):
It's largely reversed.
Speaker 5 (11:43):
So everyone has had a game where they had sixty
minutes in their legs.
Speaker 9 (11:47):
That's an interesting new thing. I think we do have a.
Speaker 6 (11:51):
History though, of poor clubs getting games against I mean,
I know we had Palace this year, but that was
behind closed doors. They've not been attractive games from what
I remember.
Speaker 7 (12:06):
I mean, let's be honest, we haven't had what we
might call an attractive preseason game for quite a few
seasons now have we. I mean we've started to go
to Spain only recently where we've allowed the supporters to
go with, you know, come and watch that. Even that's
a new thing. That's only been the last two seasons,
(12:27):
I believe. So, yeah, there's a little bit where maybe
our reputation goes before us sometimes.
Speaker 5 (12:35):
I think it's not just reputation Jews. I think it's
financial Clubs do not want to spend a lot of
money on a game that's going to be three thousand people,
you know, watching a friendly. So I don't think we're
considered attractive opposition by other Premier League teams for example.
(12:56):
So we tend to get games against non league sides.
I think last year in Spain playing Forest was a great,
great thing.
Speaker 9 (13:05):
AT's a bit at that, but I wasn't. But so
I think you're right.
Speaker 5 (13:08):
Every year we finish up with a game against someone
from Spain, don't we, or Portugal or something like that,
and it seems to have worked there.
Speaker 8 (13:16):
You are, Yeah, we can't. We can't moan about it
too much.
Speaker 3 (13:18):
En No, Yeah, I've got to agree with with you
in saying that you know, planning, like the last couple
of seasons has been a lot better than.
Speaker 1 (13:29):
In recent years. Yeah, I really would think that.
Speaker 3 (13:34):
On the touch of transfers as well, what do you
reckon any anyone else come in?
Speaker 6 (13:43):
But we've not really lost quality players. I mean there's
no key players who have actually left.
Speaker 7 (13:51):
No, I mean Tantanger's up in the year. We never
know what might happen with that. That would happen quickly,
I suppose if it did happen, But generally, I I'm
just impressed without the way Gallon works. Actually, I know
early on when he joined us, there was quite a
few you know, did we like him?
Speaker 8 (14:08):
Did we not?
Speaker 7 (14:09):
And I think you have to look at his signings
and I think he wins hands down. I don't see
anybody can can argue about it. You know, these players
seem to be of a very high quality. We're paying
as a football club prices we've never paid before. But
then that still don't make them be good players. You know,
you can buy tough players, and we don't seem to
(14:32):
be doing that very often.
Speaker 6 (14:33):
Touch would yeah, but hands up, you and I were
both critical of him when he first came in.
Speaker 7 (14:37):
Yeah, that's acts very true, but he may have proved
us wrong lightly.
Speaker 6 (14:42):
Yeah, well hopefully you know this scenes.
Speaker 5 (14:45):
Yeah, really, signs are very promising. Funnily enough, going back
to the fans forum. One I think about that was
when the fans forum started at six o'clock, we haven't
yet signed our fidelty. By the end of it they
told us that he now signed. So that was very
very up to day on Monday night at the fans forum.
Speaker 8 (15:01):
Yeah, I think that's a very good, amazing sma.
Speaker 3 (15:05):
You know the fact he was give it what a
year and a half ago he was being touted for
an England call up and now he's playing.
Speaker 7 (15:11):
For Millwall, right, I never knew that, to be honest.
I think, Yeah, the club generally is really moving in
the right direction. And what I like about it is
actually been talking about Gallum being in charge of or
taking all the all the work when it comes to transfers.
And I was also happy when we went to the
(15:33):
other meeting where Marshall before he left to call all
the goalkeeping business. You know, he picked our goalkeeper he
trained in, he went looking for what goalkeepers you want.
I think that's a really good way for any football
club to work and I'm glad we work.
Speaker 3 (15:49):
I think that's continuing under Deep Thoughton as well with
the signing of Stephen Bender because he's worked with him
at Swansea, I believe. So I think that is continuing
now under the new Gold approach, that that's.
Speaker 8 (16:00):
A really good progressive step.
Speaker 9 (16:03):
I think we watch pat Andy Marshall.
Speaker 5 (16:06):
I think he did a fantastic job and he's just
said publicly that he just badly needed a break. You know,
pick these people that come straight out of playing into coaching.
When did his last time a summer older, He's got
kids and he had the great lot the lots of
his great friends.
Speaker 8 (16:22):
Yes last year, which I think really affected him.
Speaker 9 (16:26):
I think it did. But let's welcome Dean.
Speaker 5 (16:30):
And hopefully he will be just as good as Andy,
who I think was excellent.
Speaker 1 (16:34):
Well, listen, he's got a great last name, hasn't he.
Speaker 12 (16:36):
So you know.
Speaker 9 (16:39):
No one gets that. Marshall better explain it.
Speaker 3 (16:42):
No, so obviously Marles Thornton, Yeah he didn't have to
explain it, but yeah, true to me, I was a
bit slow. Yeah, so so Dean Thornton. He's will stay
on track with him. He's worked at clubs like Southampton
Swansea City, some great experience and goalieper coaching as and
I think a great great addition to the coaching staff.
Speaker 7 (17:03):
Yeah, the proof of pudding is that it's seeing how
is goalkeeper's gone along, isn't it?
Speaker 8 (17:10):
So yeah, let's wait and see on that one.
Speaker 7 (17:12):
I'll always wait and see when it comes to things
like that.
Speaker 5 (17:16):
We're in the Championship and we're probably the forty fourth
or forty fifth best supported club in the country including
the Premier League, so we're definitely doing well to be
there a club in that position. Their recruitment is absolutely
key and Steve made a bloody good start. Let's let's
(17:39):
be fair and it's exciting.
Speaker 8 (17:42):
Yeah, it's very exciting.
Speaker 1 (17:44):
It is very very exciting. Yeah, we're going to go.

Speaker 1 (22:14):
Good Night, Good evening, Brian.
Speaker 3 (22:15):
I'm genuinely delighted to welcome our special guest this evening.
He played for Milwall from nineteen eighty five until the
end of the nineteen ninety two season. He was capped
by England under seventeen's level and games youth caps two.
He played for Milward one hundred and ninety six times
and was voted player of the Year in the season
the Realwall game promotion to the top flight. Now he's
transitioned from making saves to supporting others with a specialist
(22:38):
team for professional football training camps, travel and pre season tournaments,
and also serves as a host on match days at
the Den.
Speaker 1 (22:46):
Jeff, we'll start with you.
Speaker 9 (22:47):
Good evening, Brian, how are you very well?
Speaker 20 (22:50):
Can I just just put him right that I've got
under twenty one caps as well, not just seven, eight
and eighteen. Let's not get that if you're going to
do your research to it properly.
Speaker 10 (23:04):
Great, thank you.
Speaker 5 (23:08):
Miles just mentioned what you're doing these days with organizing
training camps and preseason tournaments and so on.
Speaker 9 (23:14):
Once again, you.
Speaker 5 (23:15):
Organized Millwall's preseason friend is at the Pinotar Arena in Marcia,
Spain in mid July, with our fans traveling to support
the team. Also, how was this experience for the club
this year, for the fans and for you, Brian.
Speaker 20 (23:33):
I set very high expectations for training camps, not only
for Millwall but for every club I look after this
year there was I'm only going to be honest here
is I think Alec. I think that the new management
team expect high standards.
Speaker 1 (23:55):
We seem to have lost Brian. Brian a believing mouches self.
There we go.
Speaker 10 (24:05):
I'm very good at doing things like that. No, no.
Speaker 20 (24:13):
Thanks, Chelsea, So so listen, yeah, I set myself high
standards and and this year all the matches and everything
I was really pleased with. I think the fans are
amazing now they've now they've been let to travel by
the club, and they're showing why they should have traveled
(24:37):
when they weren't allowed to. I mean, I think the
the two years that I've been doing it and have
been going to pin a Tar, I mean there's been
I think nine hundred and maybe one thousand this year
traveled out to see the team play the two games
at Northampton and LG. And I can't praise the fans enough.
They were they were brilliant.
Speaker 3 (25:00):
Brian has gone. I don't think he's muted himself this time.
Could be a connection er. Yeah, we're gonna write so Hello, I.
Speaker 20 (25:15):
Don't know what happened. They're sorry, I'm on my I'm
on my phone. So if I maybe some brant I
don't get paid enough darling to do that, I'm really sorry.
But my phone goes off and I don't know when
it's going off and it cuts out. But anyway, that's
another story. So yeah, I was really really happy with
Eric went. The fans were brilliant and long mat continue.
(25:38):
Obviously there we'll try and get some some different venues
where the fans can come as well. But I think
over the last two years that the club has been
to that area.
Speaker 10 (25:50):
I think it's gone really well.
Speaker 6 (25:54):
Hello Brian, it's Pat.
Speaker 10 (25:56):
Pat. How are you.
Speaker 6 (25:57):
I'm fine, Thank you? You good?
Speaker 10 (25:59):
Yeah, very well, yeah, very well, thank you.
Speaker 6 (26:01):
Thinking forward to the coming season just around the corner.
We haven't lost any key players, as I was saying earlier,
but out of the new ones we've bought, who do
you think are going to help shape the team and
what do you think about the coming season with the
new signings we've made.
Speaker 10 (26:17):
Well, I'm going to start with the number one.
Speaker 20 (26:21):
I think if we was all at the game today
that I think we saw a very competent goalkeeper who
commanded his box when he had to. His distribution was
very good, and I think he is a good capture
from Fulham. So obviously Dino has done his own work and.
Speaker 10 (26:39):
He's brought him in.
Speaker 20 (26:40):
And I think, first of all, I'm going to say
this but that the goalkeeping area, I think in any
football team is very, very very important, and I think
we've got some very good goalkeepers now in abundance at
the club.
Speaker 10 (26:54):
So that's one position I'm very.
Speaker 20 (26:55):
Pleased a And as you rightly said that big Hello, Hello,
we're here right Sorry, Sorry, the internet dim pod coining.
So so yeah, I'm I'm really pleased with the goalkeeping element.
(27:16):
One player i'd love to see stage jeff It. I
know there's there's a lot of rumors about him going
to different clubs, but I know I think this is
maybe you saying that the club mayor have offered him
a new contract. But I think jeff It, uh, you know,
is A is a fantastic player for us and with
a strength in depth, we've got the back now. I
(27:36):
think we we have a really really good back line
and in depth. I mean you've got to think we
you know, Leonard didn't start today, Joe Bryan still injured.
So with them just them two players, you know, the
back line is very very strong on and off the pitch.
With with competition for places, I want to give Billy
Mitchell a special mention. I think from the end of
(27:59):
last season, I think he was when he come back
from his injury, I think he was one of the
reasons why we ended up challenging for you know, the playoffs,
and again I think he's getting better and better and
I think he's going to be an important player for
us this season. And obviously Coburn coming in up front
(28:21):
making him a permanent signing, and we've got the big
serve upfront as well. I just think that at the
moment the squad's looking very very good, and the additions
that have come in recently, I just think the manager
is putting together a squad that, first of all, let's
(28:41):
not forget can stay in the championship and then secondly
challenge for let's be realistic here a playoff place. So
you know, I don't want to put any pressure on
him because I think that's wrong of us to do so.
But I think what the manager's doing and the chairman
is putting together a squad that can compete in this league.
Speaker 6 (29:02):
Agree.
Speaker 7 (29:03):
Yeah, that's good, Bright Georgia mate. Right, there's been some
exciting building work going on in the kitchener standing this season,
hasn't there We've now three levels of hospitality, new hospitality.
So we'd love to hear your views about these changes
and what your role may be in obviously bringing these
(29:26):
to life once the season gets here.
Speaker 20 (29:30):
Well, no one's been allowed to go up and see them.
Speaker 10 (29:34):
The closest.
Speaker 20 (29:35):
The closest we've got to see today is the obviously
the windows the patio. Does that have been put in
the patio? Does that have been put in?
Speaker 10 (29:48):
So?
Speaker 20 (29:50):
And I saw some other little features, but no one's
been up there, so no one's been allowed utlet so
I haven't seen any finishing articles or anything like that,
but I've been hold it's.
Speaker 10 (30:02):
State of the art and it all.
Speaker 20 (30:04):
It'll be unbelievable for the people that they go up
there and have their hospitality the state.
Speaker 6 (30:10):
Of the art prices as well though, aren't they.
Speaker 10 (30:13):
No, they're not.
Speaker 20 (30:14):
Let me just tell you a story that when mill
Football Club are not mill when the ground was newly built,
to buy a box at Millwall Football Club, I believe,
and again you've got to take this as it was
fifteen thousand for the season last year I believe it
was eighteen thousand. So in twenty three years it's gone
(30:37):
up three thousand. No one, no one can can. No
football club can you know, not put their prices up
to match what we're doing. And if if we need
to earn more money to buy better players, then then
things need to go along without it going on with.
I mean, if you go and I know we're not
in the Premier League, but if you go to Manchester United,
(30:57):
they're paying seventy to eighty a year on box. You
know we're asking we're asking a little bit more than
that this year. But I think it's only in line
where where we haven't put the prices up. You know,
over the years that the new ground has been built.
If we're to put it up gradually, then I don't
think there have been a problem. However, I will say
(31:18):
that you know, the fans are going to have something
that they're going to I believe because I haven't seen it,
they're going to really really like. And if we want
to get maybe a few corporates in that can affold
that type, they're going to have fine dining. They're going
to have some really really nice experiences out there. So
you know, even though even though it has gone up
(31:40):
a little bit and I don't know the prices yet, Hello,
Bright's still here.
Speaker 3 (31:49):
We've we've lost Brian once more due to connection issues.
Speaker 6 (31:56):
What he's gone. I can tell you the prices if
you go into the top tier.
Speaker 1 (32:03):
He's back.
Speaker 8 (32:03):
Okay, Sorry, sorry we lost you there, Bruce.
Speaker 20 (32:06):
Sorry, Sorry, Yeah, So I just I just I just
think there's a lot of changes going on, and I
think when people see what's been done in the lounge.
I just think they're going to realize how much effort
has gone into making bringing our club up to where.
Speaker 10 (32:22):
It should be.
Speaker 7 (32:22):
Right, I've got a couple of questions for you here.
One might be a bit awkward, but we worry about
it later. Right, Will you be doing your normal hospitality
stuff in one of them, you know areas?
Speaker 10 (32:37):
Yeah, listen, I hope to. I really enjoy it.
Speaker 20 (32:40):
I really enjoy the support I get from the people
that go up there. They pay me nice compliments. So yeah,
if the club want me to do it, and I'm
sure they do, I'll be only willing to do it
for the club here. I really enjoy it, and it
means as well more importantly that I can bring my
dad to the games.
Speaker 10 (32:59):
I'd come in anyway, but I mean, you know, just
to bring my dad to the games.
Speaker 20 (33:03):
He's eighty two now is his life, so you know,
want to bring him to the games also.
Speaker 7 (33:08):
And everybody loves you doing it, So yeah, that's not
not the Other thing I'm going to ask you is
a little bit more tricky. Now we're we're building these
new hospitality suites. They're costing quite a lot more money,
but we can argue about that another time. But our
mill Wall was a club trying to get, for want
(33:29):
of a better word, a new Clientil.
Speaker 10 (33:33):
No, I don't think so, I don't. I don't think so, George.
Speaker 21 (33:37):
No.
Speaker 20 (33:37):
I think there's there's three different prices going to be
in the hospitality. See as I again, I'm guessing on this.
There's there's three different lounges up there. I think there's
like a like a more pub experience, there's going to
be a fine dining, and then there's going to be
like the loundes that I do. So there's going to
be three different price categories. So one I think is
(34:00):
going to be a lot a lot cheaper than the other. One,
one's going to be a lot dearer, and then you've
got my one once in the middle.
Speaker 10 (34:06):
So that's where it's. No, I don't think. I don't think.
Speaker 20 (34:09):
We're trying to change our clients help because our fans
are our fans. But you know that there's got to
be somewhere if if you know, there's some top corporate
people want to come and have some fine dining on
a Tuesday night when we play I don't know whoever,
you know, and they're going to pay for you.
Speaker 10 (34:27):
Could fit then why not? Why not?
Speaker 8 (34:29):
The only thing that bothers me about that, Brian.
Speaker 7 (34:32):
Is that you know, these people will come to a
winning team, you know, and pay the extra double the
price for the meals now and I'm not saying the meal.
I don't know what the meals are like, but they
will pay double the price. But should the team not
do well, then people will disappear in a flash, and
then the club will look at the odd core supporters
(34:53):
that we are and wonder where we are if they
push us out at all? So am I being might
being ridiculous there?
Speaker 8 (35:00):
I don't know. I'm asking you a question, man.
Speaker 20 (35:02):
I wish to stay in my in my lounge. Do
you expect there to be an increase every year in customer.
Speaker 7 (35:09):
I would expect there to be an increase every year, Yes, absolutely,
every year, every every year. Do you think the product
that you pick up every week will be the same
price or do you think it'll increase? No, I do
expect it to increase, but I expect it to fit.
What is what is there? What is you know? What
(35:32):
we as Millwall supporters? You know expect.
Speaker 1 (35:37):
You know, Brian?
Speaker 6 (35:38):
Can I here, George and I have a box down
there and we were basically told last year by the
Cat and Company they they were corporate, they weren't interested
in us. It was it was a terrible interview by
them when they come around the boxes, and that's suppose
made us a little bit bitter against it all.
Speaker 10 (35:59):
So what a box, He's a box, not corporate?
Speaker 6 (36:02):
Well no, I mean she said are you corporate? Are
you family? And we said family, And to be honest,
we will looked down upon from that point. And I
do understand standing some of the other boxes were actually
asked what they're earnings were.
Speaker 20 (36:18):
I think that's I think I think that's totally wrong
before we start, if anybody asked what they earn, I
think that's totally wrong, and I'll stand by that. But
obviously you've got to understand for us to buy better players,
right and to bring up our margin to our money
more money as a football club so we can invest
in better players. What we're doing at the moment, then
(36:39):
we've got to put prices up and that means that
we can be That means we can put a better
team on the pitch in order to get where hopefully
one day we'll get to.
Speaker 8 (36:51):
And in fairness, line. I mentioned this earlier.
Speaker 7 (36:54):
We are spending more money down than we ever have,
so I would give you that all day long.
Speaker 20 (36:59):
The like. That's because we sold the Plaid's Crystal Palace.
So there's a little bit more money this year than
there've been in other years because we've sold the.
Speaker 10 (37:09):
Player for forty million quid.
Speaker 20 (37:11):
So what the chair You've got to applaud the chairman
now because the chairman is putting not only money into
the new hospitality, but he's also putting the money.
Speaker 10 (37:20):
Onto the pitch.
Speaker 20 (37:22):
If you, if you, if you, if you have a
look at the squad, what we've got at me all now,
I'm going to say it's the strongest squad I've seen
there for maybe ten years with you.
Speaker 7 (37:35):
It's the strongest squad we've had since we went up
with you guys.
Speaker 20 (37:41):
Let's yeah, I mean we yeah, I'm going to let's
not put too much pressure on the boys. You know,
it's a strong squad at the moment. And I'm going
to say, now I'm not whatever. We've got a fantastic manager. Absolutely,
we've got We've got a fantastic manager that knows the
division very well. And if we keep going away, we're
(38:02):
going in the next five years, but we'll have a
season in the Premier League just say. But I believe
that he's a man to take us where we want
to get to. Even if we get into the playoffs.
I think it's a great success for this club the
way things are at the moment and how big some
of the clubs are in this league. But as I
say to you, I'm trying to answer you questions in
(38:24):
the polights way I can. If we need to put
a big, good side on the pitch, then things need
to go up, yeah, not not not not not not drastically.
I'm not saying where it goes up five hundred quid
or whatever, but things need to go up to bring
up the money that the club earns, which means we
can spend more money on players.
Speaker 10 (38:44):
Yeah, and that.
Speaker 20 (38:46):
That Unfortunately, unfortunately, that's the way it is now. It's
not like it was when we played like where you know,
there's certain rules and regulations.
Speaker 10 (38:55):
Have been put in now going back to part.
Speaker 3 (38:59):
Like, I have got to cut in there now. We
are obviously live. But it's great to speak with you,
and thank you very much for coming on. Before you
leave us very quickly, could you give us, the reasons
why Millward has been a big part of your life
for so long, and will you be following in the
footsteps of Millwll goalkeepers Brian King and David Ford with
(39:21):
a long awrated biography.
Speaker 20 (39:23):
All right, I can't write, so I've done about a
lot of biography or whatever, so that might take a
little bit of time. But yeah, Millwall, my family, my
nanon granded that sadly no longer with us.
Speaker 10 (39:36):
My dad or I said, he's eighty two.
Speaker 20 (39:38):
That's all I know. Mill Football Club. I've played for him,
My family has brought me through it. It's the only
club I'll ever support and you know they've been good
to me and I'll support the clubs as long as
they want me to do the training camps, as long
as they want me to do the lounge. You know,
It's just been a massive part of my life. You know,
it's just the joy to be there. And I was
(40:01):
very fortunate, fortunate enough to be in a side that
played in the top flight for a couple of years,
and you know, I owed your club a lot, and
you know, I'll always be grateful.
Speaker 8 (40:12):
That's lovely, lovely, And we were fortunate enough to see
you mate.
Speaker 1 (40:15):
Yes, Brian, Well there you go, Brian.
Speaker 20 (40:18):
There's there's a lot of players that come before us though,
so what you've got to realize is as well, then
players pass path the way for our team to do well.
The team that didn't go up in the seventies I
think it was that missed out and and everybody else
that played for me, they paved the way for for
for us to go up, and we've paid the way
now for these players to come in. It's all a
(40:40):
stepping stone and hopefully one day, as we say, we'd
be back in the Premier League.
Speaker 3 (40:45):
Thank you very much, thank you, thank you, take care,
thank you very much. We're back straight off.

Speaker 3 (43:13):
Thanks very much, Bethany Amles Thornton and I'm thrilled to
be here with our wonderful panel, George Lempe, Pat Maslin
and Jeff Burnage. You've already heard a little bit about
the incredible work of our Millll Communities Trust and the
positive impact that they have on the communities they serve.
Speaker 1 (43:27):
They truly make a meaningful difference.
Speaker 3 (43:29):
Why not go along took to the book launch at
the trust and check out what's going on. Speaking of communities,
first we'll get an update from Jason Vincent on the
mill Lioness's and Romans, both wonderful teams under the umbrella
of the mill Community Trust. Then mill Lionesses manager Ted
Jones chats with Amon Barkley about their exciting plans and
preparations for the upcoming season.
Speaker 21 (43:50):
Millwall Lioness is big dollige Hamlet to Neil. Lioness's next
game is on Sunday, the third of Gorgas away as
he spawn. Both Millwall, Raymonds and Praye FC did not
play any fixtures this week. However, there will be a
tournament with further details to come.
Speaker 11 (44:11):
Thanks for joining us, Ted, who have nine new signings
as of today. Last time me to Lockett on the
Maritime Show spoke very positively about those joined by the
fifth of July. Since then, you've added Tony and Bussy.
Could you tell us more about Tony.
Speaker 24 (44:32):
Yeah, it's been a really big season for us, all
sort of preseason in terms of recruitment. You know, we've
got nine players in a tenth coming very soon and
hopefully I think again another three or four which we're
looking for. So yeah, everyone's settled in really well. Tony's
done really well stepping in. She's come from Sutton. She's
another young player, bags of ability, you know, real big potential.
(44:52):
For the future, I think, which has been a similar
characteristics to a lot of the players which we signed
and brought in. You know, we wanting to bring some
experience plays in me you know, which we still want
to get a few more in, but also a lot
of younger players who we could develop and push on
and hopefully help them push her up that is, and
hopefully push us hart in the league. So yeah, Tony's
done really well. I think she's going to have a
really big season for us. She's technically really good and
(45:12):
the ball the center midfielder, so yeah, planning to come
from her excellent.
Speaker 11 (45:18):
What was expanding the squad of priority this season and
is so what motivated that?
Speaker 24 (45:24):
Yeah, recruitment was a massive part of what we wanted
to do. I think we felt that we definitely needed,
you know, to change up the squad slightly.
Speaker 12 (45:32):
You know, we had a good core group.
Speaker 24 (45:33):
There was a few individuals which we let go and
they moved on, but we definitely felt we needed to
get some fresh blood into the team, fresh ideas, I think,
especially to help us push on and progress. So yeah,
it's definitely been really important. It's going to take a
bit of time for them to settle in and understand
how they wanted to play. But you know, pre season
so far, you know, three games and three good performances
(45:54):
and we can't complain. So yeah, they're really good characters
that were brought in, really good individuals ability wise, so yeah,
we'll hopefully we'll be We feel that we've got much
stronger squad than we did last year. I think we've
got a lot more depth and a lot more competition,
So Jeff and I are quite adamant that we wanted
to have twenty two players for each position. You know,
we've got a lot of underratings who are also competing
(46:16):
with the first team squad. So yeah, we're definitely a
really good position, and I think it just means that
everyone week and week out has to be at their
best and battle hard in training because there's easily another
player can.
Speaker 12 (46:27):
Take their shirt.
Speaker 24 (46:28):
So yeah, we're really happy of how we're recruited, and
hopefully we can sign a few more.
Speaker 11 (46:33):
A great dimension to your tactics there said, there are
new arrangements made last season under the Mile Community Trust
and now entering a full season with Jack and yourself,
how has that experience been so far?
Speaker 12 (46:47):
Yeah, Jack and I are quite happy of how things
are going at the moment.
Speaker 24 (46:49):
You know, when we came in, we spoke sort of
internally about sort of a three year plan and we've
sort of touched on towards the next five years, but
sort of last season and that the main focus was
to consolidate, make sure we stayed in division, you know,
after a poor start, and start to get some ideas across,
you know, which we felt was happy with.
Speaker 12 (47:09):
There's some really good points and really good.
Speaker 24 (47:12):
Moments from last season which we could take, but definitely
feel like there's a lot to improve on. But yeah,
we're definitely going in the right direction. You know, it
hasn't really been a break for us in terms of
the off season. We've done a lot of work with
getting the structure right off the pitch and making sure
therect systems are in place, and you know, all the
(47:32):
off field dealings and work that goes on behind the
scenes is correct, in structures right for us to push on.
So that was a big focus in the off season,
which you know, we feel like we're in a good place.
I think financially it's going to be a positive year
for us, you know, I think hopefully that can help
us push on longer term in the future, so that
has been a big focus for us, and now I
think the focuses onto the pitch, you know, trying to
(47:55):
push on.
Speaker 12 (47:55):
I think, you know, the last two.
Speaker 24 (47:58):
To three years, you know, we've always been in there
group that's just outside the top four. You know, your
likes of Fulham obviously gone up, Dartford, Dorkin Salt Dean
Barkin had a good season last year. We've always just
been outside that group. So I think our main focus
is to try and break into that group. You know,
how can we close the gap towards the top three
or four teams.
Speaker 12 (48:18):
I think this season will be quite open.
Speaker 24 (48:20):
I think a lot of teams, you know, Door Can
have signed a few good players, Barking have also done
the same, and everyone's going to recruit and get stronger.
Speaker 12 (48:28):
But we feel like the season is going to be
quite open.
Speaker 24 (48:30):
So for us, it's about being the best that we
can each week and you know, hopefully we can close
that gap to that top four. And I think the
closer are which we can get towards that top four,
I think gives the group a lot more confidence, us
more confidence, and then you never know what could happen.
But yeah, I think the main focus us is to
try and bridge that gap towards the top, you know,
improve and where we were last season, and again continue
(48:52):
to build for the future.
Speaker 23 (48:54):
Yeah.
Speaker 11 (48:54):
As our Stan always says, you never know until you know.
But the infrastructure is in there and from what we've
heard that really sounds great. Thanks Ted, until the next time.
Speaker 3 (49:07):
Fantastic interview there with Amon Barkley and Ted Jones, the
mill Linuses manager. The Linuses seem to be moving on
up and Ted mentioned a five year plan exciting times. Lastly,
we look at our forthcoming fixtures until our next monthly show.
First up Norwich away, which is of course the first
game of the season.
Speaker 1 (49:24):
Jeff, we'll start with you, guys. You with a win
straight away.
Speaker 9 (49:28):
Ron Paper.
Speaker 5 (49:28):
It's a tough start the first few games really, but
it's the right time to play Norwich. New manager, some
new players, new style of play. Yeah, I think it's
the right time to play them, but a win would
be hard to come by. I was one of the
few people alive now that can remember us winning at
Cara Road nineteen sixty eight. It was that's a long
(49:51):
long time ago.
Speaker 8 (49:52):
He's not as old as he looks, well, that's very.
Speaker 5 (49:55):
Fine, George, but I'm going to go there. I'm going
to I think it'll be a draw. I've got a
fitting one one. I can't see us winning, but I'd
love it to be the case one one for me.
Speaker 6 (50:07):
As Jeff said, sixty eight, that's twenty games there we've
not won. I think we're going to win. I don't
think Norwige has like being bought much this close season.
I think we're a really good team at the moment.
I think they'd be kicking at their rills to get
out there and show the manager what we can do.
(50:30):
I think we're going to win it to nil.
Speaker 7 (50:32):
Nice George, Well, I don't think you ever get an
easy game at Norwich. They are generally a very you know,
one city team, a big team. They get big crowds
as far, I don't think I can hardly ever remember
when Norwich have done poorly in the Championship. But in
saying that, I think our team is really growing and
(50:55):
I think we will start off the season getting a
drawer here at Norwich, which which I think will be
a fairly good result.
Speaker 8 (51:02):
What sort of Georgia reckon, I think it'll be one
one one.
Speaker 1 (51:06):
Okay, Well, I'm gonna go with Pat and I think
we're gonna win.
Speaker 3 (51:09):
I mean, obviously it will be the first win against
Norwich at the.
Speaker 1 (51:13):
Carra Road in my lifetime.
Speaker 7 (51:14):
I think it's Jeff was a boy.
Speaker 3 (51:18):
I am going to I am going to go with
the win. So Barnet beat Newport. Newport beat Barnett in
the week to progress into the first round of the
Caravelle Cup. We'll be heading to Rodney Parade in the
first round. Pat will start with you, oh, Newport counting
away in the first round of the Caravell Cup. It's
not a competition.
Speaker 6 (51:35):
We usually do well in bok no and no one's
really that bother. I don't think it'd be nice for
him to put some of a youngster say out against them.
I don't think it's a must win. People probably do
with their actually, but I think we'll we'll and I
think it'll be a one nil.
Speaker 8 (51:56):
Yes I will.
Speaker 7 (51:57):
I'm sort of sitting in Pat's camp on really, I
wonder how much the club will be It's not very
nice to say this, bothered about the Caraboa Cup, but
I think millwell over these last several seasons are a
much better club than we used to be. We used
to play these games and get knocked out. I think
(52:19):
now we play these games and we win because we're
a much better team. So I expect us to not
sweep pop Newporterside, but I think we will actually beat
them quite convincingly.
Speaker 5 (52:33):
Are in a different camp to the other two. I
think the Carabar Cup's very important. I think it's a
great opportunity to get. You will go through one round
and we can draw a Premier League club, go through
two grounds and we can draw one that's qualified for
Europe this year. We never do it. I remember losing
at Cambridge. Was that last summer or the summer before.
(52:56):
We weren't very good there. But I care not the
one does like. I've got to be sure about that.
I was hoping we played Barnet. Newport's a silly place
to go on Tuesday in August. They went on penalties,
didn't they. Newport were two up at half time. Barnett
came back because a ninety eight minute winner from Barnett
from an equalizer from Barnett. Yeah, sorry, it went to penalties.
(53:20):
I have my fingers crossed. I gotta be honest. I
can't see myself traveling to Newport. But I think under
this manager, with the squad of players we've got fighting
for places, I think we'll win at Newport County.
Speaker 10 (53:36):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (53:37):
Well I'm going to go with the win as well.
I think we'll win and I'm on the fence. Is
it the squad we've got. Do we just focus on
the league and try and be promoted or do we
really go for it in these competitions? As Jeff said,
you can get these Premier League teams and.
Speaker 6 (53:55):
I think the Cup, I think it's always.
Speaker 1 (53:57):
I'm expecting to win the LEA.
Speaker 8 (54:00):
Now you're only young, didn't you.
Speaker 3 (54:05):
We'll started the first home game then Middlesbrough at home
three o'clock kickoff at the Den?
Speaker 1 (54:09):
Jeff, what do you reckon for that one?
Speaker 9 (54:12):
That's a win.
Speaker 5 (54:13):
So I don't want to say too much more than that,
but I think the fans will go to that game
expecting to win, possibly a bit overconfident about winning. But yes,
I do believe that we will start a home campaign
with a win.
Speaker 1 (54:31):
Pat Edward side coming to the didn't.
Speaker 6 (54:34):
It was Burrows like a bit of a dodgy side
for us, aren't I? But being at home it will
be a win. George briefs.
Speaker 7 (54:44):
Yeah, they're never the most exciting team in the world.
I think it's something to do with the horrible shirts
that they wear, but that's another thing, another discussion for
another day, football shirts. I got to say that I
I think I'm very quite excited actually on my standards
(55:04):
for this season. I think we've got a really good
team and I think we're going to hit the ground
running on that first home match and I think we're
going to sweep them aside.
Speaker 6 (55:13):
Actually, George will stick with you for this.
Speaker 3 (55:15):
Once sheffild United away, it might be a bit of
a more tougher game. But what do you think.
Speaker 7 (55:20):
Yeah, I think Sheffield United normally and one of the
very best teams in the Championship. That's why they go
up quite often and why they got rid of Chris Wilder.
Speaker 8 (55:32):
I never know.
Speaker 7 (55:32):
I think he's one of the best managers in the division.
I know they didn't make, you know, they got relegated.
I didn't make going up, but you know, I think
it's an odd call. But I think Sheffield United are
going to suffer this year from a not doing quite
so well and I think they're not going to have
the normal good season that they do, so I'm quite
(55:55):
confident we could go there and give them a very
good game.
Speaker 1 (55:58):
Actually, finally, very quickly, yeah yeah, and then Jeff very quickly.
Speaker 5 (56:06):
I've got to point out what's common is that Norwich
new manager, Chevel new manager, right manager, Yeah, Middlesbrough new manager.
We're playing them at the right time in my opinion.
Speaker 9 (56:20):
Oh Win, the.
Speaker 3 (56:20):
Big boys coming to the coming to the den on
the thirtieth of August.
Speaker 1 (56:24):
Wrexham Pat just you will go for now?
Speaker 6 (56:27):
Right?
Speaker 10 (56:28):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (56:29):
I did look them up a bit before we came
here and they just signed Connor Cody for two million.
They've already topped their club record transfer twice this summer
they look into and it seems to be on the cards.
They're signing Nathan Broadheads from Ipswich and they're talking about
seven point five million. I mean, that's the club that
want to go places. I think everyone will be watching
(56:52):
their progress. I think they're the young pretenders of the division.
They're buying their way through. But I prediction we'll beat them. Cool,
brilliant all right then, so do you want to watch
the lines?
Speaker 3 (57:04):
