Speaker 2 (00:01):
I'm Bethanie and you are listening to the monthly mill
Fan News and Views show broadcasting live on Maritime Radio
on ninety six point five FM and on the Maritime website.
Speaker 3 (00:11):
And welcome to our Millwall monthly new Millwall News and
Views show at Maritime Radio Studios.
Speaker 4 (00:28):
I'm Miles Thornton from Bermondsey, excited to introduce our panel,
Ted Robinson and Stan Godwin from Bexley, along with Jeff Burnage,
a former Millwall chairman and board member from ted Losso
Land of Richmond. These passionate Millwall fans also bring in
experience in football, broadcasting, radio and podcasts. We'll cover all
things Millwall today and catch up with a former Millwall
(00:51):
lion whose skills helped him to become a fan favorite
at Millwall, a club he spent almost twenty three years with. First,
we will view our August fixtures Jeff Norwich Away. On
the opening day we beat them two goals to one.
How did you How did you see that one going well?
Speaker 5 (01:07):
Of course it looked a very tough start to start
the season, and we played very well, particularly in the
first half, maybe even the first hour, but the last
ten minutes was a bit a bit nerve jangling, wasn't it,
And so all in all, I was a very happy
bunny by the time that game finished, and the plans
(01:30):
were in great voice and the players enjoyed our support.
Speaker 4 (01:34):
Yeah. Well, just a couple of days after that, we
played our first game in the car About Cup this
season and we beat Newport one nil away from home,
Ry Leonard scoring the goal in that games down, What
did you what did you reckon of that one?
Speaker 6 (01:47):
Well, it was quite an interesting game really because I
didn't really know what to expect a lot from Newport
County and fairness and I thought, you know, all things considered,
they played quite well.
Speaker 7 (01:58):
So it was it was never going to be an
easy game as such, and we're in case we'll there
was just rock up and the goals would come flowing.
But now I thought we played okay and in the
end we run out deserved winners. But no, I mean,
there wasn't you know it was It was a game
that was unspectacular, you know, it was like more workman like.
(02:20):
But in the in the past, in these sort of
games sometimes we've slipped up, but on this occasion we didn't.
In fairness and no, we won the game and deserved
these other in my view.
Speaker 4 (02:31):
Yeah, well you're talk of slipping upstand. We'll start with
you here. Home form hasn't really gone to plan, has it.
The first home game the season Middlesbrough home three and
all loss.
Speaker 6 (02:40):
Well, yeah, it was well it was a nightmare, right,
you know. I mean again, Middlesborough is one of these
clubs or teams as can you expect to be up
and around the promotion team, although they've faded off a
bit last year. But no, I mean, but the thing was,
in the first half we played quite well, you know.
(03:02):
I mean, I thought in the first half we was
doing okay, more than on our own. And then in
the second half, for one reason or another, we just
didn't get her act together and you know, so we
ended up losing the game three nils. So on the
balance of play, you could say, well, okay, they deserve
to win it if we had done what we played
in the but it just didn't happen.
Speaker 4 (03:24):
Yeah, in the first half we played really well, didn't
we But second half it just sort of dropped off
and then that was it. But nevertheless, back to the
away games of the Jaffet Tanganga Derby as he obviously
that week made his move to Shuffle United. We beat
them one nil away from home. Jeff, what did you
make of that? Luke Kundle scored to go in that game?
Speaker 5 (03:42):
He did, and excuse me, he's an interesting player, obviously,
an attacking midfield player, possibly what today you might describe
as a number ten. It's great for him to get
off the mark in front of again the away fans
who were in brilliant voice again and a fantastic result.
(04:03):
I think we handled that easier than the Knowledge game slightly.
But you come to me with the two away victories.
I'm grateful for that because easier to comment on a
victory miles than a defeat. But yeah, all in all,
it constituted a very good first three games of the season.
Speaker 4 (04:26):
Well, Stan, we'll give you a little bit of victory
victory talk now. A very very youthful mill Side took
on a half you fall half strong side of commentary
city Side in the Cabal Cups second round, Mass no
longer got off the got off the mark for Millwall
and a two one win.
Speaker 6 (04:41):
Yeah, I mean, and to be fair a commentry, I
think they didn't mess about by playing reserves on one
thing and another. I don't mean they tended to put
out players. It was they recognized first team, although they're
kept you. I don't know I but he is now
transferred to rec Vidie wasn't around, he weren't even on
(05:01):
the bench. But we played really well and the team
we had out, one or two of them was sort
of new, and it was they was up for it.
But we won the game and deserved it. So I thought,
I thought Grant in the descent of the defense, I
thought in that game he was absolutely outstanding.
Speaker 4 (05:19):
He was. He really was.
Speaker 6 (05:20):
Yeah, and he's And when he took his goal, I
think it was Phil Coleman made the point it was
a proper defenders goal, like you know from mc gold.
He just wild in and edit it and they keep
read no chance. But now I thought we played well
and we fully deserved to win the game.
Speaker 4 (05:36):
Yeah, definitely, Jeff, we'll go back over to you on
the commentary game.
Speaker 5 (05:41):
Oh yeah, I was just thrilled with that. I really
really enjoyed that game.
Speaker 4 (05:44):
I know next year you really didn't do it.
Speaker 5 (05:46):
We played I think we made eight changes, might have
been nine. I think commentary made a few less. We
introduced Grant at the back, Jack Howland, I think I'm
not mistaken. It's a while ago now to testing our memory.
Speaker 4 (06:01):
Made his debut.
Speaker 5 (06:02):
He played the whole game, I think, making his debut
very very good feet, very very neat, and very good
at retaining possession in tight spaces. In the end, commentary
brought on their big hitters, didn't they. Radoni came on,
what's the had you right? Came on? Talk came on.
(06:25):
But we held out quite comfortably. So I was really
thrilled with that performance and looking forward to a nice
draw in the next round.
Speaker 4 (06:34):
Well we'll get onto that a little bit later on, Jeff.
But back to the Championship fixtures. It was another loss
unfortunately at home in the league. A zero percent winning
record in the league at home this year? What Stan,
what do you think is going wrong? Is it? Is
it anything in particular? Do you think?
Speaker 8 (06:53):
Or?
Speaker 4 (06:53):
I mean because the two year lost to Wrexham at
home as well.
Speaker 6 (06:56):
Well, yeah, I mean I have to say, right, I
mean it slightly irritates me because you get Wrexham dinch
and you now got Birmingham that division Now there's always
the inference, right not I'm not saying the clubs have
said it, but there's always the inference because they've heard
all this big money, they can sign all these players.
(07:16):
All they got to do is turn up and it
happens right now. I watched Wrexham on Saturday. I weren't
impressed with them at all, and I think they're going
to struggle right in this division. I mean, they've beat
it's that day, but I don't I don't think. I
think they're going to struggle. And I also think Birmingham
are going to struggle because they had it easy last season, right.
(07:38):
But frankly, we were rubbish. I mean, it's no there's
no point in denying the fact or trying to say, oh, well,
the sun was in the wrong part of the sky
or some rubbish. We were rubbish that day and.
Speaker 5 (07:52):
We got beat and that's the end of it, the
end of it. Indeed, I think that's some important thing
to say about that game. Miles Stranger. We were disrupted
by some late additions to our injury lists. We didn't
have a midfield player to play with la Wongo and
fortunately we signed him in the summer, and thank goodness
(08:14):
we did. We had to play Luke Tundrale as a
pivot midfield player. He's not that, and that meant that
we played far too far more balls straight to the
front than we would normally have done. And it was
on a day where Doma was on the left, he
wouldn't be first choice. Femi disease would be. Neglie was
(08:35):
on the right and coming into midfield he was off color.
He was taken off quite an early stage, and we
looked very disjointed, very depressing. But then you look at
the stats when you get home. We've had twenty shots
in that game and I think only three on target. Yeah,
and I think I'm right in saying Wrexham had five shots,
(08:57):
three on target, two goals. Looked at that way. I
cheered up a bit, only a bit.
Speaker 4 (09:03):
Though only a bit only.
Speaker 6 (09:05):
I mean the second goal was aed to win it.
I think I was actually, to be fair, I was
struggling to remember.
Speaker 5 (09:14):
I think I've tried to wipe that home defeat out
of my mind. Home games in the league, no goals.
That's why I was pleased with the Conventry game that
I commented on a few minutes ago. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (09:24):
Yeah, Well, going back to the commentary game in the
Carabell Cut, we then drew Crystal Palace. We've gone from
not playing Crystal Palace in many years to playing them
twice in two years.
Speaker 6 (09:36):
The only thing that bothers me with all this in Palace,
right is you know, I mean I'm just waiting for
the immediately start and course I'm waiting for tall But no,
I mean we're left to deal with it, will we?
Speaker 4 (09:54):
Yeah, yeah, definitely, Jeff, Crystal Palace at home in a
couple of your thoughts, Well, I'm away.
Speaker 5 (10:02):
It wasn't what we would have liked. You always want
to home side, always if you're on away time. At
this stage, it's nice a bit of a bit of nonsense.
It's going to be on the air waves and in
the print media for that game. But look we were.
We played them with ten men for eighty odd minutes
(10:25):
in March. We lost two to one. I think there's
two one.
Speaker 4 (10:29):
Wasn't it three?
Speaker 9 (10:30):
One?
Speaker 5 (10:30):
Was it three one?
Speaker 10 (10:31):
In the air?
Speaker 5 (10:31):
Was there a late one? We held them for most
of that game. I think there's a possible result there.
I fancy us on penalties.
Speaker 4 (10:42):
Yeah, Alex new was only new to the job, wasn't
he when we when we faced Christal Palace last time out.
I think now he's got a lot more experience as
mill manager will know. I think he will know how
to be christ Pallas. I really think he will, and
I think we will.
Speaker 5 (10:53):
Marster, how do you think he'll play it? Do you
think he will rotate or do you think he will
play his strongest team because it is let's face it, it
is palace.
Speaker 4 (11:01):
It is crystal palace. Yeah, it'd be a risk to
play a team like he did against commentary, and granted
it works against commentary, because I didn't think it would. Personally,
I didn't think it would. I thought, okay, But I
think he'll go a little bit stronger this time. I
think he will the whole.
Speaker 5 (11:15):
Way or not.
Speaker 4 (11:16):
Maybe not the whole way, just a little, but I
don't think maybe Jack people like Jack Callan, and I
think he'll get four ninety minutes. Put it that way.
Speaker 5 (11:22):
Fingers crossed everyone. We need, we need to get one
over on those people.
Speaker 4 (11:28):
Good friend of mine's a crystal palace, and so we'd
love to go win against The only thing I would
say all our choice of words. By the way, Jeff, yeah,
I did change it at the last minute. Did you
notice that the only thing I would say, You know,
what we don't want is their chairman.
Speaker 6 (11:47):
I mean a period of silence will be most welcome
because if he opens his mayup and starts, you know,
regurgitating what took place. But I said it is going
to be traveled.
Speaker 4 (11:56):
The good thing is is not life. So there's no
live half time interview this year.
Speaker 5 (12:00):
And he seems to be losing a little bit of
power at Palace, doesn't he. There's been a bit of
a to and fro going on behind the scenes there
as a result of that. The deadline day stuff. I
don't think you'll hear much from him on that day.
Speaker 4 (12:13):
No, no, right then very quickly before we hear from
Kyle Bennett and myself for about the mill villine S's
in the community trust Will Smallbone, I wanted to touch
on this signed for us from Southampton and a loan
for the season. Jeff, what did you make of that
signing because I personally think it's a great signing. Came
out of absolutely nowhere and Will smo small signs online.
Speaker 5 (12:34):
I just wish we had an Opton Shabui because I
think that's a I think he's a superb player. He
didn't play very much last season when they're in the
Premier League.
Speaker 4 (12:44):
I don't think he's been hackled by injuries, hasn't he.
Speaker 5 (12:47):
I don't know if it's injuries or Russell Martin didn't
fancy him or what. But in the season, in their
promotion season, I wouldn't be surprised to hear if you've
got player of the season. He's a really terrific player.
Uh And as I said, I would love to think
there was an option to buy. I don't think there is.
We haven't been told there is. But in an area,
(13:08):
as I said in the commentary, game where not the
contentry game of the Wrexham game, where we're desperate for
someone to play in that position alongside alongside the Luongo
we badly need of the central midfield player. We've got
an absolute pearler of a sign in there.
Speaker 4 (13:24):
Yeah, definitely.
Speaker 10 (13:25):
Right then.
Speaker 4 (13:25):
We are hoping to hear from Ted Robinson very a
little bit later, but for now we're going to hear
from Kay Bennett, who brings us the results from the
Mill Community Trust and the Mill Lies.
Speaker 11 (13:36):
Mills starts up for three to three draw all the
way they followed this up with unfortunate two one defeat
against Market, I suppose before drawing of one one.
Speaker 9 (13:46):
Against Saturn on a Wednesday night. They completed the month
with a three navictory over new Haven. They see something
fish place in the London and Southeast Bridge of Wieslock
Allan's on.
Speaker 4 (13:59):
So and here then is my report for Maritime Radio
on the Lionesses against new Haven. The Millwall Lionesses picked
up their first win of the season on Sunday afternoon
with a composed three milway victory over New Haven, who
continued to search for their opening points after three straight defeats.
The homeside thought they had struck first on thirty one
(14:19):
minutes when the ball hit the back of the net.
Celebrations were quickly cut short as the assistant referee flagged
for offside. That proved to be a turning point, with
Millwall grown into the game and punishing their hosts before
the interval. In forty two minutes, Kira Watling broke the deadlock,
slotting home to put the visitors in front. Barely two
minutes later, mere Lockett doubled the advantage, leaving New Haven
(14:41):
stunned by two goals in quick succession. The Lionesses carried
their momentum into the second half and nearly stealed the
game later on when they were awarded a penalty in
the eighty second minute. However, a spot kick was well
saved by the new Haven goalkeeper, keeping the score unrespectable,
but Millwall were not to be denied. After four minutes
added on time.
Speaker 12 (15:01):
Substitute Knita Throp snitted her first goal for the club
to complete the scoring and ensure all three points headed
back to London. The wins ends Mills wait for a
first victure of the campaign, having opened with a three
to three draw away at Ashford Town and a narrow
two underfee at home to bark In followed by a
one one stale mate away at Sutton. For new Haven,
(15:21):
it was another difficult outing after a heavy seven to
two loss to Dartford on the opening day and a
four nil defeat at Brentford. This latest setback leaves them
without a goal since their season opah and struggling to
find the first few points of the season. However, as
Milall looked to progress with this fine form, they next
faced Talking Wanderers at the sat Meadowbank Football Ground next Unday,
(15:42):
the seventh of September, for a three thirty kickoff Miles

We welcome an absolute Millwall favourite. He joined at ten,
played nearly four hundred games over twenty three years, was
Player of the year in twenty nine ten and served
as a club captain in his final year. After ending
his playing correct Bromley, he became a coach and assistant
manager for departing in February. Welcome and un done.
Speaker 5 (19:00):
Good evening guys, Hello Donnie, what you're allen.
Speaker 4 (19:04):
Good to hear from you all, and unfortunately can't be
with us tonight, so you've got me asking his questions. Okay, Alan,
we've seen you back at the dinner this season, we
spent nearly half of your life. What are your thoughts
about the squads last season?
Speaker 6 (19:19):
Ahead?
Speaker 4 (19:19):
Oh, be the new lounges.
Speaker 19 (19:21):
Yeah, I've been there twice and we've lost twice, so
I'm not sure I'm gonna be invited back a third time.
Speaker 10 (19:27):
Because we haven't had much luck at home.
Speaker 19 (19:30):
But to answers about the lounges, I was invited to
the first game as well, and I was stunned with
the redevelopment of the new lounges.
Speaker 10 (19:41):
It wasn't it was like walking into the den.
Speaker 19 (19:43):
It was really really remarkable, and hospitality was amazing, so
fantastic the new lounges. The performances at home, they haven't
been neck great, but the all around the place. The
last two times I've been there was a new excitement
(20:05):
and an excitement of this year could be our year.
And we know in meal Wall we've never done things
the easy way. So it's a long season and it's
an exciting season for Meal. I think everyone's got the
buzz that this year could be an exciting year for us, definitely, Jeff.
Speaker 5 (20:23):
Over All, it's great to talk to you again. Now
we face both Charlton and Crystal Palace in our next
two games. How do you think we will fare?
Speaker 19 (20:36):
I really wanted to go to the to the chardwe game, Jeff,
but my daughters starts UNI that day, so I've got
to go to Exeter. But I was really excited to
go to it, but I've got to do this for
my daughter.
Speaker 10 (20:49):
How do I think we'll go for it?
Speaker 19 (20:50):
I think look at the moment Mill was away from
was better than our home form. You know, Jeff, Over
the years we played Charlwind, we've been fairly. We've had
a lot of good results. It's very rarely we get
beaten at the valley. So I'd be confident in terms
of us going to Chowen and with our wave form
at the moment. It's been good for some reason we
don't know, but it's been good. And so our fantasy
(21:14):
is a Charlton Palace, Jeff. Is a again another derby
game and a game that's going to look it's the
last game I think there was. It was a good
game and important and a game that I think that
it can go either way. Like there wasn't much in
it last game, Jeff, as you know, and look on
(21:34):
the day, Meil can be a match for anyone.
Speaker 10 (21:36):
So it's just what Mill side turns up.
Speaker 5 (21:39):
Our fans are so confident, but I'm not so sure.
I think I'm a great believer in motivation and I
think they will be desperate to beat us.
Speaker 19 (21:51):
It will be tough, and Nathan Jones is that has
done well at Chown, and like you said, it ain't
going to be a walk over, Jeff, I don't think
many any many games are in the championship. So you
can go there confident, but you have to be on
your guard for these games. And Nathan Jones will have
things up your sleeve. He'll know what mill will like
and it'd be an entertaining game for them to watch.
(22:14):
But like you said, you can't be over confident Jeff
going into any game in the championship, because that's when
you're at your most vulnerable.
Speaker 5 (22:20):
Yes, I agree, Thanks Donny.
Speaker 6 (22:23):
What's your Allan? There is one story would be that
so many many fans ask you to repeat. This is
topical too. How did you manage to keep Crystal Palace's
start and England international Wilfred Zahar in your back pocket?
Speaker 20 (22:40):
Yeah?
Speaker 19 (22:41):
I mean I keep this story, asked a lot guys,
and it's still going but.
Speaker 10 (22:46):
Cool.
Speaker 19 (22:46):
That was a night, that was a Tuesday night, but
he was There was a there was a story that
got sort of stitched up in the paper during the
week because someone asked me a question about him and
I said he wasn't worth twenty pounds, and they.
Speaker 10 (23:00):
Blew it up.
Speaker 19 (23:01):
They blew it up on the press, and then obviously
they blew it up that were knowing that he was
come up against me. So I sort of opened myself
up there to get to get criticized because I said
he wren't worth twenty million, and then I'm up against him.
So I thought myself, I've got up a film tonight
because if he wasn't worth twenty million, and I have
a bad game it could well be worth twenty million
after this game. So look, I did what I always do.
(23:25):
I I was a good defender, one B one defender.
I'd use mind tricks and I'd use my own ability.
So I'd watched the player throughout the week, and I
knew what his strengths were. And you give him time
and space to run at you with the ball, He's going.
Speaker 10 (23:40):
To hurt you.
Speaker 19 (23:41):
So every time he looked like he was going to
touch the ball, I was just breathing down his neck.
I think I got an early yellow card and I
was just never give him any chance to breathe with
the ball. So I think after forty five minutes he'd
given up and gone over the other side and they swapped.
Speaker 10 (23:56):
Him with Balassi. So my point was right.
Speaker 19 (23:59):
I I didn't think he was valued at that, But look,
the boys had a great career. I had one of
the best games from me all that night, and I
used to enjoy the one bi one jewels Adele towabat
Lloyd Dyer, all of the one bi one jewels. I
used to enjoy it because that was my game, defending
onebi ones and tackling and being a strong, solid defender.
Speaker 6 (24:24):
Yeah, we faced both Chartlin and Crystal Palace in our
next two games. As you think we will fare.
Speaker 19 (24:32):
I think the expectations are really high this year because
we finished the season is so strong last year. But
I do feel like we have to be realistic and
I think a top ten finished for Meal was a
very good season.
Speaker 10 (24:45):
Every year. If we finish in the top ten, that's
a very good season. What what what? What I think?
Like last year?
Speaker 19 (24:52):
I think if you're in the top ten going in
with four or five games left and you can make
the playoffs, you're in a good position because I think
we will finish the season strong. So it's about timing
whether we can get in the top six all year
and stay in the top six.
Speaker 10 (25:07):
If I was the bet on that, no.
Speaker 19 (25:09):
If I was the bet on Meal making the playoffs
in the last four or five games of the season
and doing it the really hard way where we all
and it's done in the last game of the season,
that would be where our money would more likely go on.
Because I feel like it is a long season and
there will be some ups and downs, but we still
haven't found our home form yet. If we can find
(25:30):
our home form, then we have got every chance of
making them playoffs, and I think that's our best bet.
Speaker 5 (25:37):
It's Jeff here again, Dunny. I think we finished eighth
last season and it's going to be disappointing if we
don't at least match that. On the other hand, we
are of course at different eleven this time. Another thing
I'd like to ask you. You had a great career
at Millwall, but if you could do it all again,
(25:57):
would you do anything any differently?
Speaker 19 (26:00):
If I do it all again, change It's a great question, Jeff,
and appreciate the calm words. There's one regret I was
when I was when I was with all Away and
I was I was promised a new deal, and the
regret I would say was that I never I was
too nice, Jeff.
Speaker 10 (26:18):
I was too nice at the time.
Speaker 19 (26:20):
And you see the players like Ezac and stuff like
that kickup fuss and football can change very quickly. And
I was on the Verger sign and a new two
year deal on on the big money that the other
players was on. But I trusted the club and I
trusted not the club that all Away to give me
the deal and get it through. But things didn't work out,
(26:40):
and then he was sacked and in that year I
was released. So one of my regrets, Jeff, was that
I didn't I was probably too nice in that sense.
I was captain, I was in a good place, and
I didn't strike while the iron was hot. So in
that sense, I'd say it was a regret of mine,
but a lot I had twin three fantastic years there,
(27:01):
and I've got a great relationship with a club and
they've given me a great a great in everything, like
I've got a family and all that, I've got the
relationship with the club. So I can't look back in
it with any real regrets, Jeff, because the club's been
good to me, and I'm very fortunate to have had
the promotions, the appearances, all the HighRes with the club,
(27:22):
the amount of Wembley's we had, Jeff, from all the
good times and players I've met, I've had an unbelievable
career at me All and to play one I always
said to play one game at meals special. To play
nearly four hundred and to have a testimonial player of
the season, goal of the season and all the accolades
that come with it, and all the successes, then I
(27:43):
can't look back with many regrets.
Speaker 10 (27:44):
Jeff, because it all worked out in the end, very
good for me.
Speaker 5 (27:48):
Before I go, Dunny, and before you go, yeah, Alan,
it's me again.
Speaker 6 (27:56):
Do you think that man is a city style of
play develop known as positional player has been tumbled tumbled?
Speaker 19 (28:06):
I think that coaches are getting better, I think analysts
are getting better, and I think the software and technology
is getting better now. So I think the game is
moving so fast. And has it been what was the
word mumbled you say, or.
Speaker 6 (28:23):
Tumble?
Speaker 4 (28:23):
Tumbled?
Speaker 10 (28:24):
Tumbled? Has it been tumbled?
Speaker 19 (28:25):
It just becomes you just need to like teams work
you out and and and you have to change and adapt.
And Pep's way at the moment asn't work. But I
do feel like he's he's the squad is going through
a transition and they are spending, but they're not as
strong as they were two years ago. Is that they've
been tumbled like you said? Or is it because that
(28:47):
that they've got a new new squad, new players and
they're trying to transition into a into a new a
new squad sort of thing. So look, that's still up
for debate, But you ain't going to continue you No
one continued at the top. Then they won four Premier Leagues.
I don't think there is a time where you're going
to go through a cycle and all the teams go
(29:08):
go go through it. Arsenal, Man United, Tottenham, Man City
are going through it now, so they'll come back again.
I'm sure, whether it's with PEP or not, they'll come
with They'll come through again. I just feel like the
coaches are getting better and the Premier League top six
are getting stronger, and Man City and as far away
as what they were once were.
Speaker 4 (29:28):
As always, it's great to speak with you before you
leave us leave us. Could you tell us about your
highlights of the twenty nine ten seasons where you were
not ever present present but the fans virtue US Player
of the Year of the year.
Speaker 10 (29:40):
Yeah, that season such a crucial year.
Speaker 19 (29:42):
I sort of I missed the playoff final I think,
right at the back end of it. But I scored
some important goals in that season and some of the
some of the games I played in were important and
I played a massive part in that to get Player
of the Season and goal of the season the walls
all the way last week.
Speaker 10 (30:00):
It goal was an important goal.
Speaker 19 (30:03):
I think I've got five or six that season, but Look,
it was a group, It was a group collective effort.
Anyone could have won that award, and look, it was
one award that I wanted to night. But as a
team we were we were a great team and it
was a great occasion and and the boys finished the
job at Wembley, and yeah, to be part of that,
(30:24):
it was. It was brilliant memory that I'll never never
forget to win Player of the Season at meal as
well as it is a special to be voted by
the fans, and it's a special award and many a
players over the years have deserved to get it, So
I just feel privileged that to have been awarded it.
I've still got I've got very few trophies still in
my house now because they take up so much room
(30:46):
and with the photos the missus have got, I've got
about three three trophies in my in my house and
one of them is the Player of the Season.
Speaker 10 (30:54):
So it's it's definitely not moving.
Speaker 4 (30:58):
It's gonna lease it allan. As you know, Ted can't
be with us tonight, but he does send his best
wishes and looks forward to speaking with you in the future.
Until next time, all the best to you and yours mate,
and thank you very much for making your debut on

Speaker 19 (31:10):
Always a pleasure, gents, love it really thanks for having
me on and look good luck. Enjoyed the national break,
but you will mission for the next game. But good
luck in the next game at Child and I'll see
you again soon.
Speaker 5 (31:22):
There is one regret that I have, which is that
you didn't get those extra two years at the Den.
Speaker 10 (31:27):
Thanks Jeff, Thank you, appreciate. Good to hear from you,
Jeff and Stan. Good to hear guys. Give ted my
regards guys, and I'll see you down at Den soon.
Speaker 6 (31:34):
Thank you very much.
Speaker 5 (31:35):
Good I buy it out.
Speaker 4 (31:36):
We'll be back very soon. But just after this Maritime radio.
Speaker 1 (31:41):
We are married time radio.
Speaker 21 (31:44):
I've looked after my kids since they were born. Now
they've got kids, I still want to look after them.
I don't want them struggling to make decisions about my
money or my health if I can't. So we made
a lasting power of attorney. If I can't speak for myself,
they'll speak for me. It's a weight off for all
(32:05):
of us, isn't it.
Speaker 20 (32:07):
Yes, ma'am, lasting power of attorney, search your voice, your decision.
Speaker 15 (32:15):
Oh I'm having another hot flush this morning and I
didn't sleep at all.

Thanks very much, Bethany. I'm Mars Thornton and I'm thrilled
to be here with our wonderful panel. Ted Robinson, Stand
Godwin and Jeff Burnage. You've already heard well, sorry, Ted
isn't here with us tonight. You've already heard a little
bit about the incredible work that the Millwall Community Trust
do and the positive impact that it has on the
communities it serves. But we'll move on to talking about
(33:57):
Last Saturday now, before the Wrecksham game, the first inductees
to the Forever Lions Club were introduced to Millwall fans.
Tim Robinson picked up the story.
Speaker 22 (34:07):
I'm Ted Robinson reporting for Maritime Radio from Millwall's Den
on a very special day, so special that the first
three players are being inducted as Forever Lyons, a type
of former players association. This is the first time in
the club's one hundred and forty year history the Millwall
Football Club and the Milwall Community Trust have had such
(34:28):
an organization that recognizes both men and women who have
played for Millwall. Firstly, I will speak with the most
senior former player, who spent eight outstanding seasons at the
Den and still holds the record for the most appearances
as a goalkeeper, a record that has never been beaten
in the clubs one hundred and forty year history. He
(34:49):
was also the first Millwall player to be selected for
England since Red Smith in nineteen thirty eight. He remains
a passionate supporter of the club and is often seen
at the de In vigorously supporting trust events and cheering
on the Lions. He's also an idol of mine. It's
Brian King. You must be delighted to be inducted into
(35:10):
the Forever Lions Club.
Speaker 23 (35:12):
Yes, I am delighted to be one of the first
three to be inducted into the Forever Lions Club. It
really is an honor for us players who have represented
Millwall and I can only say, on behalf of Prue
and Les that we are very honored to receive this
award from this great club.
Speaker 22 (35:34):
Thanks Brian, and congratulations and award that is well deserved.
Our second recipient is the sole team capching of Millwall
Football Club to lead the Lions to the top flight.
He was a talented and ambitious midfielder who joined the
club while we were scauting another player. He quickly became
a passionate Lion. He's famously quoted as saying, when I
(35:56):
came to Millwall, I realized everywhere else just been a job.
Since then, he has been a dedicated part of the club,
actively participating in Trust events and taking on roles with
our academy Millwall Lionesses. And that's Day hosting Les Briley.
What an accolade. To join the Forever Lions Club.
Speaker 24 (36:18):
Been an honor and a pleasure to have played a
big part in this great club's history. Sean Day, the
CEO of the Community Trust, has set up the Forever
Lions Club. Brian King, myself and Pru Buckley have the
(36:38):
honor of being the first three members. We are looking
forward to working with Sean and his lovely staff.
Speaker 22 (36:49):
Thank you congratulations, Les, you are the man who let
us road in the top flight and I'm most worthy
of this recognition.
Speaker 10 (36:58):
And let's celebrate a remarkable woman from.
Speaker 22 (37:00):
Mill Lioness's early days in women's football who also represented
England's senior team and recognized as one of the national
team's legacy players. In nineteen ninety seven, she won the
FA Women's Cup with Millwall, one of three major trophies
that season, including the Kent Cup and the League Cup.
She made over five hundred appearances, even serving as a
(37:22):
player manager. Now she is the head of match day
ticketing at Millwall brew Buckley. Even though she can't be
with us right now, I can still vividly picture her
old in the FA Cup and the pride she brought
to us all. Today she reaches another prayer milestone as
one of the first Free Lions and Lionesses to be
inducted in the Forever Lions Club. Congratulations prove on this
(37:46):
truly special achievement.
Speaker 10 (37:48):
Well done.
Speaker 4 (37:50):
Indeed, indeed so there'll be three more players former players
inducted at the Watford game in September. Thank you very much. Ted. Lastly,
we'll look at our forthcoming fixtures for our next before
well until our next monthly show starts off with the
big one of September. Right the first game in September
after the international break. It's an away game against the
(38:14):
ni Chold Athletic Jetstan.
Speaker 5 (38:20):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (38:20):
Well, Childen, Yeah, it's I always look, I always look
kindly of fondly. I don't say kindly fondly to going
back to the valley. I mean their record that over
the years is pretty good. I mean I have a
the last time, I mean, I have to say this,
(38:41):
the last time I witnessed Chelton beating Millwall, which in
January nineteen sixty eight. Now, if you think about that
for a moment, Lindon Johnson was still the President of
the United States, Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King Acton
been shot and men hadn't even gone to the Moon
(39:02):
at that point. They went there at the end of
the year. So that was the last time I have
witnessed it. So hopefully that run will continue this week.
Speaker 4 (39:11):
Just so you know, there is told there probably is
Toltan fans listening somewhere. It's not just.
Speaker 6 (39:15):
Millwrighte No, I appreciate that, but they say exactly the
same eight rounds. But no, I mean, but shit, but
the games are going to be the game will be
a hard game. I mean, He's not going to be
an easy game for obvious reasons. And that's fine.
Speaker 4 (39:30):
Evan Jones will having right up for it as well,
probably did later.
Speaker 6 (39:34):
On beat So I understand all that. But yeah, I
mean we'll have to sit and see as I'm looking
forward to going down there. So yeah, no, it's it's
a game in it.
Speaker 5 (39:45):
So, yeah, we did lose a game to them, though,
didn't we since nineteen sixty eight. I can't remember. It's
the I seem to remember.
Speaker 6 (39:54):
I mean that was the one January.
Speaker 5 (39:56):
No, No, not nineteen sixty eight. We lost them much
more recently than I think. Yeah, but I know I
said the last one. I wirnes, I witnessed one will
be lost, and I didn't like it. But look, we
are married time radio and Charlton fans do listen as well,
And I must say the biggest compliment I can pay
you is that I love it when we're all beat young.
(40:18):
But I'm not one of those that think it's going
to be a doddle because we always beat them. I
think it's going to be a really, really difficult game.
As I said earlier in this program, they will be
desperate to beat us, absolutely desperate, and they're at home.
Speaker 4 (40:32):
And if anybody can get them to beat us, it'll
be Nathan Jones.
Speaker 5 (40:35):
Right well, to quote an old song. He's been gone
too long, but that's a private joke. Banana Arma sang
a song called that, didn't they? Maathan Jones, he's been
gone too long. But now I'm looking forward enormously to
the game. But I do not think anyone can predict
the result of that game. It's a proper local Derby.
(40:55):
What are we five miles apart from each other, a
very different fan bases. They don't like us. Of course
we love them because we keep beating them, but it's
going to be a tough game, make no mistake of that.
Speaker 6 (41:08):
Well, I'll be in the.
Speaker 4 (41:09):
Press box with Maritime Radio. It's very own Clive Richardson
reporting and broadcasting life for the Maritime Radio together. So
that'd be fun with it. Okay? From one Derby away
game to another Crystal Palace away Tuesday August, oh sorry,
September in the in the Caramell Cup.
Speaker 6 (41:31):
Well, if there's one London club I like to beat
more than any other, it's Crystal Palace And that goes
back ever since I supported me a Wall. You know,
They've always a club, always think there's something special and
all the rest of it. And no, so I mean
I'm hopefully we can we can win the game. I
(41:51):
mean that. You know that goes about saying.
Speaker 4 (41:53):
But we touched on this earlier, didn't we? But yeah, sorry,
we touched on this earlier, didn't we? About about I
think we'll beat them. Jeff said it as well.
Speaker 5 (42:02):
I don't think I said we've beat them, but I'm
not going to go I'm not going to revisit that comment.
I think in honesty it depends on what side they
put out. They've got the European competition in there in
their sites as well. I said, Chanten are desperate to
beat us, how desperate are we to beat them? But
(42:22):
unlike unlike Stan, they are not the London club that
I like to beat the most. No one will need
to guess what that London club is. And the best
day I've had at Upton Park is the aforementioned Women's
Cup game that Prue Buckley was in. We won the
Women's FA Cup at Upston Park that day. That gave
(42:43):
me a lot of pleasure and I'm sorry we can't
go back there. It was a hell of a stadium.
Speaker 4 (42:50):
Well back to the league fixtures, hopefully the first league
win of the season at home Watford at home on
the for an eight o'clockid off on the twenties second
of September. Jeff, it's going to be I think it's
gonna be a tough one under the lights. What do
you reckon?
Speaker 5 (43:06):
Well, the trouble with a monthly shows you're looking ahead,
aren't you? And we do not know? And Palace you know.
I mean if we've got good results against Charlton and Palace,
it will set us up. I love playing Watford. It's
virtually another London dobby. They're just outside the Greater London boundary,
aren't they? And I think the key thing there is
(43:27):
will any of our injured players be back available? You
know there are one or two that don't seem to
be very far away. A lot will depend on that.
That's a tough game. What is it. It's the evening kickoff,
isn't it.
Speaker 4 (43:42):
Yeah, eight o'clock kickoff on Monday.
Speaker 5 (43:44):
Yeah, so that must be live on television.
Speaker 4 (43:46):
I believe, I believe.
Speaker 5 (43:49):
Well, I'll be there at home, and well I predict
a victory.
Speaker 4 (43:55):
Yeah, As you said, Jeff, it's quite hard to predict
a game that is what three games away. But I
don't know who's gonna get injured, hopefully hopefully blooming no one,
but who knows Swansea away? Then Stan the twelve thirty kick?
What do you reckon on that one?
Speaker 6 (44:15):
Yeah, I mean I would, I mean I wouldn't We
would beat Swansea because our recent form against Swansea's not
been that great. So I think we're well over due
to win. And if we're going to go down, if
you know, that's the ideal. But I mean I remember
if some about four or five years ago we went
down here and beat Money expectedly, So hopefully that will
(44:35):
happen again this year. But all games in this division,
none of them are going to be easy, and you're
going to have to earn the right to win the game.
Speaker 5 (44:45):
I don't like going to Swansea much. My strongest memory
of going there is when their mascot still the Swan
beat up Zampa the Lion. So it's not a happy
hunting ground for us. But you know what, I don't
think Swansea the greatest team in the division. We'd have
to go there. I suspect that will be a draw.
Speaker 4 (45:07):
Okay, then so Swansea, you reckon it will be a draw.
We've got one more game to talk about. After the
Swansea game, and that one is Coventry at home. Yet again,
we've only once this season in the Carabell Cup with
our youth team. Jeff, Jeff really enjoyed the first Coventry game.
So I'll start with you.
Speaker 5 (45:24):
I do believe in motivation being a huge factor. It
goes without saying they will not want to lose again,
having lost when they put all their big guns on
in the last half an hour in the Carabell Cup game.
It's too far away from me to have an opinion really,
but they are a decent side. They're going to be
(45:45):
up there again. There is the Joe Edwards factor, who
was our manager not too long ago now assistant to
Frank Lampard. As I say, they will be desperate to
do something at the den. It's five games away. I
haven't got a clue how that's going to go, so
I'll leave it at that.
Speaker 4 (46:04):
Well, we'll review them anyway in the next monthly show.
Speaker 10 (46:08):
But I want to I want to.
Speaker 4 (46:11):
We're a little bit earlier, so I want to touch
on the January signings. I think it was eleven in
the end. Was it eleven January signings in the end
For Millwall. Jeff, how did how would you rate the
window out of ten? That would be the first question.
I'm always nervous if there's too many changes. We did
finish eighth, we came we went to the last game,
(46:33):
which unfortunately we had to go away to Burnley who
were celebrating promotion. That was a really tough ask there.
If we had one there, we'd have been in the playoffs.
Simple as that. You look at the table and the
points we got. I think I'm uneasy when you make
that many changes. But as I said earlier, the championship
(46:54):
improves every season. Every club is improving. If they can
we'll do well.
Speaker 5 (46:59):
If we finish eighth again, if we can beat some
of the teams we've been discussing this evening in the
next five games, it will set us up for a
good run. And as I said earlier, I loved the
Will small Bone signing. The goalkeeper signings were rather pushed
(47:20):
on us, weren't they by by injuries. Both the keepers
look really good as we're talking. I think Max Crocum's
away with New Zealand playing in the World Cup qualifier,
so good luck to Max. Hey, that's a big game.
New Zealand against Australia in a World Cup qualify. Can
you imagine I'm only hoping he's playing. What else did
(47:44):
I like about the window? I was pleased we made
zax Sturge permanently. I was very pleased with the small
Bone one, as I said in particular, but that's that
we've found a lot of younger players which we don't
expect to go straight in the team. You know, however,
(48:09):
the two French lads that we've signed recently who were
going to have to help me with miles their names. Yeah,
I think everyone knows that we signed two French lads,
one from Trois. Yes, you've got the names, myles, Thank
you very much. We'll talk about the first one, which
(48:31):
one the French lad? Never mind, everyone knows who I mean,
but they weren't. I don't think he intended to go
straight into the starting lineup, but I could be wrong.
I think the pick of the signings is small Bone.
It's just a shame is not on an option to buy.
Speaker 4 (48:47):
Very quickly, I wanted to just point out back to
your point about MaTx Crokham against Australia, there is they're
actually paying against them twice they played yesterday. He played
in goal for New Zealands with one loss. Though it
was a one loss.
Speaker 5 (49:00):
Well that will be his fault. And according to those
people down there, I've not long come back from Australia.
I was very fortunate to go there in our spring
and there late summer, and I saw some Australian rules Astralia.
I saw Australian rules, but I also saw one of
their soccer games and it didn't strike me as being
the highest standard, to be honest, but there you go.
(49:23):
Good luck Max on the second game.
Speaker 4 (49:26):
Perfect, Yeah, right then, So do you want to see
the lines? Tickets are on set on the mill REVSI
website at the Den box office. Check out the website

Millwall News and View show. Thanks to our panelist Stan
(49:47):

much for listening by for now.
