Speaker 1 (00:01):

Fan News and Views show, broadcasting live on Maritime Radio
on ninety six point five FM and on the Maritime website.

Speaker 3 (00:18):
Welcome to our monthly mill News and Views on Maritime Radio.
I main in Barclay from South Croydon, introducing our panel.
Stan Godwin from Bexley. Hello, Stan, I'm all right. How
about you? Jeff Bernie is the ex Millwall chairman from Richmond,
ted lassou Land.

Speaker 4 (00:37):
How are you?

Speaker 5 (00:38):
Oh, very happy? Thank you? Amen good and.

Speaker 3 (00:41):
Lifetime fan Dean Wilson from Bromley. Welcome, Dean Great.

Speaker 5 (00:47):
We'll discuss all things.

Speaker 3 (00:49):
More, a chat with a former line and review recent results.
But first of all we'll remember Patrick Murray, a staunch
supporter of millwell as an actor and amongst many notable roles,
is famously known for his portrayal of Mickey Pierce in
the BBC sitcom Only Falls and Horses and in the
film Scum. He passed away on October two at the

(01:13):
age of sixty eight, following a long battle with cancer.
Rip Patrick Murray. We'll miss her. Now returned to the
games since we were last here at Maritime Radio. And
the first one is when we played Chorten Athletic at
the Valley. And I'm going to ask Stan if he

(01:34):
give me a pretty well a review, a brief review
of what he thought about that game.

Speaker 6 (01:41):
Well, so a large extent the game at Chilton. When
his matches are for he would be I mean, I
knew child would be up for the game because they're
desperate to beat us, right, And nothing gave me greater
pleasure that when we equalise, all of a sudden, some
of these people were nearly in tears, you know, because
it knew that the chance had gone.

Speaker 5 (02:01):
But I thought we played okay.

Speaker 6 (02:03):
I mean, you know, for a long periods in the
first half, I thought Chilton because they was desperate for it,
so they was always the better team. But once the
second half got we come out and we got sorted
out properly. I thought it was only a matter of
time before we were scored. I didn't think it was
sack as long as it did, but nevertheless it did,
and that was it so all round. I mean, it

(02:26):
would have been nice to have got the win, but
I think at the end of the day, a one
to one result was fair enough fan Chilten had a
disappointed team one day because they hoped they was going
to be It's for the first time since nineteen ninety six.

Speaker 3 (02:39):
It's a long time. And even Jeff Burnage made a
statement of humor about it, didn't you, Jeff.

Speaker 5 (02:47):
I can't remember being funny about it.

Speaker 3 (02:49):
Amen, Oh, you're going to be reserved this evening. Okay,
then right, Let's turn to a very demonstrable game at
Crystal Palace in the Carabean Cup where they fielded none
less than four changes to this side. Well, we fielded

(03:09):
eight changes to ours. Jeff, what about it? Well?

Speaker 7 (03:14):
I think that the manager had earned the right to
prioritize the league, which he obviously did on that evening.
It showed that we have got some strength and depth,
but we were still ravaged by this injury crisis, which
the manager has made nothing of. But a good performance
and I put that down as a draw. I don't

(03:37):
think any of our penalty ta takers had taken a
penalty in a league game, with possibly one exception, so
I wasn't surprised that the penalty shootout didn't work out
in our favor.

Speaker 3 (03:48):
Now, it was a fantastic performance by a very young team.
They done a great job. Dean, What did you think
about the Watford game? Our first winner of the season
at home?

Speaker 8 (04:00):
For game I were the injuries that we had, I
didn't know that much ope really because what for the
ways usually give us a really good game. But we
got the win. Negli got the goal, Neglar got the goal,
and I actually think what for the teammate turned up
was probably the worst team I've seen.

Speaker 4 (04:17):
In many years.

Speaker 8 (04:17):
For them, they didn't try to come at us. They're
usually very strong up front. There was just nothing there.
So I'm glad we've got the win, especially with the
injuries that we had.

Speaker 3 (04:30):
And then we started off to Swansea where if mister
Delarey was there, we would guarantee a goal for him.
It could have been a hat trick of goals for him,
but unfortunately he's injured. But how did you see that
game go?

Speaker 4 (04:44):
Stand?

Speaker 3 (04:47):
Well?

Speaker 6 (04:47):
It was well, again, it was always going to be
a difficult game because you know, there's no easy games
in this division so to speak. But no, I mean
it was fair enough. I mean Swansea were desperate for
the he playing. These teams are desperate the wind, don't
we But the season ain't been that great so far,
so that anyway, they kept going and you know, and

(05:11):
eventually we got the result that we will. We got
the draw. I mean we'd have preferred three points, but
you know, uh yeah had the next best thing.

Speaker 3 (05:22):
Great great equalizer from Coburnt who rose above three defenders
and an oncoming goalkeeper and put it across the goalkeeper's path.
A great goal, no doubt about it. And well, not last,
but not at least well midweek is the word disaster
appropriate when we played Coventry at the Then let's hear

(05:47):
what Alex Neil had to say about Coventry. Curtsey of
Middill FCS media team.

Speaker 9 (05:54):
Alex, a very frustrated night that then try and sun
that one up for us if you can.

Speaker 10 (05:58):
Yeahly disappointed obviously both boxes the side of the game.
You know, we want clinic on off in their box. Albeit,
I thought we had some good opportunities thout the game
and then when they went forward they were far more
clinical than weaver. You know, first goal is a mistake.
I thought after the mistake you could see it was
a few missplaced passes.

Speaker 3 (06:14):
You see.

Speaker 4 (06:14):
It affected us a little bit.

Speaker 10 (06:15):
I thought we started the second half brightly, we get
done with a good goal for their point of view,
but a disappoint went for us. Striker drops off, doesn't deal,
we don't go tight, we only pops it out and
then he also beats us in the box.

Speaker 4 (06:26):
The third ones are.

Speaker 10 (06:27):
Set play and then obviously we're pushing.

Speaker 4 (06:29):
It try and get the next goal, and we get
transitioned on.

Speaker 10 (06:31):
So yeah, we need to be better on both boxes
of the pitch, as simple as that.

Speaker 9 (06:35):
Samely, even up until were the first goal, do you
think that changed the mood and the mintum of the game?

Speaker 4 (06:39):
Coventry on top of course, after.

Speaker 10 (06:40):
That, yeah, I thought the first goal natural changes it
because obviously we've made an error and then they've capitalized.
I thought at that point, I think, apart fro the
long throws, maybe a couple of set plays, they didn't
really have a lot in the game. I can't really
remember Steven doing much before that, so that that was
really frustrating because I didn't think that that was merited
at that point. Like you say, I thought we got
to there in half time. I thought the games relatively even.

(07:02):
I thought we had some good opportunities. What the ball
really well? We missed a few chances going that way,
we could have equalized, and then the next minute they
got the pitch and score a second goal.

Speaker 9 (07:10):
It's the final ball with a frustrating thing tonight, because
you said, we got into a lot of good positions,
could have scored a couple of goals even after going
in two three nailed down, but unfortunately just didn't seem
to happen.

Speaker 4 (07:19):
The games decided by goals.

Speaker 10 (07:20):
That I mean, by preventing their stopping goals and make
sure we defend resolutely and also taking opportunities and chances.
And obviously this evening we didn't get the balance right
between trying to play and be creative to score goals
and keeping the back door shut. So that's something that
I obviously need to address. But if what I tried
to score more goals, that's why I thought I had
this playing a little bit more. But we want clinical

(07:41):
enough when the chances came along. I mean, so it's
as simple as that. The game is decided, and the game,
the game football is always decided. You can play, you
can play really well, you can play really pull the
in between both boxes, but when chances come along with
your clinical you can win games. If you're not clinical
and then you get cheap goals away, you're always going
to find it tough.

Speaker 3 (07:57):
Well, yeah, we found it to half and mess, sure,
and many fans evacuated the then ahead of full time.
But for me, I think we had that dodgy goal
that they picked up to start with, and somehow heads
went down and hearts weren't in it.

Speaker 8 (08:18):
Dean, what did you think we really got to speak
about it?

Speaker 6 (08:24):
It was actually a mare for us.

Speaker 8 (08:26):
As you said, I think after the second goal the
heads went down, we weren't in it at all. Then
we conceded two more sloppy goals and I'm not really
sure what happened, but it was definitely a night to forget.

Speaker 3 (08:39):
Yeah, it was. It was absolutely a night to forget.
How about you, Jeff.

Speaker 7 (08:45):
Well, I think this afternoon's result for Coventry puts that
one for us a bit into aspects. If they won
five mil today, they only beat us four mill, so
they obviously are the form team in the division at
the moment. But I watched the highlights, you know, the
fifteen minute highlight package of that game, and we weren't

(09:05):
as bad as a four nill score line shows up.
Until the slight error that you've described. It was a
catastrophic error for their first goal. And up until then,
I will say you could say we were on top.
They didn't have one quite good chance when they scraped
the post, remember, yes, but otherwise we were creating half chances,

(09:28):
but we weren't getting into position to finish them.

Speaker 3 (09:31):
We weren't finishing and that was one of the biggest
problems going with that, Stane.

Speaker 6 (09:35):
What did you take on that, Well, the thing I
took from it was that the next perform was had
to be a lot bad, and that one was. I mean,
you know, I agree with everyone concerned. I mean, it
was a disaster. I mean we got beat and at
the end of the day we have to say deservedly.
So I mean that's you know, that's the honest truth

(09:58):
in my view, and you know, and we had to
put that right today and we did. But you know,
it was a catastrophic performance. I mean, and when I
see that, I think it was the third goal when
the ball was rolling along the bar. Why the goalkeeper
didn't just knock it over, I mean, I don't know,
but he was just standing looking at it.

Speaker 3 (10:16):
Well, he must have been ball struck. That's all I
can you make mate? Okay, but it all chased the
day and then the crowd that we're rocking and that
famous bit of music played at the end.

Speaker 4 (10:30):
Four nil.

Speaker 3 (10:31):
We haven't done that for a while. Three nil was it?
I made a mistake. I was watching for the fourth goal.

Speaker 5 (10:40):
I think we all were.

Speaker 3 (10:41):
Yeah, it was three nil. I just wanted us to
equalize what we lost.

Speaker 5 (10:47):
You were just saying if I was awake, Yes.

Speaker 3 (10:49):
I was testing. Yeah, when did you reckon? Who was
your man and the match?

Speaker 4 (10:53):
D uh?

Speaker 11 (10:55):
Oh?

Speaker 8 (10:55):
There was quite a few. But I think if I
had to pick one, just purely for his work rate,
it would have been Billy Mitchell in the Midfield's mill
through and through and he just doesn't stop.

Speaker 4 (11:05):
I mean he'd run through a brick wall for you.

Speaker 8 (11:07):
But there was I mean, Zach Sturge got the Sponsors
Man of the Match fully deserved.

Speaker 3 (11:13):
Disease could have got it for his goal, but it was.

Speaker 8 (11:16):
It was just a great all round performance today and
we needed that after the Coventry game.

Speaker 3 (11:20):
And what about Cooper's goal stand? It wasn't a house standing?

Speaker 5 (11:25):
Well yeah, I mean, to be fair, I mean there
were eight.

Speaker 6 (11:29):
Many goals at Cooper scores are a lot of good
goals and I thought today one was was you know,
it was okay, well yeah, I mean this, don't get
too carried away, but no, I mean the performance actually
better and it was than you know then it was
the other night. The only the only thing is for me,

(11:52):
the my man in the match. And I accept with
dances about Billy Michell. We had a good game, but
they all did. But after the other guy in midfield
should have been the man in the bats. See I
can't prounce his name the Australia long ago. Yeah, I
thought he was just outstanding. He just did He just
did everything right, and he did everything that was simple.

Speaker 4 (12:12):
We never made it complicated.

Speaker 5 (12:14):
And I thought he was outstanding.

Speaker 3 (12:17):
He outstood the player that always concerns me when we
play West brom And let's Jason Malumbe who sits in
a similar position. He's certainly out done in How about you, Jeff,
what would your man of the match be?

Speaker 7 (12:33):
Well, it was easy to pick one for today that
it would have been for the contrary game. That would
have been quite hard to find a man on the
match that day. But today, if you go on the
first hour. I'd have to agree with Dean. I thought
Billy was superb today, absolutely superb. We are beginning to
see the injury crisis unravel. That was a strong team

(12:55):
we had today and there's still one or two players
that aren't quite back up to one hundred. Billy hadn't
played for quite some time until the other day. There's
one or two others in the same position. But it
was impossible for me to pick a man of the match.
I thought one to sixteen. Everybody did really well today

(13:16):
and what was obvious to me was that they had decided.

Speaker 5 (13:20):
They owed the crowd and each other.

Speaker 7 (13:23):
A complete change from the feeling that we left the
ground with on Wednesday night. They were at it from
the first minute. Weren't they great performance?

Speaker 3 (13:33):
Yeah, it was a great performance and long may that
come and tonight, Jeff, you have won the Diplomatic Award
for that response. Thank you very much. Well, before we
pop on to the next peace, I've got a little
shout out to John Scott, who follows us on podcast
and follows us on Maritime Radio. John, you've had a

(13:55):
torrid week and you've had a serious diagnosis. As you'll know,
you're dealing with ever so well. So we're all here
and thinking of you carry on mate, You'll be okay,
I'm sure an yeah, let's hear from Ki Bennett who
brings us the results from the Millwall Community trusts Millwall Lionesses,

(14:17):
Romans and Pride.

Speaker 11 (14:20):
Mill Liesses started the month with a four to three
defeat against Talking Wanders in which was a really really
tight match. Their next match was against Startford which ended
in unfortunately a five mi defeat, but they bounced back
to Big gleebe six nil. Their game against Absolutely United
was postponed last weekend and their first match in October
is a trip to Ashford United in the next.

Speaker 3 (14:40):
Round of the Cup.

Speaker 11 (14:41):
Millwill Romans started their season with a seven to three
victory over Titans two Brewers last weekend. Milwill Pride have
had a really positive start to the season, beating Stonewall
four nil on the opening day before beating Titans two
Brewers six nil last time out.

Speaker 3 (17:00):
I'm England, Barklaan with me are our fantastic panel members
Stan Godwin, Dean Wilson and Jeff Burnage. Well, we welcome
an absolute Millwill favorite. He spent eight outstanding seasons at
the Den and still holds the record for the most
appearances as a goalkeeper, a record that's never been beaten

(17:24):
in the club's one hundred and forty year history. He
was also the first mill Plan to be selected for
England since Red Smith. You remember him, Jeff, don't you
in nineteen thirty eight. He remains a passionate supporter of
the club and is often seen at the Den vigorously
supporting the Mill Community Trust events and cheering on the liars. Well, Hello,

(17:49):
Brian King, Brian, lovely to hear you, and well I'm
going to hand you over to Stan, Who's got a
question for you.

Speaker 6 (18:03):
Yeah, Brian, I trust your role mate.

Speaker 4 (18:07):
You played for Coventry.

Speaker 6 (18:08):
Did you receive any feedback from former colleagues about Wednesday's
game and what were your faults on it?

Speaker 16 (18:17):
Well?

Speaker 17 (18:17):
I do.

Speaker 4 (18:17):
Actually a fellow called Mike Young, who is the media
officer for the Former Players Association of Coventry. He was
at the game and his message to me was he
thought he recovered slick teams. It looks as though there
were going to be a few goals either way, and
he thought Coventry were flattered by the result. I've seen

(18:41):
highlights of the game, and I haven't seen the full game,
but seeing the changes that we had and the mistage
that we made, if you don't score your chances, you're
in trouble, and if you're going to give goals away
like we did on Wednesday night, you're even in more trouble.
So before was a bit of a shot result for me,
that's for sure.

Speaker 5 (19:04):
Brian. It's Jeff Bernarde here. I trust you. Well, how
are you we do good?

Speaker 7 (19:11):
I featured on our podcast last week and discussed how
you and I enjoyed our visit to the normal community.
Trust free holiday activity and food camp program during the
summer vacation, which is specifically for children eligible for free
school meals. We even sampled the fantastic food between you

(19:33):
and me. I actually took one of the lunches away
home with me, all prepared for by some lovely volunteers.
What food stood out for you?

Speaker 4 (19:44):
Well, the food was okay, but didn't exactly staying there
for me. I'm still trying to work out, Jeff, were
you stuck one of them, one of them's Chilver boxes
up because I've ever seen in your car You're ready
on the way.

Speaker 5 (19:55):
To the car, or no, it was in this square rocket.

Speaker 4 (20:00):
Tell you what you've done? Well, we'll get it into
the drowds. Is that? But anyway, we enjoyed the day
and just see so many kids and here that Millwall
is supplying lunches and coaching facilities and matches for six
thousand children during the during the summer period is quite remarkable.

(20:21):
I must have. I was very impressed with the way
the coaches worked, the way the kids listened to them
and worked and as you said, the we were lucky
enough to be invited to stay for lunch. And if
the kids are getting there every day during the school holidays.
Then it can only be possible for the children and
the families and for Millwall and the Millwall Trust. Wonderful

(20:44):
level by everybody.

Speaker 3 (20:46):
Well, that's fantastic, fantastic. I'm going to hand you over
to Dean. Now, Dean and Brian can give you mate.

Speaker 4 (20:55):
Do you know who's that.

Speaker 18 (20:57):
Then, don't I've I've just got to share a story
about you that a few people might know already.

Speaker 8 (21:07):
It was when I was a young lad on the
terraces that are then I was seven years old, so
it was in nineteen seventy two, and obviously you were
my hero. I always wanted to be a goalkeeper, and
I used to go to the games with my dad,
who was a publican, and all these regulars, and I'd
get passed down to the front at the dog track end.

Speaker 4 (21:27):
And just watch you warm up.

Speaker 8 (21:28):
And there was one particular match, which I'm sure you remember,
where you picked me up out of the crowd, took
me onto the pitch and had me taking penalties against you,
much to the delight of the crowd. And whenever I
see you now, we still reminisce about that story. But
I actually think you got in trouble over that didn't you?

Speaker 4 (21:49):
Well, I did, but I think the worst thing was
that you actually scored two goals that day, which didn't
go too well in my walmup program, remembering that that
oh warm up was about six or seven minutes. We
never used to go out twenty five minutes before and
then spend another twenty minutes on the pitch. But when
we come out the opposition, I took over the cold

(22:11):
blow alone and which was not a good move for them.
So I had to go all the way down to
the Elton Road then to warm up. And I saw
this chirmy little face peering over the fence now, and
I thought, well, I've seen him about before. I'm sure
he's always down in front and he's dead or whatever.
So you look very eager. I left you jo over

(22:32):
the fence. You come out, you knocked a couple of
balls in so me with Gordon Bolland, as I said,
you scored a couple of goals. And after the game,
or well at half time, actually Commander Dove West I
think his name was, ed of the police down there,
said to me, Brian, you can't do that again. Made
I'm sorry, I said, Well, there's no problem. He said, no,

(22:52):
just listen. If you've let him come on, and all
of a sudden we got another ten thousand who want
to come in. We're going to be in scrubble and
so are you. So let's just say that's the first thing.
The last time I believe.

Speaker 8 (23:04):
It was Yeah, that was nineteen seventy two, and that's
what made me want to go on and become a goalkeeper.
And is great memories and what a great player and
person that you are. And what did you make of
the results against West Brom today?

Speaker 4 (23:21):
Well, a total turn around by this hand of it.
And I've just seen the goals actually, and well the
second one as easy as goal. That must be the
goal of the season, and it or certainly in the
running for it. We've got a great strike. We looked
a totally different outfit today. Maybe West Brom managements proveltry,

(23:42):
but still you've got to beat them, and we looked
a class above West problem today. And as I've heard
you also that we've still got injuries, injury problems within
the side. But one of the players I've enjoyed to
see last season and the season before was a young

(24:03):
lad called Billy Mitchell, who I seem to refer to
him as a posh Terry Urlock, and I think he is.
He works so just like her Luck did, and he
puts himself about and he's Melwoll thrown through with any
shadow of doubt and well deserved three points to go.
Well done the lines and well done Alix Snail and

(24:26):
the team.

Speaker 18 (24:26):
Yeah no, I agree that that that second goal from
where he cut inside and just let fly out, I
think would be arfuls to find that a goal like
that this season. But speaking about who could be man
of the match, but overall, who was your man of
the match today?

Speaker 4 (24:43):
Well, I never saw the whole going, so I'm not
going to be I'm not going to be put on
the spot about that. But according to you lads, the
boys who scored the goal and the players who worked
the hardest seem to come in the running for that,
And good luck to him. And let's give us a
few more results at home like that.

Speaker 3 (25:03):
Yeah, definitely.

Speaker 19 (25:04):
I mean we needed a result after the game against
Coventry and I think the boys delivered today.

Speaker 3 (25:08):
So yeah, well you joined Jeff as well a professional
diplomat there, Brian, But I don't hold that against you,
and I don't hold it against Jeff. But what I
have Brian, is there's an interesting aspect of the game
that's developing as we speak, really, and what it is

(25:31):
is that there's a drive to create an expanded role
for goalkeepers and they're going to be called a goal player.
What are your thoughts on that.

Speaker 4 (25:42):
I actually know the bloat that's come up with this
so called idea. Friends, his name is is a Dutchman
supposedly in former goalkeeper. I'll tell you what in short
and Eddie Elkinson. But we've always been goal player. As
a goalkeeper. You can throw it, you can kick it.

(26:04):
You must be had a very kicking, you must be
had a very ear throwing, your distribution and your awareness
at the back. You know, for the last ten years
goalkeepers or fifteen years have been classed as sweepers because
teams have been pushing up. But goalkeepers we can use
o rands, we can throw it, we can kick it.

(26:26):
We have a great variation of the way we deliver
the ball and the way we passed the ball. And
for me, a goalkeeper is a goalkeeper, and that's how
it should refer. Listen, a goal player is somebody who's
going to try and make somebody a bit more money
and a eneaving it. I am not having that idea
at all, So good luck to him. I hope it

(26:47):
backfires and him and his goal players all fall over
themselves because this goalkeeper is always going to be a goalkeeper,
and new goalkeepers out there concentrate on the job in hand,
learn to catch it for a start.

Speaker 3 (27:01):
It'd be good if they did catch it. It make a
big difference to perhaps our goal average. I should think.
I've talked head coaches. That's what we'll do, Brian. That's
what we'll do now, Brian. There's there's a couple of
bits that I really want to touch base with you on.
There was a big thank you from the Community Trust

(27:22):
for sponsoring the Maritime Radio advert at Saint Paul's Sports Ground,
and that's that's very noble of you, and it says
that you are there and you did do it, and
I seem to recollect you. It was Jeff with you
when you signed the advert.

Speaker 4 (27:41):
He certainly was present at the at the ground. But yeah,
I was asked to sign that play card and or advertisement,
which I've done. And I think there's a couple of
pictures taken, you know, going night to thank Jeff because
picked me up and brought me there. I didn't know

(28:01):
what to expect him. I don't know whether he did,
but we certainly had a very good day and we
were well looked after.

Speaker 3 (28:09):
Yeah, well they are excellent and the team at the
Middle Community Trust do great work down at Saint Paul's
and back at the Lions Center as well. And there's
there's another person that wants to sort of say thank
you as well, and that's Abbie Barbaric. You've sponsored her
shirt the goalkeeper for the middle all line.

Speaker 4 (28:30):
This is I believe I did. I can't say I've
actually seen a play, but on your advice and the
Community Trust, they asked me to sponsor their ladies' rol
Creeper and that's what I've done. Well, I can only
be sure. All the best, really well, when.

Speaker 3 (28:53):
You when you're down, Brian, when you're down. Next time,
we'll have to get you to meet Abby and I'll
have a photo shoot, I think, and that will promote
the sponsorship for the Lionesses. It will make a really
big difference. So I think, well it'd be extremely useful.

(29:14):
What do you do over again? Brian, do you know.

Speaker 4 (29:17):
I'm looking to come over early November actually or sometimes
in November. Yeah, you know, taking a home match and
going pay the community trust to visit and see if
there's anything we can do there for the community. And
I hope I'm going to be able to take in
a game and hopefully we can get result of already today.

Speaker 3 (29:41):
It would be brilliant, absolutely brilliant. Anyone got any other
points they'd like to ask Brian?

Speaker 7 (29:48):
Well, I'd just like to remind everybody that Brian was
one of the first people that became a Forever Iron,
a member of the Former Players Association, which the club
of named Forever Lions.

Speaker 5 (30:02):
Is that right about the Forever Lions club right?

Speaker 3 (30:06):
Then?

Speaker 7 (30:06):
Well that was well deserved. But Brian, it's always good
to speak to you. It's lovely to hear someone still
got a good, great love for the for the club,
even though it's I'm going to embarrass you. I think
it's fifty years since your last appearance for the club.
So what were your recollections on your very very final appearance.

Speaker 4 (30:29):
I think Bristol Rivers are they at the at the
Old Den. It was not a nice way to lead
because we finished third from Bartman we got. I was
going into the next season thinking I was going to
be playing in the second Division or the third Division
as it was then. And during that summer period I've
done all the pre season with Millwall and I went

(30:52):
away to Tunisia with Milwalk to playing a tournament and
we came back and well, as I said the rest
of history, I went to Conventary. It should have gone
to Ipswich, but I played in the First Division and
that's what I've always wanted to do in my lifetime.
Not as many matches as probably I should have played

(31:12):
in it, but injury. Injury brought a sudden into my
career and that's some of the things that are happening
in football. Unfortunately it happened to me. But I was
lucky that I'd done on my coaching burgers and stuff,
and opportunities opened up not only as a goalkeeper coach
but also as a manager, and I took that opportunity

(31:35):
in Scandinavia. And then to be honored like I was
with d LS Briley, who are gaining as a player
who has been the only player ever to lift the
championship trophy and gain promotion to the then First Division.
It was a big honor for me, and I know
it was for Les and also prou Buckley, the Ladies'

(32:02):
choice for the Forever Lion's club. So no, we thoroughly
enjoyed it, and we well, I say we thoroughly enjoy it.
There are a few hiccups on the way, but we
hope we're going to get all that sorted sometime in
the future. But it'll be great to be number one

(32:24):
and number two like me and Les were, and prove
also the number three and the people that are going
to follow us are all people that and players that
have put a lot of effort and time into representing
this wonderful football club. And I'm just proud to be
one of them.

Speaker 3 (32:42):
Yeah, you definitely are glad to be one of them.
And there's more to come, and hopefully when you come
over in November, you might be able to be there
as hosts to those that are being inducted in November,
and we really look forward to you and Liz do
it that that would be brilliant.

Speaker 4 (33:02):
Yeah, I look forward to that.

Speaker 3 (33:04):
Okay, Brian, I'm going to say to you now thanks
for joining us. All the best to you and care
and absolutely look forward to seeing you in November. Keep
it safe on the streets out there and we'll see
you soon.

Speaker 4 (33:22):
Thanks Brian, Thanks very much, Omen, and thanks very much
Dan Stan and Jeff.

Speaker 5 (33:31):
Thank you Brian, thank you pleasure.

Speaker 3 (33:35):
Okay, so I'm just going to take us back before
we drop into the time for our ads and just
speak about briefly what we heard from Kaile. Tomorrow. Of course,
the mill Lionesses are playing at Ashford and Ted Jones
is going to talk about that a little bit later on,

(33:57):
but they've had a bit of a topsy two season
so far. Any views on that, Jeff.

Speaker 7 (34:06):
Yes, I think it's a period of transition team wise.
And the game tomorrow against Ashford Town that's Ashford Middlesex
over by Heathrow, not Ashford in Kent. Don't go there
by a mistake. But we played them on the first
game of the season back in August, and in women's football,

(34:31):
August is a funny month, a lot of people on holiday.
At our level, the game is still at the best
semi pro but basically amateur. So we're playing them again
after a three to three draw at their stadium, so
hope for the best because if we get through this,
we'll be in the next qualifying round in the Women's

(34:51):
FA Cup, the trophy that we proudly won in nineteen
ninety one and nineteen ninety seven.

Speaker 5 (34:58):
Let's hope we can do it again.

Speaker 3 (35:00):
Let's hope we can do it again one day and
fingers crossed. Stan. The Romans and Pride have had some
really resounding results against their competition in their league. What
do you think about the Romans and Pride?

Speaker 6 (35:18):
Well, I mean, I've said before on more than one occasion,
I mean, they're just.

Speaker 5 (35:25):
They're remarkable.

Speaker 6 (35:26):
I mean, ever since they've been formed, they've just gone
from one triumph to the other. As I've said before,
I have never known two teams with that sort of
I mean, it's just been one thing after another and
it I mean, if somebody told me there's a crisis looming,
I think we said on some sort of wind up,

(35:48):
But no, I mean, I mean you run out of
things to say about because it's just continued success.

Speaker 3 (35:55):
In it is success upon success and they have been
doing exceedingly well and we can't doubt that. And I've
got to say that Paul Loading does a great job
as a general manager of those two sides, and there's
a potential for another side coming along there. There's so

(36:16):
many people interested in joining those sides that they really
are in a place where they'll be overwhelmed by the
talent that comes and season.

Speaker 6 (36:32):
Well, I can I just say to that, because I mean,
if they're thinking about doing a third team, I mean
I'm interested to know, because I remember when it was
mentioned last season, Paul did say, well, they've got to
look at the mechanics of it all.

Speaker 5 (36:46):
But it's good news.

Speaker 3 (36:48):
It is true. Thanks Sam.

Speaker 3 (39:35):
Thanks Bethany, I'm Aim and Barclay and with me are
fantastic panel of Stank Godwin, Dean Wilson and Jeff Burnage.
You've already heard a little bit about the incredible work
of the Mill Community Trust and the positive impact it
has on the communities it serves, and that includes former players,

(39:55):
and we'll hear a little bit about that now.

Speaker 16 (39:59):
Robinson for Maritime Radio from Millwall's Den on a very
special day, so special that the first three players are
being inducted as Forever Lions, a type of former players Association.
This is the first time in the club's one hundred
and forty year history the Millwall Football Club and the
Milwall Community Trust have had such an organization that recognizes

(40:21):
both men and women who have played for Millwall. Firstly,
I will speak with the most senior former player, who
spent eight outstanding seasons at the Den and still holds
the record for the most appearances as a goalkeeper, a
record that has never been beaten in the clubs one
hundred and forty year history. He was also the first

(40:41):
Millwall player to be selected for England since Red Smith
in nineteen thirty eight. He remains a passionate supporter of
the club and is often seen at the Den vigorously
supporting Trust events and cheering on the Lions. Is also
an idol of mine. It's Brian King. You must be
delighted to be inducted into the Forever Lions Club.

Speaker 4 (41:03):
Yes, I am delighted to be one of the first
three to be inducted into the Forever Lions Club. It
really is an honor for us players who have represented
Millwall and I can only say on behalf of Prue
and Les that we are very honored to receive this
award from this great club.

Speaker 16 (41:25):
Thanks Brian and congratulations, an award that is well deserved.
Our second recipient is the sole team captain of Millwall
Football Club to lead the Lions to the top flight.
He was a talented and ambitious midfielder who joined the
club while we were scouting another player. He quickly became
a passionate Lion. He's famously quoted as saying, when I

(41:47):
came to Millwall, I realized everywhere else had just been
a job. Since then, he has been a dedicated part
of the club, actively participating in Trust events and taking
on roles with our had Millwall Lionesses and that's Day
hosting Les Briley, what's an accolade?

Speaker 3 (42:06):
To join the Forever Lions Club.

Speaker 22 (42:08):
Been an honor and a pleasure to have played a
big part in this great club's history. Sean Day, the
CEO of the Community Trust, has set up the Forever
Lions Club. Brian King, myself and Prue Buckley have the

(42:29):
honor of being the first three members. We are looking
forward to working with Sean and his lovely staff.

Speaker 5 (42:40):
Thank you congratulations Les.

Speaker 16 (42:43):
You are the man who let us road in the
top flight and are most worthy of this recognition and
let's celebrate a remarkable woman from mill A Lionesses early
days in women's football, who also represented England's senior team
and recognized as one of the national team's legacy players.
In nineteen ninety seven, she won the FA Women's Cup

(43:04):
with Millwall, one of three major trophies that season, including
the Kent Cup and the League Cup. She made over
five hundred appearances, even serving as a player manager. Now
she is the head of match day ticketing at Millwall,
Prue Buckley. Even though she can't be with us right now,
I can still vividly picture her rold in the FA
Cup and the pride she brought to us all. Today

(43:27):
she reaches another prayer milestone as one of the first
Free Lions and Lionesses to be inducted in the Forever
Lions Cup. Congratulations prew on this truly special achievement.

Speaker 3 (43:39):
Well done, Dean. You have a responsibility in dealing with
the players or the former players that come along and
are uninducted. You have hosted them. In fact, can you
tell us what happens? Yes, certainly.

Speaker 19 (43:55):
Once the committee, the Forever Lions Committee, decided who's going
to be inducted. They're invited to come in and they
can bring a couple of guests with them, maybe family.
I'll meet them on match day. We'll go into the
line center and they do a quick interview with yourself, amen,
and then the club kindly lay on a table for

(44:16):
us in the dumb Leaven restaurant and they treated to
a meal, all expenses paid day out. Obviously they have
to work for their supper because they talk to the
fans that are in there and sign autographs and talk
about the old days and when they were playing, and
what we've been doing recently is taking them down a
halftime onto the pitch and they're given a exclusive Forever

(44:41):
Lions Club tie and a certificate detailing all their appearances
in the dates that they play.

Speaker 3 (44:48):
And they're introduced to the fans. And I think the
fans love it. Mell.

Speaker 19 (44:53):
Whether you're a fan of supporter, you're part of the
mill Will family and this just brings the players back
and then that they are part of the all family.
As I say, the fans love it too.

Speaker 5 (45:04):
It is.

Speaker 3 (45:05):
It's great stuff. And we'll see some more being inducted
at the Stoke game this month, and I look forward
to that. So tomorrow at too VM Middle Line, it's
his face ashd Town in the third qualifying round of
the Women's FA Cup. It's not kent And, as Jeff
pointed out, but Middlesex. In fact, it's in Surrey at

(45:29):
the Robert Parker Stadium. Short lane Stanwell. Ted Jones provides
an update.

Speaker 23 (45:37):
Yeah, we're really looking forward to the Ashtle game. And
unfortunately I was still on holiday at the start of season,
so I missed that game. But yeah, you know, it
was really good that we came back last time out
against him. You know, it's quing to two goals and
added time to get a point, but we definitely felt,
you know, we could have gone on and won that
game beforehand. So yeah, you're looking, you know, to have
a good run, you know, to get into the next round.

(45:59):
This massive for us in terms of we want to
test ourselves against the best teams and you know it would
be a good opportunity to hopefully take play against some
other sides if we'd be a on Sunday. So yeah,
really looking forward to a really important game for us.
So yeah, the girls are up for it. We've worked
hard than training this week, so hopefully a good result
and go into the hat.

Speaker 3 (46:19):
Let's be hopeful. And what are your thoughts about the
season so far.

Speaker 23 (46:23):
I think we're honest. I think we're in a real
difficult phase of the season so far. You know, I
think pre season was excellent. You know, we felt the
recruitment was good. Obviously we've got a lot of young players,
you know, we've joined and they're still learning. But yeah,
I think it's frustrating at times. I definitely think, you know,
on another day, you know, a bar and a dart
for the game, and I think there was a good

(46:44):
argument that we could have gone and won those first
sort of four or five games, and I think we'd
be in a completely different position to where we are now.
So I think it's small margins. We're just missing out.
And we had a really good week at training this week.
You know, we was able to look back at some
of our games, you know, highlight things where the girls
have done really well, you know, some things which we
can improve on. So we've definitely got the squad, we've

(47:05):
got the ability.

Speaker 4 (47:05):
I think it's just about getting that belief.

Speaker 23 (47:07):
I think, you know, if we can put a run
of you know, we get two, three, four or five
wins in a row. I think all of a sudden,
the confidence will be flying throughout the squad and we're
in a completely different position. So yeah, I definitely say
it's been frustrated at times, you know, but I can't
foll the girls for they're hard work.

Speaker 17 (47:22):
You know.

Speaker 23 (47:23):
They've been honest with us as well, and we've had
quite open conversations and areas and ways which we can improve.
So yeah, I'm hoping obviously we want to pick up
some more results and more points and a few better performances,
but I think we're getting there. As I said, we've
got a young squad, they're still learning, so yeah, we're
hopefully going to have a good result, so more importantly

(47:43):
a good performance and Sunday get the get the win
against Ashford and then hopefully we can build off of that.

Speaker 3 (47:49):
A braind new pitch at and Paul says that working
out for here.

Speaker 23 (47:53):
I think we're quite fortunate, I'd say arguably the best
or one of the best facilities which we've got in
the league. So it definitely makes a difference, you know,
to train and not only for ourselves but the academy
players turning up and training on the facility we can
be out, you know, is really important and it only
helps their development. So we didn't have a great record
at home last year, so I'm hoping new pitch we
can pick up on that and yeah, make it a

(48:15):
real fortress for teams to come and play against us.

Speaker 3 (48:17):
Thanks Ted and all the best. Well, yeah, thanks Ted
and all the best and come a new lion Less
is get roaring and scoring and be in the next round. Jeff,
your thoughts on tomorrow's you touched on it earlier on
what do you think anything more? Is it reflected on

(48:40):
what Ted has said?

Speaker 7 (48:41):
Well, I think this is the final qualifying reality, it's
the first round proper next time if we managed to
get through, Ted I think sounds very confident they will
get through. But it is away from home and we're
going to only draw there in the league earlier in August,
as he referred to. So we'll wait and see. I

(49:03):
hope to be at the game myself and it will
be an achievement if we can go on a decent
cup run in the Women's FA Cup. The draw for
the next round if we are successful, will be on Monday,
and it'll be intriguing to see if we do get
through who we play against next.

Speaker 3 (49:25):
Yeah, thanks for that. Now, the only game I'm going
to touch on is when we return to the big
game as we got the old games for the Internationals.
Is on the eighteenth of October. We're off to Queens
Park Rangers to face well for us to face them,

(49:46):
and it's a special event because we're going to commemorate
Gordon Jago. Now I know that Jeff is going to
produce something ahead of that based on what we produced
earlier on in the year when he pasted away, so
you're likely to hear that before that game. But whatever happens,
it's a twelve thirty kickoff and we'll go and enjoy

(50:10):
ourselves at Loftus Road. So want to watch the Lions.
Tickets are available on the Millware See website or at
the Den ticket office. Check the website for details. The
Dennis situated near South Bermasey Station, a four minute transfer
from the London Bridge Major Interchange station. Lastly, we will

(50:31):
return on Saturday November with our monthly mil News Reviews show.
Thanks to our panelists, Dean, thanks Saman thanks for having me.
You all welcome. We'll see you again. Stand Yeah.

Speaker 4 (50:44):
Thanks Haman Yeah.

Speaker 5 (50:45):
And Jeff Yeah, thanks everybody, and our.

Speaker 3 (50:48):
Producer Gary, You're welcome. Thank you Gary. And I'm sorry
for the little blips that we had there. We won't
do that again, I promise you. I'll press the button anyway.
Thank you for listening. Bye for now.
