(00:54):
hi, Bethanie Warren here and you'vejoined us for the weekly our Melwll Fan
show with the mill No One LikesUs Talking Team, which is broadcast every
Friday evening. Enjoy one win togo. We're in the playoffs. It's
as simple as that. I'm yourhost, Gary Staff and with me either
No One Likes Us Talking Team orPhil Coleman, Dave Hart and Ted Robinson.

(01:21):
Not everybody likes them, but theydon't care. Evening Phil evening everyone
evening Dave and evening Ted even goeven every one evening. So right,
it is one win and we areone away from the playoffs and scary squeaky

(01:45):
bum time. I'll go to youPhil talk to us about black Belt Blackpool
first before always talking about Blackburn.Yeah, evening everyone, even every gager
must win when you're playing professional football. But that Blackball game was a proverbial
must win game. And for mewatching it on the TV, the crowd
that traveled up their fair play tothem. They got right behind the team.

(02:07):
But Gary row has changed things up. He's freshened it up, he's
changed the formation, and what wasimpressing for me was there was a real
attacking intent and it paid off.Don't get wrong team slot Blackpool. They
have their periods in the game wherethey pushed more players forward and they tried
to overload and they pin your backand Blackpool did that for a bit of

(02:28):
a period. But again Gary Rowldealt with it. He put subs on,
he changed the formation and saw thegame out. So people question his
tactics, but he brought what moreon and for me made a heck of
a difference with absolute quality and Ilove seeing him with ben It back in
the side and Leonard again in action. All three of those are absolutely quality
players and I was impressing with stylesand shackled and so the shake up change

(02:53):
the formation brave because most managers stickto what they believe, they stick to
the formations, they stick the playersthat were in form But I think he
got it right and he may wellhave for the Shagan Blackpool by doing it
and they couldn't respond. But whenthey did, as I say, Gary
rowit changed it and made sure hesaw the game out. Um. Fans
asked for goals and there, andthey want some expensive strikers, but you

(03:17):
need players like walk more than Flemingand bennet Win is fit to provide the
ammunition their service. And it's provenif if you give Bradshaw that service at
Eaton score, I mean to befair, The passes and the way they
created was just brilliant and it's nodifferent back in my time. You know
Kevin O'Callaghan and Jimmy Carter, GeorgeLawrence, David Byrne, they got the

(03:38):
service in for players like Cass andTeddy, and I'm sure Neil Harrison,
Neil Harris and Morrison. They providedyou know, they were provided by great
players and it was no different ifyou give Bradshaw and a service, particularly
the pass from more Vagable score. But Q loss to Gary Rowitt for the
changes and it paid off and ittakes one to the next must win game.

(04:04):
Brilliant, Phil Dave. What areyour thoughts about Blackpool? I know
you was up there, mate,Yeah, I mean it feels more left
something all up. But it wasreally refreshing to see us go go for
the game right from the off.I mean, you know, we looked
like we were going to score wheneverwe went forward. Us we missed some
sitters, I've got to be honest, but um, when they when they

(04:27):
got that, well, to meit was a dodgy benewito. But it's
one of those things. I wasright in front of us. Um,
they got their tails up and weneeded half time and after time when half
time came, obviously Garry done theright thing when after time spoke to him
and told him what he wanted. They came out a second half and we
took the lead again and they gota worldy of an equalizer, which surprised

(04:54):
people were saying that Long should havegone it well from where we were down
the other end the pitch. It'snot to say, but um, we've
got a penalty that was deserved andthat was it finished tactic spot on what
more? Player of the match?I couldn't you disagree? And Ted,
I'm not going to ask at Blackpoolback Blackpool, I'm going to ask you
about your nerves. But you've alreadytold me you haven't got any now well

(05:17):
a lot of lost them years agofor supporting me. All you don't you
can't have nerves yet. It's mea're more concerned about the way that these
games are going to be quite honest. But I've got to be honest.
Help from the you know, forthe first time we've done a show this
season. I've always said that Ifelt that the squad was stronger this year
than it was last year. Andin theory, theory is with that you

(05:40):
should do better, and we haddone better, only slightly but better the
last game. So you know,we've we've managed to get to where we
wanted to get to and I meanBlackpool was a must win and feel somebody
out perfectly the change in the formationthink to spark everyone, but what's given

(06:01):
me confidence girls players that we've broughtin, like even Burke. The last
own game against Preston was probably Burke'sbest game. What more has come in
and shown why we bought him, because the guy is a player and he
hasn't shown that really up until now. But thankfully he turned up the black
ball and did it there. Sonerves, you've got to embrace this sort

(06:26):
of thing. I'd rather be inthe position that we're in going for a
promotion and of a one off gameto get us there, than to be
down at the bottom playing in aone off game to keep us in here.
So I'm thankful to Gary Raut andthe boys for that at least.
But nerves, now, let's embraceit, use the nerves that we all
got and get, you know, for a bit of passion and a bit

(06:48):
of momentum into it. You turnthem nerves into a positive thing, and
let's all get behind this lot onon Monday and make sure that we are
the twelfth man there and raw ramon. Basically, don't worry about nerves.
Don't start looking over your shoulder, because if we do our job on Monday,
we're there. I can't disagree withany of that was it last Friday.

(07:13):
My nerves were through the roofs.Just asked my son and my wife.
They were very worried about me.But I'm will say one thing which
slightly goes in our favor. Blackpoolpaid Blackburn. I think played on the
Sunday, maybe even the Monday lastweek and we paid on the Friday.
So we've got at least four gamefour days where the lines they went away

(07:35):
at a few days with their familyrecuperated and well both think I come back
in on Wednesday to start work again, which would lovely for Garry out to
do that and just keeping them bangbang bang on the training field. Admittedly
Friday night was a bit of asqueaky bum time for me, but I
did feel every time we went forward, like Dave said, we were going
to score. So thankfully we gotover the line. And on Monday,

(08:01):
before we listen to Debbie Julian's hereis our Paul Owens from FISHERFC talking about
Fisher. Hi. I'm Paul ormill and Fisher if C supporter. There
has always been strong links between ourclubs and such FISHERFC will e every minds

Many thanks to our sponsors gin andMotors of Gravesend and Mepper. Our guest,
this evening is a mill legend. This man was born in Biller Riki

(09:35):
and began his career with mill innineteen eighty five. He played one hundred
and sixty three times the line, scoring zero goals. In the infamous nineteen
eighty seven eighty eighth season, heplayed fifty one times and helped the lines
win promotion to the old First Division. Mill is in his blood and he
can be often seen wandering around theexecutive lounge and even working in there sometimes.
He also played in the same squadas one of our panelists tonight,

(09:56):
Welcome back to the show, BrianHorn. Hello, Hi Brian. How
you doing mate? Yeah, verywell, good evening every one. Hi
you good evening, Brian. Greatto have you back on the show.
Before I pass you over to thesereprobates, I think I think the word
I'm looking for, and I'm sureyou have told this a million times before,

(10:20):
but how did you actually come tobeing part of the line squad back
then nineteen eighty five? Oh,if you want to go back, the
family families and Millwall supporters who usedto live on the ac on the state
in Peckham Um and my dad andgranddad went and saw later Eddie for a
trial. Lucky enough to get atrial and I'm right through the youth system
and in the first team. Iwas was very lucky to be in in

(10:43):
the time that we had some fantasticplayers, great managers and managed to get
to the top flight. Excellent.I'll pass over to Phil someone I think
you know a little bit. Hello, are you doing all right? Yeah?
When used a lot when I toldyou he was on the show.
I thought, we'll just give usthree hours and we'll start every sentence with

(11:05):
do you remember and the crack feelI'm all right, I'm just thinking,
broy it was thirty five years ago, a couple of days ago, up
in the hole. What great times, so so many stories. Yeah,
it was. It was just areally special time feel for us. So

(11:28):
when we was in a squad wherewe knew we weren't going to get beat.
I mean, I know it's easyto say now, but we just
had that togetherness and belief and theDock and Frank had instilled into us.
And and I think that the captainLes and Terrier Lock and all the older
players yourself included in that field whereused to knock out, knock us into

(11:52):
shape if we got out of liningyoung Lands a little bit. But it
was just a time um at Millwallwhere we were confident, we knew we
were going to win, and wemanaged to do that at Hole and a
very very special day, not onlyfor me and all the players I played
with, but for the club BrightThat was a couple of years where I

(12:13):
don't know about you, but Iactually enjoyed turning up for training. I
actually enjoyed playing. It's a greatbunch of lads and everyone handed it out
on the training ground. But there'sa question for you, what was it
like playing behind me? We obviouslyI had to be after decent filter,
get your mistakes, but no,it was everybody we played with, Phil,

(12:41):
your brother included would He Macca,Dannis Salman, Rhino, you know,
all the back line we'd nearly grownup together. You know, you
would come through the youth system,Rhino, Macca would he was brought in
from Redding, you know. AndSean spiram As another one, David Thompson.
Everybody had come through the youth system. So and obviously yourself, who

(13:05):
had been in the first team fora long while. You guide us,
guided us into to where we wantedto play, and ad the boys played
him what you expected from us orfrom me more than anything else. But
we were very lucky at that timeto have a you know, ten good
defenders at the club that if someonegot injured or was out of form,

(13:26):
there was someone else that could comein and have a go theirselves. So
as you said, for it wasa it was a pleasure coming into training
every day and we all had hada giggle and a laugh and the manager
and Frank was very much part ofthat. They let us be men I
suppose, who enjoyed ourselves. Butat the same time we always knew that
whether it was training or a camewe knew when to be serious and knuckled

(13:50):
down and make sure things were right. And our bigger part was Frank when
he came in. He came inin the second year for me and I
remember the day case Steve Woods ribsywith an elbow just to show everybody,
don't let really want to get acrossyou. Frank was he put a little
five or ten percent extra on topof all of this For me, Yeah,
I think obviously it's pedigree, youknow, double winning, first ever

(14:13):
double winning captain for arsenal Um,you know, playing at Queen's Park ranges
with some some fantastic players there aswell. He was a winner field.
When he installed that into all theplayers, I said, look, we
can do it. We can wecan all play together. And at the
same time, you've got to bestrong, tough and not let anyone take

(14:35):
any libbits with you. And thatwas that was as you say, when
when Frank did come in, he'sexperienced and no hour shone through brightly.
I mean, Doc was brilliant manmanagement with every player, but I think
Frank was. Frank was magnificent atmaking sure that everything with everybody. Every
day, everybody was on their game, and come match day he sort of

(14:56):
ruan the dressing room, didn't heOh, absolutely here top man, no
problem. Phil, Hello, BrianDove, Hello, very well, thanks
mate. You're right, yeah, all good, all good. Yeah,
I'm like ted, um, that'sa memorable season, that seven eighty eight

(15:18):
season. What point in the seasondid it actually sort of seek into you?
Then the players that what are wegoing to do it? When we
beat our one nil? As lateas that, I mean, I've already
said, we went on. Wewent on a thirteen game unbeaten run.

(15:39):
Phil, I don't know if youremember that. We went to Lanza Ratti.
Yeah, and it was supposed tobe a dry camp. Who was
supposed to go out there a bitof warm weather training which was unheard of
at the time for Millwall. Andwe went to Lanza Ratty and had a
training camp out there. But theboys used to all an orange juice with

(16:00):
something extra in it, so weall had a bit of fun. But
when we when we come back,I think we got beat by Bradford four
nil and I think that was athome if I'm not mistaken, um.
And then after that we went onthe run where we didn't get beat.
We we something clicked, um,And obviously we knew after the Bournemouth game,

(16:22):
I would say that we was weddingthe hunt um. And then the
last three games after that I believeit was it was I can't remember the
game. I know Blackburn was onelast one. I know we played whole
I can't remember the one before that. But you know, once I think
Leeds was a very important game forus away from home where we won two
one up at Leeds and I thinkthat really yeah, Plymouth. So you

(16:48):
know, as I say to youthat there was there's many games that you
could say, you know, wewere we were flying, but until we
got you know, the win athow it was done and were champion.
So it was, it was,it was amazing. After that game at
Whole Halley, all I've got hisimages of about twelve semi naked players being

(17:10):
carried around the ground all that wastheir pants on and the fans had come
over and just nicked every bit ofthe kit off, every plower you know,
Yeah, it was, it wasjust it was just amazing. I
mean, we stayed up overnight Field, didn't we Yeah? You know you
know that. Do you know thestory with the five of us Field that
went out that shouldn't have done?Yeah, you got done in ye.
The trainer played the next day.So so basically we played, we played

(17:34):
and stock and the chairman said, right, we're staying up overnight, no
one's to go out. So that'sred rag to a ball to me and
it so there's me Ted tan Orrix, God bless his soul, U he
said, I think Woody. Andwe ended up in a nightclub. Um
and it was a nightclub where Hellwas having their presentation. Dude, so
you can imagine us, can't weWe were in the corner having a drink,

(17:56):
having a good fun So we getback into the hotel about our past
two. So Doc is sitting bythe door as we come in and he's
saying, you you you you well. In two o'clock in the afternoon,
he said, you're playing all yourSo Roger said the van was leaving at
seven o'clock in the morning, soit was pointless going to bed. So

(18:19):
we kept on drinking um and wegot the bus at seven. I think
we had a few six stops alongthe way. Shanspire him that was.
And we ended up coming to Chiltonplaying at well and I think we got
beat five one and would he hadthe best game of his life. There's

(18:41):
some little stories that you don't youdon't get to hear about, but um,
that was one. That was onethat was was funny. But the
night you know, the chairman justthere was champagne and you know, it
was an amazing night field when youknow, as you say, you're getting
carried by around the ground by thesupport was nicking the NICKI nick and ended
up walking down a tunnel in inyour pens or wherever they were, and

(19:04):
back into the dressing room. Anotherthing feel I don't know if you remember,
do you remember that their chairman puta greater champagne in their addressing room
before the game has all gone halftime. No, no, but no,
before the game he put the champagneand and Doc made him take it

(19:25):
out. He said, like,we ain't done nothing yet, so he
took it out. The boys werecatted, right, Alcohol and professional football
is a no no these days. But I've got to tell you your train
hard. We played our but boyoh boy, did we have a beer
after and did we socialize? Andthat created one l of a team bond.
So it ain't the end of theworld if players go and have a

(19:47):
bit together after a game or something. But that was special, you know.
Yeah, Phil, I think itstill goes on. Phil. Yeah,
I'm lucky enough still to be inthe business where I take football football
teams away. But at the righttimes, which I must stress we did
it at the right times. Wedidn't drink on a Friday or a Thursday

(20:07):
or anything like that. We mighthave got to choosday off and we would
have a beer on a Tuesday ora Wednesday, But you know, it
was all done together and we allhad a laugh, and you're perfectly correct
for it created a bond between allthe players, all the staff. Um,
you know it was. It wasjust as you say, it galvanized

(20:27):
us and made a real strong bondwith all the players. The ones that
didn't play also as much as whatwe do, but that they were.
They were brilliant, every one ofthem. Yeah. Oh, Brian,
is tedier? Are you doing?Ted? I'm all right, make are
you? Yeah, I'm very well, very well thinking. I'm going to

(20:48):
bring you on the present day matters. Only it was beginning it saying like
an episode from last to the summerwine near you and Phil. I just
want to say, it's easier towin the league, to go up and
get in the playoffs. Yeah.Yeah, well that's brings a bit more
point. Do you think we couldget over the line on the Monday right?
I've said all season I think thisis a stronger squad than we had
last year, and we was closelast year, but it was out of

(21:11):
our ends in the last game. Now it's in our ends direct and we
can do it on Monday. Yeah, of course I do. Yeah,
I think that you're perfectly correcting. The squad being stronger. I think the
only the only area I think we'rea week in is up the top of
the pitch. M You know,I think Brads has carried us and scored

(21:32):
some very important goals in the lastfifteen games for us. But I think
the squad, as you rightly say, is is a lot stronger when everybody's
fit. I think the manager willever a job on his end to pick
pick his strongest side. Um.But yeah, I don't see I see
the boys going out and doing aprofessional job and getting the result that we
need. I mean, let's behonest. You know, it's the closest

(21:56):
we're going to get to the PremierLeague for a number of years, and
the players are up for it,and you know it's and that's not putting
no pressure on them, but youknow, they all want to play in
the Premier League. They all wantto test their sales against the best teams
and the best players in the worldthat play in the Premier League. What
a chance to do it, andto you know, to have twenty thousand
Millwall fans Black Bland weren't fancy thatone bit. The other thing, bris

(22:21):
Well, I mean, I'll seeno reason, you know, whatever the
scenario is, if we get there, I can't see only reason why we
can't actually get to the player final, wouldn't win it, to be quite
honest. We're looking at the teams, I mean, because we've played them
all before obviously, but I can'tsee it being better than us. No,
I think one step at a time. I think that if you look
at the four games or the gameswe played with Drewn, drawn twice with

(22:45):
Lowton, I think did we beatbeat Barrow and loose to Borrow um or
draw against the season though, Yeah, I mean, so you know,
we're not scared of anybody less forsure. And again, as I say,
if we do, if we doget in the into that position,
there'll be no unfencing, no oneoffency coming down at the Den because when

(23:07):
it's packed and it can be ferociousdown there, you know, and the
and the fans will be a properlybut they'll give. They'll give the team
and the away fans you know, you know, they'll know what South London's
all about when they when they comedown on Saturday. Right, Yeah,
there's even a week or two ago, there's a lot of fans um So

(23:30):
that Gary rawit has got to gobecause we're falling out the playoff places and
I know, results are conspired andwe're in a great position, But what's
your thoughts on Gary rowit? Andyou know, considering what he's done the
last season or three, I thinkthat we went for a time in all
our lives that was very uncertain.COVID was, you know, no one
knew what was going on, andthe jabs and playing beyond closed doors and

(23:55):
just keeping the club going and andthe team motivated to play in very unusual
circumstances. And I think the lasttwo years, as you rightly say,
he's looked down his strength and thesquad um. You know, as you
last season we just missed out. This season, we're seeing our own ends
to stay in the playoffs. Sothere's there's gradual improvement. So you can't

(24:18):
you can't say anything about Gary. You know, some people you know,
it's the same as every manager. You know. Neil played a way of
football. Gary plays his own wayof football. You know John Dock played
his way of football. There's there'sno right or wrong way of playing football.
The biggest thing is football is gettingresults, and basically at the moment
we're getting results. We're in theplayoffs. So you've got to say that

(24:41):
Gary routs doing a fantastic job.Considering what you know about John Docking,
Brian, if I would all likethis to happen, Gary did get throvoted,
would you say he was a partwith John Dock or would you still
say John Docks above him? Asa very unfair question, I think,

(25:02):
Um, we had we had agroup of players that were magnificent. You
know that we didn't ever so Imean I wouldn't like to play against Terry
and Lesna in midfield. I meanthey were horrible. I mean you know
they were. They were really areto play against. And you know you
had you Jimmy Carter, you hadPaul Stevenson, you had Chicken George,

(25:23):
you had Kevin O'Callaghan. You know, the strength in depth that we had.
If someone come in, there wassomeone else that could come in.
It was just as good to taketheir place. Apart from Teddy and Kess,
I mean ted and Kess were fantastic. So the squad that we were
lucky enough, and a lot ofthem were homegrown. You've got to remember
that the squad that we inherited knewwhat the fans rule about that we knew

(25:47):
what they demanded from players. Um, you know, and you see I
mean Fiel would tell you we couldhave won four Neil and get booed off,
but we could have you know equally, you got got you know,
one that got beat four one willget clapped off. You know, Mill
fans, they expect to work hardall through the game and to give you
all. And if they if yousee, if you if the fans see

(26:08):
him doing it, then it's great. But going back to your question,
I'm always going to beat me feelingout and our squad as being the best
Mills ever had because we're the onlyteam at the moment in Miles history it's
played in the top flight. Butdon't get me wrong, we want Gary
Rowitt to get up to the PremierLeague and we want him to do it

(26:30):
this season. Staying on the frameof fans comments, boy that I'm seeing
lots of comments from fans saying aboutGeorgian goal that Bart should be in goal.
As a goalkeeper yourself, what's yourtake on that. I think I
think Bart has been absolutely magnificent whenhe played the first two two or three

(26:55):
years. I think he put hisperformances goes a long way to put us
in the positions that we were inand I thought he was unbelievable when he
first come. I think this season, I think he had a couple of
in different games and a few goalsthat maybe he shouldn't and Gary made the
choice of putting in Long now.Obviously for the first I don't know,

(27:17):
ten or eleven games, Long didn'tdo nothing wrong, kept a few clean
sheets. But there's you know,I don't want to you know, it's
a personal pressurance. You know,at the moment, Long's got the number
one shirt and he's got you know, he hasn't done too much wrong.
In my opinion, he might havelet some goals in that he should have
said, but every goalkeeper does that. Goalkeepers playing confidence were in the playoffs.

(27:42):
Let's let's get behind him and Bartis there ready to come in if
if he gets injured or the managerdecides to put him back in. I
know Bart's a top professional and he'llbe champing on the bit to get back
in the team and if he's ifhe's needed between there and the playoffs,

(28:03):
he will be ready. But um, you know, it's it's tough.
It's tough being a goalkeeper. Youknow, one mistake and the crowd get
on your back. And that's whyit was brilliant growing up at Millwall and
planning goal in front of Mill's crowdbecause they let you know, they let
you know that they weren't happy withyou and you had to you had to.

(28:25):
You had to be able to takeit and then go out the next
game and rectify it and then theywould they would give you the praise that
you wanted to. It can belonely sometimes. The thing is it's a
trait for me. Will actually primeand you go back, look Satson before
you and then you go through. You've got Warner Um our goalkeeping coach at

(28:45):
the moment. His name just completelygone away from me, which Marshall,
We've always had a string of good, gold solid goalkeepers for our time at
this club. Well, it's oneof those things. And yeah, it's
an important position. Go back toJohnny Jackson and them type of people and
um, you know, as youright, he said Brian King. Obviously

(29:07):
he's but he was a magnificent goalkeeperfor the club. U. So yeah,
you're right, But you know,I just feel that it's a it's
a very hard position for a manager. A lot of managers don't like goalkeepers,
so you know, if they're notplaying well, they're the first ones
that want to get them, youknow. Changed. But I think Bart's
been a little bit unlucky. Butat the same time, I don't think

(29:30):
long he's done anything too much wrongin between the sticks from when that strike
on Friday night? Should he getto it? Um if you want my
honest opinion, Um, I wasin Ala kenty and I was I was
on a site visit so with anotherfootball club, so I didn't manage to

(29:52):
see the game. So I'm notgoing to comment. Fair enough, fair
enough, I enjoy it. Butthe Ted, he's got to comment about
why he was an allocated Yeah, but you mentioned Brown a couple of times
about sort of the things that youdo at the moment, and I believe
you're managing director of sporting events. What's the company do and what work do
you do in the company as littleas possible first of all, but no

(30:17):
answering that one. But basically I'mvery obviously the players that I played with
and played against and our managers andcoaches which I know, and what we
do is we do professional training campsall around the world for football clubs.

(30:37):
So for instance, I can't tellyou the name of the club obviouslyakers confidentiality
and different bits of pieces, butwe were in allocated seeing football pitches,
seeing hotels, looking at menus, all the different logistics that need to go
together to make a training camp. That's basically what we do. We've got
probably faulty venues around the world thatwe can offer football clubs and obviously if

(31:02):
we're lucky enough to get one,we do we do their training camp.
So we've got about ten in thesummer and in the winter is our strong
period where we go further afield toScandinavia. We were in the Russian market,
a Ukrainian market, but obviously youknow, due to what's going on
in the world, they're no longeravailable. So you know, Bulgaria,

(31:22):
into Hungary, into Austria, alot of clubs that we look after.
Into Belgium we took. We tookEndswerp to the buid Ur in the World
Cup. We took Sunderland and Lutonto the buyduring the World Cup m and
we took Bournemouth as well, Sothere's um, you know that that's basically

(31:42):
what we do. We put trainingcomes together warm weather where where the team
can go out and train and playgames against other teams from around the world
and your party. This is togo forward first and sample the menus and
sample the refreshments that may be onoffer. What we're trying to say,

(32:04):
yeah so yeah, something something likethat, we have to army men.
So yeah. It's just just makingsure really that the hotels are aware out
to look after the football teams. The menus are massive, you know,
non fat menus. Um. Youknow, you can't believe they're in depth.
It goes with the meals and menusand sources and different bits and pieces

(32:28):
and the low fat yogurts and thesalads and different chicken and fish and the
way it's cooked. Everything's at adifferent level from from where when we finished
playing and had fish and chips inthe local restaurant. It's it's it's totally
different now. I could see youand Field's face if you turned up to
an hotel when that was what wasoffered to you before you played. To

(32:51):
be honest, I've got to sayI would prefer to wait what the players
areat now. I think there's alot of things to be said about how
football has changed. I think sometimesit's going a bit too far, but
especially the nutritionists and the sports scientists, um, psychologists. I think they're

(33:12):
very important in football now. Andmy first ever away game we've got staying
in an hotel. I'm only eighteenand I'm with Tony Towner and we're looking
at this menu at twelve o'clock, would you up for your pre match meal?
So Tony town And said, I'llhave white bait, and I went,
I'll have the same as him.I'll meet white bait before a game.
You know, that was me prematchmill. So yeah, when they

(33:34):
look, when they look at ourthings have moved on from the seventies eighties,
nutrition is right up there as amajor step forward, you know.
Yeah, yeah, can you remember, I don't know whether you remember.
It was a giant center forward wegot from Fulham in the early eighties,
Um John Mitchell, John Mitchell,Yeah, I loved his fishing. He

(33:58):
had to for his match Mill ifit wasn't over, So we had the
right mumble, yeah, you know, pre match Mills. And and after
a game what was it McDonald's Andthen I think it was fish and chips
field was it fish and chips? And then and then later on. We
had a run chef on the coachcoming back, didn't we you know,
yeah, yeah, So I meanthat's what I'm saying. Times have changed.

(34:20):
Like after a game now football clubswill eat burgers, they'll eat um
uh, pizzas to get back intoThey need as much rubbish in their in
their bodies to get back all theenergy that they lost during the playing the
games. So you know, afterthe games, it's you eat as much
rubbish as you can. Yeah, because Chris Guffery. Yeah, so that

(34:43):
that that's um, that's you know, how are a lot of things that
we were speaking about in and nowLa Canty. You know that after the
game that they want these type offood so the players can you know,
get back as much energy as theycan as quickly as possible. And to
do that it's the lights of youknow, hamber because pizzas that type of
thing. So yeah, I mean, as you say sports science, you

(35:04):
know, you can imagine me eatinga burger after the game. Couldn't you
win our played? They would havegot as much stick as you could get.
But you know, for every powderon the Friday on the scales,
on the Monday on the scales,I was on fifty pounds a pound,
so I think so, so yeah, it's it's it's changed. But I
must say, um, for thebetter. I think I don't think the

(35:30):
players. And I'm going to saythis maybe get a bit of stick about
this, but I think we hadmore passion for the game. But I
think the players, um, nowI looked after a lot better. They're
conditioned better. Um and you knoweven with the GPS and the heart monitor
they have why the games going onthat you know, the sports signists now

(35:50):
if the players are over and exertingitself and may get an injury, they're
pulled off, you know, soso that you know they're going to be
available for three or four games ratherthan pulling a hamstring or whether it may
be so as I say that thesports science now in football is is a
massive message thing and long maout continuebecause the boys are fitter and stronger,

(36:13):
and you know that's something that wehad to work hard with and the proof
of that broys they're playing longer. They're thirty five, thirty six, thirty
forty. They look after them nowand they're lasting longer. Yeah, the
field spot on and obviously with themoney that's in the game. Now,
that's the name of the game thatyou know, the longer that you can
play, the more money you canearn, and it gives your stability in

(36:36):
life for your family. So youknow, there are classes from You've got
to remember it. It's maybe aten fifteen year career film. So if
you can't give yourself fit and freeof injury, the money that players are
earning now, you know, itmakes them stable for the rest of their
life. Whereas whereas you know,we're still working and on the radio trying
to get a dollar. Oh,you're being paid by you Phil. I

(37:06):
would normally say good Brian at thispoint in the show, but Brian is
let to stay with us for therest of the show today and joining with
the additional discussion that we've got laterin the show. But I'll be asking
for a prediction for Monday Gates Blackburnlater at the den On later in the
show as well. I'll pat wouldthey'd like to talk about a special edition
program for the Blackburn game. Hi, I'm here to tell you about your

(37:30):
Blackburn match day program. The specialedition, double sized program will be two
pounds, and we'll not only featurethe usual match reports, supporters message board
and up to the date news andopposition reviews. It will include a special
twelve page Goodbye to the Old Denfeature with photos and memories from X players

(37:51):
and supporters. It's thirty years tothe day since we said goodbye to coblow
Lane. Relive those mostly glorious timeswith us in your program. Should you
not be able to make the game, you can buy online from sm program
at ProtonMail dot com. That's sM P R O G R A M

(38:14):
M E at ProtonMail dot com.Thank you, I'm your host, Gary
Staff and with me after that. One likes a talking team of Phil,
Dave, Ted and of course Brianas well. This week, let's hear
from the lovely Ellis Paris here.Thank you for watching my videos. Now
to hear what the mill line isand Romans have been up to. Andy

(38:39):
here? Who is next up forGary Rowit and the line Come on mail
up. Unfortunately we haven't got anythingfrom the Romans this week, but Jeff
was watching the under eighteen to haveanother final this weekend. Let's see how
they got on Milwall Line US iscompletely their Double Cup victory with a dominant

(39:01):
seven nil win over Hackney Wick Juniorsin the London FA Under eighteen Cup Final
at Carshalton on Sunday. The firstleg of the double had come the previous
week with an exciting three two victoryover Brentford in the Capitol Cup, which
is a competition for senior sides mainlyfrom the Greater London League, but against

(39:22):
Hackney Wick that coach Ted Jones wasable to use all nineteen players in the
squad over the two games, usingall five substitutes in both matches against hackney
Wick Midfield and Melissa Jones was usedat center back, deputizing for the injured
Molly Self who had got injured inthe previous week's final, and it was

(39:45):
Jones who scored the first two goals. Chloe Bryan then scored a beauty to
make it three nil from a greatcross by player of the match Chloe Jardine,
and then went and made it fournil by halftime. Wick had some
very talented play and held their ownon the terraces as well with a rowdy
Millwall crowd, but they could notlive with a depth in the Lioness's squad.

(40:07):
Francis Kurt and Keana Dillon Bent addedtwo brilliant individual goals and Renee McCleod
Graham scored home from the penalty spotwith a great smashing effort earlier the Lionesses
under eighteen. Earlier, the Underlinessunder fifteen team had lost their London FA

(40:28):
Cup Final four one to Harringay, but they're highly successful junior side. It
was Nell Doe that scored Millwall's goalwith a far post header. They play
Hackney. Sorry, they play Worthingat home on Saturday morning at Saint Paul's
sports Ground in rather hide the firstteam. Meanwhile, after a week's rest,

(40:53):
continued their league program against Saltdean Unitedagain at Saint Paul's one thirty kickoff
on Sunday afternoon. Thanks Jeff. So, as we've been talking about earlier
in the show, Blackburn up forthe Lions. Blackburn are currently ninth I
believe in the table. Have recentlydropped out the Fails following a bad run

(41:16):
of form which has seen them notwin in eight games, but they do
come into the game with a slimchance of making the playoffs. The Lions,
as mentioned earlier, just either winto secure playoff place. Phil.
I'll start with you first. Doyou think the Lions will get over the
line, and what will the nervesbe like in that dressing room before the

(41:37):
game or do you not think therewould be any No, let's say it
again, it's a must win game. And you know on this show that
I've said this word the words.Everyone can beat anyone. And that's exactly
what's happen in the last few weeksbecause we went on a little dodgy run.
But everyone beating everyone has left usin a position where we went on

(41:59):
Saturday it's game over. What Iwill say the Blackpool game would have given
us some confidence, but it couldbe a really tough one for Gary Rowitt,
Like who is he going to pick? He's got competition for places now
the players come back fit, whatformation, what attacking in ten? Does
he keep it tight and play lothe's done most of the season or does

(42:21):
he go for like he did againstBlackpool. I will say this that the
ten day break has probably helped him. We all know he gave him four
days off, but I think theweather has been good and they would have
had good prep on the training ground. But for me, it's the attitude.
It's all right being a skillful player, it's all right being fit and
strong and quick. But if youhaven't got the right mental approach so you

(42:44):
go into the game, you can'thave any fear. I would and I'll
probably speak for Orney as well.I would love to play in this game.
I would love to play in thesell out. I would love the
hostile atmosphere because here is on theback of my neck and I just wanted
to perform. But that's me.So you need these characters, you need
that no fear confidence and wholly touchedon it earlier, on this winning mentality.

(43:07):
You know, they've got a winagainst Blackpool that would that's just boosted
our chances because but we need bigpeople, you know, it's big players
to step up, and we've gottenI think they had to win on the
Blackpool and they did, and weperform really well. Is a good team
performance, and people stepped in anddefended when we had to defend to see

(43:29):
the game out. So I thinkthere's remnants of the eight eight squad that
we've been talking about rock solid andsay nine how to win, but you
cannot the mental side of it.I don't see too many too much fears.
I think that the players together, there's a bit of competition for places.
They all celebrate together when the goalsgo in, they all celebrate when

(43:51):
they win a game together. Thatdon't seem to be any any clicks amongst
the squad, So I'm quietly confident. But as I say, I wouldn't
read too much in the Blackburn losinga few games, because they'll come back
kick you in the teeth. Butif the attitude is right and and the
structure in the formation, everybody goesout does their job. Yeah, it's
going on and we could get itover the line of that hostile atmosphere.

(44:13):
Dave, what do you think?Yeah, feels feels dead right what he's
saying. But my take on itis that that coming after the Black Black
Blackpool win, Um, you knowthat game, we were so up for
it from the off, and that'swhat we've got to be. We've got
to go out and grabbed the grainby the throat from the off. Don't

(44:36):
sit back and see what's going todevelop. Take the game to Blackburn,
Um Blackpool. First off, wewere comfortable and then they got that dodgy
penalty, which I think rattled theteam because up until halftime they looked really
sort of back on heels and theywent in at half time, came out

(44:58):
as they were to start. Wejust went on on one. So that's
the sort of thing we've got todo on Monday. Take the game to
them and just win. And Ithink they'll do that, Ted, Yeah,
I think. Obviously, up untilBlackpool our form have been a bit
dodgy, and Gary decided to changethe formation and although you know, I

(45:22):
said myself, I thought we shouldhave done it a couple of games before
that, but he changed the formationanyway, and we see a different team
entirely the way that they played comparedto the week before a Wigan. So
I wouldn't be changing anything to startwith for this game. I'd go with
the same starting lineup personally, andthe beauty of it being, as I

(45:42):
was saying earlier about the squad depth, we've got enough on the bench there
to change things if it's not working. Phil it is quite rightly pointed out
that Blackburn would be saying similar sortof things that you know, forget about
them last games we've played. Thisis it. Get out there and do
your job and do what you can. You know they're going to be professional
about it. They're going to butat the end of the day, there

(46:02):
is that one who wants it more, you know. And I just think
that they looked so much more comfortablelast week at Blackpool with the change in
the formation, that they seem toall know what they was doing. And
we have got that bit of qualityhere and if duncan what more could play
like he did last week? Heshowed his quality with a second goal that
brad Shaw got. Stars is aquality player in my opinion, I like

(46:30):
to come off the bench and frightenthe life out him with his pace,
and you know, there's plenty ofpositives for me a wall. If they're
all focused and they've all got thewant in them, you know, I
see no reason why we can't winthe game. It's m I feel much
more happier about it after last week'sperformance than I did perhaps before that,
but I always felt we would getthere. So fingers crossed on Monday we

(46:53):
do the final bit and get ourselvesinto the playoffs. And Bright, I
know we've already asked you what youthink will happen, So did you agree
with what's been said? Yeah?I do, But I think that the
pressure was on the boys leading upto this last game. I think that
we've been there and thereabouts and everybody'sbeen trying to wield as a team on

(47:15):
to get into the playoffs, andI accorded by Krook, the last game
has come and I think me personally, it relieves the pressure a little bit
on the boys. I think theycan. They can. They know what
they're going to do. They've gotto do. It's in their own ends.
They've got to go out there, perform, win the game. We're
in the playoffs. I think thatyou know, it's the last game.
Every everything's in our end. Soand listen, Gary's going to be up

(47:37):
for it. The whole staff andsquad know what they've got to do.
They know they've got to go out, score goals and win the game.
And I've I've no doubt in mymind that with the crowds, with with
the passion that they're going to givethe players on the pitch and the yeah

(48:00):
to as its Phil just said justa minute ago, we've got a strong
back line, you know, oneof the strongest back lines in the league,
and they've been together to four orfive years. They'll be they'll be
well up for it. And puta fiver on Coop scoring a scoring aheader,
all right, So I've got nodoubt that the boys are going to
go out, They're going to performwell, and I think they're going to

(48:22):
win two or three nil. Rightas Brian's just done, he's pretty prediction
on there. Just quickly fire throughPhil quick prediction too, nil, Dave,
I'll go with Brian free nil.Ted, I wish you'd ask me
this question on Saturday after we've beenat the end of the season to do

(48:44):
on Friday, because I'll be watchingthem see what they're drinking, I've got
to tell you. But in allhonestly, I think I think Phil's got
it too nil. I can't disagreewith anything that anyone said. I will
go three nil, and to behonest, after seeing to you guys and
Brian's obviously a little bit closer thanmost of us on in its still be

(49:05):
a bit more confident. So Ithink I'm definitely going to go for a
three nil as well. So thirtyyears ago, on Monday the eighth,
the Lions played their last ever gameat then against Bristol City. Sorry Brittle
Roberts, get it right. Ipersonally have so many wonderful memories of the
old Place, including seeing Teddy scoringgoals were fun, being bumped over the
turnstiles, and of course fall inlove with Mill when my grand day used

(49:29):
to take me, and then mydad who still joins me, and my
now mill addicted six year old sonand my four year old daughter. But
I wanted to hear some stories fromtwo X players who trod the hallow turf,
and from the panelists tonight who havewatched many a game at the old
Place. Blind me aware of thosethirty years gone, Phil, I'll start
with you give me only one becauseI know what you and Brian are going

(49:52):
to be like. Only one memoryfrom that old ground. Oh well,
aware a begin mate, it's U, I said, one, yeah,
one paragraph. I don't know.I first went down there in nineteen seventy
three, thirteen year old, andI stood on the cold blow lane and
that was me hooked. And I'mmoving around to the halfway line. Then

(50:14):
I signed a schoolboy. So I'mnarrowing them around the chain rooms in the
tunnel, and I'm taking in thesights, the sounds, the smells.
You know, if you've ever beenin the chain rooms, there's that smell
of the jails, and then andthe routines and the pros, and then
I signed apprentice. So I wascleaning the kit but I was also on
the pitch, fork in the pitch, in troller gear in the rain,
weeding the terraces, changing the bloodybulbs up the floodlight. I trained against

(50:37):
honestly, training on the pitch withpeople like Kitchen and the thorney Field Walk
and my idols. And then I'dgo on and I've made me debut at
home against west Ham, beaten twoone when I'm playing beside kits So I
never made four rounder games from meall, but who's going to take that
away from me? Playing west Ham? I'm beaten to one and I'm playing
next to the club's latest servant. And that's that's the taste. That was

(51:00):
the first ever taste of that atmosphere. And you've got a big mill fan
to understand when I say that atmosphereand we gave something back. I remember
the FA Youth Cup final I've scoredagainst man City and it's brilliant because we
gave the fans something to celebrate thatnight. And I've got lifelong teammates Paul
Roberts, Dave Martin, and thesepeople. Then I'm in the first team.

(51:22):
We trained on the picked a fewtimes. I absolutely some players didn't
like I'm going for our bloody lovedmatch days at home. I was gutted
if I never played. And whenyou brought up Billy Neil as your coach,
oscar Arf Doc Frank. I neverwanted to leave the club. But
again, who in my wildest dreamswould ever say I'm coming back in eighty
six and a second spell and I'mgoing to play against alongside with my brother

(51:45):
in front of Brian, or playingwith Teddy and Cass top lads winning that
league a more amazing support, thatunique hostile atmosphere apart from spitting on me
and slashing my car tires when welost, um butlding fans and I'll remember

(52:05):
when Terrio look turned up. Iwas having a bit of treatment and what's
it like here? I went,We'll put a shift in, make a
few tackles and they love you.I think you got booked five times in
five games when you can actually tacklesomething. But the fans, the terraces,
the lack of facilities, Um,you stand and watch the fans.
I was injured once and Mimi brotherhe was suspended and we're standing watching the

(52:27):
fans come through the turnstyles and theyall coming through one in a fight.
You could just taste the violence inthe here at times. But I love
the place, and yeah, whatmemories. And I can't name thousands of
fans, the Kempsters, you nameit. The fans have made the place
and the players that are played besidemade the place special. That's all I'll
say. It's special. Thanks forMacharian, Brian ord to you next.

(52:54):
Um as you know all my familyand Millwall supporters, so I can remember
Tuesday nights, fifteen hundred people onthe terraces. It seemed empty. Um,
you know that they're they're there. The times that resonate with me.
When I was watching the players, the Johnny Jacksons, the Brian Kings,
as Phil Righty said, I stoodat the cold blow lane end with my

(53:16):
dad and his schoolmates and everything elseand and watched, you know, all
the players that have come through itas so many. You know, I
don't know if you remember Phil.I don't know if he was playing.
We played Exits to our own onenight or one Saturday, and I think
it was one of kids's last games. I think we were four kneeled down
halftime and I won five four andkids tried an over read kick and that

(53:39):
was him. He was carried off, but he was. It was it
was just just games like that.I mean, obviously I was a goalkeeper,
so I watched goalkeepers, but Ican remember some amazing players. Tony
Town and we got him from anon league side. He tormented us in
the cup and the club went outand bought him. Know that Keith Stevens,

(54:01):
you know, Rhino, you know, emphasized the type of player that
that mill will want. That theTeddy sharing thems, the Neil Harris's that,
Tony Cascarino's nowhere the back of thenet is that Steve Morrison's. I
don't know if I mentioned date, but all the all the players that have
graced and it's such a shame thatwe had to move, but we did

(54:22):
have to move. But that thatground was something special. It was it
was it was just Millwall. Thatground was just Millwall and it was a
pleasure to play there. And theday we got promoted, obviously, I've
got to mention that it was ait was a real special day. Um.
I think that most of the team. You know, just remember it

(54:46):
was amazing to you know, let'sgo and picking up the trophy and fans
around the pitch. It was.It was just an absolute magnificent memory.
And it's uh, I'm very, very lucky to be a mill All goalkeeper,
played firstly for the club, butto have been in the side that
got promoted to the to the FirstDivision for the first time in the club's

(55:09):
history. And you know, it'sjust a Millwall's a special club. It's
it's a special club and if youget it, you get it. But
you know, if you don't asa player, you've got to watch out
because the fans are after you.And that and that for me sums up
Millwall and the old ground. Itwas magnificent. People always used to say,
Phil Brian that where used to inthat tunnel. You could hear the

(55:34):
concrete being just stamped on above yourhead and it was scared. The opposition
senseless. They didn't even want tocome out. What was your impression to
see in the faces of the oppositionbeside you when they're hearing that noise?
Do you know what? For me, it was the whole package. You
turn up at Millwall, you've gotto go through those tunnels, and you

(55:54):
know the waist land at the backof the Order and Road in in my
time, and there was every everycoach that ever came through there having supporters,
had to run the gauntlet of theCrown and Anchor and the old and
the old Kent Road or all theestates, So there was a whole package
before you. Then there's the novoriety of the fans, so the brave

(56:16):
turned up. And then they're puttingthis pen. I'll call it a pen
because you know he wouldn't treat fanslike that. Now, stick him in
that tiny corner with old the decentview and then surrounded by about four or
five thousand nutcases wanted to kill him. And there was this atmosphere and you
felt it. And I just thinkthe changing room, the away changing room,

(56:36):
it was my front rooms bigger thanthat, you know, And it
was you're right, the terraces andthat roof went right above it. And
I'm not going to go into it, but there was a few naughties going
on in the tunnel, and ifyou had a chance to have a little
chat with your opponent, that wouldadd. That little chat went on,
and but I just think there wasa whole package with the old dent and

(56:59):
yeah, and then there was anice little greeting party for the visiting sports
when they left as well, andthey had to run the go all the
way back home again. So ithad a real hostile atmosphere about it,
and some players woulted and some playersabsolutely loved it. And the eighty eighteen
all he will back me up here. I think every single one embraced it.
I think we all got it.We all understood it. You put
a shift in, you won yourtackles, and you've got the rewards of

(57:22):
the crowd backing and baying, youknow, paying for you. So yeah,
but the change rooms were best tohit in their way side, that's
for sure, Drying saying, Butwhat carrying them from Phil being an apprentice,
Um, we used to get toldto let the balls down and give
them the worst warm up balls wecould give them. Um, so you

(57:45):
know the balls that we were givingthem to warm up and weren't particularly in
the best condition and weren't pumped up. So they were training with, you
know, going down a pitch offlat balls. And you know that as
Phil said that the rhinos we didn'tclean them, so they were feel for
you know, the bars, wedidn't clean them, so they had all
scuming from the last team that wasin there. Deliberately we didn't give them

(58:08):
any water, so you know, the bars were cold, um, so
you know they knew before they walkedinto the ground. That's you know that
they were coming into dirty bars withcold water and you rhinals, so you
know that's I said. They gottreated down at our place. And just
to let you know, our kitman, Tubsy Um, there was there

(58:30):
at the time. I'll never forgetthat. We played, we played away
and the kit got left. Tubsyleft the kit there maybe two o'clock in
the morning, three o'clock in themorning, and I wasn't in the first
team then, but the apprentice isat to be in nine o'clock next morning.
And underneath the stands we have toput rat traps down every day because

(58:50):
there used to be loads of ratsin around where the kit was um,
so we used to catch two orthree every night. So this particularly night
we thought, what we're going todo. He's put the dead rats in
the in the skin. So basicallywhen Tubbsy come in and opened it up,
there's two or three rats look atthem in the case, so you
can imagine what happened when he openedit and screamed, all the boys are

(59:13):
waiting for it, and that thentype of memories. You know, Phil
said that it was great. Itwas, it was. It was brilliant.
And just to let you know,Phil's touched about running the goldlet.
If you didn't play well either, and he was walking off down that tunnel,
you got pelted with paying coins andtwo beat coins or whatever they were.
I was lucky. I made afew quid every week in the gold

(59:35):
Mouth, but um, you know, it was, it was. It
was just the whole place. AsPhil said, you know, even going
back to the the players lambs thatyou know that that we run over there.
I think Rhino took he used torun it, and I think we
were skinned. I think we werebankrupt after about three games. Rhino kept
on nicking all the money. Butyeah, it was it was just m

(59:59):
It was just amazing, amazing, amazing, and you know we had to
change grounds. It couldn't be developed. Um, so you know, did
you ever a fan club amongst themill fans? I had a fan club.
My brother Nick had a fan club, and I used that term very
loosely when you say coins. Minewas rocks, spit and coins. But

(01:00:23):
I had my own personal fan club. Is about fifty of them that bloody
hated me, and I never wentover there to take a throw on.
I'll let somebody else do it stuff. Yeah, I don't know whether they
throw the pan coins at me,feel or someone else from the other team,
But I didn't care at a timebecause after the game I used to
pick up a tenor in coins.Remember I remember the Crystal Palace with one

(01:00:45):
kneeled down. I think Mark Brightor Eve Wright scored after about five minutes
and they slow and clapping us something. We've got eighty five minutes to go.
It was going on. I wantto have to take a throw on.
They're all running down, spitting atme, fraying lumps of the bloody
terrace at me. The next timewhen I was there to take the Fran
just got it and launched it anyway. I just legged him feel stuff.
That was like poncas. Yeah, you run the whole link for the pitch

(01:01:09):
of the order and road in.We had a twenty two man fight up
the other end against that palestine.Yeah, I mean, you can't you
can't believe it, can't. Thearea has worked out the last game of
the season that we got promoted armat the top end like for when he's
playing the whistle. So I've actuallyrun completely through all the meal wall fans
and as you say, they tookmy boots and took my shirt, and

(01:01:30):
took my shoults and took everything. He was lucky to get back in the
dressing room. And the last timethat happened before that was my good mate,
had good mate, Paul Roberts, for everything he'd done for the club.
He'd give it a large and someone'sgone up the halfway line and decked
him and that's when the referee fromYeah, I want everybody in the penalty
area and when I blow the whistle, legg it. It was the last

(01:01:52):
time. All memories, that wasthe funny, one of the funniest things.
When the blonddare did me feel Yeah, Robo come back with blonde there
and one of the bushwackers run andgive him a right hand and he was
stretched off. Oh dear right,Dave, tell me your memories before we
go have a chat with Ted aswell. Well, I've been going a

(01:02:15):
long time, you know, I'mcertainly four now, so Um, it's
you know, one of those placesthat as soon as I was taken in
there as a kid, I didn'twant to go anywhere else. It's absolute
neat hostility. It's the only wayI can put it. Thats a low
wall round the outside of the groundand the players were entire ting distance.

(01:02:37):
Um you could you could like feelthe breath of the fans on. Yeah,
I'm sure because away fans away teamsused to come to be in a
dressing room hearing that noise outside anddrawing lots. Who's going to take corners?
Um? It was just fantastic.Um. The some of the some

(01:03:00):
of the memorable bits. I rememberkitchen up playing a muddy Den one night
and he's off the ball up thepitch and one of his boots come off
a cross those were that way.But he carried on running up the pitch
to follow the ball up. Noneof this business of going down, putting
your boot on, doing your lacesup. He carried on until there was

(01:03:21):
a breaking play. Then when Ifound his boot and put it on,
set on the floor and put iton. None of this like it is
nowadays. It is just one ofthese things just just get on with the
game, you know, I meankitchen. His first game, he was
booed off the park, but whenhe come back the next game, he
never looked back. That man.We had the unbeaten run of fifty nine

(01:03:43):
games at home, unbeating in theleague. Fantastic, And the day ended
against Talky was it their conches atBmouth. Two coaches outside the Den in
cold Blow Lane were set on fire. I mean, well, thank you.
That was just so many, somany, so many things that happened

(01:04:05):
at the Old Den. And Italked to my my son and my grandson
and about the atmosphere at the OldDen compared to the New Den. There
wasn't a comparison to me that wasreal well neat I was still a team,
violence, passion all rolled up intoone and you had your way.

(01:04:27):
Team had to come and face thatum. But the New Den. The
only comparison I don't do that ismaybe one of the playoff games. But
yeah, to me, there'll neverbe a replacement for the the Old Den,
but hopefully on Monday it'll come prettyclose to it. Touchwood, touchwood,
ted. Well, I remember thefirst time I went was with me

(01:04:51):
Dad, and me, Granddad. But I'll remember me Ted's saying to me,
this is a special club, son. We kicked off fifteen minutes later,
and then money else we killed offa quarter past three, he said
next, because they had given ustime to get here from the pub.
And it's always stuck in my headas a sort of generous club that middle
while they let the fans drink andfinished their beer and give them fifteen minutes

(01:05:15):
to get to the ground. ButI think the biggest one that sticks in
my mind at the old then allthe things that everybody spoken about, we
all know that that's that's the natureof the ground, the atmosphere that was
created by But that game against Prestonwhen we fought in seventy two, I
mean it was when we fought,or the rumor went around that Birmingham was

(01:05:36):
losing and we was going up.The feeling and yet the euphoria for the
sort of ten minutes that he wasgoing on and we was all round round
a pitch and everything. And thensomebody somebody turned around and told the truth
that so and so because it waslike somebody a blue knight, some of

(01:06:00):
the stuck a pin in it.It got sort of deflated. But as
as Millwall fans, I only pickeduself and we carry them. But it's
very hard, I'll fine to describethe Old Din because if you talk to
any other football fan and they talkabout the air ground, it never sounds
anything like that old Din. Theatmosphere never seemed to be the same as

(01:06:21):
what you used to get in thatold Den, you know. And I've
got to I've got to say something, a massive thank you to Brian and
Feel for being in that squad thatfinally got us up to the old First
Division, because there was so manyyears of pain after that seventy two but
then boys finally done it for us, and what a year, a couple

(01:06:43):
of years we had up in theold first Division. But one last thing
about that game, that Bristol Roversgame. I left my house on the
Saturday morning to go to the game, and the next time I'm missus se
me was Monday night and I haven'tgot a clue where I was where I
went. But that was the farewellto the Old Den that I think it

(01:07:03):
deserved from me. So I apologizeto anyone I might have bumped into over
them a few days, but Iwas a little bit worse as you can
imagine, but without a doubt wewere original club, We had an original
stadium, and there's nobody likes us. I'll share my own memories. That's
lovely said, I'll share my ownmemories, and that moment of being in

(01:07:27):
the ground for the first time andgetting the addiction is something that was with
me and lovely to see my sonhas done exactly the same and it makes
me so happy. I think Iwent to the it might be might been
the looting game where my son couldn'tgo because he was he was going somewhere
with his mum, and it wasweird not being in the car with him

(01:07:50):
on Saturday afternoon driving up. Itwas like, oh, it makes not
here. I've got no one tochat to, or it was almost because
I've been for so long driving upmy owner. Now he's coming along with
me, and it's he's not He'snow what I was to my dad to
my granddad's because my dad comes obviouslyhis granddad comes on a Saturday afternoon with

(01:08:10):
us, and it's like the threegenerations have moved on a generation. Because
I used to go to my granddadon a Saturday afternoon and I've just looked
on the Mill history profile and I'vejust found the first game I ever went
to seventh of February nine in eightyone. Sorry first seventh February nineteen eighty
one against Colchester. We won threeone at home. The squad was Jackson,

(01:08:31):
Martin, Roberts Anderson, Tag Coleman, kinsella Memo or x god rest
his soul, Bartley Massey and Dibblewas on the bench. And that was
the first team I ever saw alive. And from that moment I remember standing
in my granddad's hallway him saying tome, Me saying to him, where
you going, grand and he went, I'm off down Mill. He'd go

(01:08:55):
out the door and I'd be leftin the hallway looking at my nan or
my mum and oh, I wantto go. He picked me up and
he come back through the door, picked me up. Darren. In mind,
it's probably halfway through the first halfanyway, so he could probably able
to bad turnstyles. Abud the oldbehind the old man stand and I went
in there and watch the game, and they were my memories of the old

(01:09:16):
place. Obviously, with the oldFirst Division, I saw every home game,
quite a few away games that seasonas well, and that whole place.
My son asked me about it tonight. I said, do you know
what. I find some videos andI'll show you son, because I don't
know why we've not really spoken aboutthe old Grand and then had thirty years
have come up. It's bringing backa lot of memories. But I just
want to say thanks Grand, ThanksDad, and hope now we're moving on

(01:09:40):
that generation and the three of usgo down there on a Saturday, and
we've been there on Monday for thatthirty year anniversary. Gary, you know
that coaster game he was on about. Yeah, that was my last game
for the club. I had arunning battle with Kevin Bremner. It was
a battle and half with him.He imagine what he's like, you know,
And must have had a good gamebecause they sold me. That was

(01:10:01):
my last game. They sold methe following week to Colt stuff. Really
yeah, yeah, but you're notthere, Yeah, you're not there in
this one anymore. Yeah, yourfirst game at the Dame was my last
game before they sold me, andI've gone to Colsters immediately after that fifteen
thousand because he who shall not bementioned decided he didn't want a young sender
back or any young players for thatnow. And yeah, they flogged me

(01:10:26):
for a fifteen grand that week wasmy last. I didn't come back.
I just finished season. We finishedmid table sixteen season. Yeah, and
got ready. Sorry. Can Ijust say that my dad was eight yesterday?
Oh wow, and he's been goingthe Millwall for something like seventy three

(01:10:48):
years. So with my granddad andmy dad and everything else. So I
just want to save me. Daddy'smy hero. And happy birthday, Happy
birthday. Yeah, and my dadwas the same. He's turned eight.
He just on the end of thelast year and he's been doing the same.
So these long store works, likeyour dad, Brian and mine,

(01:11:11):
they are the history of this club. And hopefully we can do something to
make him proud this season, togive them that one last hurrah. And
while we're on birthday, my brother'sbirthdays in two days time, So happy
birthday, Nick mate Yethday, who'salways spring the tears you are? They
all placed in it? Yeah?Does does? Were wonderful memories. We'll
