Our first guest of the evening is quite a well
known figure. Chris Bethel, the person behind the Fans program
(03:14):
says he's known for having so much going on that
even I struggle to keep up with him. He's famous
for making a positive impact and embracing challenges. Please welcome
to the show. The CEO of our mill Wall Community Trust,
Sean Daily.
Speaker 6 (03:30):
Good evening, good evening, all right, Sean. Thank you.
Speaker 1 (03:40):
Sean. It's great to have you back on the show.
The mill Wall Community Trust ran holiday activity and food
camps for six thousand children across Lewisham and Sadak over
the summer holidays. Oh and Brian King with whom they
packed the goal mouth are the Guinness Book of Records
checking you out for such a fantastic communit.
Speaker 6 (04:00):
To your response, I hope not so. The whole idea
of it is that, you know, I'd rather it was
the other way around, that we weren't supplying six thousand meals.
You know, I'd rather we were supplying no meals. The
whole idea of it is for children on free school meals.
(04:20):
So you know, if we had to do ten twenty
thousand and someone would do it, But you know, I'd
like it to be the other way that. You know
that people were capable of, you know, had enough funds
to have their own meals, et cetera. So you know,
I'd really want it the other way. But if they
want to come and follow me, I'm happy with that.
Speaker 2 (04:40):
Sure needs staying here before the Wrecksham game, you will
the first induction ceremony at the Den for the Forever
Lions Club. Ted discussed it last Saturday on Maritime Radio
and it was great to see Brian King, Lesbriley and
brew Buckley received their reward. Which how would these inductions
(05:02):
take place over the season. Who is up next and
what else happens for those selected for induction.
Speaker 6 (05:10):
Yeah, well yeah, the whole idea of it is is
to sort of reward the players that have played for
the club and acknowledge the impact that they've given the club.
So what we're trying to do is once a month,
we're going to try and induct three formal players into
the Formal Players Association. So I think our next game
(05:31):
is Watford. We're looking at Paul Robinson and Tony Cascarino
and Scott Fitzgerald. And what I want to try and
do is for once a month two if we can
nominate free players into it, and it's just for the
fans to sort of like acknowledge what they've done for
the club and everyone to sort of like, I want
to try and build a formal players Association that we
(05:54):
could call on them to do certain things for us,
like a golf day, a former players evening, but really
for the fans to have another opportunity to meet those
players after they've left the club and to just keep
that link with the club all the way through.
Speaker 7 (06:09):
K sure, when you're a right's meal? Hi, Hi, how
are you doing?
Speaker 8 (06:14):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (06:14):
Very well, thank you.
Speaker 7 (06:16):
Good to hear.
Speaker 9 (06:17):
The Community Day, which will take place this season next March,
is organized by a mill Will Community Trust.
Speaker 7 (06:22):
What format will it take this season?
Speaker 9 (06:24):
And how do you cope with sky firing kickoff times
or even change in the day.
Speaker 6 (06:29):
Yeah, well we got hit last year with it where
they changed the kickoff till from three o'clock to twelve thirty.
It just means we've got to cram all our stuff
in within those early hours. But I'm hoping it's going
to stay till three o'clock because then we have a
long running So what we're trying to do is the
linset that we'll try and showcase some of the programs
(06:50):
that we do, like the military, walking football, our disabled program,
and then around the stadium we're trying to have all
our partners we're involved with, things like the police, the
job Center, the military again, anyone that's working with us.
We want to showcase the work they do with us.
(07:10):
And then of course we'll have the mascots will be
children that participate on the programs. The Girls Academy will
be there as like the guest, the God of Honor,
but really just to show the fans the sort of
people that we're engaging with the sort of programs because
you know, all I've ever wanted from the community trustees
(07:32):
the fans to be sort of like acknowledge what we
do and just to know that as a football club
we do this unbelievable stuff. I don't think the fans
know enough sort of community days a day that we
showcase all that sort of stuff.
Speaker 7 (07:48):
Brilliant. Yeah, it sounds really good. I'm really promising.
Speaker 9 (07:51):
I did notice the I did notice the taxi slash
Health and well Being pop up?
Speaker 7 (07:57):
Was that the den before our match against Wrexham. How
did that go? Was that a success?
Speaker 6 (08:03):
Yeah? So I brought that in last year. It's taken
me a long time to get it going. It's taken
me about four years to get the NHS to sort
of engage with us on match days. And my big
sort of reason around it was that, you know, ninety
eight percent of our fans are male. A lot of
(08:24):
them are in that sort of age group thirty up
to about sixty odd and they've always been saying the
government a lot is that, you know, males don't go
to the GPS a lot. You know, they don't want
to know that they're really et cetera. And I always thought, well,
if you brought the health bust to the stadium, the
fans are going to engage in it because the club
(08:44):
have brought it in and it's something that they believe in.
And then you know, it's taken me this long to
do it. Last year, we've done about three or four games.
They're looking to come like every two games. They're going
to come this season and they're going to do they're
going to do emotions around health checks, cholesterol, body weight,
(09:05):
all that sort of things, and then they'll do things
around non smoking, they'll do things around non drinking. But
they're just going to try and educate some of our
fans and to give them sort of like an mot
or like a health check. So you know, I'm going
to be that every time there's it turns up, I'm
going to go and have a health check. They did
my blood pressure, they give my cholesterol, and then they
(09:28):
can signpost us to the GP or to other services.
And I just think it's you know, if we're that
one stop site where fans come in they go to
watch a game, they're going to go and have a drink,
meet their friends, and then for ten minutes they go
and have a health check. It's for them, and it's
a pretty good idea. Thank you. It's something I'm quite
(09:50):
passionate about because you know, I want you know, unfortunately,
you know, I've lost a member of staff in the
last few weeks, and I'm passionate about you know, if
I can do prevention by somebody having a health check
and then they find out they're overweight or they need
to stop smoking, and we can help them as a club,
that's that's our job.
Speaker 8 (10:10):
Yeah, Sean on that, God rest his soul. Temp he'd
be well missed, mate.
Speaker 6 (10:17):
No, I appreciate that we've got you know, we're very
much at the moment, we're very much. Everything we do
at the Community Trust at the moment is around you
know what Tim think about us doing it. You know,
Tim enjoyed it, so you know, as long as I'm
going to be there, he's going to be a massive
part of the Community Trust because that's what he was.
(10:37):
You know, he led from the front. And I think
you can see the outpour of people at the moment
how much impact you made on people within the local community.
Speaker 8 (10:47):
Exactly exactly talking about the local community, ses Sean. I
noticed the new pitch was celebrated at the Paul Sports
Ground last week. Can you tell us what happened and
who was involved? I see there was a few players
down there.
Speaker 6 (11:01):
Yeah. So we've run sat Pools since twenty sixteen and
I came about twenty eighteen and it was we've had
a three year contract with a council. It's always been
a home of Fisher FC, but they weren't in a
position to run it, so it was commissioned over to
(11:22):
the community Trust and it's talk about twenty eighteen nineteen twenty.
COVID hit around twenty so they kept extending it for
year after year after year, and then last year they said,
look we're going to put it out to commission. We'll
ask loads of people to come and commission for it
and see who would like to run it. Of course
we went up for it again and we've been commissioned
(11:44):
for another five years to run the site. And you know,
out of that site we have things like the LGB
football team run out of there, the Lionesses are running
out of there, our Kicks program, all different stuffs there.
So we wanted to have an official opening, you know,
to celebrate the next five years of us, and we
have a plan of what we're going to do. You know,
(12:05):
I want within the next five years, I want to
get Fisher FC in a position that they can take
the site and we become an attenant. If they're not
ready in five years time, we do it jointly, but
eventually I want to hand it back to Fisher. You know,
it's their ground and we'll do their community work for it.
So the council wanted to come down. They wanted to
do a Fisher opening. We've just had a new pitch laid,
(12:28):
which is like a four G. We've just had the
front of the place done up, the clubhouse, we've had
new dugoutsput out, and so we invite down the people
that use it. So we brought down. Jake came down,
Ryan Lennon came down, We had some of the Lionesses
down there, we have some of the Romans, and then
we had the councilors come down. It was officially open.
(12:48):
So it was a great day. And my big thing
to the counselor is is that you know, I could
write a great report and say what we do, but
seeing is believe in it. So come down and see
what we do. So they spent the day down there
and they met kids from Robert Hide School, Bacons. They
stayed and watched the Antisocial Behavior program, which is like
one hundred kids. They stayed and watched the Lionesses and
(13:11):
it's about, you know, come and see what we do
and then scenes believe in.
Speaker 8 (13:18):
It's brilliant, absolutely brilliant. Well done, Sean, Thank you, Piln.
Speaker 1 (13:24):
I saw a picture of you next to the tactics
board at Calmon Road with our first team, but you
weren't talking tactics. Can you tell us a bit about
your visit to the training ground with Jason Vincent?
Speaker 6 (13:36):
Yeah? Sure. So you know, we've got like fifty six
programs that we delivered in the local community, and that
my biggest resource out of all of it is when
players turn up, and when players turn up and endorse
your programs that you know, that's the biggest fee you
can have. So for the last four years I've gone
(14:01):
down to the down to the training ground and I've
presented to the players about what the community trust is.
You know, what the impact the club does in the
local community. You know, we're not that ninety minutes on
the football pitcher on a Saturday. You know, we're three
hundred and sixty five days of the year, twenty four
hours a day, and I don't think the players knew
(14:23):
the impact that the football club does within the local community.
So I get invited down by Jake and I come
and present to the first team about the programs we do,
you know, And you know, lots of people think, oh, well,
you know the community Trust. All they do is they
just run holiday camps. But then when you sit there
and talk to the players around about you know, you've
fed six thousand children during the summer that are you know,
(14:47):
on free school meals, and you cook for families to
take home, and you run a food bank, and you've
got officers that are based in police stations working with
gang members, and you know, you with county lines. And
the players would just shot that the club actually do
this sort of work, and then what from that The
(15:08):
players will then identify which ones they want to get
involved in. Because one big thing I found, like in
my old role, is that you would take a player
down to a venue and he's got no interest in
it at all, and all they talk about is like,
how long do I have to be down there sort
of for the autographs and go. But by going down
there and saying, look, you know, I've got programs around disability,
(15:29):
we've got programs around numeracy and literacy, players will say, well,
I quite enjoyed that. Bat They'll be more brought into
the program, they know more about it. And that's all
I was down there really just to explain to the
players what we do and what they're going to sign
up for, and then to get them to sign up
to say, right, I'm going to come out to your
antisocial behavior at night. Because when I grew up, I
(15:52):
used to go to these sort of programs. You know.
You know you've got players that you know who got families,
and they said, you know what will come to numeracy
literacy Because I've got a young child that's in school
that's doing the see literally own help. So he's really
about me. Sort of like selling the community Trust to
the players. But I don't have to sell it to them.
You know, they buy into it straight away and sort
of you know, Jake Cooper can get rid of him.
(16:14):
The other day, I had to ask him to go
home with you, but he wanted to be there and
he wanted to be with the kids. And you know,
I've had Ryan and Jake came down last year to
see my post sixteen and the idea was they came
down and just talked to the players about becoming a
professional footballer. They came and said, now we'll do a masterclass,
(16:34):
We'll do a coaching session for two hours with them,
and they literally lead on it. So you know, and
then when you've got people like Caspar and people are
from abroad, their communities, trusts aren't doing these sort of
things that we're doing. So when I'm talking about county
lines and gang members and all that, you see Casper
going what, I don't know what you're talking about because
(16:55):
they don't do that sort of thing. So now I
enjoy it as well. Becau is that you know, for
that hour I was down there, they bought into it
all and you know, and now I know that, you
know going forward for this season, they'll they'll come out
and they'll they'll give us one hundred percent for those
those appearances.
Speaker 1 (17:13):
That's that is amazing. That is amazing. So before you
leave us, you know what's coming. It's Ted's Prediction League.
So I'm going to ask you to predict three scores
in the championship. The best score predictor will be rewarded
at the end of the season. So here we go. Sean,
please make your predictions for Charlton Millwall.
Speaker 6 (17:35):
I can't do that one, okay. Oh it's a chart
for eighteen years. I can't turn around and say that
they're going to get beaten even though they are so on.
My heart's with Millwall anyway, So I reckon milweill be
on one.
Speaker 1 (17:48):
Nil, okay, West Brom Derby.
Speaker 6 (17:55):
West Brom to win two nil.
Speaker 1 (17:58):
And Southampton Portsmouth.
Speaker 6 (18:01):
Oh that's going to be I'll go for one one draw.
Speaker 1 (18:06):
Okay. Well, thank you for updating us on the mill
Community trust matters. As always as a friend of the show,
it's always great having you on and we look forward
to joining us later this month. So all the best
to you and your family and goodbye for now.
Speaker 6 (18:21):
Sean, thank you very much, thanks for your support. Good night,
bye bye.
Speaker 1 (18:30):
We will take a break there and hear from Ellie Milliken.
Speaker 10 (18:33):
Oh helly, lovely to see you here up in Armies
then again, and of course you've taken over from the
Brown family. Cape that they have here is just it's
just wonderful. Millwall shirts on the chairs, blue and white
table cloths, blue chairs and all you guys in millworkit
of course, tell me what goes on?
Speaker 6 (18:54):
When are you here?
Speaker 10 (18:55):
What can we expect?
Speaker 11 (18:56):
We're here Monday to Friday from ten thirty till five
every day, open to the public. Everyone's welcome. We open
every match day from eleven thirty till half two.
Speaker 7 (19:08):
We've got a new.
Speaker 11 (19:09):
Family, a new little cafe team and the girls up
here all lovely and friendly.
Speaker 10 (19:14):
So who are the girls that are out here.
Speaker 11 (19:17):
We've got myself Ellie of course, and then we've got
Nicole who works during the week. We've got Michelle who
also works during the week. She's lovely, and Lena who
works on a match day. And my mum Ellen, who's
very well known, well known, she also helps out in
here from time to time. So we've got a lovely little.
Speaker 10 (19:39):
Family to look after the community, wonderful staff. So what's
on offer at the cafe these days?
Speaker 11 (19:47):
We've got everything from chicken burgers to Pannini's to full breakfast, tea, coffee,
hot chocolate, soft drinks, snacks, everything.
Speaker 10 (19:57):
You could need, so it's all all here, all available,
a great team to serve it up to you. Well,
what else can I say but carry on in Harvey's
style here at Harvey's Den Cafe and all the best
to you Ellie and your team, and I look forward
to come out and enjoying some of the fair in
(20:20):
not the far distant future. Well, in fact, I've already
done there. The coffee is just super Thanks Ellie.
Speaker 11 (20:27):
Thanks Amen.
Speaker 1 (20:28):
I'm your host Bethany Mantalow and with me I have
the No One Likes Us Talking Team of Mia Lockett,
Stank Godwin and Gary staff from Monday to Friday and
on Saturday match days. Come along and greet the team
at Harvey's Den Cafe, located on the first floor of
the Line Center on Berlina Road, which houses the mill
Wall Community Trust. Many will be aware that Ellis Barr
(20:51):
underwent an operation to improve her mobility. She is now
at home and recovering well. No One Likes Us Talking
Team mill All Line and many of our listeners wish
you the best for your recovery. Here's Ellis now.
Speaker 12 (21:05):
Hello, Elis here and I'm glad to be back talking
about Mellwell. I know many have watched my videos. Thanks
for your support along the way. It is now time
to hear what all the Merwell teams are up to.
Speaker 6 (21:22):
Come on Marewell.
Speaker 1 (21:23):
Thank you as always Ellis Paul Odin brings us to
Millwall Romans and prize update and we also hear from
Pete de Rosa.
Speaker 13 (21:33):
Hi, it's Paul only at the Millwall Romans with a
little update. A few of the guys ten of us
went up to Leicester last week in for the Leicester
Wildcats Juifson Tournament. They hold it every year. The last
time we've been there a couple over a couple of times,
but the last time I actually won this tournament was
in two thoy and fourteen and I'm very pleased announce
(21:54):
that we actually managed to secure the title again winning
the tournament last Sunday. Our new manager of the Jfson
team Pete Delarusso he's going to be managing the Jfferson
team he took a charge lost last weekend. We're entering
a Gfson league this year, which is for us to
(22:16):
get ready for the league that the actual league for
next year, so we're going to be having some games
across the country and Pete's kurrly volunteered to manage that one,
so I leave a bit of an update for him.
Speaker 12 (22:27):
Hi.
Speaker 3 (22:27):
I'm Peter. I'm the Romans defer send manager. Over the
weekend we took a team to a six side tournament
in Leicester. It was a squad that was a mixed
cross both Ourwell Romance and Millwall Pride team, which was great.
The tournament consisted our seven group games from teams plus
(22:47):
the UK, followed by quad finals, semi finals and a
final thh We played really well but really strugle to
score any goals and He's scoring four goals. We managed
to end the group with three wins and three draws,
which took us through to the quarter final. Going into
the knockouts, we decided to adapt to the strength of
(23:09):
our team and switch to a very defensive style of play,
probably rarely seen in the sixth side game. It worked
and we saw out one their wins in the quarter finals,
the semi finals and final to win the tournament overall,
which was fantastic. Our goalkeeper Jay, who is usually the
first team striker, was also unreal on the day and
(23:29):
only consided two goals overall a role was great weekend
and a huge thanks to the Millwork Communi's trust for
their sport as usual.
Speaker 13 (23:38):
And just a couple of things on the predictions. Then
so big guying this weekend for Carlon Millwell, of why
it's going to have to be a Millall win always
is so too new. One's going to say to Millwell,
West Brom derby. I think that's going to be a
West Brom. We're going to nickname two to one and
South Hampton Pultsmouth and no sort of local derby there.
(24:00):
I'm going to say two nil to Southampton.
Speaker 1 (24:03):
And Romans and Pride are with you too, Ellis they
don't stop winning trophies that lot. The Lionesses traveled to
Dorking on Sunday and Myer was picked up the story
for Manner of Time Radio.
Speaker 14 (24:15):
The mill Lionesses were edged out in a seven goal
thriller at Meadow Bank on Sunday, falling fourt free to
Dowkin Wanderers in a breathless contest that saw the lead
change hands several times. The Lionesses started brightly and might
have been in front inside ten minutes, ca the Townsend
strike was parried away by the Dawkin goalkeeper and Mea
Lockett's follow up effort drifted just wide at the post.
(24:36):
Townsend made no mistake moments later, breaking the deadlock in
the twelfth minute with the composed finish to put mill
Wall ahead, but the lead was short lived, as Dawkin
hit back almost instantly from a fourteenth minute's cross. Kitling
Savage powered Homer header to level the match at one one.
Milwall continued to press and restored their advantage on thirty
three minutes. Maizie Joyce rose highest to meet Ellis Jenning's
(24:57):
pinpoint cross, nodding it in to make it two one
at half time. The second half proved just as lively.
Five minutes after the restart, Emilia Hilawi equalized with a
stunning long range strike, before substitute Georgia Heatman turned home
from close range four minutes later to put Dowkin in
front for the first time. The Lionesses weren't done though.
On the hour mark, Townsend grabbed her second of the afternoon,
(25:19):
sliding in to convert Locket's dangerous ball to make it
three three, but it was the host who had the
final word. Midway through the second half, Helen Ogle latched
onto a loose ball and slotted it past Abby Baravik
to steal a four through victory for Dawkin. Despite the defeat,
Milwell could take pride from a spirited performance twice battling
back in a game full of attacking the tent, but
(25:41):
there were rude defensive lapses that ultimately left them empty
handed in Surry. The next game for the Lionesses is
next Sunday, as they faced Dartford Women at set Pall
Sports Ground, Marles Thornton Maritime Radio.
Speaker 1 (25:53):
Me are you played? It must have been heartbreaking in
the end.
Speaker 9 (26:01):
It was a difficult game. It's always a tight contest
when we do play Dorking, especially away.
Speaker 7 (26:08):
At Dawkins Ground. However, we came around.
Speaker 9 (26:12):
We came away from the game definitely disappointed because we
know as a squad we have so much more to give.
But fortunately it's the start of the season and as
we all know seasons are, they are a long time.
So hopefully we can just dost ourselves off, pick ourselves
up and continue and get back into too good form
(26:34):
because going into Dorking we was off the win, so
hopefully we carry on a bit of momentum going into
Dartford this weekend and yeah pick up where we left off.
Speaker 1 (26:45):
Yeah, absolutely so we go to the Valley on Saturday
for a twelve thirty kickoff. Miles will be co commentating
with Maritime Radio's Clive Charlton reporter. It's a bit of
a first that two commentators are reporting together but for
different fan bases. Chilton had an impressive goalless drawaway to
(27:06):
Bristol City and defeated Watford at home in their last match,
earning four points so far for this season. Both the
club and fans are eager to end the twenty nine
year drought of wins against Millwell in the first derby
in five years. Meanwhile, we are keen to keep our momentum.
Speaker 6 (27:25):
We have been.
Speaker 1 (27:25):
Practicing and have shown greater character on the road, even
though we have lost both of our home games. Given
our recent results, you might expect our odds of winning
to be higher than Chelton's. However, the odds for mill
to win are two to one, a draw is two
to one and a win for Chilton is five to four.
And here we have Miles talking a little bit about
(27:46):
his commentry role with Clive.
Speaker 15 (27:49):
Thanks very much, Trethany. Yeah, so it's very much a
first that two radio reporters are at the the same
and I'm really really privileged to be there at Chelter.
It's not It's actually the first ever away again that
I have reported on, so I'm really pleased to be there.
(28:11):
I think it's going to be a great game as well.
Obviously as a long long standing Millwell fan, I'm really
pleased to be given the privilege to report on it.
Of course my journalistic views will stand with Millwell and
Clives will be in Chelten. But that's why it will
be a great report.
Speaker 1 (28:29):
Right absolutely, So team, is it a home win or
something else? When making your score prediction, remember this year
you can predict the same score as others. What are
your predictions Stan, Chelton Millwell?
Speaker 2 (28:46):
Oh, I take the Millwall to win three to one.
Speaker 9 (28:51):
Maya, I'm going to go Millwall to Chelton one and
Gary uh.
Speaker 8 (29:01):
To Neil to Millwall.
Speaker 1 (29:04):
And I'm going to say the same as Gary to
Neil to Millwell. How do we see the other games going?
So West Brom Derby? Gary? What are you thinking?
Speaker 8 (29:14):
I put three nil West Brom are West Brom Stan.
Speaker 2 (29:21):
Uh Well, I'll go I'll go for a drawer.
Speaker 9 (29:26):
One two two, okay, And Maya I'm gonna go to
West Brom one Derby Neil.
Speaker 1 (29:35):
And I'm gonna go two one to West brom So
the final one Southampton Portsmouth.
Speaker 8 (29:44):
Gary to nil Southampton. I can't see ports forgetting anything
at the so Mary's there.
Speaker 2 (29:52):
Mhm, Stan, I'll go for a one one drawer.
Speaker 1 (29:58):
Okay, Maya.
Speaker 9 (30:01):
I did have Southampton two Portsmouth one.
Speaker 1 (30:05):
Okay, and I'm going to go for a Neil Nol
draw Thanks to that, everyone. Do we have any brief
thoughts about our game away to Palace in the Carabell
on Tuesday.
Speaker 2 (30:17):
Stan, Well, it's going to be it's it's going to
be an interesting game. And I don't necessarily mean just
for on the field. I mean I think there's I mean,
obviously what happens on the field is important, but I
am not so certain that Crystal Palace are going to
consider this game particularly important personally. Now I could be wrong,
(30:42):
but I think at the moment they've got other priorities
and so okay, they're going to start favorites because they're
the home team, they're in the Premier League, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.
But I but I fancies to win. And the reason
I say that is when we played Coventry, I mean,
I thought that was going to be a tough game,
(31:04):
and I was more than happy with the performance we
put in against Coventry, especially in the second half when
they when they brought a lot of their normal first
team regularly, and I thought and when and I thought
Carmel Grant, who was the center of the defense in
that game, along with you know whoever else it was,
(31:25):
I thought he was outstanding, absolutely outstanding, and when he
scored that second goal, it was fully deserved. And I
never thought for a minute we would lose that game.
And I've got a similar feeling this time.
Speaker 9 (31:40):
Yeah, yeah, to be honest, I do have.
Speaker 7 (31:45):
I do have similar views on the game.
Speaker 9 (31:48):
Obviously, I think it's going to be a bit of
a tasty game off the pitch as well as on,
So I totally agree with that. Obviously, last time was
the FA Cup, so we're came out, came out on
top three one.
Speaker 7 (32:02):
But what a game it was.
Speaker 9 (32:03):
And I think obviously with the with the Leam Roberts
challenge early on the last game, I think is kind
of tension going into this game.
Speaker 7 (32:13):
So I think it would be it's always a good.
Speaker 9 (32:15):
Contest Palace for Meal Wall and it's always one what
us fans always want to watch.
Speaker 7 (32:20):
But got back to the boys.
Speaker 9 (32:22):
I think Mill will come come out on top, and
I think it'll be too one to us, But I
think it's about time that that we kind of put
Palace to bed. And I definitely after after our last
performance fee Palace when we came back to equaliers and
then kind of fell short towards the end, I think
it's our time and we deserve a win the fore
the Palace.
Speaker 7 (32:42):
So yeah, I totally agree.
Speaker 9 (32:44):
I think it'd be a tasty game, but I think
it would really be entertaining one and with meal Wall,
we just got to go there and.
Speaker 7 (32:51):
Take the game to them. So I'm looking forward to it.
Speaker 1 (32:56):
Thank Gary.
Speaker 8 (32:58):
Yeah, I completely agree with Stane and and me. Are
there really two different reasons stand because I think Palace
won't be taking it seriously, I really don't. I agree
with you there stand completely. Others feel they've got a
bigger fish to fry. They not had the greatest start
to the Premier League this season and they're gonna be
(33:19):
wanting to consolidate and this might be just too much
of a distraction for them. I can't see them putting
out a full squad. Maybe they might bring on the
testage just for the fun of it towards the end,
but I can't see a full strong squad. I do
feel as they would probably get a start, so that
would be interesting because he needs the minutes and to
get in the manager's good books and also Mere I
(33:42):
agree with you, and to be honest, I don't know
if Roberts doesn't get sent off. I think it's a
very different game and on the fake Cup game and
in stages we we matched them in that pitch. Just
hope we've managed to get one or two players back
fit and at the moment I think Doughty is a
(34:02):
massive loss at the moment, so we get him back,
I think we'd be a lot better. But I also
think we're going to win as well, and I think
it'd be even better. I think it might been comfortably
to Neil.
Speaker 1 (34:12):
Fantastic. We also have predictions from Nick Wive of the
Facebook Millwall Sicily site. Let's hear what Nick predicts.
Speaker 6 (34:22):
Hi, everyone, these are my predictions.
Speaker 16 (34:24):
Charlton one, Millwall two West from two Derby Neil and
Southampton to Portsmouth one. Cheers and we would.
Speaker 1 (34:37):
Like to thank Dave Hart who collates all of the results.
Our second guest has a wonderful connection to Millwall as
a passionate fan. He proudly shares in our heritage alongside
his co host Mike George when they guide others on
their Millwall history and heritage tour the Isle of Dogs. Additionally,
(34:57):
he was the editor of Mike's recently published book Walk
in the Walk. Let's give a warm welcome to Rob Woodford.
Speaker 17 (35:08):
Rob, how do you doing all?
Speaker 6 (35:10):
Rob?
Speaker 1 (35:11):
It's great to have you on. It's been almost a
year since you last joined us. Could you remind us
of your mill heritage? Why? When and how did you
become a fan?
Speaker 6 (35:21):
Oh?
Speaker 17 (35:21):
Yeah, it was back in nineteen sixty four. My dad
took me to my first game of the Old Den.
Was over sixty years ago now, isn't it. And I
don't remember too much about the game, but I do
remember it was the first home game of the season
this season that we got promoted from the old Division
four if anybody remembers that stand and yeah, and well
(35:52):
it was a great run. It led to fifty nine
home games without defeat and two back to back promotions,
So you know, I was in there at a very
good time. Actually I wasn't really irregular till about ninety
sixty seven, I guess. But one thing you'll never forget
is your first away game, right, and that was at
the Valley. It was the opening game of the sixty
(36:14):
sixty eight sixty nine season and we won it four three.
And one of the memories from that game is it
is clear to me now because I'm standing behind the
goal and I can clearly see Harry Cripps pushing Keith
Peacock into the back of the net so that Gordon
Bolland could score. And back in the days when referees
liked to us a bit, I mean that's changed over
(36:36):
the years, as we all know. And another notable game
at the Valley was the two nil in the seventy
one seventy two season, and again like the four three,
there was a twenty seven thousand people there and we
got by just I mean it was one nil right
up until the death, and you never never sure ere
you're at one nil, and then Derrick Posse scored in
the dying seconds to keep us keep us with a
(36:59):
chance of promotion. But we'd already lost three games away
on the spin, so we were running out of Steve
and Birmingham eventually caught us up. But it was a
great season, probably the best ever supporting the Lions, and
it wasn't to be, and we missed out on automatic
promotion by two points. And we all know that feeling,
don't we.
Speaker 8 (37:20):
Unfortunately last year.
Speaker 6 (37:24):
Three points? Last year? Yeah?
Speaker 8 (37:26):
Was it three?
Speaker 13 (37:27):
Maybe?
Speaker 6 (37:28):
Right?
Speaker 17 (37:28):
Well, I'll tell you what, go get a league table
and put two points, two points onto our tite. When
you find it, we'll be in seventh place. The problem
with them, if we're level with Birmingham in those days,
it would have been goal average these days is goal
difference back in back in the seventy one seventy two season,
(37:52):
of course you only got two points for a win.
Speaker 2 (37:57):
Then the other thing each robed rapture to that if
you finished in third place, you'd be in a playoff.
Speaker 7 (38:03):
That's right.
Speaker 17 (38:03):
Yeah, we finished him thirde and we missed out. Yeah,
that hadn't come in I think it was two seasons later. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (38:12):
So but anyway, Hi, Rob, it's mere look at here.
Speaker 6 (38:18):
Yah, Hi, how are you doing?
Speaker 17 (38:20):
You're right all good?
Speaker 5 (38:21):
Yeah?
Speaker 17 (38:22):
Thank you?
Speaker 9 (38:23):
Good to hear Rob Franks for coming on the show today.
It's great to chat with you. I just noticed that
you're out of the Blue Facebook group sponsored one of
our mill Wall linuses last season.
Speaker 7 (38:34):
Are you going to be with UF again this season?
Speaker 17 (38:36):
I don't know for sure about this season. That's all
down to Mike who runs the Out of the Blue
And I missed the sponsors today last season obviously invited to,
but unfortunately I had a long standing commitment with some
American tourists and it would have been nice to have
gone because it was played at the Den and I
can remember, you know, back in the mid nineteen seventies.
(38:59):
We're going to go back a long way again when
back in the day when Gary Stemple and Ron Bell
were running the Milwak community program. It all started back then,
didn't it. Yeah, that's that's when it all started. And
I mean those guys did a great job. We've hardly
any recognition. And back in the early days the team
(39:21):
was very successful and from memory they won the Cup
beat in Doncaster Bells and I know there's been a
lot of problems in recent times and I believe there
was a breakaway club. It was something like the wimwardon
m k Don's fiasco.
Speaker 10 (39:37):
Is that right?
Speaker 8 (39:38):
The London Lions London Lions.
Speaker 17 (39:43):
So it's getting a bit political, isn't it. And I
think the team have gone down the pyramid, but but
you know, hopefully one day they will be back in
the big time.
Speaker 7 (39:54):
Yeah, definitely, definitely.
Speaker 9 (39:56):
By the way, was it a surprised to see a
small boy move from Southampton on the line the transfer.
Speaker 17 (40:01):
Yeah it was because I mean he comes with plenty
of experience at this level and even a higher level,
and when he's fully fit, we'll be Championship ready, you know.
And I believe we've got a great addition to the squad.
I mean people talk about letting George se Will go
too early, but the guy obviously wanted first team football,
(40:22):
which which couldn't be guaranteed, and that's why he was
moved on. And I suppose I was a little bit
disappointed we didn't sign Ryan Wintle. I mean he's playing
regularly now for Cardiff Sydney in League One. He plays
every week. But you know, because I think we just
need someone sometimes just to help us see the game out,
(40:43):
especially when we're holding on to a lead, because we've
got a lot of young stars. But I do like
the look of Dan Kelly as well. Recently, especially since
he's bulked up. But the snow Burniere comes with a
lot of experience and I think that will only bowld
bode well with so many young players around at the moment.
Speaker 8 (41:04):
Indeed, Robert Garry mate, we now of a massive squad
which were just discussing there, but some clean players are
definitely struggling with injuries. I just said, I think you've
just done if you heard. But I think Dallas teas
a huge loss at the moment because he's a fantastic
signing of those joining us as inspired. Who do you
think will were we will actually missed? Do you think
(41:26):
we're miss chain Ganger or not?
Speaker 17 (41:30):
Yeah? But but hang on, Garry, because I think Alfie
Doubty signing was a welcome surprise. I mean because we
know the quality he's got and showed his passion ability
both in pre season and in the Norwich game with
those free balls for McCauley lang start to score. So yeah,
so he would you miss at the moment, But we
knew what we was getting with Josh Coben and Zach Sturge,
(41:53):
but the fact that they were made permanent signings was
a positive as far as I'm concerned, you know, because
so many seasons previously we've had rather too many long players,
haven't we. You know, of the signings, I think the
lad from West brom is very inexperienced at this level.
But apparently, along with one of Charlton's center backs last season,
(42:15):
they were the standout defenders in League One. So I
think again we've got one for the future there, but
he might have to play more of a role depending
on injuries and suspensions as we get through the season.
I'm kind of inspired by the unknown, you know, the
two recent signings of Sacco and Ballot, and I trust
(42:37):
the recruitment team to find young talent. You know, we
won't get it right every time. We've seen that with
the the nesbit lost on the balance sheet. But you know,
I like the policy of signing youngsters. It's more sustainable
and more likely to see us pushing on at this level.
But you know, talking to youngsters, let's have some patience.
(42:58):
You've got to give these boys time. And I saw
it a couple of times last season. I think it
was a Stoke game in particular. That was one particular
game last season. I was over in the duckerstand and
a couple of fellers over there that were really getting
on the backs of the two young you forwards up front.
(43:18):
And you know, I remember when Richard Sadler came into
the team. You know, you didn't tear up the trees
straight away. You've got to be patient, you know, and
you know, to be honest, we overachieved last season. You
wouldn't normally get into eighth place, scoring only forty seven goals,
and the final position kind of flattered us a bit.
(43:38):
So let's have a bit of patience. You know, at
the start of the season, you're looking at the social
media and it's playoffs this and promotion that. You know
you've got to get a grip. You know it's coming,
but it might have been for two or three seasons. Sorry,
I'm sorry to be a spoiler alert, but just a realist.
Speaker 8 (43:57):
Really, I know you you're absolutely You're absolutely right, and
I completely agree with you, Rob, I've heard I was
like listening to Alex Neil today, Ballow is pretty much
ready to be joining the first team from the what
he's done this week.
Speaker 17 (44:13):
So yeah, well I hope so because our predicted he's
going to score the winning go on Saturday.
Speaker 2 (44:18):
A yeah, Rob standing here, mate. I mean just one
thing before. I mean you mentioned the back in August
nineteen sixty eight when we will play Chilton and beaten
for three. And I was at that game, right, and
(44:38):
I well remember it. And one of the reasons I
remember it is because aren't we was a goal down
after about four minutes? Yeah, scored dear player Bobby Kirk.
I think it was Bobby Kurtis. Curtis was his surname.
And from that moment on right now, to me, the
greatest player I've ever seen for Millwall was Keith You're.
Speaker 17 (45:01):
Going to say Keith Weller, Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2 (45:04):
And from the moment re rekicked off that game from
being one nil down, that guy took control of that team.
Speaker 17 (45:11):
Yeah, Suprema. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (45:12):
He was like watching the conductor of a philharmonic orchestra.
He was the players solely responsible, right, And that wasn't
just a one off. I mean, you know as well
as I do. He was absolutely outstanding.
Speaker 17 (45:26):
But anyway, and you know, you know as well as
I do, stand, how do you been in our team
in seventy one seventy two we would have made it
to the Old.
Speaker 2 (45:36):
First absolutely no doubt about that, you know, but yeah,
I mean he wasn't muddy, but I mean, no, that's right.
The other thing I would say briefly before I go
into the question was in nineteen sixty eight, But January
nineteen sixty eight was that. I was there the valley
then and Mulewall lost to Cholton one nil. And that
(45:59):
was the love last time I witnessed, right Millwall losing
to children.
Speaker 17 (46:06):
All right, you were there in the snow where we
lost was in ninety six?
Speaker 2 (46:11):
Was it nineteen sixty eight? It was January?
Speaker 17 (46:15):
Well, yeah, there was, there's one more recent than that,
but I don't remember that one. I wasn't there for that.
Speaker 2 (46:21):
Yeah, but that was the last time I witnessed us
getting beat by Chouldin.
Speaker 17 (46:27):
Oh so you saw us get beat and in January
you're freezing your bollocks off at the same time.
Speaker 2 (46:33):
Well yeah, but you know that's just we were all
younger then. They wouldn't do it now, but we were
younger then anyway. So the question I was going to
ask you mate, Yeah, right, we've we've got to return
the seller's part park on Tuesday. Were your falls ahead
of this Caravell cup tie?
Speaker 17 (46:52):
Well, first of all, I didn't like to draw, and
I'll tell you why because I'll be in Liverpool for
the most of the next week and I was opening
for one of those clubs away and it would have
been nice to have had an early visit to Evan's
new ground, but it wasn't to be. But it's good
news that we've got to the third round because it's
been a while since we've got even that far, and
it's been a long while since we got to the
(47:13):
fourth round. You've got to go all the way back
to nineteen ninety four. I don't know if you remember
staying we knocked Forest out at the City Ground and
then we went on to lose to Swindon. We don't
have we don't go deep in this tournament, do we.
But I've got a sneaky feeling we're going to do
it this time.
Speaker 2 (47:32):
Yeah, But but I suspect that one of the reasons
we've not done well in the tournament before is because
we've had this nonsense approach where well, the league's more
important and all this carry on. And that's not of you.
Speaker 17 (47:47):
I accept, No, I don't. I agree with you, and
I saw a lot of that on social media. Don't
care about the League Cup, don't mind if we get
knocked up. Well, you asked the lads and the under
twenty ones or the squad players. They need minutes. The
coaching staff need them to have minutes, you know. And
getting through two rounds already is a bonus you get.
(48:11):
Oh yeah, of course. But how embarrassing was it last
year we got through the first round? They were lost Warren?
Speaker 2 (48:18):
Oh there you are.
Speaker 17 (48:20):
We didn't turn up, did we for that game? But
I think I think with the coach we got now,
whoever the opponents are, and whatever the competition, I'm pretty
sure we'll turn up.
Speaker 8 (48:32):
Just jumping in there, mate. Was that the Forest game
we just mentioned? Was that the Greg Berry brace?
Speaker 2 (48:38):
Yeah?
Speaker 13 (48:38):
That was it?
Speaker 17 (48:39):
Yeah, Greg Berry? Yeah, it was kind of a one
match wonder Whinnie for us.
Speaker 8 (48:46):
Yeah exactly. Yeah, bless him.
Speaker 17 (48:50):
I think you come from Wimwood and he did.
Speaker 10 (48:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 17 (48:55):
I don't know what happened to him after that, and
we all know what happened at the county ground with
the match with Swindon. It was unfortunate.
Speaker 8 (49:08):
Yeah, just having a look. He left us well alone. No,
that's the other way around. He actually went back to
Leighton Ori in then he retired after us. He must
have got a bad injury.
Speaker 17 (49:23):
It was literally yeah, I seem to remember he had
alongside burns, didn't he. You know, he looked like he's
running down the wing on the phone.
Speaker 8 (49:34):
That's brilliant. That's brilliant, dear, definitely back to you anyway,
were sorry we digressed for it.
Speaker 1 (49:45):
So Mike and yourself are heading for the Isle of
Dogs on the eleventh of October, and it sold out quickly.
How are you going? And when will the next one
take place?
Speaker 13 (49:55):
Right?
Speaker 17 (49:55):
Well, a couple of dates for you. Mike is back
in the community center on the fourth of October for
the West Brom game from about twelve o'clock with the book.
As you said, the eleventh of September, that's sold out.
We're really proud because you know, twelve tours have now
(50:16):
either completely sold out or nearly sold out. And then
the date for the next one. I might have to
look it up sometimes sometime in March. It's talk about yourself, guys,
and I'll look it up. It's always in an international
break and the next one is the twenty eighth of March,
(50:41):
So no, you don't miss any mill War games. Come along.
We have a few laughs. We show people the exact
spot where Milwall played on the Isle of Dogs, and
we end up in the Lord Nelson Pub, which was
one of our headquarters, as most of you guys in
the studio will know, a nice place to finish. Actually,
(51:05):
come along, get some fresh air and learn about the
history and heritage of our great old football club.
Speaker 6 (51:13):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (51:13):
I mean I'd done that last year, that walk and
that was and that was in the international break because
that night England played Brazil. But no, but I mean
that tour. For anyone on this panel that's not been
on it, you want to get on it because it's
well well worth it, well well worth it.
Speaker 17 (51:32):
Thank you, Stan, Well you leave us.
Speaker 1 (51:34):
There is Ted's Prediction League. I am going to ask
you to predict pree scores in the championship and the
best score predictor will be rewarded at the end of
the season. So here we go, Rob, let's make your
predictions for Childton Millwell.
Speaker 17 (51:49):
Oh yeah, well I'm just supposed to say, how do
you see that one go? That's what I said. I
spoke to him in the community center last week actually,
and he's looking and give form. Will he predictions? Chelting Millwill.
Speaker 6 (52:04):
Would you know.
Speaker 17 (52:04):
They've come back with more momentum I think than the
last time, and we'll probably do better than a lot
of our fans can stomach. My head says one one,
but my heart says one. Niil to the Lions, okay.
Speaker 1 (52:19):
And West Brom Derby, Yeah.
Speaker 17 (52:22):
West Brom started well under former lyon Ryan Mason and
could be top six this season. And Derby are in
a familiar position, you know, trying to keep out of
trouble even though early days I'm going for a one
one draw.
Speaker 1 (52:39):
And finally Southampton Portsmouth.
Speaker 17 (52:43):
The south coast Derby didn't. Steve Clarridge used to refer
to Southampton as scummers whatever that means. Pompey could be
the surprise package this season and they're going to win
two one and continue their good start to the season.
Speaker 1 (52:59):
Okay, well, thank you for that, Rob. We look forward
to chatting with you again and enjoy walk in the walk.
All the best to you and your loved ones.
Speaker 17 (53:07):
Bye for now, Thank you and thanks for inviting me on. Guys,
the pleasure is always mine. Thank you see.
Speaker 2 (53:15):
Later, yees, Rob Jeers, bye.
Speaker 1 (53:21):
And we will take another break there and listen to
myself explain how you can support the mill Will Community Trust.
The Millwall Community Trust something that I Bethany Magtelow, admire
for all that it does. The Trust was established in
nineteen eighty five works to provide sporting, education, social and
healthy lifestyle opportunities to the local community in Southwark, Lewisham,

sexual orientation, and run programs aimed at tackling social exclusion, racism,
knife crime, lack of employment, opportunities for young people, mental
health and disability issues. The Trust aims to be a

progressive and campaigning charity that makes a difference to ordinary

This week seedl has launched free mental health help hub
in support of World Suicide Prevention Day UK, which was yesterday.
This week, CEDIA has taking a powerful step in support
of suicide prevention, a cause deeply rooted in the organizedization's values.
(55:49):
In recognitions of Suicide Prevention Day UK, Seedel has proudly
announced as the launch of a new website www dot
mental health help dot co dot UK. I'll say that
again Www dot mental health help dot co dot UK,
a free public hub for mental wellness designed to support individuals, families,
(56:11):
and communities. Unlike Sidel's workplace focusing training platform, the Mental
Health Hub is open to everyone. It offers vital resources
for those who may not otherwise have access to mental
health support. Included guided relaxations, suicide prevention training, safeguarding resources,
mental health first aid content. All resources are completely free
(56:34):
and accessible to anyone in need. This initiative is very
close to our hearts. If it saves just one life,
it will already be a success. But together we can
achieve so much more. CEDO invites everyone to explore the
new platform and share with its colleagues, friends and family.
By working together, we can build a more informed, compassionate
and resilient community. For more information, as mentioned earlier, please
