Originally from New Zealand but having studied 6 years of Japanese at School it was inevitable that Mike Harris would end up in Japan – with a passion for Outdoor Adventure Mike began his career in Hakuba but by chance ended up in the Outlier town of Minakami – after struggling for acceptance as a six-foot-tall gaijin with red dreadlocks Mike would often get a few strange looks (and the odd rock thrown at him for good measure) as he careered down the rapids as a rafting guide.
After 18 years of trying to fit into an ancient culture, Mike’s perseverance has paid off as he now owns the largest Outdoor Adventure company in Japan, is the chairman of the tourism body and consults to the Japanese Government.
