Paranormal Punches is part of the PodbellyNetwork. Go to podbelly dot com for
more great podcast Hey, y'all, this is Frank the Bigfoot and you're listening
to the Paranormal Punchers. Hey,friends, welcome to a special episode of
(00:34):
Paranormal Punchers. I'm Mark, I'mAlicia, and we have a very special
guest with us. You may knowhim from the caught hit movie The Room.
He wrote the book The Disaster Artist, and now he's working on a
alien movie UFO abduction movie set inRoswell called Forbidden Sky. Greg Cistero,
(00:56):
Welcome to the show. Hey,thanks for having me. Yeah, resolutely,
yeah. I was excited to seeyou were working on the I saw
your kickstarter an alien movie, andI'm so excited to hear all about this.
Yeah, I so, I obviouslyrepeal, I don't know. I
was in a movie twenty years agocalled The Room that's become like a cult,
a cult movie around the world. It's known as the greatest bad movie
(01:19):
ever made, and it's if youget just to see with an audience,
you got to you gotta give ita shot. There's flying spoons, it's
it's crazy. And then I wrotea book called The Disaster Artist about my
experience, which became a good filmthat came out in twenty eighteen that won
a Golden Globe. And then Ilove horror movies, I love paranormal,
(01:40):
I love UFOs. So I decidedI was going to go out and start
writing and producing my own movies. And I made a cult horror movie called
Miracle Valley, which is based ona real life cult in the Arizona Desert
that traffics people based on their bloodtype. So Miracle Valley is a true
story. Was released last year. And then during that time, during the
pandemic, I was living in theArizona Desert where there's been a lot of
(02:04):
UFO activity, a lot of socalled abductions. There's one of my favorite
movies called Fire in the Sky,in which took place in um Snowflake,
Arizona. So I went up toSedona and I took a night tour.
It's called UFO night Tour. Yougo out with night vision goggles and there's
this they break down the sky becausethere's in that vortex, there's so much
UFO activity. And during that time, I just got this idea to make
(02:29):
this movie, which it's sort ofit's a it's a really crazy story because
it's about a smalltown radio host whomlives in a in a trailer in Roswell
in Mexico, and he hosts thisconspiracy late night show like like an art
bell. But this guy is soout there because he used to be an
(02:51):
actor and he was in a reallybad sci fi TV show that got canceled
quickly. But to him, hethought the show really meant something and it
was telling people what's coming in thefuture. He's like, people just don't
get it. So he never letgo of his character that he played on
the show. He really thought thatwas his calling, so he's kept that
character alive. He's alienated his family, you know, daughter doesn't want to
(03:14):
speak to him, and he's hostingthe show which has no callers. But
late one night he's doing he's setup this antenna that he thinks is going
to reach other planets, and thatnight he gets a call from an alien
race that's trying to reach Earth andthey only want to speak to him.
So now all of a sudden, this reality is he is now an important
(03:34):
figure and he's got to like takeon this challenge. So it's sort of
a the movie is its shared languageis sort of a Galaxy quest, firing
the sky ex Machina, sort oflike I don't know, tying in that
eighties ambulant vibe, practical effects, really telling a story that would be fun
to get people to go back tothe theater and watch it. You know,
(03:55):
there's comedy, there's horror, there'sa little bit of everything. But
I really draw from personal inspiration fromtraveling and weird experiences, and the whole
UFO thing just came to me whileI was literally looking into it during the
pandemic. Yeah, that's awesome. So you wrote it, Are you going
to direct it? Yeah? Andthen we're looking at you know, it's
(04:15):
kind of open right now. We'reseeing what options we have and we just
want to make the most fun,fun movie we can, so we'll see
how that comes together. I know, we we're looking for for some cool
cameos, like, um, there'san action named Neal Brain, which is
pretty far out. So our listof cameos is pretty wild, but it
just depends how we how we doUm, now you your kickstarters live.
(04:38):
Um, I think everybody got likeone hundred and one hundred and fifty backers
that updated just why we were hangingout here, and you got some really
unique tears that people can get.I mean, and you really leaning into
the room you got I think itlooks like you have some lego action figures.
Well they're yeah, the disasters ofthe book and the disaster starts.
(05:00):
There's alternate storylines and so we kindof are celebrating the rooms twenty anniversary.
So we have these really cool likevampire flying cars. I also when I
was twelve, I wrote a scriptcalled Home Alone Lost in Disney World.
That was a sequel that I pitchedat John Hughes. I found the script
and that's one of the rewards aswell. And I love physical media.
I love like holding a Blu Rayand T shirts. So we have what
(05:23):
we're going to create a Blu rayand a vinyl and all that stuff for
UFO lovers and all that. Wehave a really great um composers names Dan
Plasman from Imagine Dragons who's going todo the music as well. So it's
really um it's just a chance toinvolve fans. I want to give a
chance for people to be on setand who be part of Zoom calls and
production, how a movie gets made. I mean, they're they've supported us
(05:45):
for twenty years now with The Roomand the Disaster Artist, so it's really
sort of a celebration of indie film. And I can't you know, I've
been scouting White Sands, New Mexicoand El Paso, Texas and all these
great places, and just the shootinglocations are so in firing and so much
fun that I can't wait to bringthe story to life. Yeah, I
can't wait to back it as aas a short filmmaker. I was excited
(06:09):
getting to see this, but Iwant to participate in the Kickstar just so
I could see some behind the scenesand you know, get inspired hopefully.
Yeah. I mean, so youknow what this all, this whole journey
started twenty years ago. I hadbeen in a few few movies and my
friend Tommy at Stream was to bean actor director and he nobody was casting,
(06:29):
nobody was saying, hey, wesee something in you. So he
decided he was going to make hisown movie, and he's like, you
got to be in it. Andit's just a crazy story. It's the
power of having an idea and fallingthrough on it. I think so many
times we have this goal or thesethoughts and we think, ah, you
know, who's gonna want to seethis, or where's it going to go?
And The Room was a great exampleof that. It really had no
chance to succeed. I mean,if you really look at it back in
(06:49):
that time, and here we aretwenty years later, it's selling out movie
theaters around the world. I wasI've been all over the world at this
point, especially this year, andpeople love this movie and it just teaches
me like, hey, the creativespirit and is so important, and when
you have a passion for something, the journey is the most fun part.
You know, we make a movie, we have no idea what's going to
(07:11):
turn out. But there's no thrilllike making a film with a band of
brothers and people who who are creativeas well, and it's really the time
of your life. And then andI think, if you have a story
you want to tell, get outthere and make it. You don't know
what's going to come of it,but it's a great feeling to accomplish a
goal. I usually ask our guestany any words of advice or inspiration,
(07:32):
but you just did it, sothat's awesome. Yeah, and speaking of
you traveling around with the show inthe movie The Room, do any qna
you? I mean, you gottaup and down the East Coast, I
guess come up here the next coupleof months. I'm doing Fan Expo Philadelphia
tomorrow night. I'm doing Phoenixville,Pennsylvania at the Blob, the theater where
(07:56):
they shot The Blob in Phoenixville,Pensylvania on Saturday night, and then um
yeah, back to Philly. I'mgonna be in Altuna, Pennsylvania for the
Sci Fi Valley Con. I don'tknow I got booked for that. I
hadn't even announced him doing a UFOmovie. Maybe the the Aliens are ahead
of the game. And now I'mdoing Yeah, but just a bunch of
shows throughout the rest of this year, on and off between The Room and
(08:18):
also promoting Forbidden Sky and then showingmy horror film Miracle Valet. Yeah,
that's awesome. You were actually inHarrisburg a few months ago at the what
is it? At the Cinema MidtownCetown Cinema, which is only like twenty
minutes from us. I was justhaving Yeah, I was out of town
and I missed it. I waspretty sad about that. So I'm gonna
(08:39):
be doing a show at the Mahoningdrive In on June eleventh, Okay,
not too far from there. It'sa really cool it's one of the coolest
drive ins in the country, andwe're doing showing the room on thirty five
millimeter UM, which will be whichwill be crazy. So um, if
you're not around for that one, that would be great. If not,
I'm sure I'll come find you, hopefully people around where wherever you're up.
Now, with the one at thedrive in, there you could do a
(09:01):
Q and A also Q and Ayet which is beamed up. We shoot
it on camera and it's beamed upon the big screen and it's also the
audio is in all the cars aswell. Awesome cool. Now getting back
to aliens. You mentioned you travelaround the country, you know the paranormal.
Have you ever had a paranormal experience? I have, so I haven't.
(09:24):
I lived in this house. Itwas built in eighteen eighty five in
South Pasadena, California. It lookedvery cool, very an old Victorian style.
Was built near the railroad which wasnow a metro Metro. Small metro
line moved in there. I wasreally excited with my girlfriend at the time,
(09:45):
and I had to go to Swedenfor work, and so she moved
in. It was supposed to bea really happy time, and she's like,
there's something wrong with this place.I'm like, you gotta be kidding
me. You wanted this place.I got it for you, now why.
It was just like I couldn't win. She's like, I hear scratching.
I just feel there's something going on. So anyway, she was so
(10:05):
scared of the place that she couldn'tstay there without me, And I'm like,
I got back. I come in. I expect the way she described
I expected like ghosts to be dancingin this house. I come back,
I see nothing, and things kindof die out for a little bit.
And then like a month and ahalf later, it's around two thirty in
the morning and I'm out and she'sshaking me, and she's like, did
(10:28):
you hear that? Wake up?Wake up? Oh my god, Oh
my god. She's flipping out.I'm like what She's like, there's somebody
laughing in the basement. Oh god. And I'm like what She's like,
listen, listen. He just startedlaughing. And I was like, what
it was so creepy the way shesaid it had to be real because she
heard it, and so she wasjust so convinced there was something really wrong
(10:52):
with this place. So we calledout a paranormal professional to come out at
night, and they did a wholething and they were communicating with the ghosts.
This is at one o'clock in themorning, and they're like, there
was a presence here, and we'respeaking to it, and they were saying
that the spirit was telling them thatit was disturbed because we'd gotten a new
(11:13):
kitten, so it was disturbed bythe kitten. And that's why I was
laughing. It was like interacting, there's too much noise, and I was
like, that's really creepy. Sothey came up with more things that were
really disturbing. I think some timehad passed and it's sort of Then there
was a cigarette smell in the laundryroom. None of us smoke. It
(11:35):
was clear cigarette smell, which isanother sign of a haunting. Apparently,
then it sort of died out.We forgot about it, and then October
came around again the next year andthe same crap started happening, and she
kept saying she's sensing things she's feelingthings. Our cat got really sick and
then cannot understand what was wrong withit. They had no idea. We
(11:56):
did all these tests. It hada fever that would not go away.
It was really bizarre. And shehad this paranormal app that could get sounds
and have them be transcribed, andshe said one of them came through and
one of the voices said, isyour cat dead? And I'm like this,
this is creepy, man, thisis what next? So we ended
(12:18):
up breaking up. Shocker. Ithought she was cut off. Her mom
thought maybe maybe she's got like she'sa schizophrenic or something. I don't know.
So we moved out, moved on. I ended up making this movie
called Best Friends while we were livingthere, which was cool. And then
a friend of mine we were makingthe movie, and then the filmmakers left
(12:39):
to back to their city and abuddy of mine came over who had been
working on the film, and hebrought his daughter, who was like two
or three, and he walked inand he's like into the kitchen, he's
like, oh, where are theguys. I'm like, oh, they
left last week. He's like really, because I could have sworn I just
turned voices, and I was like, oh, and then it hit me
(13:07):
he had a little infant. Sowhenever there seemed to be a youth,
there was a response, there wasvoices, there was interaction. Then I
always felt a little awkward. Atnight. It was very, very like
it was a bigger house, andjust at night I'd feel kind of weird.
I don't know if you were littlethings. It was in my mind,
but it wasn't until my mom cameto visit. It was big into
paranormal. She was sleeping on thecouch and she heard the back door rattling
(13:33):
like NonStop, and she said,at first she thought my my ex girlfriend
was crazy, but then she's like, there's definitely something here. And then
it was so I decided we finishedthe movie. I was moving out and
the old neighbor I walked around backtold me, did you know that place
is haunted? Oh god, shesaid. She was an older woman.
(13:56):
I'm like what She's like, ohyeah. Things would go missing all the
time, and it became a joke. So the house is built in eighteen
eighty five, and it was justone of those things that was so eerie
that I went from going Okay, she's she's clearly off to there's really something
there and it was really terrifying. The laughter in the basement is something that
(14:18):
stayed with me to this day.How do you explain that? Yeah,
I don't know, got to besome energy there that has been um and
did you know to really how todescribe that? Do you think that would
ever inspire you know, a scriptor anything you might put into a movie.
(14:41):
Yeah. Work. I Actually it'sbeen a little bit of that is
in Forbidden Sky in the UFO movie, because there's just moments of that creepiness
that I'm trying to recreate. Awesome. So, okay, you believe in
ghosts, I assume you believe inaliens. Yeah, the movie kind of
goes into a little bit both sides. I'm about with the character's journey.
(15:03):
So there's so much out there.I've listened to so many different studies and
podcasts and from every every end youcould think of um And it feels like
the more I know, the moreI'm confused. It's pretty fascinating. That's
what keeps it, you know, keeps it all so interesting. Absolutely,
what about Bigfoot? I was upin Eureka, I was up in Bigfoot
(15:26):
Country, in January. And theway we're designing the character's trailer and Forbidden
Sky is he has all those Iwant to believe bigfoot hunters and all that
stuff. Yeah, I was upin the thick of it. I mean
every gas station will pull off tohis photos and Bigfoot and everything, and
I think there's something really interesting there. Again, it could be that a
(15:48):
lot of pot smokers up there, they were they saw something go down and
they were like totally freaked out.Um. So I loved I love the
idea of the unknown, and Ithink it's just something that it's always cool
to keep an open mind and keepexploring. And because it's it's sort of
boring if there's nothing, you know, it's always cool to be on the
look up or something. Yeah, totally agree. That's why we do the
(16:10):
show. Now. I know you'rebusy, man, you got a lot
to do. But you know,if you don't mind indulging me as a
fan of the Room, is thereany like crazy story or anything that just
went down on set that would youknow, be funny for all the fans
to hear. Well, the storyI always kind of stick to is.
I mean, the making of theRoom is every day was as surprise as
(16:32):
you can tell from Safe, butone of the ones I really love it
was sort of late late in theshoot. Everyone was like sort of you
know, burnt out, and Tommywas lying on the floor inside the camera
equipment rental shop and he's like, yeah, I have to do it.
And I was like what now,It's like I have to show my ass
(16:52):
to sell this movie, and like, oh oh, because we're shooting the
sex scenes. I was like,so you think I should do it.
James Dean would do it, Ishould do it, And I was like,
you know, yeah, tell mego for it. And I was
thinking like maybe he'd contemplate or howhe would do it, but he literally
went back out we were going tofilm the bed scenes. He had to
sheet cover him, he had asock on this thing, and then he
(17:18):
literally walked out, totally naked, went for it, and the entire crew
was like whoa, Like no warningit was. It was really it was
incredible and just that I'd seen alot to that point, but that moment
I just I burst in the laughterin a way that I was like,
this is this is amazing. Igot to be sort of the first fan
of the craziness of the room.Well, I hope I get to catch
(17:42):
it live and get to catch oneof your Q and a's about it.
I'm very excited to be able tothrow some spoons. I guess all right.
It's really seeing the movie in atheater with a crowd. It's just
such a different experience. Like whenI was in Harrisburg, I did a
little bit of live commentary, soI talked a little bit through the film,
and that audience is just so cleverand the stuff they come up with,
(18:04):
the energy in there is just it'sunlike anything any other movie experience.
And this weekend you're down in Phillyfor the Fan Expo, and we go
there every year and said, wehave another event to go to this weekend,
so I won't be able to seeyou. Then we were there last
year and did a live performance, but not this year, so that's another
bomber. But this is still greatto be able to talk to you via
(18:27):
technology. I'm excited to back yourkickstarter. And when do you think to
film you know, be ready foreverybody to see and why starting filming early
next year. We're gonna be filminga few different locations and like I said,
we're giving a chance for any moviego or any aspiring actor finding producer
or a chance for them to bea part of the film with different tiers.
(18:49):
We're gonna try to film in Icelandif we can, but the movie
set in Roswell, New Mexico. And we're also doing like a Blu ray,
We're doing a digital screener um,and just a lot of yeah,
a lot of cool things. Andagain, this is sort of a celebration
of independent filmmaking for anybody who wantsto be a part of it. I
think is the goal with this projectis to make a really fun UFO movie.
(19:11):
Yeah, hell yeah. Tell everybodywhere they can go find this and
learn more and back. Oh I'mon social media. I'm at Greg Cistero.
I just joined TikTok or something Inever thought I would do. I
think it's at Greg Sister, Gregsister Official, whatever the hell that means.
And Forbidden Sky dot com is theKickstarter link. If you go on
(19:36):
Kickstarter, it's there, it's ForbiddenSky. And yeah, if you're you
know anybody who's interested, Um,if you're interested in UFOs, we'd love
to have your support. UM.And the goals again, to go out
and make something that we can allwatch together. And you know, I
don't know about throwing spoons at thescreen, but uh, we'll figure something
(19:56):
out, maybe small little spaceships orsomething nice. But yeah, I know
it's um. You know, it'sbeen a really cool journey, and you
know the passion really is at thispoint, it's telling stories and making fun
movies. Perfect. That's what Iwant to do, right, So thank
you for taking the time to tellus all about the movie. Some of
(20:18):
the funny things you've experienced in yourlife as some of the creepy things you
experienced in your life. I greatlyappreciate it. Greg, Thank you so
much and I look forward to talkingto you soon anytime. Thanks so much
for supporting everything. And I'm surewe'll see each other in person really soon.
And hopefully that ghost doesn't come backto Halming. Yeah, I hope
not. Take care of Greg.Thank you appreciate it.
