Speaker 1 (00:03):
Welcome to the Parenting Roundabout podcast. I'm Terry Morrow and
I'm Catherine Jileco. As parents and parenting writers, we can't
help but see everything through a parenting lens. But as
our kids have become adults, we find ourselves more interested
in getting caught up on movies and streaming than I'm
going over the same parenting topics over and over.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
So since we're pretty sure we can find parenting wisdom anywhere,
we're going to talk about what we're watching, what we
thought about it, and maybe what we can learn from it,
if only what not to do. Watch and listen along,
and let's all make like we're doing something important for
our families.
Speaker 1 (00:40):
Each Tuesday, we bring you a watch or rewatch of
an older entertainment property, And for this week of September eighth,
we're continuing with Lost season three episode fifteen Left Behind,
which was yet another k flashback episode, made slightly more
interesting by a little overlap with Sawyer's timeline.
Speaker 2 (01:03):
Yes, so.
Speaker 1 (01:06):
His the woman he conned and later found out had
had his child, Uh, turns out to meet Kate somewhere
along the line and have a little interlude. Yes helped her,
helped her try to talk to her mom, which was
once again a mistake. And boy that mom kept her
(01:28):
promise because the next time she saw Kate she did
yell for help. So what.
Speaker 2 (01:35):
Yes you deal lady. I in the other flashbacks of
Kate h that you know, discussed this this situation, I
thought that the stepdad had been abusive to Kate as well.
Speaker 1 (01:54):
I think that's Dade crack yeah, actually the dad, but
playing the stepdad, right, I think.
Speaker 2 (02:06):
Because you know, she kept making a point of saying,
like he hit my mom. He you know, I did
this for her, yes, But that wasn't the impression I
got the other time.
Speaker 1 (02:16):
Well, the impression I got was always that that she
superficially did it for her mom. She got the insurance
thing for her mom that she was and she thought
her mom would be happy.
Speaker 2 (02:29):
Right.
Speaker 1 (02:30):
But it also seemed to me that one could interpret
that he abused her as well. So I think that's
not a I mean, I don't remember at all from
my past viewing, but I think from the recent episodes
we've seen, I think that interpretation is open to okay,
those who wish to have it. But you know, from
(02:52):
a parenting point of view, you know, it's not that
you have to stick with your kid no matter what
over anybody else, but you may this situation, lady, she
didn't become this person who kills somebody just all on
her own. Right, What were you doing? What were you
up to? Does your well I love him even though
(03:13):
he's horrible, justify your kid getting this messed up? I
don't think so. She is just completely absolving herself of
any responsibility whatsoever, and that Kate is just bad and
deserves whatever she gets. And I loved him.
Speaker 2 (03:30):
Yeah, you don't.
Speaker 1 (03:31):
Get off that easily. Parents. Here's a tip. You had
a responsibility to that child which you did not care
to fulfill in any way. Right, So she doesn't excuse
what Kate did. But on the other hand, she didn't
do it by herself. Yeah, somebody made mean she did.
She did in the moment, but she didn't get to
(03:52):
that point exactly. You know. So consider your actions and
how they may act your child, and consider them before
you judge your child's actions. Right. I think that sort
of thing a lot. Not that we ever had anybody
burn anybody alive or anything, but you know what, let
(04:15):
me review my past parenting behaviors and see if any
of them impact on this particular situation. I spent a
lot of time in that reflection. So maybe Kate's mom's
got the right idea responsibility one may, one may. It
was all you, sweetie, all you. I was just in
(04:35):
the room. I had nothing to do with anything. I
don't know. Yeah, but me a little less introspection Kate's
mom a little more, is all I'm saying.
Speaker 2 (04:45):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (04:46):
Meanwhile, so the whole the left behind was that the
others high tailed it for some other place, and they
gassed the people they did not want to come with them,
which included Jack and Kate and Sayid and Juliette. Hmmm,
(05:07):
completely just didn't want her anymore, needed a fertility specialist,
got no more women to be fertile, So we're out
of here, goodbye. Why would they trust her even a
little bit? I don't know. Yeah, I feel like she
was very been in the balloonish in this episode. Right,
(05:33):
they love me?
Speaker 2 (05:34):
I have no idea. Why why would they do that?
I can't imagine.
Speaker 1 (05:38):
Yeah, I'm I'm just a normal person like you guys.
Speaker 2 (05:41):
Right, yeah, yeah, definitely sus And then she did a
fairly convincing like I've never seen this Smoke Monster.
Speaker 1 (05:53):
Act until she then shut it down.
Speaker 2 (05:57):
Until right and until it became quite clear that she
knew all about the Smoke Monster and how to scare
it away with their horrible fence.
Speaker 1 (06:07):
I wonder if last week in the Nikki and Polo episode,
and by the way, apparently I was wrong, they did
talk about him in this episode, so they got talked
about it at least one more time. Yeah, but I
wonder if that little scene we made fun of in
the Hatch, when Paula is hiding in the bathroom and
Juliet and Ben come through and have a chat. I
(06:28):
wonder if that's to make us understand that Juliette is
in on everything and not just somebody who got kidnapped
and brought there and is you know, might as well
come over to the Castaways because she's an innocent. I
think that was maybe to let us know, yeah, she's
she's in on this whole thing, and do not trust
her great, which we probably would have done it, not
(06:51):
trusted her anyway. But still they seem pretty quick too. Yes,
what could possibly be their motive for planting somebody with
the Castaways?
Speaker 2 (07:04):
I have no idea.
Speaker 1 (07:05):
Well, Sawyer has learned some lessons on ingratiating himself with
the with the population, so maybe he can pass them
on to her. Yeah, kill, kill a bore and give
the baby a present, and you're you're in.
Speaker 3 (07:22):
That.
Speaker 1 (07:25):
I would him, like, what.
Speaker 2 (07:29):
Who you?
Speaker 1 (07:31):
That was? That was some pretty next level of manipulation
by Hurley. He has leadership skills. I think he was
showing his leadership skills there by just completely manipulating Sawyer,
his chosen leader, into place. Yes, nicely done, man, And uh,
(07:54):
you know they have a point. If I had to
like catch my own fish, I would, similar to the Sawyer,
have absolutely no idea what to do with it once
I got Yeah, even if you can catch it, it's like, oh, okay,
now what Yeah?
Speaker 2 (08:13):
Yeah, Well, as I believe we've discussed, you know, any
any sort of apocalyptic situation, I'm just I'm just dead.
Speaker 1 (08:24):
I'm not yeah.
Speaker 2 (08:24):
Yeah, I'm not trying even.
Speaker 1 (08:28):
Bring on the spiders and bury me alive.
Speaker 2 (08:30):
Yes, I'm out. I just can't so.
Speaker 1 (08:34):
Yeah, yeah, there's no way. Yeah, friend, people who are fishermen, yes,
and know how to do things hunters.
Speaker 2 (08:44):
Desmond gets a minute. Yep, they've kind of left behind.
Speaking of the title, the whole plot of Charlie's gonna die, right, Well,
I know it's going to come back, but it hasn't.
They've they've had other things to do.
Speaker 1 (09:01):
For Desmond's just keeping his foreshadowings to himself. Now, yes, no,
And you know that whole that whole Sawyer plot was
parenting tip wise. Sometimes you can con someone into behaving.
(09:25):
We've all done it with your child, with your child.
If you think about it, you can find a way
to make them think it's their idea and what they want.
So that's a good skill to have in your skill set, right.
Speaker 2 (09:43):
I mean, as we talked about in the Ping Pong episode,
Sawyer is meant to be a con man. But yes,
this is the second time he's fallen hook line and
sinker for something Hurly dreamed of. It took all almost
nothing for Herly to be like, Okay, this is what
you do? You know, And he's just like.
Speaker 1 (10:07):
He's got some uh, he's got some skills. Good for him.
He's showing a whole new side to himself.
Speaker 2 (10:17):
Yeah, I guess, I don't know, maybe he's not feeling
so cursed anymore, or I guess kind of realizing that
he's kind of unkillable, so he.
Speaker 1 (10:28):
Can do whatever you want. That's true. Everybody around him
not so much. But right, and uh, there's lots of
uh Kate and Juliet back and forth about Jack, right,
they both like the same boy. I don't know, it's
(10:49):
really got. He's pretty messed up. I don't think I
know well.
Speaker 2 (10:53):
And also we already had like a love triangle with Kate,
Jack and Sawyer. Now we need a different love triangle
with Jack, Kate and Julie head.
Speaker 1 (11:03):
Like, yeah, the kind of exhausted my says. Mostly I
think setting up chess pieces for the next little run. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (11:21):
Literally, Juliet is a pawn exactly. I mean, I don't
know if she's a pawn. She has she has agency,
but yes, she's clearly a game piece that is being
put into place.
Speaker 1 (11:34):
Right right, What is their game? Now? Those pesky others?
You know. One thing that came to my mind about
this is that if you have to I don't know,
get ready for a vacation or plan for something, or
you have a lot of work to do, or you
need to just move people one from one to the
place to another as quickly as possible, you could just
(11:55):
gas people. That's really or do you get where would
we get something like that? I wonder, just like.
Speaker 2 (12:03):
Do you remember I have talked about in my on
this podcast. I don't remember when, but if I had
a superpower, it would be to put people to sleep
and put myself to sleep when I needed it, Yeah,
and wake them up when I needed it. And that's basically.
Speaker 1 (12:24):
That. This is like a very a very tangible means
of that superpower. Yeah, the others have some idea to
people management.
Speaker 3 (12:33):
I need to acquire some of that stuff puts you
out for a decent length of time, but you know,
enough time for everybody else to skid atle but doesn't
apparently do you any harm otherwise.
Speaker 2 (12:48):
And somehow it works differently for Kate and Juliet than
it does worright. I guess Juliette was faking the whole time.
But yeah, said and Jack are out for like an
additional twenty four to thirty six hours. So yeah, these
big strong dudes I guess are just affected.
Speaker 1 (13:07):
Well I wondered about that they wouldn't have a faster metabolism.
Maybe I don't know, I know they got it. They
maybe gave the guys two canisters. Still no no damage,
no permanent damage whatsoever. Just it's like if they had
one of those spiders that instead of paralyzing like you're dead,
(13:30):
just kind of lets you take a really long nap. Yeah,
very sound sweeping nap. Yes, but you have a pulse
and everything.
Speaker 2 (13:37):
It's fine, right, And like when Jack wakes up, he's
all like, can't really walk, you know, he's Kate has
to practically carry him.
Speaker 1 (13:47):
But when Kate woke up.
Speaker 2 (13:50):
She was fine, yes, and said, does seem to be okay?
Speaker 1 (13:54):
He just strolls up he was. They really wanted to
knock Jack out. They were just tired of that dude.
Everybody else Eh, Yeah, that's a that's a handy dandy item.
And I wonder why they didn't use it more right,
Maybe they had a limited supply, yes, but of all
(14:19):
but the last few canisters.
Speaker 2 (14:20):
Knowing knowing Ben, I'm sure he has other methods or
the means to produce more gas, you know.
Speaker 1 (14:28):
Oh yes, I would never. I would never put anything
out of Ben's ability, right, the talented dude.
Speaker 2 (14:37):
And as we know, like they no longer have a
submarine to get off this island, so well, they don't
longer have that some that I'm like they have a bunker.
But that's what I'm thinking. There's some other.
Speaker 1 (14:50):
There's a fleet off off shore a little.
Speaker 2 (14:54):
Bit right, and are they leaving the island or are
they just going elsewhere? Upon on the island, where are
they going? What are they? Yep, And I was going
back to again what you were saying about the episode,
the previous episode with Nikki and Powell.
Speaker 1 (15:15):
I guess, you know, a.
Speaker 2 (15:16):
Few little sort of breadcrumbs. They also showed us Ethan,
who we haven't seen in a long time, at the
time when he was hiding amongst the others. So that's
a little like Juliette might be.
Speaker 1 (15:34):
Yeah, I think that they are certainly giving us a
lot of reasons not to trust her, right in addition
to just the fact that she seems untrustworthy. We've seen
this before. All the other guys are forgetting it.
Speaker 2 (15:54):
But yeah, I guess they've been a little busy on
that island.
Speaker 1 (16:00):
I mean, if she knows how to stop the smoke Monster,
I think that alone might you might want to keep
her around.
Speaker 2 (16:05):
Yeah, but you need to be near that, you need
to be really, that's going to be a problem.
Speaker 1 (16:12):
Hortifying monster is scared of a little fence, buddy, you
disappoint us.
Speaker 2 (16:23):
That was pretty cool. It just stop. But yeah, you're right,
too easy.
Speaker 1 (16:31):
Too easy. Oh well, he just doesn't like Juliette, he said,
oh her, it was her out here.
Speaker 2 (16:39):
I don't want to throw her up in a tree killer.
Speaker 1 (16:45):
I don't know. That's that's such an interesting character because
you know, she was sort of victimized when she was
brought there, and now it's like hard to know how
on the up and up she is. Sometimes she seems
like she's just one of them, and then sometimes it
seems like she's super sneaky. Right on this show, I
will tend to believe the super sneaky.
Speaker 2 (17:07):
The sneaky side, Yeah, yeah, caring.
Speaker 1 (17:11):
About where her storyline goes, and it's very hard not
to think about it. So true. Yeah, Oh well not
there yet.
Speaker 2 (17:25):
No, we got what two and a half more seasons
three and a half two? Yes, but it goes to six,
doesn't it?
Speaker 1 (17:35):
Yes, I believe so. Yeah, but it's even half interesting.
I think we're just are we kind of just starting
to get the situations where we find that these people's
timelines overlapped, or that people from from one person's life, yeah,
from another person's life. There's obviously going to be more
(17:57):
of that coming, but it's well, I guess we did
have Jack's dad having a drink with Sawyer and then traveling.
Speaker 2 (18:05):
Also Jack's dad being Claire's dad.
Speaker 1 (18:09):
That's right, yes, so yeah we are. We're starting to
get now into the to the overlaps. And if only
they know that's my sister, Kate could have brought Sawyer
a message. Now he knows about the baby, so you know.
But anyway, interesting, Yeah, And wasn't.
Speaker 2 (18:33):
There like a minute where Sawyer was in the diner
where Kate's mom right right, yes, at some point, so yeah,
everything is connected.
Speaker 1 (18:48):
Well, next week we will see how things are connecting
in the season three episode sixteen. One of ours us?
Who is that a flashback? Those Juliette flashbacks?
Speaker 2 (19:05):
I forgot already. I looked it up.
Speaker 1 (19:10):
Juliet yep, is she really one of us? Who is
she one of one of us or one of the others?
Or is she have her own band in the jungle?
She is a smoke monster and Vincent and some other
(19:33):
jungle creature, the cat from the little farm.
Speaker 2 (19:36):
Oh yeah, running through the polar bear.
Speaker 1 (19:39):
The polar bear. Yeah, I don't know.
Speaker 2 (19:41):
If they killed all the polar Bears are just one
or two.
Speaker 1 (19:44):
There could totally be another polar Bear. Yeah, for sure,
I would not be surprised at all. So next Tuesday,
season three, episode sixteen of Lost and Tomorrow we will
discuss the Gilded Age, where there are no polar Bears.
It's some really scary society people. Scary mother. Oh my gosh,
(20:09):
get an electric fence for her. I think Peggy's gonna
need one. We've surrounded our lovely mansion with electricity. Lady,
let us know when you're coming. Thank you for listening.
