Speaker 1 (00:03):
Welcome to the Parenting Roundabout podcast. I'm Terry Morrow and
I'm Catherine Jileco. As parents and parenting writers, we can't
help but see everything through a parenting lens. But as
our kids have become adults, we find ourselves more interested
in getting caught up on movies and streaming than I'm
going over the same parenting topics over and over.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
So since we're pretty sure we can find parenting wisdom anywhere,
we're going to talk about what we're watching, what we
thought about it, and maybe what we can learn from it,
if only what not to do. Watch and listen along,
and let's all make like we're doing something important for
our families.
Speaker 1 (00:39):
Each Tuesday, we bring you a watch or rewatch of
an older entertainment property. And for this week of September
twenty ninth, we are continuing with Lost season three, episode
eighteen DOC, which stands for Date of Conception, and it's
about Sun and Gin and who is the father of
(01:01):
the baby that is going to kill Son? It's Gin.
It's so no pressure. But this seemed to me, even
though it involved people we know from the beginning, this
was still kind of a filler, wasn't it. I mean,
I feel like the theme of this was people lie
to Gin. A lot of people have been lying to
(01:22):
Gin for a long time. Since Jin was a baby,
people have been lying to Gin, and right up to
the present time, people are still lying to Gin. Seems
like a nice fellow. I feel kind of bad for it. Yeah,
thank you for that flashback, just to remind us, right, Yeah, yeah,
I mean it is porschmuck.
Speaker 2 (01:44):
It advanced the story of Son and Gin by like
one inch. It did yes and no and not in
a way.
Speaker 1 (01:53):
That we probably could have figured out if they had
not spent an hour of television on it.
Speaker 2 (01:58):
Right, or that doesn't really matter? Like why it is
that he had to work for her dad like we
already thought it was because that's how he got her
dad to let him marry her, And it turns out
it was a little more nuanced than that. Okay, but
does that matter in any reasonable way?
Speaker 1 (02:19):
It doesn't hard to think that it does.
Speaker 2 (02:22):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (02:23):
And also, I just I don't think I had this
problem the first time I watched the show, but I
just cannot keep up with the subtitles now. It's like
my husband has to explain to me what people are
saying I can't see it. I can't see it from
across the room. I would have to sit in front
of the TV. And even then they go by fast.
Speaker 3 (02:42):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (02:44):
Not made for people with crappy eyesight. Right, so I
kind of got the gist of most of that, I guess,
but you know it was eh, I don't know, right, Okay,
can we find out what's going on with Locke's dad? Please? Please? Please?
Speaker 2 (03:04):
Next week? Next week, next week.
Speaker 1 (03:09):
I mean, I'm glad Jim's dad got to meet Son,
very nice, lovely. His mother is awful, So he had
a good dad.
Speaker 2 (03:18):
Right, but he might not be his real dad.
Speaker 1 (03:21):
That's not true. That's true. That's the explanation. Charles wind Morris,
his dad, Christian Shepherd, was passing through Korea, got drunk,
but a nice lady.
Speaker 2 (03:38):
And not very nice lady.
Speaker 1 (03:42):
Yeah, she's kind of awful, but uh, you know, Son,
the biggest mistake in the book. Don't tell your husband
to just go get something out of your purse.
Speaker 2 (03:52):
No, there's a giant envelope that full of cash.
Speaker 1 (04:00):
Said that. I'm like, oh, come on, she seems like
a smart girl, but sometimes she makes very bad.
Speaker 2 (04:06):
Joys, real dumb moves.
Speaker 1 (04:08):
Yeah, exactly, including trusting Juliet and following her into a dark, weird,
secret medical torture chamber without telling anybody where she's going, right.
Speaker 2 (04:22):
When she's been accosted in the middle of the night,
Yeah by Julia, like sure, what could go wrong?
Speaker 1 (04:28):
I'm sure this is fine. Jack likes her, what could
go wrong?
Speaker 2 (04:32):
Yeah, And Juliet has a whole sob story about how
I want to give someone good news, like you knew
it wasn't necessary, it wasn't really going to be good news.
I mean, I think that's a big difference between being
conceived like fifty days ago or ninety days ago, like yeah,
(04:55):
it's not I don't know.
Speaker 1 (04:58):
Yeah, I mean, obviously the whole thing. And then they
had to at the end give us that little button
of juliette leaving a message for for Bet, just in
case we thought for a moment that she was being nice.
Speaker 2 (05:10):
And saying I hate you, which seemed like a sort
of honest, a middle school thing like wait until you
hang up the phone and then be like I hate you,
or you know, make rude gestures at your parents as
(05:31):
they walk out the root out the dorectly like they'll
never know. Yeah, they probably will.
Speaker 1 (05:41):
Juliette is showing some arrested development, joining the high school
crowd of Kate and Jack and Sawyer fitting right in.
I should mention this in case I can't get it
out when I'm editing. Our neighbors appear to be having
a party or a spirited conversation or something, and their
(06:02):
voices are rather loud. So if you heard that, it's
not the others. It's not some weird island phenomenon. It's
just people having a good time, I guess. And the subplot,
I guess we would call it was our little merry
(06:22):
band of jungle La trespassers, right, dealing with the parachuted
person who was all but dead last week, but this
week was only mostly dead, like Mihale who comes back
out of nowhere exactly.
Speaker 2 (06:38):
Michale wasn't actually dead. And this I believe her name
is Naomi, right.
Speaker 1 (06:43):
Yes, yes, And please note this is twice that they
have had the opportunity to kill Michal and they have
not two times.
Speaker 2 (06:53):
Well, they tried to once they thought they did.
Speaker 1 (06:58):
They thought they did, but then I think somebody was
was maybe suggesting that they I guess they had the
opportunity to shoot him. Yeah, but then they thought the
fence killed him, right, But they had the opportunity to
shoot him twice.
Speaker 2 (07:09):
Yeah, yeah, before they before the fence got him, they
had already let him go once. Right.
Speaker 1 (07:15):
In this episode, Charlie is quite angry that they are not,
and he has good reason to be, which Desmond should know.
What happened to his forward flashing memories? Oh well, yeah,
I had to come.
Speaker 2 (07:33):
But it's a good thing. He was there to puncture
her lung and allow blood to squirt out of it
and save her life that way. And also she speaks
like ten different languages, yes, some of which he understood.
Speaker 1 (07:49):
Yeah. Did we get subtitles for any of those languages? Though?
Speaker 2 (07:54):
I don't think so. I think, well, I don't think so.
I think it was just like, oh, when it was Spanish,
Hurley was translating it. When it was like Russian or something,
Michael was various.
Speaker 1 (08:09):
Yeah, And then at the end we get our dudun
when she says, no, they can't possibly be the survivors
of that plane because there were no survivors they found
the wreckage, right, What what could this mean?
Speaker 2 (08:26):
Is this all a dream?
Speaker 1 (08:30):
Are they all dead? There was. There was throughout the
run of Lost, an insistence by a large portion of
the audience, well a loud portion of the audience, that
they were all dead and in purgatory, right, and that's
what it was. And the creators kept saying, Nope, nope,
not dead, not in purgatory. And then every time something
(08:51):
like this would happen, he says, see, see they're dead,
it's purgatory. Why would you say nope, nope, not dead,
not in purgatory. And then when they got to the
end of the show, stuff happened that made people's heads
explode that they had been lied to all this time.
I don't think that was the case, but it was
(09:11):
not as resoundingly. See it's not that it really needed
to be, because these people who were so sat satan,
But I mean.
Speaker 2 (09:22):
If they knew that people kept thinking this, they were
fanning the flame.
Speaker 1 (09:28):
Obviously they were, yes, and that this was at a
time when people did not yet realize you don't want
a fan that flight. The internet was so new. It
was the idea of online message like online message boards
at television without pity, where people were talking about stuff,
(09:51):
and so it was just quoa. Look how he engaged
people are isn't this great? They didn't realize that these
people will come for you at night in your bed
yell you said it wasn't.
Speaker 2 (10:05):
Or they'll they'll write a whole show about you, like
they wrote about.
Speaker 1 (10:10):
A Yeah. Yeah, yeah, it was intense. Sometimes you have
to let art wash over you people.
Speaker 2 (10:20):
Terry's always wise advice.
Speaker 1 (10:23):
Yes, yes, taken from the Big Chill anyway. So that's strange.
How could that be? How could the plane be someplace else?
The plane plane is here?
Speaker 2 (10:35):
We have seen the wreckage many times.
Speaker 1 (10:38):
We have so strangeness, strangeness everywhere. Yes, indeed, parenting wise,
don't lie to your kids. Well, and I mean that's
(10:58):
would have done with information exactly.
Speaker 2 (11:01):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (11:02):
Yeah, he was already embarrassed by his upbringing. He didn't
need an extra layer.
Speaker 2 (11:06):
Yeah, this is true. Well and also like I mean, son,
you know, gives in to this person's demands, right, and
gives her money and we all know the rule like
don't negotiate with terrorists. Like there's nothing to stop her
(11:28):
from just coming back next week and saying, okay, now
I need more.
Speaker 1 (11:32):
Yes, so, and what exactly was she going to do
with the information? Was she just going to tell him.
Was she going to tell Son's dad? Was she going
to broadcast it? I missed because it was in Korean
and I can't read subtitles. I missed what it was
she was asking for.
Speaker 2 (11:49):
I think she was going to make it public. Yeah,
to shame everyone involved, you know, jim Son, Son's parents, sons, dad,
like all of it.
Speaker 1 (12:01):
I don't care about shaming Son's dance.
Speaker 2 (12:03):
No, we sure don't. But I guess Son did.
Speaker 1 (12:08):
Yeah, I guess, I guess I don't. This This, the
whole son in Gin story is just a blur to
me because because of all the Korean see what they're saying.
Speaker 2 (12:20):
Well, it was one of the sort of interesting things
was that when she she went to her dad to
get the money to pay off this woman, right.
Speaker 1 (12:31):
And she didn't say that just that, she just said
she needs.
Speaker 2 (12:34):
No I know, but the reason but she went to
get the money, and what she told her dad was like, basically,
I always look the other way, like I know what
you're doing, but I pretend not to. And if you
give me.
Speaker 1 (12:49):
The somewhat satisfying moment, right.
Speaker 2 (12:51):
If you give me this money, we will continue on
in this in this manner.
Speaker 1 (12:56):
But then he said, fine, but I'll drag your husband
into it too, right, So and she's like.
Speaker 3 (13:02):
Oh yeah, because I've never liked that guy that was
basically his But I mean that's that's something right for
parenting tip, like your kids love life. Just don't bother,
(13:22):
Like if you try to interfere, it is never going
to go the way she can't.
Speaker 1 (13:28):
Glad that's the chip you're getting from this and not
like emotional blackmail will work on your child every time. Well,
I mean you exact a price for that loan they need.
Speaker 2 (13:38):
Okay, Well she was she was basically doing the same
thing back to her dad, right, I mean she was
emotionally blackmailing him too, in a way.
Speaker 1 (13:50):
Children learn what they love.
Speaker 2 (13:52):
Yes, but we all already knew all of this about
them from we did that episode where she got the
mad fire.
Speaker 1 (14:00):
Yes, so yeah, we're going over some of this territory
a few times just to make sure we get.
Speaker 2 (14:10):
It, which again is a common threat, like, yes, how
many times have we heard about bad dad Christian Shepherd? Yes,
Kate's on the run. Did you realize Kate's on the run? Yeah,
you know said was involved in some stuff.
Speaker 1 (14:30):
Yea, again, I say the next three seasons. We'll go
at a little bit more of a clip as I recall. Yeah,
but I guess a parenting tip if your kid needs money,
be sure to give it. That mean, be glad that
(14:50):
they're coming to you for some reason, You're.
Speaker 2 (14:53):
Right, but and not trying to take matters into their
own hands like Kate exactly.
Speaker 1 (15:00):
They're coming to you to solve their problems. Feel the
self worth that comes with that. They could just be
going to a loan shark or you know, taking something
out of the bank at high interests. But they're coming
to you, you know, exactly, little emotional blackmail, I guess,
But you know, you can still feel useful. This is
(15:22):
how parents feel useful, bailing their kids out of problems.
Speaker 2 (15:28):
Problems that they kind of cause discuss.
Speaker 1 (15:32):
Isn't this better than Kate's mom who just like screamed
and you know went to the police. Yeah, she could
have used that now. Yeah, so I guess one parenting
tip is learn first aid. You never know when you're
(15:53):
gonna have to like puncture a lung or you know,
deal with a spider bite, or you know, figure out
how pregnant somebody is. It's good if you have these skills.
You know, I personally never go anywhere without alcohol, swabs
(16:14):
and band aids because my son picks his skin and
often begins bleeding spontaneously. So you know what is what
is your kid's particular ailment that you need to be
always prepared for. And then you know, I was at
a teaching like a vacation Bible school, and somebody got
(16:36):
a little a little cut, and I'm like, I got it.
I got my first aid. Kid, I'm good. I can
help everybody who's got a cut.
Speaker 2 (16:45):
Who's got a skin your way.
Speaker 1 (16:49):
It's good to be prepared, yes, And also learn many
languages so that when people are talking about that, you
know what it is. You don't have to rely on subtitles.
Speaker 2 (17:01):
Also, learn the basics of human conception, because the first
thing to do to figure out how pregnant someone is
is to say, when was your last period?
Speaker 1 (17:14):
Exactly?
Speaker 2 (17:15):
It's not. Let me find a secret ultrasound machine so
I know something is up.
Speaker 1 (17:26):
Just do plane crashes interfere with your with your cycle
in any way?
Speaker 2 (17:32):
Certainly possibility, but you got it. You can at least
ask the question.
Speaker 1 (17:37):
You could at least ask the question, yes, yeah, Julie,
did they check Juliette's like degrees before they dragged her
to this is island and they make sure she's really qualified.
She said she just a researcher.
Speaker 2 (17:56):
She said, she's a researcher, but she's had to be
rather hands on since she got place.
Speaker 1 (18:05):
Wow, that place we brought the women to die was
pretty look like they had cribs there because just like
just in case or just to like psyche the women
out or what.
Speaker 2 (18:18):
Yeah, I feel like that's what that's what it well,
because that's where they brought Claire.
Speaker 1 (18:23):
This is where we'll put your baby when unless you
die first.
Speaker 2 (18:29):
Yeah. I think it was all like a you know,
oh this way, we're already as soon as the baby's born,
you're right here. We've got everything you'll need.
Speaker 1 (18:41):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (18:42):
Ouch.
Speaker 1 (18:45):
There's a tip. If your healthcare provider seems creepy, it's
okay to switch. Even if you're on an island and
there's nobody else, it's still locate to switch. Yeah, there's
two there's at least two doctors on that island. Jack
hasn't creeped anybody yet, give him time yet. Apparently Mikhale
(19:05):
knows how to do some things.
Speaker 2 (19:07):
Yeah, I mean he could probably deliver a baby baby.
Speaker 1 (19:12):
Give me have farm animals of the place where he was.
Speaker 2 (19:14):
Yeah, I think he did.
Speaker 1 (19:20):
Well. Next week, Catherine, next week, as do you alluded earlier.
Next week, next Tuesday, we will continue a season three
episode nineteen of Lost the brig which is a mock
flashback episode, and we'll bring us back to his bad
(19:40):
dad in a room the man from Tallahassee looked up
the man from Tallahassee. He finally gets a follow up.
How many episodes have been in between?
Speaker 2 (19:50):
Too many?
Speaker 1 (19:52):
To dang many? Why could How they could not follow
that up immediately after is just cruel. Yeah, So if
you've been wondering, hey, whatever happened with that, next week
we will find out. And I have been waiting for
that episode for quite some time. So come on and
(20:12):
we will see you back here tomorrow to discuss only
