Every Wednesday, we share our thoughts on a newer entertainment property, and currently, that's Only Murders in the Building. Last week, we complained about the schtick level, and now we have issues with the plausibility level, as the trio laughably escapes the billionaires' attention in the Velvet Room and then falls for an obviously bad business deal without a second thought. Mentioned: "Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did It?" (the patter song from season 3).

Next Wednesday, we'll continue with season 5, episode 4, "Tongue Tied." We'll be back tomorrow with our weekly roundup.

Speaker 1 (00:03):
Welcome to the Parenting Roundabout podcast. I'm Terry Morrow and
I'm Catherine Jileco. As parents and parenting writers, we can't
help but see everything through a parenting lens. But as
our kids have become adults, we find ourselves more interested
in getting caught up on movies and streaming than I'm
going over the same parenting topics over and over.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
So since we're pretty sure we can find parenting wisdom anywhere,
we're going to talk about what we're watching, what we
thought about it, and maybe what we can learn from it,
if only what not to do. Watch and listen along,
and let's all make like we're doing something important for
our families. Each Wednesday we bring you our thoughts on
a newer entertainment property. And for this week of September

(00:45):
twenty second, we're continuing with season five of Only Murders
in the Building. This is episode four. It's called Dirty
Birds and the you know, we talked about the stick
dial being turned way too far up and now it's
the plausibility dial of Oh my goodness, the trio hiding

(01:08):
in the velvet room bar like as if that's the
best place for them to hide. And then manufacturing a
very small and minor distraction so that they can basically
run in front of their face, the three billionaire's faces
to get out like it was so like, come on,

(01:30):
that's an insult to my intelligence as a TV watcher, Like,
give me a break.

Speaker 1 (01:37):
Yeah, that was pretty dumb. Pretty much everything in this
episode is pretty dumb, and I I don't want to
feel this way about my cute little show. I guess,
as they said early in the episode, somebody said, what's
happening to our sweet little murder building? Yes, I feel
like what's happening to our sweet little murder show? They've

(01:58):
sort of forgotten what made this charming. I just I
am profoundly uninterested in the three billionaires, and it seems
like the characters have just been our friendly characters have
just been reduced to stereotypes of some sort. Mabel just

(02:22):
seem like herself. I don't know, she seems I don't
know if they're gonna at some point say something like
she's depressed or whatever, but she just Yeah, she's so
energy coming from her. And I don't know if it's
the character or the actress or what, but you need
her normal, enthusiastic, normal, person vibes to counteract the two dudes,

(02:49):
and I'm not feeling it this season. She's got kind
of a like, well, I'm cractually obligated to be here vibe,
which I don't think is right. I don't think that.
I mean, I think she's happy to to be doing
the show. It's just I'm not. Yeah, it's kind of
I don't know. It doesn't feel as fun as it

(03:10):
used to. Yes, the guys are too mannic and she's.

Speaker 2 (03:14):
Not a yeah, yeah, yeah, I did enjoy the the
runner of how old is Christoph Waltz's character that they're
trying to figure out how old he is because he's
one of these like longevity hacker type people, like, oh,
I only eat after eleven am. And you know, all

(03:40):
the stuff with the cleaver was dopey, but you know, right,
he just name dropping Dorothy Parker.

Speaker 3 (03:49):
That was, Yeah, it was fun. I did laugh at
some of those lines.

Speaker 1 (03:54):
Yeah, and we have.

Speaker 2 (03:55):
They introduced a robot doorman to of course, they sort
of replace Lester, which again.

Speaker 1 (04:03):
Like, yeah, Chinel too hard.

Speaker 3 (04:08):
They're exactly like we're you know, we all know that
everyone in the world is scared about robots seeking their
job just.

Speaker 1 (04:17):
Like yeah, yeah, and the whole I mean we mentioned
I think earlier that the whole thing of their podcasting,
the autopsy they're podcasting, they're being in hiding in this room,
and right they're just it's like the billionaires are saying like, well,

(04:41):
we'll sue you for libel. And also you weren't actually
handling a dead body that you weren't supposed to have,
were you? How do they put this podcast out? Are
they are we supposed to believe they're putting it out
in real time? I don't understand. And then the whole
thing of them sell you know, signing up with the

(05:02):
wondery Spotify joke. Yes, they have a lawyer. Supposedly they
have a lawyer who looked over the paperwork. Everything goes
very fast. Clearly it was the guy she was talking
to that set this up. I'm an old lady, I
can figure that out. Maybe should be sharp enough to

(05:23):
fiddle that, you know, you say to this guy, gee,
I wish I could get my podcast picked up by
this place. And then they call you almost immediately thereafter.

Speaker 2 (05:31):
Right, Well, and if you had a lawyer, If you
had a lawyer, they would have alerted.

Speaker 1 (05:38):
You to like, I don't think this is the way
things work.

Speaker 3 (05:43):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (05:44):
Yeah, Also, I mean just the joke of Renee zelwig
Wegger's character completely remaking a room in Oliver's apartment like
in an instant. Yes, I guess funny, but also, oh,
we're supposed to be at least theoretically based in reality.

Speaker 3 (06:07):
Yes, yes, yeah.

Speaker 2 (06:09):
My husband was like, wait, how exactly what just happened?

Speaker 3 (06:14):
I was like, yeah, it's it's a joke, but I
don't think it worked.

Speaker 1 (06:20):
I think the joke of it is not worth the
suspension of disbelief it requires, because if they're going to
start just just doing whatever, then let's everybody have some
fun with that. Are we saying that she's a witch
and she can actually just make them stop? Yeah? I

(06:40):
feel like such a curmudgeon because it's only m'ders in
the building. It's fun. It's Marty and Steve and Selena
and all our friends. Come on, have you listened to
the podcast at all?

Speaker 2 (06:55):
I have not the official podcast that they tease all
the time.

Speaker 1 (07:00):
Cyril Creighton, who plays Howard does it okay? And they
don't seem to really be talking about the plots of
the episodes, although they're titled after the episodes. It's more like,
let's talk to people about how cool this show is.
And everybody thinks it's pretty cool, so what.

Speaker 3 (07:17):
Do Well, that's at least on this.

Speaker 1 (07:21):
Going like, I I'm glad you all think it's cool.
I'm so happy for you. But they interviewed the guy
who does the music and that was kind of interesting,
and you know, various actors, and everybody just thinks it's
the best job, it's the best place to go, and
I'm so happy for you all. But making an entertainment

(07:41):
product that the audience enjoys is as Yeah.

Speaker 2 (07:45):
Yeah, at least on the Gilded Age podcast, the official podcast,
they it provided a lot of historical context.

Speaker 1 (07:54):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (07:55):
It also had tons of interviews with people who worked
on the show.

Speaker 1 (08:00):
So did they all think it was fabulous?

Speaker 3 (08:02):
I mean they.

Speaker 1 (08:03):
Did, of course, but it didn't come across you just
want one person to come on to this thing. These
successful shows bring one person on to say, you know,
I had a really bad time. The craft services stink
and the corsets were really tight, and you know, the
people are really not that pleasant. Yeah, glad, I'm glad.
I'm my character got killed off.

Speaker 2 (08:21):
Well that's never going to be on the official podcast.
But it was more interesting than what you're describing, which
is just like, yes, yay, it's so good.

Speaker 3 (08:32):
It was so good.

Speaker 1 (08:34):
Yeah, yeah, not necessarily. I mean I enjoyed the people
I was listening to, Yeah, but it didn't really shine
any light on anything, right, And everybody's happy to be
there and it's fabulous, which we already kind.

Speaker 3 (08:49):
Of kind of so yeah yeah.

Speaker 1 (08:55):
And the one character was pointing out what we did
is that the the in the building is a is
a stupid business model. He was arguing whether or not
the dry cleaner was really part of the building, which
I think is a legitimate but you had our But

(09:16):
maybe Nikky wasn't actually killed there.

Speaker 3 (09:18):
Right and then which case, what do you do?

Speaker 1 (09:22):
You can been killed anywhere and frozen and hung up there, right,
So the well, maybe he was killed somewhere in the
actual Arconia.

Speaker 3 (09:29):
Well, I guess so it's possible.

Speaker 1 (09:34):
I think, as we have found out on this show,
anything is possible. Yes, he could. You know, pretty much
anything could happen, which is not the best thing for
a mystery.

Speaker 3 (09:45):
But right, well we need to get some parenting out
of it.

Speaker 1 (09:52):
Okay, I have some parenting. Okay, let's hear it all right.
One parenting tip from this we can get is don't
trust power people who are acting all nice to you.
Sure I'll help you with that, Oh sure I'll you know,
tell me your problems, honey. Yeah, don't trust them. This
is something that I learned in school school advocacy. Yes,

(10:14):
people might act like they're your friend, but don't trust,
but verify trust. But don't sign a contract until you
have read every word. You know. Yeah, sometimes people can
act like they are your friends who are not. Here's

(10:35):
another one. This is a parenting parents will enjoy hearing this.
Your children's teenage experiences will form them for life. Yes,
it doesn't matter how beautiful and fabulous Mabel is, She's
never gonna forget when ALTHEA was not nice to her
and took all her friends. That that hurt girl is

(10:58):
going to be in her ever, So no pressure parents,
when you tell your kids, when you tell your kids
you'll grow out of it, it'll be fine.

Speaker 3 (11:07):
You know what.

Speaker 1 (11:08):
Why the time you're in your twenties, you won't even
remember this wrong, they will remember it forever. I remember
quite old, and I remember. Yeah, we all remember we
were on Lost, we will be having flashbacks about on
this show, she just makes bad decisions. And also sometimes

(11:32):
that thing that you think you want for your child
is not what you think it is. I mean, they
were so if we got this big podcast contract, that's
what we want. You know what, it turns out to
be not good. So you know, leave yourself open for
changing plans and be super cautious about things that seem

(11:52):
like a good idea, like listening to this podcast for
making right now, watching this TV show which seems to
be losing its way. Yeah, next season it's going to
be all robots.

Speaker 3 (12:10):
Has it already been renewed for another season?

Speaker 1 (12:13):
Oh? If it hasn't, it's just a formality unless but see,
if any of the actors want to leave, that's great,
we just replace them with the robot. Yeah, you know
that's maybe that's the threat.

Speaker 3 (12:23):
That's what they've set up now of course excellent.

Speaker 2 (12:29):
Oh well, dear, Yeah, it's you know, there's certain shows
that I'm like, oh, I can't wait till the next
one comes out, you know, or even stuff that you
watch live, like Dancing with the Stars, which we'll talk about,
or you know, there's a new season of the Great
British banking show right now and they drop it once

(12:52):
a week, and I do feel like it used to
be like, oh, today's today's the day we get a
new episode of Only Murders in the Filding And I
don't feel like that anymore. Like I definitely didn't watch
it on the first day.

Speaker 1 (13:05):
I could have, Yeah, I don't, and I feel bad
about it. Yeah, and it could pull itself out. But
I noticed that Extra Hot Great had sort of the
same feeling about it that we did the Extra Hot
Grade podcast and also added the element of they should
stop doing this before one of those guys dies, which
I would not have condent, but they have a point. Ye,

(13:32):
So yeah, what do you what do you got murdered?
Only Murders in the Building?

Speaker 3 (13:37):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (13:38):
Do you got show us something?

Speaker 3 (13:41):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (13:41):
I think my favorite us, my favorite episode.

Speaker 1 (13:44):
The second episode was so good and so full of
heart and so full of everything. We've loved this for year.
Back in that direction, please.

Speaker 2 (13:54):
Or some fun songs. I mean, I did very much
enjoy this season.

Speaker 1 (14:00):
The musical theater, you know, Yes, that was fun. Then
as Charles doing a pattern I know.

Speaker 3 (14:10):
That will never not be amazing. I loved that.

Speaker 4 (14:17):
Well, next wednes we'll talk about the next episode. Yes,
so it's episode five, Tongue Tied.

Speaker 3 (14:29):
It's coming up next. So we're gonna see.

Speaker 1 (14:33):
We're gonna stick with it, right, Yes, we are. We're
gonna we're gonna make it through the season. We're gonna
see what happens, and uh, you know, we're gonna try
to find nice things to say. We'll definitely try to
find parenting things to say, and hopefully it will if
you're back in a direction that we enjoy.

Speaker 3 (14:51):
Yes, we can hope. So that's next Wednesday, and we'll

Stuff You Should Know
Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
