Speaker 1 (00:03):
Welcome to the Parenting Roundabout podcast. I'm Terry Morrow and
I'm Catherine Jileco. As parents and parenting writers, we can't
help but see everything through a parenting lens. But as
our kids have become adults, we find ourselves more interested
in getting caught up on movies and streaming than I'm
going over the same parenting topics over and over.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
So since we're pretty sure we can find parenting wisdom anywhere,
we're going to talk about what we're watching, what we
thought about it, and maybe what we can learn from it,
if only what not to do. Watch and listen along,
and let's all make like we're doing something important for
our families. Each Wednesday we bring you our thoughts on
a newer entertainment property, and for this week of August eighteenth,
(00:46):
we're continuing with The Gilded Age, Season three, Episode five.
A Different World and Gladys is in a different world.
She's in the castle in England and there's mice and
everyone's mean and they fired her maid. Jack's in a
(01:06):
different world, only some people don't know about it, and
then find out, much to his dismay, that he's a
it's a rich guy now and Larry takes him to
some kind of seedy gentleman's establishment and he's just like
(01:27):
saucer eyes, like what is this place? He's so it
seemed like he neither he nor Larry got into too
much trouble there though. No, they mostly were there to
realize that Maud Beaten, the one who scammed Oscar was
(01:49):
was somehow there.
Speaker 1 (01:51):
So yeah, yeah, sure, eyes there, Larry. But yeah, let's see,
it's sort of a different world at the Russell household
with uh, you know, mom and dad are fighting. I
like that they are, and you know, Bertha is pretty
(02:12):
much always out of line and doing things that make
us angry. But I think in this case what George
was kind of out of line.
Speaker 2 (02:22):
I think with her or with his business.
Speaker 1 (02:25):
Everybody, with firing his guy, and then with just just
you know, if Bertha had done a specific thing that
caused this to happen, which I keep thinking, was it
the dowry that's caused the dowry that caused the problem?
My man, you got a case, but he just seems
(02:48):
pissy for no reason and yikes.
Speaker 2 (02:53):
Yeah. Well, and then at the end he gets a
letter from Gladys where she's like, yeah, I hated here,
so I think that was kind of the last straw
for Papa George.
Speaker 1 (03:07):
Yeah, the time to draw the line is before she
marries the guy, not when she's in England, and you
were too weak to do anything about it up until then.
So I guess that's why I feel. But it's just
sort of he just seems ready to blow everything up
(03:27):
without a really clear if she had like gone out
and spent all the money or something right that he needed.
So I expected that when this moment came for the
two of them, there would be a very clear offense
on Bertha's part. But she's just being Bertha.
Speaker 2 (03:44):
Yeah, yeah, you're right, she's not doing anything different than
what she's been doing for all three seasons.
Speaker 1 (03:50):
Yeah. Just all of a sudden, overnight, he's decided that's it,
I'm done right, So.
Speaker 2 (03:56):
Yikes, And he's going to send Larry to Arizona, and Larry's.
Speaker 1 (04:01):
Basically sctacularly bad idea.
Speaker 2 (04:03):
But I did very much enjoy Larry just being like, well,
what's in it for me?
Speaker 1 (04:09):
Yeah? Yeah, like.
Speaker 2 (04:12):
Your life that you've grown accustomed to. I mean, I
know you just made a bundle on that clock, but
you know, perhaps your dad wants to have something to
pass along to.
Speaker 1 (04:27):
You right in the future. But I mean, has he
been involved in the business at all, and now all
of a sudden he's going off to the wild wild
West to rep that business. Yeah, well, if he can negotiate,
do we know if.
Speaker 2 (04:43):
Hell we've seen him negotiate with the clock people.
Speaker 1 (04:47):
Well, that's true, I guess somehow, Yet, somehow, I think
this is a different sort of thing. Yeah, seems like
an odd choice to just send him there by himself.
Speaker 2 (04:57):
Right and early on, Larry was all about I want
to be an architect. It's my dream night, it's my
passion to be an architect. We haven't heard Boo about
that in a while, No, no, but we have heard
him ask Marian to marry him.
Speaker 1 (05:16):
Yes, please, Mary. Needed first, I'm going to go to
Arizona for an undetermined amount of time.
Speaker 2 (05:21):
Yeah, and don't tell anybody until I get back. Yeah,
and we'll tell my dad, but we'll wait until we
have company over to just spring it on my mom
that that was uncomfortable.
Speaker 1 (05:36):
Yes, that was, but you know, he could do worse.
I don't know what she wants wants for him at
this point.
Speaker 2 (05:45):
But yeah, I feel like she has less interest and
also less influence on her son's choice ofspouse versus her daughters.
Speaker 1 (06:00):
Yeah and uh.
Speaker 2 (06:02):
Oh, and it was a different world when they suddenly
were in Newport, which, yes, it's always kind of like,
doesn't it take like two days to get there? I
don't know, But they're suddenly in Newport and poor Aurora
is being absolutely shunned by everyworld.
Speaker 1 (06:22):
All right, yep, thanks to that awful Charles. How does
he get to keep the friends?
Speaker 2 (06:33):
Because it's not bad for a man to be divorced,
it's only bad for a woman to be divorced.
Speaker 1 (06:38):
Even though the fact that she divorces him makes it
clear that it's his fault, it's still yeah, that's dumb. Yeah,
missus Fish is calling on Missus Astor to boldly change
the tradition of that right, we shall.
Speaker 2 (06:56):
See, because if she doesn't, she's going to have to
do so, she's going to find herself having to basically
disown her own kid.
Speaker 1 (07:04):
Yeah, so she looks like she's thinking about that.
Speaker 2 (07:07):
She does.
Speaker 1 (07:09):
I can do that, That's the thing I can do.
Speaker 2 (07:17):
But this, like this whole storyline, both Aurora and Missus
Astor have had to be like, oh, you know, make
excuses for their family member of why they're not there, which,
like as a spouse or a parent, is a position
(07:38):
I can't stand being an you know, like I just
don't go if I'm going to have to explain why
that other person is not there.
Speaker 1 (07:52):
You have an option to just skip it yourself, right,
And if it's going to be awkward, maybe you want to. Yeah,
but also don't you know, force things. Don't don't force
people to go to things that they don't want to
go to and then nitpick their behavior, right, not so
(08:18):
much the issue here.
Speaker 2 (08:19):
But yeah, well that's sort of the issue with poor
Gladys because that's true as the sister was like just
awful to her, and the duke pointed out, like you
told me we needed this, you know, we needed money
and this was the way to get it. And now
(08:41):
she just can't stand the idea of this person being
in her home and basically taking her place.
Speaker 1 (08:48):
Right right, Yes, she never never occurred to her that
he'd have to bring her there, which what exactly what
sort of transaction were you considering? Right? It would be yeah,
marriage and murder out Yeah, yeah, well she's it doesn't
seem like the Duke is necessarily being awful to Gladys.
It's just the sister and he's not sticking up for her. Yeah,
(09:15):
maybe a little bit, but you can see how it
would be awkward to just sort of be displaced in
your own home by somebody you feel is sort of
callow and unknowing, right, But at the same time, you
know it's not her fault.
Speaker 2 (09:33):
Yeah, and you can show a little human a little compassion. Yes,
you could take her under your wing, and yes, teach
her what she needs.
Speaker 1 (09:47):
Befriending her would give you power. Freezing her out is
eventually going to get you frozen out, right, And also
her mother is coming and is gonna a little bit
off her game right now. But even so, I'm pretty
sure she can pametic.
Speaker 2 (10:05):
Yeah. Yeah, that was.
Speaker 1 (10:10):
A big old American seat.
Speaker 2 (10:14):
And that was a a mom move right there. I
can fix this. I'm getting on a boat tomorrow. I'll
fix it.
Speaker 1 (10:24):
That kind of that kind of like that's not very satisfying,
Like I'm gonna fix it. I'm gonna get on a boat.
Speaker 2 (10:31):
I'll be carrying two weeks over there.
Speaker 1 (10:35):
Why then I'm gonna write everything?
Speaker 2 (10:37):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (10:38):
Yeah, you know, when you want to be when you're
a mom and you want to fix things, you want
to fix things now, right, So that's yeah. But uh
but no, was never fear gladys mom's comments of British
society is going to uh hamper Bertha. I'm sure if
(10:58):
she can just win everywhere.
Speaker 2 (11:01):
Yeah, I mean I think I feel like we've seen
that she is very shrewd and she figured out what
to do in terms of New York society. Yes, so
it seems to me that give her a couple of days, she's.
Speaker 1 (11:19):
Got a couple of well, she's got a couple of
weeks on the boat to study up.
Speaker 2 (11:22):
Yep.
Speaker 1 (11:23):
She like packs her you know, all her rules of
English manners guests and will just alight ready to do battle.
Speaker 2 (11:33):
Do battle with Lady Sarah. I think it's her name, Yes.
Speaker 1 (11:40):
You know, kick her ass, teach Gladys to do so, yeah, that.
Speaker 2 (11:47):
Would be better. But I don't know if Gladys has
an er.
Speaker 1 (11:51):
You sort of wonder if also if Gladys is like
happy her mother is coming or going, oh crap. The
one good thing about being here is right that my
mother wasn't here.
Speaker 2 (12:02):
I was hoping Dad would come.
Speaker 1 (12:04):
Yeah, Dad, come on, what's how about Larry. Could Larry come, Oh,
he's going to Arizona? Darn it.
Speaker 2 (12:12):
Larry was the one who had this spectacularly dumb idea
to tell her to Elope with Billy. So Larry's kind
of a dufuss about this.
Speaker 1 (12:21):
Judgment is questionable. Yeah, oh dear, Well what else?
Speaker 2 (12:32):
And we had Peggy Yeah, bumping into an old soap opera. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (12:40):
Yeah, her doesn't take no for an answer, doesn't know.
Speaker 2 (12:43):
T Thomas fortune she had written for. She went to
meet booker T Washington with him and he got a little.
Speaker 1 (12:54):
Friendly yes, and he was married and yes, you know,
but he still keeps buzzing around. And now she has
this new guy and he's still still trying to warm
his way in.
Speaker 2 (13:13):
Yeah, he really would a weasel. Yeah that was that
was not cool.
Speaker 1 (13:17):
She has soundly rejected him now twice more so. Right,
it would be nice if he would just buzz off. Yeah,
bring bring where's Felicia a shot? Bring her over here,
bring her over here. Take this dude down, will Yeah,
I'm sure he's done something that you can find fault with.
Speaker 2 (13:38):
Yeah, absolutely, Yeah.
Speaker 1 (13:41):
I guess A missus astor related parenting tip is, uh,
don't set up standards that then your children can't meet.
Realize that whatever you, whatever you do to other people,
people are going to visit back to you. Right, and
so you know a lot of times parents get caught
doing things and then when it comes back it's.
Speaker 2 (14:05):
Yeah, yeah, exactly.
Speaker 1 (14:08):
Just create one reality for you and your child and
a different reality for everybody else's children. Yeah, try though
you might. If anybody could missus Astor, it would be you.
If even Missus Fish is standing up to you on
this issue, then you might want to reconsider your approach.
(14:32):
This is like, you know, the head of the PTA,
people start questioning her. She knows there's cracks in the
veneer of her power. Rethink your approach. Also, if you,
like Missus Russell, put your child in a particularly challenging position,
(14:56):
you need to prepare them for it, right. You know
she uh, all that time that did to give Gladys
some ball busting lessons before she put her on a boat, or.
Speaker 2 (15:10):
Even just some like English society, you know, all.
Speaker 1 (15:15):
That hired somebody in New York to her All.
Speaker 2 (15:19):
That time she was just sitting up in her room
moping about how she had to get married. She could
have been she could have been learning.
Speaker 1 (15:27):
It's fine to be ambitious for your kids, but you
have to prepare them for it. Yeah, you know, don't
put them in a position where they're going to fail
because they don't you know.
Speaker 2 (15:40):
They don't know that they don't Diamond stars are absolutely
the worst thing you could wear to dinner.
Speaker 1 (15:48):
No, yeah, that seems like the sort of thing that
somebody could have told them ahead of time, right, or
else have up like a newspaper at the ready of
some high society person wearing them. You know, right, you
got a trainer, Yeah, but has been drop the ball
(16:12):
on that. It's not enough just to get her married
to the duke. You gotta you got a teacher to
be you a formidable presence. Also find some dirt on
that sister. Do a old blackmail? Yeah yeah, probably could
(16:33):
have could have easily been done. Opportunities wasted. Uh huh,
that's true. Oh, the the seance continued.
Speaker 2 (16:46):
Andrea Martin is bad.
Speaker 1 (16:49):
It did seem to watch. Did she ever give the
watch back? And I will you know, I when she
handed it it was under her blouse right when Ada gave.
Speaker 2 (17:00):
It to her, I thought, oh, that's not coming back.
But then I forgot to actually check so good question. Yeah,
but I mean Ada.
Speaker 1 (17:11):
Did seem to be there, Andrea Martin, but you're shady, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (17:15):
You're shady. But she she did seem to be comforted
when she left Ada, so maybe it was it was
worth it.
Speaker 1 (17:24):
Ada not the sharpest tool in the door, but.
Speaker 2 (17:29):
She she seems to She skipped a temperance meeting to
go to visit this moment, So maybe she's gonna be
off that hole. Yeah, bad idea.
Speaker 1 (17:40):
If Agnes finds a way to steal Jack's money, She's
going to be back to being a top dog in
the house. Right up, Jack, the money is on a bank, right.
I'm so worried about that money. I hope it's just
not like under his mattress or you know. Yeah, where
would he even hide it? What's I've domiciled? Does he
(18:02):
have there? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (18:03):
Well, I think you mentioned last week a footman's Garrett.
I mean he does live there, because he said, like
this is the only home I know.
Speaker 1 (18:11):
Right, So where can he you know, who can he trust? Larry?
If Larry was a more mature and sober fellow, I
would think that he took them immediately and set up
a bank account, right safe or something. But Larry's he's.
Speaker 2 (18:29):
Kind of clueless about a lot of things.
Speaker 1 (18:32):
He is as unprepared for the roughness of real life
as his sister. So why his dad thought it was
a good idea to just send him off too like
the wild West. From what we saw at the beginning,
it'll be fine.
Speaker 2 (18:50):
They just need a little bump in the road for
Larry and Marion. Yeah, they do so, But also, how
many episodes are there.
Speaker 1 (19:03):
Season three? Yeah, sending Larry to Arizona is like the
corollary to don't send your daughter to England without preparing
her for British society. Don't send your son to Arizona
without like, does he have like a side arm of
some sort? Right, it's even taught shooting.
Speaker 2 (19:27):
I'm just checking how many Yeah, there's only eight episodes? Fun,
this was five, So but there is going to be
a season four?
Speaker 1 (19:41):
Yes, I saw that. So what's up next?
Speaker 2 (19:47):
So next Wednesday, the episode is called if you want
to Cook an omelet.
Speaker 1 (19:51):
Ah, which we know continues with you have to break
to break some xt So we're gonna see Bertha gonna
England and break some eggs, we hope. Yeah, Larry doesn't
look like an egg breaker. To me, but who knows.
We'll see there are plentiful eggs to be broken.
Speaker 2 (20:11):
That's right, that's risk.
Speaker 1 (20:13):
Let's get cracking.
Speaker 2 (20:15):
So we'll find out next week about that next Wednesday,
and our weekly Roundabout roundup is on vacation this week,
so we will see you back here next Tuesday for
Lost Season three, episode thirteen, The Man from Tallahassee.
