This message invites us to see stewardship in a different light, not just as a financial duty but as a spiritual opportunity. In Luke 12:15, we're reminded that life isn't about possessions but about purpose. The "dinosaur" symbolizes anything we cling to out of fear, pride, or the illusion of control, things we think we need to survive but that actually hold us back from living freely in God's purpose. Everything we have, our money, time, relationships, and abilities, is a gift from God, and we are called to steward it, not hoard it. This sermon challenges us to release what weighs us down and trust that God can do more with our surrender than we could ever do with our grip. It's not just about giving to a church; it's about becoming a church that reflects Jesus, boldly loving, freely giving, and fully trusting the One who gave everything for us.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, a few years ago, I was there.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
Target Store and I was shopping for a Christmas present
for my grandson Gavin. When I was there, I saw
a toddler.

Speaker 3 (00:24):
In the toy aisle having.

Speaker 1 (00:27):
What can only be described as.

Speaker 2 (00:31):
An Oscar worthy meltdown, screaming, SnO flowing everywhere, lying on
the floor like life was over because he couldn't have

(00:52):
a twenty nine dollars and ninety nine dinosaur that walked
and roared.

Speaker 4 (01:00):
His mother is looking at me, looking at her son,
and she said, that's not what we came here for.

Speaker 1 (01:14):
And I stood there in a moment.

Speaker 2 (01:18):
Watching this drama on fold. If you've had kids, you
know what it's like. We've all been there. And I wondered,
when I had this flashback.

Speaker 1 (01:30):
To the good old days when we had kids I
get at home.

Speaker 2 (01:33):
I wondered, if God feels this same way.

Speaker 1 (01:39):
About me at times split through my mind. We have
a tendency to clutch our dinosaurs. Those would be what
we want.

Speaker 2 (01:58):
To clunch them, our money, our stuff, our plans, and
sometimes we just may throw a tantrum when we don't
get what we want. And God's voice quietly says.

Speaker 3 (02:18):
That's not what you're here for.

Speaker 1 (02:25):
That's not and that takes us to the subject of
the day.

Speaker 2 (02:32):
Of stewardship, and that is that stewardship is about what
we are here for. It's differentiating that and distinguishing.

Speaker 1 (02:43):
That why are we here?

Speaker 2 (02:45):
And it begins with an understanding that everything we.

Speaker 1 (02:49):
Have is a blessing. It really is.

Speaker 2 (02:57):
Not just a paycheck or give it ends or capital gains,
but also time, the most valuable asset of all. Don't
waste my time with unnecessary gatherings.

Speaker 1 (03:20):
Don't waste my time.

Speaker 2 (03:22):
Don't confuse activity with accomplishment. There is a stewardship of time,
don't waste it.

Speaker 1 (03:33):
It's a stewardship of skills.

Speaker 2 (03:37):
Yesterday, well, thinking of this sermon, I was amazed and
that beautiful day we had, and how I saw so
many people around here stewarding your skills. Daryl was there
with the tractor and that flairmower in the back, risking
his life to mold the front of the logging on

(03:58):
Capitol Drive so with a pretty would come in. Then
that wasn't enough. He's a glut for punishment. He's got
the leaf blower, he's blowing leaves. I go, oh, Darryl,
thank you so much, and he had a big smile
and says, oh, it's a great day.

Speaker 1 (04:11):
Thank you, Darryl, thank you.

Speaker 3 (04:14):
Fred was running around here with his wife.

Speaker 1 (04:17):
He said a lot I'm concerned about.

Speaker 2 (04:18):
You know, it's a ditch over here in the corner
of the building and he was took a posthole digger
and they were doing their thing, and Randy was here.

Speaker 1 (04:28):
Oh, the church. We messed the church up last Sunday.

Speaker 2 (04:32):
That was good because we used it every corner of it,
but we had to clean it up. Randy was here
with others cleaning the building up. And then yesterday you
couldn't believe all that was going on here where we
had the video production where it's working on some videos
for us.

Speaker 1 (04:49):
They had interviews and.

Speaker 2 (04:52):
It was amazing and looking around it was people giving
of themselves, their.

Speaker 1 (05:00):
Time, their talent, their skills.

Speaker 2 (05:05):
But I also say we are also stewards of influence.

Speaker 1 (05:13):
Your life.

Speaker 2 (05:14):
How you can go to bat for someone, how you
can be that person who can encourage another. That is
a stewardship of resources as well, where you're able to
make things happen. And so here we are every year,
that time of year when we look at stewardship as

(05:37):
we approach consecration Sunday, and I want to.

Speaker 1 (05:41):
Just speak about that a bit this morning.

Speaker 2 (05:45):
First of all, it would encourage you not to think
about the stewardship campaign is to fund a church budget.
We don't give or stewards because there's a budget to fund.
It's really this annual time of looking at our stewardship.

(06:08):
It's like initiating and renewing our decision to offer everything to.

Speaker 3 (06:15):
God and for the glory of God.

Speaker 2 (06:19):
Now granted, at the end of January, a budget will
be presented of the congregation and we need to be
good stewardes based upon our expectations when we have.

Speaker 1 (06:28):
To do that.

Speaker 2 (06:29):
But that's not why we give. It's not the purpose
in our giving. And when we look at it every year,
as we look at our estimate of intended giving on
our cards, it kind of reminds me of an anniversary
for marriage. Okay, next year, I'm going to celebrate fifty.

Speaker 1 (06:51):
Years of being married to that gal. Fifty years.

Speaker 2 (06:55):
Yeah, And what's important every year when that time comes
around to think of how's the commitment going. Do I
need to invest less?

Speaker 3 (07:10):
You know where I'm going?

Speaker 1 (07:13):
You know where I'm going, well, we were visit. I
think that our marriage it was beautiful.

Speaker 2 (07:20):
It was in the cathedral of Monsieur method of beautiful churches,
and one of the members of the church he owned
a company that that that supplied uh television cameras and banks.
It was before they had the small you know, uh
home owned video cameras, but he owned this company and said, Lonnie,

(07:40):
for your wedding gift, I'm going to have my company
come out and we're gonna set cameras out and we're
gonna videotape your wedding and you're gonna you know, that
old grady black and white stuff you'd have in a bag.

Speaker 1 (07:49):
But we have that. So every year for forty nine
years already.

Speaker 5 (07:55):
I look at the little video I look at and
I think of the I dos, and I think of
the commitment, and I think it would be terrible to say, well,
you know, the kids are married, the schools all paid for.

Speaker 3 (08:16):
Maybe we don't need to commit as much to each
other anymore.

Speaker 1 (08:20):
You know, it's not it's a.

Speaker 2 (08:21):
Matter of what am I doing with those blessings that
God has given me, and what is the orientation of
their value in my life? So when we get together
at this annual time of consecration is really a time
to like renew.

Speaker 1 (08:38):
The commitments we made. How's it going?

Speaker 2 (08:42):
How do you treasure what you have been able to
experience in this life together? And by saying, God, I
trust you more now than I trust my stuff.

Speaker 1 (08:58):
And here it is, that essentially is what it is.
Here it is. And I am intrigued though.

Speaker 2 (09:06):
That in this whole subject of stewarding, as Jesus gave
this parable that in Eddie, you did a great job
reading that it was marvelous. Jesus offers a caution. When
I think that Jesus is saying, hey, watch out for this,

(09:27):
I really want to hear.

Speaker 1 (09:29):
What is he after?

Speaker 2 (09:30):
And Jesus offered this caution. He said, watch out, be
on guard against all kinds of creed. Life does not consist.

Speaker 3 (09:47):
In the abundance.

Speaker 1 (09:50):
Of possessions. Be on guard. Why Why? Because greed.

Speaker 2 (10:06):
Is sneaky, It's really sneaky.

Speaker 1 (10:12):
It can take over in tough times, it can really
take over. I think of this.

Speaker 6 (10:24):
Story, I don't know if it's a true story. There's
a difference between a true story and a truth story. Okay,
parables are truth stories. We don't know that they happened literally.

Speaker 2 (10:36):
But one thing that really inspired me well long in
my Christian walk to tithe was this.

Speaker 1 (10:44):
Very simple truth story.

Speaker 2 (10:47):
You may have heard it years ago, I don't know,
but I want to just share it now.

Speaker 1 (10:51):
And it goes like this.

Speaker 2 (10:52):
You know, a mother was giving her son two quarters
as he left to go to church. Sunday school was
before the worship service. It was a neighborhood church. He
was able to walk on the sidewalk and he had
a quarter in one hand and a quarter in the other,
and she said, now, this quarter is for your Sunday
school offering. The other quarter is as you walk home,

(11:16):
you can go to the local grocery store and get
some penny candy. Then you can get a lot of candy.
You could actually get twenty five pieces of candy for
a quarter. And he was thrilled. He had money in
both hands. He's walking along thinking about.

Speaker 1 (11:33):
His candy after church probably, and.

Speaker 2 (11:37):
As he's walking on the sidewalk, he stumbles and one
of the quarters fell out of his hand and it
rode into the street sewer, and he said, God, there
went your quarter. Yeah, think about it. The times are rough.

(12:03):
Watch it Jesus said, you can get greedy. See, stewardship is.

Speaker 3 (12:12):
Not about giving what's left.

Speaker 1 (12:16):
It's the first fruit.

Speaker 2 (12:19):
And it is that symbol of putting God first above all.

Speaker 1 (12:26):
Maybe you're retired or you're heading there.

Speaker 2 (12:32):
You've worked hard, you sacrificed, you raised the family, you
built a career. Maybe you even have the nest egg
you hope you would always have. And now the question becomes,
what will my life now say when I am gone?

Speaker 1 (12:59):
What legacy am I leaving?

Speaker 2 (13:04):
Not just to my kids and grandkids, of course, but
what is my legacy to.

Speaker 1 (13:10):
The Kingdom of God? What is that going to look
like a friend once stole me At the end of your.

Speaker 2 (13:20):
Life, nobody's reading your bank statement at your funeral, They're
reading your impact. That's what they're going to read. That's
what they're going to celebrate. That over against our popular

(13:42):
culture that says you earned it, you did, you deserve it.

Speaker 1 (13:49):
Of course now protected. And it's interesting where Jesus has
a counter to that.

Speaker 2 (14:01):
You received it, steward it, release it. That's what you're
here for.

Speaker 1 (14:13):
To release it.

Speaker 2 (14:15):
Culture says bigger house, newer car, better stuff. But we
heard from Jesus this morning don't store up treasures on earth.

Speaker 3 (14:31):
But store up treasures in heaven. Your generosity.

Speaker 2 (14:41):
It funds ministry, It fuels missions, It helps young and old.

Speaker 1 (14:52):
Learn about Jesus.

Speaker 2 (14:57):
It creates community. It brings hope to people who need
a fresh start to embrace and understand healing, forgiveness, and
the empowerment of what our faith can do when we

(15:19):
are connected.

Speaker 1 (15:20):
To Christ as Lord and Savior. So here we go again.

Speaker 2 (15:27):
Next Sunday, before we celebrate Thanksgiving in our homes, it's consecration.

Speaker 1 (15:32):
We'll figure out, Lord, what would you have me do?
What would you have me do?

Speaker 2 (15:39):
But note this, it's a chance to say, God, you've
bless me. I trust you, and I want to be
a part of what you're doing through this church. And
that's an important differentiation. You're not giving to a church Heavens.

Speaker 1 (16:05):
No, when we give, we give through a church.

Speaker 2 (16:09):
If we keep it here and not use it, we
are violating that gift. But when we give through the church,
we realize we are doing that as a means to
be able to reach people with the love of Christ.

Speaker 3 (16:25):
We had a big, marvelous milestone.

Speaker 1 (16:29):
In twenty twenty five. We got out of debt.

Speaker 7 (16:35):
Wow, long haul, and it's somebody be thinking, well, there's
no debt, so I'm doing something else.

Speaker 1 (16:48):
Church doesn't need it. Church, believe me, it's not what
the church needs.

Speaker 2 (16:54):
If there ever was a time we need to give
more than ever, it is right now, because right now
we can do more than ever because we're not paying
the lender. We're paying and investing in the Creator. And

(17:15):
to have this understand or this idea that well, I
give less, we don't give because of the need of
an organization.

Speaker 1 (17:24):
It's realizing that.

Speaker 2 (17:25):
My life, the value, my treasure, is what I build
for the Kingdom of God in heaven. And so I
want to encourage you as you you know, we're congregation.
We stand before God. No one tells anyone what to give.
I believe tithing is the beginning point.

Speaker 1 (17:40):
That's where I am. But you've got to decide what's
right for you.

Speaker 2 (17:44):
And just to say, okay, Lord, are you going to
get the first fruits? Because we can do more now
than we've ever been able to do for the Kingdom
of God, and to do.

Speaker 1 (17:59):
Less would be wrong. So let's be a church.

Speaker 2 (18:06):
That continues to give with joy, that serves with love.

Speaker 1 (18:16):
And shows the world that Jesus is worth everything.

Speaker 3 (18:26):
Because he gave everything to us.

Speaker 2 (18:32):
Let's let go of a dinosaur. Okay, would you please stand?
Let us pray together. I have any Father, We thank
you for your abundant generosity towards us. You have blessed

(18:53):
us in so many ways, and Lord.

Speaker 3 (18:58):
We acknowledge that all we have comes from you.

Speaker 2 (19:06):
Teach us to be faithful stewards of your gifts, to
give generously and cheerfully, knowing that you will provide for
all our needs as you have always done. Use our lives,

(19:28):
our resources, and our hearts to bring glory to your
name and to advance your kingdom. We pray in the
name of Jesus.

Speaker 1 (19:44):
Amen.
