positive coach and personal
trainer. I love business andfitness.
Kailey Rowan (00:12):
Do you
Tara (00:13):
have the tools you need to
be a rock star in fitness? A
healthy love of yourself andhelp from me in sifting through
health news will do that.
I've got fitness topics
and, yes, rock stars aren't
born. They're bred in experienceand fire. Let's do this
together.
Hi there, and welcome to
plus fitness with Tara, the
podcast. Today, I have KayleeRowan on today. She's an
entrepreneur. And, I just wannasay thanks for joining us,
(00:36):
Kaylee. And why don't you
Kailey Rowan (00:36):
tell us
Tara (00:37):
a little bit about your
business?
Kailey Rowan (00:39):
Hello, everyone.
Yeah. I own a brick and mortar
gym, North County Fitness andPerformance. It's located in
Vista, California, which is justNorthern San Diego. I've owned
it for eight years.
I can go on a little bit morebackground of it is I opened it
eight years ago as part of afranchise. I don't need to say
the name. And I had a five yearcontract and, you know, at the
(01:02):
five year point, they said, youknow, you can either rebrand or
sign a ten year contract. And Isaid, well, you know, after
COVID and all the things I'dgone through, I'm very grateful
because it got me started, but Ijust didn't like the direction
that the company was going inand the leadership just wasn't
what I was looking for. So I,went on my own.
In 2022, I rebranded to NorthCounty Fitness and Performance,
(01:24):
and it's just been a fun andwild journey since then of just
growing. And, yeah, three yearsinto that one, but eight years
total of my
Tara (01:32):
gym. Awesome.
Kailey Rowan (01:33):
So I was so bad.
Tara (01:34):
Awesome. So how so how do
you know the square footage of
your space? Like
Kailey Rowan (01:38):
Yeah. It's I
always say 8000. It's
technically, like, 7953. Oh,yeah. Yeah.
Yeah. Right. I just say eight. That little extra. I'll take the
front part of the parking spotin the front.
That's so cool. Yeah. 8thousand's worth it. It's like
my big baby. That's what Ialways tell people.
It's my big baby with a bunch oflittle adult babies inside of
it.
Tara (01:56):
Yeah. So fun thing. I
actually ran a fitness club for
about, five years and had twolocations. One kinda next to
each other. One was like apersonal training marketed as a
rehab kind of, like, trainingarea.
It was basically just basicallyfor people to find one on one
sessions.
Kailey Rowan (02:10):
Mhmm. And then
Tara (02:10):
we had a personal training
club next door. But it was it
was a lot of fun, but it wasalso very stressful. I think I
was managing at 1.9 people, andit was just two locations. And
Kailey Rowan (02:18):
after all, I was
just
Tara (02:19):
I and then my body was
like, you're burnt out. Do you
know what I mean? So, like
Kailey Rowan (02:22):
Oh, yeah. You
know? That feeling. People
always ask me if, like, I'mgonna open a second one and I'm
or third. I'm like, you know,I'm my space is so big.
I'd rather build within itfirst. And if Yeah. Once I get
all the systems and everythingdone, especially after
rebranding, it's just kind oflike me finding my groove and,
which why I joined e women theyear I rebranded because I was
ready to, like, take that stepof, like, learning more and
(02:42):
growing. And, yeah, I was like, you know, I'm good with one. I
mean, there's so much you coulddo within one space too now,
especially with the onlineworld, and we haven't even
tapped into that, which issomething I wanna do in, you
know, in the future.
Tara (02:53):
Yeah.
Kailey Rowan (02:53):
But, yeah, I mean,
it's a people I think it sounds
so great to open a gym. Right? And then there's just, I know. I
mean, just like anything withentrepreneurship in general. I
love my gym.
It's amazing. But, you know, there's been plenty of times in
the last, you know, eight yearsthat I've just wanted to quit
and stop because it's just it'sso much. But I keep showing up
(03:15):
because I do I do love what Ido. And I think about that. I'm
like, you know, I'm always gonnacoach, you know, but now I have
I've taken on more of, like, theCEO, position of, like, really
focusing on my business andtrying to find that happy medium
so I can still coach becauseI've gone to the point where I
wasn't coaching at all and I wasmiserable.
So I have to have a little bitof coaching in on my life just
to keep me sane. And then therest of my day is focused on,
(03:38):
you know, building a brand, doing the back end fun, all that
fun admin computer stuff that Inever did before.
Tara (03:46):
My favorite thing was,
like, having to double check and
do payroll every every twoweeks, every Thursday because I
couldn't trust my bookkeeper todo it because they kept messing
up sometimes. And, you know, therevenue agency, Canada federal
tax collectors, they don't theydon't like mistakes. You know
what I mean? So it was just so Iwould do it, send it off to him,
have him check it. He's like,oh, so and I would use, like,
(04:06):
the online calculator they haveavailable for businesses to do
it in.
And but I would like every youknow? And I just said to myself,
that was the most, you know, detailed I got. You know what I
mean? I would rather you know,it it led me having a fitness
club led me into Academy ofMasters in kinesiology, which is
great. But I had to laughbecause I'm definitely work in
progress, but I'm I do not missnot having to do payroll like
(04:26):
that Because I was I would Iwould literally, like, close the
door and, like, you know, peoplewould be like, knock knock
knock, and I'm like, nope.
Like
Kailey Rowan (04:33):
Nope. I need an
hour. Like, it's
Tara (04:35):
just it's not happening.
Kailey Rowan (04:36):
Well, you got
absolutely I'm glad
Tara (04:37):
you're finding time to
coach. So so how is your,
ongoing fitness nutrition goingwith yourself while you while
you run the club?
Kailey Rowan (04:43):
Do you
Tara (04:43):
work out at your club?
Kailey Rowan (04:44):
I do. I have a
garage little garage gym too.
It's funny because I'm, like, people are like, why do you
like, you have a huge gym. Whydo you have your own garage gym?
Like, because, like, no onetalks to me when I'm in my
garage.
It's just me. And but, yeah, Ido work out at the gym.
Currently, I've been kind of in,like, I call, like, a off
season. I I got into Olympiclifting, a few years ago. And, I
mean, I did it a little bit incollege, and I got, you know,
(05:07):
certified in Olympic lifting awhile back, and then I kinda
fell off of it.
And I've tried a bunch of thingsover the years, powerlifting.
Now I coach powerlifting. I havedone triathlon sprints. Kind of
I I just I like to stay active,obviously. I've been an athlete
my whole life.
I've played basketball I playedbasketball since I was nine.
Tara (05:23):
Yeah.
Kailey Rowan (05:24):
But yeah. So I got
into Olympic lifting, but I
kinda need my body needed abreak after this past year of,
like, just putting in a lot ofwork. So I've been working on a
little bit more endurance thelast six weeks. I've been doing
a endurance program with one ofmy coaches, But I'm gonna be
getting back into Olympiclifting. I just really love it.
It's fun. It's technical. It'sefficient. Sometimes all I need
to do is this main, you know, lifts and then and it could take
(05:45):
me thirty minutes and then I canget on with my day. Some days it
can take me an hour or sodepending on my time.
But I always get strengthtraining in every like, three to
four days a week, I strengthtrain. I really focus on my I've
kinda shifted from, you know, being so, you know, strict on
make sure you get your cardioand all that to just getting my
daily steps. And then I havesome intentional, you know,
(06:07):
cardio just for my I call it,you know, my building my engine,
make sure my ticker's gone andYeah. Whatnot. But what I've
seen over the years is just byjust simply walking, like, it's
just it's just so much betterthan not and you can, you know,
burn a lot more just by walking.
For me, it's more just thementality and keeping my mind
sane, especially Yeah. Again, working all day. You gotta just
(06:28):
move, move your body. And that'skinda where my business has
shifted too. Like, just get yourdaily movement in.
It doesn't always have to be sointense and strict and
structured. Obviously, if youhave a specific goal to
something, you know, having astructured plan, it will get you
there faster. Yeah. But thereality is is like as long as
you can move your body a littlebit every day, like at least
(06:48):
twenty, thirty minutes, likeyou're gonna be good. Like
you're not only gonna it's gonnahelp you feel better, but you're
gonna feel stronger, you'rementally gonna feel better and I
can guarantee it's gonna takeaway stress just from that, you
know, twenty, thirty minutes ofyour day.
Tara (07:01):
Yeah.
Kailey Rowan (07:02):
So, yeah, that's
kinda where I'm at right now.
You know, there's some days, like, even if I own a structured
plan and I'm just like, I'm I'mnot feeling a %. So I might
kinda shift it and be like, I'mgonna move still. It's just not
to the capacity, but we're notalways gonna show up a %. But as
long as we're showing up in somecapacity, even if it's giving
10%, that's better than notdoing anything.
Tara (07:21):
Yeah. %. That's awesome.
Kaye, where can people, reach
you if they wanna get in touchwith you as we go along and
stuff like that, and they'retaking notes or, you know,
Kailey Rowan (07:30):
just to get in
touch. I'm on Facebook too. But
Instagram, my my and the handleis coach k underscore Rowan. You
can also email me. That'sprobably the best way, and
that's my first name, Kaley, k Il e y, at north county dot
fitness.
No dot com. No dot com. Justnorthcounty.fitness. It'll get
sent back if you do the .com.But, yeah, those are probably
(07:53):
the best ways, if you ever wannacontact me and chitchat about
fitness.
Yeah. You know, again, eventually, I'll have my online
platform going a little bitmore, but I guess like I said,
I'm really focused on the peoplein front of me right now and
really getting the name outthere for my business, which it
slowly has been I just I chooseto go with things organically
over the years, especially beinga part of a franchise. I was on
(08:14):
other people's time frame. Yeah, and I tend to go about things
like a little bit slower likecomprehending thing that takes
me a little bit longer And Ijust do better going at my pace
and it might be slower thanother people but what I've
learned being you know and bewoman and just being around more
entrepreneurs is that we have tojust do what's best for us and
not always being like everyoneelse. And now that I am my own,
(08:35):
you know, CEO and just fullcontrol of my business, along
with my business partner, I'mjust able to I feel better.
Like, I'm not as stressedbecause I'm like, I'm going at
my pace. I'm getting my thingsdone. I'm getting my three
things per day done, like Sandrasays. But yeah.
Tara (08:53):
Yeah. And and like she
always says too, you know, it's
easier to check on the cashregister ringing if you have
everything working for you inplace. You know what I mean? So
you're not completely, like, drawn in by the busyness of
being an entrepreneur, like, inactually doing the stuff that
matters so that your businesscontinues to thrive. And, like,
I'm sure you agree, come how youjust compared endurance and, you
(09:16):
know, Olympic lifting.
It's almost like this is a longendurance race, you know, as an
entrepreneur.
Kailey Rowan (09:21):
So For sure.
Tara (09:21):
You've you've just taken
steps to shift, join Ewing
Network, and go from franchise ato self employed owner. That's
big, and that's cool, and it'sexciting. But it's also just
like, oh, you know? Now I haveto kind of, you know, readjust.
Right?
So Yeah.
Kailey Rowan (09:37):
So you're always
navigating, you know, obviously
being an entrepreneur, and it'snever ending. And I think it's
been cool to be a part ofeWomen. I think it's been I
think I'm on my third year, now, because I hear a lot of Sandra
talks about a lot of the samestuff and all the calls, and I
try to be on all the things justbecause even though I've heard
the things before, there's justthere I'm not always ready to
implement certain stuff. Yeah. And now I'm finding after
(09:58):
spending so much time the lastfew years on all of these calls,
on the plus calls and then I'mtrying to talk every week.
I I'm starting to implementthings that, like Yeah. I wasn't
ready to maybe before. I wasjust kind of taking it in and
soaking it in, and now it'sorganically happening. I'm like,
oh, this is what she talkedabout. Now it's happening.
Great. Okay. She's right. Itworks.
Tara (10:19):
And Oh, it's almost like
watching a movie again. Do you
know what I mean? Because, like, the first time you watch
Kailey Rowan (10:23):
it, you're
Tara (10:23):
like, woah. That was
amazing. Same time you watch it,
like, I had no idea. I missedthis whole section.
Kailey Rowan (10:27):
You know
Tara (10:27):
what I mean? You're just
like but you saw the whole
thing. You know what I mean? Andyou're just like and you thought
you got it all, and then youcome back and watch it again.
You're like, oh, there's a fewkey parts that I can now absorb.
You know? Like, everything indivine time. Right? So Yeah.
Like, it's just really cool thatthings work out for
entrepreneurs by re re listeningto her repeat stuff.
I constantly still I've been amember of You Women Network
since 2012, and I'm stillthinking, how can I how can I do
(10:51):
this? And then I think of thethree pillars. I'm like, okay.
Bring it back to the basics.Start from ground zero and work
up a foundation.
Do you know what I mean? Andit's just like you have to have
that kinda systematic thinkingin place. Otherwise, you get
distracted by all the businessand stuff going on.
Kailey Rowan (11:04):
There's always
something that's gonna
Tara (11:06):
And something will suffer.
Yeah. Okay. So my next question
is because this is great so far. What motivates you to get up
every morning and be inbusiness?
Like, you sound like you're busythe whole thing, but what really
what is your, you know, drive?
Kailey Rowan (11:20):
The people. The
people, to be honest. I mean and
that's it's always been thepeople, I think, but even more
so, like, the times when I amjust not wanting to do it
anymore or stressed out. I walkinto my gym and I'm like, this
is why I do it. You know?
It's like we always tell people, you know, at my gym is what's
your why? Right? It's alwaysremember your why. Like, why are
(11:41):
you doing this? And your why isgonna change over time as well.
But, like, if you can alwaysremember what your why is, it's
gonna help keep you going. I usethat not just with fitness, but,
like, with my fitness goal, butwith work, like, I keep going
and I keep showing up even thedays I'm like, I'm gonna quit
today. I'm done. And then I wakeup the next day and I'm like,
no. I'm fine.
(12:01):
You know? I'm good.
Tara (12:03):
You go into the fitness
club and you're surrounded by
them. You see them. They talk toyou. You know? Mhmm.
That's a really cool thing tohear because it means that
you're setting up a structurethat is about the people and not
about the dollars coming in. Doyou know what I mean? Yeah.
Kailey Rowan (12:20):
I mean, you know,
I've had to focus more on the
dollars just making sure we're,you know, making rent and all
the things. But the reality isis, like, if the people aren't
happy and people aren't comingin, it's I'm not gonna have a
business. They're what keeps usgoing. And it's not just the
members, it's my team. And I'vegone through the ringer since
COVID finding, you know, theright people, to be at my gym.
(12:41):
And I have such an amazing teamright now and trying to continue
to build them, not just ascoaches, but human beings. Like,
I'm constantly at this point, like, just trying to be better
at what I do. Like, this is mycareer, and there's other areas
I can obviously shift into, but, like, I'm gonna have my gym. I
don't have a end point with mygym. Like, this is something
I'll do forever.
It's just learning how to bebetter in it, learning the
(13:02):
delegate, which I'm gettingbetter. It's just it's taking
some time. But the people arejust incredible. They and, you
know, I've had people the lastfew days actually come up to me
and to say, you know, this placeis just incredible. This this
community is amazing.
I've had people that have beenwith me for the last eight
years, and they've gone throughthe ups and downs this gym has
gone through and the rebrand andlosing coaches and getting new
(13:23):
coaches in. People have stuckwith me and, you know, it's cool
to get those compliments becauseit's so easy to get caught up in
all the things happening withinthe business that you sometimes
can forget about the people andwhat they're feeling. And having
them tell me, like, this placekeeps me sane, and this is my
just my space to go when I needto get away from my my crap. So
(13:48):
I know.
Tara (13:49):
But that's great. Like, I
just I think what I hear in
there a lot is that you, like, also get a lot of energy off of,
like, helping people. So thatway, when they succeed, you feel
the reward. Do you know what Imean?
Kailey Rowan (14:02):
For sure. It fills
me out.
Tara (14:03):
And so to keep the
business going, you've engaged
with the eWomen network so thatyou can make sure that you have
stuff in place so thatcontinues. So people always have
a place to go and, like, a placeto kind of meet and a place to
work out in, you know, in a safeenvironment. And I think what I
love about what I hear from youbecause I understand the whole
thing with trainers and coaches, like, going through the hiring
(14:24):
and firing and eventual kind of,you know, negotiations you have
to go through in order
Kailey Rowan (14:28):
to see if
Tara (14:28):
the right that coach is
the right person for you. It's
like you've managed to perseverethrough all of that and create a
place of not, I would say, serenity, but a place where
there's a safety net so peoplecan go drop their stuff at the
door, work out, enjoy things, and then leave. And that's Yeah.
Huge because so many people havea problem just walking through
(14:49):
that door.
Kailey Rowan (14:50):
Mhmm. Yeah. I just
had someone actually come in
recently. She's, I think a nieceor cousin and my friend of one
of my good friends and she cameup to me and she said, look,
I've been to, a lot of gyms andshe's like, this is the first
gym I felt comfortable and she'slike, alright, because we we
have group strength andconditioning classes, and we
also have open gym. And she camefor an open gym one day, and
(15:13):
she's like, I've never feltcomfortable working out by
myself in a gym because I alwaysfeel like everyone's looking at
me.
And she's like, I she's like, people walk by me and they they
if anything, they just encourageme. And she's like, I just feel
so comfortable here. She said,so thank you for, like, having
this space. And that's importantto me. I mean, we're it's hard
to go into gyms.
It can be very intimidating foreveryone, you know, especially
(15:34):
people that are getting startedin, you know, fitness. Even my
gym, sometimes walking on,they're kinda just intimidated
because it's a gym. But I'mlike, we we have the name. Like,
we get good vibes out to people.Like, people walk in and I'm
very In my business like I'm notan owner that's not present
You'll get go to a lot of gymsor other businesses where the
owner isn't the owner or the ceowhoever isn't really at the gym
(15:57):
They're you know somewhere elsein the world kind of telling
people what to do like that'snot how I choose to run my
business I like being a part ofit and because I know I'm a
piece of what helps thiscommunity continue to grow.
Yeah. So yeah. So I keep showingup because the people keep me
there. I mean, there's only somany people are gonna get me up
at three in the morning to showup and wake up and open the gym
at four. Right?
Tara (16:16):
Yeah. I love that, though.
So so this kinda ties into a a
question that I had asked lateron, which is, you know, what do
you love the most about what youdo? And I think, you know, which
just tied into a lot of it. ButI I also hear the personal
satisfaction you get in knowingthat when you open that door and
you're in the club for open gymand stuff like that, you're also
(16:37):
kind of seeing the actualphysical results of staying open
with each person.
Do you know what I mean? Not,like, results as in say, like,
yes. They improve their healthand their fitness. Sure. But
you're just you're seeing theactual like, people need that
stress relief, especially in ain a time now where there's a
lot of stuff up in the air.
You know, stress relief is ahuge thing for a lot
Kailey Rowan (16:59):
of people.
Tara (17:00):
And, you know, I I just
hear that you're there to kind
of, like, absorb that energy ofjust knowing that they need
that. Do you know what I mean?
Kailey Rowan (17:10):
Yeah. I mean, it's
only gonna help you just and,
again, it doesn't have to besomething like, if someone comes
in and they're like, I'm justhaving an off day. I'm like,
cool. Like, just move then.Like, move go through the
workout.
Like, we have it all programmedfor you. The coach is there
telling you what to do. Like, you can't go a %, just do
something. And if you start tofeel off, get on the treadmill
and just walk. You've made it inhere.
And a lot of times, I was like, hey. Look. You made the first
(17:30):
step. You made it into the gym.So if all you do is walk today,
great.
Yeah. You did something. Youshowed up. But the hardest part
is showing up and walking in thedoor. Once you're there like you
got us to help you
Tara (17:40):
do
Kailey Rowan (17:40):
something and then
people again I always tell
people once you work out Likeyou no one ever feels crappy
necessary after you work out.You always feel a little bit
better Yeah. Right? Just becauseyou've gotten your endorphins
going, and it doesn't have to belike, you don't have to be an
hour the gym for three hours.Like Yeah.
Go in there. If all you got istwenty, thirty minutes, do it.
Show up. And then, you know, check that mark off. Like, I
(18:03):
hey.
I feel good.
Tara (18:04):
Yeah. Yeah. Okay. So,
everybody, you can find Kaylee
Rowan on Facebook and Instagram.I'll let her share her handle
with you and, you know, and heremail because, like, it's
important to hear your voice saythose things rather than just
mine.
Kailey Rowan (18:19):
Mine will
Tara (18:19):
be in the notes.
Kailey Rowan (18:21):
Yeah. Again, like,
my Instagram is coach k
underscore rowan, r o w a n.That's my last name. And then,
my email is my first name,kaley, k a I l e y, at north
county dot fitness. I'mavailable if anyone ever just
needs some advice or motivation.
I just I love being able to pumppeople up. You're in the San
(18:41):
Diego area. We offer groupstrength and conditioning
classes, open gym, personaltraining. We get a little bit,
My gym literally offers a littlebit for everyone, and we have
people that have been liftingfor years to people that have
never picked up a weight intheir life. We have as young as
12 working on classes to asolder as, you know, like 75, 80.
And I don't even like to saythat's old because, you know
Yeah. If we work out, we'regonna live longer.
Tara (19:03):
Yeah. Okay. So I do have a
question. I know we just chatted
about it briefly as we'regetting grounded. Do you have a
bucket list?
Like, is there something youwanna do? Like, besides you
because it sounds like you'vereally met your passion, your
your love. You have a partner. You have your own place. You're,
you know, constantly working onmaking sure the entrepreneurship
(19:23):
continues forward.
Right?
Kailey Rowan (19:25):
Yeah.
Tara (19:25):
But is there something,
say, when it hits the mature
growth cycle and you're able tohave so many people come in
without too much pulling andpushing and you know, in that
you know, you can kinda focus alittle bit on Kaylee. Like, what
Yeah. What would a bucket listbe? Like, I don't know. It could
be anything from, like and Ijust asked this question without
putting too much pressure, butit could be anything from
traveling somewhere to a dog to,you know, even just being having
(19:49):
the freedom to take an entireday off and just do whatever you
want.
You know what I mean? So what'sthe bucket list for Kaylee?
Kailey Rowan (19:57):
Traveling is
really, I mean, what I love to
do. My wife enjoys it as well. And this year, we decided to
stay within The States, just toI mean, save money. You know,
there's so many spots in TheUnited States we can check out
if we want to or do littlestaycations and just really
buckle down on, and work. So buttraveling is really why I work
so hard as I love to travel.
(20:17):
I think seeing new places, whether it is in The United
States or outside, usuallyleaving our country, you kinda
just you really understand lifea little bit more. And, my wife
and I went to Thailand last yearfor Oh, wow. Last year or year
before for our honeymoon.
Tara (20:30):
Nice.
Kailey Rowan (20:31):
And, yeah, it was
just an incredible experience
and just opens your eyes to somuch. And and that was the first
time I went away for ten dayswithout anything work related,
which is incredible. So thatwould be, I guess, the bucket
list is take another week off ofshutting off completely and not
checking my phone. And,hopefully, it's still it's easy
to check your phone when you'retraveling. But when you're
(20:53):
fifteen hours ahead of time,it's like, there's not much I
can do from here.
So Correct. I would say that's athat's a bucket list to skip to
traveling again in the withinthe next twelve months. But,
yeah, it's like I mean, I'm kindof living my bucket list. I'm
just trying to be better at whatI do I'm trying to be better
entrepreneur CEO. Stillcontinuing to be a better coach.
Tara (21:11):
Yeah.
Kailey Rowan (21:12):
Oh, yeah. I get
excited when I talk.
Tara (21:14):
Yeah.
Kailey Rowan (21:14):
But it's funny
because I've had people ask
like, I've had questions asked, like, you know, what's your
ideal day? Right. And I'm I'mdoing it. You know? I'm just my
weeks are I'm other than justgetting more structured, I'm I'm
living I'm living the dream.
I coach basketball still. I dostrength and conditioning, city
college here in Palomar, and I'mrunning my business. So it's
(21:35):
just trying to be better andallow myself to have a little
bit more freedom at some point.Yeah. But I love going into
work, and I do have one daywhere I don't go into the gym,
which is always nice.
Thursdays is my day away. Yeah.Because Cool. You gotta have
that then. You gotta have yes.
Yes. A %. My child and I'm anintrovert. So, like, again, the
people are what keeps me going, but then the people drive me
(21:56):
crazy sometimes too. So I haveto take at least a full day away
just to, like Tell it.
And sometimes I don't leave myhouse. I literally will just be
like me and the dog. We're I waslike, we're hanging today, dude.
We're gonna hang around thehouse or take myself on a date,
do whatever. Yeah.
But everyone's gotta do it.Like, that one even just that
one day is Yeah. Saves saves me,and it saves everyone else too.
Because if I see too manypeople, sometimes they, you
(22:17):
know, get a little snappy.
Tara (22:18):
Yeah. Well, you know,
especially if you're an
introvert too because, like,running club, I'm I'm, like, I'm
I'm the introvert who had tolearn to be an extrovert for
networking and all kinds ofstuff. You know? So it's always
kinda left me, but, yeah, there's nothing like being able
to just basically close the doorand be like, I don't have to do
anything today
Kailey Rowan (22:36):
Yeah.
Tara (22:36):
Except whatever I want in
the house and don't have to talk
to anyone. I don't want it tocall me. I unplug the phone. Do
you mean I put it on do notdisturb?
Kailey Rowan (22:44):
Yeah.
Tara (22:44):
I don't even go online.
You know? Like, you know, I may
scroll later because, like, I'mstill addicted to Instagram, but
I have to laugh because it's notas if I would do it while I'm
trying to catch up on contactsand clients and the whole thing.
So Yeah. But it is kinda funnybecause I just really appreciate
that you realized you neededthat day because that's me
Kailey Rowan (23:04):
a while. Huge.
Yeah.
Tara (23:06):
I know.
Kailey Rowan (23:07):
But, yeah, I've
I've been a I think it's been
about a year or so since Iimplemented the Thursdays as my
day away. My whole team knows ittoo now. And, like, obviously,
if there's an emergency, like, let me know. But, like, it's an
I'll still work a little bit,but I just I don't go to the
gym. It's just my I'm gonna workout.
It's in my garage. It's outsidedoing whatever. But I kinda fill
my fill my cup up with thethings that make me tick, which
(23:29):
is not being around people, music, reading, just, again,
taking myself on a little day, anything like that. So highly
recommend that for anyone justyou know, we call my business
coach. I worked with for a bit.
He called it your how's youryour CNS check-in? You know,
your, you know, central nervoussystem check-in. Like, where are
you? Where is your CNS rightnow? Like, are you high?
Are you feeling great? Or areyou, like, on this dorsal? I'm,
(23:51):
like, I don't have anything leftin me. And so I always check on
that. How's my CNS?
And, like, if it's not great, like, what are the things that
lift you up to fill that cns upso you can give back to people?
Because as entrepreneurs, we'regiving to people all the time.
Yeah. Like, you can't take thatmoment for yourself. Like, you
you will hit a wall.
Then I hit the wall plenty oftimes, and finally enough times
(24:12):
you hit it, you're like, oh,let's figure it out. Now let's
go over it.
Tara (24:17):
Okay. So if there was one
thing we could help you, EWIM
network or anyone listening inthe public, what would it be?
Like, do you have anything youwant us to share? Do you have
any requests that you'd like, you know, Ewing network members
specifically to do? You know, like because I think one of the
things about Ewing network isgreat because you can log in
each week on your own time Mhmm.
Take time for half an hour andlisten and then do the
(24:39):
follow-up. But you can also askpeople questions, you know, and
more information and relate topeople in the chat and, like,
look to see who's in themembership windows. So you can
say, I'd like to follow-up thatperson on LinkedIn and just ask
them a few questions because, like, maybe they've had an
interesting experience thatrelates to what I'm going
through.
Kailey Rowan (24:58):
Do you
Tara (24:58):
know what I mean?
Kailey Rowan (24:59):
Yeah. Totally.
Tara (24:59):
What what what would you
ask your network if we were,
like, physically in front ofyou? I know it might be kind of
a tough one, but we can layerthrough it. You know?
Kailey Rowan (25:06):
I mean I mean, the
the reality is with my business
is just getting the name outthere, North County Fitness and
Performance. If you know anyonein the North County San Diego
area, you know, send them myway. Yeah. I then we just we
need to get some more bodies inthe building. We're doing great.
Again, organically, we used tohave a lot more pre COVID. Now a
lot has changed since COVID asfar as, like I mean, when I
opened my gym, there wasn't thatmany gyms around where I am, and
(25:29):
now, you know, you can find oneeverywhere. Yeah. But, yeah,
just anything like that. Andwhat else?
I guess any tips on, like, marketing and whatnot? Like,
I've gotten better at thatstuff. That's not my you know,
my business partner does more ofthe sales and marketing on the
back end, but I still I'm tryingto understand these things more.
Tara (25:50):
Yeah. And
Kailey Rowan (25:50):
I am stubborn. I
am an Aries, so I, like to
always do all the trendy thingsbecause, like, I want to be
unique and different. So Yeah. Iguess if anyone ever has ideas
how to go about, like, you know, different because obviously the
gym business is lots of trendingthings all the time, but, like,
I don't like all that stuff.Like, I like to be organic and
just get people in organically.
(26:10):
Yeah. So any tips on that, I'malways welcome.
Tara (26:13):
Yeah.
Kailey Rowan (26:13):
But, yeah, just
getting the name out there.
Because I said, once people getinto the gym, we don't have a
problem pretty much closing themother than if they just
financially aren't Right.Capable to do that. And we even
try to work with them. I know Ihave my my limit that I won't go
under, but, yeah, we have waysto go about that.
But just getting the name outthere. It's grown a lot in the
last, you know, couple years. SoYeah. Just chugging along.
Tara (26:37):
Yeah. So one of the things
that I love about that too is,
like, sharing the name, but alsothe organic stuff. But one thing
I think you could definitely, you know, find is that, you
know, social media doesn'talways translate into people
walking through the door. Mhmm. But if you we had a problem in
well, we still have it.
(26:57):
I mean, I've seen gyms gothrough it. And then, you know,
some of my friends' gyms closedduring COVID, but, like, we had
summeritis. Do you know what Imean? Because we're stuck in
Canada with, like, winter. Soeverybody works out in winter
because, like, there's nothingto do
Kailey Rowan (27:10):
with the snow.
Yeah. What else am I doing?
Tara (27:12):
And then, like, spring
hits, and we could see start to
happen. People start to slowlydrop off. And then kids get out
of school and bam, there's noone in the gym. You know what I
mean? Like, everyone's out,which I don't blame them for.
But we had to turn into, like, doing workshops on the weekends
or something to work around it,you know, when people had
planned vacations and stuff likethat to do. Even just one day
afternoons. And it was just itwas the kind of thing where it
(27:34):
was good, but it involved, like,a rethink of the business plan
in order for it to work properlyso we could have some income
showing it so I could show it tomy investors that, yes, we were
working, and we were trying to,like, combat some rioters. But
every year, we just faced it.You know?
Yeah. And I don't blame them. You know? We we even had
trainers do outdoor boot camps, which is popular for a while.
But when August hits and we get, like, % humidity, I mean It's
Kailey Rowan (27:56):
not gonna be
great. Yeah. Yeah. Totally. To
Tara (27:59):
it's getting people to
sign waivers where they're like,
if I pass out and die on fromdehydration, you know, I won't
sue you.
Kailey Rowan (28:05):
But, you know
Yeah.
Tara (28:05):
Yeah. So I just you know,
I think what's great is that,
you know, you have the passion. You have the drive. You've
reached that you you've you'vebeen working on it for for three
years. You've really set up areally good funnel as to, like,
broadening what you wanna do.
So
Kailey Rowan (28:21):
That's kinda what
I'm doing now. I mean,
workshops, that's actually on mymeeting notes for next week with
my team, to be more consistentwith that. Even if it's, like,
one a quarter, I'm actuallyrepurposing something that I got
from, Sandra, and that is I'vedone this lifestyle program for
the last few years, and it'stwelve weeks. And the last three
(28:41):
to six months, I've been workingon making modules to make it
online. So not only if you'redoing it in person with us, you
get a little bit moreaccountability, but the program
but in the next by the end ofthis quarter, it will be
available to sell online, andit's videos of me breaking down
nutrition, workouts, all thatkind of stuff.
So I'm excited. It's been a hardI feel like I'm in school again
(29:02):
and doing, like, PowerPointsand, like, I have delegated some
of that stuff. But Yeah. I'mexcited because it's I've pushed
past my perfectionism on thatand Yeah. Because I'm like, it's
not exactly what I was wantingit to be initially, but, like,
I'm like, I'm putting it outthere.
And then again, I'll justrepurpose that again. Yeah.
Yeah. And after that, I'll makea workbook. So, you know,
because I'm big on, like, reaching people that however
(29:23):
they learn.
So some people learn by reading, some people learn by watching.
So So I wanna have every avenueof that. And then yeah.
Workshops.
Tara (29:31):
Boom. And so that's what I
found. So this trainer I follow
on Instagram, he's in London,UK. His name is Andy Fung. He's
really great, but he'shilarious.
He just had a baby with hiswife. So, you know, he is
repurposing videos from, like, ayear ago and just adding a few
different things into it andthen, like, putting them up
because Yeah. They have anewborn. Yeah. Their life is
(29:52):
totally different.
Yeah. So but it's working. Doyou know what I mean? Like, he's
still maintaining that steadymarketing voice. He's still
reaching the people he needs toreach to.
He's still promoting when hedoes, like, a twelve week or
sixteen week program for, like, you know, online coaching and
stuff. So it does work, but he'smade the shift. And he said he
had to prepare for it. Do youknow what I mean? Because I said
to him, I mean, he's standingthere with baby in one arm and
mixing protein drink in theother, and I'm like
Kailey Rowan (30:14):
I love that.
Tara (30:15):
On you. That's crazy.
Like, you know, but I just I
feel like it's, like, you haveto do that. You know? You have
to adjust your sales.
You never know what year eachyear can bring. And, I think the
cool thing, that I hear a lot isis that you've been open enough
to adapt to different trendsgoing on, but you're looking for
more ways to keep you know, asthe maturity cycle and the
(30:35):
business cycle happens to keepfresh feet coming in the door.
You know? Yeah.
Kailey Rowan (30:40):
Yeah. And you have
to keep moving things around
too. I mean, so much changedafter COVID at least in the fit
I mean, I think for everyone, but especially in the fitness
industry. And I think it's justbeen even the, you know, the
people that always, like, oh,January is the big year you guys
are gonna get a flood. I'm like,it really hasn't been like that.
Yeah. Like pre COVID, it was.Now I'm like, sure. We had a
great January, which I'mgrateful for, but like last year
wasn't like that. And it's likeYeah.
(31:01):
Now I'm trying to find newtrends as far as like the gym
goes. Like, when are people in?Like you said, you guys have
your summer hiatus. And we weactually surprisingly are pretty
decent, except I think it's Julythat is usually I think that's
the one month all the parentsare like, okay. Let's get our
kids on vacation before they goback to school.
Yeah. So I'm learning some ofthat stuff. But, yeah, it's it's
kind of you just kinda have toyou have to look ahead, but know
(31:22):
that it might change. And if itdoes, what are you doing next?
Or Gotta shift.
You know, you've been tryingthis. It's not working. So what
now? Like Yeah. Brainstorming.
And that's kinda what I do on myThursdays when I'm not here. I
call it my creative flow daybecause I do anything that's
getting my for me, it's likeanything I'll do anything that
gets my brain going. Like, somepeople can journal every
morning. I have to be in acertain space to, like, get my
(31:42):
thoughts out. So if I'm workingout, I always have my journal.
If I'm reading, I have myjournal. If I'm listening to
music I have my journal becauseusually my brain starts Going
like crazy. I'm like just get itdown on paper and then I go back
through I'm like That could be acool idea to make some more
money or I bring it to mybusiness partner who's more
numbers person because I'm like, idea idea idea. Then she's like,
(32:03):
okay. That's not realistic.
I'm like, okay. That's fine.Let's move on to the next. So
you have to keep trying. And andand I think that's what I'm
learning too is, like, I I liketo I like to fail because I
mean, it sucks to fail, but italso you're gonna grow from it.
And for me, yeah, I just Ilearned from it, and that's
where I I wasn't able to do thatwhen I was part of a franchise
(32:25):
because they have a certainsystem, and I respect that. I
was like, but that's not why I'mowning a gym. Like, I'm owning a
gym to try things. And if itworks, awesome. We're gonna keep
it at it.
And if it doesn't, like, okay.Or maybe how could we approach
that differently? Yeah. You knowwhat I mean? That how could we
make this better?
Do I need more people to getbought in
Tara (32:42):
Yeah. To what
Kailey Rowan (32:42):
I'm trying to do.
Right? Yeah. But you have to
just be willing to to try it.Man, if it doesn't work, it's
okay.
Tara (32:48):
Listen. From the
entrepreneur, you have to learn
how to fail, like, a thousandtimes sometimes to get the first
time that you need. Do you knowwhat I mean?
Kailey Rowan (32:54):
So Yep.
Tara (32:55):
You know, we've all been
there. Cool. Okay. So we have
about five minutes left.
Kailey Rowan (32:59):
Mhmm. And I
Tara (32:59):
just wanna, have you do a
shout out where people can reach
you again and then talk about isthere anything you wanna mention
before we wrap up that wehaven't talked about? Because,
like, you know, we've covered alot of ground, but in case you
have a promotion or somethingcoming in the works that you
want people to look on yourwebsite for or something like
that, just just let me know. Youknow? Yeah.
Kailey Rowan (33:17):
Yeah. Nothing too
crazy. Again, you guys can find
me on Instagram, coach kunderscore rowan. Email, my
first name, kaley, k a I l e yat north county dot fitness.
Nothing too I mean, honestly, the first quarter has been kinda
nice.
We've been just kinda dialingin. We have a promo every month
and we kinda change things up.The only exciting thing for our
gym is we're doing a each eachquarter I try I'm trying to this
(33:40):
year at least because we've had, some fundraisers we have later
in the year. And now that I'vebeen doing them, it's a lot
easier. My calendar's trying toplan ahead.
But this in March 22, we have a,spring fling, which is something
of a fun I'm I'm bringing it upbecause it shows you again who
our community is, is we're wehave fun. You know? My slogan,
(34:02):
which no one's here, but it sayslift, play, move is our one of
my our slogan I came up with iswe lift weights, we like to
play, and we just move our body.So our spring flame, we're gonna
have a ping pong tournament, aMario Kart tournament. And now
that I just got a basketballhoop in my gym, we're probably
gonna play some horse.
Very cool. So we like to havefun. You know? I I wanna make
(34:22):
sure, again, people are movingin some way that it doesn't
always have to be the strictlift weights all the time. Sure.
Again, like I said earlier, structure is great, and we have
that 90% of the time at the gym,but we also have fun, you know?
And so we have, you know, we'llhave during the summer, we'll
have a barbecue on the beach, little bonfire, and we have some
fundraisers later in the year. But, yeah, I just keep finding
(34:44):
ways to keep people showing upand having fun. And something I
didn't mention that and I'veaccountability is my big focus
this year, not only with my gym,but my my team as well. Yeah.
If you don't show up to the gymfor a couple weeks, you will get
a call from me or one of my teammembers. People that have been
with me for a while, they'lltypically hear from me and I'll
either text them or I'll sendthem a video and say, hi. I
(35:05):
haven't seen you in a coupleweeks. Where are you at? And
they're like, oh gosh.
Okay. I'm coming. Or I'll thinkabout it, and usually they end
up coming in. But, yeah, I thinkthat's biggest piece just we're
an amazing community. I'm sograteful for the people that
have supported me over theyears.
Again, we've had through somewe've had some rough patches,
let me tell you that, and wekinda laugh about it now. And I
(35:26):
know I'm sitting back going, things are feeling good right
now, and I'm like, I knowsomething's gonna happen. At at
some point, there's somethingelse that's gonna hit. But at
this point, eight years in, I'mlike, cool. Like, we had COVID
hit.
You know? I at this point, if Ican get through COVID, I can get
through anything. And then wehad a flood flood, and I think
the year after I rebranded, wehad a huge flood in the gym that
(35:48):
put us out half of the space forsix months. So my 8,000 square
foot space, I could only use,you know, a quarter of that. But
we made it through, and I wasable to actually the silver
lining, I was able to kind ofremodel the gym and repaint
things and kind of really makeit my own.
And we made it through that. Andso now all of us are like, you
know, I I had a ceiling leakwhen it rained one day, you
know, a couple weeks ago and Ilaughed. I was like, that's
(36:11):
nothing. I'm like, what else doyou wanna pull at me? Right?
We can just we can we we getstronger through adversity.
That's one of the the sayings atPalmer College where I coach on
is strength through adversity.Like, we we get better through
dealing with all the things thathit us in life is Yeah. We get
stronger and we learn. And,obviously, it's a it sucks at
(36:32):
the time, but I just know nowit's temporary.
Like, I don't react the way Iwould have, like, years ago when
I first started my business isYeah. When things happen, I'm
like, okay. Like, how do wenavigate this? And so they're
going, oh my god. Like, what arewe gonna do?
I'm like, no. You have to staycalm. Yeah. Because people are
looking to you
Tara (36:50):
For leadership.
Kailey Rowan (36:50):
Figure it out.
Yeah. Yeah. And I'm very
vulnerable with my team, and I'malways I always let them know.
Like, guys, I'm always learninghere, and I'm trying to grow
just as much as you're trying togrow.
So just thanks for supporting meas I navigate this business
life. I was like, because I wentfrom coach to coach to owner
overnight. Yeah. I never I nevermanaged anyone. Yeah.
(37:11):
You have
Tara (37:12):
to flip. Yeah. Yeah. Your
mindset. Everything.
Kailey Rowan (37:15):
Yeah. So that's
why, I mean, e woman's really
helped me to believe in myselfand that I am a CEO and not just
someone that owns a gym. Yeah. Ihave the power to, like, do a
lot of good and and really helppeople and pass that along. And
I'm really grateful for thiscommunity that we have here, you
know, at eWomen.
It's you know, there's timeswhere I'm like, I don't utilize
it to to the capacity that Ishould in watching videos, but
(37:38):
then, you know, I get on thesecalls with Sandra. I'm like, so
good. I was like, I can't youknow, I I gotta keep going. You
know, it's worth it.
Tara (37:44):
Yeah. Okay. Well, thank
you much, Kaylee, for being a
guest on my podcast today. Itwas really fun to have you and
great insight and fantastic totalk a bit about your club and
everything you've been through. And, really key takeaways, I
think my viewers, my audience isgonna totally listen to.
And, and, of course, we'll shareyour stuff and stuff. I'll have
to look you up on Instagram andshare away. I mean, I may be in
(38:08):
Nova Scotia, but my gosh, withthe World Wide Web, you can tick
into anything. So I'm so excitedabout this online program
coming, and, yes, have a greatMarch. That'll be fun.
Kailey Rowan (38:19):
So Thank you.
Yeah. Well, my last little bit
tidbit for everyone because thisis what everyone in the gym
knows me for is trust theprocess and enjoy the journey.
It's not all gonna happentomorrow and the things you're
gonna you're not gonna rememberthe end piece. You're gonna
remember what it took to get towhere you wanna go.
So just trust that process andenjoy the journey along the way.
Tara (38:37):
Awesome. Thank you.
Kailey Rowan (38:38):
Alright. Not a
problem. Alright. Bye, everyone.
