Canada. She is better known asChicky. She's a laker. Yeah,

she's a singer, songwriter, speaker, life coach, and mental health counselor.
And she's also owner of Catherine's Kitchenin Snellville, Georgia. How are
you today, I'm doing absolutely wonderful. Thank you. You know, I
got a chance to hear you singmaybe a couple of years ago, and
you were fabulous. I'll never forgetyou. Sang Summertime and it was a

beautiful rendition of summertime. Tell usabout your musical career. That's not what
we're here to talk about, butwe got to talk about music. Yes,
my musical career. I started outand singing in the church and later
on in high school. I attendedthe High School of Music and Art in
New York City. I was pickedup by Ry Ayres. My mentor was

Donald Blackman, rest his Soul.I was picked up by ry Ayres.
I started recording with him in highschool and the next thing you knew,
I was on the road. Andit's been a wonderful experience. So in
terms of my music, I singjazz gospel. I'm classically trained, and

(02:06):
I am actually coming out with aCD, an inspirational gospel CD very soon,
somewhere about that and just a littlebit. But it's exciting. I'm
sure. Now, what's it likenot to be necessarily on that touring schedule
where you're in a different city everyday? How did you adjust coming out

(02:31):
of that? Coming out of that? It was a little difficult at first,
and I just started using other giftsand talents that God bestowed upon me.
That's education, working as a schoolteacher, my baking, wow on

(02:52):
Catherine's kitchen, that's yeah. Now, who is Aunt Catherine? I'm Catherine
is my aunt. She's from Southampton, New York, from Church of God
in Christ. I learned a lotof recipes for my aunt as well.

As my mother, and I justfelt that I had to name the business
after her. Wow. Wow,Now did she live long enough to see
this all contri furition? Yes?Actually she passed spent almost a year now
ninety five years old. Wow,Now what's she's still giving you pointers in

(03:34):
the kitchen? I'll tell you story. My family and I we traveled to
Southampton for a Thanksgiving dinner and Isaid, well, what would you like
me to bring? She said,well, I want you to bring you
know, you do the cakes.I said, oh, is that it?
She said yes. So when wereached the house, I went in

(03:55):
looking for the containers to put thecakes in that I brought. I brought
about three different cakes. I boughta butter pound cake, the family's favorite,
layered pineapple coconut cake, and achocolate layer cakes. So when I
looked around to put the cakes inthe containers, they were all filled.

(04:16):
I said, who made all thesecakes? He asked me to bring the
cakes and she started laughing, OhI did, I said, okay,
Auntie. So, needless to say, we had a house full of cakes.
So I don't think it was somethingshe could just give up wasting you

(04:40):
I think, so that is cute, cute, cute. You know,
we got a family of older auntiesand they have not relinquished cooking to us
yet. I think it's going togo on until they leave this earth.
They are not going to relinquish thecooking to us yet. Yeah. Absolutely,
Yeah, with your So, we'rehere to talk about mental health today.

(05:05):
You're a mental health counselor and alife coach, which, my god,
we all need so much talk aboutfor a moment, the state of
mental health, because it appears thatall around us it has just gotten crazy
all of a sudden, I thinkover COVID things just it just ramped up.

(05:29):
So talk about what the challenges arefor us as citizens right now,
right now. It's really sad becauseone thing, many individuals do not want
to get into counseling. Yeah,they say, well, if I go
to counseling, that means I'm crazy, right right. It's a preventive measure

(05:49):
so that you won't be crazy,insane or having difficulties. And that's the
sad part about it. They feelthat they can speak with a friend or
a pastor, which you can,but we have to really think about the
therapeutic treatment of it, just assubstance abuse. That's part of it as

(06:11):
well. You have to go tothe AA meetings, but you still have
to see a therapist, so youhave to deal with the medical mental part
of it as well as support,which would be an AA meeting with the
COVID. Many people have just suppressedtheir feelings because the world has changed.

(06:34):
We have no control over it,and I really don't think that individuals can
really deal with that, you know, the change of we have to wear
a mask now, there's a lotof virtual work now. You don't leave
your home, so you tend tobecome depressed, and it's very difficult when

(06:58):
you don't find the treatment. Yeah, I encourage everyone. Mental health is
to help you and you have tohave that therapeutic relationship with your counselor in
order for it to work. Inorder for therapy to work, you know,
I almost feel that every business corporationinstitution now needs some sort of mental

(07:30):
health wellness counseling, something added intotheir day to day operation, because it
doesn't matter, you know, ifyou're a CEO of a company or if
you sweep befoors. There's still somemental issues going on, some mental health
issues going on, and I feellike it's just a part of where we
are today. Yes. Absolutely.I spoke in DC about a month ago.

(07:58):
I was on the panel talking aboutmental health and domestic violence. Actually
this is domestic violence Month as well, and a lot of people who are
dealing with domestic violence situations really needthe help and they're afraid to get the
help. But one of the otherpanelists, there were two guest panelists,
it was myself and it was aretired police officer, and we discussed the

(08:22):
importance of mental health therapists and lawenforcement officers to come together and see if
we can bridge the gap when theyget a call about a patient who is
just having an episode, a manicepisode. So the police officer, she
said, well, what are wesupposed to do if the therapist is calling

(08:43):
us for help? And that wasa very good question. And it's not
to shoot the person, it's howcan we come together? So we have
to find a way if there's aperson that has a patient rather that has
a button knife, so do youshoot to kill? Right? And we
find ways to de escalate working together, and yes we can, and we

(09:09):
have to understand that offices are afraidas well. Absolutely that so if you're
going to, you know, shootsomeone a police officer, can it be
in the lake or something like thatif you have to instead of ending the
individual's life, who was just havingan episode for today right for that moment.

(09:33):
It's beyond the control. They werenot asked to be that way.
Yeah, it's so true. It'sso true. You you founded the company,
it's your nonprofit called the Inspirational Spiritof the Phoenix. Tell us about
that group. Yes, Inspirational Spiritof the Phoenix. I started that many
years ago. It actually started outas a sleepover. So it was my

(09:58):
close friends because we were both travelinga lot. We were into our different
lifestyles, marriage, children, andmyself, I was touring so I wasn't
home very much. And there wereso many of my close friends who were
doing very well in life with theirprofessions. And I said, Okay,

(10:18):
I'm going to get everyone together andI'm going to have you know, someone
speak about you know, the psychologistshealth and wellness exercise. And we had
Satamabe Benjamin from South Africa, andshe came and spoke and talked about apartheid,

(10:39):
how it was growing up in SouthAfrica with apartheid. So all of
my friends. It was about fifteenof us and we just gathered on the
floor just listening to this beautiful woman, she was about sixty something years old
at the time, just telling ushow it was growing up in a part
time and making a life for herself. And I wanted when I began the

(11:05):
organization, I wanted something that wouldstand out, a name inspirational. I
wanted everyone to be inspired. Andthen I thought about the phoenix. How
you go through so much and itconsumes itself by fire and you come out
shining. Wow. And that's howI came up with the name. So

(11:26):
after I had the first gathering,my girlfriend said, you know, Tania,
you have to do this, youknow, more often, And that's
what I did. So I started, you know, just inviting women speaking
of the areas of expertise. Wegive scholarships for colleges for students. We

(11:48):
feed the homeless, the needy,single parent households. We had the first
vegan gluten free food drive in Columbia, Maryland. So we were supported by
different stores and we do boxes ofhealthy foods to the families, single parent
households, and it was just wonderful. And what we did we included high

(12:11):
school students that needed credits and theywere able to come in. They drew
pictures on the boxes to make itfamily friendly and it was a wonderful experience
and we were able to feed overforty families. That's amazing. Yeah,
that's amazing. You've got an eventcoming up in this next week. Talk

(12:33):
about that event for a moment.Yes, that event. It's going to
be at the Well. We're talkingabout transformations towards healing, self care,
and empowerment at the George Pearce CommunityCenter. So I'm looking forward to people
that need help and healing and that'sa gift that God has given me.

(12:56):
Healing through touch, healing through voice, and dealing with again domestic violence month.
People need so much help, andit's not just for women, it's
for men as well. So I'mgoing to be speaking about therapeutic exercises for

(13:16):
healing, self care, taking careof yourselves, eating healthy body, mind
and soul, therapeutic exercises such asmindfulness, mindfulness meditations, music therapy,
and we're going to have a greattime bonding friendships. We have a saxophonist
who'll be coming in, rock CellCarter, And of course you're going to

(13:39):
have Aunt Catherine's kitchen desserts all right, and I know that you will be
giving some coping skills. I thinka part of dealing with this life and
today is that sometimes we just don'tknow how to cope with situations. And
it's so important to have to developthe skills, absolutely because many times people

(14:05):
don't know what to do, wellwhat should I do? And I'm going
to be teaching some of those skillsso they can find out how to heal
themselves and become holy. That ismy goal result given, and I work
with each and every client patient individualwhere they are to help them become whole.

(14:30):
Now, how are you are youtaking new patients? How is that
working for you right now? Yes, I'm taking new patients now and I'm
doing it virtually. So they callme for appointments. Well, sometimes they
want to meet in person. Wehave to be very careful with COVID,
continue to wear the mask and justbe really careful. Yeah. Yeah,

Yeah, yeah, you know youtalk about and I've had other conversations
with you about about meditation and howto do that. A lot of people

(15:43):
feel like I really can't meditate.As soon as I close my eyes,
my mind starts running away and Ican't focus on the meditation. So I
think meditation is very important, themindfulness and being quiet for a moment.
It is so much happening around us. Sometimes you just need to get somewhere
and be quiet. Yes, youneed that quiet time. And you also

(16:07):
need your naps as well. Ohgod, yes, yes, yes,
naps are very important. It helpsyou with a story, yes, especially
you know, and I know whenI was a young mom, it was
one part of the day work gotthe kids the second part of the day,
but in between that time, Itrained my kids to give me thirty

(16:30):
minutes. Even when they were little, they said when mom's door is closed,
and I put a little clock onmy door and I said, you
can come back at this time.Don't bother me. I want you to
go so I can be a goodmommy for you. On the second part,
because you've got homework, you've gotdinner, you've got long you know,
you had all this other stuff andit was like having two lives.
That was WHOA, just too much, you know, But that was a

(16:53):
really it was a really good thingthat you did. You set the boundaries
for yourself so you practice. That'san example practicing self care. Yeah,
I had to. If I didn't, I would have been a terrible mom
because because your job is stressful.A lot of people have stressful jobs.
And not that it was a badjob, it was just a lot,

(17:14):
you know, And so coming homeand trying to be that best parent,
you need a minute. You can'tgo from A to Z at work and
then pick up the kids, comehome and then start right there. You
need to breathe in between that.Yes, yes, absolutely so. I
love it. I love it thatyou're going to be doing mindfulness and therapeutic

(17:36):
exercises. We all need that rightnow in this day and time. We
really really do. You alluded toearlier that you are doing new music.
I'm so excited because you have sobeautiful I was so excited to hear what
you're going to present. When isthat new music going to be out?
The new music should be out inabout a month. Come down, yes,

oh yes, yeah, so youhave to walk away. Sometimes you can't
do both. It just depends onwhere you are in your career, right
right. And I just I tooka break because I wanted to dedicate that
time to my children because I knowthat they needed me. And I dedicated

that time and I was able tocome back, make a phone call to
an ad to several a list musicians. Tania, I'm ready to work with
