Speaker 1 (00:03):
Thank you for joining me today on Good News with
Twinda Black. We're we are discovering some of the most
inspiring trials to triumph stories and empowerment moments. Call up
a friend and let them know it's time for some
good news.

Speaker 2 (00:30):
Welcome to Good News with Twinda Black.

Speaker 3 (00:33):
Hey, I'm your hosts where we talk with folks from
all walks of life about their good news because ultimately
we celebrate our brothers and sisters when they are doing well.

Speaker 2 (00:44):
I want you to sit back, relax, and enjoy.

Speaker 3 (00:47):
My next guest HI today is Darius Washington and mister
Darius is an artist. Now, the funny thing is they're yes,
it's been out there a long time.

Speaker 2 (01:03):
But I think, is this your coming out party again?

Speaker 3 (01:07):
Like you know, Redo, Regenerate, renew, This this is all
new absolutely YEP, debut debut gospel choir album being released
that this is kind of yeah, definitely reintroducing myself and
reintroducing the gift of music to back to the world.

Speaker 4 (01:23):
YEP.

Speaker 3 (01:23):
So how long were you out or were you ever
out of the industry so to speak?

Speaker 5 (01:30):
Man, So I would say, released my first single in
twenty twelve and started touring, started doing a lot of things,
and then of course got married, had babies, did the
whole family life kind of reprioritized something for me. So
I would say, it's been about a decade over ten years.

Speaker 2 (01:53):
Oh oh my goodness, it's.

Speaker 4 (01:56):
Going along the way. But yeah, majority of.

Speaker 3 (02:00):
Why Now, what made you say this is it was
God speak continue with a holy gross whooping you telling
you using your gifts and talents what happened?

Speaker 4 (02:08):
Right? Know? A little bit of all of that.

Speaker 5 (02:12):
God has a way of absolutely getting our attention and
sometimes things transpiring our lives with a personal, professional ministry, whatever,
whatever have you. He has a way to get your
attention and every gift that He's put on the inside
of you, He's going to get the glory out of
it well, one way or the other.

Speaker 4 (02:30):
So it was just time.

Speaker 5 (02:32):
Honestly, I felt that it was confirmed through prophecy, through
just everything, and I knew that now was the time.

Speaker 4 (02:38):
And I can tell that because it's no toil this time.

Speaker 3 (02:42):
See that's awesome, that is awesome. So so you just
said something. So what lessons did you learn from the
first time you stepped out there till this time?

Speaker 5 (02:53):
Hmm, that's a good question. I think lessons learned. Definitely,
always be obedient to the whole spirit. Follow exactly what
he said. Sometimes God gives us, especially as creatives, producers
and and creatives, he gives us a very particular vision,
in a very specific vision. I need put like that
in a very specific manner that He wants us to

(03:15):
carry it out, you know, and sometimes we deviate from
that because.

Speaker 4 (03:20):
You know, people don't understand it.

Speaker 5 (03:22):
So maybe I'm doing it wrong, you know what I mean,
Like this is not normal and.

Speaker 4 (03:26):
People are singing like it doesn't go like that.

Speaker 5 (03:28):
So then you start the second guest question, very instruction
that God gave to you. I learned anything, it would
be obey God. You know what I mean, exactly what
he said, do it exactly that way.

Speaker 2 (03:40):
That is awesome. That's awesome.

Speaker 3 (03:43):
Now Darius is a contemporary Christian gospel artist, multi dimensional artist, producer, entrepreneur,
and he's a pastor.

Speaker 2 (03:55):
How about that? Nothing like a good singing pastor. I
love that.

Speaker 3 (03:59):
So talk about.

Speaker 2 (04:02):
You know, I don't know which.

Speaker 3 (04:04):
Came first, did this this renewal coming back into the
journey or were you were a pastor first?

Speaker 4 (04:11):
Yeah, definitely was a pastor first.

Speaker 5 (04:13):
So about I'd say about five years or so ago,
the Lord called me into ministry.

Speaker 4 (04:18):
I was leaving Atlanta.

Speaker 5 (04:20):
I owned the daycare center, and I started my first
business in Atlanta.

Speaker 4 (04:23):
Uh literally out of the trunk of my car. That's what.
That's a whole another story within it.

Speaker 5 (04:28):
I saw that I started my first business in Atlanta,
and it came to a season where we reached capacity
in that building, and I was like, what am I
going to do? And the Holy Spirit just kept us
talking to me. It's time to shift. It's another season.
You've served this season, and now I'm calling you into
the one thing that you've been running from.

Speaker 4 (04:47):
Just leave my sheep and shepherd, shepherd, the people of God.

Speaker 5 (04:52):
And so I relocated from Atlanta to Florida, back home
home state, and God called me to twahassee, out of
all cities. Started a very progressive and contemporary ministry there
on campus with the students there. And it's been, like
I said, about five years now stepping into the pastor role.

(05:12):
So this is after that.

Speaker 3 (05:15):
Okay, So then you moved to Tampa Avenue, Tampa, which
is my hometown, your hometown, and tell us about the
ministry there.

Speaker 5 (05:26):
Yes, absolutely, and Tampa is really an extension of the
church that we started in Tallahassee.

Speaker 4 (05:30):
So God always gave me a vision to pastor creatives.

Speaker 5 (05:34):
Right, He told me that if we could get a
hold of the people who control the message and messaging
in the world, whether it's people who create commercials and
draftic designers, film producers, all of that.

Speaker 4 (05:49):
We could reach them, then you know what I mean, we.

Speaker 5 (05:51):
Could control the messages that are sent out to the
world and redirect that towards a message for the Kingdom.
And so he just gave me the daunting has to
pastor these young creatives, these millennial creatives, these stubborn, hardheaded creatives.

Speaker 4 (06:06):
And in this capacity.

Speaker 5 (06:08):
And uh, I remember a church called me from Tampa,
very well known church in Tampa called Bible Based Fellowship
Church and off Earth Road. They said, hey, we're in
transition and we need a creative and worship parts pastor here. Well,
we had services on Friday nights in Tallahassee, so our
sun were wide open.

Speaker 4 (06:25):
I was chilling on Sundays. Uh.

Speaker 5 (06:27):
They literally traveled me and flew me up, gassed me
up in Tallahassee to Tampa, which, for those of you
who don't know, it's like a four hour drive, about
an hour so flight back and forth every weekend for
about a year before the Holy Spirit was like.

Speaker 4 (06:40):
Hey, Tampa is now calling you here.

Speaker 5 (06:44):
We made Tallahassee up like a virtual campus and then
we put roots in Tampa.

Speaker 4 (06:49):
Since then, Avenue Tampa has been.

Speaker 5 (06:51):
The ministry that well, just like the Tampa branch of
that of that ministry, same vision, same concept. Pastor, the
creatives do stuff out of the box, out of the norm,
and that's that's who we are here in Tampa.

Speaker 3 (07:04):
So, Darius, you know that is something to pastor creatives.

Speaker 2 (07:10):
Of course, I'm a creative by my production. My producer
is great.

Speaker 3 (07:13):
I mean, and we deal with creatives throughout our ministry
as well.

Speaker 2 (07:19):
That is a difficult task.

Speaker 3 (07:21):
My God, he must have given you so much grace
to do that.

Speaker 4 (07:25):
Absolutely, that is amazing.

Speaker 2 (07:27):
So and I mean, I know you can't tell it all,
but talk about some.

Speaker 3 (07:31):
Of the things that specifically are for creative.

Speaker 2 (07:36):
Is when it comes to the Body of Christ, I'm
so curious.

Speaker 5 (07:39):
Oh yeah, I think first and foremost is just a
very disruptive and radical presentation of the gospel.

Speaker 4 (07:47):
That's number one, creative love and very.

Speaker 5 (07:51):
Out of the box, non traditional presentation of the gospel.
So that was the first thing that God graced us
to do, right, which we reimagined sermons. And I know
we were going to catch slack from it. People were like, Oh,
that's not a.

Speaker 4 (08:06):
Church, y'all. Y'all crazy over.

Speaker 2 (08:07):
There, y'all over there.

Speaker 4 (08:09):
Yeah, you know, yeah, crazy stuff.

Speaker 5 (08:11):
I took our what was a traditional sermon three points
clothes who prophesied?

Speaker 4 (08:17):
Do you know?

Speaker 3 (08:18):
You know? Church?

Speaker 5 (08:19):
I took that and I reimagined those messages, those into
a short film, or reimagine those points into an event,
or reimagine that sermon into a music project. So our
sermons now or series were broken out amongst events, broken

(08:41):
up amongst tracks on an album, broken up amongst episodes,
maybe in a podcast or a short film, you know
what I mean.

Speaker 4 (08:49):
So that, within itself was the first out of the
box thing.

Speaker 5 (08:51):
What do you mean You're not going to pre You're
not going to open up the scripture and give us,
you know, line upon line preps. I said, absolutely, the
scripture is baked right on in that music, in that podcast,
And I really do. I use the word in everything
that we do, and there's always a message that someone
can take something from but it's just a disruptive presentation
of the gospel that I think is attracting a lot

(09:13):
of the younger people.

Speaker 4 (09:15):
Just different.

Speaker 3 (09:16):
So yeah, and you know, creatives are different. I don't
care how old we are. We are we are just
a different breed, you know.

Speaker 2 (09:22):
And that is fascinating. I love it. Probably if I
was in Tampa, i'd be up for your church.

Speaker 3 (09:28):
So that is fascinating, it really really is.

Speaker 2 (09:34):
So how do you keep it fresh? How do you
keep that fresh?

Speaker 4 (09:39):
Man?

Speaker 5 (09:40):
There is a there is a man of God, I'll
use that term here in Tampa.

Speaker 4 (09:47):
His name is Apostle Mark Jones.

Speaker 5 (09:50):
Amazing came in and did a leadership training for our
ministry one time, and he said, I want to give you,
guys a principle that will keep you out of the
spirit of offense and that will.

Speaker 4 (10:02):
Keep you into the fullness of the Kingdom.

Speaker 5 (10:05):
And he says, any idea you have always know, live
by this principle.

Speaker 4 (10:11):
There's more where that came from.

Speaker 2 (10:12):
Wow. Wow.

Speaker 5 (10:14):
So as far as keeping it fresh, to answer your question,
is always keeping yourself aligned with the Holy Spirit, with
the expectation. There's more where that came from.

Speaker 2 (10:25):
I love that. Oh my goodness. I love it.

Speaker 4 (10:29):
Oh man, this is damn. This is it.

Speaker 5 (10:32):
It's like, no, there's more. God is alive, he's having breathing,
he's communicating. The Holy Spirit is communicating to all of
us through every season. And as long as I'm alive,
we're gonna be fresh. It's gonna it's gonna be innovative.

Speaker 2 (10:46):
I love it. Oh my goodness.

Speaker 3 (10:49):
So you just I don't know when you did it,
but I imagine it had not been too long ago
for your live recording of Live by Faith.

Speaker 2 (10:58):
I know it was in Tampa. When did you do
that live recording?

Speaker 5 (11:01):
Actually, on my birthday last year in August, I held
I hosted a birthday celebration slash Gospel Acquire live recording,
and even that within itself, we gave a platform to
many of the creatives that are part of our church ministry.

Speaker 4 (11:17):
They wrote songs on there.

Speaker 5 (11:19):
Not that I could have done it by myself, right, guys,
But that wasn't that wasn't the mission. The assignment was
to build a platform for the entire creative community.

Speaker 4 (11:30):
So they were members of my church.

Speaker 5 (11:32):
Who normally do a photo and video that got a
chance to film the music videos. You get what I'm
saying people who got a chance to write versus and
write choruses, you know what I mean. We already knew
that the hand of the Lord was on this project,
so we know what. You can just tell his favorites

(11:54):
all over it. Doors are opening that man, we couldn't
even imagine. So we know that the project is going
to go. But look that the platform we just created
for all of these people that are part of the ministry.
So that happened in August of last year. Uh, and
we released We did a single release, I mean not
a single release. We did an album listening or party
in January of this year. And that was cool because

(12:14):
that was in forty X so.

Speaker 4 (12:16):
That was really cool.

Speaker 2 (12:18):
What's forty x?

Speaker 5 (12:19):
So, like we released it, like we have a lifestyle
brand out at our ministry called.

Speaker 4 (12:23):
Scene Herd felt.

Speaker 2 (12:25):
I saw that, Yeah, I saw that.

Speaker 5 (12:26):
So like we believe that the expression of our gifts
should be seen, heard, and fell. So not just listening
to the music, but it was literally an immersive multisensury
experience to where when they're listening to it, they're watching
the music video, but I got a fire performer and
they're literally blowing like flames of fire, snow machines, like

(12:49):
snow was falling on people. They could fill the snow
and they could they could fill the wind whenever we
did like big ballads. I mean it was really like
it was. It was you know, it was so cool
and many people from the industry were there. Kiera Shre, Carlton,
Carlton Humees, Cheryl Jackson, Jonathan Nelson, Vanessa Belle Armstrong.

Speaker 4 (13:10):
I mean the room was star studyed.

Speaker 5 (13:13):
And everybody was amazed because they had never seen anything
like this in over fifty years of their gospel.

Speaker 3 (13:18):
That is total production. Oh my gosh, that was production.
You know whoa Oh my god, it sounds amazing.

Speaker 2 (13:28):
Now do we get to see that anywhere?

Speaker 5 (13:31):
Yes, on my on my Instagram page, social media pages,
there were like recap footage of that event there, so yes, absolutely.

Speaker 2 (13:39):
Okay, So let's.

Speaker 3 (13:40):
Talk about Live by Faith because, like you said, Jonathan Nelson,
be slave, Vanessa bear Armstrong. Uh, so many people were
included in this and your first single is greater with
the amazing Vanessa bel Armstrong.

Speaker 5 (13:57):
Oh my gosh, that project those features alone, Like I
was just I was just honored that they said, yes,
let's start there right, They said yes, and then they
connected with the music in such a way to where
now they're pushing it on their platforms and their paid
they're sharing and they're encouraging people to be a part
of it. But they each other were encouraging me. You're

(14:18):
talking about people who have Emmy Awards, Grammy Awards.

Speaker 4 (14:22):
Double Awards. They've seen it all, heard it all, felt
it all, no pun intended. But co signing on my.

Speaker 5 (14:31):
First project, that's that's God. That nobody but got nothing.

Speaker 4 (14:36):
But that's right, and that's a Belle Armstrong.

Speaker 5 (14:39):
She texted me, she said, she said, man, you do
things in such excellence. She said, when I do my
next project, I'm calling you because I want you to
be a part of whatever it is that I do musically.
That's that's pretty huge for me to get a type
of endorsement, that type of support and just love from
all of them. Everyone could expect and they kill them too.

Speaker 4 (14:59):
They sank it.

Speaker 2 (15:00):
But that's when Jessic came management. She came in like
a lioness song. I was like, who you're the girl?

Speaker 5 (15:08):
Yes, yes, effortlessly of course, sleep and be slave.

Speaker 4 (15:15):
You know the special thing about b slave is that talented.

Speaker 5 (15:19):
People don't realize that he Out of the Box was platinum.

Speaker 4 (15:24):
That was a platinum album.

Speaker 5 (15:26):
Yes, and he has since then and almost twenty something
odd years have not recorded live like a gospel live
recording to the two. Obviously, he's done Christian music and
R and B, and he stepped into other genres. He's
toured with Patty, with Bell. He's done all the stuff. Right,
He's won the Emmy. But someone said Nolan Crew had said, man,

(15:48):
you brought b slave out of retirement.

Speaker 4 (15:49):
I said, no, no, no, no, no, no no no,
I been out there killing it.

Speaker 5 (15:54):
I said, this special moment that he allowed me to
share with him to where he's like, hey, I'm coming
back into that live recording church space again, a space
that for years he shunned away from. Honestly, you know
what I mean, and rightfully so with some of the
things that that kind of happened. But you know, I'm
grateful that God used me as a light yes and

(16:17):
then beacon to just show just show love and say, hey,
you know what, bro, we still love you, we still
love your music. Amazing, there's a place for you right here.

Speaker 3 (16:25):
Man, Yes, yes, yes, So talk about this choir thing
you you love choirs.

Speaker 2 (16:30):
Were you raised in the choir? Did you sing in
the choir?

Speaker 4 (16:33):
Yeah, the choir.

Speaker 5 (16:34):
I didn't sing in the choir, but I was raised
around choirs. So I grew up in my path. My
dad is a pastor. I grew up in an Apostolic church. Yeah,
so growing up the Sunday school conventions, general assemblies, all
of that.

Speaker 4 (16:52):
You know what I mean, you walk into churches that right.

Speaker 5 (16:54):
Sixty people spread across the choir standing, they're shot and
they got their robes in the Oregon.

Speaker 4 (17:00):
Sports still good time. I mean, we have some church.
We have some knockout, drag out church.

Speaker 5 (17:04):
So I always tell people that in these interviews that
that's the soundtrack of my childhood. That was my first
point of reference for like great music, great comical music,
and for me when the Lord said, hey, I want
you to do something timeless and nostalgic, it.

Speaker 4 (17:21):
Was no option. We got a choir, right, we have
to have a choir.

Speaker 5 (17:26):
I put it out on Facebook. Within two weeks we
had fifty something my voices signed up. They said, whatever
you're doing, Darius, we want to be a part of
it because we.

Speaker 4 (17:32):
Know how you roll.

Speaker 5 (17:33):
And that's great because God has definitely given me a
great reputation of carrying excellence, ministering and excellence. So when
we put stuff out and people are like, they jumping
on it, they're ready to rock and roll because of
just a favorite.

Speaker 3 (17:47):
God has allowed us to Yes, yes, yes, yes, So
are you set to tour this year?

Speaker 4 (17:54):
Maybe a little bit? We already are, like, so right
now we're going to we are.

Speaker 5 (17:58):
We've started a thirty city press and promo tour and
we're in churches a part of that right now. We
are going to have a venue tour next year in
twenty twenty six, but this year it's all press and promo.
So we're going introducing the album to church congregations because it's.

Speaker 4 (18:13):
A little bit of everything.

Speaker 5 (18:14):
It's quartet on there, raising worship, simonic selections on there,
worship on there. It's a lot very diverse, but it's
it's it's a it's a roots album. It's a gospel
roots album. So we're taking that to churches in every
city that we go to and then obviously doing interviews
with press like yourself, radio stations, all of the different outlets.

(18:36):
So we're on that. This is like the fourth week
of that tour already. We got twenty six more cities
to go.

Speaker 2 (18:41):
Yeah, that the burns. Yeah, anyway, that's another grace. So
have you been to Atlanta? Are you coming? Oh? You
were just in Atlanta last week.

Speaker 4 (18:52):
I was just in Atlanta. Yep, yep. Absolutely.

Speaker 5 (18:56):
We were able to connect with the church in on
the I would call it, I guess the north east side.

Speaker 4 (19:03):
He'll burn. So New Mercy's right, New Mercy.

Speaker 5 (19:07):
Amazing, amazing ministry. Pastor Jesse Kearney. Mark Brett is the
worship pastor there, and they want me to come in
and share the one of the singles that I actually
featured Jonathan Nelson on Blessed Be. They let me do
that in praise and worship them. People act like that
song has been out for ten years. They got right
with it, started jamming, they knew the words.

Speaker 4 (19:27):
It was easy. It was great.

Speaker 5 (19:31):
Obviously we stopped by Praise one O two point five
to fixed radio.

Speaker 4 (19:34):
We did the whole thing. So Atlanta was really fun.

Speaker 2 (19:36):
We love that awesome awesome.

Speaker 3 (19:39):
So is that one with Jonathan Nelson is going to
be the next single after Greater? Yes?

Speaker 4 (19:45):
Absolutely so.

Speaker 5 (19:46):
It's actually we have three singles that we're pushing, So
we're pushing greater. And then we're gonna push when I call,
which is the new Jack swing kind of vibe with
the choir on it. And then obviously yes that person
worship song I Blessed Be with Jonathan Nelson.

Speaker 2 (20:00):
Nice, nice, nice nice.

Speaker 3 (20:02):
Now tell everybody your social media how they can learn
more about you.

Speaker 2 (20:06):
You have a great website, love it, give them all
that information.

Speaker 5 (20:10):
Absolutely, my social media all across the board, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook,
it all the same thing. Darius W Official, d A
r i U s W Official. You can follow me
there and I connect back. I engage with my people.
I love I love doing that. I think that's the
pastor in me. I love that amongst the people. And

(20:32):
obviously online Dariuslive dot com, d A r i U
S Live, l I v E dot com.

Speaker 4 (20:38):
Obviously people can connect there.

Speaker 5 (20:40):
We have merged seeing her felt that whole line is
available on the website.

Speaker 2 (20:45):
Yeah, that's how you get to do something that out
of there.

Speaker 3 (20:49):
So when you are touring, is there somebody you know
stepping in for you or are you there on Sunday mornings?

Speaker 4 (20:59):
So that's a sing.

Speaker 5 (21:00):
Our church doesn't have a Sunday morning service. Our services
are our services are on Saturdays, so and we don't
have a weekly experience either. So that's the other component
to our us being non traditional, if you will, is
that we typically will have a big, a big experience

(21:20):
because our because we are reimagining our sermons and worshiping
such a creative production, like it's so massive, it's hard
to like do that every single week.

Speaker 4 (21:31):
So we typically do it once a month. Sometimes we
can squeeze in a second event.

Speaker 5 (21:35):
But normally we spend a lot of time marketing and
producing for that big event and then we invite people there.
Now we do partner with another ministry and then they
they we always send our people there on Sundays, you know,
just for supplementation, you know what I mean. I don't
want anybody to feel like they're not being fed. But
that's mainly Our ministry is more as transition if you

(21:57):
will reach an evangelistic type of a church, that it
is like, hey, you're gonna come here every.

Speaker 2 (22:04):
Sunday, same time, same place.

Speaker 4 (22:06):
Yeah that's what.

Speaker 5 (22:08):
Yeah, it's called us too. So we partnered with the
church for that that component of it.

Speaker 4 (22:12):
So yep.

Speaker 5 (22:13):
But there are other ministers and pastors like on our
staff that could fill in for sure.

Speaker 2 (22:17):
That is so cool. Oh my gosh.

Speaker 3 (22:19):
So you know we make it down to Tampa two
or three times a year. I'm gonna have to stop by.
You have to see when you go doing your next event, because.

Speaker 4 (22:27):
I want to see that. Yes, I want to witness that.

Speaker 3 (22:30):
Oh my god, you you are amazing an amazing creative
to be able to.

Speaker 2 (22:38):
You know, sometimes God gives us stuff and we can't figure.
We were like, what I'm gonna do that, you know,
but but it made it make sense for.

Speaker 4 (22:45):
You, right, absolutely, yep, it was. It was tough.

Speaker 5 (22:48):
I ain't know what the crazy part is. The toughest
part of that is is just uh blocking out the noise,
you know what I mean, when you really sit with
what God gives you, When you really sit with what
God has given.

Speaker 4 (23:01):
You, it's really not that heart. It's very simple. You know.
