El dictador Daniel Ortega introdujo una iniciativa de ley ante el Parlamento, controlado por la dictadura, para revivir el Ministerio del Interior, que dirigió Tomás Borge Martínez en la década de 1980, y extinguir el actual Ministerio de Gobernación. La iniciativa de Ley denominada Ley que establece las funciones y estructura del Ministerio del Interior señala en la exposición de motivos es para garantizar el “orden constitucional», pero lo que hacen es concentrar en una sola institución a la Policía y las diferentes direcciones del extinto Ministerio de Gobernación.
