This week, we offer up a commentary track on the hour-long Primus Interstellar Drum Derby finale. Receiving this much video footage of the band auditioning, practicing, rehearsing, jamming, and recording music is so rewarding after years of shelved video-based projects.

You can join in the fun by simply listening in, syncing the youtube video with the podcast ep at the 12:52 mark in the audio, or viewing the synced video at the Patreon site (see "Burn your money" link below).

Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's Josh Freaky. What a couple of dump shits. Hello Primates,
you've found Primus Tracks. Congratulations. There are many places to
find us on the internet as it were. We are
at Primus Tracks on Instagram and threads. Primustracks pod at

(00:24):
gmail dot com is the email address, and if you
are one of the people who frequents Facebook, there's a
Facebook page. You'll never guess what it's called. I am Josh.
I am one of the hosts of Primist Tracks. In
my secure bunker. He is one of the hosts of
Primus Tracks from the thirty ninth floor Primus Tracks Towers.

(00:46):
I believe he's adding some kind of penthouse suite for
newly minted drummer John Hoffman. We'll let him tell us
about that. It's Frankie Beristeine. Hey, Josh, Frankie. We are
in the throes of all kinds of new Primus material,
So we're taking a second straight week away from our

(01:07):
coverage of Wales and Woe to talk Primus. Last time
we discussed the new track Little Lord Fentanyl. Today we
are doing what amounts to a live commentary on the
finale of the Primus Interstellar drum Derby. Who are we
to do this, Frankie. Somebody's got to do it right,

(01:28):
therefore it should be us. You know, a lot of
bad decisions have been made based on the logic of
somebody's got to do it. This is one of them.
I think it will be much more harmless than many others.
So we're going to do that today. You're more than
welcome to stick with us as we talk our way
through the drum Derby finale. We have a couple of

(01:50):
pieces of business to do first, and one of them
is a regular feature on this podcast.

Speaker 2 (02:03):
We got Miscelane, very exciting Miscellane's Debris. This week, a
Spin article was posted where Huff and Less No Well
Let's was interviewed in regards to Hoffman joining the band,
which is is cool because it's kind of a complimentary

(02:23):
article to that really long interview with Huff that we
already discussed. But this little conversation with Less is very
interesting because he revealed that a new Primus album is
very likely to materialize the following year, and he also

(02:44):
wants the claypol And on the Lyrium album out, which
is going to be a concept record.

Speaker 1 (02:50):
He said that it's really out there.

Speaker 2 (02:52):
So if Less thinks that something is out there, then
it must be truly out there.

Speaker 3 (03:00):
Right, It's pretty far out there again, I would imagine,
and he would like to tour the summer with both
bands simultaneously, so that would be really fantastic.

Speaker 2 (03:14):
Delirium and then Primus and both bands are promoting new records.
That sounds absolutely incredible, And I'm guessing Lez is really
excited about Primus again. He said in the article he
was not planning to do Primus this summer. He was
either going to tour with Frog Brigade or with the Delirium.

(03:36):
But he's so excited about Primus with Hoff that they're
going on the road again in the summer. But I
guess at the same time he knows that the Delirium
record has been pushed way too far. So I'm guessing
that twenty twenty six will be an incredibly exciting year
to be a Les Clayboo fan.

Speaker 1 (03:55):
Yeah. Has anybody seen Sean Lennon recently? Is he just
locked up ranch to relax out waiting for Less to
come back to work on the record. He is locked
up at the moment, Okay, So he's like hewell, at
the end of breaking bad. Yes, sitting there, poor guy.
That is interesting news. It's no surprise, of course that
he is excited to work with Hoffman inspired to create

(04:20):
some new Primus tunes. It does sound like they have
made significant progress on that CLD record that last we
heard was halfway done, two thirds of the way done.
I suppose they're in the home stretch now, lots to
look forward to this summer twenty twenty five and certainly
into the latter half and into twenty twenty six. I

(04:41):
think we're going to get a lot of material and
a lot of touring.

Speaker 2 (04:46):
I don't know about you, but this is something that
I personally feel, and some of our listeners as well,
because I read some similar comments on our Facebook page.
But this feels just like greenogahyde Era, that excitement that
list has for the band at the moment, which led
to a new album and tours and deep cuts being

(05:09):
performed again. That kind of excitement I think had not
been witnessed since korenogaheythe.

Speaker 1 (05:15):
One hundred percent. And we have heard some names of
tunes that have been sound checked of recent days, which
we will not reveal, But if those tunes that are
sound checking and fine tuning right now, carry over to
the summer tour. Pretty much everybody will have a great time.

(05:38):
Everyone will be pleasantly surprised, I think, by what they
bring to the table. So a lot going on in
Primusville and even Deliriumville these days. Before we get to
our audacious live commentary, controversial yet brave, or whatever the
phrase you use is. We haven't thanked our patrons for

(06:05):
a little while, and let's do that right now. We've
been remiss in doing that, so I want to thank
all the wonderful folks over at patreon dot com forward
slash Primus tracks. Some of them are watching this on

for your support because it certainly helps keep us going.
It keeps the lights on, and it is really great.

(06:26):

you over there on the Patreon. There are many tiers
of support. We do the Primates takes, every episode, we're
talking about a track, monthly hangouts, and bonus pods and
all kinds of junk over there.

Speaker 2 (06:40):
Your support keeps the motion sensitive leasers active at Primus towers.

Speaker 1 (06:45):
That's true down in your climate controlled storage facilities, slash. Yeah,
that's the one. I know you sleep in there most
nights too, just to keep an eye on things. Yeah.

If you want to join that group of luminaries Patreon

(10:13):
dot com, Ford Slash Primus Tracks. Now the moment you've
all been waiting for, in which two guys who have
no idea what they're doing offer real time commentary on
the Primus interstellar drum derby Frankie. I don't know about you,
but I can guarantee there will be absolutely no gear
talk of any substance. There will be zero musical insights.

(10:37):
There will be commentary of a sort that sound you
just heard as lots and lots of people turning off
the podcast. Okay, of course, this was an hour long special.
Before I press play, I want to thank Primus of
course for doing this. It was the first time in
quite a long while that we got any kind of

(11:01):
video footage from them, and especially something this substantial, substantially. Yeah,
this thorough to even give us an hour long special
for the end is truly special. Also want to thank
agent O for his fantastic editing and production throughout the series,
and Cage and Cage for his great camera work, and

(11:23):
everybody in the credits. Lots of familiar names in the credits,
and everybody did a bang up job putting this together.
It is of the utmost quality. I just had a blast,
you know, watching it for twelve weeks.

Speaker 2 (11:36):
I remember watching the Dream Theater drum auditions back in
twenty nineteen. I don't know when they actually took place,
but I watched those videos on twenty nineteen. Yeah, just
out of sheer curiosity, that's it. I'm not a fan,
but I was just curious about what that process was like.

(11:57):
And if somebody had told me that some years down
the line, I would be watching something similar but done
for my favorite band. You know what, I would have replied,
Girl Jewish either one either one?

Speaker 1 (12:16):
Yeah, I think you know. And it wasn't just dudes
like like us and primus fans out there watching this.
I've seen posts from guys like Mike Portnoy speaking a
dream theater, who said he watched the whole series with
great interest. And Bill Burr of all people, asked Hoffman

(12:37):
for a picture with him and said he was a
fan of the drum derby and of course a fan
of Hoffman's Bill Burr being a drummer himself. So this
apparently captivated a lot of people, and I think we
should all enjoy it together. So what about some covers?

(12:57):
Oh yeah, what do you know?

Speaker 4 (13:01):
Uh?

Speaker 1 (13:05):
What? How did you live?

Speaker 5 (13:07):
Figure it out?

Speaker 2 (13:07):
I love that?

Speaker 1 (13:08):
How did you figure it out? How to accident?

Speaker 6 (13:09):
One time? I can only use one finger for a
couple of wow, so that was the only one I
could play.

Speaker 5 (13:15):
L does a mean one fingered smoke on the water?

Speaker 7 (13:19):
Yeah, and it's actually pretty good Frankie yeah less.

Speaker 1 (13:32):
His tone is brilliant, sounds like he was born to
play this tune. Richard holding it down on drums. I
love the sound of the New Driver. Oh yeah, for sure,

(13:53):
some of it. Those six are sound.

Speaker 6 (13:55):
How much of it I can accomplish?

Speaker 1 (13:56):
But it's more of a thrill.

Speaker 5 (13:59):
You, I mean, was on the list for songs to learn.

Speaker 1 (14:02):
Oh yeah, yeah, so you know it. I'm one of
those like.

Speaker 5 (14:08):
You just feel things out there.

Speaker 1 (14:10):
How do you feel about Fred Armison throughout the series, Frankie,
I was kind.

Speaker 8 (14:14):
Of cafe and uh, I guess it was Chicago.

Speaker 1 (14:21):
Eager to see and who was going to be playing
in each episode? So album, I was kind of, let's
just keep a hit moment for me. Of this, I
got to see Thomas Lang.

Speaker 9 (14:33):
There's something humorous about it that I like.

Speaker 1 (14:35):
That's pretty funny, and they're trying to be totally serious.

Speaker 9 (14:38):
I don't know, well, but there's something in it that
I do like this one though, because there was something
Fred is drawing on his actual personal experience discovering Primus
here unless doesn't know if he's breaking character.

Speaker 1 (14:52):
It's pretty funny, is this? So there you go? Awkward pause?

Speaker 5 (14:58):
So is this part of the characters?

Speaker 1 (14:59):
There you go see.

Speaker 6 (15:00):
Half and half?

Speaker 1 (15:02):
That is really the first That is really the first
way I heard.

Speaker 9 (15:04):
Primus is a friend of mine where I worked at
this cafe.

Speaker 4 (15:06):
He was playing you guys, and I was like, what
is this?

Speaker 1 (15:10):
Could we do?

Speaker 9 (15:11):
Could we do a little bit of Jerry's race car driver?

Speaker 1 (15:13):
Now?

Speaker 10 (15:14):
See?

Speaker 1 (15:14):
I thought This was a Jen's Hanneman when they showed
the photo, because that's one of Fred's characters. Yen's does
a really bad drum clinic. Have you seen that one, Frankie? No, okay,
everything by the way, you see on the walls here
at this rehearsal space in La Jason mceue put it

(15:36):
all together and it looks fantastic in there. You can
see Less's iPad in the corner there with this playlist
and lyric sheet and the hands work.

Speaker 9 (15:53):
Yeah, thank you, I didn't have I don't know.

Speaker 1 (15:58):
I don't know. That was such a thrill.

Speaker 10 (16:07):
Thanks for letting me do that.

Speaker 6 (16:08):
Richard, that's that's I think that's one of the best songs.

Speaker 1 (16:10):
Ever sound thank you.

Speaker 10 (16:12):
That better be real.

Speaker 6 (16:14):
Rich is actually my brother.

Speaker 1 (16:15):
I love this and so I don't know. They kind
of weird.

Speaker 6 (16:18):
I was just like, hey, make my brother try out.

Speaker 1 (16:20):
There is a bit of a resemblance between the two and.

Speaker 6 (16:23):
The auditions, especially He's got but don't tell anybody because
it's like it's gonna be weird.

Speaker 1 (16:28):
Can my brother try out? It's in the nose and
the cheeks.

Speaker 6 (16:31):
I think, you know, it's worth to try and it
might actually work. Out, I think, so, Yeah, he's just
put in a good word for me. Don't tell mom.

Speaker 1 (16:38):
Yeah what there's pretty decent and improving. And of course
here's Bob Odenkirk.

Speaker 2 (16:47):
But I heard that you guys are kind of experience
with Japanese.

Speaker 1 (16:50):
It's not required to be able to you know, maybe
somebody could so for those of you not the know,
Tim Soyer is good friends with Bob Odenkirk and was
able to talk him into coming down for this this
little cannon right here. Do you want?

Speaker 5 (17:08):
Do you want?

Speaker 1 (17:10):
And and that's funny that we're doing this because Hoffmann
just posted on Instagram that he saw Glengarry Glenn Ross
in New York City and Bob Odenkirk's in that stage
production along with Bill Burr and many other familiar names.
This is great.

Speaker 11 (17:30):
He's cube and less I know, I'm trying.

Speaker 1 (17:52):
The great Bobsional.

Speaker 5 (17:58):
You get the gig if you want, it's yours, your game, Bob,
what's going on?

Speaker 1 (18:07):
It's great that these guys have lots of famous friends,
and of course their intro with mister Adam Gates on
the narration undefinable found themselves cool animation here how the
Galaxy for the Greatest Drunk with the satellite. These are
all the six thousand pieces of debris you've been catching, Frankie,
watching all these watching all the audition videos, right, that's

(18:28):
interstellar drum. What what level of primus tracks towers? Are
you keeping all this captured debris on in the basement? Oh? Man,
that's a huge basement. Jeez, hello John, Now this is
the teaser we got at the end of episode ten.

(18:50):
John's disbelief is unstanding. Hell gotta go.

Speaker 12 (18:57):
Yeah, let's play bool less Claypool. What are you doing, man,
I've been listening to drum.

Speaker 1 (19:11):
Uh. She was great audio.

Speaker 5 (19:16):
But we thought you were in one of the top guys,
so we want to get you to come back. Are
you interested in that?

Speaker 1 (19:23):
Absolute? So in these articles, Frankie, they said they were
setting up for how did.

Speaker 5 (19:29):
You feel about the audition?

Speaker 1 (19:29):
A three person final, So we don't know what happened
to the third person, if there was a third person,
or if logistically they decided to narrow it too interesting
at all. So I wonder if there was a third
finalist who couldn't make it or backed out, shilled out.

Speaker 13 (19:47):
For about four or five hours, I realized, how I'm
believably nervous.

Speaker 1 (19:50):
I was in the room.

Speaker 5 (19:51):
Yeah, you were pretty nervous.

Speaker 1 (19:54):
John was nervous. I realized that afterwards. But considering how
nervous I was, I think that's uh where this is
going to be a common refrain, that John is just
so real, uh, and that it's of course it's human
nature to get nervous, even if you're a pro. Right,
and you know, the one thing you got to work
and here's of course Less telling.

Speaker 12 (20:14):
Them to the double bass, it would it would speed
up like crazy.

Speaker 1 (20:17):
So you got to work on that most definitely.

Speaker 5 (20:22):
Yeah, yeah, there you go. I look forward to it.

Speaker 1 (20:25):
Thank you so much. Uh. And you know, Less recounted
how Hoffman got nervous before the tool and the sand gig.
It had to get Dan and Carey to calm him down.
I'm guessing the butterflies have really settled and haff is
able just to go out there and play those tunes
every night for Susanta, honestly, like, what a great warm up,
But you know you're playing just a handful of staples

(20:48):
and then you can slowly work your way into the
deep cuts.

Speaker 5 (20:54):
Right, have a good one, all right, I'll see you
in a week.

Speaker 1 (20:59):
Or so let you out. Sounds great. Matt, by the way,
Less calls me all the time. Yeah, I know, yeah,
I don't get don't get nervous anymore, he calls.

Speaker 8 (21:10):
Got to listen to everything. And you know, we'd always
been listening along as we went, and it got down
to the last two picks of who we really thought
were the best two fits with Primus and bringing something else.

Speaker 1 (21:23):
So this is the dairy Frankie. You know this is
was recorded right correct, one of them was. I don't
know if Rancho Relaxo has been abandoned as a regular
recording spot, but we'll find out with the CLD.

Speaker 8 (21:39):
Is really really cool and definitely up on the next levels.

Speaker 1 (21:44):
Just listen to Gurgle warming up, Chris. This is a
big thing.

Speaker 4 (21:48):
I mean this is as a mentioned that I think
Nellie on the audition, I mean Shiner as a drummer
like me playing in the band like this one.

Speaker 1 (21:57):
It's a dream gig and many bikes. I love Baked Potato,
that's Rightfman and Hoffman went to the Baked Potato after
his audition. He said, to be a part modern drummer interviews.
Good stuff felt.

Speaker 8 (22:12):
Like you could easily slide into this situation and not
have a struggle with it.

Speaker 13 (22:18):
Offer from a D when you call it, I figured
it was going to be a hey, thanks for coming.
You had a great showing. Uh, you know you should
be proud of yourself.

Speaker 1 (22:28):
Hoffman's T shirt game on Point on Point Man Nintendo
Mad Magazine.

Speaker 10 (22:36):
Final Process.

Speaker 1 (22:37):
I you know what. I Eventually, I'm sure we'll get
to speak with him on Primus tracks, but I do
want to ask him about his T shirt game and
also ask him his nostalgia level when he watched Stranger Things.
Invariably watched Stranger Things, right, I think it was, Yeah,
it was during this derby.

Speaker 2 (22:56):
There's a shot where he where they're having lunch, and
I noticed that he has a future Futurama to two
on his arm.

Speaker 10 (23:03):
It was an emotional yes he does.

Speaker 1 (23:04):
That's right.

Speaker 13 (23:05):
Times in this process that it's just been a mational
roller coaster, and that was just another one.

Speaker 1 (23:10):
You know, we have a lot of a life touch
points for TV, I think in video games haff and
so this is the copelandright.

Speaker 8 (23:20):
We had to switch the hats because he plays fourteens
and he kept missing the hatt clearly put him back,
if necessarily after l a again hit the way he
grooved with everything just fits seamlessly. He jam really good.
He did a lot of really cool stuff and it
just really.

Speaker 1 (23:38):
Felt was be curious why he kind of from so
far apart from the rest of the set amazing place.
I think it's just because it's so large. To have
it close in would make it difficult to set up
the symbols the way that would be reachable.

Speaker 5 (23:54):
Can recall you Hoffer, He's like, ah, sometimes.

Speaker 1 (23:56):
You can have that, you can have that pedal at
your feet around but then there's a really long line
that connects to the the head, you know, or the beater.
I suppose it's just pretty standard.

Speaker 9 (24:10):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (24:11):
So I got to hang out with GGO before Beautiful
Black and White.

Speaker 1 (24:14):
Actually is that the newest one pair?

Speaker 5 (24:16):
Which was it was really fantastic, and he drank and
he told me about how his mom was a winemaker.

Speaker 1 (24:22):
As the p R s. Okay, this is where it
gets really brave. It's controversial. I think there's a language
barrier thing here too, you know, because vanilla means bland,

(24:42):
and I think was looking for something different. He's not
the biggest rest maybe not the right chos either, But.

Speaker 5 (24:54):
We bonded on other musicians.

Speaker 1 (24:57):
Thank goodness. Here's one of many diners that they visited.
I mentioned this already. Anthony Garcia, our pal who's been
on the POT many times just from the preview, sent
me the names and locations of all these places they went.

(25:17):
This looks really nice.

Speaker 5 (25:18):
What do you enjoy being there?

Speaker 1 (25:19):
I'll put them in the show notes so everyone can
expand their primus pilgrimages, including you. Frank.

Speaker 4 (25:26):
Yes, yeah, Barcelona's the best time to live.

Speaker 1 (25:29):
Let's to work to live healthy wild. He's out of Barcelona,
like he would have to relocate I think for partis
or at least get an apartment in California.

Speaker 5 (25:40):
How old your father?

Speaker 1 (25:41):
He's almost seventy.

Speaker 13 (25:43):
Year Yeah, and he's lived the same lifestyle.

Speaker 1 (25:47):
Huffman ordered his oji.

Speaker 14 (25:50):
He'd never really threw up.

Speaker 10 (25:52):
You know, he's always been very talented.

Speaker 1 (25:54):
He was always there's the Futurama tattoo, the robot devil.
Good up point, you're there's a Hoffer's dad. A lot
of people will be I think Hoffer's dad looks like
less around ninety one or so. Yeah.

Speaker 4 (26:07):
I love to and uh I just saw them this
summary and be the past.

Speaker 10 (26:13):
I think one of the best pass I've had.

Speaker 14 (26:15):
Yeah, it's funny.

Speaker 1 (26:16):
You asked me what aso, and I said, you'll probably
do all yours.

Speaker 5 (26:20):
Definitely kind of hung out there.

Speaker 1 (26:23):
I've probably got him.

Speaker 5 (26:25):
It's more influenced style than most of the proms. He's
this the godfather of death metal.

Speaker 1 (26:31):
Right now, let's love saying.

Speaker 5 (26:34):
Okay, I have you heard you even heard of your best?

Speaker 10 (26:36):
Yeah, I've heard the name.

Speaker 1 (26:37):
Oh y, yeah, yeah. When he was in there's a dude.
Do you see the dude in the background, right in
the middle of the screen, he's watching them, and he's
just he would staring right down the barrel of the
camera player. Yeah, boy von And he was started is
not Chill, Faith No More?

Speaker 5 (26:54):
And some other band and I don't even remember the
name of. We're in this battle of the bands at
this stone in San Francisco and I and I remember
watching Faith. I've never heard of him.

Speaker 1 (27:05):
Before, you know, it was before they were the stories I.

Speaker 5 (27:07):
Love and I just saw him playing.

Speaker 1 (27:08):
I'm like, holy hell.

Speaker 5 (27:10):
It was funny because neither one of us won the
Battle of the Band. Some random bass random.

Speaker 15 (27:16):
Country album of the year that's in the country.

Speaker 6 (27:21):
I haven't even heard it.

Speaker 5 (27:22):
Have you heard any of it?

Speaker 1 (27:23):
Oh, they're talking about the Beyonce record.

Speaker 10 (27:27):
Man, I like her free, but I don't want to
hear it from.

Speaker 6 (27:32):
Yeah, you never know.

Speaker 5 (27:34):
You gotta tell him your puppy story.

Speaker 1 (27:37):
Oh, Poppy A Mike Morton. We were at Lamore's in Brooklyn,
right first Puffster, right.

Speaker 5 (27:42):
Behind it was most Faith and Moore was first blowing
a places sweaty.

Speaker 1 (27:45):
He was a popular He's just candidate that people were
talking out there for. This is fine.

Speaker 5 (27:50):
He's spitting all over the place and he comes off
the stage and there's me a lur stand on there
and he just goes takes his whole freaking load.

Speaker 1 (27:58):
Of dreads and goes right a gross leave his.

Speaker 5 (28:05):
Auditioning him for getting slapped by Wow.

Speaker 14 (28:09):
I'm sure you guys.

Speaker 1 (28:10):
I would have. I would have asked for some anibionic
I have a mistake. What do you mean?

Speaker 10 (28:15):
I mean that A little things?

Speaker 16 (28:18):
You know?

Speaker 1 (28:18):
So, so this is something that does a lot. I
think he's very direct and he's very forward, and I
think it could be a cultural thing. And he just asked,
what if I mess up? What if I make a mistake,
what happens?

Speaker 2 (28:29):
And the things that uh, listen, is like James Brown, right,
punishing his musicians backstage for making mistakes.

Speaker 1 (28:40):
You know, repeat it.

Speaker 2 (28:44):
So that that notion of uh, make a mistake once
and he's just a mistake.

Speaker 1 (28:52):
Make the mistake twice and it's an arrangement. That's a
Brian Eno thing. That is something that he.

Speaker 2 (28:59):
Used to to push during the recording of albums with
other bands.

Speaker 1 (29:05):
If they made mistakes.

Speaker 2 (29:06):
He was like, no, no, let's let's keep it in
and do it again, because he said that it lift
some really interesting moments when musicians were playing.

Speaker 1 (29:15):
Yeah. Yeah, it's an opportunity for creativity. A lot of musicians,
legendary ones too, have champion that idea. Yeah, all right,
so we're into the primus set here. For some reason,
Less's clock on his iPad there is not moving stuck
out two o one.

Speaker 2 (29:36):
Did you notice Gorgo is not doing the symbol work
for Bastards.

Speaker 1 (29:41):
I mean he's not doing he's not he's not doing
the high hat thing. I noticed that right away. Yeah,
Huff is Yeah, we really learned. Puff really sat down
to learn the songs, and it came through in these
performances given what uh you know, less It said early
on in the process about paying honor to what's already there,

(30:04):
but looking forward to the future. I think it was
pretty smart of Hoffman to not playing it safe risk. Yeah,
but you know, there's space for There's definitely space for
their own interpretations. Oh see, now it's two two on

(30:24):
his iPad, so it's a clock. I thought it was
a timer. Larry's playing in another one.

Speaker 2 (30:33):
Imagine if they released this audio as an EP, that
would be brilliant.

Speaker 1 (30:40):
Oh this this was a moment for you, I know. Yeah,
I was tripping when when this came up. I freaking
love anthropop. Yes, I think it really stands up live
and they Golf did put good energy into this one.

(31:01):
Here calms the ring of fire. That is a really
tough field to make. Yeah, this is cool. I'm looking
forward to hearing this one on tour again. That was fantastic. YEP,

(31:28):
Nice and smooth Hump nailed this song. He is a
This is a really fantastic.

Speaker 5 (31:35):
It's funny because when we were a first plan, I
was going, yeah, well he's really got the jay Ski thing,
He's really got the jaysk thing. And then we played
once he's got the very stuff down. He was getting
the herm stuff down and then of course we played
some brain stuff and he made he played Antipop better
than anybody's played it besides.

Speaker 13 (31:50):
Brain Damn, which I probably worked on the fuel less.

Speaker 1 (31:54):
Than And I think this these guys were kind of
a study in contrast, where Gurgu had that fuel herb thing,
he had it down pad and Hoffmann had to work
at it, and maybe Gourgu didn't have that Jay.

Speaker 10 (32:06):
Ski like I was working on exactly.

Speaker 2 (32:08):
Yeah, it was a total of Yang situations.

Speaker 1 (32:11):
And stuff, and just like the characters on Hoff's shirt was.

Speaker 13 (32:14):
Really clean, and like, even though I worked on that
so much this week, it still didn't come off as
clean as I would like.

Speaker 1 (32:21):
He's a perfectionist. He is open to constructive criticism, and
he's not afraid to point out that he is not satisfied.

Speaker 2 (32:30):
And I think that's U and I think being very
demanding with himself is one of the things that got
him to where he is right now.

Speaker 1 (32:36):
Yeah, as the official drummer. And you know, in that
Modern Drummer he.

Speaker 2 (32:44):
Revealed that he he dedicated himself one hundred percent into
this and yeah, he made sacrifices, He put all his
energy into it and it paid off and he.

Speaker 1 (32:55):
Got to jam with Jay Lane after the fact, and
Jay said, I'm excited to see this guy will do
because he's he's got the field.

Speaker 2 (33:04):
We play that fantastic anti performance. Oh my god, I
love that song.

Speaker 10 (33:07):
Double in the record.

Speaker 5 (33:08):
Yeah right, it kills me.

Speaker 1 (33:09):
It's too long, shortened it. Thank you, Amurican life is
always welcome. This is a great track to audition with
because this one.

Speaker 2 (33:25):
Goes out, Yeah exactly, Yeah, this is you got the right.

Speaker 1 (33:29):
It's a great song to get to know each other musically. Yeah,
that double kick sounds good. I love Yeah, I love
that double kick. I do wonder how much these two

(33:51):
guys had to alter their drum kits and setups so
that they could play Curb stuff and Jayski stuff and
brain stuff, but I think largely the herb stuff. They
had to make some adjustments for it. Yeah, we both
griven around.

Speaker 5 (34:11):
This one has a great feel. He has power, but listens.
Very guys have.

Speaker 1 (34:20):
Yeah, didn't notice the way.

Speaker 12 (34:22):
They don't really necessarily listen and they just power through things.

Speaker 5 (34:25):
He listens to every little thing. He had some very
creative things he was doing with just different elements of
the drums, like doing those little press rolls on the
on the Octobons.

Speaker 4 (34:35):
I'm always watching and listening what's going on around me.

Speaker 1 (34:39):
That's what makes them all the angler drummers.

Speaker 4 (34:41):
Into them and it's it's just the trio.

Speaker 1 (34:43):
I so much respect them.

Speaker 4 (34:45):
I don't want to play loud as because I can.
I just want to play balanced the fits to the.

Speaker 1 (34:51):
Music, which is exactly what you have to do in
this band. That was very solid performance. I mean this,

(35:12):
I mean this is where, this is where her what
we're doing.

Speaker 2 (35:14):
Fields on the Octobans and Jay will be doing stuff
on the high House.

Speaker 5 (35:17):
He's my favorite driving to play with. I love playing
with that guy. I love his feel. Him and I
click so uh. John Hoffman I had that similar vibe
with and I really enjoyed that. Cargo has a little
bit of everything's a nice.

Speaker 1 (35:33):
Watch bad ass.

Speaker 6 (35:35):
I would assume he's he's showing it off.

Speaker 1 (35:37):
Yeah, free busy, got myself, go watch Beaver. Was a
surprise that they included this, but once again, the double kick.

Speaker 17 (35:51):
It's a good test for Hawk exactly. I mean, that's
a lot's choice to bring out this song because.

Speaker 2 (36:05):
It started all it's got the double kid, He's got
drum rolls it's got the feels.

Speaker 1 (36:10):
Yeah, they're kind of I think both of them are
kind of holding back a little bit because on the
studio cut, Gurdo herbs all over a great musical quality.

Speaker 5 (36:26):
To the way he approaches his trumps.

Speaker 15 (36:28):
Yeah, it was really fun to play with and as
you're jamming, you're playing. It's really comfortable, and all of
a sudden, I started noticing he's playing little things that
I'm hearing, and then I start playing along with some
of these things. Then he's playing back and forth, and
all of a sudden, these parts are.

Speaker 1 (36:42):
Kind of off the communication he's playing. So it was
really fun. There's those roles.

Speaker 5 (37:18):
You survived. Is that a tough one?

Speaker 13 (37:23):
Let's just say I worked on it a little bit
this last week.

Speaker 1 (37:26):
Thank you, Thank you.

Speaker 10 (37:27):
I really wanted those triplets to come through.

Speaker 1 (37:29):
Yeah, that's very complimentary of both of them throughout. What
was it? Oh, it's it's still a mystery to me
why that part didn't make it on the Frizzle Fry

(37:52):
you guys, I just wanted to. They thought it was
over compelling you with a track just kicking right, I suppose.
So I love the Wells this this split cam. That's
nice to work by age and O to include that,
and I would love to see more of that. Just

(38:14):
a dual drum cam for the entire Primus sets would
be performances. Yes, it's so great just to watch rehearsal

(38:36):
footage Like they don't I don't know if they grasp
that that people are eating this up and they could
fairly easily do more of this and certainly monetize it
one way or another. It also looks like Hoffman is

(38:56):
really vibing on this one. Yeah, how Carold will always
be a show stopper. I mean, I'm not that much.

Speaker 4 (39:14):
You gotta know that, because you know, I'm thinking all
the time, how can I do this?

Speaker 1 (39:21):
Good? Had an opportunity to go nuts. I've forgotten less
hit the foot pedal for that than Midi Sam. Oh

(39:44):
that was fantastic. Yeah, he's got the block there, man,
we haven't I guess we haven't gone into much detail
about that.

Speaker 2 (39:55):
But I really like how List has incorporated the same
as permanent thing for the Primus performances.

Speaker 1 (40:01):
Now, yeah, it's stuck around, hasn't it. It's going on.
It's really cool, even if they're not playing rush Oh man,
gergo just rip it here come on. Yeah, I must
say that that was really compelling, and then to carry
that double kick pattern through it to the end really fun.

Speaker 2 (40:24):
This is very interesting because Julie is a song that
that really makes drummers work hard, right, It gives them
a run for their money because it's really intricate, A
very complex drum.

Speaker 1 (40:39):
Track that I had work is significant. Yeah, and that's
list said. It had not been done. And I write
music the way the way it is jade right.

Speaker 4 (40:50):
Because hard cannot avoid it. So I just learned the
song as much as possible as I could, and I.

Speaker 1 (41:00):
Wrote hungry on words.

Speaker 18 (41:01):
This part's really cool about the arrange forms and the
forms and the and the parts.

Speaker 4 (41:19):
We start together guitars singing intro once, guitars closer, high
head groove verse and then eight bar bass dam.

Speaker 1 (41:33):
The man's throat. There's inside organized.

Speaker 4 (41:36):
Ddam and and bass guitar intro sort of plus edit
them bassed tadam costepdam.

Speaker 1 (41:50):
Funny. I love what hoff is doing there is I
think he's almost playing in verbatim from my memory of
the track here at least.

Speaker 5 (42:08):
The wall he played Jilli's. I mean, I haven't heard
anybody played Chilli's this again. That well, since jas.

Speaker 1 (42:14):
Is becoming a trend for let's.

Speaker 10 (42:15):
Say that ironically.

Speaker 1 (42:17):
Yeah, they were given not so not that good, since
brain not that good, since.

Speaker 10 (42:21):
Felt and I did have.

Speaker 1 (42:22):
To to that good particular, I wasn't going to say anything.
I'm glad, but you know, I we do know that
those tunes are not in Herb's wheelhouse because Jay is
so different and brain's so different. Sorry, credits where credit

(42:43):
is do part learning them.

Speaker 2 (42:46):
He wasn't close minded as to say I'm not playing
stuff that I didn't record. He was open to learning
those songs, and.

Speaker 1 (42:55):
I think he did a great job. We've got to
give credits to her. Absolutely.

Speaker 13 (42:58):
One I've been worried about the most man like. It's
it's a tough deal man. It's tough.

Speaker 1 (43:02):
So even Haff recognizes that and acknowledges that Julie is tough.
He messed up, but they didn't care. Then they brought
Jerry back, which is interesting, although I guess, uh, do
you remember Hoff chose Tommy, Yeah, and then played Jerry
right if I recall correctly, in their first go round.

(43:30):
I mean, that's strength was beutiful.

Speaker 12 (43:32):
He's a straight up monster that guy. He definitely had
all the herb stuff down.

Speaker 5 (43:40):
You know, he's got that Danny Carey meets Dennis Chambers feel.
So he's got the solid groove but also has the
can do the big textural.

Speaker 1 (43:53):
Yes, he's a silver back gorilla for sure.

Speaker 16 (44:02):
Oh.

Speaker 1 (44:02):
I would love a full performance of these rehearsals. Yes,
for sure. Age you know if you're listening, and I
know you're not. Primus tracks pot at gmail dot com
is the email address for the full performance of each drummer.
Also all these close ups, especially of Larry. If you
aren't sure how to play some of these tunes because

(44:25):
they're a mystery, this chance to learn.

Speaker 10 (44:28):
First Prima song I ever heard was my Name is Mud?

Speaker 1 (44:32):
Really?

Speaker 5 (44:32):
Yeah, well you're gonna get to play it. But I'm
not the one you have to impress this.

Speaker 1 (44:39):
This is true.

Speaker 10 (44:40):
He's awful quiet. I can't quite get a read on him.

Speaker 5 (44:42):
You know, you don't know if you notice a lure
and Lure is a bastard.

Speaker 6 (44:47):
I drive a hard, hard ship.

Speaker 1 (44:53):
Those dead pants are killing me.

Speaker 2 (44:59):
M So here's an Here's a track that might seem
fairly straightforward to some people, but once you get down
to it, it's got so many ghost notes and little
fields here and there that it actually becomes quite intricate.

Speaker 1 (45:22):
Yes, it's got its own thing going on, and it's
not super easy.

Speaker 2 (45:33):
And it's really interesting how this one actually gave some
gave a little trouble to to Huff at the end
when he was trying to figure out how her played it.
And I think I'm not sure if Less was even
one hundred percent sure how.

Speaker 1 (45:54):
This one you definitely have to know because they're playing
it almost every night. And the other thing is uh,
and I remember Soyah telling us about this when Brain
joined the band. You know, Brain really wanted to amp
it up a little bit, especially during the verses. Yes,
and so it recalled Less saying, no, you got to

(46:16):
keep it simple like Tim does because it's then when
it hits later like right here, it has more gravitas
to it. So that's what I was looking for as
I'm keeping it simple on the verses. Yeah, here it is.
That is not right, And it actually in my left ear,

(46:42):
it does sound really weird. Pretty good.

Speaker 10 (46:44):
I made a few mistakes. Once I made the mistakes,
I just I knew better, you know, But uh, I
think the groove was was pretty good.

Speaker 13 (46:53):
I'm just really trying to focus on his his his
his thumb and his his down beat, so I can
match the bass drum with what he's who.

Speaker 1 (47:00):
Squeaky door is that we're recording here at the end, Yeah,
Soya to the rescue here.

Speaker 14 (47:17):
Playing with me two three four?

Speaker 5 (47:26):
Does he play it on double bass?

Speaker 10 (47:29):
It feels kind of weird?

Speaker 1 (47:30):
He does? Maybe not?

Speaker 5 (47:34):
I say, no, no double bas ore, you go, I
think it's just Tom's Yeah, knowing him, it's probably that
it's probably him is spreading out.

Speaker 2 (47:43):
We're gonna about to kind of whiplash on half right, Yeah,
plait again.

Speaker 1 (47:54):
We I may have mentioned this at some point, but
got to go see Beck when Soya was teching for
Beck and doing the drum tech and he he came
out and they had a sound check. Of course when
it was Beck's turn, and Soya played the mud drum
beat and I was probably the only person who knew
what was in the room. Yep, there's that Phil at

(48:17):
the startup back Ermile got. They both nailed it. The
Phil that herb p Chrits he has written. Yep, the
fill heard around the world. I like what he's doing
on the ride there. So if if you notice. That's

(48:43):
something that I noticed. I don't know if you noticed this.

Speaker 2 (48:44):
As well in terms of these rehearsals, is uh, they're
just going through the staples and the classics because all
of them have their own rings of fire, right like yeah,
why Nona Mots got all those ghost notes and the
ultro Pachyderm has that drum roll of the intro. So
they want to see if they can nail these staples

(49:06):
down because if they if they were able to do that,
then they can work on the deep cuts and new music.

Speaker 1 (49:13):
Right in this right here, you see Less is facing
off and so they are locking in during this jam,
and you can tell it's a jam Via. It's a
jam Va Hoffman's very first jam. Vas. I hope he
has his hermit, but you can tell he's locking in.
He wants to build with him. And it sounds really good.

Speaker 2 (49:40):
Another great track because you've got to play the song
the way.

Speaker 1 (49:46):
It is fucked.

Speaker 2 (49:48):
That section keeps you deliverty to improvise and to jam,
so that makes it really fun to witness life and.

Speaker 1 (49:56):
Then into this which is just so powerful. Yeah, at
this melt of my brain when I watched the quarter post.

Speaker 16 (50:05):
Two months for drummers.

Speaker 1 (50:23):
Yep, so good. Uh, you know they play packet erm
a lot, but when it's the closer and they go
into that, it's it's really rewarding and it's a lot
of fun. And just like Man the American, Yeah, very
much so it's very similar. Look at what Gurgu is doing.
That's pretty rad. Just those little things.

Speaker 15 (50:50):
I thought for sure out of the when I got
down to the nine, there would be somebody that that's
an inside joker, want.

Speaker 6 (50:58):
To they were into it, that would be deaf.

Speaker 15 (51:00):
I mean, everybody out of those nine were like phenomenal drums.

Speaker 1 (51:05):
There wasn't anybody who turned out that they weren't, by
the way masterful editing.

Speaker 13 (51:08):
But Jul that Partsman's giving problems and I know it's coming,
like I'm going to the halftime part.

Speaker 1 (51:15):
This post mortem is really cool. That's what I did
that time. But get some talk about it.

Speaker 5 (51:23):
You know that's the hard you were struggling with the
end of mine.

Speaker 1 (51:26):
You know, it's like, yeah, I guess I've never it
was less the right way. You have to watch a
video hat to do some homework on that. I thought
that was all bass.

Speaker 10 (51:37):
At the end too, Like I didn't even realize that
he was matching your base.

Speaker 1 (51:41):
Well, you know, I'm pretty bad. I wonder if you
can see that on hallucinogenetics. Fun what herb's doing on
that one? That might be a good reference. Did you
do that one of the clinic videos? Of course? Yeah,
Tim's drum DVD. Guess that'd be the one. If you

(52:02):
can't get him on the phone, just get his drum.
It's hard to find, thou batt Oh, here's the new tune.
Now do you see on the fridge there, Frankie, there's
some drawings and I think that's afro Less on the left.

Speaker 5 (52:18):
The idea that's right, but he's not enough at the
end of the day.

Speaker 1 (52:24):
And by the way, that was Toddler's stomach growling to
take home. You can see him. So the next day
he looks at the song. Whoever's off camera, probably.

Speaker 5 (52:31):
Environment just like we wouldn't.

Speaker 6 (52:33):
Hopefully these are going to different tracks. I can hear
the gurgling over here.

Speaker 1 (52:37):
You can mute me out right.

Speaker 5 (52:38):
It's gurgleor line gurgled. Are you game thrumps guy?

Speaker 1 (52:44):
Yes?

Speaker 5 (52:45):
Like iron there's a you know, because I was like,
how I've watched this thing, but we watched it.

Speaker 1 (52:50):
It was amazing.

Speaker 5 (52:51):
I'm watching it through.

Speaker 1 (52:53):
It's a not a Game of Thrones, guy, You're not
a Game of Thrones guy, Frankie.

Speaker 2 (52:58):
No. People pushed me so hard to watch it. I
decided I was never going to watch it. Well, you
don't want anything to do with Game of Thrones. And
then the last year, my girlfriend pushed so hard for
me to watch Game of Thrones and she said, forget
what people told.

Speaker 1 (53:14):
You, just give it a chance.

Speaker 2 (53:16):
And uh, we made We barely made it through half
of the first season, and I was like, I've had
enough of this.

Speaker 1 (53:24):
I can't well, I can't. I'm sorry with that. You
cannot be the drummer for primis exactly be her mole
support business for Big all week. The very first time,
Hausman got a lot of Brownie points there for.

Speaker 2 (53:42):
They respectfully placed the trup sticks on on the plate.

Speaker 1 (53:46):
That's how they are meant to be placed. They know
their culture. Yeah, rare sighting of age, you know, rare
sighting usually off. That's good seat.

Speaker 5 (54:03):
I'll tell you some of the most awkward moments in
my life. We had a buddy who used to come
and meet us.

Speaker 1 (54:09):
Out on the road.

Speaker 5 (54:10):
You'd runt a limousine. We'd go have like a steak
or something.

Speaker 1 (54:13):
In them, drive it to the strip bus. Who is
this buddy? We go into the strip club?

Speaker 5 (54:20):
You know, four out of five times the DJ would
be a big promost fan and you're sitting there and
also be.

Speaker 1 (54:26):
Put on like you know, I think it was I
think he's talking about got it. I can't remember which
guy from Fishbone because he said they would they would
take him to the strip clubs a lot, so I
think it was a Fishbone guy.

Speaker 2 (54:38):
Wasn't there a very spicy I think those things the
Great Bund group about one real strip.

Speaker 1 (54:43):
Yes, that's what That's what I'm drawing on. Yet, remember
you decide who would be your drummer? Once again gurdu
being very direct? Yea, which is it's not about question
to ask you. But I think it might be off
putting for some people. It was kind of savage.

Speaker 2 (54:59):
We got it.

Speaker 5 (55:00):
We got to look through the footage and all that whatnot.

Speaker 1 (55:03):
I don't know, man, when I'm when I'm interviewing for
a job, I want to know when they're going to
make their decisions so I could get me a plan accordingly.

Speaker 5 (55:12):
But I did tell Lure last night, I said, you
don't mind me a berth, and you don't like table
to be wrong.

Speaker 4 (55:20):
So my chances are going.

Speaker 1 (55:21):
Down lurd draining the wine. Pink pants. Yeah, so I
think what happened here is ag and O took off
his mic because he probably was going to the bathroom.

Speaker 5 (55:42):
If you can learn three or four Rush songs by tomorrow,
I would be very impressed.

Speaker 1 (55:46):
Back on the Rush thing again.

Speaker 19 (55:49):
Which one if you can learn signas X one, good
old signas x one.

Speaker 1 (55:58):
Very impressed, Which that's Less's favorites. Well, I mean like
that now.

Speaker 5 (56:05):
The most important thing is you gotta be figure it
out the song and then we'll record the song.

Speaker 1 (56:11):
For the way we tend to work is you don't
think they talked any Rush with host.

Speaker 5 (56:18):
No, everybody starts throwing ideas at it until somebody goes, oh,
that's that's the one that's sticks. That's that's cool.

Speaker 1 (56:25):
They're throwing ideas. It sticks is a pasta Frankie, it's
got to be. It'll lay it down and that sickness.
Nobody is by the way in this in these two scenes,
nobody is mean mugging the camera in the back n

(56:46):
get out of here.

Speaker 10 (56:47):
Thank you so much more than that.

Speaker 1 (56:49):
Yeah, no worries well primus so yeah, it was I
think what Lesson is saying there is it's a business expense,
so Primus is buying your dinner. We're going to write
it off on our taxis. Oh, this was really fascinating.

Speaker 2 (57:09):
As you said, we not only had we not gotten
a snick peek into rehearsals or video material in a
long time, but when was the last time we saw
footage of them working on a new track?

Speaker 1 (57:23):
For we all kind of right, Yeah, this is a
I don't think ever have we No, So this was
quite a revelation.

Speaker 2 (57:31):
And for me, one of the most amazing things about
this footage was looking at Less and they're standing there
listening to the mix, because it's something that we had
not seen in a long time, and it was really
refreshing orchestrated for sure.

Speaker 1 (57:47):
Yeah, I mean, I don't need a full blown making up,
but you know, a ten minute future at sounds great.
I'm into it. Let's go and you can see Lure
watching Less for the key use and uh, that's a
filthy film, like a little.

Speaker 5 (58:03):
Solo bit, you know.

Speaker 13 (58:04):
Okay, I'll just say I'm glad that I'm not in
a drum solo contest against Gurgo because yeah, he's He's
the most ferocious drummer on earth right now as far
as I'm concerned, or one of them. He's one of
the drummers that I used to watch daily just to
get in the in the zone.

Speaker 1 (58:20):
And there is an anecdote in the modern Drummer that
my own juice is management inspiration. Uh, except schedules, I guess,
or the wrong schedule or something. So he was there. Yeah,
these are all people that I really hate to and really,
you're an awesome drummer.

Speaker 10 (58:35):
I love their drumming.

Speaker 1 (58:36):
So John is a monster. He will know, you know.

Speaker 5 (58:41):
When it came down to the final final, it was
a very tough decision between him and him and Hoffer.
Gurgo was more in Herb camp. If we wanted to
just replace Herb, he would probably be the perfect.

Speaker 1 (58:54):
Guy to get.

Speaker 5 (58:54):
Yeah, I like keeping the hide thing going kind of
with me, okay, but maybe instead of a fill in
there doing the hot you're doing like a high.

Speaker 14 (59:01):
Hat stuff but not too crazy.

Speaker 1 (59:02):
You know, I'm gonna go.

Speaker 14 (59:03):
Back to this high hat.

Speaker 1 (59:04):
I think that's not necessarily short changing Gurgu because he's
certainly dynamic, but I take the point and then here
you see haff watching very closely. Yeah. See that sounds

(59:48):
like something hoff would play. But it also sounds like
Primus because that it builds.

Speaker 5 (59:52):
It builds in steps.

Speaker 10 (59:53):
Yeah, I like the high hat stuff.

Speaker 1 (59:55):
That's yeah.

Speaker 10 (59:56):
They threw a song at me and had me do
my thing to it just to see what I could do.

Speaker 1 (59:59):
I mean it, it was.

Speaker 13 (01:00:00):
It was so fun and so interesting, and I was
up all night working on it. You know, I was
up till about two thirty or three o'clock in the morning.
As soon as I woke up this morning, and the
first thing I thought was the song. So I just
got right back to work.

Speaker 5 (01:00:13):
And we recorded the song and Hoffer killed it. He
came in with some great ideas. We I think we
only played the song three.

Speaker 1 (01:00:19):
Times, thankfully.

Speaker 13 (01:00:21):
It was you know, into most of the parts that
I wrote and got it suggestions, and they were great suggestions,
made the song sound better.

Speaker 10 (01:00:28):
So I'm just very happy. You're probably not going to
knock the smile off my face today.

Speaker 6 (01:00:32):
That's that's how it comes out of this.

Speaker 1 (01:00:34):
That comes out of yeah, just this stuff work, figuring
out the arrangement, by the way, it sounds really good
in this in this room, he tells me it's gonna

(01:00:54):
sound good life. Dang, I love what Gurgur's doing there, one.

Speaker 5 (01:01:09):
Of those I think.

Speaker 14 (01:01:10):
So I'd like to keep it not too happy.

Speaker 5 (01:01:12):
I want to keep it kind of dark and creepy
because it is about fentanyl. Gurgle played amazing stuff on it.
He it was you know, it was different than what
the way Hoffer approached it, but it was amazing, and
he did a lot of really cool Dennis Chambers type
stuff with the kick drum. It was badass.

Speaker 1 (01:01:26):
Didn't didn't Let's say in a prior episode, he's scared
the jam with her Dennis Chambers. He wants to but
it's scary. Yeah, that guy's incredible.

Speaker 4 (01:01:34):
People creating new stuff. So I always left to be
a part of that.

Speaker 14 (01:01:37):
Like what if we go? Like if you go?

Speaker 5 (01:01:39):
Because I'm going.

Speaker 1 (01:01:44):
Look, you know, Frank did just notice too? GurGur is
wearing a track jacket.

Speaker 5 (01:01:53):
You don't do a film, you notice?

Speaker 1 (01:01:56):
How did I miss that? Yeah?

Speaker 5 (01:01:57):
I like that you're doing the high hot with my.

Speaker 1 (01:01:59):
Very stern European before stereotyping.

Speaker 14 (01:02:03):
Two three four. Yeah, because that's cool.

Speaker 5 (01:02:13):
If you're if you're doing like a kind of a
halftime feel with your feet and then you're doing some
you know whatever sixteenth and that type stuff on the
high hats. Yeah, so it gives it a kind of
an interesting tug.

Speaker 1 (01:02:22):
Yeah you know what I mean. Yeah, I love that.
We're just listening to Larry give us some of them.

Speaker 5 (01:02:47):
I love that kick trum extra oh yeah, you know
what I mean. It needs a little something to spice
it up.

Speaker 1 (01:02:58):
That's rad.

Speaker 4 (01:02:59):
They're so primeless. So you know everything happens under their
their their primus vibe. So and you know their creativity
under that primus cloud is just endless.

Speaker 1 (01:03:12):
That's what about spoken at about making respect that so much.

Speaker 4 (01:03:16):
I love how Laire find his weird possession in this music.

Speaker 1 (01:03:22):
I love that lot.

Speaker 10 (01:03:24):
And you know it's a different kind.

Speaker 1 (01:03:27):
Of you could host this podcast. You're saying all the
stuff we say every time we cover a t.

Speaker 13 (01:03:32):
Knows who I am now because I think he got
my itinerary on accident and in this party when I
got here from the airport, he was leaving as I
was coming in, and that was an interesting moment.

Speaker 1 (01:03:52):
And I don't know if it's biased because we the
finalized recording before we saw this, but I do feel
like Hoff's drum part fits a bit better. But I
think I think it's biased just because we heard the

(01:04:13):
studio cut and we knew he was the drummer. I
like what Lure's doing there. I don't know if that
it made it in that form on the final track,
but I like the feel is just in contrast, really incredible.

Speaker 5 (01:04:34):
He has a great feel. He did his homework, He
came in with some great ideas. We didn't have to
change much. We didn't have to massage him in a
different way or or or point him any different directions.
Just give him a little guidance and by the third
take we had nailed it. He's kind of a combination
of Jay Lane and Stuart Copeland.

Speaker 10 (01:04:54):
Like the way he what a.

Speaker 5 (01:04:55):
Compliment, approaches and accents and and all his high hat
work and not it's it. It reminds me of those
those two guys.

Speaker 13 (01:05:05):
You know, in my dream world, I wanted to show
up and uh and and have an absolutely undeniable audition,
you know, but when you get into the room, things
are always a little different than you expect, and you know,
you plug sport to go considering or whatnot.

Speaker 10 (01:05:21):
Like I've leveled up ten times over during this experience.

Speaker 1 (01:05:36):
Oh man, I think your doo could uh be a
machine gunning drummer like Vinnie Calayuda, right Like, I think
he's in that vein just sick like the catches that

(01:06:21):
obviously changed that vocalization.

Speaker 5 (01:06:25):
Alright, that's all I can play it because my fingers
are dire. That was about us. Yeah, it's not a killer.
I love the break at the end.

Speaker 1 (01:06:33):
His fingers aren't hurting on tour because that would concern me.
Giving him a little tap. That laptop needs a Primus

(01:06:56):
track sticker. Yeah, I just love looking at this footage.
I mean they're just standing there listening to the playback
less it's changing his phone, but he's but he's really
satisfying to watch for sure. Blurr is really deep and fat. Yeah,

(01:07:23):
it's cool that I like this process that they're documenting it.

Speaker 5 (01:07:34):
So what do you want to play a four or six?

Speaker 13 (01:07:36):
No?

Speaker 1 (01:07:36):
Four? This part's crazy. I didn't know was a play
bass and how to do?

Speaker 5 (01:07:41):
Jerry was race car driver? Uh clottle more, Frankie, did
you see the video of the Oh gosh, her name
is that slips my mind.

Speaker 1 (01:07:55):
The gal that figured out Jerry in like five minutes. Yeah,
I mean that was awesome. I posted that on the
on the Billboard day. I think, Yeah, she's worth checking out.
By the way, Gurgo is on her first record. He
plays drums on a I seen.

Speaker 10 (01:08:17):
Tommy, Tommy, Sorry, Tommy, is that what I'm doing? Yeah,
I'm playing this since ten just so close to each
other the streams.

Speaker 1 (01:08:29):
I cannot do that.

Speaker 5 (01:08:31):
Yeah, so you're doing it with the you're doing with
the right hand, I do with the left hand.

Speaker 1 (01:08:35):
Crazy, Gurgoo sounds good.

Speaker 5 (01:08:41):
I love yeah Stanley's album uh Resupply Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:08:48):
Yeah, bottom over Stanley. That's really impressive.

Speaker 5 (01:08:55):
That's totally different.

Speaker 2 (01:08:56):
You can play drums so well and I never perhaps
a base, and he plays like that's amazing.

Speaker 1 (01:09:01):
Yeah, it's impressive. It's a badass. Bas Well, stand all
the time.

Speaker 5 (01:09:16):
You're playing it wrong.

Speaker 14 (01:09:17):
You're playing it wrong.

Speaker 10 (01:09:18):
Well, you played it wrong.

Speaker 5 (01:09:20):
I probably am playing it right.

Speaker 1 (01:09:22):
I have perfect pitch. Andy has perfect pitch.

Speaker 5 (01:09:26):
Yeah, yeah, I do not, and I can barely sing.

Speaker 1 (01:09:29):
Well. I love that. I love that.

Speaker 10 (01:09:33):
That's you.

Speaker 1 (01:09:35):
I think it does give in trying to take my
job individuality. Thank you?

Speaker 5 (01:09:39):
Yeah, right on, brother, He's like, you are playing it
wrong because I have perfect.

Speaker 1 (01:09:43):
Pitch, san chance. Yeah, but it doesn't mean it's good.

Speaker 2 (01:09:47):
I just.

Speaker 14 (01:09:49):
Farewell, brother.

Speaker 5 (01:09:50):
That was amazing, Thank you.

Speaker 4 (01:09:51):
So much, unforgettable yet, thank you, thank you.

Speaker 1 (01:09:57):
Heck yeah, man, he'll be late. You guys have the best,
are you sure?

Speaker 14 (01:10:00):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (01:10:01):
You know your parachute, you're ready for the airplane? Yeah,
we knew we were going to be at the at
the station. There's the station night for trivia night. I
believe I called you and just said, hey, this is
our guy, right, and you're like, yeah, yeah, I'm the
driving home.

Speaker 6 (01:10:20):
I think we've got on the phone and started talking
about it.

Speaker 5 (01:10:23):
It's just like, yeah, this is our this is our guy.
All the cameras and everything are here, our crews here,
he's here. Yeah, let's why don't we just let him know?

Speaker 1 (01:10:32):
Now?

Speaker 10 (01:10:33):
Working with the cruise been awesome?

Speaker 16 (01:10:34):
Man?

Speaker 1 (01:10:35):
Is everybody here? Is you recognize some of the folks
in the background.

Speaker 13 (01:10:40):
Made me feel, you know, like I'm just a part
of a part of the team, you know, and like
all right, you ready.

Speaker 1 (01:10:47):
Within ready the big moment. So it's how many tears
did you shed? Frankie?

Speaker 10 (01:10:53):
Like I'm zero, you know, definitely style you monster.

Speaker 1 (01:10:58):
My heart has become farther and farther those go by.
This is this is the most authentic moment here for
the entire thing.

Speaker 2 (01:11:16):
There's a sealed electric ad to be in that show,
some inside that show offer.

Speaker 1 (01:11:26):
So when I watched this the first time, I'm going,
hold it, come on, Hopper, hold it together, buddy, you
got it. But at the same time, I just thought,
let it rip, man, let it go. This is so great.
This shows how badly he wanted it and that he

(01:11:46):
just I don't know what to say to that is
living the dream, dude.

Speaker 5 (01:11:52):
Yeah, we got to make sure that's a room fall.

Speaker 6 (01:12:00):
Well, you know, nice work man.

Speaker 5 (01:12:04):
I do remember after that first day that we felt
very strongly about Wow, I think we got our guy.
And unless Haffer really chokes tomorrow.

Speaker 1 (01:12:14):
I think he's going to get the gig or Fox
a Dog Taylor.

Speaker 6 (01:12:17):
I hope he's not out buying Heroin right now.

Speaker 12 (01:12:24):
It almost feels scripted the way this has all come about,
because Hoffer came out of the blue.

Speaker 5 (01:12:30):
He wasn't going to get an audition. He resubmitted and
we were totally blown away brought him in. He played
lurea was kind of having.

Speaker 12 (01:12:37):
A rough day that day because he's been dealing with
fucking this is interesting and dealing with insurance and this
Lura actually wasn't that impressed.

Speaker 6 (01:12:45):
I was beat down by this kickd and was pointed
at my head.

Speaker 1 (01:12:48):
So anyway, here's the guy who But it's kind of
interesting that you know then then did he was weighing
on him and it kind of tolered his perception that day, and.

Speaker 5 (01:12:59):
Then he ends up getting the audition and killed.

Speaker 6 (01:13:03):
It just just as Hollywood scripted that it came out.

Speaker 5 (01:13:09):
Some of those that can't read it, it says, Hoffington,
you got the gig?

Speaker 1 (01:13:19):
Did you cry? Josh? Did you cry?

Speaker 2 (01:13:21):
Uh?

Speaker 1 (01:13:22):
No? But it was it got really dusty in here
into my allergies.

Speaker 6 (01:13:27):
He was the underdog in the sense of like, no,
I just I did you know some of these names.

Speaker 1 (01:13:32):
Were There's certainly a lot of feelings because he's such
a likable guy, scared to death he knew some of
the names that he ran into. He's very charismatic, and
I think there's something to his humility because I'm from
the Midwest, Frankie, and I identify with that part of
Hoffer's personality.

Speaker 5 (01:13:48):
So you're the other guy.

Speaker 1 (01:13:49):
To be humble to the point of self deprecation is
something that I grew up doing too.

Speaker 2 (01:13:55):
And so why did you pull up a new receive
on a limo with a pussy personally?

Speaker 1 (01:14:00):
Oh, that's because I've made it baby. The world owes me.

Speaker 5 (01:14:06):
Versus.

Speaker 8 (01:14:07):
When John came in instantly, he seemed.

Speaker 1 (01:14:10):
Like he was the drummer in primis I hear by
the way, I don't know what breaks it down.

Speaker 10 (01:14:17):
Thank you guys so much.

Speaker 2 (01:14:20):
It was really wholesome to see uh Kuff's authentic reaction
to the news.

Speaker 1 (01:14:26):
He's he's not processing.

Speaker 5 (01:14:32):
And it was a very emotional thing.

Speaker 1 (01:14:33):
I know it wouldn't have been this way with anybody else.

Speaker 5 (01:14:38):
I think he was very taken aback.

Speaker 15 (01:14:40):
Yeah, I think it took him a beat to figure
out what was actually happening.

Speaker 1 (01:14:43):
Yeah, gosh, what a moment.

Speaker 10 (01:14:44):
I'm stunned.

Speaker 1 (01:14:47):
I don't know what to say. So I just noticed
the slurp on this reference everybody we're Californian, except Californians
do it in private, though.

Speaker 13 (01:15:03):
I it's just been dreaming about this for months. It's
so happy and I'm so thankful.

Speaker 10 (01:15:13):
It might take me a little while to.

Speaker 1 (01:15:15):
Process this, but Chenie's a little verklemp.

Speaker 13 (01:15:19):
I couldn't be any happier right now, even though I'm cheery,
just blown away you guys, Thank.

Speaker 1 (01:15:25):
You right on, man, Yeah, what a way to endear yourself.
You aren't.

Speaker 5 (01:15:32):
You earned it, man, you aren't.

Speaker 6 (01:15:33):
You're the first drumm and answered all the trivia questions.

Speaker 1 (01:15:35):
Right, that's it was trivia night. You must have done
pretty well.

Speaker 5 (01:15:42):
And then Lure came in start cracking the jokes to
kind of lighten up the mood because everybody's like a hofer.
So it was a pretty it was a pretty amazing moment.

Speaker 1 (01:15:53):
Actually, So you earned it.

Speaker 5 (01:15:54):
It's not like we're going, oh wow, this guy's nice
and you are nice. You're a nice guy. You're fucking great, dude.
You killed it.

Speaker 1 (01:16:02):
So this is this is a really cool part because
Less is building him up now. He's like, you earned it.
You were the drummer for Primus, do it exactly. This
is ah, there's soya, you earned it.

Speaker 5 (01:16:17):
I bet you didn't know.

Speaker 1 (01:16:17):
There's gonna be.

Speaker 14 (01:16:18):
Cake if you go.

Speaker 1 (01:16:23):
Soya is getting a little uh misty out there.

Speaker 5 (01:16:28):
Needs a beer beer.

Speaker 1 (01:16:34):
Thank you? Yeah, now get to work and get to work.
He did. This is a great note to end on
that he uh took the stage first time as Primus
drummer alongside his hero Danny Carrey. And also Hoff's like
six three six four, So this shows you how tall

(01:16:55):
Danny Carey is. Crip and that's all she wrote. Final
thoughts on this one, Frankie.

Speaker 2 (01:17:06):
I love how they finally revealed Hoffer's name at the
end of the credits, because it had been blurred out
during all the previous episodes, and now it's like, yeah, Primuses,
let's cliple Larry Leland and John Hoffman. I think that's
really fantastic, a very nice touch.

Speaker 1 (01:17:23):
Absolutely, they knew what they were doing with that.

Speaker 2 (01:17:27):
That was genius and I just want to say that
I just want to echo what you said and thank
Primus for giving us over four hours of content. We
were truly spoiled. We could not have asked for more,
and it was really fantastic watch. While it lasted, it

(01:17:48):
surely became a Thursday highlight. I was always anticipating the
next episode, and I didn't think that they would close
the series with one hour episode. I think that was
very generous with them, and it made for some really
great watching.

Speaker 1 (01:18:08):
Yeah, it was. It was must see yt I was
just waiting for it on YouTube every Thursday. And of
course it's over now, so we probably won't get much
more in this vein. But my hope is that the
response to this uh you know this has This particular
video as of this moment has over one hundred thousand views.

(01:18:32):
Many of the audition videos are well over one hundred thousand.

Speaker 2 (01:18:37):
But we did get some random umpa violate and refawell
to King's videos on the YouTube channel.

Speaker 1 (01:18:45):
Whoever manages the YouTube must have looked in the drafts
folder and went oh shit and then published. But my
hope is that with this and the amount of attention
and engagement that the band experience, that every once in
a while we'll get more video. Yeah. Yes, And so

(01:19:07):
even if they're not making records, which we know they
do not make records at light speed anymore like they
did the nineties, just a little video here and there,
a live cut checking in with Hopper in the studio,
what happens. Because Primacy is a very visual band, it's
all about the aesthetics. Yes, and we know less and

(01:19:28):
Layer Of largely stayed away from social media until recently.
Hoff Is quite a social media presence, so maybe he'll
drag them all into the twenty twenties and we'll see
more digital content come in our way. I'm completely thankful
for this drum series. It was so great to see
I can give cheesy home video arrest. That poor tape

(01:19:50):
is ready to fall apart. Yes, I can set it
aside for a while. Video Plastic gets to take a breath.
This is the kind of like when I was a
teenage in the nineties, Frankie, I lived for those video releases.
Sodeoplasty came along, I watched it a thousand times, and
then when Hallucinogenetics showed up, I wore that thing out.

Speaker 2 (01:20:12):
I would I would freak out when I found a
single at a record store and it said that besides
the audio tracks, it also included a video on quick
time on your computer. That was like, oh shit, video content, yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:20:31):
The the enhanced CDs too. These guys are on the
cutting edge of the time and it was quite a
wonderful bonus. So hoping for more and whatever form it takes,
I'm sure I will just be enthusiastic to view it,
receive it, experience it. I just have one thing to
say congratulations, John Hoffman. I'll echo that sentiment. Hoff You're

(01:20:56):
welcome anytime. I guess that'll do it for us. The
Stellar drum Derby has concluded. John Hoffman is well on
his way into his tenure as primus drummer for life.
There is no escape, John, Interstellar drum Derby. You've been tracked,
