(00:00):
Welcome to the Psychological Theories podcast, and this podcast would take a journey into
the human mind with one psychological theoryat a time. So let's begin well
again today as a Layorona or theWeeping Woman, and it's one of Mexico's
most famous and haunting legends. Thetale varies across regions, but the crux

(00:23):
remains the same. A beautiful womannamed Maria marries a wealthy man and they
have two children. However, whenthe husband's affections diminish and he turns his
attention to another woman, a distraughtupset Maria, in a fit of jealous
rage or some argued crime of passion, drowns their children in the river.
Realizing the gravity of her actions,She's consumed by guilt and drowns herself.

(00:44):
Since then, they say, herrestless spirit is said to wander, weeping
for her children and causing distress tothose who encounter her. Whether or not
it's a true story is difficult toknow. But what are the psychological interpretations
of this Well, if we lookat it from a Freudian perspective, if
Maria's intense guilt that they're committing theheinous act of drowning her children showcases a
conflict between, as Freud would say, the ID, the primitive desires,

(01:07):
and the super ego, which isour moral conscience. According to Freud,
the act of drowning her children couldbe seen as an impulsive act driven by
the ID, seeking immediate satisfaction andrevenge against her neglectful husband, of course
without reason, but a lot oftimes our limbic system emotional system can hijack
our pre final cortex, where wehave reason and impulse control. However,

(01:29):
once the act has done, hersuper ego's weight, cultural and moral norms
becomes overpowering, leading to her subsequentsuicide. Edipol complex can be seen here
as well. Through the lens orthis legend can be seen through it.
The children, especially if one considersthem to be male, represents rivals from
Maria's affection towards her husband. Byeliminating them, she unconsciously removes the competition.

(01:52):
Her intense reaction to her husband's neglectmight suggest an anxious attachment style,
possibly stemming from past trauma as orlosses, but of course this is all
a speculation. Some would look atthe water as a symbol, often representing
the unconscious emotions and the feminine aspectof many cultures. Maria's active drowning her
children and herself can be seen asbeing overwhelmed by her emotions. It also

(02:12):
signifies a return to the primordial orregression to an earlier undifferentiated state. They
would say. From a young Yanperspective, Layodona the weeping woman can be
received as the shadow archetype, thedarker repress aspects of the collective unconscious.
She embodies the taboo of a motherever harming their offspring, a stark contrast
to the nurtural role expected in manysocieties, but her haunting presence serves as

(02:38):
a cultural reminder of unchecked emotions andthe consequences of actions driven by the darker
sides of our nature. The widespreadnature of the legends variations across Latin America
suggested resonance with the resonates with thecollective unconscious of the region. Themes of
love, betrayal, revenge and remorseor universal, but the specific expression in

(02:59):
the form of Laota Layardna might encapsulateparticular cultural anxieties and values. The tail
surge of the cautionary narrative, emphasizingthe dangers of extreme emotions lack of emotional
regulation. See it's not just aghost story to meant to frighten children,
but it's a rich narrative and betterwith the profound psychological and cultural meanings.

(03:20):
The tail encapsulates the tensions between ourprimal desires and societal norms, the complexities
of familiar relationships, and the deathsof human emotion. The legends endurance testifies
to its powerful reflection of human experiences, fears, and desires. So did
it ever happened? Doesn't seem to. It's probably a legend that derived.

(03:45):
Maybe there was a murder in thattown. Maybe two children were found dead
drowned in the river. Either way, the story has a powerful message for
many of us and controlling our emotionsand the dangers that we don't control it.
What could happen? That's it fornow.
