(00:00):
Welcome to the Psychological Theories podcast, and this podcast would take a journey into
the human mind with one psychological theoryat a time. So let's begin today.
We're gonna be looking at Larian theory. It's a psychodynamic approach that emphasizes
the individual's subjective experience, social context, and the pursuit of personal goals.
(00:25):
In this theory, we see oneof the few times that we see a
theory really focus on the person's goals. We see it again later with logos
therapy from Victor Frankel. We'll getto that another time. He also was
motivated by the unique striving. Accordingto him, that people are motivated by
the unique striving for superiority and adesire for social connection. The theory plays
a significant importance on the individual's perceptionof their life story, their beliefs,
(00:49):
and their sense of belonging. Now, let's explain the striving for superiority.
He believed that ad individuals have aninnate drive to overcome feelings of inferiority.
Thing you don't feel you're good at, things that could be maladaptive, things
that could have happened in childhood whereyou were told you weren't smart, you
weren't this, you weren't that, and people will strive for personal growth and
(01:11):
self improvement. He also believes thatsocial interests refers to an individuals innate tendency
to connect with others and contribute positivityto society. We've seen this a lot,
especially how social engagement can be goodfor your mental health. He also
believed in the unique lifestyle, whichincludes their beliefs, attitudes, and values
that are formed in childhood. Andhe also thought about birth order. He
(01:37):
emphasized the influence of birth order andpersonality development, and he believed that a
person's position in the family birth ordercan impact their personality and behavior. Here's
a case study of Sarah, thirtyyear old woman who's struggling with the feelings
of inadequacy and low self esteem. She feels disconnected from her family and has
difficulty forming meaningful relationships. Sarah's amiddle child and her family she often compares
(01:59):
herself to her successful older sister andher younger sister who's a family favorite.
So that's how this is the backgroundof the individual. How would the therapist
work with this? While the therapistexplores Sarah's early memories and significant events in
her life to understand her subjective experiencesand beliefs. Through this, you can
help Sarah identify patterns of thinking andbehaviors that may contribute to her feelings of
(02:22):
inferiority. In addition that therapists candiscuss the impact of her birth order as
a middle child and how I mightinfluence her feelings of being overlooked or overshadowed.
By understanding these dynamics, Sarah cangain insight into her relationship patterns and
self perception. In addition, thetherapist encourages Sarah to recognize her strengths and
abilities, helping her develop a morepositive self image. The therapist also focuses
(02:46):
on promoting Sarah's social interest by discussingways she can connect with others. The
therapist explores Sarah's lifestyle and identifies areaof which she can make positive changes.
This may include achievable goals, improvingher self care practice and engaging and activities
that aligned with her interests and values. Rewriting the life script, the therapist
(03:06):
works with Sarah to challenge and reframeher negative beliefs about herself and her place
in the world. By rewriting herlife script with more empowering and optimistic narratives,
and lastly, involving Sarah's family andtherapy may help address unresolved conflicts and
dynamics that contribute to her feelings ofdisconnection. So at Larian theory is one
of my favorites. I think it'sreally coincides a lot with these self developmental
(03:30):
programs that you've been seeing for decades, because they focus on purpose, they
focus on lifestyle, they focus onstriving for superiority in some sense, whether
it's academic, whether it's business, love life, whatever it may be.
So I think at Larian theory isa really easy one to understand and a
(03:51):
very effective type of therapy. Doesit work with severe psychiatric disorders, It
can mitigate, but again those aresevere psychiatric disord. There is a chicken
and pub They need a multi factorialapproach, multiple interventions,
