Jednak wyzwolenie obozu poprzedziły Marsze Śmierci - więźniowie zostali zmuszeni do deportacji, na którą między innymi składała się kilkudziesięciokilometrowa piesza wędrówka w 20 stopniowym mrozie. Ci którzy sprzeciwiali się marszowi lub podczas morderczej wędrówki opadali z sił - byli mordowani przez SS-manów.
Część więźniów podjęła próby ucieczki - z różnym skutkiem. Te, które zakończyły się sukcesem były możliwe dzięki heroicznej postawie polskiej ludności.
