Speaker 1 (00:00):
Stage eleven, what utter carnage. It should have been a
bunch sprint at the end, and it turned into well,
I don't know what it turned into. My name's Dave.
This is Ride and Thrive And here's a roundup of
the chaos that was stage eleven. So it was one
hundred and fifty six kilometers and it was from Toulouse

(00:21):
back to Toulouse, so a bit of a circuit, and
it should have been a jaunt around the French countryside. Now,
watched the interviews in the morning, and basically the riders
were saying that a lot of them had ridden the
route Yester the day before on the rest day. They'd
had a little bimball round there on the rest day
with the teams, and a lot of riders were saying, oh,

(00:43):
I don't think this is going to be one for
the sprint. It looks, you know, it looks quite looks
quite hard. And there were quite a few punchy climbs
on there, a few steep climbs, nothing too long or
but just enough that you know there's going to put
the sprint is off. And so so it came to be.
Now what ended up happening was from the apt from

(01:06):
kilometer zero. There was a couple of riders made a
break for it and it was who was it. It
was marow Schmidt from Jacob Alula and Jonas Abrahanson from
Uno X. Now they set off and yeah, they were

(01:27):
kind of on their own really, and there were others
were kind of jostling for position behind them in the paloton,
and there were various attacks from the chasing group. And
in the end a couple of riders got away and
Ballerini went to join them from Astana and then Fred
Wright from from Bahrain and Bergadoo from Total Energies. They

(01:50):
made up a group of five and they kind of
went for most of the most of the stage. Those
five riders went off and before behind them there was
all sorts of attacks and it ended up in another
little elite group if you like, that were following on
the chasing group of five, and that was had some

(02:12):
big hitters in there, White van Art, Quinn Simmons as
he's kind of been been on a lot of breaks
recently from a little trek Arnolderley and MVP Matthew vander Pole.
So so they were a chasing group that had kind
of head off after them. Now behind them there was

(02:32):
also the GC contenders. You know, you have Ben Heal
and there who's the current yellow Jersey, and then of
course you've got Jonas Vingergarden pog and they were kind
of vying for position behind them, and Jonas tried a
few little, few little attacks on some little climbs, not
nothing that really came too much, and basically Poggy was

(02:53):
just covering him off. Then then towards the towards the end,
it was a couple of the riders in the chasing
group managed to get away, and it was Matthew Vanderpold
that kind of just decided to go for broke in
the sort of last ten k and try and catch
the lead group. And by this time it was Abrahamson

(03:15):
and marriage Schmidt that had broken free of that group,
so he was basically trying to chase those down. And
still so we had that going on up front, the
kind of race to the finish. Could those two make
it to the finish and a sprint or would Matthew
vander Pold catch them up. And then we had drama
behind that because with about four kilometers to go, there

(03:35):
was a crash involving none other then Pagatcha. He went down,
the rider caught the back of his bike and he
kind of went over. He got a bit of gravel
rash on his arm and he got back up. There
was no cars behind him because they were all further back,
so it was the neutral service car and a guy

(03:58):
just got off and got him back on his bike,
got the chain back on and headed him headed him
back in the right direction. Now, there was a bit
of controversy because what ended up happening the group with
the yellow jersey, which is Ben Healy, they decided to
sit up and wait for Poggy to join the back
of the group or there's are saying that they didn't

(04:19):
really have to do that, you know, but I think
they did it out of respect for Poggy, and Poggy
really respected that they did actually do that as well.
You know, he said fair play to them. And if
you listen to my Rest Day Reflections podcast and about
the unwritten rules, you know, this was one of those
unwritten rules in action basically, so they didn't have to

(04:44):
do it, and even pog wasn't even wearing the yellow
jersey either, but he's the world champion, and you know,
out of respect for that that they decided, you know,
they wanted to be in fair and square and they
wouldn't want to take advantage of a mechanical or a crash,
so they settle. He got on the back then of
that group and he came over the line with the group,

(05:06):
so nothing really changed. Sorry I haven't even mentioned the
winner of the stage. So let's go back to the
front again. Matthew vander Poul was seven hundred meters to go,
was bearing down on the front pair. However he wasn't managing,
didn't manage to catch them, and it was Jonus Abrehansoon
his first tour victory, which was fantastic, and I think

(05:28):
it was uno x's first tour victory as well, so
a really good day for them. And Marrow Schmidt from Jaco.
He came in second, with Matthew vander Pohl coming in third,
and Lee came in in fourth. So an absolutely chaotic
stage that just came out of nowhere. They were all
saying beforehand, Joor, this is one where you know the

(05:50):
commentators are going to be talking a lot about chateaus
and the French countryside and the wine growing region. But
there was so much going on in the race. And
also so I've not even mentioned that there was a
spectator or what do they call. And one of the
protester decided to run down the finishing straight when the

(06:10):
two riders were coming in, when Schmidt and Abrahamson were
coming into the finish line and right a person from
the crowd decided to run out and you know, protest
against something or other, and he got rugby tackle by
this guy might have been a security guy, but he
kind of wrestled him into the side into the crowd.
And yeah, so it was absolutely all going on. Now,

(06:34):
some interesting, some interesting things came out afterwards. Pagatcha was okay.
He was a little bit shook up when he's got
a few grazes, but he said that he's okay. He's
apportioned no blame to to the rider that I can't
I can't think who. I can't remember who the rider
was now that he was also involved in the craft,

(06:57):
but he a portioned no blame to him. He said
it was just a racing incident. You know, let's all
crack on. That rider took to social media to say, oh,
you know, I'm really sorry. You know, I didn't mean
to cause any harm. I wish you all all the best,
but I think you know, everyone's had, you know, a
little not a little chuckle. While they did have a
little chuckle. Uey had a little chuckle about it. And

(07:19):
hopefully they put that behind them. And I'm hoping that.
I'm hoping that the commissars don't see it any differently
because I saw it as a racing incident. A friend
of mine who's actually out there at the moment, he
was a little bit more, Oh, I think we should
get a yellow card for that. I don't think that
was you know, I don't think it was fair play.
So it depends how they look at it. But you know,

(07:39):
I'm all for I don't particularly think you should have
a yellow card. But he seemed like he was so
upset that he'd done it, and you know, Pog's okay,
and no, there was no kind of harm done. And
he got onto the back of that bunch and joined
joined the group that went back over the line. So
so let's kind of draw a line under that one,

(08:02):
I think, and just put it down to an absolute,
I say, chaotic stage. But it's great to watch, you know,
It's just kind of what we watched by gracing four.
So fair play to the to the guys we're putting
on a bit of a show for us yesterday because
it could have been fairly boring that stage, so well
done to them. So that brings us on to stage twelve,

(08:25):
which is I think this is pronounced ol auc h
al to how to Cam. Now this is the first
big test and one for the GC, so we'll really
see who's made of what. So there are some categorized climb,
four categorized climbs, and so there's one CAT one climb

(08:50):
with forty six klometers to go, that's the Caldou sur Salor.
We've got a CAT four climb, a CAT two climb,
and then we finish up the big one, the how
To Camp, which is an order cascory climb, which means
it's unclassifiable, so and it's a mountaintop finish as well,
so it's a mountain finish, so that means there will

(09:14):
be extra points available for that. So the chances are
we are going to see a changing hands of the
Yellow jersey. You never know, but the chances are that
we will. We will probably see a changing hands in
the King of the Mountains competition because it's the first
real points that are going to be off offered up
for the for the Polka Dot jersey, the King of

(09:35):
the Mountains jersey, So we'll we'll see about that, the
green jersey. That probably there is a sprint, an intermediate
sprint with around about eighty five kilometers to go, so
but that I don't think that will affect the sprinter's jersey,
so that might not probably won't change hands. So what's
going to happen in the race, Well, this is with

(09:57):
this tour this year, absolute anything could happen. I'm thinking
that Jonas Vinger Guarde is really gonna and Vismar the
team Vismolia Bike are really going to try and put
Emirates and particularly Pagatcha under some pressure today and really
you know, relentless attacks and really go for it on

(10:19):
the mountains. So I think it's worked for him before
on this particular mountain, so I think he might he
might just just kind of see this as an opportunity
to try and put some time, put some time on Pergatcha. Now, well, however,
Pergatcha's feeling today is that you know, that's another matter.

(10:41):
He's obviously going to be a bit battered than bruised
from yesterday from the crash. I'm hoping he's one hundred percent,
but you know, if he's not, then it might add
to a bit of the drama and I'd hate for
him to think. But then again, that's by crazy. You
have to put up with these things, you know, you
have to to crack on. And you know in mind
as well, the Team Emirates are already a rider down

(11:05):
in Almada. So yeah, it will be a fascinating day
and I can't wait to watch it. So I will
put up a report of the of stage twelve, but
later on after the after the stage, and we'll see
where we go for that, and then we're we've got
more more stages after that into the mountains, but we'll

(11:27):
need a breath just to just to catch up with
that stage from yesterday. Okay, folks, thank you so much
for listening. I shall speak to you again soon. A
revoir
