Speaker 1 (00:01):
A brutal day in the Pyramids with over three eight
hundred meters of climbing and over one hundred and eighty
point six kilometers in length, culminating in the legendary summit
finish of the how To Camp. Now, this is the
first of three stages in the Pyrenees, and we were
expecting fireworks and we got them. My name is Dave
(00:23):
and this is the Ride and Thrive podcast with today
at the tour. Okay, folks, how did it all pan out? Then? Well,
to start with, it was the obligatory breakaway. Fifty one
riders got away. In the initial break there was a
bit of jostling around and this was all kind of
(00:44):
going to you know, going to the normal plan that
you get on these type of stages. And in the
end it was Bruno Amariv to Kathleen, a G two
r who's the French time Child Champion. He took it
up a bit of a solo effort. However, he managed
to get to the slopes of the how To come
at the end and then it kind of all fell
(01:05):
apart for him and it was the big boys that
took over from there. Taddy Pagatcha attacked with twelve kiloments
is to go on the final climb and just solo
to victory and take him back at the yellow jersey.
It's going to be really hard to get that back
off him now, I think as well. He finished two
minutes and ten seconds ahead of finger Guard, who showing
(01:27):
no signs of weakness after his crash on stage eleven.
So I did say this morning or in my previous podcast,
you know there might be a few little chinks of
weakness in his armor, in Pergatcha's armor, but it didn't
really prove to be the case today. So this is
his third stage win at the tour and his twentieth
(01:48):
career Tour Tour de France stage victory. So Chapeau to
taday Pagatcha. So all the riders that didn't do so
well today, Ben Healy, who was in yellow, he cracked
hard on the climbs and lost over thirteen minutes, so
(02:08):
he felt eleventh overall. Remco Evna Pol also suffered losing
three minutes thirty five slipping down behind on the GC
and Jonas Ingerguard didn't have the best day. He stayed
on in second though, so he just couldn't match Pergatcha's
pace and in third place it was Florian Lipovitz, who
(02:31):
had a valiant rider was actually catching Vinger guard towards
the end, so that was a big plus for him.
Oscar Onley he did really well yet again, and he
is proving to be the absolute star of the show.
He's British, he's Scottish, so we call him British not English.
But yeah, but yeah, he finished fifth, so you know,
(02:56):
he's mixing it up with the big boy. So he's
doing really well and he's being really consistent as well.
So a full a full chapeau to him. So so
what were the what were the tactics Where did it
fall apart for visma Well, I think early on I
did say again in my in my preview show that
(03:18):
I thought that that Vismar were going to try and
pressureize UAE and you know, try and bully them, and
and it was kind of the case really that they
kept attacking mini attacks and just trying to you know,
death by a thousand cuts and it kind of backfired
on them. So you've got like the likes to set course,
Simon Yates and Jorgensen, they kept going to the front
(03:40):
of the stage, trying to push the push the pace
on the on the early climbs, they went up the
cold solo and they were trying to trying to thin
things out and really put pressure on Team UA on
the riders on Pog support. However, it kind of ended
up wearing their own riders out, and you know, Vinger
(04:03):
Guard was kind of left with riders dropping left, right
and center. So Jorgenson just just blew up and Vinger
Guard was left isolated when when Pog attacked, so I
mean Pog's own riders he had, who did he have
with him? He had Well, Tim Wellins, Simon Yates, and
(04:24):
Naveaas and coming onto the final climb, Yeates kind of
shook his head. He kind of had enough and he
couldn't stick with it. Wellens did a little stint on
the front, and then Navaya's did the surprising surprisingly did
most of the work on the front and he towed
sort of pa gotcha up the earlier, earlier part of
(04:45):
the climb, and then Pog just went eleven point eight
kilometers to go. Pog just went and left ving A
Guard for dust. It was still a long way to go,
so we didn't see a massive lead build up straight away,
but he enough for him to get away and then
he just kind of steady away, just just kept the
(05:06):
pressure on, just just slowly turning the screw. Now, in contrast, Ue,
I think they they got all they kind of got
the aces, or they've got the ace if you like,
so they could be a bit more controlled and calculated,
and that's exactly what they were. They saved all their energy,
you know, they responded to some of the attacks, but
(05:28):
generally saved their energy and just let Bismar do their
thing and do all the attacking. And it was on
the final climb that the UA just unleashed the wrath
and the fury of the remaining riders. So yeah, so
that was that really pog you know, gracious as ever
(05:50):
winning He did dedicate his win to a rider that
unfortunately passed away in another race over in Italy and
a young guy, so he did he did dedicate the
win to that. So I thought that was a nice touch,
just basically saying, you know, this is we're only riding
(06:12):
bikes for Gonn's sake, you know, it's somebody said so
one of the reporters asked him, is it a war?
You know? And he's like, it's not a war, you know,
it's a game, and we're effectively playing a game, and
I just I just want to match today, and you know,
there's other things that are going on that are far
worse than this, and you know, he didn't he didn't
like it being called a war. You know. So Samuel
(06:35):
Privatera that was the young Italian, nineteen year old Italian
rider who died in another race over in Italy. So yeah,
so Chapa again all round to per Caapture. Now that
moves us on to tomorrow. We're staying in the Pyrenees
tomorrow and we've got Stage thirteen, which is a mountain
(06:58):
time trial which is set to test my pronunciation skills
if you like. Loudonville to payer Agudas, Payera Goudas ten
point nine kilometers, like I said, and the average gradient
is seven point nine percent and it ramps up to
(07:19):
sixteen percent in places, so quite it's a short one,
but it is going to be brutal. So I'm going
to be really interested to see how they're going to
set the bikes up. So you're not going to have
probably not going to have your traditional aero TT bikes
set up. It's it's going to be more a lightweight
(07:40):
climbing bike. But you know there's going to be thoughts
going on to what weeel set to use. You know
that I did they use the aero helmets. It's it's
going to be an interesting one to see what they choose.
With all that put aside, I think that paulk has
to be the favorite for this. You'd be hard hard
push to look look past him. I think Jonas finger
(08:04):
guard he would probably give a good account of himself.
Certainly Top three. Remco Evnopole is a T T specialist,
so he could could do well keep her out as well.
For Oscar Onley, he's on fire at the moment, but
there's any number of other other riders that might give
it a go. Carlos Rodriguez, who's the the climbing prodigy
(08:28):
for the in the Oscarnadiers. He's not had a really
good tour so far, so I think he'll be desperate
to put in a good show. And then you've got
the likes of Mateo Jorgenson for Vismar and Simon Yates.
You know that they're all that, they're all there, They're
all going to be there in the mix, So we'll
see how that goes. And that's going on tomorrow, which
(08:50):
is Friday, the eighteenth of July. You're getting mixed up
with your days, so we'll look out for that, and
I will I was going to do this every couple
of days, but actually there's been so action packed the
races that I've I've kind of taken to summon them
up every day, which is kind of suiting me because
(09:11):
I like to look at all the action and digest
it all and then I get it out there straight
away because normally there's not much to talk about, but
in these races, recently, in these stages, there's been so
much to talk about is warranted that each stage has
warranted its own episode. So I hope you're still enjoying
this and my new my new sound effects. So we're
(09:34):
going to We're going to leave it there and I
will hopefully speak to you again tomorrow with a roundup
of the time trial and we're going to get a
bit of their accordion to play it out. Okay, speech
you later, guys, Bye for now,
