S2 E2: The Scandalous San Franciscan: Alma Spreckels

Alma de Brettville Spreckels is considered the great-grandmother of San Francisco. Born to a working-class family of Danish immigrants, Alma used her incredible beauty to claw her way up the social and financial ladder. The result would be a scandalous career of nude modeling and a breach of promise suit where she sued her intended fiance for $50,000 when he refused to marry her. Despite the scandalous newspaper reports of the trial, Alma was still able to bag the wealthy son of a sugar magnate and live happily ever after. In Alma's case, "Happily Ever After" involved spending lavish sums on a new mansion and eventually an art museum that operates to this day.
