For nylig offentliggjorte forskere en artikel om gamle mudderbanker på Mars, som bygger på et billed af et særligt hexagonalt mønster i mudderet. Spørgsmålet er om dette mudder ,som har gennemgået millioner af års cykler af opfugtning og udtørring kan være ophav til tidligt liv på Mars. Umiddelbart virker ideen vanvittig, men det er faktisk sådan at forskere i en del år har arbejdet med at sandsynliggøre at livet kan være opstået som et resultat af gentagne cykler af opfugtning af sand eller mudder, der har koncentreret mængden af organiske molekyler lokalt og gjort det muligt at forme komplekse organiske molekyler. Netop denne teori arbejder Tue Hassenkam fra Globe Institutet på Københavns Universitet med at eftervise med praktiske eksperimenter, som vi tidligere har omtalt i podcast på vores Science Stories platform.
