(00:03):
Ladies and gentlemen, Welcome back toanother edition of the Scouts on our podcast.
Today, we're pleased to welcome anew guest to our show. You
know him as a license plate guy. You were His first license played around
his neck to a game when hewas sixteen, and the rest is history.
He's attended every Giants home and awaygame since two thousand. Not only
a diehard fan, but a philanthropicleader who goes above and beyond to make
(00:25):
a meaningful, meaningful impact off thefield. LPG, welcome to the show.
Thanks for making the time, Buddy, oh Man, I really appreciate
it. If I need a hypeman, You're right, maybe I need
we try to do right by you. I appreciate it, man. Thanks.
Speaking of philanthropic endeavors, the SexyDexi game, let's hype that up
(00:47):
for a bit because I know yougot that coming up in the next month
or so, and it seems likesuch an awesome experience. I got family
in town that week, and I'mtrying to convince my brother in law just
sneak out, like behind the girl'sback and just make the drive down there
to check it out. Because theroster you got of former players, like
the Super Bowl roster. Everything you'vebeen releasing such a cool initiative, So
(01:11):
take a minute to just kind ofhype that up, tell people where they
can find the tickets and everything likethat. Yeah, I really appreciate you
bringing that up and even starting withthat, because I gotta be honest,
it's the greatest thing that I've everdone in my life. I mean,
you know, I started out atthe Landing coll as the Landing Collins celebrity
(01:32):
softball game. And a funny storyis I was with Landing in Orlando,
Florida for the Pro Bowl and wewere talking. I was like, we
should do some kind of charity gameand he was like okay, and I'm
like, what do you mean,Okay, you know that's it. You
just say okay, just run withit. And he's like, yeah,
run with it. I'm like, well, what are we gonna do?
And then we came up with thisdodge worn softball and I remember calling Brandon
(01:53):
Jacobs to be like, look,I just became like cool with Landing,
but if he's not, like hedoes and get the current team like we
gotta do something, man, Ithink he's gonna leave me high and dry.
Not only didn't Landen leave me highand drive, but Brandon came through
and we wound up having like sixtyplayers at this Super Bowl forty two and
(02:15):
forty six, first the current teamwith land and Collins, and it was
it was so cool, it wasso much fun. Fast forward, you
know, three four years later,we've raised over one hundred and twenty five
thousand dollars and then landed, youknow, ships off to Washington and COVID
hit and I got stuck for acouple of years with no one obviously couldn't
(02:36):
get together in twenty anyway, andthen I asked. I remember Daniel Jones
and Barkley were next on tap forme, both in contract negotiations, you
know, both in either you're gonnaget tagged or not get tagged. So
it was like they were like,LPG, we really can't commit. I'm
(02:57):
like, oh my god, whoam I gonna ask? And then just
went by the wayside until this year. I asked Dexter Lawrence. We met
a few times. I let himknow what it was about, and he
looked me dead in my face andhe's like, I know what it's about.
I'm like, how do you howdo you know what it's about.
He's like, Joe, I wasthere my rookie year. I'm like,
get out of here. So itwas like I didn't have to sell it.
(03:20):
It already sold itself. And youknow, he enjoyed the dodgeball,
he enjoyed excuse me, the homeon derby. He enjoyed the softball game.
So here it is. We're aboutfive weeks out. You know.
The game is gonna take place inRockland County at Clover Stadium in Pomona,
New York. It is the SuperBowl forty two and forty six Giants versus
(03:44):
Dexter Lawrence and the current team.I do have another dozen players from other
Super Bowl eras, like Phil Simmsis coming, Harry Carson is coming,
I'm in the talks with George Martin, Jim Burt, you know, Joe
Mars, Rodney Hampton, Otis Andersonfrom twenty five. Like, I just
have so many extra people come intothis event because they've heard about it,
(04:08):
and that's that's pretty dawn cool tohave one hundred plus giants show up in
your backyard and it's insane. Andif I don't do anything, you know,
for the rest of my life.Being able to raise hundreds of thousands
of dollars for a charity and gettingto hang out with my idols is I
(04:30):
can't ask for anything better than that, and I appreciate you bringing that up.
It is May eighteen. It's funnytoo because Dexter Lawrence was like,
listen, I want to call itthe Dexter Lawrence, I mean the Sexy
Dexi Celebrity softball game. And Iwas like, dex, I love you,
bro. I'm like, I don'twant to call the whole thing the
Sexy Texi celebrity sobo game. I'mlike, I'll give you the website,
(04:53):
but please don't call it that. And we agreed. So it's a Dexter
Lawrence celebrity sobo game, but it'syou know, you go to sexy for
the tickets, which is really funny. I was like, you just make
it a little more professional, please, and he was. He was laughing
through the whole day. But we'reready to rock and roll. We have
we have everybody on tap. Youknow, former team rosters said it probably
(05:14):
seventy seventy five guys and the currentroster is being formed now. That's so
cool, man and I appreciate youbreaking it down. Dex is a hell
of a dude. I remember whenhe got drafted. He was somebody I
was really excited that the Giants took, as he was somebody I really wanted
them to take. And my wifegot me one of his like first jerseys
off the line. We went tothe first preseason game, and it actually
(05:40):
was his first NFL game. Hehad never been to an NFL game before,
so his first game he's playing inthe preseason was first NFL game.
We're by a tunnel and the dlineman ended up practicing right in front of
where we're at. We're like inone of the early rows, and I
had the jersey on. My wifetelling me that she saw him looking at
(06:00):
me, and everything couldn't have beenmore high because I'm sure he's like ninety
sevens that limbald Joseph, like, who's yeah, right right? And I
did, and I did. Iturned around so you could see it with
him and everything. And then thefunniest part of that game, I was
in a concession line and there wasthis kid had to be like, I
don't know, eight or ten yearsold, and I don't think he had
(06:20):
a parent with him. He's justlike in the concession line, like getting
popcorn or something, and he turnsto me. He's like a Dexter Lawrence
Jersey already and I'm like, yeah, dude, he's legit. And he's
like, how do you know? And I'm just like, I didn't go
into like, you know, Iscout and like all this kind of stuff.
I was just like, I justknow, man, you know,
it is what it is. AndI'll never forget that little kid. I
(06:40):
wonder what happened to him. Butdex is such a cool dude, man,
and the fact that he's willing totake the time to do this just
goes to show you know, hischaracters, personality, all that kind of
stuff. So happy to be promotedwith you as much as we can here.
Yeah, I really appreciate it.Thank you. And and yeah,
those stories about Dexter is you know, everything that you hear and see is
on the money. I mean,he is so good at his job and
(07:03):
he's and he's just as good offthe field. So it's pretty cool.
Out of curiosity, which player areyou most excited to see at the game?
Wow? What a great question,uh, because it's you know,
going into my fifth time running it. Some really and I'm friends with a
lot of the older you know, crew, I'll be honest with you,
(07:29):
I wasn't. I guess I'm breakingnews here. I'm in talks with Shockey
some snap kind of really open thathe shows. If he does it,
he would be it because no one'seven seen the darn guy. You know.
He doesn't he doesn't do any events, He doesn't do anything like that,
so it would be it would beso awesome to see him. He
(07:49):
does have another event that weekend. Some trying to trying to tell him to
move it. But if it wasn'thim, it would probably be Phil Simms,
which I think would be pretty cool. And uh, you know,
other than that, you know,I got, I got like Bobby Johnson,
like could for the older crowd outthere listening, Like you're talking about
(08:11):
Phil Simms to Bobby Johnson on thirdand seventeen in MINUTESO like like the memories
that just flood by when you're talkingabout Super Bowl champions I was just a
kid too at twenty one, atyou know, super Bowl twenty one.
But like, you know, gettingto talk to all these players about coming
in is I don't know, it'smind boggling to me. Like Phil McConkie's
(08:31):
like, oh, thank you somuch for the offer. I can't make
it. Like Phil mccakie, myguy, you know so, uh so
I would uh you know what,I'm gonna answer it with Phil Simms,
all right, cool, Yeah,Shocky would be awesome, Miami shock.
Yeah. As soon as he confirms, I'll change Phil Simms to Shot.
I'm sure, I'm sure. Well, I'm sure. We could talk about
(08:54):
those guys all day. But weare here to talk about the draft.
So let's jump into that real quick. You're are you going to I will
be front and center, baby,Hell yeah, love to hear it.
So what are you most excited aboutthis year for the draft? Loaded question?
But I mean such a loaded question, bro, I mean, you
know every it's it's such a shame. You know, Giants football is not
(09:20):
that good right now, and itshows by where they have been picking.
I hate getting all geared up forthe draft because it means the season must
have not been that good where you'repicking, in my opinion, And uh,
you know, every year I getI get all every Giants fan,
(09:41):
actually all NFL, but all Giantsfans we're talking only Giants here. You
know, we get we get gassedup as much as possible. We get
fired up for the season. Iwas most fired up for last year.
I thought they were going to attacktwo thousand and two twenty three, and
then the Dallas game happened, andit literally just took the win out of
(10:07):
everybody's sales pretty pretty quickly. Youknow, getting back to the draft,
you get, you get fired up. I was in love with Evan Neil.
I would you know, like youhave your favorite players and sometimes they
work out, sometimes they don't workout, but being a Giants fan,
you're going to show them support nomatter what. So here we are getting
(10:31):
ready for the draft. I thinkI'm most excited for the Giants to either
pull the trigger and make a tradeand move up and get a quarterback,
or stay where they are and geta stud receiver. And I look at
the top three receivers. We allknow who they are, just like I
(10:52):
looked at Jamar, Chase Waddle andDevon day Smith, and I truly believe
the Giants wind up. You know, the talks about Harrison Junior falling,
I don't think he will. Ithink the Giants will probably tag neighbors if
he's there. But if they're reallyset on a quarterback, let me tell
(11:13):
you why they have to go goget it. And this is obviously just
my opinion. I am a Jonesfan. I look at Jones like I
looked at Eli. Give me somebody, give me, give me Eli until
you get someone better. Don't wastemy time with Davis Webb, don't waste
my time with all these other quarterbacks. Just give me somebody else, or
(11:35):
give me the Hall of Famer.Well, I'm looking at the same thing
with Daniel Jones. Don't give mesomebody else that you think is gonna lead
you to the Promised Land because hewasn't or not here yet. If the
Giants wind up to draft a quarterbackand they believe it's it's it's whether they
stay at six or not, thenI'm gonna rock with Shane. But the
(12:00):
reason why it is time. Idon't think all of a sudden he's gonna
find it in year six. Ialso am really concerned, not about the
knee. I don't care about theknee, actually care about the neck,
because two neck injuries you got ifyou're a regular NFL player, not even
(12:20):
a quarterback and you have a neckinjury, You're out two to four.
Daniel Jones's third neck injury will besix to eight, if not David Wilson's
career ending. You really have togo get that quarterback when you have a
chance to. And yes, yes, he'll sit behind Jones for a year.
(12:41):
See what happens. See how thegame film gather game is so fast
in front of his eyes. Andwe'll and we'll see what happens after that
contract being signed. And I'm sorry, I'm not gonna sit there and say
what a waste of money because itwasn't at the time whether they should have
done Barkley and not Jones, orJones and not Barkley. You could you
(13:05):
could freaking argue, argue, yeah, argue away. It's so easy to
say, oh hahaha, look atthe money spent last place, this is
haven't done this and that. Herewe are getting ready for the draft.
I'm excited to see whether it's aquarterback or wide receiver. Now, if
you're gonna tag somebody else at six, I'll kind of be a little bit
(13:28):
annoyed. So you're pretty vocal aboutoffensive line, and I'm a huge offensive
line guy, I think we're nowherenear done on the offensive line. We've
been so painfully abysmal on the offensiveline for far too long that I'm sort
of an advocate of if you takea quarterback or a wide receiver, it's
(13:52):
not like either of those players aregoing to catapult us to a super Bowl,
you know. So if you're goingto allocate that sort of raft capital,
particularly in a year where offensive lineis so strong, in the first
round, granted it wouldn't be atrade up, it would be a trade
down, or you're sticking around.Taking Joe Walt, who I mean is
one of the top tackle prospects we'veseen come out in recent memory. You
(14:16):
know who he's you know what he'sprojected to be, like, right,
his father Andrew Thomas. Yeah, right, exactly, he was compared to
Andrew Thomas. Now, don't getme wrong, they take Joe Walt,
I'm not complaining, right, AndThat's where I'm at. It's like,
all right, so if we takea wide receiver who's throwing him the ball?
Daniel for a year, maybe, but like, where's the rhythm in
(14:37):
that? Blah blah blah. Wetake a quarterback, they're sitting on the
bench waiting for Daniel to get hurtagain, and then the offense still isn't
clicking. So I feel like somany fans have this short term perspective of
we just need something sexy now toget the offense going, get the spark,
blah blah blah. Be at aquarterback, Brassies greener, YadA,
YadA YadA, or a wide receiver. But long term, if we're actually
(15:00):
trying to build a franchise, youknow, like taking an offensive lineman,
even if it's a trade down alittle bit, and then you get some
more draft capital we'll play with.Like, I don't really see the rash
now behind taking a quarterback or awide receiver. I really hope we don't
take a quarterback. I think we'regonna end up taking a wide receiver.
And I'm a big a dunda guy. I agree with you that I think
(15:20):
neighbors is more their style. Soif it's neighbors and a Doonsay there,
I think they probably go neighbors.I would prefer a Donsay, But you
know, as another offensive line guylike myself, I just think it would
be we'd be remiss and not reallyconsider taking an offensive Lineman. I mean,
look, you're I've seen some ofyour stuff, and you are you
(15:43):
know, you talk, you know, you're, you're you break down the
college guys very well, and youknow what's going on, especially in the
in the in the the line area. But I gotta tell you that's the
one spot where you can do somefree agency work and and and later in
(16:04):
the draft type guys. We couldsay that about anybody. I mean,
but you're right, a lot ofus just see the fancy new car and
want to drive it right away.I I the only way and if the
Giants stick to those guns that yousaid, the only way is to,
(16:25):
yeah, trade down and take andget some draft because the only way you're
gonna fix. Look, your Alnemanain't gonna catapult us to the super Bowl.
A lineman isn't going to a widereceiver, is it going to it?
A quarterback is it going to?The Giants are pieces away from that.
So I do understand what you're saying. Just give me somebody that's gonna
(16:47):
help them out any any flavor ofthe week, as long as these just
give me somebody that's gonna help themout. And then and then just have
a good draft across the board. That's my problem with the offensive line though,
is normally, and a lot ofpeople say, and I think there's
validity to it, you can getquality offensive lineman day two, day three,
(17:08):
and a lot of the folks whoend up panning out Pro bowlers,
etcetera, etcetera, are day two, day three guys. However, the
Giants' allocation of draft capital towards Daytwo and day three offensive lineman has been
absolutely abysmal, and there's no returnon investment whatsoever. So that's where I'm
like, if you got all thesesurefire guys in round one, I mean,
(17:30):
I like a lot of the dudesday two, day three, and
I'm not upset with it. Ifthey do focus more on taking somebody day
two, day three, I hopethat they double down on the offensive line
so that we at least hedge ourbet there a little bit. You know,
we can't just take like one guyand hope for the best, like
that they're going to be a Probowler's starter first year or whatever. Whatever.
(17:52):
So I agree with you, like, just something to get the offense
going, But I am super concernedabout quarterback and wide receiver. The impact
I'll have because you take a widereceiver, we don't have a quarterback.
You take a quarterback, we don'thave the number one wide receiver. So
either way, we're kind of screwed. But it's a building block. Just
curious. Did you want Neil? No? I did not. His tape
(18:15):
was phenomenal. Bro I was moreinto Ikey Ikuanu that year. Projected Ikey
as a guard, not a tackle, and I think a lot of people
had a problem with us taking aguard that high. I thought he was
going to be much better suited asa guard, and we've had guard issues
(18:36):
ever since then, you know whatI mean. But I mean I broke
down. I broke down Neil's college, and his footwork was amazing and his
speed was amazing. I think it'sjust work ethic. Don't know what the
hell I'm watching. Yeah, no, I know there's no continuity in like
(18:56):
the offensive line, coaching and offensesall. I mean, there's a lot
of factors, and we hope thatEvan Neil turns it around, particularly with
like what they spent on him andeverything. And I'm pulling for the guy,
but so is everybody. So everybodyshould Yeah, right, they're killing
They should be and where I'm atis like, look, if he moves
into guard, if he says tackle, whatever, whatever, we still need
(19:17):
somebody on that right side to helphim out because running is gonna play on
the left side and we don't haveso he screwed either way if we don't
allocate a premium pick to help fortifythat side of the line. And that's
what yeah, I'm saying. I'msaying, like, hey, I made
I made shirts. I don't thinkit was last year's draft. The year
(19:37):
before it was nine men. Iwanted. We wound up with eleven picks,
but I wanted nine linemen in thedraft. Nine you and me both,
man, If they spent every pickon the offensive and defensive line every
year, I'd be thrilled, youknow what I mean, just straight up
like, and we don't do it. We don't even get remotely close to
doing it, which is the problem. But we could talk about the offensive
(20:00):
line forever. I don't want toharp on it too much, but assuming
we stayed shocked and they go widereceiver in the first round, I'm gonna
eliminate the quarterback thing because I don'teven want to think about it as a
reality yeah, Day two, secondand third round. What are some of
the positions that you think we reallyneed to address. You have to get
(20:25):
a corner, bro, Yeah, yep, you have to get a corner.
Yep. What are we doing there? I don't know. I have
a couple of mine. But youyou know there's somebody that what's his name
again? That oh man. Therewere two guys that picked the Giants going
corner at six, So QUINNYA.Mitchell I would not be mad, Joe,
(20:47):
I would not I literally talked aboutit on my last show, and
I swear to you if they doit, like, I'm gonna talk to
Naggie about them next week when he'son, because dude, Mitchell's legit dude.
And so you think about like whenthe corners are going, they're all
going like four or five, six, I'm even higher, So why not
I think that I think they're goingafter the barrage. I think quarterbacks going
(21:08):
one, two, three. Widereceivers you know, are in the mix,
or somebody jumps in and grabs theirplayer. I just said to somebody,
I don't mind the Giants taking aquarterback. I don't mind the Giants
going their wide receiver way and Idon't mind Joe Allt and I don't mind
Mitchell, but then again, letme throw you, let me throw you
(21:30):
somebody else. What if the Giantssaid screw all of you would take it
bours. So I don't mind itconceptually, but I'm really concerned about his
injury and the tread on the tires. So they used and abused him at
Georgia, you know what I mean, and like big time, that's my
(21:51):
if. If he only played oneyear at Georgia and he didn't get hurt,
absolutely not even a question in mymind. But the way that they
used and abused him, and thefact he's not a huge guy, He's
going to take a bunch of lowhits to the legs, Like for drafting
someone that high and particularly tight end, which most of the time when you
draft a tight end in the topten rarely ever works out, you know
(22:14):
what I mean. Like there's justmuch against but Bosby the most about him,
Yeah, or the pick not him, the pick. I would be
so upset after going with Waller, who I was like, oh my god,
the Giants got Darren Waller, thatWaller retire just to get this tight
end at six? Who I believeis undersized and beat up who is still
(22:41):
very good. I would be like, we're just replacing. Where are we
getting better here? Right? Whereare we knocking it out the park?
So so I wouldn't I wouldn't beupset, but I wouldn't love it.
Yeah, I agree that it makessense that I know man, I know
me too, me too. Myissue with taking Mitchell at six and I
(23:04):
would take him at six. Imean, most people be like, oh,
you got to trade down a littlebit, like you're insane to take
him at six. I don't thinkthat's crazy talk at all. Exactly exactly,
he will be gone. He's astud. I love his attitude.
I love his cockiness, a swagger, everything about him. Saying that he's
the best player to ever come outof the MAC when you've got like Randy
Moss coming out of there, someof these other big names. I mean,
I love and the way he competedat the Senior Bowl, the combine,
(23:26):
like nothing faced this kid, andcoming out of a small school like
Toledo, normally that stage will faceyou. And dealing with the New York
media is tough, and he doesn'tget bothered by it at all. So
well, the people thinking Mitchell isgonna fall like a like a Joey Porter
junior, or or like a likea Banks or they're not going. They're
(23:47):
not going that. They're gonna they'regonna go. That's gonna be more like
Cooper Jean, the guy out ofIowa is gonna fall down there, and
Nate Wiggans is gonna fall down there, kool Ai McKinstry is gonna fall down
there. But so this is myissue, right, It's like if you
take a cornerback at six, thenoffensive line wide receiver, you're not getting,
(24:08):
you know, day two, it'snot the same shutout, you know.
So it's like, as much asI would love Mitchell there, that's
why I'm more into an offensive linemanbecause then round two, like I'm a
huge Kyrie Jackson guy. This dudeout of Oregon six three, six four,
it's Alabama transfer legit, length likelong arms, everything, ball,
(24:30):
hawk like it, tenacious player, love everything about him. There's there's a
lot of quality guys on day twothat could still come in and start at
corner where offensive line it's a littlebit more flaky wide receiver. They're not
necessarily a bona fide number one, because there's gonna be a run on them
before we pick it forty seven,So that's my only concern. Would take
it. I really liked, Ireally liked who you just picked because I
(24:53):
think if the Giants go, they'regoing big. They're not going to go
tiny anymore. They're done with thetiny corner. So you know, I
don't know from your lips to Shane'sears, buddy, I hope that's the
case. But yeah, all right, So if you had to ignore a
position of need this year because we'veonly got six picks, you know,
(25:18):
and assuming we don't trade down andget more picks, and we got all
these holes that we got to fill, you know, corner, o line,
running back, wide receiver, youknow, like, what what would
you? Yeah, you know what? I would roll with the safeties that
we have. I agreed, that'sonly because you told me I could ignore.
(25:41):
I still would draft later rounds. But if you're telling me I had
to ignore, then I'll roll whatwe have this year. And I also
think it's not like an incredible draftfor safeties by any means either, So
a position of need unless you wereignoring, right, right, But we
have to ignore somewhere. You know, it's gonna be safety for me.
(26:03):
Yeah, I don't think the Giantsare going to get themselves caught up in
another safety for you know, that'sgonna want sixteen million dollars a year in
a couple of years. So it'sI think they're gonna ignore it. I
do. I think They're gonna runwith it with who they have, and
I'm fine with it. Yep.Yeah, I'm hoping Dane Belton comes on.
I like that kid a lot.But we got some good, good
(26:23):
folks in that in that secondary. And if we add a corner Jit corner
day one, day two, thenthat gives you a little bit more breathing
room in the back half of thefield. So agree with you there.
So you're real tight with the players, you're always on the sidelines. What
sort of the culture under day ballthat you see and what do you think
(26:47):
so like the personalities you know backin the Cofflin era, they want to
discipline guys by the book, youknow, diligent, all that kind of
stuff. What do you think thenew vibe is under day ball and what
do you think culturally we need inthe locker room with the current roster that
we have already in place. Yeah, I mean they the group that we
(27:10):
have, the group that they havein there, they're pretty tight. They
respect the crap out a table andShane because I think that Dabel lets them
be who they are. You know, with Kauflin, he let them,
he let them be who they were, but you had to be respectful about
(27:33):
it. And and you know,it's just a different type of athlete than
it was just a few short yearsago. To be honest, Look,
you know I'm gonna get laughed atfor this. Bob I was a big
Judge fan, and I mean hewas hired to come in there and rule
with an iron fist, I believe, and get get crap in order.
(27:56):
And then I think that Dabel camein here and was able to go off
of that and let the guys bewho they who they are. I heard
people don't even want to come towork sometimes when Judge was there, and
with Dable it's a little different.So so I think they're a tight knit
group. I think they're they're tryingto still find their identity and net that
(28:19):
I think comes with winning. So, I mean I've watched Dabel and Shane.
I like the tenacity that he has. I like the the respect he
shows his players. So I don'tknow, man, I hope they grow
into it. I hope they believein the system. I hope Dabel takes
(28:40):
a little more control of the offense. And I don't know, I believe
this team could work together. Ihad a few more pieces of let's see
what's going on here. So inthe day ball era, you got any
good locker room stories, like rookiestories. I don't know if they're Hayes
in the same way as back whenEli was in town and pulling pranks on
(29:03):
people all the time. But yougot any stories from the day ball era.
Now you I mean, you couldn'teven tell the Eli stories. There
wasn't really social media, so itwas you know how people look at Eli
now, It was like, ohmy god, he's such a character.
Blah blah blah. He was alwayslike that. Man. He was doing
stuff up in Albany that I can'teven speak about. He was He's a
(29:26):
He was a funny dude and stillis a funny dude. No, I
don't have any like Prince of MukaMara stories. We're getting thrown in tubs
and stuff like that, they don'tthey keep I think after Judge they kept
more of a tight ship. Gable, I'm sure he's told the players like
what happens in house stays in house, and I think the players have adapted
(29:51):
to that. I have zero storiesthat would be PG anyway, but I
have zero, zero stories that's goingon on Dable's watch. So, rookies,
it's tough to transition in the NFLto begin with, right, particularly
a huge market like New York City, tri state fan base, all this
(30:12):
kind of stuff. So do youthink there needs to be an emphasis when
you're really vetting draft prospects on ifthey're going to be able to handle that
stage, Like I think for Danielit was like a huge shakeup coming from
a small program like Duke to haveto deal with the New York City media
and everything like that. So inyour interaction with folks like Big Decks or
(30:36):
any of these players you talked toover the years, like do you think
that coming into a New York marketis really daunting and something that you know
some of them shy away from andcan't really handle that limelight, or do
you think it just kind of havingthat cohesion in the locker room and older
guys to look up to really helpthem get over that. Like, what
do you think contending with the limelightof New York City is a rookies?
(30:59):
Like, uh, first of all, you using Jones right off the bat,
could anybody handle it more perfectly thanhe has? I mean, I
mean you want to talk about learningfrom the best, he really did.
Jones handles the media perfectly, regardlessof the small duke or not. He
(31:22):
is very good at what he does. And it's funny that you asked me
that question because I literally just hadthis conversation last week. I was with
with Banks and you know, comingfrom Maryland, and and you know,
I asked him about the New Yorkmedia and he's like, Yo, they're
(31:44):
all over you, you know. But he's a character in it in itself,
and he's a funny dude. AndI think he also handles the media
well. But I specifically asked him, what's the difference, Like, you
know, what are you not usedto? He's like, the amount of
people that are around your locker, the brass of the of the questions right
(32:08):
off the bat. They are taughtvery well by inside how to handle such
things. So getting to your originalquestion about do I think that it has
to be vetted harder or or moreintense? You know what, I used
(32:32):
to believe that. I also usedto believe in the giants way of oh
no, you can't touch that guy. He had a problem or two in
college. That shit is long gone, my friend. I don't care about
the Laramie ton Sell smoking thing.I don't care about Jalen Carter's problem.
(32:53):
And yes it was a problem, and no disrespect to anybody that was hurt.
But when you see these guys gettingpicked, you know, you don't
give up on them because they hadan issue or they had a problem.
That is when you do take careof them, and if you vetted them
well, then you overlook that issue. So instead, somebody like the Eagles
(33:15):
picks up a Jalen Carter who's goingto be wrecking our quarterback for twelve years.
I'm tired of putting our ties upto our necks, buttoning everything up
and making sure that that person, you know, goes to church every Sunday.
It's okay if they do not.Yeah, Max Crosby, another case
(33:37):
in point there, Matt, Max, I mean, what a checkered pass
that guy has and a lot ofpeople shot away from him in the draft
just because you know it's hard, and you know, I'm fifty to fifty
on it. Like Tovandre Sweat isone. He just got the duy,
you know, and I love thatkid. You got issues with partying,
I think you could get around it. But at the same time, like
(33:59):
if you got to She's a partyand then you come to Manhattan and likes
are hitting you up, you knowwhat I mean, Like there's gotta be
some give and take there, like, yeah, you speed, you like
wreck a car or whatever I seewhere you like, that's just kids being
kids, like the head moved, you know. But like, get me
wrong, don't get me wrong.I'm old school. I did believe in
that. I did believe in don'tdon't do the check and past. But
(34:21):
you got to get with the times. Man. Everybody has got something out
there on freaking social media. Yeah, and if you're looking for somebody who
doesn't, that's you know, that'snormally the Giant's way. Anyway, Go
ahead, give me the captain ofthe Senior Bowl, give me the guy
you know. You know that's theGiants way. Some somewhere along the line,
you gotta go get your guy.Yeah, you got to take the
(34:45):
I agree with you, man,it's uh, it's a fine line to
tell. But where there's an intersectionof like quality talent falling into your lap
because they've got some sort of history. I mean, this is the conversation
with neighbors and a doomsday the lastup at the Weeks, you know,
and people. I think it was. I listen to Schmelk's podcast, The
(35:06):
Giants Huddle, and he vetted itout with some folks at LSU and coaches
and whatnot, and he was like, I don't know where those rumors are
coming from, but it's all bullshit. You know. Yeah, he's a
great kid. But then you seelike Rome is like that buttoned up,
you know, proper dude that youknow, no character concerns that we know
(35:27):
about, right, I mean there'salways something, but always nobody's perfect.
Nobody's perfect, Yeah, of course, man, But yeah, it's just
it's crazy how that can hurt somebody'sdraft stocking. With these kids, you're
talking about a lot of money. They get picked, you know, top
five or fifteen. So yeah,I look at it. It boils down
to the Draft Day movie and howmany people came to his birthday party?
(35:50):
How many people like him? That'swhat I would do it. How many
people like him? I still watchthat movie almost every year, even though
it's a technical movie. It's justnot the greatest movie ever, but I
love it. Yeah, so Iknow we're coming up on time here.
One last question for you. Whatdo you think some of the biggest challenges
are for rookies coming into the NewYork Giants, particularly now, regardless of
(36:15):
position. Uh, great question.I think number one is, Uh,
you have to understand that you're you'renot winning straight off the bat. You're
gonna have to have some tough times. That's any team that you go to.
But there's been some turmoil here,There's been some turnover. There's been
(36:37):
to and out for a couple ofyears here. So be ready, you
know, to to bite that bulletright off the bat. Work hard.
You know you're going to be inthe limelight a lot harder than you would
be anywhere else. I mean, other than that, what what what more
(36:58):
do you have to look forward toother than learning from Don't get me wrong,
you know, I think the Giantsare the classiest organization out there.
They treat their players and their players'families second to none. But as a
player coming in here, you aregoing to face the challenges of being on
(37:22):
not such a very good team rightnow. Having a quarterback issue is very
difficult in the one spot that isthe hardest position in all of sports.
So if I'm coming, you know, I mean, Rome kind of answered
it, well, didn't he.He was kind of like dancing around.
(37:43):
Well, I'm sure they'll get someonein there that's gonna throw me the ball,
because they need to throw me theball, you know, I mean,
how else do you answer that?So he's already ready for the questions
when he gets to New York.Other than that, we got extremely high
freaking apartment and no prices, andyou better be ready for that too,
(38:04):
because they're gonna get half their taxestaken out and the salaries are God.
I used to live at the Exchangeapartments in Secaucus before I moved up here.
In a couple of players there.Yeah, No, there's a bunch
of them over there, Yeah forsure. And I mean a lot of
them were over in like West NewYork, Gutenberg and like the towers and
everything. There were a couple ofstrongholds for a number of years with the
(38:27):
players, and I think, yeah, the proximity of the exchange apartments to
the meadowlands and it's not terrible.I mean the prices went up substantially since
I used to live there. Butdefinitely a good spot. Rookies, if
you're listening, we're checking out.Definitely. I mean a lot of players
live in Clifton. You know,we're sitting here talking about New York.
(38:52):
Meanwhile, every yeah, every everysingle place we just mentioned this Jersey.
It's just it's so funny because Ilive in Rockland County right in this spot
in New York that I literally gothrough Jersey sometimes to get to my work
in New York. So it's sucha such a weird area that New York
(39:12):
and New Jersey are, you knowcombined, you know, and then throwing
Connecticut and is tri state just youcould get to three three states jedges going
one road. Yeah. I grewup in Central Jersey around Princeton and it
was like fine line between Philly andNew York. And man, would you
stop it? Man? Why dopeople say that is that South Jersey If
(39:37):
you grew up in Central Jersey,Central Jersey, Jersey is the thing,
man, I don't want to takeany ownership of South Jersey, South Jersey,
Philly, but I get it.Northern New Jersey's its own thing and
that's fine, man. But likeMercer County where I grew up, it
is its own world, you knowwhat I mean? And it is county.
Wait, hold on a second.I just went to h I just
(40:00):
went to a pick a ball tournamentMercer Bucks. Is that what it's called
Mercer something? It was awesome,I know exactly what are You're like,
you're like a stone store away fromPhilly. Yeah, it's like, you
know, forty five minutes or somethinglike that. I grew up around Princeville.
Yeah, different spot. Yeah,no, it's But that's the thing
(40:21):
is it can get confused with beingthat close to Philly. Like there are
parts maybe like southern Mercer County.I wasn't that far south in there,
like there might be I don't knowthe exact jurisdiction of Mercer County and like
thes and stuff, but not alot of people that I grew up with
were Philly fans. And that wasthe thing, Like you are in like
that hodgepodge of Yeah, so alot of I thought it was closer to
(40:44):
Philly because I you know, Isaw a lot of wah wahs, so
I never you know, you know, shut out. I love I know
me too, man, I missit. I missed. It's crazy how
big it's gotten too over the years. Like back in the day, it
was just like a simple thing, and now it's all over the place.
You know, you know you couldget you know, you can get a
(41:05):
full pie at wa wa now reallya full pizza pie. Bro. I
think that they were it was crazythat they innovated the touchscreen ordering system so
early on, man, so earlyon. I mean, nobody had that
going on. You walked into wahwah and it was taken care of.
This podcast has turned into I loveit, I know, I know,
(41:28):
but Jersey for you. But Joeappreciate you making the time. Pal really
in honor to have you on theshow. You know, I know,
we we got a cool story too. We should talk about it real quick.
We were talking about it before wehopped on and an honor at davet
since this was his show. OriginallyI was explaining to Joe about Dave team,
(41:52):
my relationship Dave Tea in the podcastand everything like that and anecdotally that
dave T had shared with me onetime that he actually gave Roger Goodell his
start in the league. Roger wasan intern for dave T way way back
in the day. And Joe hada pretty cool story himself that I think
you should share with the listeners becauseit's just crazy overlap with this show.
(42:15):
Yeah, if if you know, obviously you gave a lot of kudos to
dave T during your course of thepodcast, his podcast whatever, and I'm
sure you talk about him often. And this is my first time, a
first time er here, So whenyou were telling me that story, I
brought back up just a lot ofmemories because when I was about I was
(42:37):
an autograph collector when I was ayoung kid, and I wanted to get
some Hall of Fame NFL players, and I used to collect the sports illustraight
aids and newspaper clippings and game daysand pros. And he used to cut
out players and put him in aManilla envelope and with a self addressed stay
up manilla envelope, put it alltogether, and I used to send it
(42:59):
out today, this guy in theNFL, and you know, I knew
him of him, and I sentit to him. And when I tell
you, I sent him envelopes,I sent him ten a week for like
years, and this guy used tosend him out to all these players for
me because obviously it wasn't gonna giveme the address. And weeks later I
(43:21):
would get back my pictures in myself addressed stamp envelope, and years later
I found out that it was RogerGoodell. And it's just such a great
story to tell to you because youknew his boss. And that's the podcast
that I'm on right now and thebest part about this story. And I
(43:43):
can't wait to see Roger at thedraft because I'm gonna let him know about
dave T's podcast with you. Andyears later, the Giants were playing Miami
in London and I ran into RogerGoodell on the flight and I was able,
and I don't you know, I'min my forties and I'm with Roger
Goodell. The last time I spoketo him, you know, at least
(44:04):
about this, he was an intern. So I went by his seat and
I let him know the story, and he was so touched that I recognized
the work that he did, eventhough it was just sending out, you
know, envelopes. But I rememberhim getting another NFL person on the plane
(44:27):
later. Come here, come here, Come here, What is it,
Joe again? Tell him that story, you know so, because as Roger
Goodell said it, he goes.Everybody just thinks I became just the commissioner,
and I didn't. I worked likeeverybody else. And so I love
the story. I'm so glad Igot to tell it, especially to someone
that actually knew his boss at thetime. Yeah. No, it was
(44:50):
the same thing with me and davet Man. Dave T was way too
big for me, but took thetime to answer my emails and talk to
me every stink year, busiest timeof year too. You know. So
these guys selflessly give and it normallygoes unnoticed. So for all the good
Dell haters out there, everybody alwaysrasing Roger, there is some good in
the dude. Give the guy ashot. He's not as bad as a
(45:14):
thing. I mean, I mean, I I it's so funny because now
that I'm older, I would havebeen like, the Hell's wrong with this
kid? He's sending me like onehundred hovelopes a week. Get out of
here, kid, Not one time, did he say no, not one
time? Yeah? Right. Youthink at some point he's like, all
right, I've done enough for you, like cut the ship. We're good
here, Like I've already sent youone hundred people back. You know.
(45:37):
You know what, I'm sure mydad was waiting for the return to sender,
but we never got it. Youknow, that's just it's just a
great story and that and and tomeet you on here, and that's the
first thing we talked about before wegot live. Uh, you know,
just set the tones. I appreciateit. I appreciate you having me on
it was it was. It wasvery cool. And you know, we
(45:58):
should do it again after a draftso we could see how we stacked up
with with what we did before.I'm down. If you're down, baby,
it's it's all love. Really appreciateyou taking the time. And yeah,
super cool story. So I'm gladthat we were able to share it
because we're doing this for Dati atthe end of the day, so being
able to share anecdotes about him andRoger and all that is what it's all
(46:21):
about. So again, Joe,really appreciate you taking the time. Look
forward to having you back appreciate allthe listeners giving us the time here today,
and we'll look forward to having youguys back on the next Scouts on our podcast
