Welcome do the Screen The Screen orCollege Basketball podcast with your hosts, Mike
Randall and Gus Kerns. Welcome inlisteners to the Screen the Screen or College
Basketball podcast where we're always talking everythingcollege hoops. You could have been anywhere
else in the dial, but youchose to be here with us Mike and
Gus, and we appreciate that.Mike, we'd have our hands on some
(00:38):
numbers, teams and directional places. That means we have a little bit of
the Top sixteen bracket reveal show tokind of break down for the listeners here
and a couple of other unbelievable eventsthat took place this weekend in college basketball.
Mike, what would you like togo first? And what are we
going to attack first? Here?Well, that's it. That's why we
(00:59):
have a spec shoal pod for thelisteners tonight on Sunday. There's just a
lot of stuff to talk about.I mean, Gus, we could talk
a lot about Juwan Howard, butwhy don't we start with the Brackett preview
show here which came out on Saturday. Gus and Ivan slept for three days.
We've fired up about this. Themost excited podcasters you will find for
the bracket preview show, Gus veryhappy. I did get fifteen of the
(01:21):
sixteen teams right. My only missand I was happy about this was Providence
in and Houston out. I didn'tthink Houston was going to be in because,
as we discussed on the pod lastweek, they were fourth in the
net. But we learned the netdoesn't matter whatsoever, which is totally fine.
I did get all top seven seedsexcept for Duke, right in time
(01:42):
in there where they're supposed to bein their region. Gust shot out to
you. You were on Duke. You said you thought Duke would get a
two seed. They did, Theyabsolutely did. Kudos to you. Excellent,
excellent choice. And I got topthree in the East right Kansas,
Kentucky Nova. That's gonna be afun bracket if that was real. So
the first thing, number one,you did a great job. I'm just
looking over our notes right here fromthe last podcast when we were trying to
(02:04):
predict this, and you had acouple of these that were spot on.
A Texas tech As a three thatwas right on. We said UCLA would
get it in some fashion there rightthere. I feel like you correctly called
Wisconsin had to be included as well, and then I think the only reason
that you put Houston in was becauseof that net rting. I think that
was like you like defaulted to that. But I think, you know,
(02:25):
as far as the top eight teamsgo, I feel like we I feel
like we just missed one and thatI'm pretty pleased with it. I don't
have any arguments with it. Iwas happily surprised Providence made it. Also
happily surprised that Tennessee was that high, and you know, a little love
for the Big East, but theBig twelve, I mean, they have
(02:46):
to be ecstatic over the results ofthis, especially with Texas being included.
I thought they didn't have a chance, and that was kind of like the
surprise team that was included that Ithink we kind of didn't even mention.
After thought, what do you,I mean, what did you take in?
What were one of the surprises orsome of the things that jumped out
to you right away or something thatyou felt like this might not be right.
(03:07):
Always think, and we've discussed this, go with your gut. My
gut said Tennessee was going to behigh because I looked at the numbers,
and I said, second strength theschedule overall, fifteenth non conference, that's
better than anyone. That's better thanany of these teams five and seven now
against the Quad one and five andoh no bad losses whatsoever. They had
(03:27):
to be in and I just wasa little hesitant to rate them, but
I should not have been. Here'swhat I concluded, so we can remember
for next year. Quad one Quadtwo wins matter, period period. They
matter. They trump the net, they trump BPI, they trump any ranking
you want. They want Quad oneQuad two wins, which I respect.
Also, road wins matter. Youheard on the show they kept referring to
road wins. Wins on the roadthat will certainly matter. The net is
(03:53):
irrelevant, irrelevant in terms of it'sa sorting tool. You can sort of
see where people fall. But Wisconsinwas like eighteen or nineteen, and Houston's
four, Wisconsin's in, Houston's notin, So it really does not matter
to them, and they're gonna gobuy big wins. Providence has had big
wins. They've beat in Texas Tech. They've won some big games and they
won them by close margins. Butthey don't care about that, like some
(04:15):
of the rankings do last thing.I'll note, head to head wins do
matter if there are teams being debatedfor the same spot, So like Baylor
as a five or Kansas as afour. They clearly said Kansas smoked Baylor,
we have to take Kansas. Sounless there's some massive discrepancy, tie
(04:38):
goes to the head to head, which I have no problem with. What
do you think? I have noproblem with either? And I think the
last part that I'll just say Iwas a little surprised with. I think
we also discovered maybe a little bitof the value or maybe lack thereof,
of injury because Houston has sustained massiveinjury, unfortunate injury news and have been
(05:00):
playing two men down, two startersdown, and even with their gaudy record
inside you know, a questionable acthey didn't sneak in even with that high
net number, and I think thatreflected that that might be reflected further as
we see all sixty eight teams, and UCLA obviously was down because they had
(05:20):
lost a couple of games due toCOVID, So I think that is also
part of the weighing scale. Ifif teams do lose a couple of games
like that, will will they bepenalized, and then how does the injury
mid season or you know, maybemoving forward unfortunately, how does that come?
How does that How does that factorinto where you're gonna get slotted or
(05:43):
do you get selected? Yeah,I think the kid with the Houston guys
is they're not coming back, soI think their attitude is well. Ellinois's
early losses don't matter as much becausethey didn't have a full team so much.
Illinois when they had their full team, which was really really good,
top three seed, it's fine.So I think that is the key.
But your right partner injuries do matter. If you lose without your key players,
(06:05):
they're going to devalue it. Andif you win and now you don't
have some of those players, they'realso going to reduce that as well.
So overall, really happy. Ithink we nailed it. I love the
brackets really quick last question then we'llmove on. If you're looking at the
brackets, because what do you thinkis the hardest one? If this was
the tournament right now, do yousee off the top of my head,
(06:29):
I'd be Duke Gonzaga, Duke Illinoisspready rough fun like I would say Arizona
Baylor, Tennessee, Providence. Seemslike that's the South that seemed like the
weakest one. I think Arizona isreally good. They can win national title.
It's not it, so I guessyeah, yeah, absolutely right.
Just looking at the whole group, and I think most would say Kansas,
(06:53):
Kentucky, Villanova. I mean thatin Wisconsin's be four. I mean they're
very life four. They can beatanyone. So do you have a one
that you think is the hardest?I and God, the Midwest is Auburn,
Purdue, Texas Tech. Yeah,I don't even know that. That's
where I was going to go.I was gonna go with the Midwest because
Auburn is going to shoot the threeand defend really well, and they've proven
that they can get to a Finalfour with that style with by the way,
(07:15):
with lesser players, lesser talent, and they have NBA talents all around
the court. Purdue has, youknow, the most electric guy who could
just wreck a game at any pointwith Ivy, they have legit size.
Are their defense inefficiencies something to payattention to? Of course, Then you
flip the coin with Texas Tech,They're going to guard the hell out of
(07:39):
you and then also Ucla, likethey've done it before, they know the
blueprint of how to get to aFinal four. So if I was gonna
lean one way, I think itwould be the Midwest because Purdue is going
to be super efficient offensively, TexasTech can guard to anybody who is going
to stay in any game, Auburncan be anybody anywhere, anytime, and
UCLA has already done it with prettymuch the same and we're not even you
(08:01):
know, Adam Johnson and their fivestar freshmen to last year squad. I
agree. I think I think it'sthe Midwest for all the reasons, what
a job Mark Adams has done. They are paid in the rear. Three
seed would be interesting though. WhatI love about this Gonzaga in the West
and San Francisco no problem. Kentuckyand Nova specifically Nova playing in Philadelphia and
the committee chair said that they wereokay with that because you cannot play four
(08:26):
games in one location, but they'veonly played three, so that was interesting
because that would be what, youknow, all those teams being in the
East is sort of an advantage overKansas, sort of a flip of when
they lost in Kansas City with Iknow that's not their home court, but
still I get a guys, it'sclose with Frank Mason against the Chris bouche
Les Oregon Ducks. And in theSouth, Arizona gets the one seed,
(08:48):
but Baylor playing in Texas is thetwo seeds. So real interesting. Purdue
in Chicago yet auburns the one,Baylor in Texas, yet Arizona is the
one Nova, the three in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Freedom with Kansas and Tucky,
so very very interesting across the board. Gus, did you happen to see
the end of the Michigan Wisconsin gametoday? Yes, unfortunately I did.
(09:13):
I'll just go with my initial reactionright off, being a coach for my
daughter's team, and I'm not comparingmyself to Juwan Howard or Greg Guard at
all. But you are on thesideline setting an example for not only your
players, but also for everybody that'sin the audience. You're setting an example
for the student athletes that are onthe opposing team, and I don't think
(09:37):
in any form that's the example youwant to be setting. If you're gonna
say with your actions that it's okayto lose your cool and get physical on
a handshake line, then it wouldbe more beneficial for you to just go
into the locker room. Sure thescuttle butt bee, I can't believe he
(10:01):
didn't shake hands. Oh myke like, okay, fine, have it be
that instead of this. So Ithink my initial reaction was looking at it
through a coach's eyes and being that'snot the example you want to set anywhere.
Yeah, and I'll say this,I have been a coach, varsity
coach at the high school level. We got our fanny kicked my first year.
(10:22):
I had many people leaving starters inunless I understand this is not even
close to the same thing. Soplease, okay, guys, I've had
this happen. I've handshaken, I'vebeen handshaken with the coach, and I've
said, don't I believe your startersin. Again, what I will say
to you is, if you're goingto press me with your starters, then
bets or you're down twenty. Andthat's what happened is Howard pressed all the
(10:46):
way through guard, through the whiteflag up, put his players in what
about two minutes left, and heregoes Howard press in full court. Now.
His argument after was I'm not pressing, that's just our pressure defense.
Yes, I like oranges, butonly on Tuesday. That makes no sense.
Okay, you're pressing full court manto man. If that's your pressure
defense and you know what you want, you don't do it when they've thrown
it in. They've thrown the towelin. There are other players have come
(11:09):
in Elliston if you want to keepyour starters, and I have no problem
with that, but then you can'tget up mad at Guard because his team
couldn't get the ball over half courtand there was four seconds left, and
he called time out or ten secondswhatever it was. And Guard's rationale was,
my second team is in my thirdteam. Really, they're struggling.
I don't want him to get aten second violation. I want them to
(11:30):
actually get some game time. Sowe called a timeout so that the ten
second clock would reset and they hadchances to get it over. Howard said
to him on the handshake line, because there was something on Twitter where they
had it, don't ever do that. Don't recall that time out to me
again. And then Guard grabbed Howard, which I don't think he should have
done. But he's saying, waita minute, let me tell you why
(11:50):
I did it. Because you leftyour starters in and then it escalated from
there. In Juwan, you can'thit anybody. I think jan my gut
reaction, Gus, when I sawit was five games, I don't know
why I can't give you an answer. Was Howard for five games which would
take him out of the rest ofthe regular season. They are not going
to fire him, guys. Let'sstop with this, Gus, and I
go back to John Cheney yelling atJohn Calipari. I'm going to kill you.
(12:11):
Okay, he's not going to getfired. I don't think he should
be fired, but he does haveto be suspended for all the reasons that
Gus just said. You are settingan example. It's a collegian college student
athletes here. This is not thepros, not that that's even acceptable in
the pros. But I do thinkhe's going to be suspended. I wouldn't
be surprised if it was for therest of the season. And oh,
by the way, fading Michigan,Gus, Like I said, my point
(12:33):
is this, Juwan Howard, MattDaugherty, Penny Hardaway yelling at the yelling
at the press. When players becomecoaches, Remember Daherty had that dust up
on the sideline with a player, like when players become coaches without sometimes this
happens. It just doesn't see itseems to happen when you have players who
(12:54):
become coaches that maybe are taking overa job that's different. Listen, Juwan
Howards an NBA champion, he's beennominal, he's coached in the league.
I get it. But now he'sthe head coach. Last year as a
magic carper ride. This year he'shitting some stress because it's not easy just
to replace John bee Line. It'snot that easy, okay, and Juwan
Howard may go on to be betterthan John bee Line, but right now
he still is just a younger coachhead coach experience. These things tend to
(13:16):
happen. But I agree, Ithink he's going to be suspended. I
wouldn't be surprised the rest of theyear. I think that the suspension is
coming, and I think we couldplay the guessing game. Is it gonna
be three games, five games restof the season, so on it's on.
I would imagine that they might lookat it this way. We're on
the bubble anyway, We're not goingto make the tournament, so why not
(13:41):
just make this an impactful suspension andsay the rest of the season, and
then they will probably opt out ofany n I T invitation that they might
get. And ps they're in decenthands with Martelli, So of course,
yes, yes, right, Soit's not the end of the world,
but it's a terrible, terrible visual. With everything in social media being accessible
(14:07):
by everybody immediately, like, there'sno getting away from this. There's no
talking off of it, there's noexplaining it like that that visual was going
to be there. So I thinkit's gonna be really tough. So I
think some time away. You know, time plus drama usually equals some sort
(14:28):
of comedy. That's the Shakespeare equationthat he followed pretty much all the time.
I'm not saying this is going tobecome something that's funny, but maybe
it loses some of its impact andsome of its sting. I hope they
do play the postseason because I hatehurting the kids, just like I hate
when these conferences Gus they roll outteams started. Yeah, you know,
I don't want to hurt the kids, And like you said, Martelly deserves
(14:48):
a great coach. Yeah, justjuwan you you had a dust up with
Turjon when he was at Maryland andmy correct guess. There was also something
with the Rutgers handshake line, whichI don't think Howard started. I think
that was Ada Kete thing, butthere seems to be a lot of It's
three things, Gus, with Michiganon the handshake line. Three things one
okay, mistake two, pattern three, it's a problem. Okay, we
(15:11):
have a problem on the handshake linewith Michigan. Thank you very much,
Joan, probably see you next year. But Gus, let's get to some
positive news. Yes, you wereon fire, okay. So we had
the little dings with the picks. This ding this time was pretty much just
you dinging all over the place likethe Liberty Bell. Now I'm Philadelphia,
Okay, great call with VCU.I was on Davidson. You're right.
(15:31):
I will tell you, brother,I always don't. I don't feel great
when you're on the opposite side.I feel like and I feel the same
way when you're on the other side. I'm like, oh, geez,
maybe I shouldn't. But like yousaid before, go with your gut.
I don't like it. It makesme feel good. Master Don's destroyed them.
Excellent call by you. I'm takingfive and a half. They had
that covered with two minutes in thegame. Just a great, great job
(15:52):
by you, So kudos to you. I want to read off, like
five things that I noticed from theweekend and then I'll stop and get your
opinion. You can give me therest o, yes, please. Starting
to get worried at Oakland, Gus. We love Oakland. We were positive
on them, and they had thatgame won. I mean they were making
shots. Jamal Kane really looked fantastic. They have now lost back to back
home games to Right State in NorthernKentucky. Not a good look. Eleven
(16:15):
and six. Now in the HorizonLeague, Cleveland State clear of the field
at sixteen and five. Your Mastadon'sfourteen and seven, Northern Kentucky fourteen and
six, here comes Basillian, RightState, and oh, by the way,
there's Oakland trying to hold off YoungstownState. So a little worried about
my grizz with great camping because Ithink they actually could have made a run.
(16:36):
What are your thoughts there? Itotally agree, and I think unfortunately
this has been part of the patternwith Oakland as of late the past couple
of seasons, the past few seasonswhere you look at their roster and you
look at how they have competed earlyin the season, and then it seems
like they just hit a wall andit might be a loss like it was
(16:57):
this past weekend, where you thinkthey might have it wrapped up and then
a stumble here or a maid shotthere, and then boom, they're down
four and end up losing that game. So that's that's I feel like that's
happened to this particular program in thelast couple of years, and it really
just boils down to now, canthey regroup, refocus, and get ready
(17:18):
for the tournament because only one teamis getting in from the horizon, So
if they can just get three straight, yeah, then then we're back on
the Oakland Man wagon. But rightnow, yeah, I think worried is
a good term to attacks with Oaklandand the groups next up. I am
not standing in the way of themuss bus here in Arkansas. I'm a
completely different guy from last year withMusselman. This team is a problem.
They're annoying, they're gritty, theycome back. They have one let's see
(17:42):
three, six, nine, elevenof their last twelve only loss was a
one point loss away at Alabama tenand four. Now in the SEC,
Missouri spanked away, which as weknow, is not easy. Tennessee home,
they win by ten. Here arethey're remaining four games gus for the
muss Bus Florida away, Kentucky home. Popcorn is set for that strong ass
(18:03):
offer home and away at Tennessee.Arkansas got Southeast Conference Auburn twelve and two,
Kentucky eleven and three, Tennessee andArkansas right behind ten and four.
What happened this weekend inside the SECreally opened the door for pretty much everybody.
If Tennessee gets that win over Arkansas, then they're only a game out
in the lost column. As faras that goes, the race at the
(18:26):
top goes, and then you haveKentucky and Auburn kind of battling it out.
But now everybody is within a gameand a half in the lost column.
So it is very live. Andthat game against Florida, after Fort
Florida did to Auburn in this pastweekend, that is now monumental. And
I don't mean to sound, youknow, like cliche your sports shape,
(18:48):
but really each one of these programshas to take each one of these games
one at a time. Because eachone is crucial, and any slip up
anywhere for eat any of those programsthat you just mentioned that are top to
SEC like I think, I thinka title matters like a regular season title
matters. We saw how much itmattered with LSU in Kentucky a couple of
seasons ago. And I think thatit's okay, we're gonna give you permission.
(19:12):
Okay, we screen, the screeneris giving you permission. We're gonna
We're gonna give you permission to putJay d Note on an All America team
somewhere. You have our permission, just like we gave you permission with David
Roddy. You can right next toDavid Roddy's name should be be Note's name.
He's played out of his head andclearly is the best player on the
(19:33):
floor when he was off the floorin that Tennessee game, that's where Arkansas
I've kind of got a little lost. Must put him back in boom.
They pull pull away by almost doubledigits at the end. And I have
to tell you, Jaalen Williams, love him, love his game, great
passing, big man, rebounds theheck out of the ball. And I
mean I think he's taking a chargeright now. Next up, I'm starting
(19:56):
to get worried about Michigan stating isthat we love Toms on the podcast.
We love Michigan State and everything theydo. Gus, they've lost four or
five away at Rutgers, No shame. Everybody loves at Rutgers. Wisconsin home,
eh, Indiana home. They wongreat, Penn State away, Okay,
it's rough Illinois home. The problemis, Gus, it's the turnovers.
The turnovers are happening. They arenot forcing turnovers three hundred and twenty
(20:18):
fifth in the country. So whenyou're giving away a lot of turnovers and
you're not forcing turnovers, that's notfun. And they don't have a go
to player, even the teams thatwere great, going back to Cassius Winston,
going back to Denzel Valentine, goingback to Kaylin Lucas if you will,
They've always had a guy. Theydon't have it, and it's really
concerning. I want it back,Izzo. I want to believe in them.
(20:40):
They had a nice run. Theywere fourteen and two, bang lose
at home to Northwestern, swept byIllinois Ruckers, Wisconsin, Penn State,
Izzo, Michigan State go I thinkChristie, that's the question, like,
is he going to turn into thatgo to player. I think that's that
they were envisioning, but that hasn'tmaterial realized as of yet. And I'm
(21:02):
with you. And by the way, the turnover issue, that's just not
a this yere thing. That's beena last couple of season thing. And
of course we're gonna, you know, default to Zoe and say like,
oh, well, it's he's youknow, one of the greatest coaches that
we have coaching in the game today. So are we really going to think
that his team is a high turnoverteam? But the numbers and you know,
the eye test definitely tell us that. And if you're not going to
(21:26):
have something to make up that makethat up with, whether it be offensive
rebounding, excellent three point shooting,or something of that nature to combat those
turnovers, then yeah, it's aproblem, just like you said, a
problem. The next one. I'lldo a couple in a row here because
I have I do not have muchto say. A Kentucky my lord,
a win without tie tire, wheelertie tie or wheeler, a comeback win.
(21:49):
Kell and Grady one of the fewplayers who have gone from a lower
quote unquote profile score to school toa higher one and has done very very
well. Big shot to my goodness, Loyola Chicago. This is similar to
my Michigan take here, Gus.It's just hard when you lose a great
coach. It's not that the newcoach isn't great, it's just not easy.
(22:10):
I just don't believe you can takesomeone who is built a program like
Porter Mojer has, like John Beelinedid, to a level of success,
pull them out of the program andjust keep winning. I just don't think
that's it's fair to anyone. Idon't care who came in there. There's
gonna be some stumbling blocks. Iwill say this about the Ramblers right now.
They are eleven and four in theMissouri Valley. Right now, Northern
(22:32):
Iowa's twelve and four, so theirhalf game back, I will go out
on a limb right now. Ido not think they're going to win the
tournament. I do not think they'regonna win the Missouri Valley. I just
think there are teams that are different. I think Northern Iowa has to look
Drake's going to be a pain.I just don't see them getting back.
I'm calling it right now. Andfinally Gus for this segment Syracuse over BC,
You're welcome, feel free to goahead, Kentucky loyalas Chicago, Well
(22:56):
you are all over that Syracuse BCgame. That was like an automatic plugs
US thought. I was like, yeah, that sounds just about perfect.
I mean, and as a formeryou know, as an a lum that
that has to sting you to saythat, But it is the truth.
I like that you're going with thetruth. And then I'll go I'll go
backwards and just go loyal to Chicago. I totally agree with you. Here's
what's gonna happen inside the Valley tournament. It's gonna be one of these studs
(23:18):
that gets on a run and they'regonna just wreck the tournament. I don't
know if it's gonna be Mosley.I don't know if it's gonna you know,
and then you know, Prema islike his his Robin. I don't
know if it's gonna be aj Green, and I don't know if maybe it's
gonna be Hemphill. I don't know, but one of those players is just
gonna go, you know, bananas, And that's who's gonna come out of
(23:41):
the Valley this year. Look, coach Valentine is done a great job.
It's so hard following the guy.Porter Moser was the guy. Yeah,
I understand. Their numbers are stillgreat, metrics still like them, But
I agree. I think this yearit's gonna be the stud that goes off
inside the tournament. So it's youknow, who do you like? Do
you like forty point games? Gowith Moseley, you like bombs from three?
(24:04):
Go with Green, you like dunkson your head? Go with him
Hill like any one of those guyscould win the tournament, wreck it.
And then with Kentucky, goodness, gracious, they look like they're one of
the best teams in the country.Yeah, Kentucky was not a top four
seed. When I put that outfolks on Twitter, it was not because
I don't think they are. Ithink Kentucky is absolutely one of the top
three teams in the country, andI think they can absolutely win the tournament.
(24:25):
I just didn't think they would beseated at the top line. They
answer to your question, Gus spoileralert for four form doing a bevy of
competish tournment previews, one of whichwill be the Missouri Valley. The answer
for me is going to be ajgreen in northern Iowa. Great job by
coach Jacobson there, that's just myopinion. Last few I'll throw at you
and then we'll get to the preview. Yeah, let's do it. I
think Flord's day is dead to me. I just I get it. You
know, Letter Hal with an amazingcoach, Hall of famer, whole thing.
(24:48):
I just don't think they have itthis year. There's just too much
up and down, injuries, thewhole thing. Vermont back to covering like
an animal, thank you very much. They are, Gus. They aren't
just covering nine ten, which they'recomfortably covered. Yes, they're getting up
twenty to eight and then not lookingback. That's a comfortable cover, which
is the ultimate in gambling. Detroit, watch out, folks, Here comes
Antoine Davis. It's a problem todaythey were getting one against Wright State.
(25:11):
Mother of God game from Antoine Davishere he can carry them absolutely to the
NCAA tournament. And finally, Gus, watch this whole thing, miss Randall.
What a win by Providence. Idon't want to stop with the shot
quality site where you say like andhow Providence should have lost. My guys,
they win close games. It's askill. Let me guess. Doyle
Brunson's always lucky in cards too.No, because they're good. No Al
(25:36):
Durham tonight. Every team is likea Jenga puzzle. Here comes buying them
Reeves. Who's got to get theball more? Horkler's got the haircut,
He's banging threes. Big win atButler. Teams usually don't win at Butler.
I'm Villanova, folks. It wasa great win by Providence that is
still alive for a regular season BigEast title. Those are my games,
Gus. I think you have nailedone of the thoughts that we've talked about
(26:00):
on the show a numerous times isthat the reason the reason our sport is
fantastic, great, unique, special, and will never be duplicated is because
of these opportunities that exist in eachpart of the season for each one of
these teams. You started with aFlorida state, you know, in one
of the most prestigious conferences in America, the ACC. Okay, so they're
(26:22):
so they're out there. Their opportunitynow is going to exist in the conference
tournament. Do they have a talentto do something there? Yeah, of
course, But right now they donot look good. Vermont. Ryan Davis
only played eighteen minutes and he hadeighteen points. Yep, like he is
definitely because it was back. Itwas lower back injuries, which I can
relate to okay, so yes, that's what it was. But it looks
(26:44):
like he's doing okay. Yeah,it seems like they're doing okay. And
then Vermont again, they're treating thisregular season like it is their entire season
and they're just running rough shot throughthe America East. You mentioned Detroit,
Detroit obviously that you look at theirrecord, they're winning, lost record,
they're saying, oh g's but guesswhat they're getting right just at the right
time. And Davis is one ofthose players who can fall into that category
(27:07):
with AJ Green or mostly where hecan just wreck a game. I've had
my daughter watch his free throw followthrough because he is such a great shooter.
And then Providence, the reason thatthey keep score is to see who
wins and advances. Like it's notthe shot quality or the luck metric.
(27:29):
Like Providence wins games. So whenthey get into you know, the biggest
tournament and they get into a closefirst round game in March where they're favored
and that they get a feisty teamon the other end of the bracket.
Guess what they've seen that done thatbefore. So I think that the season
providing all those opportunities for these differentteams, it makes our sport unbelievably unique,
(27:52):
totally a great partner. And let'sdo a little preview of the next
couple of days for the folks here, all right, So I would I
wouldn't mind that at all. Thatsounds great. I think I'm Monday the
two games I'm gonna be paying attentionto. I have New Mexico State and
Seattle on my radar because those arethe two best teams in conference. Seattle
off to an unbelievable start and NewMexico State is usually the flag holder for
(28:18):
this particular conference. And then wehave Indiana and the Ohio State. Will
Indiana get another one of these gameswhere they get back in the conversation for
the bubble. Will Ohio State holdoff Indiana and then be a little annoyed
that they weren't included in that topsixteen preview show. So you have a
couple of different dynamics working there. So those are the two games I'm looking
at on Monday, Mike, whatany other games that we need to pay
(28:38):
attention to or a feel on oneof those games. No, I love
the Seattle game. I think it'ssuch an underrated game by the RedHawks.
The RedHawks Chris Victor has done anamazing job. It's the defense with Seattle.
They are number one in the whackin interior two point defense forty three
point six. And they make theirfree throws and they don't turn the ball
over. New Mexico State like toget after you. They're active all over
(29:00):
the place. They're great on theboards. These two teams met in New
Mexico, New Mexico one seventy ninesixty four. I'm going with the zig
zag theory. It worked well todaywith Detroit. I'm going to take Seattle
here at home to score the upset. Still love in Mexico State. You
know coach jan zaggies everything. I'mall into there. They're wonderful. I
remember watching them against Utah State earlierthis year. They sort of fell by
the wayside, but they did beatDavidson. They did beat a good utepe
(29:22):
team, Gus that has made mea lot of money recently. Joe Golding
coming over from Ablen Christian. Thankyou remember if Shaka last year, which
I call it. Yes, they'vedone a really good job, so some
nice wins here. I'm completely intothat game. As far as Ohio State
Indiana, I have absolutely no clue. My gut leans Ohio State. I
love Indiana, but I think OhioState needs a win in the worst way.
Chris Holtman at home. EJ.Liddell is massively underrated. I don't
(29:45):
have a big lean on this game. You probably have better field than I
do. But I do like Seattleon the first one. I like Seattle
on the first one as well.I know New Mexico State does have scores,
that's what they always have. ButI love you know, Tramell,
Dyson and Griggs beat in the guardpositions for Seattle. I think all of
them have been playing really well, and I think that they're gonna hit some
threes. I know they're a middleof the road three point shooting team.
(30:07):
As far as team percentages go aroundlike thirty four, thirty five percent,
I think they're gonna nail some threesat home friendly Confines and then over to
Indiana and Ohio State. Yeah,I can't wait to watch Trey Jackson,
Davis and Ladell go at it.Yeah, it's gonna be awesome. Like
if nothing else, like that mightjust help decide like who's on what team
(30:30):
for All America or you know wherethose where those two players fall in the
player of the year not only inconference but also national Player of the Year
standings and pecking orders. So Ithink for nothing else, you're just looking
at those two and seeing, like, let's see how these guys match up
against one another. Let's say Tuesday, Mike, Tuesday, we got Nova
and Yukon. It feels like areal Big East game. That's what that
(30:51):
feels like. And then we haveArkansas and Florida that you mentioned before.
I'm gonna keep it on on Oklahomaat Texas Tech, and of course we're
always gonna pay attention out West.San Diego State is going to visit Boise
take the under in that game,Mike. Out of those four games,
do you have something that you're lookingat, something that you're gonna pay attention
to, or if maybe something thelisteners can key in on on one of
those games, whether it be NovaYukon in the Big East SEC with Arkansas
(31:15):
and Florida, Oklahoma, Texas Techor in the Mountain West with San Diego
State in Boise, Sonoga. Hasbeen tremendous for Connecticut, but this really
feels like a Villanova game. I'mnot gonna go against Jay Wright and the
crew winning five in a row whenthey know that the Providence game is on
the horizon. If Villanova does notwin this game, I believe Providence has
(31:36):
the Big East because unless Providence losesout, they would have a two game
lead in the loss going into thegame on Tuesday, March first against the
Wildcats, and I think they wouldhave it. So I don't think Nova
gets tripped up here. I thinkthat was a big, big win for
them. That one is fine. The next one Florida Arkansas. Look,
I love Florida. Right now KenPom has it is Arkansas minus one.
(31:57):
They also right now Ken Palm asa Connecticut minus one for the Villinova game.
Arkansas on the road minus one againstFlorida. I hope Florida wins this
game. I hope I'm wrong.I am not tep betting against Arkansas right
now. I'm not doing it.Big big, big win by Florida at
home over Auburn. They needed that. They got back to the Mendoza line
five hundred in the SEC. ButI think Arkansas takes this one. I
(32:19):
am not bid against them. Iwill love to see Flanders Flemming hit a
game winning shot for the Gators here, but I'm sorry, I'm going to
take Arkansas next one. Oklahoma.Texas Tech Porta Mosier has done a really
solid job for this team. Rightnow, it's Texas Tech minus. According
to Ken Palm, he has thisteam competing and it's unfortunate Oklahoma is Elijah
Harkless going to miss the remainder ofthe season with an injury, which is
(32:42):
really a killer. I love whatthey do. I think they compete.
I wouldn't mind if you wanted totake Oklahoma first half, but I'm going
to lay the points with Texas Tech. Just a tough, tough loss for
them. Kudos to Porto Mooser. To get this team to be so competitive
in their first year is really reallydifficult. They've Beaten Listen and I know
a four and ten in conference, but they beat Texas Tech at home by
fifteen, So Texas Tech is gonnawant massive payback in this game. They
(33:06):
beat West Virginia way. They beatIowa State at home. They competed well
against TCU, Kansas Baylor. They'vedone a nice job. But I think
this is big payback for Texas Tech. Zigzag there. If you want San
Diego State at Boise State. Gosh, this is a tough one for me.
It really is this one. Don't. I don't pick on brother,
I'm not gonna make it unless Iknow it. I this one is a
is a coin flip for me rightnow. If you want to see what
(33:28):
Ken Pom has it at, ithas Boise at Home by three. Of
course that's the generic limb boyse atHome by three. Very said, Diega
Stead, I don't I gotta feelfor that one, do you? Yes?
I think that Matt if they containMatt Bradley, who's been great by
the way, he's been outstanding. He's like you could argue he's player of
the year in the conference and we'retalking about a conference with David Roddy and
Graham e K. Yeah, yeah, yeah right. He's been playing it
(33:51):
out of his head. So Ithink if boys can kind of at least
contain him or at least make itdifficult, I think the rest of the
Aztecs are gonna have difficult difficulties scoringagainst that great Boise State defense. And
Boise State is long everywhere, andman, I'm telling you, since that
freshman came into the starting lineup, they have played unbelievably well. I think
that continues here. So I'm gonnaleave Boise State. I would even if
(34:14):
it's minus three, I'd just thinkI would still go Boise State. I'll
go back up. I'll go backup the way Tech. I agree with
you on Texas Tech. I thinkit's Texas Tech big. Oklahoma has played
so valiantly. They played, youknow, Kansas down to a last possession.
You mentioned the other highlights from theirseason, but I think this is
a little too much, especially withoutyour lead ball handler and decision maker and
(34:35):
Harkless, who's going to be ashot creator once you Tanner Gross can only
do so much. Love Arkansas hereand Nova and Yukon. I'm gonna go
Nova because I've been waiting to seeColin Glopsy be healthy. He looked very
healthy. You can't guess we replayedat me and Miss Ranald. You can't
come under this screen time. Ihad a teacher I was and the thing
(35:00):
is he didn't have any and theywent screen and roll. I'm sorry with
Reeves and Horcler and what happened issea they got they got jammed up on
the right side of the play right. Reeves comes under what you cannot do?
Okay, you cannot come unto thescreen on congression when he's got a
thirty ball, Okay, you gottacome up to the top of the screen
and Horcler hedge and then he hedgedback and he gets that was it.
I mean, it's fine, It'sthat simple. Kudos to Jay Rif for
(35:20):
identifying the right players to do screena roll and that's why he's a great
coach, absolutely no doubt. AndGus last one, I think there's a
game on Wednesday. We might needto pay attention to this game on Wednesday
looming at Colorado State. We mentionedboth the great Graham e k and David
Roddy. They will be going headto head, their teams will be locking
(35:44):
up. I can't wait for thisgame. I'm already like setting aside time
to make sure we can view thisone. Mike, do you have a
feel is it going to be Cowboys? Is it gonna be Rams? Do
you leave your beloved Rams. Whatwhat say? What's say a mister Mountain.
I can't because I'm just I willadmit it. I cannot look at
(36:04):
this objectively. I am picking ColoradoState right now. Ken Palm has it
at four. It's a lot ofpoints to give Wyoming on the road.
Agreed, Wyoming beat him in overtime. It was a great game.
Ek fouls out on the charge. Then Roddy fouls out on the charge.
Fine, it went to overtime.Eighty four seventy eight Wyoming one. I
am not objective. Do not makethis an official pick, nor go by
me. I am too emotionally invested. Of course, I'm picking Colorado State.
(36:28):
I just can't be rational. Sogus please give the people a rational
breakdown of this game. Okay,so the rational breakdown is this. I
think home court matters an immense amount, especially when you have two great teams
like this. Wyoming has proven thatthey can win anywhere. But I'm going
to tell you that the Ram courtI think that they're annoyed, legitimately annoyed
(36:49):
that they got swept by un LV. I think they're going to come out
and say, yeah, we gotswept by UNLV. Yeah, Okay,
Wyoming, you have a ranked numbernext to your name, guess what We're
gonna come smack you around. AndI think that's exactly what's gonna happen.
So whatever the number is, Ithink maybe you can be comfortable with Colorado
State and that number. And plusthey're probably gonna wear some cool uniform like
(37:13):
I haven't even haven't been wearing likereally cool uniforms and doing so I'm down
with the Rams. I'm on yourbandwagon, even though I am, you
know, a huge Wyoming cowboy.Charlier, Wyoming is amazing. And listen,
the job that Kevin Krueger has doneout in UNLV and his first year
should not go unnoticed. Bryce Hamilton'san NBA player, He's been amazing.
They've won three or four in theMountain West. I will say this partner,
(37:36):
Colorado stay better be careful because youcan't get swept by UNLV and then
stumble against Wyoming and then have afirst round you know, maybe lose to
Boise at home on the last dayof the regular season and losing the semis
in the mount West and still makethe nca Tournament. This team wanted to
be in that loss to Grant Shrefield, that three that knocked him out with
Nevada last year and the last dayof the regular season that cost him.
(37:58):
Folks, they need this game. They need this game in the absolute worst
way. I know Wyoming does alsobecause Wyoming lost in New Mexico away that
one's going to sting a little bit. So if Wyoming wants an out large
birthday, need it also here. But I agree with Gus. I think
Colorado State gets it right. Ithink they're a more veteran team. They
want this tournament. They have themotivation. Whyomi's like the new kid on
the block. They've done an amazingjob mal Donado e K. These guys
(38:19):
are awesome. Jeffrey Drake Jeffers oneof the best shooters in the country.
I just think Colorado State gets ithere. I really do, because I
want to see him in the tournament. But again, I am biased partners,
so that's why we need your breakdown. No problem. I'm happy to
provide the breakdown, and I'm I'mextremely pleased to operate within your bias of
the RAMS. That's fantastic, listeners. We just want to give you a
thank you, thank you for lettingus keep your company. We hope you
