(00:16):
Welcome do the Screen The Screen orCollege Basketball podcast with your hosts, Mike
Randall and Gus Kerns. Welcome inlisteners to the Screen the Screener College Basketball
Podcast. We're always talking everything collegehoops. Could have been any h else
in the dial. He chose tobe here with us, Mike, Gus.
We appreciate that. Mike. Wehaven't chatted for a tiny bit,

(00:38):
you know, in the same hemisphereor same stratosphere. So, um,
you know what's on your mind? How is March Madness slash April Openings treating
you well? I guess it's timeto stop fading North Carolina. I think
I've read that train. It's almostGus like Felm and Louise. We went

(00:58):
off the cliff. I just Idon't. I have never, ever,
in all our years of watching thetournament, which for me goes back to
eighty five, I have never seena team do a complete one eighty under
a first year coach. People onTwitter brought up Kevin Ollie with Shabaz Napier.

(01:19):
He was not a first year coach. That was twenty fourteen. He
started in twenty twelve. But theywere suspended or whatever. Okay, fine,
yes, doctor Tony, thank you. Doctor Tony brought up when Steve
Steve Fisher replaced the former Michigan guyto start the tournament, right, but

(01:41):
he didn't really coach them the wholeyear, and they had five players,
four of which made the NBA.Maybe Ray Jackson did for a short time.
I don't know this. I've neverseen this. I've never seen it.
I continue to fade them and theycontinue to stick it to me.
And I tweeted Gus after the runto start the second half, I wrote,
how is his team not undefeated?Armando Baycott is a walking fifteen and

(02:07):
fifteen? Okay, Yes, I'mselling him, sure, because he had
twenty one rebounds. Sorry r J. Davis and Cale Love looked like the
best backcourt in the entire country.I have faded Brady Mannig into oblivion and
I'm celebrating hitting his under two anda half three pointers made until he sticks
one one more in about two minutesleft. Okay, and by the way,
I was hoping his feet were onthe sideline. They were not.

(02:27):
With the second one, that wasincredible. I felt like I was going
down. Then Leaky Black is thedefender of the year. They have no
bench. It doesn't matter. Puffthe magic Dragon. Johnson comes in and
banks two free throws. Missus Randallsitting next to me, go, I
think Puff is fine. I reallythink Puff is fine. So anyway,
that is my maya call. ButHubert Davis, first year coach, amazing
job. February sixteenth, they loseto Pittsburgh ten and one. Since then

(02:50):
beating every team, including the eightyfive Bears. Just an amazing job.
I don't I don't understand it.I don't. Well, I like the
symmetry that you had there of goingback to when we first started watching like
these games and this particular event, back to nineteen eighty five, and you
brought it back to the nineteen eightyfive pairs. Well done, well played
as always. You know, hereare Mike takeaways. Number one. Everybody

(03:14):
made a big deal about, Ohwell, North Carolina is not playing with
their traditional two bigs anymore. They'renot going to run their delayed break.
Yeah, Baycott said, I don'tneed two big so I'm just gonna go
get twenty rebounds. Yeah, Gus, and I'll foul them both out like
the old thing was Will bay Coockgetting foul to up No, he's gonna
foul every big up they could broughtAli Juan eighty have three fouls. He

(03:34):
fould everybody up. Watch them oneAnd I think you mentioned puff unbelievably talk
about ready for the moment, right, I mean he had to come in
and play some minutes. He hadan opportunity, nailed the two free throws,
huge, huge, something that youknow, first round pick on the

(03:55):
other side couldn't do. So thatthat speaks volumes right there, and you're
right with Manic, it's it.Yes, he attempted to play you know
what, what are you gonna say, like the top two pick, top
three pick in the upcoming NBA draftin Polo and he kind of pulled it

(04:15):
off a little bit. Yeah,he pulled it off. And you mentioned
the backcourt. I think last seasonRoy Williams was envisioning what is occurring currently.
And obviously they were a year behindschedule or just needed a year to
mature, or needed a year ofcoaching from coach Williams and then another year
of coaching from from coach Davis. And now they're you know again, like

(04:40):
you said, they're playing like oneof the best backcourts in the nation.
If not the and yeah you needthe glue guy you mentioned and identified Leaky
Black appropriately, And not only didhe come in and defend multiple positions,
he came in and banged a couplethrees. Yes, almost reached double digits
of rebounds. He does like allof that little stuff and plays so selflessly

(05:01):
and does not care about his statline whatsoever. I thought of the argument
I had with Tate Frasier when LeakyBlack started the game on fire, I
go, Leakey Blacks can go forthirty nine, because that was my argument.
Fred was offensive Leaky Black. Justto recap North Carolina twenty eighteen twenty
nineteen Gust twenty nine and seven, they were under Old Roy and they are

(05:21):
one seed. They lose to Auburn, Okay, Auburn with the incredible team
that goes to the final four, maybe even won a title had they not
fell Kyle Guy in the corner Finetwenty twenty, COVID year fourteen and nineteen,
bed Year twenty twenty one. Roy'slast year eighteen and eleven, and
Tate tournament loose to Wisconsin first roundas an eight seed in the eight nine

(05:43):
game. But little did I knowthat you were gonna have that. Hubert
Davis is going to come board andturn this whole thing around. They've been
incredible. I don't know, Guswhy they're an underdog. I love what
Kansas has done. I love whatBill self has done. And I did
make a quick comment to you whenwe were previewing the tournament, wouldn't it
be like I just total self towin it this year when no one's giving
him any credit. I get it. I just I made my official pick

(06:06):
for four four and we'll get intoa little bit. I'm done, like,
I don't know why North Carolina willhave done what it did it and
not cover. I don't and Ican't do it. I loved self Kansas.
I have a lot of thoughts onthe game. I think it's gonna
be a great game. Tarial Nation. I was wrong. I didn't think
it was gonna happen. I've neverseen a first year coach do this.

(06:28):
He's doing it. Hubert was theright guy for the job. The team
is fantastic. They're on fire,Baycott, Willis Reid, whatever you want
to call him. Caleb loves gonnahave thirty five with seven threes. I
get it. I'm I'm ready forit, and let's see what happens on
other night. I think Madni's gonnado something else too. It slightly annoy
you. I'm gonna valuate about theunder again of the threes. I don't
care. Hey, listen, he'splayed great, he's played I have nothing

(06:50):
to say. I have nothing tosay. I've been completely rowing handicapping North
Carolina all year. Sometimes that happens, especially when you have in the new
year, first year coach who's goingto change change the apps, the profile,
not only the roster, but alsothe the identity of that team.
And he's done it appropriately and obviouslyunbelievably successfully. And that's you know you

(07:15):
mentioned you mentioned self. And let'sdive into Kansas and Villanova. I kind
of felt like Villanova was going tohave a shot here, and I was
completely wrong on this one. Ireally felt like they were going to hang
around. I thought they might evenhad a chance to win. They have
dealt with that season ending injury withyou know, their point guard last season.
It's not anything they haven't dealt withbefore. But man, if you're

(07:39):
going to run into a performance likeKansas had against Villanova, I don't know
if, like all of their guyswere healthy, and they brought back Chris
Jenkins, like I think that.I think that type of performance it takes
another special performance to overcome. Maybewe saw that with unc and Duke in
the second game. But they justplayed really, really well. They they

(08:00):
shot it over fifty percent from three, they shot it over fifty percent from
the field, They didn't turn theball over, They played together. McCormick
played the game of what do youthink his career? Like he was insane.
So I think if you're a Villanovayou walk away from that being okay.
Our second leading scorer got hurt.We made it to the Final Four

(08:24):
and a successful season, whereas Kansasis like, oh boy, we might
be able to squeak out another onehere. Where'd you go here? With
Villanova in Kansas. I believe inthe butterfly effect. I believe that if
one thing can be different, amillion other things could happen. Justin Moore
is healthy, they win this game. I believe it. I think he
defends better on the arc. Ithink he limits Kansas from going thirteen of

(08:48):
twenty four fifty four percent from threepoint range. Villanova did shoot thirteen of
thirty one that's forty two percent. That's usually good enough to win. They
were eight to ten from the freethrow line. I just think that Kansas
had a night. And even OchaiBogie, who I chided and stuck it
to me here with my under again, he was six to seven gus from

(09:09):
three point range, so he onlyhad three points, not on three pointers.
I think that will regress. Imean, Ochi Bogie could be turning
himself into a top six ish pickif he has a monster Knight and delivers
Kansas a title. That is possible. But I think Villanova played great.
I think Jay Writes an amazing coach. I'd like to thank Jermaine Samuel's for

(09:33):
his under. I thought it wastime to fade him after writing for three
consecutive overs. I'd also like tothank Caleb Daniels for helping me squeak over
Gus the twelve and a half whichbecame fourteen and a half if you got
it later in the week. Hegot thirteen points. Great job by McCormick.
It's his second highest game of hisprobably best game of his career.
Guests highest point total this year, only second game all year that he went

(09:56):
over nineteen points and I just wantto let you know it's over into point.
Total line is ten and a halfof this game, but we can
get that a little bit. Itwas a great game. Kansas was amazing.
Bill self is a very underrated Xand O coach, and this is
from a guy who has trashed him. He's very underrated. This is gonna
be a great game Monday night. It'll be a fantastic game Monday. Now.
I'm looking forward to You want toroll right into that and then make

(10:18):
a couple of predictions here and maybea couple of places you might like to
find some value, whether you haveplayer props or whatever it might be.
But I'm looking I'm looking forward toit as like you know, a quasi
North Carolina fan and excited because Iwasn't excited the last two seasons. There
wasn't a bunch to get behind.I mean, last season was the first

(10:39):
year that Roy Ever got knocked outin the first round. The year before
that we were under five hundred.Ye have the lass at home to Marquet
like that. All of those thingspiled on and nobody saw a run like
this coming. And I think withKansas one of the talking points might be
are they gonna win this thing. And then is the FBI fog that's been

(11:03):
hanging over this program and you knowcoach self for the past couple of years.
Is that going to take effect nextseason? The season after are they
going to be be eligible for thepostseason? Does coach self face some sort
of suspension? So I think thatis also an interesting add some interesting urgency
to Monday night as well. Iwill go this way. I don't see

(11:28):
it's a great point about self andthe suspension. He mentioned it today,
he said, I think it's comingvery soon. That kind of plays into
this as well. North Carolina hadfifty rebounds against you, fifty five zero.
They're right, it's laughable, butthey did giggle. Are going to
rebound against Kansas? YEA several individualthoughts. Number one, I'm going under

(11:52):
and I put this in the fourfour article on David McCormick ten and a
half points. I'm just going toplay the percentages, yep. And if
you look at McCormick, he hasn'thit this in three the last five games.
He hasn't hit it in eight hthirteen games. He said, ten
a lot. He's now going againstShaquille O'Neil on North Carolina and if he

(12:13):
I just think there's going to bea scheme. They're not going to let
him do this. They could evenI can't believe I'm saying this, They
could double McCormick. I mean,it's not out of the round possibility.
I don't think they should, butthey could. But if I saw Baycot
get Mark Williams and THEO John andFeil Trouble, he could get David McCormick
and fell Trouble in two possessions andtwo possessions. So it's only the juice

(12:35):
only minus one oh five. Thejuice is actually stronger to the over at
minus one twenty, so you haveto bet one twenty to one hundred.
If you want the over, youonly have to bet one one hundred and
five to one hundred on the under. So Vegas is saying they think he's
gonna go over, We're gonna gothe opposite and take the under. There
as far as shooting, and againI don't understand Gus why this wasn't talked

(12:56):
about more. R J. Davisis shooting thirty seven point seven percent from
three point range this year. KayleaLove is shooting thirty six point eight and
Manic shooting forty percent. So theyhave Armando Baycot, who arguably, arguably
could be the best player on thecourt it's possible, tomorrow, possible.
And they have three players that shootover thirty seven percent from three point range.

(13:16):
Basically, that's tough to beat broAnd I'm taking the four half.
I can take the four and ahalf. I get it. And what
my reasoning Gus that Duke would winis. I thought they couldn't avoid Baycott
and getting foul trouble, and Ithought they would guard the arc and limit
the threes. Now, I Boncarowas all over Mannic the entire time,

(13:39):
so obviously I was in lock withthat. The difference is Manic can score
over anyone. I didn't know thatpart. So if they beat Duke with
everything Duke had on the line, then I don't see why I can't take
the points here with them. SoI'm going to take McCormick under ten and
a half and I'm going to rollwith guitar heels plus the points. Can

(14:01):
I give your McCormick under a littlea little juice here? Does that sound?
Does that sound okay? Okay?So I'm just gonna go through McCormick's
games. I took a look atthis because I thought you might bring this
up as a talking point. Okay. McCormick opens the year up fifteen points
against Michigan State. Next game, single digits. Next big game that he

(14:24):
has, fourteen points. He followsthat up with one point. Yes,
next big game he had nineteen points. He put up nineteen against West Virginia
the following game six. Next impactfulgame fourteen points against a ranked Iowa State

(14:45):
team. He followed that up withand then got on a decent streak of
just nine points. His next offensiveexplosion quote unquote is nineteen points against West
Virginia. Again, obviously he likedplaying them. He followed it up with
five points. After his twenty twopoint performance against Texas in an overtime win,

(15:05):
he followed it up with nine points. Following his eighteen point game against
Texas Tech, he followed that upwith sixteen points. I'm sorry he followed
it up with just nine points, then finally eighteen points. If he did

(15:28):
have back to back fifteen and twentyfive. So obviously you're trending, but
I'm with you. Like every singlebig game that he's had, He's followed
it up with a single digit performancethe following game, every every game the
season. I wish you had writtenthe article I should have put in the
article that I say submitted earlier today. The brilliant job. The one thing
that worries means he does make hisfree throws, the very good free throw
shooter. Eight or nine against SexasTech, four or six against Providence,

(15:54):
five or six against Nova. Ijust think Baycott is playing that well.
And I think get reeks of ten, reeks of ten to me? Are
you concerned with Bacon's injury or potentialof I you know you have to make
a decision with that, you do. My decision is no, I am

(16:15):
not worried. I have a similarfeeling. No, I'm not worried he
came back and played on it.I know that you know from both of
us having that similar experience where youtweak it, it hurts a ton of
the moment you come back, laceit up tighter, and then the next
day it swells up. I don'tyou know, we're not in the locker
room. You don't know that part. But I'm guessing that like they're gonna
have their crack health staff on thatand then be able to you know,

(16:37):
patch him up. If this wasUS a guard alignment for Kansas, a
five guard team that was going torun up and down the floor, I'd
be a little more concerned. Notagainst McCormick. I think he can stay
with McCormick. Um. I don'tthink he's gonna put ring light foot in.
I'm excited. I'm really excited.I to know me, I get
very upset when there's like an injury. It really ruins it for me.

(16:59):
So when he out, it wasso bummed, even though I had duke,
I'm like, this stinks. Thisgame is epic. It should not
end like this. So when hecame back on the floor, was just
excited because, Yeah, that thatwas a perfect uh. That was like
the perfect part of the last actof that you know, of that performance.
It needed to go that way forit was also it was also perfect
for the North Carolina plus three liveline. But that's not he I'm glad

(17:22):
you jumped on that. You know, when you see the Titanic going down,
Gus, you might as well nothave a deck chair and list look
for the like can you make ashot? My wife's like, wait,
didn't he play at Stepanak, Yes, Son, he did play step Wait,
isn't he you know a projected lotterypick yep? Oh yeah yeah.
She's like, well this other guyplayed a Stepana. Yes. RJ.

(17:44):
Davis is scoring a lot. Ilove that you guys are going back to
the hole because we lived there,so we passed it so many times,
going to Whole Foods and and youknow me, guys, I'm like Stepinac.
That's a great name, ars BITCHIStepanek. Okay. So now,
of course, sitting here there's twoguys from Stepanek. R DAY Davis,
who was west just as all timeleading score and AJ Griffin, who's open
when he goes off the bus,Griffin Kate hit the brother side of a

(18:07):
barn. Davis is lighting me up. It's great, it's great, it's
great. So I have one angle. I think after getting matched up against
Polo, I think Brady Manic isgonna look at Jaalen Win Wilson and be
like, Okay, you're a stepslower, you're a two inches shorter,
and you're not as athletic. Ithink he's gonna look at that matchup and
be like, hmm, yeah,I can do something here with this,

(18:29):
So I kind of like that asan advantageous matchup for the Tar Heels.
Um can I can I throw somebets at you? I'm just curious get
your opinion on this. Yeah, yeah, let's talk it out a little
bit like this. You know,I bet them already. I just want
to see. I took Remy Martinunder eleven and a half. Great call.
I like Remy. I like whathe does. I just think I

(18:51):
don't think North Carolina is gonna letsomebody go off on them as a guard.
I don't mean I don't think they'regonna let Remy go off. Yeah,
and Remy get a little nuts, you know, And I can see
self not trusting him a lot inthis game. You know, I just
abogie under sixteen and a half againat a principle. I'll probably gonna lose
that one, But I was justat a principle. Uh manic under sixteen
and a half again out of principlemore important, Gus, here are just

(19:15):
some that caught my head that Ihave not wagered on yet. Okay,
what do you think Caleb Love's pointtotal is for this game? Over under?
Oh? I would say similar towhat you just mentioned with a Bogie
and and Manic. Now, yeah, seventeen and a half, so it's
even a point higher. Okay,Yeah, he has the highest point total
on this game. The juice gusis to the under, So if you're

(19:37):
gonna try to get the under, you gotta get minus one thirty the overs
minus one oh five. So basicallythey're saying they kind of think he's gonna
be under. But I think it'sinteresting. Cata love highest point total of
any player in this game. Whatdo you think very interesting? I would
take the under on that, butI would think about taking the over on
both Abogi and Manic. I knowyou just mentioned that you liked the under
on both of them. I'm gonnago with your big game, big player

(20:00):
principal. I know that a Bogiehas not really stepped up in these big
game moments. He could he could. Yeah, listen, you said top
six pick. Maybe I'm not willingto go like that high with a Bogie,
but I am saying, like, maybe he sneaks into like if he
has a giant game, maybe hisname gets mentioned at the late the end
of the lottery. Yeah, Imean, let's say it's it's literally like

(20:21):
a million dollars game for him.Yeah, let's say he drops twenty five
and they win the title. Couldit be a top ten pick? I
still think end of the lottery. But I think if he I think if
he bombs it, he's in thetwenties and then you're looking at literally a
difference of a million dollars. Um. I mean mack Lamore and in Wing
seldom made it, so I guesshe gonna make it. Um. Yes,
sorry, Lakey Black over under sixand a half. Guys, you

(20:45):
can get plus odds on six anda half plus one ten. So if
you wag you're one hundred on sixand a half league, you get one
ten back. The under is minusone forty four. No one's taking the
under minus one forty four. No, I mean, yes, six and
a half. It's it's a three, a breakaway lay up, a made
foul shot, and an offensive reboundplus one ten for Leaky Black. Six

(21:07):
and a half. Guys, takea look at it. I think wrote
the script for that, Sharpe.Who do you think de Wan Harris is
gonna go on? Well? Ithink I think he has to go on
love. Yeah, all right,so that just I mean that that could
play into he's been magnificent and againnot just be us because he held Keim
Mugustie scrollers for basically twelve minutes ofthat game, which was an unbelievable defense.
I thought that was deady to fourteenand a half and here comes to

(21:30):
one Harris lockdown. Um, that'spretty much what do you think Jaylen Wilson's
point totals that? I bet he'sat twelve. Yeah, he's a twelve
and a half, but plus oddson the over so Vegas is linked to
the end. That's another interesting one. Always like the Yeah, that is
an interesting one too. I thinkthe I like the manic match up there
because I have a feeling they'll bematched up against one another. One last

(21:52):
question for for me for you,is this where self pulls out one of
the junk defenses or something different.Yes, he does, he and he's
always shocked me out. There wasa regular season game, folks, and
we know our friend John his wifeJill down Tennessee. Listen everyone of our
podcast where I was ripping on selfcoming into the Kentucky and Kentucky. It's
Kentucky and Kentucky and he pulled outthe triangle in two. Yeah, it

(22:15):
was years ago in regular season gameone of Kentucky. I would think he's
got something cooked up here. Ithink he has something cooked up too.
I think the you know, youknow, Raff is gonna be all excited
to call like man to man andhe's gonna have to say like diamond and
one or something, you know, something crazy like that. Yeah, the
coaching advantage goes to self. ButI thought the coaching advantage went to Shashevski.
And I think North Carolina. I'velearned to do this, Gus.

(22:37):
With betting, it's it's a coinflip game. I'm gonna take two points.
If I can't figure it out,why not just take the point.
It's not one, it's four anda half. That's substantial, it's correct.
That's it's when it's over a possessionthat means it matters, So that
that's something to pay attention to.It was an under a possession. If
it's you know, two and ahalf or under, then then you're dealing

(22:57):
with a true coin flip. Butif you can't figure it out and you're
getting some yeah, it's folks,it's a great game. It's been a
great tournament. I understand that someof the games have not been super exciting
lately, but that was an epicbasketball game the other night between Caroline Drew's
epic that gus that sequence like fiveminutes left where like they just kept making

(23:18):
shots. It was it was Iput out as pornography. It was.
It was basically pornographers who were watching. Um. Great job by North Carolina.
We got the Roy Williams Bowl.Who's happier than Roy's coach Bowl teams?
And either self's gonna get his second, in which case, whether he
gets suspended or not, nobody caresme. Two is big. Calipari has
one too. It was big twosanDean Smith got to to it was a

(23:38):
big deal. Or Hubert Davis isgoing to cap the greatest run by a
first year coach in NCA history andsay we lost to Pittsburgh in February sixteenth,
were national champions. And that's thebeauty of the sport. The sport
gives you all these opportunities, asas a team of program, as a
coach to hit the restart button acouple of times during the season, and

(24:00):
North Carolina obviously has taken advantage ofthe restart button for the sixty eight team
tournament that we are enjoying and thrivingand loving, and I'm gonna be a
little sad to see it go.To be honest, Mike, last little
questions. Do you have a favoritegame or a favorite player that you really
enjoyed watching during this particular tournament.Doesn't have to be a bit, you

(24:22):
know, big team, but maybea favorite game or a favorite player or
something that you really got locked intoor something you felt great about, or
just a player you're like, ohwow, I really liked watching this particular
student athlete. What an absolutely fabulousquestion. Gosh, give me a second
here, guy, once you gofirst, because I haven't thought of this.
This is your fabulous, fabulous question. The coach for me, I'll
say the coach right away is tJ. Alslberger, Iowa State. I

(24:45):
mean that turnaround, it's so underthe radar it really shouldn't be. But
just a magnificent coaching job. Hereally did so just to me, Asslberger
coming from UNLV going to Iowa State, taking over the program, having a
style, a style that he stuckto that was successful. Bravo. I

(25:06):
think one of my favorite games wasthat Illinois Chattanooga game. I mean that
Chattanooga led for like thirty seven minutesor maybe even more than that, and
then Illinois pulls that out and thatwas like the you know, the beautiful
like four thirteen upset that you're lookingfor, and everybody like was clamoring for.
I mean, you almost got therewith it. That was one of

(25:27):
my favorite games to watch during thisparticular this particular run. And I think
if I was going to pick aplayer, I think the player I would
pick is, to be honest, the player might be Kevia Lume from Creighton.

(25:52):
He I think he opened a lotof NBA dies in that first game
and then showed he belonged on thecourt with Kansas. You know who's playing
the national championship game. So Ithink he's the one player, you know
that we kind of keyed into viewingthe Big East Tournament, But then he
really showed out in those two particulargames, whether it be for an impactful
play or for an impressive stat line. I would say again a couple of

(26:17):
games that jumped out of me.First of all, I loved watching Miami
versus Auburn one I called it.I called it when the Brackett came out
two. I don't know, maybeit was Jordan Miller. Whoever pulled up
from three? What about ten minutesleft with no one under the basket and
bang of three? Whoever shot that? That reeked to me of the Guinea
Pots game. Remember I touched thisgate. There's a problem. Yeah,

(26:40):
hit it. This is an issue. As soon as Miami hit that game,
I mean I must have hit thelive line. My finger must have
felt it was over. Like it'sjust one of those things you're watching basketball,
you know it's over. I reallyenjoyed that game. I really enjoyed
it. Though I got it wrong. Michigan State Duke. I thought the
Spartans were gonna do it. TysonWalker felt good, made some shots.
Duke just made s great shots atthe end. That was a lot of
