Philip Roth è un autore che è stato capace di inserirsi nel genere del grande romanzo americano per rivoluzionarlo alla radice. Ha rigettato ogni definizione, tanto da ottenere il brutto appellativo di "ebreo che odia se stesso" e, al contempo, è stato in grado di delineare perfettamente molti aspetti della sua contemporaneità come della strana realtà culturale degli emigrati di seconda generazione.
