Speaker 1 (00:01):
Hello, and welcome to the latest episode of Seawan Locals
Bears Insider Podcast. I am Chicago Bears reporter Michael Duojack
here with the Northwest Hero's Joe Aguilar as we break
down what is the end of training camp? We're recording
this on Wednesday morning. Bears have one more practice to
go before they break for the holiday weekend and get
(00:23):
ready for Week one. But yeah, we are. We are
at the end of training camp. We are. We've done it.
We've gone through a lot of highs and lows. We've
got a lot to break down over the past six weeks,
but we are here toward the end of training camp
and we're gonna break down a lot for you guys.
General manager Ryan Poles and Ben Johnson bomet with reporters
(00:45):
on Tuesday. The Bears made their initial fifty three roster
cuts on Tuesday, and I think there's a lot to
talk about, especially I feel like there's a lot of
stuff that we learned over this training camp. I feel
like there's a lot of stuff that we still need
to talk about. So before we get started, if you're
joining us on YouTube, thanks so much for joining us.
Just a quicker mind to like this live stream. If
(01:06):
you like what you hear, it's a good way for
us to grow the brand and continue to grow the
podcast and the live stream and make sure that other
Bears fans are finding us. But Joe, I'm gonna bring
you in here, and we're gonna start things off with
with Ben Johnson and Ryan Poles. They've met with the
media on Tuesday and talked about a lot of different things,
and one of the bigger things I think that we
(01:31):
kind of heard was we've I feel like we have
some open ended stuff and we'll get into the specific stuff.
You know, the Jalen Johnson stuff is a little open
ended here. The left tackle spot is very clearly still
open ended. Six weeks after this thing started, the Zay
Frasier announcement started is a little open ended here as well.
(01:53):
But Joe, do you know, six weeks after training camp started,
do you feel like more comfortable? Do you feel like
you have more questions? Just in general? How do you
feel at this point of things, you know, compared to
six weeks when we were previewing training camp.
Speaker 2 (02:08):
Yeah, I think that's a good question. I think I
feel pretty good. I feel confident in the coaching staff,
is what I feel confident. There's gonna be growing pains.
We've talked a lot about it. Everyone's been talking about
it from not only the quarterback, but defensively too, I mean,
every area of the football team. But it just seems
I've been saying this the last few podcasts, Michael, it
(02:29):
just seems like Ben Jonson is the real deal. And
I guess we kind of assume that he's been the
hottest name, you know, and the potential coaching market the
last two off seasons here before the Beers, you know,
signed him up finally, But I just think I like
what I continue to hear from him. I just I
(02:50):
just think he's consistent with his messaging. I think guys
are responding, and that's what I'm confident about. Personnel wise,
we'll see some interesting decisions, like you alluded to. You know,
there's still some questions that have to be answered here
by week one, but a lot of this stuff, you know,
it's a long season. I mean, we don't we don't
you know, we don't have to have all the answers
(03:11):
by week one. We'd like to know, like now, who's
gonna be the starting left tackle, what's the running back?
Room gonna look like. But you know, the bottom line is,
as we tape here, you know, as we record here,
we're we still almost have two weeks to the to
the start of the regular season. So in that time
it's just another you know, almost two weeks for guys
to get healthy and things that kind of get sorted out.
(03:33):
But I'm sure they have an idea. You know, if
there is play tonight, they know who they're gonna start.
But again, and especially in the NFL today, that really
doesn't matter. You know who starts, you're gonna play anyway.
I mean, so many guys rotate, and I do like
the depth. I think they're finally establishing some depth. I
know we've here, we hear that like every season. Ember
last offseason, Ryan Poles saying it's gonna be tough to
(03:53):
make our roster this year, and you know, you know,
eleven losses later or whatever it was, ten losses later,
we saw that one. So I am encouraged. I think
in general, that's the long answer to your question.
Speaker 1 (04:06):
I would agree. I think you should be encouraged. And
you know, obviously it's still the it's the preseason, it's
the off season, like it's the honeymoon phase still, and
we'll see what things kind of look like, you know,
once the games actually happened, and you know, you're looking
for answers for you know, what's going on what happened
on that play. But I would agree with you that
I think that Ben Johnson has shown you that he's
going to be really attentive to details. He's gonna get
(04:27):
on you, and he's going to coach you up like
he's not going to he's not going to let anything pass.
I thought, you know, we didn't get a chance to
talk about a Friday's game against the Kansas City Chiefs,
but after that game, he was pretty blunt. He said,
like the off I thought that he you know, he
didn't say this is a verbatim, but he essentially said
like he felt like, you know, they were over the
whole pre snap penalties. He thought they were done with
(04:48):
the whole all of those issues and that sort of stuff.
And he's not afraid to say, like, you know, on
that one play that Caleb had where he threw into
double coverage in the end zone, he said, the coverage,
the protection or the cup. You know, I don't know
if I should have made if he should have made
that throw, right, Like when he held on to the
ball for too long on a sack on one of
those drives, the first thing he said was the protection
(05:10):
was good, right, Like, he's not afraid to like go
after not that he's going after Caleb, but he's not
afraid to critique his quarterback in public and say, yeah,
I don't think he should have done that. I don't
think he's you know, he should have done that, And
I think that's fine, right, Like you want Ben Jonson
to coach Caleb both publicly and privately, right Like, I don't.
I don't take too much from it publicly, Like I,
(05:31):
you can do whatever you want publicly, as long as
you're coaching him the right way privately, That's all I
really care about. But I it's very clear I agree
with you that Ben Johnson and his coaching staff is
doing everything the right way up to this point. We'll
see what whether that turns into more wins or you know,
other things, but I would agree that I think this
coaching staff is very detail oriented. They've shown that through
(05:53):
this process, and I think if anything, you've have to
feel at least a little you have to feel encouraged
that this coaching staff is going to get the most
out of this team, and I don't know if we
could say the same, you know about the previous coaching
staff exactly. All right, let's talk about some stuff that
we learned on Tuesday, and we learned a lot. Actually,
one of the bigger things is, you know, one of
the bigger surprises of training camp was Jalen Johnson not
(06:15):
being there right Obviously, at the beginning of camp, both
Ryan Polls and Ben Johnson said it was a leg
injury he suffered away from the team over the summer
and he should be back in a few weeks. They
weren't concerned about it. Then training camp kind of continued
and it went on and Jalen Johnson still wasn't there.
He would appear sometimes, you know, warming up and you know,
(06:36):
doing stuff way before the games, but you never saw
him practice. You never saw him getting back on the field.
And you know, on Tuesday, the Bears officially, you know,
they put him on the active roster. So I think
that's an encouraging spot. They took him out off the
non football injury list and they put him on the
active roster to start the year. So I think that
is an encouraging moment. But you know, listening to both
Ryan Polls and Ben Johnson, I feel like, you know,
(07:00):
I feel like Ben Johnson, with injuries and everything is
everything else, has been pretty upfront, like he'll answer your
question and he'll talk to you about it. But for
some reason, I don't know why, you know, he's kind
of deflecting to Ryan when it comes to Jalen Johnson.
And you know, bet you know, Ryan Polst kind of
said like, there's nothing, We're not hiding anything, like there's
nothing crazy going on here. You just had like an
(07:20):
injury that he suffered and he's still dealing with it.
But I you know, at this point, I mean, I
don't they're still hoping for him to play against the
Vikings and maybe he'll be back on the practice field
next week or even today and he'll be back into it,
but I don't know if that week one is looking
realistic at this point. I mean, he hasn't had a
training camp for six weeks. There. You can't just throw
(07:42):
a guy in there who hasn't been practicing and hasn't
done anything. I you know, this whole Jalen Johnson thing
has been really interesting to me, it's just because you're
missing your best, probably defensive player out there and you
don't really know what's going on at this point.
Speaker 2 (07:56):
Yeah, it's a little disturbing. I mean, I will say this.
I mean, he's a veteran player, and I think he
knows his body. I don't think, you know, a training
camp is as important for him as it would be
for a young guy who's still trying to establish himself.
So yeah, and if it's if it's soft tissue or
something like, let's let it here. There's no need to
try to rush him early. You know, Let's say it
(08:18):
was even last week. He was ready to go, but
you want to be precautionary. He's such a vital piece
to this football team. We've said, like, you know, going
into the season, he's probably your best player. He's certainly
probably the most decorated. You know, he's been to a
couple of Pro Bowls. Now is it tours? It just
should have gone two years ago. I can't remember it.
But we know how good he is as a corner.
He he's an important part and you can't look if
(08:41):
they have to have him out the first four weeks
or longer, and that's that's when I get worried. But
I know they got the vikings and justin Jefferson week one,
that's my concern. Jefferson is battling a hamstring injury too,
so they got to be careful with him. But I'd
rather have him miss the opener and then instead of
being out for you know, rushing him in and then
(09:03):
he's missing you know, multiple weeks after that. So again
I'll give him a little more benefit the doubt being
a veteran player and we know what he can do.
And Corners, I don't know. I maybe you can answer
this better, but to me, Corny, you go, you go
cover the guy. You gotta know what you're doing. He's
a smart guy and he's been around the league for
a long time and he's good at what he does.
(09:23):
So I'm not gonna push the panic button on that
just yet.
Speaker 1 (09:28):
Yeah, I would agree, And like like you mentioned, Ben
Johnson talked about, you know, he's a veteran, obviously he
knows how to get ready for a season, and you
know it's different for him than it would be for
a rookie or anything like that. But you know, obviously
this is this is a new defense. Not to dumb
it down. Obviously it's not as simple as you know
what I'm i about to describe. But Dennis Allen's defense,
(09:49):
and in the secondary spot in Dennis Allen's defense is
you're man the man coverage. You're sticking on your guy.
That's that's pretty much what the defense is, right Like,
sometimes you're gonna do it at line of scrimmage, sometime
you're not. But for the most part, you're sticking on
your man and that you just can't let him get
a pass and can't let him get past you. So
I would agree with you. I think, you know, if
(10:10):
there's a player that you feel comfortable in getting ready
and being ready for the moment despite missing all this time,
I would agree with Jalen Johnson. And who knows, he
could be back to practicing next week. They ramp him
up a little bit. Maybe he doesn't play the entire
game against the seasonal p against the Vikings, and it
turns out to be, you know, maybe he plays fifty
of the fifty percent of the snaps, splits the snaps
(10:31):
with like Nasehan Wright or something like that, and that's
how you kind of work them in. But it's just
been an interesting process. Just the fact that this kind
of came out of nowhere. They didn't really have to
talk about or disclose what the injury is for all
of training camp. It's just been an interesting it's just
been an interesting situation, especially for probably your defense's best player.
Speaker 2 (10:54):
Yeah, I you know, I tell you what I don't
want to see. I think we saw enough of nay
Sean Wright. I know he's been a nice story, made
the team, but you know, the guy's had his chances
in this league. He's this third year in the league.
Now he's been on you know, one or two teams,
so we saw. I know, Patrick Mahomes will make a
lot of you know, corners look bad, but boy, that
(11:14):
was a little disturbing that preseason game. They they picked
on him, and why wouldn't they? And I think I
saw enough of him to know I don't want to
see a lot of him. You know, he's on the
team good, hopefully he's a death beast, but I don't
want to be relying on him for many games.
Speaker 1 (11:36):
I will say I think that probably was his worst performance.
I mean, he was having a great camp. I mean,
I'm not I'm not here to say that Nashan right,
is Jalen Johnson by any means, But I do think
that he probably did get a little exposed. And I
did think that that double penalty was kind of weird,
like it didn't seem like the face mask at the moment,
and then it was just kind of like, Okay, I
feel like we're being a little picky here, but yeah,
(11:57):
he did get exposed. I mean, Patrick mahomes Nos knows
what he has out there, right, he knows what the
defense can do, and he's gonna pick on guys and
that's exactly what he did. So yeah, I agree that
that wasn't a great moment for na Shan. And I
do think listen this this It was one of the
things that Ryan Pols talked about the other on Tuesday,
is listen, like he this defense hasn't really or the
(12:19):
secondary hasn't really played together since the spring, Like Jalen
Johnson's been hurt, Kyler Gordon's been heard, Terrell Smith is
now you know, out for the regular for the regular season.
Like this is a pretty depleted group right now, so
it'll be really interesting to see how they kind of
come back. Kyler Gordon's been back at practice the last
couple of times, he hasn't really done too much team drills.
(12:40):
Nick McCloud has looked pretty good. He's been kind of
a nice little surprise there in that in that, in
that Nickel spot. But yeah, I agree with you. I
think you know nay Shan got exposed and you want
Jalen Johnson back out there as soon as possible. You
don't want him to risk anything. But that's definitely something
a position that we're going to be watching here over
the next couple of weeks just to to see does
(13:00):
Jalen Johnson come back there and what what is the
Bears plan? Are they going to have Nasehon and Tyreek
out there at the same time, what are they going
to do? That'll be an interesting storyline to watch in
the next couple of weeks. Obviously, the biggest thing for
the biggest competition of training camp was the left tackle competition,
and six weeks and we kind of have an answer.
(13:21):
And I think that's kind of like it's kind of interesting,
right because Ben Jonson was asked about this on Tuesday
and he said his first answer to the question was
I'm not ready to talk about starters. And then when
he was asked about, you know, how does he feel
about you know, this not really shaping up maybe the
way he wanted it to. He has said, he said,
(13:42):
like we will have a left tackle starter at week one.
If the competition needs to keep going, we're going to
keep going. So you know, at this point, I think
that it's Braxton Jones is going to be starting in
week one, but I don't I don't think the competition
is over at this point. That's been very clear to
me that, you know, theo Benedict can still make a push.
(14:04):
Karana Magaji Ryan Polls kind of made it clear that
maybe they're going to move him around like he maybe
they will put him at the guard position. Ozzie Trapillo
seems pretty comfortable a to right tackle, so I don't
think the Bears are going to move him. I think
they They said that he went through a rookie wall
halfway through camp and you kind of saw it, like
you kind of saw, you know that welcome to the
(14:24):
NFL moment for him where I was like, man, this
is a lot and I'm trying to do the left
tackle position. Like he's very clearly more comfortable at the
right tackle spot, which who would have thunk that a
guy who played most of his college career and right
tackle would have become more comfortable to right tackle. But
Joe this we kind of have an answer, but we
don't really have an answer here at left tackle, and
I think that's kind of concerning, especially just given you
(14:46):
know how important this position is to you know, making
sure that Caleb can succeed this year.
Speaker 2 (14:51):
Yeah, I mean, I think it's going to be an
upset at this point if Braxton Jones isn't starting Monday
Night in a couple of weeks here against the Vikings.
I mean, if it's THEO Benedict, to me, that means
Braxton Jones isn't isn't healthy enough. But he's played the
last two preseason games correct, so to me three he
started all three, so that's a good sign. And again,
(15:14):
you know, let him heal up if they if it
needs more time to heal. He's still got again, almost
two weeks here to go, so I mean it's really
a two man race at this point, and one guy's
completely unproven, and Benedict maybe he will be the guy
going forward, you know, at some point in the season,
but for right now, it's got to be Braxton Jones,
and to me, that would be a huge upset if
(15:35):
that's not the case. Trpillo's out of the running, so
is aman Gas you know, if you ever was in
it anyway. But like when they said they trying mc guard,
he's gonna a swing guy and still let him get
his you know, feed under him or wherever, trying to
find his spot on this team regardless of the role.
Not that guys don't improve and get stronger and healthy.
(15:56):
And again, no team really ever goes to the season
with no one injured, so he's probably gonna get an opportunity.
I'm in gaji that is at some point, But to me,
it's Braxton Jones. Again, he's not Pena Seul. He's not
going to make any Pro Bowls. But you know what,
if he's healthy, we know what we got. And to me,
the big thing on the offensive line. I know it's
left tackle, it's the most important position on the old line,
(16:17):
but you solidify the interior of the line with the
three new additions. To me, that's the big thing. And
as long as they're healthy, I feel a lot better.
And I will say, even when you know Joe Tooney,
did he play it all in the preseason. He played
all them against the Chiefs.
Speaker 1 (16:32):
Tuny, No, he didn't play, but I'm.
Speaker 2 (16:34):
He's not worried about him right So, but I will
see the offensive line has looked better. I'm not so
sure much about past protection. That's been pretty decent. And
you get some times you know you're playing second stringers.
You don't really know what you're seeing. I just need
a push up front when they run the football, and
we can talk about that. I'm sure we will here
about the running back situation. But at least I see
(16:54):
a push more where when by the time the running back,
no matter who it's been in the backfield, gets to football,
guys aren't being pushed back already. And where they're three,
you know they're they're a yard back of the line
of scrimmage as the receiver, as the running back rather
receives the football. So I've been encouraged by that. I
think that will continue, especially with that those three guys inside.
And we know what Darnell Wright is. He's a good
(17:16):
football player if he's healthy. I'm not worried about right
tackle the left tackle. I do think it's going to
be ongoing. It's practiced to me, it's Braxton Jones' job,
and if he really starts to stink, they're not going
to tolerate it, and they'll say, you know, theil Bennett,
get ready because you're going in on the next series.
Speaker 1 (17:33):
Uh Sports Chicago Styles joining us. He had a comment
saying left tackle is the biggest question mark on the
offensive line. Sure Braxton will start, but the ceiling isn't
high enough to me for a second contract. And I
think that's the biggest question, right, Like you not only
did you want to see if Braxton is going to
be you know, uh healthy enough to even play this year,
(17:54):
but this is a contract year for him and he's
got a lot to prove, and I guess the biggest
question is did you get as much such as you
can out of a fifth round pick out of South Utah? Right?
And that's not to diminish anything, obviously, I know, you know,
I'm not trying to diminish what Braxton has done up
to this point and how well he's played at times,
and he's obviously been graded well by Pro Football Focus
in other places like that. But he asked a good
(18:16):
question where it's like should you have dressed? Should you
have addressed this issue more than you did. And whether
it's the draft, whether it's trades, whether it's free agency.
Like I think Colston Lovelin is going to be a
great player, He's going to be a great tight end.
He's he might be a steal honestly in the first round.
But is that a spot where you should have traded
(18:37):
up a spot or two and drafted you know, Calvin
Banks drafted a left tackle, Like, It'll be interesting to
see because you go into a situation now where if
you don't see a lot of great stuff from Braxton
and THEO plays okay, if he gets an opportunity of
that kind of stuff, are you paying Braxton Jones? Like,
I think you're in an interesting position, and then what
(18:59):
are you doing next year? I think it's really hard
to find left tackles and that's really been a clear
thing because they're pretty much gold in this league, right Like,
you're not gonna be able to trade for them. You're
not gonna be able to sign them in a free
agency unless they really don't want to be where they're playing.
You essentially have to draft them if you want to
find your starting left tackle. And I think right now
(19:20):
you're kind of looking at the whole situation and you're
kind of wondering, was enough done this year to kind of,
you know, work on that position. I agreed. I think
the interior of the offensive line looks great. I think
a lot of work was done there and I think
that's gonna be a huge improvement. But could more have
been done at the left tackle spot? Or is it
hard to switch out four out of five positions?
Speaker 2 (19:41):
Well, a few things here, just revisiting the draft again,
I don't know if the guys that were picked, including
Will Campbell, I had, Colston Lovelin, were good enough in
their eyes, maybe a lot of people's eyes to trade up.
I don't know if that was going to cost you,
you know, a couple bots, maybe even one to draft
(20:03):
on those guys. To me, if if there's been an
egregious mistake, there's been a misstep here. It was in
the second round. And Luther Burden, look, he looks like
the real deal, from from blocking to catching to making
plays after the catch. He's got the whole swagger going.
He could be a really good football player. But that
second round you still had and and who knows again
(20:25):
where we haven't even played a regular season game yet.
But then ariante ursery kid out of out of Minnesota,
was there. There were a lot of people who thought
he'd be a great pick in the second round, that
they could have grabbed him. And now I guess again
it's preseason. But he's pleased he's with the Texans. I
believe he's looked good there.
Speaker 1 (20:42):
Ye.
Speaker 2 (20:43):
And if you misstepped on Trapello thinking he can be
your left tackle when he's not going to be it,
that's bad. I mean, that's that's Ryan Poles messing up
the offensive line again, because that's that was a key
pick there. And if he can't play left tackle, maybe
he still needs more time. But like I said, why
is it getting reps? Boy?
Speaker 1 (21:03):
Boy?
Speaker 2 (21:03):
Now you've got two right tackles. We talked about it
last week, Michael, that looks really bad, really bad. And
when you when you had an opportunity, even Josh Simmons,
who I know what, late first round the Kansas City
with your pick, maybe you could have packaged some picks
and move up to that spot to get him because
he wasn't gonna be picked we knew likely in the
(21:24):
top fifteen. So that's what I look at more instead,
of like, well, they were at ten, they could have
moved maybe moved up. Maybe if Banks was there when
they picked, maybe that would have been the pick. But boy,
I'm more ticked off. Why am I getting ticked off?
Nothing's even happened yet. This is just the cynical Bears
fan in me, the jaded Bears fan in me, looking
(21:45):
at what could have been the second round and Shamer
Turner got another second round pick. What's he done? Is
he gonna play it all? Or is this gonna be
another you know, uh, you know, like in a you know,
a red shirt so to speak, year for him here
and in year one, because that's another second round pick
and you need those guys to contribute. And again, I'm
probably getting angry over things I shouldn't be getting angry over.
(22:08):
Yet maybe I'll never have to.
Speaker 1 (22:10):
Isn't that a sports fan in this show? Isn't that
pretty much the whole point of this thing? But yeah,
I agree with you, they could I agree, I think
you could have handled a little bit different. I think
the second round it became very clear that they wanted
to get a running back. The running backs got the
top running backs that they wanted were gone. And then
they're like, Okay, we missed out by a couple of spots.
(22:31):
Let's straight down and let's get Luther Burnon and let's
kind of get out of here. But yeah, we'll see.
Who knows, maybe Braxton will be a dependable guy and
he'll look a little bit better. Maybe it's gonna look better,
Like I I think he's gotten bull rushed a couple
of times. I think there are a couple of times
where he's been overmatched, But at the same time, like
he's still coming back from injury, do you kind of
(22:51):
give him the benefit of the doubt at this point.
I don't know. It's just it's been interesting that, you know,
Ben Johnson hasn't held back. He has said that this
isn't what he was and hoping for at this point,
and I don't think it's what Bears fans were hoping
for at this point. So we'll look at what's happening
here in the next couple of weeks and see. But
I think Braxton Jones starts with the job on in
(23:11):
week one against the Vikings, but no one can really
guarantee what it's going to look like, especially by that
bye week, So that'll be something we definitely look for
moving forward some other housekeeping stuff before we get to
the fifty three man roster. Ryan Pole's addressed is a
Fraser situation. Obviously, he's a Fraser fifth round cornerback. Was
drafted this year out of UTSA. I think the last
(23:35):
time we officially saw him was at rookie mini camp
at the beginning of May, if I remember correctly, we
were looking back and I think that was it. He
has not practiced all of training camp for a personal reason.
He's been seen around the facilities just you know, kind
of being taken here and there by a golf cart.
But Ryan Poles addressed the situation, said he's going to
(23:56):
be out for the entire year after missing cap. He's
going to be part of meetings, he's gonna be in
the weight room, he's going to be doing stuff he pulls.
Ryan still describe the situation as a personal matter. Apparently
this is something that happened before the Bears drafted him,
but they didn't know about it. But now they're kind
of handling the situation and helping him and you know,
(24:18):
helping him get through this. But again, you know, I
know it's a fifth round pick, it's not you know,
one of your topics, but a really interesting situation. And obviously,
you know you wish the best for Jay. You don't want,
you know, whatever he's going through right now, you don't.
You wish the best for him, and you hope everything
is going well. But again that's you know, that's someone
that you kind of hoped for in your secondary that
(24:39):
can be a depth piece, especially now you need that
and you don't have that right now. And I'm not
blaming Zay obviously for not being available, but is this
something that the Bear should have known beforehand? Is this
something that you do research beforehand? It's it's it's just interesting.
It's a it's a tough situation for everybody. Obviously you
wish the best for the kid, but it's just an
(25:00):
interesting situation at this point that you know he's not
going to be playing this year.
Speaker 2 (25:04):
Yeah, it's really disappointing to me. I mean, and look,
fifth round picks. You know, you're you're not looking to find,
you know, future Hall of famers in the fifth round,
but it's still a guy. You you got to start
hitting on some of those. And Ryan Pols has had
too many misses here in his in his little three year,
ten year or whatever it been. It's been drafting, so.
Speaker 1 (25:25):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (25:25):
Again, you hope the best for for Ze Fraser, you know,
tall corner. I was really excited to see what he
could bring, uh for them, especially with with in Dennis
Allen's offense. But but Mike, I think the kid, he's
not like a kid so to speak. I think he's
like twenty four. He's gonna be twenty five next year.
I mean he you know, so now he's lost a
(25:46):
year and now and then you compounded with Terrell Smith's
season ending injury. Uh, Jalen, Let's hope he's you know,
he can play seventeen games, but all of a sudden
your secondary again. But every team will say this, right,
We've talked about it before. If you have you have
ten good corners, a ten ten secondary guys, you don't
(26:07):
have enough at such a position of attrition, and you
use them a lot more with nickel packages and stuff
back in the old you know, compared to the old age,
just played two corners in the two safeties. So but
but this corner, this secondary room, and even once your
kwon Brister Brisker, I've said it, you know, going back
to you know, the spring about you know, the concussion
issues he's had. Can you count on him for seventeen
(26:29):
games because he's really huge for this defense, for him
to to to stay on the field, because he's a
good football player. But this a Fraser thing, and you know,
we're all curious. I mean, you think, is it something medical,
is it's something legal. We don't know extent of our business,
I get it, but the sports fans, we're curious and
if this is a wasted pick, with all due respect
(26:52):
to say and again we hope the kid as well.
But boy, that's that's that's that's another that's another miss.
And should they have known? You wonder? I know some time.
I mean, you're not going to hit on everyone. I
can't imagine what it is like, you know, scouting people,
all the work that's got to be done with not
only skills and what they're forty is and how much
(27:12):
they bench pressed, but everything out of their personal lives medical.
I'm sure it's very difficult, and you're scouting as many
players as these guys have to scout. But yeah, I
thought that was a big, big disappointment, just the news
itself that he's going to be gone all year because
I thought at some point did get him back and
they get him up to speed and maybe mid season
(27:32):
he's contributing, whether it's on special teams or you know,
on downs.
Speaker 1 (27:37):
Yeah, I would agree, And obviously it's a yeah, I agree.
It's hard, like there are so many kids out there.
You're not going to know everyone's full background, what's going
on in their lives like that. That's just impossible. But
it's Yeah, it's a tough pick, and I agree with you.
You're starting to kind of look at you're getting more
of a resume with Ryan Polls, and this kind of
goes into the fifty three personnel. Now at the initial
(27:59):
roster that we're talking about, but there are some hits
and miss and you're gonna have hits or missus. You're
not gonna hit on every single pick you make. But
there are a lot of interesting things and a lot
of you know, a lot even this class, you're kind
of wondering about some of the decisions already in training camp.
What is it going to look like moving forward? And
it's obviously something we'll look forward to in the in
(28:20):
the near future. Here, all right, let's talk about this
initial roster here, Joe, I don't think there was any
true surprise here. Let's take a moment. CM started the
podcast saying, can we you all please join me in
a moment of silence for the part of Tyler Scott. Unfortunately,
I would agree. I think we kind of saw this
(28:43):
one coming. I mean this, this wide receiver room is
very deep at this point. It's got a lot of
talent and and I think, you know, if you wanted
to call a surprise or not, I think Johnny Walker,
you know who got that final the number six spot
in the wide receiver room. I think he earned it right.
Like you saw him play, like he he made the
most of his time when he was on the field.
(29:04):
He looked good in practice. You saw obviously what he
did with that game winning play on that drive against
the Kansas City Chiefs. I mean that, and Ryan Puls
talked about it like we're gonna look at competition and
production and now where you were drafted. And that's something
that I kind of am glad that they did, because listen,
Johnny Walker, like he showed that he deserved to be
(29:25):
on this team, Like he took it the most of
his opportunities, and he can be a playmaker for you.
If he's you know, if he's going to be a
part of your team this year.
Speaker 2 (29:33):
Well, I'll tell you what. First of all, it was,
he's a great story Johnny Walker. That catch we saw
on the sideline on that game winning drive, I don't
care if that was a preseason game, that's probably gonna
be one of the better catches we see all year
from any receiver. I mean, that was as good as
it gets. The kids got good size, so he's like
six he's like six', three he runs. WELL i don't
(29:56):
know what the knock on him going into the draft,
was BUT i, mean he's done everything you could ask
for and he basically won that. Spot he earned that.
Spot AND i gotta tell, You, MICHAEL i don't Like
i'm not into hyperbole and all, that But i've been
A bears, fan but Watching bears football for like close
to fifty. YEARS i KNOW i only look, fifty But
i'm not gonna go. There but this might be the
(30:18):
most Depth i've ever seen that wide receiver for A bears.
Team this looks like a really legit how many years
forever we've been saying they haven't got enough, receivers they
don't got enough receivers and not any good. Ones but
that group With Dj, Moore Roma Doonza Oli media is a.
CASE i didn't know he was that, good but he's
(30:38):
really proven. Himself Burden duvernet's got a role on this
team and he's proven himself as as a good return
at a good you, know a depth piece at wide.
Receiver and Now Johnny, walker who looks really good and
he earns the spot will probably be an active week
one because you, know you can't play, everybody, sure but,
NO i really like the depth at wide receiver they.
(30:59):
Have But i'm so happy for that kid and that
dance he did after the. TOUCHDOWN i, mean come.
Speaker 1 (31:04):
On he's definitely he's been doing that one a couple
of times.
Speaker 2 (31:08):
Now, yeah that was so, fun really a feel good
story and hopefully gets an opportunity at some. Point maybe
you don't want him get an opportunity at some point
because that means someone went out with an injury or.
Something but you know my, point it's really happy for
that young.
Speaker 1 (31:25):
Man, yeah AND i would agree with, YOU i, think,
uh you, know even Add Cole comet And Colston, loveland
like The tigers are endless on this. Team DeAndre, swift
you saw him kind of use him more as a
as a receiver in the in The Kansas city, Game, like,
YEAH i would agree like that THAT i obviously my, my,
uh you, know my memory doesn't go as far as, yours,
(31:46):
joke BUT I i would agree this is definitely the
like like what it is like what was the wide
receiver room When Ryan post took, over, right Goes Darnel
mooney and who? Else? Right LIKE i tell you was
that that was pretty much the roomy took. Over and
now this, room like it is definitely better than ANYTHING
i THINK i can, remember even during The cuddler years or.
Anything Like Jake culer would love, this like what like
(32:09):
imagine he had these wide receivers like it would be.
Great but, YEAH i would agree that's that that that
room is probably the deepest at this. Point they bear
shows to keep three, quarterbacks which they haven't done in the,
Past BUT i don't hate doing. That Caleb, Williams, Tyson Bagent,
Case keenum are going to be here three. Quarterbacks Ben
(32:32):
jonson talked about it last. Week it's probably one of
the deeper rooms in the in the in the in the.
LEAGUE i you, KNOW i would kind of agree with.
That Tyson beagent looked great and Case keenum looks back
like he's coming back from. Injury bears are keeping three
running backs at this. Point they Place Travis homer on
injured reserve to start the, year so he'll miss the
first four games of the. Season they Got DeAndre, Swift Roshawn,
(32:54):
johnson kylem a nung. Guy it was a funny sight
on at practice On, Wednesday. Joe The bears had one
running back taking. SNAPS Dj moore took like a couple
of snaps at running back was pretty much you, Know
caleb would hand the ball off To DeAndre swift and
Then tyson and case would just hand it over to
(33:14):
coaches after because there was no one else to have
the ball over. Too so that's kind of an interesting
situation AND i think it's something that we're going to look.
AT i think for them to keep Both rochean And,
KYLE i think that kind of means that The bears
are encouraged that they'll be able to get it back
on the field pretty soon. Here but you, know with
the waivers coming up, here that's going to be coming
(33:35):
up here in half an hour with the waiver claims
after all the cuts. YESTERDAY i, mean the running back
room is definitely one room that you have to address
because at this point it's Just DeAndre.
Speaker 2 (33:44):
Swift, yeah it's just a matter of who's. Healthy now
that said of the waiver. Wire you, know you're not
going to find a thousand year on the waiver. Wire you,
know we all know. That but to, me it's just
a matter of. HEALTH i, mean so who's running back
to we don't know, yet and running back to whoever
it's gonna, be is gonna play against The vikings Because
(34:04):
Yanda swift is not going to receive every. Snap so
that is an important. Position so if either of those
guys can't go and they kind of have a good,
idea whether they'll be ready to go here in you,
know ten eleven, days whatever it, Is, yeah two, weeks,
fourteen twelve, days whatever it may, be maybe they they'll
(34:25):
they'll have a better. Idea and if, not unless there's
something they really love on the waiver wire that they
can get who's available to them and bring them in
and then if you have to cut, them you, know
cut them if the other guys are, HEALTHY I Manung
guy And. Rosehan, so, uh we'll, see but you got
to get that figured it. Out but, again you got
got almost two.
Speaker 1 (34:43):
Weeks they are also lower on the totem pull unfortunately
when it comes to you, know claim. Picks so, YEAH
i don't think you're gonna see what you saw at
the at the beginning Of Ryan poull's his tenure when
he claimed six guys like that's just not gonna. Happen like,
you it's hard to spend actually with like they already
have a talented, Roster LIKE i think the floor of
this roster is much better than it's been in the.
(35:05):
Past so you're not going to get rid of some
guys just for potential. Whatever so that'll be interesting to.
Watch The bears kept three tight Ends, Colekman Colston, loveland
And durham Smythe that's what we kind of. Expected ten offensive,
linemen which include Both kirana, Mcgogee Ryan, Bates Luke, Newman
Theo bended as as. Backups Luke, newman let's talk about
(35:28):
him for a. MINUTE i think he's had a great
camp AND i think that is, uh that is a
great pick at them in the sixth. Round he's showed
he started at left guard the last couple of games
just to Give Joe toney a, break or you, know
he's just playing in place with him because you're not
Playing tony in in the. Preseason and he's looked. Great
he's held his, own he's looked good in the left guard.
Spot he's looked good at right. Guard he looked questionable
(35:51):
at center to start the year or start training. Camp
some of the snaps weren't. Great BUT i think In Luke,
newman you've really found a guy who is going to
be a great depth. PIECE i think if you throw
him into the game because of an injury or something like,
THAT i feel you, FEEL i feel like The bears
have to be pretty confident in his ability to be
in there and you, know not mess.
Speaker 2 (36:12):
Up yeah, NO i think that's looking like a good
late round, pick which again he's Got Ryan poles has
to start hitting on some of. These not that we
expect him to go in there and you, know play a,
lot but if he's a good depth, piece and you,
know we see six round picks get cut and brought
back to the practice, squad so good for, him and you,
know ten offensive linements a. Lot but as we, said
(36:33):
like with the, corners you just never have, enough especially
With Braxton jones health a little. UNCERTAIN i Mean, TONY i,
mean guy's been incredibly, durable not going, well let's not jinx.
Him but you, know you don't. KNOW i mean he
is an older guy in the league, now so good
For Luke. NEWMAN i think that is a. GOT i,
know it's a. Guard you, know it's not like the
quarterback or the wide. Receiver it's not as. Sexy but
(36:56):
good for. Him and, again you never have enough good
ones on the offensive.
Speaker 1 (37:01):
Line were you surprised That karan did't get cut or did?
You were you not even concerned about?
Speaker 2 (37:05):
That i'd, heard you, know some speculation about. THAT i
would have been really. SHOCKED i, mean third round pick
right last. YEAR i mean that's a little early when
you knew going in he was a. PROJECT i, mean
if you thought the guy had an, opportunity a lot
of a big opportunity to play last, year you're expecting
to play a lot last, year that would have been one.
Thing but he's bets had so many injuries he needed
(37:29):
he was a project, anyway so to speak when they drafted,
Him so that would have been shocking to. ME i
do think someone would have picked him up just because
you know. So, No i'm not surprised now a year
from now if you don't see any, improvement if he's
still heard, IT i got he still has, injuries whatever
has been able to stay on the practice, field then that's.
(37:49):
Different BUT i think was too early to pull the
plug on him, Now Zach, pickens AS i thought they
would a lot of people thought they would see him
on the waiver and that was the. Case But i'm an,
Daji i'm in, guys you, Rather i'm. SORRY i THOUGHT
i thought it'd been too would have been too early
to pull the plug on.
Speaker 1 (38:08):
Him, YEAH i think the talent is there and he
just hasn't been on the field Right. LIKE i think
that's A it stinks for, him and it's things for
The bears obviously that they don't know what they have
at this. Point BUT i don't think you cut bad
with him at this point and you see what you,
have maybe you can develop him as a guard and
maybe he can kind, of you, know be a swing.
TACKLE i think he has a place on this team
(38:29):
still if he gets any, opportunity you, know to practice out. There,
Uh Sports Chicago style calling his. Shot he's Calling Luke
newman the future starting. Guard MAYBE i, can MAYBE i.
Will that'd be. Great if you get a future starting
guard out Of Luke newman in the sixth, round THEN
i think you do did a heck of a job
and then it happened sometimes, Right but obviously he was
(38:50):
a holly holy crossed kid until he went To Michigan
state last year for his loan, Season so maybe he was, underlooked,
undervalued underlooked At but, yeah we've seen great things from
him so, far and it'll be interesting to see what
happens moving forward with. Him defensive, tackles like you Mentioned
joe The bears cut bait With Zach pickens that didn't work,
(39:11):
out third round pick in twenty twenty. Three injuries and
other stuff just kind of he just was never really
able to fully take a handle of the. Position Grady Jared, Jervon,
Dexter Andrew, Billy Shamar, Turner Chris williams gets that final.
SPOT i don't feel like there was really a surprise
in that.
Speaker 2 (39:27):
Group, yeah, YEAH i. AGREE i do like the depth
because you, KNOW i like Big Andrew. BILLINGS i think
a lot of people. Do, yeah and you, know he
doesn't have to play every. Down he can't play every,
down BUT i like the duck. There now they got to,
produce but at least if you, know and it doesn't
Mean Grady juror's got to play you, know every snap,
(39:50):
either but at his. Age BUT i like that. Group
we'll see if they can stuff the run and you,
know at least apply some interior pressure there and make
life easier on your dns than you guys who are
rushing the.
Speaker 1 (40:03):
QUARTERBACK i would definitely agree with that defensive End montest
what Obviously Dioda Anglo Austin, Booker Austin booker were expecting
who probably missed the next couple. Weeks Ben johnson said
After friday's, game that kind of. Stinks you really want
him to be out there BECAUSE i think he can
really take a big step this, year And Dominice robinson
And Daniel hardy got the final couple. SPOTS i think
(40:25):
that kind of makes. Sense AND i wanted to ask, You.
Joe obviously we'll talk more about this next week when
we're like previewing the season and that sort of, stuff
but do you feel more encouraged about this pass rusher,
PERSONALLY i haven't seen. IT i don't think they Touched
williams at, all Or williams they don't. Touch they didn't
Touch mahomes at. All obviously he's the. Magician he knows
(40:46):
how to get out of different. Situations but you only
had one quarterback hit on him with your starting. Defense
it was a concern for me heading into training, camp
AND i don't THINK i feel much better about the
pass rush at this.
Speaker 2 (40:58):
Point, yeah that was just a pointing that That chiefs,
Game it's, like oh my, gosh it's twenty twenty four
all over. Again here we go again and. AGAIN i
know It's Patrick, mahomes but there was like no Pressure
Patrick mahomes. Had if he needed two minutes back there
to find someone like he had, it you know that
he was going to have. It so that was. DISCOURAGING
i don't know how much The bears. Showed you're not
(41:20):
trying to you know that, too but boy THAT i
still want to see more out Of Montez. SWEAT i,
MEAN I i think you've said it, too and other
people have said. It he's had a good, camp but
you know that guy's paid for production, sacks namely we
got to see more from from, him AND i don't
know what we got To odengo. Yet we'll. SEE i, mean,
(41:42):
potential as we know in every sport gets coaches. Fired we'll.
See they they made him a priority in the in
the off season and free, agency got to see production from.
Him but that passed rush or lack of it against
The chiefs was a little disturbed because to, Me, michael
(42:02):
we talked so much about this, offense because that game
against The chiefs looks so much like twenty twenty four
where the defense can't stop, anybody they can't get off the,
field and before you know, it it's late in the
first quarter and you're chasing seventeen to. Nothing, well here
we go, again and that's unfair to your. OFFENSE i
mean that's unfair to the. Quarterback But Caleb williams the
most scrutinized quarterback in the league. Nationally you know it's
(42:27):
gonna be his fault. Again but it's not gonna be his.
Fault get off the. Field they got to do this
BECAUSE i don't want to see, this these fourteen deficits
right in the first quarter again where you're chasing and
now the pressure is on the, throw you can't get
your running game, going and then the offense can't stay
on the. Field now the defense goes out there another
field for another ten. PLAYS i, mean we can't have
(42:48):
a repeat of. That so the defense could do its
offensive big failure by just getting off the.
Speaker 1 (42:53):
Field, yeah for, SURE i think, LISTEN i. LISTEN i
think the defensive tackle position is been. IMPROVED i think
you're going to get a lot more pressure out of,
there AND i think you're gonna get a lot of you,
know you're going to get a lot of pressure out
of the middle of the, defense the defensive. Line AND
i Think Monte sweat has looked much better this training
camp than he did in the. Past he's not. Injured
(43:13):
he looks like the guy that you kind of paid
a lot of money and you traded a second round,
pick and he's going to need. Support he can't do it.
Himself so it'll be interesting to see How Dennis allen
is able to scheme up the, fronts how he's able
to create a lot of different looks to confuse opposing.
Quarterbacks but, YEAH i don't THINK i agree with, You.
Friday you know you're not going to show what you're
going to show in the regular, season but The Kansas
(43:35):
City chiefs weren't doing that, either, Right so it's kind
of like it's kind of one of those situations where
you don't want to overreact to a preseason, game especially
preseason game number. Three but at the same, TIME i
feel like for most of training camp we didn't see
much of a pass rush at, all other than against
The bears offensive, line which is developing. Still so that's
definitely something we're going to have to look at as
(43:57):
we kind of get ready for the. SEASON a Linebacker, TREMADA. Tj,
Edwards Noah, Sewell Rubin hiple Like Carlo Jones. Junior nothing
is surprise. There Cornerback Jalen, Johnson Perk, Stevenson Kyler, gordon Nashn,
Wright nick, McLeod Josh blackwell all playing at. Cornerback nick
McCleod has looked good in place Of Kyler, gordon SO
(44:17):
i think that's a good thing to look forward to
If kyler isn't one hundred. PERCENT i Think nick McLoud
has shown you that he can play pretty. Well Safety Shakwan,
Brisker Kevin, Bayer Jonathan, Owen's Elijah, hicks special. Teams Cayrol
santos is your, Kicker Taylor Tory taylor is your, punter
And Scott daly is your long. Snapper nothing changing, there
and yeah that's your fifty three man, Roster so, YEAH
(44:40):
i would. AGREE i THINK i Think Zach pickens was
your biggest. Surprise if it was a, surprise but that
was your biggest. Move Tyler scott two of your twenty
three twenty three draft, picks and the running back. ROOM
i think those are the biggest. Things you're kind of
looking forward now just to kind of see are they
going to make some, additions some subtractions here because they
(45:01):
got to reinforce some other parts of the.
Speaker 2 (45:03):
Roster, YEAH i wouldn't be. Surprised you're always looking to
improve your. Roster every team, is even The. Chiefs so
maybe maybe a sign a corner depending on who's. Available
you see The steelers cut the undrafted. KID i think
his first name Is. Beanie like four interceptions last, year
undrafted kid they cut. Him you, know they put a
(45:24):
lot of money into the Secondary pittsburgh did in the off,
season SO i don't, know maybe there's a kid if
if they if they can get. HIM i assuming he just.
CLAIM i don't know what The bears think of, Him
but The bears actually picked like tenth in the waiver
process because you, know they're coming off a stinky year,
again so maybe they're running. Back it really just depends
(45:45):
on who's. HEALTHY i don't know if there were any
big surprise names with the running backs that were cut.
Yesterday The broncos cut one of their, guys who THOUGHT
i THINK i thought they were kind of high ON i,
read SO i don't. Know, again you're not gonna find
day One you better not be looking for day one
starters off the waiver. Wire we know The bears aren't
(46:06):
a finished product by any, means but still you don't
want that and that's not gonna. Happen so BUT i
wouldn't be surprised if they claim a couple guys, again
especially in the defensive back. Bill maybe a running back,
again but, really what are? Unified you, know If roshan
and an young guy are, Healthy i'm guessing you know
The bears are are happy with. That and as long
(46:27):
as one of them is ready to go against The,
vikings yeah for.
Speaker 1 (46:30):
Sure roberts chiming in one last question before we say.
Goodbye Sorry i'm, Late. Robert you don't have to apologize
if you already gone over. This but where do you
think our weakest positions? Are starters and? Depth Ryan paul's
answered this question last. Yesterday he said that he feels
really confident in the IF i remember. Correctly Now i'm
(46:53):
kind of doubting. MYSELF i think he's at the offensive.
Line he's very big on the offensive line this year
and the depth they have and that sort of. Stuff
but when he answered the question about maybe the position
isn't where it needs to be and where he thought
it was at the beginning of training camp he, entered
he talked about the secondary AND i think mostly because
of the, injuries right, like you don't know what you
have With Jalen, johnson with With Kyler, Gordon Terry. Stevenson
(47:19):
you're still trying to see what you have, there Right,
like SO i think there are a lot of big
questions about what is. It you, KNOW i think heading
into training camp are, like this is outside of wide
receiver and you, know maybe tight, End LIKE i think
this is probably one of your strongest. Positions and Now
i'm kind of, like, well If jalen doesn't play And
tyler doesn't play Like. Tyre you, know Is tyreek carrying the?
Speaker 2 (47:39):
Load?
Speaker 1 (47:40):
Like what does this room look? LIKE i THINK i
think you have a lot of questions with that group
now than you, did especially at the beginning of training.
Speaker 2 (47:46):
Camp, yes that that's my biggest concern is secondary mainly
because of the. Health if you're gonna tell, Me Jalen
johnson's gonna play seventeen, games and so Is Kyler, Gordon
so IS. Jr Kwan brisker or close to that, Number i'm,
good you. KNOW i think you can get by with.
THAT i think it does. HELP i keep talking About
Justin jefferson only because he's arguably the best wide receiver of.
(48:08):
Football but The, vikings let's not. Forget with all due
respect TO jj. McCarthy maybe he'll be An All pro this,
year who, knows but he's a young. GUY i make
his FIRST nfl. Start so you're not going up against you,
know it's like going up Against Lamar jackson week one
Or Jordan love you. Know so that's. Good and The
vikings are you, Know jennis is a little banged. UP
i saw they Acquired adam thielin. Today they got him
(48:30):
back so they're hurting out wide. Receivers so it's not
like you're facing this team that you're expecting is gonna
drop thirty five points on him come Come monday night
for the season over. NOT i, mean we know what
The vikings did last. Year they were a great. Story
but you, know new quarterback, there they're a little thin
at wide. Receiver so if, anything maybe you know that
that plays into The bear's hands favorably For week one
(48:54):
going forward after, THAT i don't, Know but if it
wasn't for the injury situation the secondary and then Losing
Zey frasier for the year for the personal, REASONS i
MIGHT i probably feel. Differently but to, me it's all
about the health, there the health to the to the key.
Speaker 1 (49:11):
Guys really, yeah because if your key guys are, good
like you feel good at the, position, Right like you
feel good With Jalen, johnson and then you feel good
With Kyler. Gordon if it's, like if It's Jalen, Johnson
Kyler gordon and you know Either Tyrek stevens or A, naseean,
RIGHT i think you're very confident in that quarterback, room,
right and then you got you, know you Got Tyrek,
stevenson and you Got Josh blackwell coming in, there and you,
(49:33):
Know nick, McLeod i think you feel. Good but if
you're depleted, HERE i THINK i think it'll be really
interesting to. Watch but that's obviously something we'll watch for
the next couple of weeks here as we get ready
for the. Vikings but that is everything that we've got
