El 30 de marzo de 2021, Yershov fue acusado formalmente en base a grabaciones de video realizadas por una persona que pretendía estar interesada en estudiar la Biblia, pero usó esas grabaciones para entregarlas a la FSB (la policía secreta de Rusia). Practicar su fe como testigo de Jehová es ilegal en Rusia desde que el grupo de Estudiantes de la Biblia fue prohibido oficialmente en el país en 2017, siguiendo los pasos de Hitler y la Unión Soviética.
El 22 de junio de 2021, su caso penal se presentó ante el Tribunal de la ciudad de Severskiy de la región de Tomsk hasta la reciente sentencia de 3 años de prisión.
