>> Announcer (00:00):
On the next episode of Sip, Suds and
Smokes.
>> Julianna (00:04):
Well, while visiting this
wholesale club or clubs,
Good old boy Dave was kind enough to bring back the heavy
hitter IPA variety pack from Sierra
Nevada Brewing Company.
>> Dave (00:17):
The heavy hitter IPA variety pack from
Sierra NV Brewing Company contains
the, uh, Hoptonite double
IPA, which is exclusive to this
pack. The
Cosmic Little Thing Hazy Double
ipa, Atomic Torpedo
Imperial ipa, which is a revved
(00:40):
up version of just the, you know, the plain old
Torpedo ipa, and
then the Hot Bullet Imperial IPA
Magnum Edition, which is a
limited release.
>> Announcer (00:53):
We'll be right back after this break.
(01:17):
Brought to you almost live from the dude in the
basement studios. Why? Because that's where the
good stuff is. It sips, suds and
smokes with your smokin host, the good old
boys.
>> Dave (01:50):
Suds. Suds. Suds.
>> Announcer (01:52):
Uh, it's time for more suds.
>> Julianna (01:59):
Hey there. Yeah, you
over there. Don't worry, you dialed
in the right spot. And here we
are for another sud segment where
good beer really meets bad radio.
I'm one of your hosts, good old gal Juliana. And
joining me at the table today is good ol
(02:19):
boy Dave.
>> Dave (02:21):
Hello, friends
and enemies.
>> Julianna (02:25):
Oh, that was very.
>> Dave (02:27):
Especially enemies.
>> Julianna (02:28):
Oh, okay. Well, on
today's episode, we're gonna be covering something that
we think we're gonna really like. Good old boy Dave, you
think we're really gonna like this one?
>> Dave (02:39):
It's beer. So. Yeah.
>> Julianna (02:42):
Okay. Fair, fair.
So recently, Good old Boy Dave visited one of
the local wholesale clubs.
>> Dave (02:49):
Ooh, yep.
>> Julianna (02:51):
Feeling a little bougie there.
>> Dave (02:52):
I don't buy potatoes unless I'm buying
20 pounds of potatoes.
And I like to buy at least five pounds of scram.
>> Julianna (03:03):
You like the things in bulk?
>> Dave (03:04):
Yes.
>> Julianna (03:05):
Okay.
>> Dave (03:06):
Except the prices.
>> Julianna (03:08):
Well, while visiting this
wholesale club or clubs,
Good old boy Dave was kind enough to bring back the Heavy
Hitter IPA Variety Pack from Sierra
Nevada Brewing Company in both
Chico, California and Mills Creek,
North Carolina.
>> Dave (03:26):
I think Sierra Nevada deserves some cheers.
>> Julianna (03:30):
They do. They totally do.
As you can probably tell from some previous episodes, we
are fans of, uh, Sierra Nevada.
>> Dave (03:38):
We love them. Long time.
>> Julianna (03:39):
Yes, long, long time. So, good
boy Dave, why don't you tell us what's included in
this big old box of beer?
>> Dave (03:48):
The Heavy Hitter IPA Variety Pack from
Sierra Nevada Brewing Company contains
the Hoptonite Double
ipa, which is exclusive to this
pack, the
Cosmic Little Thing Hazy Double
ipa, Atomic Torpedo
Imperial ipa, which is a revved
(04:10):
up version of just the, uh, you know, the plain old
Torpedo ipa. And
then the Hot Bullet Imperial IPA
Magnum Edition, which is a
limited release.
>> Julianna (04:23):
Cool.
>> Dave (04:24):
And just so, you know, the smallest
beer in this pack is, like
7.2%.
>> Julianna (04:31):
You know, and I was gonna say, I wonder what the. Heavy
Hiterness.
>> Dave (04:34):
Yeah, why would they call it Heavy Hitters?
>> Julianna (04:36):
That doesn't make sense. Are we talking about the New York Yankees
lineup?
>> Dave (04:39):
Oh, that would have been a swing and a miss.
>> Julianna (04:45):
Ouch.
>> Dave (04:45):
You can't make up comedy gold like that, folks.
>> Julianna (04:50):
Or can you?
>> Dave (04:51):
Or can you make up a divorce contract?
>> Julianna (04:54):
Okay, we're going to be
tasting these beers on the fly. Um,
and for those of you that know we do enjoy doing this, we
literally crack open the can or bottle and
just start tasting first,
drinking it and saying words and things.
Yes. So we're going to be tasting these beers on the fly and then
(05:15):
giving our tasting notes as we go.
And, hey, speaking of those, good old boy
Dave, why don't you give us the suds ratings for today?
>> Dave (05:23):
We'll be tasting and rating these beers
from Sierra Nevada Brewing Company with our suds
ratings and signature belching
sounds. Here are those ratings now. One,
that sucks. Give me anything but a
buddy.
Two, Was that a belch?
(05:45):
Three. Ah, what, uh, a relief.
Four, a body should really not make that
sound.
Uh,
and five, listen to that hang time.
Give me another.
(06:09):
In case you're wondering, in radio land, uh, the longer the
belch, the better the beer.
Oh, yeah, I thought
that was implied, but, well, but still, whatever.
>> Julianna (06:22):
We might have some new listeners. Okay,
so before we get into the beer, I just wanted to give
a 10 second history on Sierra Nevada
Brewing Company for those that may be living under a rock
and have no idea who they are.
>> Dave (06:35):
All right, I'll start counting down.
>> Julianna (06:37):
Okay.
>> Dave (06:37):
Ten.
>> Julianna (06:38):
So nine.
>> Dave (06:39):
Um.
>> Julianna (06:40):
Sierra Nevada Brewing Company was founded in
1980 by Ken
Grossman and Paul Camusi in Chico,
California. Grossman's passion for home brewing
led him to open a homebrew supply store before launching
the brewery using salvaged equipment like dairy tanks and
bottling equipment. In other words, he kind of
MacGyvered his way in at the beginning. And
(07:01):
the brewery was first. The brewery's first beer
was stout, followed by the
infamous famous Sierra
Nevada Pale, uh, ale.
>> Dave (07:11):
Still the standard for the style.
>> Julianna (07:14):
Yes.
>> Dave (07:14):
After all these years.
>> Julianna (07:16):
Yes. And to think from 1980,
and here they are. Yeah, still at it.
>> Dave (07:21):
That's like 106 years or something.
>> Julianna (07:23):
120. Oh, you know, but who's counting, man?
>> Dave (07:27):
Yeah, man.
>> Julianna (07:28):
Okay.
>> Dave (07:28):
And King Grossman's still alive, too. That's crazy.
>> Julianna (07:31):
Oh, my God.
>> Dave (07:32):
Yeah. I love how they started this as home brewers
and started as, like, A homebrew supply shop.
>> Julianna (07:37):
Yeah.
>> Dave (07:38):
You hear stories like, I think Ballast Point kind of
started the same way, so. Well, they didn't turn out as well.
But still.
>> Julianna (07:45):
But still. Right. And if you think about
the beer landscape in
1980, there really wasn't
hardly any craft.
>> Dave (07:55):
Yeah.
>> Julianna (07:56):
I mean, if there was, it might have been like a handful across the
United States.
>> Dave (07:59):
Uh, yeah. I mean, these guys are back in the day of, like, you know, Charlie
Papazian and like, back when home brewing
was really just starting to get going.
>> Julianna (08:07):
Yeah, yeah, exactly. I mean, and otherwise you
relied on, you know, the paps and the.
>> Dave (08:12):
I mean, 1980, I was like
seven years old, so I was still just drinking light beer
at that point.
>> Julianna (08:19):
Oh, yeah, yeah. You hadn't graduated up yet.
>> Dave (08:22):
No, no, no. I was watching my waistline. Yeah, sure,
sure, sure.
>> Julianna (08:25):
Okay, well, let's get to the beer,
huh?
>> Dave (08:28):
Well, I might as well. We're here.
>> Julianna (08:30):
Okay. Yes, we're here. So the first one that we are going to
talk about is the Hoptonite
double IPA, which is
exclusive to this pack.
7.2% ABV. This is a
classic West coast style double IPA that's
loaded with notes of citrus and grapefruit rind from
generous amounts of aromatic hops. The bold and
(08:52):
aggressive double IPA remains drinkable and will keep you coming
back for more.
>> Dave (08:57):
Smells nice. Citrusy, pithy.
>> Julianna (09:00):
Okay, so I know pale
ale versus ipa, but do you feel a little
reminiscent of the Pale Ale? To a degree.
>> Dave (09:08):
I think there's probably always going to be
a little bit of that on going on. And to
be honest, this beer
does not drink. It's like 7.2% to
me, personally. I think it's. It's very smooth,
it's very balanced. The people at
Sierra Nevada, they've pretty much got
(09:28):
hoppy beer down to a science.
>> Julianna (09:30):
I mean, this is dialed in. Yeah, like. And
as you would expect. So is the
expectation high given that we
know what Sierra Nevada is about? I mean, we've been talking
about their beer for years and they kind
of.
>> Dave (09:45):
I think you would be built a.
>> Julianna (09:46):
Map of what IPAs can be.
>> Dave (09:48):
I think you would be more,
uh. I like a lot of. I think would be a lot
more judgy about
a Sierra Nevada beer that was, you
know, maybe. Maybe the hot balance was out a little
bit or it finished a little bit weird
or, you know, like, whatever. Like little defects
(10:09):
that for some smaller, newer breweries, you might go, wow.
Well, they're figuring it out. These guys have figured it out.
So if something goes awry with A sour
or the Sierra, uh, Nevada beer. Then
you're gonna notice it more, you're gonna call it out
more and you're gonna be like, hey, man, what's going on
here?
>> Julianna (10:27):
Sure. And the expectation's high. So the
creaminess is there. The creaminess doesn't linger, though,
it stops.
>> Dave (10:34):
Yeah. Nice, um, finish. Yeah.
>> Julianna (10:36):
Yep. And you would say that this is very
citrusy, like grapefruity.
>> Dave (10:41):
Yeah, yeah, I would. Yeah. Would you?
>> Julianna (10:43):
Okay.
>> Dave (10:43):
Yeah, yeah.
>> Julianna (10:44):
And then mix with the pine. So it's a good balance.
>> Dave (10:47):
Yeah. And I think what's cool, and
this kind of goes back to the mix pack thing too, is
like, so this one you only get in this
mix pack, Right. Or that's what they say
for me, like, it's worth
it to me to buy this, this big pack of
beer to try, uh, a
(11:08):
Sierra Nevada IPA that I haven't had
before, maybe couldn't get. I don't know that I would
feel that with just any brewery,
though.
>> Julianna (11:17):
Fair.
>> Dave (11:18):
I don't think anybody can kind of just automatically pull
this off and be like, oh, yeah, we'll sell
you, you know, three or four six packs of
beer in a box and you'll probably like it,
you know?
>> Julianna (11:30):
Yeah, sure. And this, I mean, to
me, when you brought it home, I was like, oh, this is great. Like,
this is a no brainer. Like, yeah, if I saw it, I would pick it up. You
know what I mean?
>> Dave (11:40):
Right, yeah, why not?
>> Julianna (11:41):
Sure. Okay. So what do you want to rate
this beer?
>> Dave (11:45):
I think.
>> Julianna (11:46):
Okay, yeah, we are going to rate the hop tonight
double IPA A4.
And we'll be back in a minute.
Welcome back, everyone. So today's
episode is taking a little
mix pack, if you will, from Sierra Nevada,
(12:08):
um, which is called their Heavy Hitter
IPA Variety Pack. And we've just essentially
we started talking.
>> Dave (12:14):
About what's in that Heavy Hitter
IPA pack.
>> Julianna (12:18):
Yes. So the first one that we talked about
was the hop tonight double IPA, which is
7.2% and the lowest
ABV.
>> Dave (12:27):
In the whole pack. So we got
the little baby out of the way and we're going to go work our
way up.
>> Julianna (12:34):
Exactly. So the next one that we're going
to talk about, and I think I've.
>> Dave (12:38):
Had this one before, this one's widely available.
>> Julianna (12:41):
Okay. Is the comic
Cosmic Little thing hazy double IPA.
Now this one is 8%. So it's a
little. Not so little, it's a little bump up. Right.
So ride an interstellar wave of
tropical flavor in this Cosmic Little thing. A
hazy nebula glowing with comet strata
(13:02):
and Helios hops with notes of citrus
berries and lychee.
Um, they use Munich out of lychee.
>> Dave (13:10):
If you hit me in the face with it.
>> Julianna (13:12):
Really? Um, they
have munic oats and two row and
wheat. And then the hops are Comet,
Eureka, Helios, Simcoe, Strata.
>> Dave (13:25):
Yeah, definitely get the hints
of the Simcoe and the strata.
I'm guessing Helios might be worth. Some of the berries
come from. I don't know how
hazy this is. I mean, it's.
>> Julianna (13:39):
Okay. Yeah. Because I was going to say, if you
tell me that we're going to be drinking a hazy
ipa, um, maybe.
>> Dave (13:47):
This is west coast hazy.
>> Julianna (13:49):
Okay.
>> Dave (13:49):
You know, like, it's not. It's
definitely not a Nipah.
>> Julianna (13:54):
No.
>> Dave (13:54):
Uh, it does have some oats and some wheat in
it, so there should be. Well, the. We would be more the
mouthfeel, but there's some oats in it, so you should get some mouthfeel and
maybe some, you know, some
stuff floating around. But I think they're too. Dag. I'm good
at filtering and, you know, all their.
In processes.
>> Julianna (14:13):
That they're hazy is a mild hazy.
>> Dave (14:15):
It's. It's hazy.
>> Julianna (14:17):
Ish.
>> Dave (14:17):
Hazy adjacent. Oh, let's call it
that.
>> Julianna (14:21):
Um, okay.
>> Dave (14:22):
Still super tasty. It definitely does have tropical
fruits, uh, berries and things. It's got. They.
They describe the flavor and the aroma accurately.
I just don't know that the mouth feel is
totally there for, like, what I
generally consider a hazy. Because when you think hazy,
you're thinking all that matter that's floating
(14:43):
in. Around in there, making it.
>> Julianna (14:45):
You're thinking chewy, you're going to get.
>> Dave (14:46):
A little chewiness or whatever, a
little extra, you know, viscosity or whatever. But I
don't necessarily feel that.
>> Julianna (14:55):
Okay. So, I mean, we could split hairs about
what is like, true haze,
pseudo haze, you know, blah, blah, blah.
Okay. But I think overall I
do like the creamy taste of it.
>> Dave (15:09):
Yeah, no, uh.
>> Julianna (15:10):
Or the mouthfeel, I should say.
>> Dave (15:12):
I have no detraction from. And maybe it's a
hazy, like a chill haze
kind of thing. Maybe that's what it is, a chill haze.
Yeah, chill haze.
>> Julianna (15:22):
And compared to the previous, the double
IPA that we had, because I have a little bit left of that,
this is a lot creamier, a lot smoother. Um,
and it's, um.
>> Dave (15:31):
Yeah, the finish on this is, like,
not as resiny,
like pithy, sharp, you know, like grapefruit.
>> Julianna (15:41):
But you're not expecting to get a.
>> Dave (15:43):
Totally different experience from that beer to this
Beer.
>> Julianna (15:46):
Right. We're not hanging out in the forest, which is crazy.
>> Dave (15:49):
Like, I mean, they were just living in the same box
with each other for who knows how long and
probably, you know, rubbing against each other and.
But no, that one's that they were.
>> Julianna (16:00):
Isolated by the aluminum.
>> Dave (16:01):
Well, I guess
it's not very thick aluminum.
You know, I mean, you're. You know, you're living in a box with
another beer for a few weeks,
and, you know, stuff happens. I'm just saying.
But these guys, they kept it. Kept it professional.
>> Julianna (16:20):
Well, they are.
>> Dave (16:20):
That's what Sierra Nevada does, though. They keep it professional.
>> Julianna (16:24):
Rather professional. Yeah. Okay.
So. Yeah. So no lychee.
Yeah. I wonder.
>> Dave (16:31):
I don't know. Maybe there's lychee.
>> Julianna (16:34):
No, I just don't. I don't feel like there
is. I feel like the other.
I feel. I feel citrus and berries, but I just don't
feel lychee.
>> Dave (16:44):
I think Kendall would taste the lychee.
>> Julianna (16:46):
Well, fair. But sadly, Kendall's not
here.
>> Dave (16:49):
He's not.
>> Julianna (16:50):
So we just have to rate this.
>> Dave (16:51):
Kendall would taste what day of the week it was
probably canned on, so that's fair. Yeah.
>> Julianna (16:57):
And that's why.
>> Dave (16:58):
That's why we love it.
>> Julianna (16:59):
Exactly. Okay, so what do you want to rate
the cosmic little thing?
>> Dave (17:05):
Well, uh, I think
even though it's not
necessarily as hazy in appearance
as one might expect, it still has some of the
mouth feel, still has all the
flavors, the tropical, the berries and everything. And
it's a tasty beer from start to finish. And
(17:25):
it drinks really easy for 8%, which, it
seems to be, so far, a pretty common theme
for this box.
>> Julianna (17:33):
Yeah. Do you think that this one feels, though, a
little bit more, uh, with the abv? No.
Still the same.
>> Dave (17:40):
No, uh, I'm not. Okay.
>> Julianna (17:41):
I'm not laying down, like, you feel like you're drinking a six.
>> Dave (17:44):
Yeah. I mean, for this, it
would be more that I would get
full rather than I would
feel buzzed.
>> Julianna (17:53):
Okay.
>> Dave (17:54):
Or I would start getting full before I
realized how buzzed I was feeling.
>> Julianna (17:59):
Yeah. Okay.
>> Dave (18:00):
I think that would be what stopped me.
>> Julianna (18:02):
That's fair.
>> Dave (18:03):
The flavors are not, like, so crazy or
so in your face that it just wears your palate out.
>> Julianna (18:09):
Yeah.
>> Dave (18:09):
You know, I mean, and especially, like, if you're having this with some food, like
some, you know, a burger or some chili or something.
>> Julianna (18:15):
Yeah. And speaking of which, when you,
um. Okay, what would you pair with this?
>> Dave (18:20):
Yeah, I pair anything. Tacos.
>> Julianna (18:22):
Okay.
>> Dave (18:22):
I mean, you know, that's my jam, but sure. I mean, a
burger. Yeah. Anything Maybe something spicy just
to let those hops help you out a little bit.
>> Julianna (18:30):
Okay.
>> Dave (18:31):
You know, get through it.
>> Julianna (18:32):
Yeah.
>> Dave (18:32):
But I don't know, what do you want to rate it?
>> Julianna (18:35):
Um, I want to rate this a 4.
>> Dave (18:37):
All right. You're in charge.
>> Julianna (18:40):
Never.
>> Dave (18:44):
So interesting. Uh, to me, with this
heavy hitter IPA pack is like. Okay, so
like we said, the smallest beer in here
is 7.2%, um, in. And
because it was at a wholesale club, I guess, I mean, you probably
find this at other stores, but it was like
24 beers. So what, that's like two cases of beer,
(19:04):
I guess four six packs.
>> Julianna (19:06):
Right.
>> Dave (19:06):
And. And that's a fairly big
commitment. Um,
not if you're not
really an IPA person or you're not sure.
But, like, the. The thing that I was
thinking about is, like, so when
we talk about a lot of these mix
packs, we talk about. Okay. And we've done
(19:29):
a lot of episodes about mixed packs.
>> Julianna (19:30):
Oh, sure.
>> Dave (19:31):
Which everyone should go back and listen to.
Um, but like, sometimes
you're like, okay, this would be a great mix
pack. You. Okay.
>> Julianna (19:41):
Yeah.
>> Dave (19:41):
Okay. All right. She killed a spider, everybody.
>> Julianna (19:44):
Um.
>> Dave (19:46):
Like, really light beers or something they might take to a
party or, uh, something where
it's. It's a. A brewery that you
want to get to know. Right. And you don't want to buy a
full six pack, so you might. So a lot of these
mix packs have like 12. So you might get three beers each
of four beers or four beers each of three beers.
(20:07):
You're not buying a full six pack, but, you know, you probably like, one or
two of them. You also get the limited release,
maybe a, uh, mix exclusive or
something.
>> Julianna (20:16):
Sure.
>> Dave (20:16):
But like, this one, it's like,
I don't know if you take this to a party. I
mean, maybe, but, like, you're. You're taking
beers that are going to get people
full and. Or buzzed.
>> Julianna (20:32):
Well, that's. Yeah, that was the thing that I was going to
ask you is. Okay, so if I'm going
to the store, because I'm, I'm, um, going to meet out some
friends. Like, you know, maybe I'm going to the
lake. Yeah.
>> Dave (20:44):
Going to the party or whatever.
>> Julianna (20:46):
Yeah, exactly. We're like, we're hiking for the day, and then we're gonna
camp at night. Whatever. I know that
some of my friends will be beer nerds.
>> Dave (20:54):
Yeah.
>> Julianna (20:54):
And others may not want
something too hoppy. You know, they're in the outdoors, they just want something
crisp. Whatever.
>> Dave (21:01):
You get something that's like one of those, like. Oh, it's
three loggers and a pale ale or
something, you know, whatever. And they're all like 4 to
5%.
>> Julianna (21:10):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly. So I try to find
something that's a variety of things. Right? Okay, fine.
But with this, okay, first of all,
they're hoppy.
>> Dave (21:20):
You're all in on hops, right?
>> Julianna (21:22):
I mean there's a level of confidence
in putting this four pet. Well, this variety
pack, which is like essentially four beers together
because they're all so
hoppy and they're all like higher abv.
So I guess this begs the question is
what kind of party are we going to with
(21:44):
this?
>> Dave (21:44):
This is a party where hopefully nobody's driving
after or something. Everybody's got a designated driver.
>> Julianna (21:51):
Sure. And it's not these like these will sit forever.
>> Dave (21:53):
No, that's a great point too.
>> Julianna (21:55):
Answer in just a minute.
Hey, welcome back everyone.
>> Dave (22:02):
Hey, thanks.
>> Julianna (22:04):
So today's episode we were talking about the
heavy hitter Ivy IPA variety pack.
That is from Sierra Nevada Brewing Company in both
Chico.
>> Dave (22:14):
Yeah.
>> Julianna (22:15):
And Mills Creek, North Carolina.
>> Dave (22:18):
One carrot, one in California, one in North Carolina.
>> Julianna (22:20):
Yeah.
>> Dave (22:21):
They get you from both sides.
>> Julianna (22:22):
They do.
>> Dave (22:23):
Bam. Bam.
>> Julianna (22:23):
They do. So right before the break we were talking about
where to take this variety
pack because again we're talking about
beer that the lowest ABV on this is
7.2%.
>> Dave (22:37):
Mhm.
>> Julianna (22:37):
And you're getting 24 in
this pack. So
let's answer the question of where do
you take this? What kind of party is this?
>> Dave (22:50):
So I think, I don't know if there's a
party. I mean if you had a bunch of hop head
bros that are hanging around the pool or
something. Yeah. Then you do that. I think this
is also good for
um, a hop head on a
budget or who's, you know, like
a bulk buyer like me. You stick them
(23:12):
in your beer fridge. Because ordinarily
we say hoppy beers have to be, you
know, drink pretty fresh. But we did a
past episode of Sierra Nevada where Sierra
Nevada Pale Ale was featured as
one of the beers and it was really
good. A year after sitting in a
(23:33):
closet at room temperature for a year, you
know, so I don't think Sierra Nevada is
necessarily as worried about fall off.
>> Julianna (23:41):
Right.
>> Dave (23:41):
And I think as a consumer you could
feel good about, well, I don't want to drink, I don't want to just
pound 7,8% beers all the time.
>> Julianna (23:50):
Sure.
>> Dave (23:50):
You could throw this in your fridge, keep it cold
and you know, within a reasonable amount of time you'd be, you'd
be pretty good.
>> Julianna (23:57):
Sure, sure. And that was going to be,
um, part of the conversation for me is
if you had a 24 pack of bottles
versus cans, you would have to
drink them a lot quicker, I think.
>> Dave (24:12):
Yeah. I think you're. You're risking
oxidation and. And fall off
easier with bottles, because we. We kind of found that
out, too, in that same episode, that the can,
you know, holds it all in a lot better
than a bottle, even a brown bottle.
>> Julianna (24:30):
Yeah. Uh, and if you're spending the money
and the time to enjoy
beer that was made by a brewery that really
enjoys their hops and is very thoughtful
about the hops that go into their beer.
>> Dave (24:44):
Yep.
>> Julianna (24:44):
Uh, you want to enjoy it
at its freshest, if you will.
>> Dave (24:49):
Yeah. Or, you know, as close as you're
realistically gonna get buying something
from a wholesale club after, you
know, in another part of the country from the brewery.
>> Julianna (25:00):
Sure.
>> Dave (25:01):
You know, you always have to think about the chain of
custody that beers go through.
>> Julianna (25:05):
Yeah. Yeah. I mean, more so than
other forms.
>> Dave (25:09):
We would like to think that leaves the, you
know, brewery in a refrigerated truck
and stays nice and cold all the way until
it gets to our house, to our home.
>> Julianna (25:20):
Yeah.
>> Dave (25:20):
Sadly, no.
But some of these beers are made to. To withstand.
>> Julianna (25:26):
And the dream is cuts. All right, let's get back to
another beer. All right.
>> Dave (25:29):
Is this one really small?
>> Julianna (25:31):
Uh, yes. So small. This is the Atomic
Torpedo. Imperial Atomic Torpedo.
>> Dave (25:36):
We're done with regular torpedoes. They're stupid.
>> Julianna (25:39):
The revved up version of the Torpedo
IPA coming in a mild
9.2% ABV. So
this Imperial Hop collision fuses
the west coast and juicy IPAs,
unleashing atomic flavors of lush fruit,
citrus, and sticky pine. First
released as a double IPA, they kicked
(26:01):
the atomic torpedo up a notch from
8.2% to
9.2%. For bigger, bolder,
imperial IPA intensity.
>> Dave (26:10):
Dagum.
>> Julianna (26:11):
M. And there's that. And this color
on here is so cl. Like, this, to me, is
classic West Coast. It's got that
kind of caramely color thing going on.
Yeah.
>> Dave (26:23):
And it's. It's. It's got enough sweetness
in it to balance out those
hops are not overwhelming. But the hops,
like the jump from 8%
cosmic little thing to
9.2% as far as, like, can
I taste it? Oh, yeah. 9.2%.
>> Julianna (26:44):
It's.
>> Dave (26:45):
It's there. Right. But also, I think
part of that, too, is the body of
some of the malts that go into the body of Cosmic Little Thing.
And the. The way the hops are done
shield you a little bit more.
Whereas the the
atomic torpedo is meant
to hit you like an atomic torpedo,
(27:07):
not to blast. This is not a pallet
burner by any means. And it doesn't blast you out
or anything like that. But it's like a
very bright, punchy,
big ipa and you. You
get every bit of that.
>> Julianna (27:23):
You do. But, uh, don't you feel like there's
a little. There's a sweetness on it to almost
soften that?
>> Dave (27:31):
And that's what I'm saying.
>> Julianna (27:31):
Yeah, yeah. This is the. The soften. The alpha acids.
>> Dave (27:34):
It's not like back in the day.
>> Julianna (27:36):
Oh, right.
>> Dave (27:37):
When you would get like a green flash beer or something that would.
It was really good. But you're like, I'm not going to
be able to taste anything for, like, two days.
>> Julianna (27:45):
Yeah. You're like drinking mega water.
>> Dave (27:47):
This is a flavor Accentuator. And again, it's another
good beer to pair with food and. Because
you definitely want to eat some stuff to soak some of this up, you
know?
>> Julianna (27:56):
Yeah.
>> Dave (27:56):
Have something on your stomach. But it's. But
it's a super tasty beer. It's
very. Not aggressive, but
assertive. And I really like
where this beer is going. It's a. It's really
nice beer. I don't know that I've had the regular. I think I
have had regular Torpedo.
>> Julianna (28:15):
Yeah, we've had the regular Torpedo.
>> Dave (28:17):
This is definitely ramped up. And. And it's not.
And it's good because, like, the regular Torpedo is
good and sometimes when they try to amp up a beer
and just make an imperial or super version of it,
they just mess it up. This is just a really good
beer.
>> Julianna (28:32):
Yeah, this is a really good beer. And what are we going
to rate? The Atomic Torpedo?
>> Dave (28:38):
Should we continue the theme?
>> Julianna (28:40):
I think we should. And we are going to rate this
a four.
Uh,
yeah, I think the balance on this one is.
I just.
>> Dave (28:51):
Legit, man.
>> Julianna (28:52):
Yeah, Yeah. I mean, obviously dialed in.
We'll be back with more in just a minute.
Welcome back, everyone. So today's
episode has been about mix
packs, variety packs, whatever you want to call them.
And today we've been talking about the heavy hitter IPA
(29:13):
Variety pack from Sierra Nevada Brewing Company in
Chico, California, and Mills Creek, North
Carolina. So
before the breaks leading up to this,
we've had a 7.2% double
IPA, an 8% double
IPA. Granted, one was hazy, one was not.
(29:33):
And then the.
>> Dave (29:35):
I think it's arguable that one was hazy.
>> Julianna (29:38):
Okay, fair. And then the Torpedo
Imperial IPA at 9.2%. And
now we are going to get to the
the Hot Bullet Imperial IP
Magnum edition.
(29:58):
Yes. Hop heads are rejoicing
everywhere. This is A Limited release
9.5% ABV.
The mighty Magnum hot packs
this edition of Hot Bullet with
behemoth flavors of grapefruit, orange rind and
pine resin. This thing's a force, but
it's also fleeting. So stock up now or miss
(30:20):
out. Well, okay.
>> Dave (30:22):
Nice piny aroma.
>> Julianna (30:24):
So. Right. And I think the underlying
theme of all four of these beers is
like the pine citrusy kind of.
I mean, yes, there's a little variation with tropical, but
I, uh, think these.
>> Dave (30:38):
Are all, you know, really
true to Sierra Nevada
and like, what they do. Yes. And
yeah, they have a brewery in Mill Creek, North Carolina. But
there's not like there's a, uh, North
Carolina IPA or whatever. I guess there could
be, but these are like, you know,
west coast beers, you know, or at least a West coast
(31:00):
take on beers. And
um, and they're also
a study in how you
make really big beer.
>> Julianna (31:12):
And you still have flavor
and make.
>> Dave (31:15):
It enjoyable and balance it. Because
as you scale this ABV up,
the balance on these IPAs can
go askew
very easily. Either too malty,
that the hops don't keep up, or people will tend to
over hop them and just blast
(31:36):
you out. And you, you don't really enjoy the
beer fully.
>> Julianna (31:40):
Sure.
>> Dave (31:40):
You know, or they just try to make the body so big and
it's just juicy and you're like,
you get so full halfway through it,
you know, And I don't like, we've, we've sampled,
you know, three already. We're sampling the fourth one and it's really
big. It's the biggest beer. I'm not
really feeling overly full,
(32:01):
you know, probably got a little buzz, you know, a little
happy boy, you know, But I
mean, that's to be expected too, though.
>> Julianna (32:08):
Oh, sure, sure.
>> Dave (32:10):
But I don't feel like, oh, God, I'm so bloated
or, you know, whatever. And we're not drinking the full beer. But
still, you know, with some of those 9%
beers, you get that way, you know.
>> Julianna (32:20):
Yeah, yeah. And it's, it's really easy to like,
taste the alcohol and like, forget about what the actual
beer tastes like. But for this one being as high
as it is. Yes. There's a little bit of
alcoholness to it.
>> Dave (32:32):
A little bit.
>> Julianna (32:32):
But it's subtle.
>> Dave (32:33):
Yeah.
>> Julianna (32:34):
And it's not. And you're tasting hops
and you're tasting malt.
>> Dave (32:39):
Mhm.
>> Julianna (32:40):
And it's very, it's
approachable for what it is, you know.
>> Dave (32:45):
Hm.
>> Julianna (32:46):
Um, and I, I'm really impressed by that
because I was thinking, oh, gosh, we're in trouble
here with this one.
>> Dave (32:53):
But now, does this give you hope for
someone to produce, uh, an imperial
Russian stout mix pack?
>> Julianna (33:02):
No.
>> Dave (33:04):
Of all 12% beers?
>> Julianna (33:07):
No.
>> Dave (33:07):
I'm waiting for JW lease to make
the, uh, harvest ale, barley wine
variety pack. Variety pack?
>> Julianna (33:15):
Yeah, uh, like circa
2002 to 2010.
>> Dave (33:20):
If you did a 24 year vertical
of barley wines in a variety pack. J.W. lee's
Listen to me right now. I just thought of that.
All right, I'm speaking directly to you.
>> Julianna (33:31):
Oh, my gosh. I can't have to make one. Expensive.
That would be.
>> Dave (33:34):
They've only got to make one.
>> Julianna (33:35):
Okay, send it to me and give it to Dave.
>> Dave (33:38):
Yes, I will be buried with it.
>> Julianna (33:41):
Okay, fair, fair.
Um, what are you thinking about rating this
beer?
>> Dave (33:47):
I don't know. What are you thinking about reading this beer?
>> Julianna (33:51):
M. Yeah,
I'm thinking a three.
>> Dave (33:57):
Oh, really? What detracts from this
one for the.
>> Julianna (34:01):
From the other just because of the high abv?
>> Dave (34:04):
I mean, I don't see that as detractor, but. No,
I'll go with you.
>> Julianna (34:08):
Okay. No.
>> Dave (34:09):
Right. Or not?
>> Julianna (34:10):
You want to go forward?
>> Dave (34:11):
Well, I just feel like I, you know, I think they did a great
job with it.
>> Julianna (34:14):
Okay, so.
>> Dave (34:15):
Okay.
>> Julianna (34:16):
All right. Four it is then.
>> Dave (34:17):
I got your backs here, Nevada.
>> Julianna (34:22):
It's just a lot.
>> Dave (34:23):
It is, but I mean, I'm a lot. And does that mean you
would rate me less?
>> Julianna (34:28):
Well, no.
>> Dave (34:30):
Well, see, there you go.
>> Julianna (34:31):
Fair, fair.
>> Dave (34:32):
Now I like this.
>> Julianna (34:34):
What would you have with this beer?
>> Dave (34:38):
I don't, man.
>> Julianna (34:40):
Um, I mean, are we
talking like a big four course dinner, five course dinner with it?
>> Dave (34:45):
I. I
think this is, you know, maybe like a
big roast beef sandwich, some pizza,
anything. Like some good pub food, you
know? Yeah, I think I would have that because. Or something
spicy because this beer would kind of
cut through that spice.
>> Julianna (35:04):
Okay. Yeah, yeah, sure, sure. But I
think, um, it's. It's well done.
It's just for me in my taste,
it's just gonna be. It's a lot, you know what I mean?
>> Dave (35:15):
Yeah, I mean, and I think this is, you
know, that the one beer out of the pack where
the, the main hop head may have to
tackle this section of the.
>> Julianna (35:28):
Sure.
>> Dave (35:28):
And let the other guys handle the other part.
>> Julianna (35:31):
Yeah. Handle the lighter. Yeah, yeah. Because over. I mean,
for me, overall, I'm not gonna rate,
uh, a 9, 10, 11 IP,
like IPA ish
style beer. Really? High. Anyways, just
because I'm like, is it
necessary really?
>> Dave (35:50):
Well, I mean, I think you think back to, like, 90
minute IPA and some of the 120
minute. Some of the really monsters, and
I think the ones that do it really well are few and far
between.
>> Julianna (36:03):
Sure.
>> Dave (36:03):
You know, but I could tell you, if I had to
guess and poke inside your brain,
cosmic little thing was probably the one that you
sort of identified with M. Most. Yeah.
>> Julianna (36:16):
Yeah. Although I did like the Torpedo, too.
>> Dave (36:19):
Yeah, yeah, I think that one. I mean, I don't think there was
a bad beer in the.
>> Julianna (36:23):
No, no, no. And so, okay, rating this,
like, looking at it at the store,
picking it up, having that expectation. Um,
the Sierra Nevada expectation, if you will. And
then now trying these. Are you happy?
>> Dave (36:37):
Yeah. I mean, I think if you think about it,
that pack, you probably had a buck fifty a beer.
>> Julianna (36:43):
That's crazy. Especially for all that hops.
>> Dave (36:45):
Never gonna find that anywhere.
>> Julianna (36:48):
No, no, no, no. And
the fact that they're in cans, they're gonna last
a little bit. I mean. Yes. It's better to keep it cooler
than keep it warm.
>> Dave (36:58):
Yeah.
>> Julianna (36:58):
But I mean, that pretty much goes with, like, any beer, really.
Um, but I think that,
like, over a long weekend, I mean,
you're hanging out with your homebrew or beer buddies.
This is a perfect.
>> Dave (37:13):
I think you could have this variety pack for a few weeks,
you know?
>> Julianna (37:16):
Yeah.
>> Dave (37:17):
And put it in your rotation with your light loggers
and check pilsners.
>> Julianna (37:21):
Yeah, sure. And kind of balance out. Yeah. Uh, the
light of the pilsner with this and. Yeah, yeah,
yeah. I could. I could see that happening.
>> Dave (37:28):
Definitely think this is worth someone
who likes hops picking up.
>> Julianna (37:33):
Yeah.
>> Dave (37:34):
Or if you love someone who likes hops, pick it up for
them.
>> Julianna (37:37):
Oh, totally. Totally. Yeah.
And Sierra. And Sierra Nevada is one of
those breweries that is,
um, classic.
>> Dave (37:47):
If there's a safe bet in buying beer,
they're one of them. Sierra Nevada is probably a pretty safe bet.
>> Julianna (37:54):
Yeah. And with their distribution, you can get it
almost anywhere. Exactly. And that's what
makes it special. So, overall, what
would you rate the variety pack itself?
>> Dave (38:06):
I would give the variety pack itself a five.
>> Julianna (38:09):
Perfect.
Well, that's gonna do it for today. What do you
think about that? Um. Good Old Boy Dave.
