(00:09):
Good day, good night, andwelcome to Soccer Today magazine. I'm keV
Laramie and today we'll be breaking downBelgium and Canada from a statistical point of
view, and of course we willlook at the starting eleven and breakdown all
the results from Group F. Butthis is just one part of the show
today. On this extensive, exhaustiveGame Day one breakdown, we'll look at

(00:33):
every single game of Match Day onein the World Cup. We would also
break down every single group from tomto bottom and what's at stakes for the
second match. We'll also talk aboutRonaldo going into history. We'll have a
couple of different segments on the beautifulgame over the last couple of weeks,
but it's going to be a veryin depth show, talk about John Herdman,
Davies, penalty miss who will breakdown. Of course, also my

(00:56):
top five after Game one. Atthe end of the show, give you
my top five favorites to win theWorld Cup based on eye test, statistical
tests, and of course how theylooked and how they played in Game Day
one or two, depending on whichteam. But as we started this game,
I think it's important to remind ourselvesof the overall game play in the

(01:18):
overall field of seeing Canada at theWorld Cup for the first time while in
my lifetime being thirty eight years old, I was two in nineteen eighty six.
I do not remember Canada at Mexicoeighty six. But let's look at
Belgium Canada. Let's break down rightnow. One nothing it was, I

(01:42):
won, nothing lost for Canada, still looking for its first ever goal at
the World Cup. Belgium Canada tookplace on November twenty third. I haven't
been at least stadium known as ada Ryan Stadium. Also, here are
what I want to highlight from thesenumbers. Twenty two for Canada, only
three on target, which is thesame as Belgium, but twenty two shots

(02:05):
now expect. The goals varies dependingon which website, which data aggregator you
take it from. This is froma well known source. Two point sixty
three is the consensus. Some placeshave three point two or something. I
will go at two sixty three andto me, that's a big number and
the score line should have been differentchances for crosses sixteen. Another indicator of

(02:30):
the pressure Canada was putting on Belgiumis the clearances here twenty seven clearances by
Belgium. That is a whole lot, and that is a lot of clearance
for Belgium to do. Canada wasable to put pressure and find ways to
put Belgium in trouble, but itwasn't enough. Couple of mischances, couple

(02:53):
of well one miss penalty will getthere. But according to my own calculations,
chances for for Canada those are notjust the big chances, also scoring
chances, pure scoring chances for forCanada. One for Belgium, and they
took advantage of it. The onemoment of madness for Canada and brilliance for

(03:14):
Belgium. Let's look the players thatstarted the game for Canada. It was
a different starting eleven and anticipated mypreferred eleven was a bit different. Junior
Whola was not there. You hadSamadi Kuba instead of all founder Davis and
a founder Davis higher, which Ithink we will see my prefer eleven on
Sunday versus Croatia. Davis little higherup top next to David Buchan and maybe

(03:38):
back in the middle. But RichieLarreya did play very well at that spot.
It'll be interesting to see how theymanaged that situation. You want to
find a place probably for Carl Larenon the starting eleven against Croatia. Having
a attacking three of Davis, Davidand Laren, or Davis, Laren and

(03:58):
David and have Buchanan maybe on thebench for this one could make sense.
But this was the starting eleven againstBelgium. Let's start with the goalkeepers and
make our way forward. Matt Boyan, the legend gray sweatpants himself was a
net against Belgium. Kamal Miller,Stephen Victoria and Alistair Johnston were your three

(04:23):
men backline. Alster Johnston linked withCeltic in Europe in Scotland the biggest team
in Scotland. I'm sorry Rangers fansif you're listening. Celtic is the biggest
team in Scotland. Falso Davies orStacio, Hutchinson and Larreya. That's what
it surprises. Word to Seal founderDavies at this position. I kind of

(04:44):
enjoyed having him a little higher uptop, but this does make sense to
have the overlap possibilities where holats onthat side and the three strikers that were
playing against Belgium, he had JuniorHolt Jonathan David into John Buchanan. We
we'll break down Jonathan David's game alittle later when we talk about the David
Davies penalty controversy. If there isa controversy, we will talk about that

(05:05):
in just a second, as wenow continue to look at the starting eleven
for Belgium, this time against Canada, because let's not forget this is a
group f we will probably need tohave results from other players other teams here
to help Canada move on. Tibocabest goalkeeper in net was goalie for Belgium

(05:26):
Vertagen and London Docker then darker whereyour back line Carrasco, vicell Tilliman's and
Kestang or your midfield. And forthe strikers for Belgium you had Dain Hazard,
Matt Bachoi, Bachoi who of coursemiss Batcho who's taken over for Melolukaku
injured. We'll miss the first twogames for sure. Hopefully he'll be back

(05:49):
for the last game in the groupstage for Belgium or not. Bachoi scored
and Kevin Debrun. Speaking of KevinDebroun, who will break down his numbers
in just a minute, Well whynot just go there right now? Let's
talk about Kevin de Bruin as we'retalking about Belgium and how well I wasn't
impressed by how Canada was able tomuzzle him. Look at these numbers.

(06:11):
Ain't nothing impressive here by maybe thebest midfield during the entire world. Ninety
minutes played, seventy one percent passingaccuracy. Nothing to grade there. Expected
assists that's very low for Kevin deBruin. He usually has point five point
six, if not higher per gamewith Manchester City, even with the national
team. Here, zero point twentysix expected assists. Terrible game for Kevin

(06:35):
de Bruin. From that perspective,X goal and expected assists point thirty seven
means he will only have influence ona game every three games for a goal
that is not Kevin de brun numberstwo shots, one on target, six
crosses and four key passes. Butthose numbers are not indicative of a great

(06:56):
game. Those numbers tell me thatCanada was able to stifle Belgium, and
that is important because we're gonna haveCroatia upnext and Canada will need to stifle
Dimdio. They'll need to stifle Modrich, They'll need to stifle the attacking parishitch
and more, it might not beas hard as people anticipate. A lot
of people think, and even someCanadian players have been talking about how Croatia

(07:19):
might be better than Belgium. Idon't think so. Croatia age really quickly.
They hit a wall, and yesthey've been playing well, but that
wall will be very quickly coming whenthey played Canada on Sunday, and I
have a feeling, yes, Ihave a feeling that Canada will play very
well against the old legs of Croatia. Maybe it's wishful thinking, what I

(07:40):
do believe Canada has the upper handagainst a team like Croatia that has a
still mentality, a still tactical wellawareness over the last couple of years.
And I don't think that the successof Russia twenty eighteen will I'll have a
correlation with the success in twenty twentytwo. The world have changed a whole

(08:01):
lot since then from multiple perspective, and I'll depict the players that will have
to say something about it. AndI think Canada has a chance to upset
Croatia literally outright by winning or atleast getting a draw, at least getting
a goal and getting a draw andleaving it to December first against Morocco.
We've talked about Jonathan David, We'vetalked about Alfonso Davies. Of course we

(08:26):
have seen well, there's a controversywith the penalty. There's a controversy with
the fact that Alfonso Davies took itand let nobody else hit it. But
to me, there should have beenJonathan David. And of course it's easy
to say after the fact all thepure strikers should have gone for it.
But at a statistician, as amathematics aficionado, penalties are a long term

(08:54):
game. It's not one. It'sa long term You need your striker to
do an all the time and overa period of time you have a very
high successful rate, and that's what'sreally necessary here. If I'm John Herdman,
from now on, it's always JonathanDavid, even if he misses it,
he's doing him because over a longstretch of time, over multiple penalties,

(09:16):
you will have a higher percentage, you will have a high percentage of
success rate, and that what countswhen it comes to scoring goals. But
if we look at Davies a bitmore in detail and look at his entire
game that he did have against Belgium, because yes, it was a good
game, but it wasn't necessarily perfect. Let's take a look. So here

(09:39):
are his numbers against Belgium ninety minutesplayed, Passing accuracy eighty one percent point
seventy nine, expected goals very high, very good X goals and expected assists
of point ninety one which is almostone, which is almost a goal which
he almost influenced by himself. Thecreation of entire goal duels won twenty seven
percent. That needs to be better. It needs to be high. If

(10:00):
he is working and playing as aleft wing back or left midfielder, this
needs to be a whole lot higher. If he is purely a striker instead
of Jonathan Junior next game, thenthat twenty seven percent ain't as bad.
But if he is used as aleft back or left wing back, his
duels one percentage must be higher.False commit founs committed three key pass his

(10:22):
three here the important aspect he's ona yellow card already. One more yellow
card for Alfonso Davies will mean thathe will be missing the next game.
So Alfonso Davies needs to either geta yellow against Croatia and then miss Morocco

(10:43):
or have to manage his playing style, and that is not good news heading
into a game against Croatia where hemight be needed to defend and track back
and then you can easily get asecond yellow. That's not ideal. So
a lot of people were wanting tocompare the two numbers compared to two players.
So let's do just that. Let'scompare their first game. And we've

(11:07):
seen Alfonso Davies, We've seen thenumbers. Let's now look at Jonathan David.
You're in the numbers for Jonathan Davidninety minute, sixty seven percent,
one point zero three expected goals. As much as we talk about Alfonso davis
miss penalty and how that could havechanged the game, regardless of that,

(11:31):
Jonathan David should have scored. JonathanDavid's game was good, but zero shots
on target after seven a tenth songgoal. That is not good enough.
You need to be better defensive pressureapplied. He finished first of the entire
game with sixty six times he putpressure on defense. That's a lot with
the ball, that's a lot.He had a great game, but he

(11:54):
couldn't finish. Was he nervous? Was it the same thing for Davies.
That's hard to tell, but thesenumbers do not lie seven shots zero and
target expect the goals of one pointzero three. It should have been better.
It should have been a goal regardlessof Davy's penalty. Jonathan David should
have scored. When you have oneand over expect to goal. At a
World Cup level, when you're atop striker in the world, you need

(12:16):
to bury. Yes, you needto bury almost every single opportunity as you
get because if not, well, one more opportunity on the other side,
like Belgium showed us, and yousee Canada with a big disparity when it
comes to the score and they lostone. Neil. We've talked about their
starting eleven, We've talked about Daviesand David, and there's a chance to

(12:37):
Laron starts the next game. Butwhen I look at the bench, and
when I look at the possible influenceof players on this team later in the
game, I find that there's yes, a lot of offensive possibility when you
have Kyle Larron on the bench. As we've seen here, East mal Cone
was used very well. We'll seeif Mark antony K is used in the

(12:58):
next game. Samady Kubay will hestart on. But the attacking options are
really far and few between on thebench to be quite fair. So if
Calaron starts oil, it has tobe on the bench. Is oilt you're
offensive off the bench contribution, that'sa question, and that's where I'm asking.
As much as we love Canada,we love the starting eleven, we

(13:20):
have to be pragmatic here. Thebench is not our French. We do
not have a ton of attacking poweron the bench and its decision for the
starting eleven will make a big differenceversus the result of the game. And
now you're gonna have fatigue, You'regonna have all these things coming into play
for the second game, and we'llsee if the bench can be used a

(13:41):
bit better by John Herdman. Butlet's face it, the bench is very
full with bodies, but still verythin when it comes to attacking experience at
the high level. We've talked aboutJohn Herdman, and John Herdman has been
a making headline across the world overthe last couple of days. Let's look

(14:03):
at what actually what he said.I just told them they belong here and
we're going to go and f Croatianext. It's as simple as that,
and of course Croatia has ran withit headlines across the world saying, oh,
it's disrespectful, it's all that.Who's been talking about Davies penalties in
the last two days in the famousworld of mel Lastman. Nobody, because

(14:28):
John Herman has decided to put theonus of controversy on his own shoulders,
diverting the attention that Alfonso Davies wouldhave gotten and putting him on him.
Of course, he was asked,oh was this on purpose? John?
Did you do this on purpose? It is a spur of the moment,
and the pragmatical leader John Herman isanswered, of course, it was a
spur of the moment for breaking itdown. Now this feels like a yes,

(14:54):
it was thought of on the spurof the moment with the result of
the game. But it was amad a brilliant way to divert attention and
to put it all on him.He can take it, he can take
the criticism and he can be thatshield John Herdman, the shield for his
top player's top star, able togive a little bit of shadow under the

(15:16):
bright sunlight of the World Cup toAlfonso Davies, giving him time to recoup,
recover and rinse and repeat for gamenumber two. Jonathan David as well.
No real, I would say negativefeelings when it comes to this game
are lingering because Canada's brave, theycaught the headlines everywhere and they could do

(15:37):
better. But of course John Hermanhas decided to deflect the attention put it
on him, and you know whatit might be what Canada needed will no
more on Sunday when we look atwhat he means. But with that result,
and of course we know who iswhere in Group F. Let's look

(15:58):
at the standings and group after ofcourse Croatia Morocco. It was a Neil
Neil drop between Moraitian Crocco, Moroccoand Croatia, Mowatia and Croaco. That
sounds like a really good TV show, Moaysia and Crorocco. Here are your
Group F standings. Top of thegroup is Belgium, Croatia second, Morocco

(16:19):
third, in Canada fourth. Rightnow with a minus one differential, we've
talked about Morocco and Croatia. Wecan look right now. Well, if
first you want to look at potentialscenarios for Canada here okay, Canada wins
against Croatia. Canadas three points.Morocco loses to Belgium. Belgium's got sex,

(16:40):
then second is Canada. You haveMorocco and Croatia. So there's a
way to be talked too after justSunday night, Well no more when it
comes down to break that down. But let's look at this Morocco Croatia game,
because this was maybe the most wellfruitless game of the entire group stage

(17:00):
var you had eight shots, twoon target from Morocco, five and two
for Croatia. Nothing dangerous came fromCroatia. There nothing dangerous really came from
Morocco either, thirty five percent possession, but Morocco did look good in a
way. Sixty five percent possession forCroatia, passing accuracy seventy eight to eighty
five, sixteen thousand, eleven forCroatia, corners five for Croatia, zero

(17:22):
for Morocco. Brosovich did run fortwelve point forty eight kilometers in this game.
One hundred and twenty one passes forguardiol Yes, seventy sprint for ny
Sirie, and a yellow card forfor Amrabat, who will be suspended if
he gets another yellow in this competition. Let's look at the starting eleven of
Croatia for that game as we getready for the one on Sunday versus Canada.

(17:48):
I expect a very similar starting elevenfor Croatia on Sunday. Modrich of
course, Bischich, Kamaich, Vleshich. Anybody that finishes it will be there
also, so Sa Garrio, Lovrenand Uranovic. Maybe you will have some
defensive substitutions. Maybe one Sosa mightnot be playing in the next game.

(18:11):
We will know more on Sunday whenwe have the lineup of Croatia. Now
Morocco. Morocco's lineup versus Croatia,Sofian and Buffal a name to keep in
mind and the series. Also,he is their best striker. Akim Ziek,
who has been rumored to go toAssi Milan is also top as your

(18:34):
attacking right striker. Mazraoui, SaisAggard and Achimi where your back line bono
and not bono of YouTube and notbano of TFC. It's just another bono.
Amala, Amargabat and Hunahi where yourmid yield for Morocco. But that's

(18:56):
not just what I want to talkabout. I also want to bring you
to Luca Madrissa's match because to me, Luka Modric is a very important player
for this team. And we willsee. Here is numbers against Morocco.
Nothing impressive, to be quite honest. Yes, ninety percent passing accuracy,
one hundred and seven touches seventy sevenpass completed, four crosses completed, three

(19:19):
long balls. While long balls couldbe a problem, we saw Canada had
difficulties handling them, so maybe thatwill be a problem against Canada. Ground
duels one, three interceptions, threeaerial duels. One. A way to
be Croatia will be to put theball in the air and use the height
of Canadians versus the smaller height ofCroatians, if that is possible. But

(19:42):
that is what's to come. Thatis an ex opponent for Canada is Croatia.
As we transport ourselves to Sunday atKhalifa International Stadium, eleven am,
Eastern Canada, Croatia for maybe thesecond spot in Group F. That could
be really fun and that could happenreally quickly. We'll take a short break.

(20:06):
When we come back, we willbreak down all the results in all
the games from Group one will gameone in GABE two. We will also
break down all the group standings. We'll talk about Ronaldo at the World Cup.
He is of course now in historyat being the first male player to
score at five straight World Cups. And we will also look at my top

(20:27):
five teams after game one, myfavorites to win the tournament. After this
short break, and we're back onSoccer Today magazine. I'm Karl laren May.

(21:07):
Thanks for joining me, Thanks forlistening to this beautiful podcast. If
you want to reach myself and maybebook me on your show, on your
TV show, I've been on CDDNews Channel a whole lot lately. I've
been doing radio hits across the countryfrom coast to coast, and you can
reach me at Kevin on Soccer atgmail dot com. It is time to

(21:30):
look at the different scores across Groupeight to f two g heading into this
amazing World Cup that we're all on. Let's look at some of the results
that we have seen after game one, so we'll go back to the first
game. Of course, Qatar EcuadorEquadoor won their second game two. What
any impressive team so far? Englandwon six two then nil nil in the

(21:52):
second game against USA sitting Out theNetherlands. Netherlands it beat sitting Out two
nil in the first game and theywere not in bread seventy second, but
they impressed me enough in the firstone to be in my top five spoiler
will look at it later. USAwells and you see all the results here.
The biggest upsets I want to talkabout, of course is Saudi Arabia
Argentina. They're playing Poland in thesecond game, so we'll see how they

(22:14):
fare against Poland. For Saudi Arabia, but they can get out of the
group maybe for the second time onlyin their history. Saudi Arabia is really
the upset of the tournament so faragainst Argentina. Another upset to me,
well, it was really a bigupset is Japan Germany. Big victory for
Japan coming from behind. There werea one goal down and they be two
one. And by the famous ruleof three, Canada be Japan in a

(22:37):
friendly before the World Cup. SoCanada is better than Germany because Japan better
than Germany. So that's the famousrule of three. Spain seven, Costa
Rica zero. That was quite quitea result. Switzerland being professional against Cameroon
one nail Uruguay Korea, South Koreanil nail Portugal. Ghana was three two.
Portugal did not look that great though, I'll be quite honest with you.

(23:00):
They look like the good offense, but they also looked like a very
porous defense. Brazil looked amazing. It could have been ten to zero against
Serbia, and to me, theyare a team that looked amazingly well run,
well oiled to well oil machine theyoga buonito as they will be looking
to win a record six World Cupthis time around. Here are some of

(23:22):
the games from group stage. Matchtwo that I've already taken place. Yesterday
was Whales Iran. Big win forIran to Nail. I am rooting for
n Qatar sending, especially what's goingon the country. It's fun to see
the players rally behind the people sendinggal three Qatar Wan Qatar is eliminated.
First team ever to be eliminated, first host team ever to be eliminated.

(23:45):
After two games of the World Cup. Netherlands Ecuadora one. One big surprise
by the Netherlands in Ecuador. Equadoraplay really well. They will be coming
out of the group and are afavorite to continue their run England USA on
nil nil draw. You can catchmy TV hit on CTV News on my
social media if you want to havemy more and my thoughts on that game,
and you can see the rest ofthe games for Group stage match day

(24:10):
two. As we now move onto the groups and we will look at
some of the results in Group Ato start. So after two games,
the Netherlands are top of Group Awith four points, a goal differential of

(24:30):
two identical numbers for Netherlands and Ecuador. Senegal third they could technically still qualify,
but it's not looking too good forSenegal unfortunately, and Qatar fourth already
eliminated from this tournament. Let's moveon to Group B as we look at

(24:51):
the standings and Group B after gamenumber two two games play in England still
top of the group with four points, having won one and draw one six
goals for two goals against a differentialof four. Iran is second of the
group with three points, one winand one loss. They have four goals
scored six goals against minus two.USA our third, but USA will play
Iran. If USA beats Iran,USA will have five points and will guarantee

(25:17):
a police out of the group theUN The United States of America does hold
their destiny in their hands and Walesare very close to being eliminated. Anything
else than a win will spell theend of Wales at this World Cup.
Let's now look at Group C groupsee Saudi Arabia, Poland, Mexico,

(25:38):
Argentina. Games are taking place Saturdayfor this group. But after game number
one, Saudi Arabia was top,Poland second, Mexico third, in Argentina
fourth. But it's not going tobe over for Argentina. I have a
little bit of an inkling that they'llpat from Wall in their next two games
and maybe even win the group. It's not over yet, but Argentina definitely

(26:00):
under pressure after game number one.As we moved to Group D. Group
D French, Tunisia, Denmark inAustralia. Australia didn't get a win earlier
today, so they do have threepoints now. But this is the graphic
was made before the end of thatgame, so you can see this after
game number one. Is your GroupD standings with France, Tunisia, Denmark
in Australia after game numb bur one. Let's move now to Group E.

(26:26):
Yes, Group E I really likeGroup E. Spain might be my favorite
team the whole tournament so far.How they've been playing that game was impressive,
the best differential in the tournament sofar. Spain, Japan, Germany,
Costa Rica. It's gonna be atop C TURV group. Germany will
try to well at least save faceand maybe qualify and get out of the

(26:52):
group. But Japan or impressive Spainer. I don't see them finishing outside of
the first of the group, soit will be an uphill battle for Germany.
It's gonna between Japan and Germany, and who knows if Japan Japan might
be coming out of this group.Let's continue our look at the standings or
Group GEE, Brazil amazing performance,Switzerland, second, Cameroon and Serbia.

(27:18):
That is your Group G, andthen the Group H. Let's finish the
group standings with Group H. Portugal. They've looked all right. I don't
think they looked that good. Honestly. Ghana was able to score a couple
and that's very interesting. But theone thing that's important and funny year is
looking at Portugal. While Ronaldo scoredfrom an a penalty spot for a fifth

(27:42):
straight World Cup. Christiana Ronaldo hasscored, and Christiano Ronaldo has become the
fifth man, no, sorry, the first man in the world let score
at five straight World Cup. Acouple other players Mata of Brazil done it
on the women's side and Christie inSaint Clair have also done it from the
women's side, but when we lookon the men's side, it's the first

(28:04):
time a man does it and it'sChris Shanna Ronaldo doing it. And let's
look at Chris Shanna Ronaldo and hishistory at the World Cup. So he
scored eight goals with the one hedid against Ghana in history at the FIFA
World Cup. His first World Cupwas in two thousand and six in Germany

(28:26):
and he stored against Iran in SouthAfrica in twenty ten. He scored against
North Korea in a group stage Braziltwenty fourteen, he's scored against Ghana,
so that's his first goal against Ghanabefore the one earlier this week. And
then the one game in Russia twentyeighteen against Spain where he scored three goals
of course, has rebelled him tothe amazing record that you see here,

(28:52):
and against Morocco also he scored inRussia twenty eighteen and in Qatar against Ghana.
That's eight goals in eighteen appearances forCorshano Ronaldo at five straight World Cup
and once again the first player, first male player in history to score at
five different World Cup. And thisbrings me to the ps dads Stars,

(29:17):
the main event, the main dish, the dish of the night, the
entree. My top five heading intogame number two, these are my favorite
team to raise the trophy to standin the Confettis in just a few weeks.
No surprise here, Spain is mytop team after game one. Brazil

(29:41):
is second. They look great.Hopefully they can play well still without Naymar
who will be missing the next game, maybe even the third one with an
ankle injury. England third. Yes, they did not impress me though in
their second game, but this wasdone after the first, so they're still
there and to me in the threeline and can still get something out of

(30:02):
this beautiful game. France, especiallybecause England's gonna play well, so it
can be very fun definancial group.France will be very impressive once again for
one without really playing well. Francecould be the first team in a while
to win it back to back andthe Netherlands. I was impressed by the
London's a well managed team that isgoing to grow. And yes one one

(30:26):
wasn't the best result in game two, but I think this Netherlands team can
be dangerous and that's why I havethem at that spot, because I think
they can be a very dangerous teamin the end of this World Cup.

New episodes every Monday and Friday. Your support means the world to me and I don’t take it for granted — click the follow button and leave a review to help us spread the love with On Purpose.
