(02:38):

Stevie, I'm doing very well, thank you. And I have to
tell you it's pronounced soulful them themokay, yeah, French word women Yeah
exactly. Yeah. I mean Iheard it nash both ways. So ye.

(03:04):
But yeah. But but but firstoff, tell me a little bit
about how you and Cheryl got together. We shown I we we both lived
in the same well Pittsburgh area, not in the same exact area Pittsburgh.
But we were doing a blues womenin Blues concert and I was asked to
sing for the concert. And Ididn't know anyone at this rehearal soul and

(03:29):
none of the musicians and like Isaid, Pittsburgh small. But I didn't
know these musicians at all. AndI remember I chose a song to do.
I think I was last at rehearsalto to do my song, I
believe, And I was listening tothe guitar player. I was listening to
shrow Us at this whole months fabulously. So Um, she heard me singing.

(03:51):
I heard her play and we saidshe said to me, she said
to the band members, actually theguys that, like I said, I
didn't know them, would they liketo be field a band around my voice?
And they all said yeah, AndCheryl called me and that was it
and we've been together ever since. So tell me a little bit about you

(04:12):
know, how you started in musicand how you started singing. Oh,
I recall singing when I was alittle My mother was musical. She had
a we always had a piano inthe house. She played piano and she
sang. I had a brother whosang, and we all sit around the
piano mama playing. We would sing. Um. I did start a little
girl group. I think I wasyour group. I was fourteen years old

(04:38):
and myself and some school friends ofminths, very close friends, school friends,
and I realized then that I enjoyedperforming. Now, they were a
little shy when they were doing it, but me, I'm all all over
the place and showing off with mysinging and dancing and have you. So
I didn't start singing professionally, Iguess, until I was in my twenties,

(05:01):
because we had to finish school.Of course, my mom wasn't gonna
have me doing all that singing andall and things like that and going out
without my getting my education first. So I started singing professionally in my twenties
and I haven't stopped, you know, between marriage to wonderful sons, I

(05:25):
kept performing. So I started backin the seventy something. Yeah, what
were some of the people that youwere looking at back in the day when
you were starting to perform, Someof the people that you were listening to?
Oh my goodness. Well, youknow, back then, I was
listening to Motown like a lot ofpeople were. And then I've started to

(05:47):
branch out, listening to Slide inthe family Stone and first I guess rock
Group, of course, and youknow, since to James Brown and all
that, and but My first Iwould say my musical influence was Stevie Wonder.
He was a kid and I sawhim, I think he was eleven

(06:08):
years old at the time, doingfingertips and said, this cheese kid is
blind and he's playing on harmoney andhe's singing and he sounds so soulful and
he was having a good time. And I thought that was something that I'd
like to do. But I startedto listen to UM Jimmie Hendrix M I

(06:29):
fell in love with him and thatopened my I guess my music brain or
heart to all different types of music. And because he just spoke to me
in a lot of ways, soI started listening to UM. I had
a lot of female influences as well. Areathing like everyone else, Gladys Night

(06:53):
and Choka Cohn and and another onewas it was a lady's name sound of
music, Julie Andrews. I lovedher voice. I it was a trained
classical voice, and I loved it, the purity of her voice. UM.
So I had a lot of alot of music that I listened to

(07:14):
and a lot of influence. Listenedto jazz and oh my gosh, fusion
funk. Now funk was Uh,something that I really enjoyed because I had
a chance to perform at to singwith funk bands and the music just spoo.

(07:34):
Yeah, so I'm all over theplace. And then then late in
life came blues and blues rock andCharl Actually, um, I was listening.
I was always I've listened to bluesbefore, but Charl put me on

(07:55):
a different, I guess better, bigger path, really getting into the blue.
So I thank her for that. She really am help me with that.
You know obviously, you know withwith your singing. You know,
your your singing has probably maturedal alittle bit. And you know, how's
it for you to kind of,you know, go into different genres,

(08:16):
sing for different genres, you know, sing for funk versus singing for like
blues and blues rock right now?And you know how's that is experience to
be able to kind of stretch yourstretch your vocal you know, vocal talents
as it were. Well, yeah, I M I use I guess I

(08:37):
take from everything that I've learned throughoutthe years that I've and and pushed to
put it all together. Um,and I want to have me to have
my own sound, I guess you'dsay, um, having that experience doing
those different types of music, genresof music actually get me in the recording

(09:01):
studio a lot, singing for otherpeople, mostly background vocals, but it
helped me round round myself, roundmyself out musically and spiritually, go figure.
But singing actually listening to different vocalists, different how they felt, how

(09:26):
they emoted there, the songs thatthey wrote or they performed, and that
has actually helped me. I guesswith everything that I've done on stage in
the recording studio, I give you, I've seen them give me their heart.

(09:52):
They the other artists, they putit all out there, themselves out
there, and I do the samething. And I think singing different types
of music actually helped me too, find my voice, to find my own
sound, my own voice. Andspeaking of the studio, tell me a
little bit about your first experiences inthe studio, and you know, obviously,
you know, being a background vocalist, you probably don't get as much,

(10:15):
you know, as much time asmaybe some of the bigger performers.
But you know, just having atthat time in the studio and have that
is that's helped out, especially youknow when you're starting to do your own
material. Ooh. Um. Well, when I started the first time I
sang in a studio trying to remember, it was a while back, a

(10:37):
friend of mine putting me on acidand try this, and I was green,
I mean really green as far aslistening to myself and recording to the
studio. I had no idea whatI was doing, but they worked with
me and I got this. Itwas a little commercial. Hum. I

(10:58):
had a chance to do a firsttime singing with somebody at my well,
my brother and I listened to myselfand my boy's son was so squeaky and
just you know, just horrible. But learning to um, to understand that
being in the studio is different thantrying to do a live show and the

(11:24):
things that you have to do differentlyvocally, breathing, Uh, they hear
everything. If you mess up,you hear everything. So that's that's always
a challenge for me, just todo that and to get proficient at it.
Um. The thing is, thetrick is for some is to sing

(11:46):
it and not have your not haveto do it a lot of times because
you try to stay on key andum that was my I had a problem
with that before, but now Ido not so, and that gets that
got me a lot of work.Um doing takes people asked me to come
in and now of people are askingme to come in and just lay feels

(12:09):
on a lot of songs, feelsyou know, a little you know,
a little this, that little sprinklingand another on a song and little icing
on a little bit of the cake. I guess you'd say. And the
thing you did just have to beright on you have to be right on
the point. So recording, Irecording was something that was, oh uh,

(12:37):
something that I always wanted to do, and I got a chance to
do it, and I've been doingit ever since. I get a lot
of calls. In fact, Ihave to say this if for a lot
a lot I feel for a lotof musicians during COVID. However, for
myself, if it wasn't for medoing a lot of studio work, I
probably would have start. I gota lot of calls to go to the

(13:01):
studio. I guess people wouldn't.I mean for our own studio, for
our own being in the studio, for our own CD as well with my
soul. We get that done duringCOVID. So yeah, yeah, a
lot of musicians that have been onmy show, have used the time to
really get an opportunity to kind ofgo and studio you write music and kind

(13:26):
of get some get some stuff outwhile you know, things are starting to
open up a little bit. Iknow here in Vegas starting to open up,
and we're gonna have pretty much fullyopened in June. I'm bringing around
June fifteenth, so we're getting alot of our artists back again. So
it's it's it's kind of um,it's kind of it's kind of an interesting
thing, I know, but thereare people have been anxious to kind of
go and perform. I believe yousaid that you you were you were performing

(13:48):
actually in the past couple of couplemonths. Correct, Yes, we have
been. We would lucky to dothat now. You know, a lot
of the venues are opening up,but they get only afford that. A
lot of them can't afford a fullband because we do have a band,
and we have our duo. Theduo has been working a lot, just

(14:09):
the two of us show them myselfhave been working a lot doing the small
venues. We had to do theCOVID protocol, you know, wear your
mask on stage. We didn't haveto and a lot of people were hiring
here in Pittsburgh. I guess somepeople wanted some kind of normal people wanted
to hear music, and they didn't. A lot of us took it for

(14:33):
grant. A lot of people tookthe music business for granted until they realized
there was no music going on andpeople wanted them. We have to hear
some music. Oh, we're sohappy that we needed music. We need
it well. We were happy toprovide that. I felt bad for the
larger bands because I have to.I will say this last year when it

(14:56):
really hit all of our the showsthat we had all booked, we're gone
and just dried up, of courselike everybody else's. But within the past
few months, I would say maybestarting I'll say January, maybe in this
December, but mostly we've had smallit's been slow increments of venues opening up,

(15:18):
and we've had a chance to performa lot of them, a lot
of the wineries. You have alot of wineries in the Pittsburgh area and
outside Pittsburgh, and we've been doinga lot of wineries. People are looking
for music, and we've last weekwe opened for a a pap of it.

(15:39):
If you're familiar with her. Sheis a fantastic international artists and she
was here in the area and weopened for her. We're opening for SHANEA.
Steel in August. We're doing bluesfestivals and festivals are coming back,

(16:00):
so we've had a chance. Wewere so we're not rusty, let's put
it that way. It's something youknow, that's the dust to the rust
off like maybe two months ago,so we're good. Now we're boiled again,
so we're ready just to get outthere and keep on doing our thing.

(16:21):
You know. Tell me a littlebit about the process you guys had
with the with the album and youknow, you know, making up the
songs and all that as well.I mean, how was it, how
was it working? Kind of songwritingwise, with with with with Cheryl Syl
Schryl is an amazing an amazing writerand guitarist, amazing um and I love

(16:45):
the way she writes and as beingfriends, we've been I guess performing and
friends for maybe five years now.I mean we're really good close friends and
with a love with another artist, his name is Mark Buyers. He actually
wrote a couple of songs and he'sactually on one of the songs with me.

(17:08):
And he's I mean he co wrotesome of these. The Shirld did
the bulk of them. Now itis well with my soul, as you
know, the intro and the outro, and that is a Him, it's
a traditional Him. And we cameup with that concept just being down in
Georgia and we were in a shopand we just kept seeing this, it
is well with my soul and said, that is beautiful, and I was

(17:33):
aware of the Him. I knewwhat it was about and going through all
the things that we've gone through asfar as finally getting this CD on our
own, because we did have aCD previous with my band is Stevie Wellens
band, and it went well,it was okay, but we knew it

(17:53):
was time to step it up alittle bit. And when we saw that,
that realized that's the thing. Wego through all these childs and tripulations,
but we come back to um,the spiritual thing about our hearts and
no matter what happens, it's stillokay. My soul is all right.

(18:18):
And try to convey that something isnot just peace, but it's gonna be
okay. That's for everyone. It'sgonna be all right, no matter what's
going on it, it'll be okay. Um. The writing with Sheryl,
Like I said, I interpret herher writing if they speak to me,

(18:41):
and I guess we speak to eachother. We had that connection, you
know, I had this uh spiritual, soulful connection. Were different from different
backgrounds, but we know each otherin a soul type way. And I

(19:03):
know what she's doing. I meanshe's playing guitar or I'm singing. She
knows where I'm going vocally, andI know where she's going, you know,
with her guitar playing. I don'tknow how it happens that way,
but that's how it happened. Andthey're writing the songs, say the we.
There's blues on there, there's rockon that CD. There's a bit

(19:27):
of jazz. There's one song that'sreally close to my heart. It's called
Fearless One. I don't know ifyou've heard it yet, Fearless One.
It's a beautiful song and we shewrote that for our friends or those who

(19:48):
are on the autism spectrum, andor just anybody who's challenged in some kind
of way to be fearless, andthey are fear us because of those kids.
Are those people who had these theseum they're different, but I'll tell

(20:11):
you what they They have a lotof heart and they're fearless as far as
I'm concerned. So we that thatsong is special. All the songs are
special. Dead Man's Blues is specialbecause we were on Bill Street. We
won the Western Pennsylvania Blues Challenge. We came in first place, and we

(20:34):
went to Memphis and we were onBeal Street and it was magic, magic,
and we were so fortunate to havem Bernard Alison play guitar on that
song, particular song, dead Man'sBlues, and he's you know, he's

(20:56):
the son of Luther Alison, famedguitarist and Luther Allison, and he when
I put that and we put thaton there, we talked about walking down
Beal Street and the ghosts were thepeople that spoke to us that were there
before we've all been there. Thatwas the most wonderful moment for Sherl and

(21:23):
I going to Memphis because we goto Memphis a lot, but we didn't
get a chance together this year becauseof cod and last year. So um.
And there's another song on there withJoanna. Joanna Conners, she's on
there playing guitar on our rock tune. I guess you'd say it's kind of

(21:48):
rock ish forty under that song.I only know what that song is about.
That's something that that's a churl atshirls song and I wanted to know.
I said, you want me tosing the song, I need to
know what it is about before Ican. And she told me what it

(22:11):
was about, so I sang itaccordingly. That's how we kind of connect
some of them. Yeah, weresome of the songs on the album you
know, um, you know stuff. They was kind of from the back
back burner and then you decided toput it on this album. There's a
couple. Yeah, there's some thatwere actually on the first on the first

(22:33):
um see the Stevie Wellens Fans CD. Um, they were really there were
I don't even think there was anyon the back burner, but there was
one. There was a couple thatI said, we're already on the first
CD, and we decided to dothem again, only differently, different feel,

(22:56):
put a different feel on them, and that one would be I would
say one was born to blues.Um, it's a powerful blues tune.
It's simple. I guess you'd saythe lyrics, um, you get the
point when I'm saying when I'm performing, because it's just a strong song.

(23:21):
Um that was on the first umA CD and album and also Trouble.
Um kind of brought Trouble back andput a little different feel on that.
That's more of a shuffle. Wehad to show that we can do these
kind of things, um as,women a lot of women the figure.

(23:42):
You know, we're putting these songson it, and there are a lot
of Don't get me wrong, there'sa lot of female artists. For Sheryl
and I, we've been around awhile, and um, we just had
to, I guess show that wecan still hang. I think you should
see that. But none of themwere go ahead. Not too many were

(24:07):
on a backgard A lot of theseare just written, you know, written
like someone's written someone written during thepandemic. So anyway, yeah, well
conversely, I mean, you knowwith this, will you know tell me
a little bit about selecting the songsthat were going on this album? And

(24:27):
I know you guys are working onanother CD. Were there any like songs
that didn't quite make the cut forthe CD, but you were you know,
you may be putting for the nextalbum. Um As a matter of
fact, Yes, there were acouple that weren't on there that we are
we will be saving for the nextone. UH, can't say too much

(24:51):
about those, but we some wemaybe there maybe have been two that we
decided not to do got to puton on the CD because we have you
know, you have to get toyour board together how many songs you want
to put on the CD? Andum, so we just decided will wait,

(25:14):
wait, wait for the next one. I think the time will be
right for those because we have acatalog of songs. Show has written a
big book of songs, so wehave a lot to choose from. We
just want to make sure we choosethe right one. So I think there's
a couple that we did not puton, So I hope you look for
those for the next CD. Andand how about order, I mean,

(25:40):
you know, obviously you put allthese songs on the board and you have
to have a certain order. Isit was there was there a kind of
a process for you to put akind of what what songs would be in
be in a certain order, whattrack would be in a certain place.
Um, we knew that the introwould be as well as my soul and
the out would be as well tomy soul. So we had to We

(26:02):
had those two I guess these calmbook ends, and we had to figure
out the middle. And um,we put on Set You Free right after
that because I think it would setthe tone as as you know, as
a hyman coming out with something justpops right in your head and you won't

(26:23):
forget. That's something that you probablywill sing along and listen to again say
You're free. Um, I guesswe kind of sort of The process was
I guess sitting there and listening andlistening and listening. Um, didn't take
too long for us to do that, though, I would say didn't take

(26:45):
long to figure out how we wantedto list the songs and how the order
of the tunes on the CD.But like I said, we knew what
the intro and the outo was goingto be. That was a given,
so we just had to get thesongs in between. We worked it out.
I don't know how we did it. We just we just did it.

(27:07):
We just did and and you know, how how's it been? How's
the reaction? I know, um, you know, obviously album's not out
yet, but um, how's thebeen? The reaction, with with the
with the with the fans out there, and you know people that have listened
to five. Well, let's see, so far, we've got a lot
of right up on our already.I'm just knocked me off my feet.

(27:34):
Um with on our, Let's seewho a lot of places, Uh,
Indie Shark, who else? IGashouse Radio Events Magazine, the Hollywood Digests,
Um, Indie Pulse Music. I'mlike, what Broadway World? I

(27:56):
mean, that's they're talking about? Are they're already talking about our debut album,
Soulful Femi. It's um, Ifeel blessed. I we just just
shaking our heads and and and disbelief. I'm happy disbelief. It's just it's

(28:17):
really something that people are embracing thisalbum so soon and and giving it.
I mean, all the reviews sofar have been favorable. I'm I it's
amazing to me, it really is. And it's it's wonderful. Um.

(28:37):
And we are on we're on ablues chart, um a couple and people
are playing it on their radio stationsalready. We're on some playlists and other
stations. Um. Uh, what'sthis othern place I'm trying to think of
the we're on this, Um,um, where is it at? I'm

(29:03):
looking for U. They had thaton the Hollywood Digest and UM, I
don't know. We're on a playlist. I can't believe. We're on a
with the Flux Anniversary Blues DeLux thirtyfourth anniversary UM celebration and we're on the
playlist. We're I mean, we'reon the playlist with with these blues giants.
I can't believe it. I meanBo Didley, you know, Um,

(29:29):
Derek and the Dominoes and as thesong they played was set You Free
right off of our CD Robert Craig. I mean, I'm surprising with and
I'm trying to think we're thirty sixfifty on a chart, which I can't.
I'm having a brain for it.I'm trying to remember. But um,

(29:53):
we're on there, um National Womenof Blues, they're talking about us.
I'm which we are part of naturalthe National and Blues kind of cool
of that? Um where else?I'm oh, here it is. We
are on the Roots Music Report runthat. Um we make the week of

(30:21):
May twenty second, we are thirtysix from the top fifty. We debuted
in our thirty six on the topfifty blues album, so it's it's a
running start. Like my friend MarkBuyers would say, Um, I'm thrilled.
Yeah, you know, I mean, now now things are opening up,

(30:41):
you're starting to perform a little bit. I mean i'd feel interesting because
I mean Europe and you know,Europe and certain other markets really are starting.
You know, they loved they lovethe blues. They've always had a
history of that as well. Sohopefully when things open up, maybe you
get to tour a little bit more. I know there's a couple of blues
and rock club out here in Vegasas well, So you know, hopefully

(31:02):
once the album comes out and getsome success, maybe you can come out
and do some do some performances. We would love to and you come out
and see us, right, Ineed to at some point, because you
know, I've had so many ofMichael's clients on up there in Pittsburgh.
I need to. I need to, you know, fly out there at
one point to see all you allyou find folks to be able to listen

(31:26):
to your music, So playing thatin the future that would be nice.
I know we will be in umsometime in the near future. Like I
said, it was telling you theuh we're working on the second album.
Um that will be going out toCalifornia to report that one. Sou that's

(31:47):
got to be. Like I said, we'll just keep you moving right along.
So I hope to see you, hope to see all in Vegas.
Been there. I like Vegas.I like working out in Vegas. And
yeah there's yeah you said, everything'sopening up. The clubs are opening up
again, you know, and there'sa really great stage out in Fremont where
we get a lot of different bands, so you know it would be interesting.

(32:08):
Plus, uh, like I said, there's quite a few rock and
blues clubs out here as well.I mean now Blues obviously, um you
know out at the Mandalay, andthey also have the uh um the count
you know you know um vamped outhere as well. Both both really great
venues as well. So like Isaid, maybe maybe some at some point

(32:28):
you get can come out here anduh and perform at some point, you
know, I just you know, you and you and you and CHERYLD will
be able to be easy, easyenough to tell off on a plane and
get out here to Vegas. Sowe'll have to see. I want to
mention June fourth, is when thealbum's going to be available. It's well
with my soul is you know thename of the album, So you'll be

(32:51):
able to listen to all twelve tracksas well. Soulfull Fem. You guys
can check them out as well.Just look up on Twitter and all that
as well, any social media atall. Uh, Stevie, I can
look at us up on our websiteww dot soulful Fem dot com. We

(33:15):
You'll be able to see some someof them of our shows. We
did one in Colorado that you mightlike to look at. We did that
like maybe two years ago you mightlike to listen to. But yeah,
