Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to Spacing Out with BB and Jason, this week
covering the two thousand and seven movie Aliens Versus Predator Requiem.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
Welcome to Spacy Now.
Speaker 3 (00:14):
I'm BB and I'm Jason, and this once again is
a special crossover episode where we're going to put it
out on our Predator podcast and our Alien podcast because
it's both. Because it's both, it's a little more Predator.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
Than Alien, yeah, I guess.
Speaker 3 (00:32):
And we're gonna keep putting out Predator movies and that
will hopefully line us up for roughly around when Predator
Bad Lambs comes out. And if you're wondering about Alien
Earth and why we haven't covered that yet, that'll be
coming after we get through Predator. We were busy covering Foundation,
so we wanted to get through those episodes and then
we're circling back to find out what happens on Earth.
(00:55):
And at the time of this recording, all the Alien
and Predator movies are available to stream on Hulu, which
I think is going away or merging with Disney Plus
or something like that.
Speaker 2 (01:04):
That's what they say, And.
Speaker 3 (01:06):
We do reserve the right to have a spoiler section
at the end of the podcast in case we want
to discuss any future entries in the series. Don't how
many plans for that at this time, but just thrown
it out there. In this film, boring Alien and predator
races descend on a rural Colorado town where unsuspecting residents
must span together for any chance of survival. Very generic
plus summary.
Speaker 1 (01:29):
Vibe check. Did we like the movie overall? How does
it stand the test of time? All?
Speaker 3 (01:35):
Right, maybe I gave you a little warning before we
watch this that this was not a highly favored movie
to sort of set the expectations.
Speaker 4 (01:46):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:47):
I wasn't super disappointed, though, with expectations low, so I
kind of liked it. It was kind of weird that
we'll talk about it later, but I liked it. I
think it was like a good movie for what it was.
The acting was like meh, the story was a little meandering,
but overall not the worst movie in the Alien Versus
(02:09):
Predator franchise so far. Well, but there's only been two.
Speaker 3 (02:13):
You're saying it's not the worst of the.
Speaker 2 (02:15):
Two individual franchises.
Speaker 3 (02:17):
Yeah, so you think this one's better than Alien Versus Predator.
Speaker 2 (02:20):
I can't even remember Alien Versus Predator right now. No,
I liked Alien versus Predator.
Speaker 3 (02:26):
Better you like that one and this this episode's coming
out like a week after that. But we actually recorded
that episode a couple three months ago or something, so
it's been a while for us.
Speaker 2 (02:35):
Yeah, we should have maybe done a recap.
Speaker 3 (02:39):
Yeah, I thought the movie might recap a little bit. No,
it just says it's a fuck you're on the road
with us. Yeah, I don't think this is a good movie.
What nine half of it? I can't even see It
is so dark.
Speaker 2 (02:52):
And then you guys are so obsessed with being able
to see movie. You want to see everything. Sometimes it's
good to have like a little darkness, you know. I
You're right, though, there were moments where I'm like, who's that?
What's going on?
Speaker 3 (03:10):
There are times I couldn't tell, like is that the
alien predator? Alien or the predator or what? But yeah,
I don't know, like the story, the characters, like.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
They're a little flat.
Speaker 3 (03:21):
Yeah, they're very flat. There's not like a story structure
very much. It's almost like here's some people, here's those
people dying.
Speaker 2 (03:29):
Yeah, I don't know.
Speaker 3 (03:31):
It just didn't feel like an alien or a Predator
movie really.
Speaker 2 (03:35):
It just it felt like a generic movie kind of
like it could have been any disaster movie.
Speaker 3 (03:40):
Yeah, Like if this wasn't attached to these franchises and
it was just kind of this monster horror movie, like
it would have made no money and people would have
forgotten about it. Yeah. So that's where I'm at with it.
Speaker 2 (03:52):
Okay, So you really don't like it, I'm like, sure,
why not? You know when you like mindlessly eat like
chips and you don't even taste them after a while,
you're just kind of like munching on them. That's how
I feel about this movie.
Speaker 3 (04:06):
I did appreciate that. I mean, I'll save it. I'll
save it.
Speaker 1 (04:09):
Okay, trivia time, let's hear a little information about Aliens
Versus Predator Requiem.
Speaker 3 (04:18):
This was Aliens Versus Predator Requiem. I think I've messed
up that title before. Aliens is plural, predator is singular.
This originally premiered on December twenty fifth, two thousand and seven.
Merry Christmas, Everyone, written by Shane Salerno and directed by
the brothers strauss Man.
Speaker 2 (04:36):
They really put their name on that one.
Speaker 3 (04:39):
So the Strauss brothers, Greg and Colin owned the Visual
effects company and worked on effects for Hollywood films as
well as music videos and commercials and Aliens Versus Predators hardly.
I said that Aliens Versus Predator Requiem is the first
of two films that they directed, and Shane Solerno is
a writer who work on in these Armageddon shaft as
well as all the Avatar sequels. After the financial success
(05:01):
of Alien Versus Predator, Fox Screen lit a sequel in
the spring of two thousand and six, with limited time
before filming was to start in the fall, and the
brothers Strauss were also overseeing visual effects on three hundred
Shooter and Fantastic Four. During the filming process.
Speaker 2 (05:17):
They had too many pots on there. I think they
were they were tending to too many fires.
Speaker 3 (05:21):
Yeah, and you know, directing their first film, yeah, So
they did not go for somewh with an established directing record.
But the film gross one hundred and thirty million against
the budget of forty million, and did well on DVD release,
making another twenty seven million there. It was critically panned
holds of twelve percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
Speaker 2 (05:39):
I don't agree with that, but I'd like, really, I
do like really shitty movies. I will admit I'm crazy.
Speaker 3 (05:46):
It's like it's at least a forty percent.
Speaker 2 (05:48):
Like maybe, like forty forty is a strong showing for it.
I wouldn't give it a big percentage, but like maybe
thirty I don't say.
Speaker 3 (05:58):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (05:58):
Forty forties a lot.
Speaker 3 (06:00):
Plans for future movies are ultimately put on hold, with
the Predator franchise continuing with The Predators in twenty ten,
and the Alien franchise continuing with Ridley Scott's Prometheus in
twenty twelve.
Speaker 2 (06:12):
I didn't like Privius.
Speaker 3 (06:14):
And then Fede Alvarez, who's the director of Alien Romulist,
has expressed interests in directing a third Alien Versus Predator
film alongside Dan Trackenberg, who's the director of Prey and
Predator Badlands.
Speaker 2 (06:27):
Ooh, now that sounds like an interesting movie and a collaboration.
Speaker 3 (06:32):
Yeah, so that's very intriguing. It's definitely not something that's
green leather or anything. It's just an idea you put
out there. But with both of these franchises kind of
back on track, why not.
Speaker 1 (06:46):
Deep Space Dive. Let's break down some of our thoughts
on the movie. You can share your thoughts with us
through email or social media. We may use your comments
on an upcoming episode.
Speaker 4 (06:58):
Start with the bus. No, No, we start with the
alien ship. Yeah, we'd pick up right where we left off.
The movie doesn't bother to catch you up in any
way other than like, kay, this predator has an alien
inside it.
Speaker 2 (07:10):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, and we forgot about that because like,
who remembers that from last year when the film came out.
But most people would you would hope that they would
watch the previous movie before. But you're right, it was
really dark, Like it was shot really darkly, and I
couldn't you would think that the predators, being like really
(07:34):
into hunting and stuff, would have better lighting in their ship.
Their ship was so dark, especially their science area where
they were holding these creatures. I don't know about me,
but I'm like, if I'm if I have like a
science bay, it's gonna be well lit.
Speaker 3 (07:50):
Yeah, that should be like bright fluorescent lightings. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (07:54):
And then so the alien wakes up or I don't, yeah,
because he's like on his death pire or whatever, getting
transported to his homeworld.
Speaker 3 (08:03):
Yeah, because if you remember in the last movie, they
didn't bother to scan that predator or anything, so they
brought that on board. Picks out everyone.
Speaker 2 (08:11):
And Okay, so you see one of those face suckers,
and you shoot at it. How is that smart? Because
you're in a fucking space ship. You wouldn't fucking just
shoot at it.
Speaker 4 (08:27):
You know.
Speaker 2 (08:27):
They have way more options as predators. They have that
fun little like net thing that they could have used,
the acid net. That would have been cool. Like, they
have so many things that they could have used instead
of fucking gone to blow gigantic holes into their ships.
(08:48):
I'm like, these guys aren't that smart If this is
their first choice, This isn't painting them in a positive light,
you know. So then they crash land on Earth. Why
they're close to Earth? Earth? I don't know. Were they
on Earth before?
Speaker 3 (09:02):
I don't remember the last movie. You remember they were
at the Arctic, the Antarctic. They were in the Antarctic, Yeah,
remember there in the ice.
Speaker 2 (09:11):
I don't remember.
Speaker 3 (09:12):
You don't remember that movie at all.
Speaker 2 (09:14):
I don't remember that movie at all. I'm sorry.
Speaker 3 (09:16):
They were in that like temple underneath the ice.
Speaker 2 (09:19):
And they land in Colorado, Colorful.
Speaker 3 (09:21):
Colorado, yep. And then so somehow this alerts one of
the other predators who's like, I gotta go clean this
shit up before it gets out of hand. And you know,
despite like dissolving all the different alien things. It's not
like trying to be super secretive or anything, because it
still like just strings up human bodies when it kills them.
The stuff.
Speaker 2 (09:40):
Yeah, I just didn't understand the predator's motivation sometimes because
like at one point it was destroying evidence. At another
point it was blatantly like displaying human remains.
Speaker 3 (09:54):
So I'm like, yeah, I think it wanted to contain
the outbreak of the aliens. Yeah, because they want to
come hunt on Earth probably, yeah, when the summers in
La get too hot.
Speaker 2 (10:06):
Yeah, But I don't know. It was just like confusing
sometimes what he was doing. And Okay, so we're in
Colorado and the bus stops and a felon comes out
and he hangs out with the sheriffs. They have a
great relationship and their pals weird, right, Yeah, you would
think like, if I just got out of jail, the
(10:28):
last thing I want to do is hang out with
a cop. That's weird. And then and then a carbon
copy of yourself is at a pizza place complaining about
having a job in this economy. Friend. I think this
was before the crash too, before the big financial crisis
of two thousand and eight. So a guy complaining about
(10:51):
having a job was kind of plausible.
Speaker 3 (10:55):
Also as we were watching. So he worked for a
place called pizza one spot at least two other pizza
places like in the small town.
Speaker 2 (11:03):
Oh yeah, there was a Papa John's and like something else.
Speaker 3 (11:07):
There was one as like pizza and steakhouse or something.
Speaker 2 (11:09):
Yeah, so there was a lot of pizza options. So
I don't know, but that girl happened to order from
his place. Yeah, and that girl, God, she's dumb. She sucks.
She sucks so much, not because she's like stupid, but
because she's stupid. I don't know. She's just like dating
a really shitty guy. And then she lets that shitty
(11:32):
guy and his friends beat up the pizza guy, and
then she doesn't help him find his keys in the
sewer grat and then later she's like, oh I fired him, Okay, suck,
So now I want to go swimming with you. That's
your first date the day you broke up with your boyfriend,
You want to go swimming with the pizza guy.
Speaker 3 (11:54):
Yeah, that's so we didn't care enough about to help
out or Yeah, like that was her house. She could
have told those guys to leave.
Speaker 2 (12:02):
She could have called the police because that's assault. She
could have also like gone in her house and gotten
like a magnet or a hanger and try to get
this like the keys out of the grate with him.
Like solutions much miss none, no solutions from her.
Speaker 3 (12:21):
Yeah, this felt like a different era, like this was
something in the eighties or something like, yeah.
Speaker 2 (12:27):
Guys, stop you're hurting him.
Speaker 3 (12:31):
Ooh, she's like jock bullies and yeah, this is uh,
this is the day that everyone gets back in the town.
Speaker 2 (12:37):
The same day that the felon comes into town, is
the same day that the soldier woman comes home from Iraq.
We don't where is she at where she go the war? Yeah,
everybody's getting into town, including the alien and the predator.
And her husband is also an HBO show guy, he's
(12:59):
uh Sam from True Blood.
Speaker 3 (13:01):
And then somehow she became like the main character by
the end, like she was a survivor, and it was
like kind of focused on her and the convict guy. Yeah,
I as if we were rooting for them the whole time.
Speaker 2 (13:13):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (13:13):
There was so much more like character beats with the teenagers.
Speaker 2 (13:17):
Yeah, there were way more character development with the teenagers.
And to that dumb girl just dies with a fucking
knife through her stomach. The way that they took her
out was like so fast and shocking. Her death was
so like, yeah, nonchalant, almost like insignificant to a point.
And then and then homeboy reacts all crazy, even though
(13:40):
like it would have helped if like when she was scared,
he would have held her. He would have been like
reassuring or something to show that their bond is growing,
you know, not like, oh, well, I saw you take
off your clothes at the pool, so you gave me
a stiffy so I like you.
Speaker 3 (13:58):
Now, Yeah, I mean it's I mean, they don't flesh
out any of these characters, but it's hinted that they
were close, like throughout their childhood. I guess. I guess
because it's not the first time they've gone swimming together,
but it's probably the first time as like horny teenagers.
Speaker 2 (14:13):
Yeah, when she has developing breasts or developed breasts, I guess,
but I don't know. It's just weird. And then the
way the alien just kills everybody was boring.
Speaker 3 (14:28):
Yeah, it really was like, here's a scene, meet these characters.
You're through, they are cut to another scene. Come back
to those other characters again and like they're getting attacked
and most likely die.
Speaker 2 (14:39):
Yeah, the little kid and the dad going to hunting.
That is some white people. Shit, man, Oh I hear
a crash, Let me go investigate, not let me go
report it right away. They run towards the danger instead
of away from it. And then as soon as they
notice that it's an alien ship, they the dad kicks
at it like it's a hun kojo, and then they
(15:02):
leisurely walk away.
Speaker 3 (15:03):
Then later they have the homeless people that are living
in the storm shelter or the storm drain. Yeah, like
the police officer is going to carry him away, then
the dog brings out that severed hand. Yeah, and I
guess he doesn't take those people away in that situation.
Speaker 2 (15:19):
I don't think he was a sheriff though. That guy
was wearing like a park ranger outfit, And that was
another thing that was confusing. Why is a park ranger
doing homeless sweeps? And then why doesn't he take them
out of there? Why are they all still there to
be attacked later?
Speaker 3 (15:33):
Yeah, wouldn't even.
Speaker 2 (15:35):
Think if I found a limb, like a like a
literal disembodied limb, wouldn't I want to evacuate the area
as soon as possible to make sure that whatever caused
that doesn't affect these homeless people. Now, I'll leave them
in the fucking sewer.
Speaker 3 (15:52):
Or I mean, in any situation, if your dog comes
up with a severed hand.
Speaker 2 (15:57):
There's gonna be questions.
Speaker 3 (15:59):
Yeah, if know, an officer, some sort of uniformed official.
Speaker 2 (16:04):
Interrogating you. Yeah, but the police officers in this town suck.
They suck. The Morales or whatever his name was, that
racially ambiguous dude. He did not like doing his job.
It seemed he'd rather hang out with a convict.
Speaker 3 (16:24):
Well, I mean, he was working all the time, but
he also seemed to be popping into every joint in town,
dreaking coffee, drinking the beer.
Speaker 2 (16:32):
Yeah, I'm like, do your job, dude, what are you doing?
Speaker 3 (16:35):
Do you go home and rest?
Speaker 2 (16:37):
And when he called it quits, he called it like
that search party. I feel like there could have been
more emotion to that. You know, it was just like
a generic search party scene with flashlights, And I didn't
feel anything for these characters like I should have, Like
(16:59):
even the mom who's like trying to reconnect with her daughter,
and her daughter's like fuck you, mom, I'd rather have
Dad hang out with me, like okay. So, and then
when Dad dies, I felt like that was the moment
where I was like, oh no, that little girl. I
felt like when he was dying, that was the most
dramatic acting that was happening in the whole movie.
Speaker 3 (17:21):
I'm trying to remember how he died.
Speaker 2 (17:22):
He died with the alien eating him out his butt.
He was like he was like running away, and.
Speaker 3 (17:29):
Oh, there were so many.
Speaker 2 (17:31):
There was too many deaths. Yeah, there was too many
deaths and not and for the amount of death that
there was, it was surprisingly not that bloody. Most of
the blood was like on windshields or on lockers, on windows.
It was never like coming out of the body. And
even when the pregnant women were being attacked, it was
(17:53):
just like it was a little gross, but it wasn't
like effectively gross, you know.
Speaker 3 (17:59):
Yeah. Yeah, So I never really had any concept of
like how many aliens there were or if the threat
was ever under control. Just kind of ended with the
bomb dropping.
Speaker 2 (18:11):
Yeah, And I wish they would have made the colonel
more of a character where he was like not looking
forward to making that decision or something.
Speaker 3 (18:21):
Yeah, or I.
Speaker 2 (18:22):
Don't know, because unfortunately, I think it was the right call,
but it sucks that he had to make that call.
My favorite line is like the government would never lie
to us. That was a good line. I don't know.
I feel like they did make the right call though,
going to the going to the hospital and going out
(18:44):
in their helicopter. Yeah, because the other people just kind
of walked into a trap.
Speaker 3 (18:48):
Yeah. I don't know if I have anything else to
say about this.
Speaker 2 (18:52):
It's just a lot of boring shit that happened.
Speaker 3 (18:54):
Yeah. I mean it was short and it moved pretty fast,
but like it was kind of repetitive in the same
so like we were just meeting people and killing people.
Speaker 2 (19:03):
Yeah, you didn't get to be emotionally attached to anybody.
I think it's a good movie to put on, like
in the background if you're like cooking or doing something
else where you don't have to pay attention, which.
Speaker 3 (19:15):
Isn't maybe movie you want to move on. Pick an
astral queen.
Speaker 1 (19:24):
Astral queen, who was the standout character in the film.
Speaker 2 (19:28):
Who's your astral queen? Jason just gonna pick the predator,
The predator, the one that went there to clean everything up. Yeah, yeah,
I was going to pick the Soldier lady.
Speaker 3 (19:40):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (19:40):
I don't know her name, but she got them out.
Speaker 3 (19:43):
I'll find her name.
Speaker 2 (19:44):
Kelly O'Brien, obrien, yeah, even yeah, okay, yeah.
Speaker 3 (19:49):
On this cast list, she's listed second and she seemed
like way down the list in order of importance in
the movie. So that's the that's the Astral Queens then,
So I do think we we got through the worst
of these films. The next one up for Predator franchise
will be Predators Plural twenty ten. I mean, who's in
(20:10):
That's like Adrian Brodie, Cofer Grace, There's some other big
names in there. That's one that I actually like. I
don't think it has like super strong reviews either, but
I always thought it was good. If you're listening on
the Just the Alien podcast, then we'll be doing Alien
Earth next, probably around the end of the year. It
will be I don't think we have a spoiler section,
(20:33):
so that'll do it for us. So thank you for
spacing out with us, and remember that's crazy. The government
doesn't lie to people.
Speaker 1 (20:40):
Thank you for spacing out with Bob and Jason. You
can help us out by subscribing and leaving a positive rating.
Or review. Join us next time as we continue through
the franchise
