Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to spacing out with BB and Jason, this week,
covering Foundation season three, episode eight, Skin in the Game.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
Welcome to Spacey Now.

Speaker 3 (00:15):
I'm Bb and I'm Jason, and we are discussing the
Apple TV sci fi series Foundation one episode at a time,
covering season three week to week and getting stressed out
more and more each time for real. In this episode,
the Mule seeks information about Gail Dornic in the Micagen

(00:36):
sector days but on trial, Dusk is met by a
delegation who planned to give Trantor to the Mule to
preserve a smaller, more sustainable empire. Dusk attempts to talk
to merzial Hou of decanting nucleons and tells her of
his super weapon. Don wakes up in a hospital facility
orbiting New Terminus alongside Beta.

Speaker 2 (00:54):
I knew it.

Speaker 3 (00:55):
I knew he was going to live on Ignis. Scale
tells a second Foundation to evacuate because the Mule will
use han Precher to find them, and Gale and a
crew travel to New Terminus to confront the Mule.

Speaker 1 (01:09):
Five check Did we like the episode overall?

Speaker 2 (01:13):
I liked it. It was good. It had a lot
of variety. I feel like we touched base on almost
all the storylines here, so I was really into it.
Sometimes it's like really Foundation heavy or it's really Empire heavy.
This one was very balanced. I felt.

Speaker 3 (01:31):
Yeah, I still feel like it doesn't bother me. But
like every episode, we tend to leave a couple main
characters out.

Speaker 2 (01:39):
I think we leap out.

Speaker 3 (01:40):
We don't see Torn, We've barely got Beta in there.

Speaker 2 (01:44):
Who's Torn? Oh, Torren is the guy who left her?

Speaker 3 (01:47):
Yeah, Okay, we don't see Hank Precher, so yeah, but yeah,
I think the show is humming along nicely and still
really stressed out of how it's going to work out,
and only two more episodes to go.

Speaker 2 (02:00):
That's crazy.

Speaker 3 (02:01):
We know they're going to fire that weapon soon.

Speaker 2 (02:04):
And Gil's going to go in a black hole.

Speaker 3 (02:06):
And Gail's going after the mule. It's the bad idea, Gail. Okay.
This is Foundation Season three, episode eight, Skin in the Game.
This aired on August twenty ninth, twenty twenty five. Written
by Caitlin Parrish and Tyler Holmes and directed by Roxanne Dawson,
who will be directing the final three episodes. This episode
in the next two, which is kind of what they'd

(02:28):
done this season has had little chunks like that with directors.
That's all I have for trivia, So we can get
straight into it.

Speaker 1 (02:37):
Deep space dive. Let's break down some of our thoughts
on the episode. You can share your thoughts with us
through email or social media. We may use your comments
on an upcoming episode.

Speaker 3 (02:49):
Well, you know, it always starts the recap, which is helpful. Yeah,
but I saw Don in the recap and I'm like, oh,
I think they're going to address dot.

Speaker 2 (02:58):
Yeah if Don is back back again and his legs
are fucked up. Yeah, so I knew that him wearing
a space suit was gonna come into play, Like him
going out into space in a space suit gave him
a chance at life, and Darmazol just wrote him off.

Speaker 3 (03:17):
Yeah, she didn't look for him. She did say that.

Speaker 2 (03:20):
His nanobites stopped working. Yeah, but you don't want to
recover the body, bro, that's weird, that's us. That doesn't
sound like protocol to me.

Speaker 3 (03:30):
And now she might be opening up another Don.

Speaker 2 (03:33):
Yeah, what's the rule with that one? Is it like
that Mickey twenty eight or Mickey seventeen situation where there
can only be one and they murder one. Yeah, I'm
just like that's crazy. Yeah, Don is alive and he
is captured by the mule and he needs Spada and
he's like, why do you look so familiar and she's like, duh,

(03:54):
I cast I'm like online all the time. So he's
like uh no, and she's like, well, we kidnapped musicians
and he's like, oh, yeah, you're that girl. And then
the mule comes in and he's like, oh's Gail Dawnac.
Where does she live? Who does she stay with? And
Don doesn't know shit because Gail was smart enough not

(04:14):
to give Don everything, and Don was just a pawn
in her game anyway. So if they made it very
clear that what they were trying to do was serve
up the empire on a platter, so that the mule
would go after that, not knowing that it would go
after found that the mule would go after Foundation first.

Speaker 3 (04:31):
Yeah, but Gail was smart and never revealing anything to Don,
so he's not helpful in that situation. But she's headed
there anyway.

Speaker 2 (04:38):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (04:40):
But first the Mule goes up against Harry Seldon.

Speaker 2 (04:43):
And Harry Selden teaches him a little thing or two
about his powers.

Speaker 3 (04:47):
Yeah, the mule can't go up against the hologram.

Speaker 2 (04:51):
No, there's no mind to manipulate. And then he finds
that radioactive frequency that barrier. He like, he gets caught
in it, and he could have died.

Speaker 3 (05:02):
Yeah, and Harry could have killed him right there.

Speaker 2 (05:04):
But his curiosity is going to kill the whole universe.

Speaker 3 (05:07):
He's playing some longer game and I don't know how
many people are going to die because of it.

Speaker 2 (05:11):
Yeah, but I think that really humbled the Mule, and
that was kind of interesting to see. I did like
the moments when Gail was on her second Foundation planet
and she was talking to the first Speaker or whatever
his name is, yep, and how quiet that scenes were,
how kind of calm and uh, I don't know, you

(05:33):
had a focus to kind of get everything. You don't
get that in TV sometimes.

Speaker 3 (05:37):
Yeah, you can't be halfway watching the show during those scenes.

Speaker 2 (05:41):
And I have to admit I was kind of halfway
watching when they were talking about like adding a crew,
but I was like, yeah, those portions of the show,
you definitely can't have your two screens.

Speaker 3 (05:54):
Nope.

Speaker 2 (05:55):
So I did like that juxtaposition though, of like everything
being quiet, kind of calm, and even though they're like
conversations are heavy, and you know, they're talking about really
serious stuff. It's still not loud, and that's kind of
welcome because everything on TV lately has been loud.

Speaker 3 (06:15):
Yeah. Well, there are people that can communicate without words.

Speaker 2 (06:18):
So yeah, so that's good. I like it. I like
that they show that that's not something you see on
TV every day either, Like deaf people speaking of showing
different ways of storytelling. How about those robot people and
their fun little theater. Yeah, I mean they had interpretive dance,
they had a spotlight, they had backlighting, they had a

(06:42):
like a chorus.

Speaker 3 (06:45):
I know they're like, finally we have someone new to
perform too.

Speaker 2 (06:48):
Yeah, Like how then you know they practice, They got
to practice. There's rehearsals, there's there's costuming, there's makeup. It's
a whole production. So I wonder how lung he was
sitting in a cell or sitting in that lady's living
room waiting for them to figure that out.

Speaker 3 (07:06):
Well, I assume they perform this on the regular just
as part of their religion.

Speaker 2 (07:11):
Maybe it seems like they perform it when it's time
to convict. It's part of their justice system, which I
feel like, you know, our justice system is a little
like theater, like a small theater, Like you have the judge,
the lawyers, the plaintiffs, and the jury and they're all

(07:32):
playing to the jury and the judge. And it's very
interesting to see it kind of like really like interpret
it in a more theatrical way, like a truth theater
for the justice system. I really like that.

Speaker 3 (07:47):
But then when Day like bears his soul there, he
gets called an actor.

Speaker 2 (07:52):
Yeah, yeah, so it's very I like the nuance, I
like the visuals, and I do love the story telling
that like, hey, I remember this song and he got
that robot head to talk back to him, and I
would if. I mean, it's a really weird tribunal because
there's only one person making the decisions, even though there's

(08:15):
an audience of people witnessing. So and you could tell
some of the people like they zoomed in on some
of the people like reacting in a way where they're like,
oh no, we believe him. So it's very interesting to
see that.

Speaker 3 (08:28):
Then it's revealed that the sun Maaster knows he's telling
the truth, which the.

Speaker 2 (08:34):
People who were standing right there couldn't just hear that conversation.
There were at least two people holding Day back and
they were like, Hey, what do you mean, excuse me?
And I think there was a moment where Day was
really repenting because he felt like super guilty about enslaving

(08:54):
a robot and the way she that he's been treating
her like his whole life since he found out that
she doesn't love him and she would rather have freedom
than him. So I think there. I think it's an
interesting development for the character to have that kind of
repentance and remorse because we haven't seen that in too

(09:16):
many Cleons in the past.

Speaker 3 (09:19):
Yeah, and it's made for a nice little arc for
his character this season.

Speaker 2 (09:24):
I'm just thinking of the scene when he met that
hologram or that that version of him, the idealized version
of himself, and how different he was from the original Cleon.
That they've kind of magiced into that space that where
they can ask questions and stuff. But I don't know. Uh.

(09:45):
He remembers Dermazols singing a song and talking about how
they're all connected, and he's like that robot's looking for
his other robot friend and I'm like, well, there you go.
Just take that robot head to Demerzol and they'll they'll
find each other. I wonder what would happen then.

Speaker 3 (10:02):
Do you think Day comes out of this alive?

Speaker 2 (10:05):
I think so. I think his character is too developed
for him to just fall off the edge of the
world at this point. I think his arc is still arcing,
and I think there's still unfinished business between him and
song Yeah.

Speaker 3 (10:21):
I mean, like the way they cut it, Like I
think if he's going to die, there like the dramatic
notice the end on his death versus cut right before it. Yeah,
But if he does die, then I would think Songbird
is picking up the mantle to freedom.

Speaker 2 (10:36):
Result, Yeah, if she ever gets a hold of her memories,
because her memories told the truth. And I don't know,
I feel like they kind of let Day's exit mirror
Dawns in some ways where they left the door open,
you know, yeah, through a door and into an abyss
seemingly unprotected. So I like that that's kind of mirroring

(10:58):
each other. The two lost brothers.

Speaker 3 (11:00):
Yeah, because the only one left around the throne only
has forty nine hours left.

Speaker 2 (11:06):
Yeah, and he's a fucking nut. He's a fucking nut,
and he's like, hey, de Resol, you don't need a
decant more. Just keep me around, coach, let me in.
I have a special planet killer you need to check out.

Speaker 3 (11:19):
I got this gun that's burning a hole in my pocket.

Speaker 2 (11:22):
And I can't believe you didn't know about it.

Speaker 3 (11:24):
To be honest, it was I think he was kind
of excited about that, Like I managed to keep a
secret from you. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (11:30):
And then when he finds out the truth about Don,
He's like, no, there's no way, He's not a treacherous snake.
He wouldn't betray us on purpose. So I like that
he's still like kind of looking out for Don, And
I like how he he has this image of Don
in his mind that Don was like the worthy one,
like he was finally he was finally the right step

(11:53):
in the right direction for their dynasty. And I think
because he aligned himself with the foundation, I think he's
right because he was willing to put turn his back
on empire for the greater of humanity. I think he
was really onto something about Don being the best cleon.

Speaker 3 (12:11):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (12:11):
I'm just you know what, I'm like really waiting to
see when the facade for Dusk starts to crack and
his girlfriend sees who he's becoming or who he's been
all along because she has the idealized version of him.

Speaker 3 (12:28):
He's a little two faced worries.

Speaker 2 (12:30):
Yeah, and I feel like she's going to be like
an innocent bystander in his violent rage or something.

Speaker 3 (12:36):
Yeah. So he's approached by the Cloud Dominion and a
couple other affections who want to just give up Trantor
to try to pacify the Mule.

Speaker 2 (12:46):
Yeah, you give up the crown jewel, but you get
to keep the crown. That was kind of their logic.
They're like, give them a high value asset so that
we can continue to rule our faction. But that's crazy
because Trantor is so big, and he's like, they're right,
it would take a long time to loot it. But

(13:08):
that's not what the Mule wants. If the Mule wanted
loot that pleasure planet would have been enough.

Speaker 3 (13:13):
Yep. He wants power.

Speaker 2 (13:16):
Power, and with power, like, you can't you can't give up.
I don't and I don't know how tactical it is
to take tr Enter. It sounds like it's centrally located.
It has a lot of like travel the hubs. You
know that that Empire and Remasol built together. So I
feel like that's a very strategic place to take over too,

(13:41):
in the center of the quote unquote known universe. So
I don't know, I don't know, and I'm like very
interested to see whether or not their threats have any weight,
because it looks like with two seats something and the
last one on a tipping, ticking time bomb, like he's
do to expire any day now? Is it these smaller

(14:05):
factions within Empire that are making a move to take
over and basically rewrite what empire is because this is
where the facilities are to create more cleons is. I
don't think it'd be very easy to move all of
their little embryos or whatever they have to another place,

(14:26):
Like logistically speaking, how do you move that palace with
all of their history and stuff too?

Speaker 3 (14:31):
Yeah, I think those groups are feeling like the genetic
dynasty is over. They look at that throne room, they
just see one guy that's about to expire.

Speaker 2 (14:41):
He's the old one. Yeah, so like they think this
might be the end of Empire and maybe the beginning
of something new, And like where does that leave down
with Drumosol. She obviously doesn't want that to happen, So
the look in her face when she found out about
that on that dust has it kind of looked like intrigued,

(15:04):
like like there's a possibility, like there's something they can do.
But if everybody's so, are they going to destroy the
planet that the foundation is on, because that's where everyone's going, right,
That's where Gail has her vision of the black hole.

Speaker 3 (15:17):
I thought she had the vision on Trent Or.

Speaker 2 (15:21):
Oh yeah, so he's going to shoot himself in the foot.
What's going on?

Speaker 3 (15:25):
Yeah, I don't know, but I thought Marzl knows that
vision now, so she's probably connecting the dots so like, oh,
this weapon is the cause of that scenario, but who
pulls the trigger?

Speaker 2 (15:38):
Very interesting. I'm very excited to see what's going to
happen next time. I feel super bad for Beta, but
she's told the mule you need to leave, and he's like,
you're right. So I like that she has a little
bit of say in what happens around her.

Speaker 3 (15:54):
I like that Don told him to stop it up.

Speaker 2 (15:57):
Yeah, well, first the mule said his rain is a biscuit,
and then Don said stop it up. Then that was
really good, uh turn of phrase and uh physic like uh,
what is the word descriptive? Language, sop it up?

Speaker 3 (16:15):
What else talked about? Don Harry versus the Mule, the
secretorium on Mica Gin where they have the trial, that's
the location in the books, just their temple. Basically, when
Day was whistling out that song in my head, I'm like, man,
what if like he tried to whistle in that moment
and it just couldn't.

Speaker 2 (16:35):
He couldn't whistle genetically, he's not able to whistle.

Speaker 3 (16:38):
Is there like trying to blow the air trying to
get the right notes? Don and Beta? Oh uh, So
the Merzo goes to her little therapy session and.

Speaker 2 (16:49):
Basically renounces her religion.

Speaker 3 (16:51):
Yeah, she does. And then she she wipes the memory
of the therapist. She does that every time. Yeah, she
does that every time. She has special memories that hedge
And then I was kind of awestruck that that priestess
or cleric or whatever her title is religious representative was
part of the faction that wants to give over new terminus.

(17:15):
I hope that she's able to access the things that
were told to her one day. I feel like that
would be really interesting kind of plot twist where she
like realizes that Grimazol is a robot. Yeah, I mean
Gail and her crew are I mean, they're heading into
a trap, but I think they kind of know that too.

Speaker 2 (17:34):
Yeah, that's she's the I think it's like there's no
element of surprise anymore. It's just an element of who's stronger.
And that's why she That's why her partner, her friend
or her coworker. I don't know what kind of relationship
they have, their metallics people on the same planning. I

(17:54):
don't know. But her friend is like, no, you can't
go alone. You're stronger with others like you.

Speaker 3 (18:00):
Yeah, but they're still trying to be somewhat secretive about
like getting dropped off and stuff. So yeah, they're not
just walking in there and like here we are.

Speaker 2 (18:09):
No, no, because they need to cook up with Pritcher
because that's her boyfriend and he wanted to marry her
or remember, so she was never gonna like go and
save the Foundation number two, which is what she wanted
homeboy to do. Her friend like go and you know,
evacuate and don't tell me where you're going, do don't
ever be found, protect the second foundation at all costs.

(18:32):
And now she's going to the first foundation to maybe
well obviously to pick up her boyfriend, but maybe to
save the first Foundation from itself. It'd be very interested
to see her talk to Harry Selden.

Speaker 3 (18:45):
Yeah, it's interesting that, you know, she was originally headed
to Terminus and she never made it there, and she's
never seen his vault or anything. Yeah, so she had
a moment of kind of taking that in and she
talks about Salvor a little bit and what she would
say if she had another chance to see her again,
which makes me feel like we're hinting at some sort
of return for her. Still, we'll see holding my Braith. Yeah.

(19:08):
I think that covers everything in the episode.

Speaker 2 (19:11):
Yeah, we saw the episode and we're excited to see
the next one.

Speaker 3 (19:14):
Are we excited about any specific character.

Speaker 1 (19:20):
Astral Queen. Who was the standout character in the episode?

Speaker 3 (19:25):
Oh?

Speaker 2 (19:25):
Man, I think I'm going to give it to Brother
Day for whistling while he works. No, yeah, I'm going
to give it Today for repenting and having a different
perspective on his role in Dermerzel's life.

Speaker 3 (19:42):
Yeah. I think that is the standout like emotional arc
and performance in the episode.

Speaker 2 (19:49):
Are you also going to give it today?

Speaker 3 (19:51):
I'm thinking about it. My other option might be the
virtual Harry Selwyn just for knocking the mule on his
ass for a moment that.

Speaker 2 (19:58):
Was really good.

Speaker 3 (19:59):
Yeah, so I think we needed to see that he
wasn't completely invincible.

Speaker 2 (20:04):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (20:05):
Other than that, yeah, I mean I think it's brother
Day that was just such a strong role in this.
All Right, do you have any hope he continues?

Speaker 2 (20:14):
Yeah, I hope he continues too. I'm pretty sure he
will be back. Do you have any spoilers?

Speaker 3 (20:21):
Not particularly? All Right, that wraps it up for us.
The next episode will be season three episode nine, The
Paths that Choose Us, and thank you for spacing out
