Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to Spacing Out with BB and Jason, this week
covering Foundation season three, episode nine, The Paths That Choose Us.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
Welcome to spacy now.

Speaker 3 (00:16):
I'm BB and I'm Jason, and we are discussing the
Apple TV sci fi series Foundation, one episode at a time,
covering season three week the week. It's only one more
episode left to go after this, so you might be
listening to our on the Foundation podcast channel, but we
do have our main channels Spacing Alphoebe and Jason. We've

(00:37):
covered a lot of other stuff on there, so feel
free to check that out in this episode. Oh, I
forgot to pare down this plot summary. Let's see if
I can do it in real time. Oh. So, Gail
and their followers arrive on New Terminus. They meet up
with Han, who takes them to join his crew of people,
including ebling Me Magnificode, who is still in love with

(00:58):
the Mule. Turns out their day, survives his fall into
the bowels of Micagen, where he's freed by Song. He
then kills sun Maaster eighteen and gets the robot head
to take back to Demersal. Dusk goes full crazy, blows
up some planets, tells the mule the fuck off, and
Demersal's a little conflicted about how she wants to proceed

(01:20):
with her actions. She goes digging around for some answers.
H speaks with Calais and then what else do we have?
Ambassador Quinn is also really upset with Dusk.

Speaker 2 (01:32):
And Dusk destroys planets.

Speaker 3 (01:35):
I said that, oh okay. And then Gail and her
followers meet up with Harry at the vault and he's
agreeing to help her reach the mule, but it turns
out he wants the body too.

Speaker 1 (01:48):
Five check. Did we like the episode overall?

Speaker 3 (01:52):
All?

Speaker 2 (01:52):
Right?

Speaker 3 (01:53):
Episode nine? How do you feel about this one?

Speaker 2 (01:55):
I like it. It was kind of gory, though, yeahind
of like just gross out some of it, and a
lot of blood, and it was kind of hard to.

Speaker 4 (02:06):
Watch in some points, some violence, some genocide, But I
may I feel like we're just continuing a very strong
season and this episode definitely it ramps things up, but
I also feel like some of it was just like
getting the pieces in play for the big finale.

Speaker 2 (02:22):
Yeah, you can tell. It's like ramping up and it's
going so I'm very excited for the last episode, but
I'm also kind of It's kind of bittersweet because it's
such a good show to enjoy, like on the weekends
or whenever you watch it, like weekly. Kind of nice.
But I'm excited because once we finish this up, we

(02:45):
can start watching the creepy little alien show. Yes, so
I thought this was gory. I can't wait for the
next thing. But yeah, I think it's gonna be really
good end of the season, and I'm this episode was
really great. I loved it. I really did.

Speaker 3 (03:03):
This was Foundation season three, episode nine, The Paths That
Choose Us, originally aired on September fifth, twenty twenty five.
Was written by Jane Espenson and Eric Carrasco and directed
by Rock Sande Dawson, who directed the previous episode and
the following episode. There's no other trivia, so let's get
into the space space.

Speaker 1 (03:27):
Deep space dive. Let's break down some of our thoughts
on the episode. You can share your thoughts with us
through email or social media. We may use your comments
on an upcoming episode.

Speaker 3 (03:39):
So we start off with Gail on New Terminus and
she's got some powers. Yeah, she's manipulating, she's reading people.

Speaker 2 (03:48):
And she learns how the mule infiltrates people's minds now
a little bit, she has like a better idea of
how to find if they've been manipulated or not, which
helps her when she gets together with her partner Prichard.

Speaker 3 (04:04):
Yeah, he's got a dual little test.

Speaker 2 (04:07):
Yeah. It was so sorry, make sure they're not silenced. No,
but she uh, she was trying to basically interrogate this
girl with like Salve Wars techniques, and it was nice
to hear about Salve War again. And then she goes
into her mind and she it looks like she's getting somewhere,

(04:28):
but then all of a sudden, the mule grabs hold
and drags her down and she has like a physical
reaction to it, where she dies because his hold is
so strong and Gail can't release her from it.

Speaker 3 (04:41):
Yeah, she learns the holdest is too strong, like she
can't hould them back.

Speaker 2 (04:45):
Yeah, and that's pretty scary like to think about like
that level of manipulation.

Speaker 3 (04:51):
Yeah, and it was creepy. We got some real like
horror aspects in this. Yeah, smile on her face.

Speaker 2 (04:58):
As she she's thinking into the deep dark water and
then when she when they zoom out and they show
you her physical body just covered in blood and then
her eyes twitched all the way to the back of
her skull. Oh, it was horrifying, horrifying. I hated it.

(05:19):
I hated Oh it was too much, too much for
me trying to watch sci fi not horror. But I
guess there's like an overlap that's very present in this episode.

Speaker 3 (05:29):
Yeah, Brother Dusk, he's he's really.

Speaker 2 (05:32):
He's a root and toot and cowboy, ready to shoot
anybody who's challenging him, except for the one guy that's
supposed to get shot down. So the Mule sees right
through his like petty little shit. I love the word
petty to describe his actions. Yeah, I think that's like
spot on, And I was like that this was what

(05:53):
I was speculating right earlier. I was like, what's gonna
happen with his girlfriends? Finally sees the real him and
boy talk about a consequential action.

Speaker 3 (06:03):
He's like, I knew you would react like this, just
blew up some planets, can't you understand?

Speaker 2 (06:09):
Yeah, He's like, I'm the oppressed, I'm the lamb. I'm
the one who's being just like, you know, I'm justified
in my horrible actions because they were offering me up
as a sacrificial offering or whatever.

Speaker 3 (06:26):
You're not going to be mad at me on my
last day alive, are you?

Speaker 2 (06:30):
Yeah? And she's like, fuck you, you gross pig and
she walks away, and god damn, Like he kills the
Cloud Kingdom. So any hope that maybe like there's like
an alternate timeline where the Cloud Princess and that Dawn
escaped there, it's gone, I.

Speaker 3 (06:49):
Imagine maybe, I mean, unless they didn't run there, yeah,
if that makes sense too, But I mean that that
could have been the end of their storyline though, that
they just they got to live, Yeah, kind of like
when Harry scooped everyone up in the vault, you know,
like we didn't see those characters again, but they got
to live.

Speaker 2 (07:06):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (07:08):
But yeah, he takes out the council too, So that's
like big, big dictator moves.

Speaker 2 (07:14):
Yeah. Yeah, it's big moves for a guy who's on
his deathbed.

Speaker 3 (07:18):
And he's still claiming that he's not trying to stop
his ascension. But I would not be surprised if next
episode he runs away he tries to stop in some
way or another.

Speaker 2 (07:30):
Yeah, he's a dick. I don't like him. He's the
worst one so far.

Speaker 3 (07:35):
Yeah, it's been a good twist this season with shaking
up these three Empire characters.

Speaker 2 (07:41):
And then the fact that Don was watching this in
live action with the Mule, like witnessing what his brother
was supposed to like gift to him, and he's like,
this isn't right. That was just like shaff Kiss, like
he had hidden this real part of himself from everybody.

Speaker 3 (08:00):
Yeah. So I mean as we watched that, we were thinking,
like why not aim the thing at the Mule at
New Terminus? And I guess we kind of get an
explanation from the Mule that like it must just not
reach so far.

Speaker 2 (08:12):
Yeah, because if he could, he would. That's a great
logical step. If he could, he would. So something is
his big gun is not very big. Yeah, as the
Mule said, his sticks not long. Ooh, and the Mule
is like taking a very particular interest in Empire with
Dawn specifically like bothering him and stuff.

Speaker 3 (08:35):
Yeah, that's the kind of the scene we didn't really
get into a lot into, which is like we just
need to keep these characters here until next episode. I
thought like, yeah, like they lingered on them shots of
like Beta in there, but I don't think shaven out
of line.

Speaker 2 (08:50):
No, I don't think. So that very interesting developments with
that gun finally getting used and then Demerzoll was co
signing everything he was doing. Yeah, and she's like, I
think she says it twice in this episode, I am Empire. Yeah,
so it's like really doubling down that she is Empire.

(09:11):
And I think that vocalization, that maybe even realization, is
kind of changing her perspective on her actions. And we
see that when she goes to the library.

Speaker 3 (09:22):
Yeah, so she's really trying to sort out what she
saw from Gail. Yeah, and there's like a paradoxical paradoxical
aspect to it of like she wants to help the
Second Foundation, but they're the those Empire. Yeah. So she's
been kind of dealing with these contradictory ideas and you know,

(09:43):
the Empire is following that would set her free, but
it's in our program. You do everything to protect it.

Speaker 2 (09:49):
But if she's Empire, then she'll always be free. Yeah,
that's my mentality, you know, like if you are Empire,
then you will always be free and it doesn't like
matter or what you choose to do, because Empire will
always be you. And as long as you're living, empire
will be successful. So and I'm very interested to see

(10:10):
the thorough line of her, like coming to power in
a way without the clones and that extra robot head.
That fucking robot head. Bro that was so brutal. Oh,
that fucking scene. But I'm not done talking about Germisol,
are you. I think she had a really interesting conversation
with that lady. That lady that's so mysterious to me

(10:32):
because I still don't know who she is, and she
didn't really revealed herself to be anybody either. She's like,
some people call me the Prime Radiant. Other people call
me what you called me, Carvana or whatever, And she's like,
isn't it fun having somebody to talk to bouncing ideas
off of? Because you know, those guys are fucking idiots.

(10:54):
They're fucking idiots and you can't have a real conversation
with them. But aren't you glad you can Kiki with a.

Speaker 3 (10:59):
Girly Well she kind of had that when she go
into the hedges and talk to that lady, but I
don't think she's available anymore.

Speaker 2 (11:08):
No, Yeah, I think Dusk really hammered that home too,
where he's like, well, you can talk to me, because
I don't think your girlfriend's going to talk to you anymore.
And I think that Demerzel kind of knew she was
going to have to do something that would upset her
because she gave back her little salt bracelet and then
she was holding that bracelet when her planet was being destroyed.

(11:32):
That was rough man, that us. That really was rough.
I don't know, it just sucks, Like killing planets is
crazy work crazy.

Speaker 3 (11:42):
Yeah, and they did it with the planets that we
have actually come to know somewhat in the series, which
is why, like the season feels very like well rounded.

Speaker 2 (11:52):
It's like tapping into previous seasons.

Speaker 3 (11:55):
Yeah, like being the Men. It feels like it's cumulative,
like it's wrapping up. And that's and I did want
to mention I didn't want to put this in trivia
because it's all just speculation, but there's a lot of
people thinking that the future of the Foundation series is
actually like a spinning off into a robot series.

Speaker 2 (12:12):
We should have talked about this in the spoiler section,
shouldn't we. I mean, it's just you think that's what
it's going to be. Though, that's like the speculation, it's speculative, Ah,
speculative fiction.

Speaker 3 (12:24):
Whether that's more of like a prequel thing I think
is what I was reading that people are thinking about. Okay, so,
like all the stuff that talking about, how like the robots.

Speaker 2 (12:34):
Were hiding in the cupboards. Oh, that there is so
much reference to the Holocaust in this, with the genocide
of the planets and the robots hiding in the libraries,
and like all of these things that are like reminiscent
of human history as it has unfolded and is continuing

(12:58):
to unfold. And she was like kind of speculat like
she was kind of like alluding to the fact that
this is going to happen again. I'm gonna like the like,
the only way that this happens is if I open
this door and let them hide here. But then if
I do that, am I betraying them? Or am I

(13:18):
helping them? And she's not sure, And that's where her
paradox is. That's where she's confused about what it is
that she's supposed to be doing or has done, like
because she's not sure if she can trust Gail's version
of the future. And it's a possible future because we've
seen other iterations of the future with Gail where Salvor

(13:39):
dies in a different way. So it's not fixed. True,
it's not fixed, that's what we've learned. But she doesn't
know that. So all she has is like like the
lady said, she has the output instead of the input,
and that's like fucking with her robot brain. So I
think it'd be very interesting to see the people of

(13:59):
the Foundation who have been able to escape the Mule
to find refuge on Terminus, the place that had exiled
that initially because of their beliefs. I think that's kind
of brilliant.

Speaker 3 (14:12):
You want to talk about Brother Day now.

Speaker 2 (14:15):
Brother Day falling into the Abyss and landing in three
inches of water? What how did he survive? What is
going on? First of all, he should have been the
one that splattered instead of Homeboy that you know, with
the with the with the abs. That would have been

(14:36):
the end of it. For the way that they shot that,
the way that he was falling into like this deep
dark hole. And then he lands in three inches of water.
He should have splatted.

Speaker 3 (14:46):
Well, we didn't see him land He actually bounced off
the whole trampoline London.

Speaker 2 (14:51):
He landed in one of those big Hollywood pillow things
full of air that the stunt guys roll into. But
he's like trying to climb up this weird poll and
it's sticky and there's like weird nasty things everywhere, sticky, gross.

(15:11):
You can only imagine it stinks. And then he gets
I don't know how he gets to a shower a
great does he fall into it? Does he get grabbed? Don't?
I didn't. I wasn't focusing and I'm sorry song I
saw a song.

Speaker 3 (15:27):
But she gets some pulled out of there?

Speaker 2 (15:29):
And does she use a hook? How does she do it?

Speaker 3 (15:32):
She just like opens the hatch kind of Yeah.

Speaker 2 (15:35):
That's what I'm saying. It's like a trap door from where,
Like where does she she went from being all the
way up there to all the way down there into
a weird little room with a shower and a grate,
and like no one, no one noticed.

Speaker 3 (15:51):
She was doing her like she was kind of on
trial too, like they were like gonna sentence her as well.

Speaker 2 (15:56):
I'm surprised she didn't fall through with him, because he was.
She was right next to him. So I'm like, you know,
we're gonna suspend our disbelief right now because it's happening
it's happening. She cleans them up, she takes away his
little sticky tea little parasites, and she's like, you better run,
and he's like, you know what I gotta do. I

(16:17):
gotta get that robot head. And he goes and nobody
stops him. Nobody stops him. Like he punches a couple
of people, but they look like they were just standing there.
They didn't look like they were really trying. Either those
people or Hella hella week, or they weren't really trying.

Speaker 3 (16:33):
They're all abs.

Speaker 2 (16:37):
All of their strength is in their core, so unless
they're gonna crunch you to death, they're not. They can't
do shit with their upper bodies or like their backs
are really sore. But he like runs up and it
looks like he's only on the second floor, but somehow
he's on the top. To me, it only looked like
he ran like maybe once or twice around that thing.

Speaker 3 (16:57):
Yeah, I mean thereinds.

Speaker 2 (17:01):
I really wish it would have been him running and
running and running and running and running and running because
I love that shit, him moving and weaving and pushing
people aside. And then he gets to him and he
like beats the shit out of him, and then the
guy bites him and I'm like, oh, you got to
check that out because you were just covered in goo.

(17:21):
That's that's an open wound. That's not good. You're gonna
get an infection. He's gonna end up looking like down
with them feet. And then he like stabs him with
his own stick and throws him over the edge, and
I'm like, ooh, that's a little window. That's a little
hint of that, that evil, malevolent version of him, just

(17:43):
like dusk. And I'm like, damn, we also saw it
when he murdered that one man and used his body
as a double and gave him his micro waves.

Speaker 3 (17:52):
Yeah, full nanobots.

Speaker 2 (17:54):
Yeah, the nanobots.

Speaker 3 (17:54):
I just don't understand why Don's nanobots ceased to work.

Speaker 2 (17:59):
They got cool. They don't work.

Speaker 3 (18:03):
Unless it was just unless the Marsal knew he was
still alive and was playing some bigger game. But we
don't have any hind of that.

Speaker 2 (18:10):
No, there's nothing like that. I think she was just
counting him out. She can't control any of these empires.
She's tried in the past and has failed, so they
just keep getting out of her reach, getting out of control,
and she's like every year, every cycle, she just doesn't
learn anything, it seems, which is crazy because she lives

(18:32):
through all these cycles. You watch Dusk walking through every
version of himself and I'm like, and she still can't
control these men.

Speaker 3 (18:40):
Yeah. Well, I mean with the time jumps, I'm assuming
things went pretty quote unquote normal for between we're just
watching the ones.

Speaker 2 (18:49):
That really have.

Speaker 3 (18:51):
Yeah, it's crazy how much like last season we just
despised brother Day for being the worst, and now he's
like one of my favorite it's to succeed. So yeah,
and Dusk has taken up the mantle of the evil.

Speaker 2 (19:05):
Yeah. Crazy, crazy, So I love that they do that,
that they they're able to like portray these guys in
different ways because they're different people every time, even though
they're like genetically similar. So I like it. I'm excited.
I'm just like very interested to see what's going to
happen next.

Speaker 3 (19:26):
Yeah, I mean we're definitely setting everyone up for whatever
is going down next episode.

Speaker 2 (19:32):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (19:32):
I'm wondering if we're going to see kind of that
scene we keep seeing in the dream sequence with the mule,
the one where Salvor died, So maybe it's not the
thing's going to happen since she's not part of it. Yeah,
magnificent being infected by the mule right hard and they're
keeping him around, So that's definitely going to play in somehow.

Speaker 2 (19:52):
Right, I think that. And then like Harry not knowing
that the other Harry is dead and having this disdain
for being like this left behind computer model. I think
he's like, I don't know, Like I don't know what
his game is. I feel like they just walked into
a trap, you know, like they think they're gonna lie
to him. But I feel like he wants a body,

(20:14):
and when he finds out he can't get one. I
feel like he's ready to do something dressed because I
think Gail touched a really important detail where she's like,
you've helped people in the past, why didn't you help
them now? You could have saved so many people right now?
Why did you close? Why did you turtle?

Speaker 4 (20:31):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (20:32):
And I feel like there's a pretty good chance we
will see the other Harry sellon.

Speaker 2 (20:37):
Yeah, especially with that magic lady. I don't know what
she does. I don't know what her deal is. The
Prime Radiant, whatever her name is. She's back in the
picture and she is so mysterious. Yeah that I do
want to see her again, and I hope she has
a bigger role in this somehow. Like I like that
she's a robot sympathizer. So I'm very interesting to see

(21:00):
what's going to happen next.

Speaker 3 (21:01):
I feel like the next episode needs to be like
two hours long.

Speaker 2 (21:05):
To wrap up all these loose scinds and.

Speaker 3 (21:08):
What's going to happen to Demerzal when she meets the
other robot?

Speaker 2 (21:12):
All right, what's gonna happen because Demersal can fix that robot?

Speaker 3 (21:15):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (21:15):
What if that other robot looks like that magic Lady?
Very interesting. I don't know, I'm just speculating, you know,
I'm not I don't know. I'm in the dark with
everybody else.

Speaker 3 (21:25):
I'm just trying to see if there's anything in the
plot that we missed. Really, we see Torren Mallow. It
seems very angry.

Speaker 2 (21:35):
Yeah, I think he's rightfully angry and suspicious. Yeah, but
I think it's interesting that he's defunding Magnifico. I think
that's very interesting.

Speaker 3 (21:44):
Yeah. I think because Magnifico does love Beta, but he's
gonna love the Mule more.

Speaker 2 (21:49):
Yeah, because the Mule is just like holding his mind hostage.

Speaker 3 (21:53):
Do we see anything of day, like after he kills
the Sunmaster.

Speaker 2 (21:58):
Yeah, he's walking down with the brain with the robot head,
just walking down the streets of that robot planet, barefooted,
going home.

Speaker 3 (22:08):
I hope he gets some more sweet treats on his
way out.

Speaker 2 (22:11):
Dude, that fucking candy scene. You know, you know how
there's some people who will do like a meal to
go with the show or something like on TikTok and stuff.
That would be so cool if somebody replicated those candies.
I know, it's like impossible to make because it's a
made up fruit that like tastes like nothing you've ever

(22:32):
tasted before. But even if it's strawberries, it'd be so
cool to have something some little mochi kind of candies.

Speaker 3 (22:39):
Yeah, but if they'd also have to replicate dust Dusk's
last meal.

Speaker 2 (22:44):
Oh no, Yeah, you're right, that brain and that lamb.
That was some bitter dinner. Yeah, that dinner. He thought
it was going to be so good and great, but
he earned his fucking new name. The consequential.

Speaker 3 (22:56):
You're sitting alone, sitting.

Speaker 2 (22:58):
In the consequences of his own actions. She ate when
she left him. She did She's like, you know what,
I'm not going to forgive you, and you're gonna be
fucking alone. I love her, and it sucks for her
because she's like, what am I left with? The Foundation's gone,
The Empire's fucking trash because you made it, you pooped
on it, You took a shit on my version of

(23:20):
empire that I loved and was willing to maybe even
like turn back my turn back on my fundamental beliefs
to uphold empire. Little does she know there's a foundation
number two. Somebody needs to save.

Speaker 1 (23:36):
Her astral queen. Who was the standout character in the episode?

Speaker 2 (23:44):
For me, it's Gail. This one is very clearly Gail
because she's like touching down on a planet where she
knows she's want like that the consequences are death.

Speaker 3 (23:54):
This is it.

Speaker 2 (23:55):
This is gonna be my big show down with the Mule,
and she's going straight for it. She's not like hiding,
she's not evading, She's going for it.

Speaker 3 (24:04):
Yeah, the Gail we've got this season who is just
like confident and not living in Harry's shadow and not
like struggling with self esteem or anything like that. Like,
it's been a real pleasure to watch and this episode
was like she just came in peak peak. Gail was
a step ahead of everybody, ahead of everybody, And even

(24:25):
when she's meeting with Harry Seldyn, like it's more like
equals that are meeting.

Speaker 2 (24:30):
Yeah, yeah, and she's manipulating him.

Speaker 3 (24:32):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (24:32):
We don't know if he's trying to manipulate her, but
she's definitely doing some line. She's holding more cards and
she doesn't show her hand either. She's very clearly like
not telling her Oh yeah, we're on this planet and
there's twenty of us, and you know what I mean,
Like she's very strategic and very well like poised, Like

(24:56):
when he mentions Harry, she's like not reacting like oh
my god, it's so sad he died or he's gone now,
you know, like because if somebody mentioned your mentor and
you knew your mentor died, you would have been like,
oh man, that sucks, yeah Harry. But she kept it
cool and collected, and I think that's just it's almost

(25:17):
frightening how much she's changed, how different she is from
that scared little girl on that planet full of water.
And I love that they kind of referenced that whenever
she was in that mind place that she chose to
be surrounded by water.

Speaker 3 (25:31):
Yeah, so I love that. Yeah. It's often that I
forget that she had those jewels in her face, but
you see those scars.

Speaker 2 (25:39):
Yeah, and I sometimes I think, God, does she have
a pimple?

Speaker 3 (25:42):
Yes? Yeah, I'm gonna pick Gail as well, but I
do want to acknowledge.

Speaker 1 (25:47):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (25:47):
I also liked the Ambassador Quinn in this episode. And
Song didn't have a huge part, but she was. She
was consequential. Yeah, and I do love that Song was
wasn't introduced as a character that you thought was going
to be all that important, that she was maybe just
someone to add to Brother Day's story, but she became

(26:08):
a much bigger character.

Speaker 2 (26:09):
She wasn't just a concubine. Yeah, She's a person with
like choices and actions.

Speaker 3 (26:15):
All Right, Well, I think that'll do it for us.
Two awards going to Gail Dornick, a true celebrity that
was so shady. The next episode will least Season three,
episode ten, the finale titled The Darkness. For a long time,
they had only released the titles of the first nine episodes.

(26:37):
There's only like a couple weeks ago that we got
season ten. It's called The Darkness Earth episode ten, which
makes it feel like a black hole is coming. Gail's
vision of being in that blackness will be coming to Fruition.

Speaker 2 (26:50):
All right, let's finish it out. I got to eat,
all right.

Speaker 3 (26:55):
Well, thank you for spacing out with us, and remember
you were a small petty man screaming and pissing with.

Speaker 2 (27:02):
Queem.
