I promised Jerusha that I would notlet the job stress me out this time
around. So instead of me leadingthe meeting, why don't we all lead
the meeting together. Cool. Thatseems much better than you just giving us
the information we need to do ourjob. Welcome to cloud naw Superstore Podcast.

(00:26):
I am Jason and I'm BB andwe're here talking about Floor Supervisor,
which is season six, episode threeof Superstore and this episode aired on November
twelfth, twenty twenty. Written byJosh Malmoth and directed by Betsy Thomas.
And you know who wasn't in thisepisode to have a name tag? Fucking

(00:47):
Amy or Amy. I do lookforward to not mispronouncing all her name tags.
Good. Remember, if you wantto share your thoughts about the episode,
or the show, or anything really, you can email us Superstar podcast
at gmail dot com, send usa message on Facebook or Twitter, and

(01:10):
we will interact with you. Yepfor Supervisor. What did you think?
It was a good episode? Ireally enjoyed it. I think the lack
of Amy is the lack of Amy'scharacter was really nice because she's so annoying.
She's so annoying. You don't needthat, you really don't need it.

(01:30):
Did you feel it was did itfeel like she was missing? No?
No, I never liked her.I like, do you feel like
the show? I don't know. There wasn't like any gap anywhere or something
where, not really like I thinkthe episode previous to this, or maybe

(01:53):
even before. Yeah, where Cheyennewas like you leaving is like me learning
everything and moving forward with my lifewas perfectly acknowledging how little Amy was needed
in this place now, and Iwas happy to see more characters get some
time, like we did see JustineSayid had a little bit of a moment.

(02:17):
Marcus was and that other white guy, I forget his name. I
don't know his name, but he'slike a toxic white man. Yeah.
I was trying to see his nametag during the episode. I didn't get
a peek at it, so Ialways heard his name too, but that
it was good to see like charactersdeveloping. Glenn is back again. Yeah,

(02:40):
so it seems like Glenn is goingto stay manager again, trying not
to be as stressed, and he'snot doing so well. Twice they made
him the manager twice. He's trying. I think, like the fact that
he removed himself from the situation wasa pretty good like at least he's acknowledging
where the stress is at. Andmaybe with Cheyenne that'll help. Maybe,

(03:02):
yeah, maybe, So Glenn givessome power to Mateo. In fact,
maybe I'll start leaning on you tomake some executive decisions around here, you
know, anything to help up withthe old stress. Well, Mateo comes
in with like these decisions that don'tmake any sense to ask somebody in Glenn's

(03:22):
position, like what color to paintthe office, Like, you don't need
to paint the office, for one, it's already painted. Yeah really,
and you're asking or a lot ofmen don't see color the same way as
other people, so it's like hedoesn't give a fucking shit about that,
bro. So it makes you wonderwhy they're repainting it. The colors that

(03:44):
he chose to repaint it are thesame fucking color as the wall that it
is now. Is the thing. It's like a light light blue green or
a light light green blue, andthe walls already like a light blue,
Like leave it alone. I wonderif it's just like in the Cloud nine
budget, when there's a new manager, you can repaint, I should repaint
the break room or something shit.Well, that'd be helping the employees have

(04:08):
a better life. Yeah, corporationsdon't do that, you're right. But
yeah, so Glenn says executive decisionmaking to Mateo, and Matteo like takes
that and runs with it, andtowards the end of the episode, I'm
wondering if he did that on purpose, right, because it works out for

(04:30):
him to well, I don't know. I think he likes the power,
but he also likes the idea ofjust like chilling out and not having any
responsibility at the same time. Yeah, he's very much management type, right.
I think he was in a winwin situation. You're just gonna have
to sit in your office and textyour friends and read those celebrity magazines.
I don't have that much phone data. I will add you to my family

(04:54):
plan. Yeah, but he likestarted making up lies about Glenn so that
he he could tell people like,no, don't even talk to Glenn.
He's having a bad day, right, And he tried to fire Justine yes
and tell her she's banned from shoppingat Cloud nine, and that I think
was the final straw for Glenn, which was fun to see Glenn kind of

(05:15):
stand up for himself on a veryGlenn way. Yeah, but it's also
funny that Mateo is just very openabout his dislike of Justine. I mean
I think he's always been that open. Yeah, he's always yelling at her
about her how she's not actually likea drunk, and she's like, nobody
cares about your stories and we knowyou're not having all this crazy sex or

(05:38):
whatever. Okay, So Garrett andSandra and Tony, Tony is her adopted
son. Yeah, it's good tosee him back. Yeah, he was
shopping for condoms because he has adate with his skater obo girlfriend. And
Sandra's like, you talked him aboutsex because Jerry's too specific and I don't

(06:00):
know what that means, right,And when Garrett asks if it's like anatomical,
I'm like, is it? Whatdo you mean? Specific? Oh?
Jerry, and I knew this daywould come. Yes, ever since
you very recently adopted him, veryinteresting, very curious. I'm curious now.
And then so that leads to like, yeah, initially, like Garrett's

(06:23):
just uncomfortable as talking to some randomseventeen year old. Hey, if you
have any questions about this stuff,I'm happy to talk to you about it
or not. Actually, yeah,I've got a buttload of questions. That's
a lot. But then it becomeslike a very introspective look at like Garrett
and his feelings well about being inlove, and then later pivots to him

(06:46):
looking at Dina. Yeah, soGarrett is able to talk about sex or
hooking up, but when he's askedabout love, Sandra kind of basically calls
him out for being like a ladiesman. Yeah, just seemed like you're
more of a hookup guy, notreally a love guy. So, you
know, it might have been hardto know what to say. And she

(07:09):
does not believe that he's ever hada meaningful relationship in his whole life,
and he's not willing to admit thatthe relationship that was meaningful to him was
the one with Dina. That's Ithink part of it a lot. I'm
really excited for them to kind ofdig into that a little more. Yeah,
that was a surprising turn at theend of the episode that I'm excited

(07:31):
to kind of revisit their feelings.Yeah, that was the relationship that I
really wanted them to really develop insteadof Amy and Jonah, because who fucking
cares about Amy and Jonah. They'reover anyway, so let's look at everybody
else's relationship. So it was reallycool to see him struggling. I mean,

(07:53):
sure, I haven't been in aserious relationship in a long time.
Why because it's just safer to keepthings casual. When you go deep,
you open yourself up to all thesefeelings. What's wrong with feelings? Fair?
I don't know how helpful like itis going to be, but it's
very interesting to see basically like thisteenage boy man, like this young man
who's coming into these new exciting experiencesbut very naive in a lot of ways.

(08:22):
But somehow he's more knowledgeable than Garrett, and Garrett's kind of getting therapy
or something. It's weird because henormally has deep conversations with Jonah, so
he's opening up to another male inhis life. So it's very interesting.
And yeah, it's interesting also tosee this like forty year old. I
didn't know he was forty. Thatblew my mind. Yeah, that they

(08:45):
dropped that, and I don't know, it's not surprising, but it also
is. Yeah. But yeah,so like having this forty year old man
who has not developed emotionally kind ofopening up up in their weird little cafe.
So I don't know, it'll beinteresting and I'm excited to see that.

(09:07):
And it'll be interesting if we continueto see a more vulnerable side of
Garrett because he's always been too coolfor school. Yeah, and I think
that's part of why Sandra and everyoneelse is like, you don't know about
love. You just you know you'rethe hook up guy. Nothing gets to
you. He's a playboy with ashoe fetish. Yeah. Maybe I'm just

(09:28):
self sabotaging, like I'm scared toget invested with someone because I don't want
to get hurt. So do youwant to talk about flourish supervisor? Do
you want to touch on how Brettis the most stylish guy in the store.
Well, we don't need to talkabout that. That's just fast.
Yeah. So the I know, the airdate of all the episodes were pushed

(09:52):
back a week, so I thinkthis would have been originally intended to be
right after the presidential election, butthat shit got dragged out in anyway,
so it's still a little relevant.Yeah. Yeah, So they did plan
kind of an election tie in.We're having an election. Both Jonah and
Cheyenne want to be for a supervisor, So we're going to let the people

(10:13):
decide the people, Glenn, thepeople are idiots. Yeah, it was
good. I liked it. Ilike a good election episode. It was
really funny. Yeah, first theyannounced that there's a floor supervisor position,
and Glenn keeps apologizing about mentioning Amy, specifically to Jonah in front of everybody,
and everybody's like, jeez, Jonah, And I think everyone believes that

(10:37):
he is like just like totally distraughtover this, right. Yeah, so
he might have gotten like a couplepity votes maybe, and he had a
cool idea. But Dina didn't likeany of that shit at all. There
are a lot of policies that couldbe updated or changed altogether, or we

(10:58):
could not change any of the carefullythought out policies I've been honing for the
past decade. She basically hates Jonahtoo, Yeah, because I mean Dina
is like kind of seeing him tryto step into Amy's old rule. I
think not even that, but alsolike Joanah always has ideas about how things
can be different, you know, and he's very vocal, and he's also

(11:24):
always butted heads with Dina on alot of things. No, way.
I don't want a floor supervisor who'sgoing to be constantly contradicting us, poking
holes in our perfect system. SoI can see why she would not want
him at all. So she goesand looks for somebody who she can she
thinks she can manipulate, which isCheyenne, and she kind of gets her,
like at first, she's like,oh, man, that white guy,

(11:46):
someone who isn't a white male thatreads a privilege. Yeah, but
it's hard though, right because oflike systemics. She like, Sheyenne's like,
well, Brett's a good option. And then who else does she say?
I don't know if she suggests anyoneelse. I think she just does
not pick up on the clue thatshe should run. Oh hey, you

(12:07):
know what, maybe I should apply? Yes, Diane, I was laying
it on pretty thick, and shelooks so cute in this episode with her
red, white and blue kind ofaesthetic going. Her lips were super red
and her eyeshadow was super blue, and her shirt had like stripes on it.
It was super cute. So Ireally like that vibe. And Dina

(12:28):
gives her like the worst advice thatkind of works in this store, which
is to lie and bribe. Ohyeah, if I promise things, won't
I have to do those things onceI'm elected? God no, why not?
No one knows? You just don'tAmerica rules. Like Jonah calls her
out and Dina's like, what thesepeople are dumb? She like straight up

(12:52):
just tells everybody they're dumb, whichkind of facts. And then the fact
that like Marcus is supporting Jonah ispart of his downfall. I mean,
yeah, okay, look, guys, let's not make this about cancel culture.
Come on, man, help mehelp you. They pull out the

(13:15):
picture of Jonah at a Hooters, but I like that they didn't brand it
right because those girls usually have likea Hooters T shirt. Yes that's true.
Yeah, I noticed, and mostpeople didn't have really an issue with
it initially until like Dina try tospin it as he's not a feminist.

(13:37):
But the thing that really got thecrowd against Jonah was when he said he
didn't get the wings and he ordereda caprizy salad. Hooters had a kaprize
salad on the menu. They madeit special for me. Come on,
you're yourself. The worst part ofthe story because that's the most Jonah thing
to do order off menu and havethe make of a fucking salad for you

(14:01):
special. That's when said had thebest line. He's like this guy,
like he just kind of expresses everythingwe felt about Jonas since he came in.
You know, boobs are not eventhe first thing that I notice.
What is personality this guy. Ohand when he tries to like get ideas

(14:24):
from the new girl and she's like, I like the breadstick idea, Yeah,
naya, I'm glad that she's stillaround and that she wasn't just used
for like the one off joke lastepisode. Yeah. And then there was
also like her whole thing about whatHooters does. The problem is that Hooters
promotes a misogynistic belief system that womenare sex objects whose primary function is literally

(14:46):
serve men. So that was likea really good dialogue coming from a newbie.
So I really enjoyed that, Likethat was a big line for someone
we just met. Fuck, yeah, I love that. See this is
why it's so exciting not to havethis like major sock factor. I mean

(15:07):
whatever, I don't care if youdon't like if you like Amy, you
can go watch her and some othershit. America Ferrera makes more than this
show. Okay, I'm just I'mexcited to see this develop But yeah,
they have their election. Do youwant to talk any more about the pre
election stuff? Like not really.I mean Dina's argument for a Cheyenne that

(15:30):
she gives the Glenn was actually prettyvalid. Like she's been through all this
management training because Amy put her throughall that. Mm hmm. She's been
there a while. She knows thejob, she knows the people. She
said herself, like she knows whatshe's doing. Just so you know,
I would be a great floor supervisor. Okay, I've been here forever.
I get along with everybody, andI know who's boned who and who can't

(15:50):
work together. I loved when theywere like, let's just have a debate
and Dina like totally outs herself inher intentions and how Cheyenne just does not
back down. Yep. That wasiconic. That was like, now,
fuck you, I ain't doing whatyou say. We need shit to change.
Jonah tries to like say I hadthat idea, and he's like,

(16:11):
no, wait, no, Irespect women. That was so good.
I love it when people like sitthemselves down. You don't need to be
sat down by somebody else. Ohthat was so good. I actually said
the same never mind, I respectwomen, I don't interrupt them. And
she comes through with the breadsticks evenif they're a day old. Yeah,
but if you microwave them with awet paper towel, I didn't know that.

(16:36):
That's pretty good. So yeah,Cheyenne wins. Matteo tried to like
rig the election too, right. It's like, damn, dude, you
are so sneaky sometimes, and there'sa bit like it would be kind of
nice for Mateo to have like asay in the management role, but if

(16:56):
you give him a little bit ofpower, he seems to just take it
all. Yeah, he's very powerhungry and it always goes to his head
time and time again. Anytime he'sin a position, he goes all out,
which is not bad. Sometimes itcomes out really well, you know,
like that time he like did thesame sex marriage aisle that was iconic.

(17:17):
But yeah, but he's on Glenn'sfamily plan now. So no,
yes, Chyenne won the election, but Matteo won the day he won.
Like the dream job, just sitin your office and text your friends.
Have you ever use an apple bong? H? Yeah? The have you
ever used a coconut bong. Nosounds fancy. Yeah, it's so cool

(17:44):
because it comes with water. Yeah, and it's not technically an apple bong.
It's like an apple pipe, true, so, but it is a
coconut bong. Anything else you wantto talk about for this episode? The
floor manager, I want to sharea message from Twitter we got from mo.
I really hope they stop all theAmy callbacks, at least for Bbe's

(18:06):
sake. Yes, thank you.Sorry that I was such a bitch about
it, but like, yeah, let her be gone. It's okay.
Yeah, I mean they have totransition for a while, and yeah,
yeah, make note of her absenceto keep coming up. Especially guys Jonah's

(18:33):
processing and figuring out what he's doingwith his life. I want him to
go through a whole phase or rememberKelly. Yeah, bring Kelly back in
the little Girl. Ye a littlechick. She's so tiny. Yeah,
it'd be really good to see likesomething happening over there. Or he like
completely plummets and he like actually likehooks up with Justy. Let's not let's

(19:00):
do that. Let's just ruin himrock bottom, scruffy, dirty wear sweatpants
to work the whole thing and evenJustine has to let him go because he's
too much. He's like no,She's like, I'm too good for this
shit. That would be cool.Just really want to see him fall or
he goes back to business school orsomething, you know, takes night classes

(19:23):
because he didn't finish right right,No, he's got options. Yeah.
Do you think Carol's gonna go crazyanytime soon? She's pretty tamo. She
was tame in this episode. Yeah. I feel like they don't want to
send her back to crazy right away. Yeah, she's I just love when
they do that with her though,or nasty when she's nasty, Like remember

(19:48):
when she would hit on Adam.It would be cool to see Adam in
the store if they were gonna doAmy callbacks or whatever. I wonder how
is YouTube channels going? Okay,Well, what's what else is on your
little thing? E there? Well, thanks both for keeping me in mind

(20:11):
about those Amy callbacks. They weren'tbad. I was able to stomach it
because I didn't have to deal withher. I threw together a list of
some other sitcoms where the main characterhad left the show. The Office yet
The Office was first on the list. Tears right, they switched Diane for

(20:33):
right. Yeah, what else thatseventies show? Oh that was terrible.
Yeah, they had that once EricForeman left it was just trash. Yeah,
that was a show that they triedto bring in a new character and
act like he's just part of thegang and no. Yeah, they should
have done that sooner. Yeah. And also Ashton Kutcher left that show at
the same time. Oh yeah,it's like that's a show that went downhill

(20:59):
quick. Look of that. TheOffice. I kind of felt like that
show was losing quality before Steve Carellleft. Yeah, I think the like,
yeah, but they kind of pickedup after after Robert California. We
did not mess well with the butI'd like that he didn't because I think

(21:19):
he was so different and so weirdthat it like completely like just yeah,
it refocused everything. So that wasgood. It wasn't the worst. When
Andy was in charge, that wasjust weird. Spen City Did you ever
watch that? Uh? Is thatwith Michael J. Fox? Yep?

(21:40):
Yeah, who left? Michael J. Fox? He left and Charlie Sheen
swooped in. Oh my god.Oh yeah that one. They actually I
think they did recover pretty well.Yeah, that one was decent. I
don't know how the fuck Charlie Sheenis such a trash ass human. Well,
speaking of him, he left Twoand a Half Men and Ashton Kutcher

(22:00):
joined that show, and I neverreally watched that, and I don't think
it's been it was ever like acritical hit, but it was definitely Yeah,
everybody fucking loved it. I workedat a nursing home at the time
when it was like Poppin and everybodyloved that show. I had one old
woman who would love like I hadto put her to bed after that show

(22:25):
was done. During Everybody Loves Raymond, couldn't say it for Raymond, she
was like that was her bedtime, like she knew it was bedtime because like
it was Raymond. But yeah,Charlie Sheen is like a trash ass human
who somehow is able to pull offcharismatic womanizer on TV. Really well,
like he's he's not bad on TV. Well, I think maybe he's like

(22:51):
an actor of his time, Likehe had a moment where he peeked and
then we all saw his downfall withthe hooker and the coke, the Tiger
Blood any other shows? What abouteight Simple Rules? Oh Man? John
Ridd died yeah, oh man, that was so sad. I watch a
lot of TV, y'all. Ireally liked that show. The Redhead had

(23:15):
such big ass chits. Oh mygod, the redad stits were great.
It's like that's inappropriate, but yeah, I watched a little bit of that
show when it was on. Hewent so good at he was so good.
He was such a good dad.I remember like it brought in David
Spade and uh oh, who's theolder guy? I forget? You don't

(23:37):
have it in your notes. Noscrubs, they're awful last season the University
one. Yeah, and I don'tknow how fair that one is because they
definitely like wrapped up the show seasoneight, they wrapped up. They should
have wrapped it up. When theyall went to that destination wedding, that's
when it should have been over. That's literally they jumped the shark. Okay,

(24:02):
that's when you jump the shark. When you have a destination episode and
they're all in like some tropical island, that's that's it. You're dead,
you're done, it's over. Letit go. The crew got a nice
trip, you know, to anexotic location. Just call it good.
They all died on a ship theend. They had a really good wrap
up for the season eight finale, and they kind of left you like feeling

(24:26):
good about all the characters and likespeculating about their future and stuff. And
then they forced that. Then theybrought it back and had like the main
cast kind of making guest appearances.I liked the actors that were in it,
but the storyline was just Hella forced. It should have just been an
independent thing with new people, rightthat, Like, we didn't need all

(24:48):
of the Scrubs people in it.It was just lame. Plus, that's
why we have cougar Town, right, Okay, anything else, anyone any
other episodes or shows. I putdown Community, but I was kind of

(25:11):
like, I don't really know howto define who's the main character on Community.
They all seem to share the spotlight. I think initially it was Jeff
Winger. Yeah, he's definitely likein the pilot and first season, but
he drove most of the community too. Yeah, but then after that it
kind of depends on the episode.Yeah, I guess, but I don't

(25:32):
know. Donald Glover left that andChevy Chase, and I was glad to
see Chevy go. It was kindof funny how they killed him off because
I heard he was a dick,so good riddance. Yeah, but yeah,
Community is a good show. Likeyou should definitely watch whatever's available.
I'm a huge fan. Yeah,love Community. I went to a community

(25:55):
college and I watched it like asit aired on like network team when I
was in community college. So itwas definitely formative to my career in community.
That's all I wrote. Yeah, that's all the shows that I can
think of that I actually was engagedwith. I didn't really engage with Spin

(26:17):
City though, to be honest.Yeah, I mean some shows do well
with the change and some definitely don't. I feel like, if you are
a showrunner and you put all ofyour story plot lines around one specific character,
you have to make sure that youkeep that actor happy and well paid.

(26:42):
Otherwise, if it's something that youthink like you could lose them,
you should definitely create good, strong, supporting characters that could potentially carry the
show to a new era, becauseit's possible. I do believe that it
is possible, but you have toreally like build up characters because like an

(27:03):
Orange is the New Black. Ilove using this as an example because they
did it so well that white ladyfrom the first episode. She could leave
and that show could still be good. I mean, now it's kind of
I don't know, I didn't reallywatch the last season that that was really
good. Like storytelling for their end, you shouldn't centralize it on one character

(27:26):
when you have the opportunity to builda diverse cast and have a lot of
different story narratives just going on.It also lets your audience know that they're
not dumb, you know, LikeI watch Bones and I love Bones,
but it's just very like formulaic.Everything gets wrapped up at the end.

(27:48):
There's not a lot of progress orconflict. But I don't know, I'm
just like I would like to seelike television or whatever it is now streaming
figure out ways to include more peopleand maybe you don't have like one character

(28:10):
that gets more money or more time. I think it's definitely more common now,
maybe not with comedy as much, but with like drama shows that there's
more of an ensemble and it's likelarger casts, and it wasn't really feasible
I think economically during earlier decades oftelevision. Yeah, I mean, there's

(28:33):
always got to be the one personthat draws the crowd, right like a
familiar name and face that really helps. Yeah, but I think if you
don't give an opportunity to know names, then what are you doing, Like,
it's not fun for anybody to seenew faces, you know, fall
let us fall in love with newpeople. Well, it's nice to like
meet a character for the first timeand not have some preconception because of other

(28:57):
roles you've seen the actor in.Yeah, and usually, like I'm thinking
of like Cougar Town or whatever, where it's like, we know Courtney Cox
and she basically plays herself in adifferent like on a different level, but
she's still very much like that funny, skinny bitch, and so it's just

(29:18):
like I like that she's in it, but I also think, like probably
anybody could have played that. Idon't know. I like that show a
lot, though, Oh my god, they've had to fight so hard to
get like new seasons too, ButI don't know, it's always fun to
think about. I love looking upshows on like Wikipedia, and they have
the graph of the cast members andlike what seasons they're in as main cast

(29:41):
or recurring cast guest appearances. Yeah, you're you know in that little section
that says stats for nerds. That'swhere Jason, it's me. Okay,
So next week episode is called PrizeWheel. Sounds fun, it sounds dangerous.

(30:02):
Oh did you notice that they tooktheir masks down sometimes to talk.
Yeah, that was interesting. Seemslike the employees are just interacting without masks,
but when they're out in the storethey're wearing them mostly. But I
also noticed that, like when Garrettwas talking to Tony Tony, they were

(30:22):
not wearing masks. So hmmmmm,we'll see. Hopefully they keep them on
because I don't mind them wearing themin the store. I think it's really
important that we get that visual reinforcement. Uh huh, that's I think that's
super important for us, and itkind of just normalizes it. Yes,
exactly, and I would love tosee that more so hopefully this next episode.

(30:48):
Oh and the lady who was wearingthe mask and trying to sniff the
candles. H I missed those littlescenes in that last episode. We didn't
really get those customer scenes. Gota couple, but yeah, I missed
dumblass customer scenes. I'm glad shedidn't pull the mask down, so that
was really nice. All right,Well, next episode airs November nineteenth Prize.
