And how can we pull out allsorts of decorations for Saint Patrick's Day?
And we don't do anything for Juneteenth. Leprechauns were never slaves, except to
the wrong greed. Welcome to Cloudnine, a Superstore podcast. I'm Jason

(00:24):
and I'm bb and we're back, back back again. New episode. This
aired on January fourteenth, twenty twentyone. It's called Hair Care Products,
written by Dioetta Soakin and directed byCharles Stone the Third, whoh the Third.
You have any thoughts about the episodethat you want to share, you
can reach us at Superstore podcast atgmail dot com or find us on Facebook

(00:48):
or Twitter, and we'd be happyto include your comments in the podcast.
Yeah, it was a long break, it was, and a lot's changed
since we last recorded. We're thenew apartment again, so hopefully it's not
The sounds not too different. Yeah, we're sitting a lot close to each

(01:08):
other and we're not looking at eachother. We're like looking the same direction.
Yeah, we're at a bar.Yeah. Then we also we got
some news to cover. I thinkwe'll probably do that at the end.
Okay, yeah, but hair careProducts, how do you want to jump
into it? What is the phrase. It's like not with a crash or
a bang, but with a whimper. They had Glenn's away because he had

(01:34):
COVID. He's quarantine. Yeah, and so Dina's doing morning announcements and they're
not in the warehouse or their breakroom. I'm assuming we're in health and beauty
because the raccoons finally claim the warehouse. I like it here. It's well
as like confident Women because corporate isdoing the bare minimum and unlocking the black
hair care products. That was prettycool of corporate to fix it. Oh

(01:56):
yeah, it takes a lot ofcourage to make a gesture this small,
this late in the game, which, to be honest, I didn't know
was a thing in like stores becauseI go to, like, if I'm
gonna be encountering black hair care,I usually see it out in the open,
or I'm going to like a beautysupply store that caters specifically too black
hair care. So I'd never noticedanything like locked up. Usually they locked

(02:20):
up the wigs because those were likeexpensive. I think it's because they think
black people are going to steal them. Yeah, we have to ask for
the key. It's like a walkof shame. Every time you need Argona.
Well, but yeah, they they'redoing the bare minimum. And I
believe that they would do that becausethey do that with a bunch of random
shit at the stores, like thingsthey think people will steal or have been
known to take. I didn't knowhair care products were on that list,

(02:43):
to be honest. I think hygieneproducts in general do get stolen a lot.
I know I seen razors, butI thought it was because people like
sharp objects. Well people do.But yeah, they were doing the bare
minimum, and the black employees werelike, about damn time, rightfully,
so dialogues. Well, the whitepeople were like, we fixed it.

(03:06):
We saw racism in the store.Yeah, and Garrett. This was a
very Garrett centered episode, which wasexciting. Yeah, so Garrett is kind
of forced to lead this movement inthe store. They push him into it.
Yeah, for sure. He getspushed in by Dina and Jonah,
his two white friends, and they'reboth well meaning in their own ways.

(03:27):
It's kind of fun how much Jonahwas like not centering himself. Centering the
fact that he was not centering himselfhas been weird and annoyed all day,
but at least he's tried to helpout without putting the burden on me.
Oh wow, yeah, well thanks. Decentering takes a little practice, but
I think I'm getting better at it. You know, I just have a
tendency to make things about myself. He's trying, he is, that's a

(03:52):
this is a Jonah. I don'tmind seeing it kind of harkens back to
his original persona when he first started. So that was kind of nice to
see that kind of like self righteoussocial justice warrior kind but doing the most
well, saying that you're not doinganything to try to take away like people's

(04:13):
like space. Like the interaction hehad with the new lady Nia, Nia,
Yeah, he was like trying sohard. He like kept looking back,
Oh sorry, Nia, did youdid you want to say something?
No? Are you sure? BecauseI don't want to make this about me.
If if you've if you've got something, I don't want to make it
about you either. But I don'thave anything. And then the other lady

(04:38):
was talking about supporting black businesses.I got on it about that. It's
like, uh, that was good. I don't know. I thought it
was funny because a lot of wellmeaning white people do that. They're like
stepping on their own toes trying toget out of the way. Yeah,
what else. Glenn's also trying tobe well meaning throwing that pizza party for

(05:01):
so Glenn is being well meaning bybothering somebody. And like the thing is
like with Garrett getting in charge ofthis, like why didn't you ask to
be paid for that labor? Becausethat should have been the first thing.
Like if you really want to talkabout, like, oh, you want
me to do this project or youwant me to make this thing that's outside
of my job description. And heliterally tells you what his job description is.

(05:24):
It's not my job to call outevery racist thing I come up against.
It's my job to announce sales andpretend not to notice when people return
you swimsuit. So if you're gonnamake me do that, you should pay
me. And I wish they wouldhave touched on that a little. And
I think they kind of tried alittle, but not really. They didn't
really because I think sometimes things needto be really spelled out when it comes
to that. Yeah, And Ithought it was funny when that one guy

(05:46):
thought he was Dominican because he couldbe Dominicans are black. That so funny
when he said it the I don'tknow. It was a funny episode to
me just because I saw like whitepeople sweating. Yeah, and it's it's
true what Garrett says, like it'snot his job to keep track of all
this and point it out all thetime, like being exhausting. Yeah,

(06:10):
he has a job that he's paidthe due. Yeah. And then when
he does the meeting where everybody's theretrying to like add things to the list,
which he should have done that.I think the second meeting he had
with just the black employees was alot more productive for everybody there. But
in the first meeting, like itturns into him just sharing stories of like

(06:32):
the black struggle and like all theway people consume this is so toxic,
and that's illustrated really well in this. I like that. That was his
friend's suggestion, Dina was like, tell us a story about how terrible it
is to be a prison of color. Then everyone really wants to they scoot
in during a pandemic, it's amurder podcast or something racist story time gather

(06:58):
around. Everybody would go oh wellno, no, no, don't actually
scoot in. What did you thinkabout that meeting? It was it was
a lot they do a good jobin these big meetings of having like every
character like coming at this from theirown perspective, and it's usually pretty funny.
You know. You got Justine andher black voice. Oh my god,
they called out Justine. It wasfunny. How about Justine trying to

(07:21):
sound black and when she talks toblack people, Oh, that's how you're
going to do me. And you'vegot Isaac and Earl that are very much
like toxic white guys. Yeah,Isaac really wanted to touch what was her
name, Janet Janet? They areJanet. Yeah, he really wanted to
touch Janet's hair. He was.It was just awkward. I couldn't imagine

(07:45):
to have to work with that kindof shit sometimes. But yeah, there
was no Marcus. That was interesting. Yeah, maybe he got sick with
the rona too. He already didthough, Oh you could get sick again.
Or maybe he had something else.Yeah, I don't know. It's
hard to think of what to sayabout all their discussion, but like it
was, it was a good episode. Like it was a very good They
brought up a lot of important stuffand it was really like, because we

(08:09):
didn't have this other plotline, itlike strictly focused on experiences people of color
having in the workplace, and theyeven included Cheyenne, Mateo, and Sandra
in the conversation and how their Asianfeatures or whatever caused them to experience a

(08:31):
different type of racism in the store. And then it was funny because they
had this other subplot with Cheyenne andMatteo and Sandra, so there's even like
a little bit of like tension inthere. So when Sandra was talking about
being Hawaiian, they they had alittle bit of something to say about that
too, which is funny, likeengaging, and like, obviously she's not

(08:56):
Asian like them, She's Pacific islanderor whatever. You know, people are
different, they come from different placesand that's okay, And that was kind
of a cool way to include likesome of the things that are happening to
people who have those features. Though, but then everybody wanted to go to
the pizza party, okay. Soyeah, Glenn was like, how can

(09:18):
I make it so that the blackemployees that my store feel like I care
about them and I don't want themto have a bad time at work,
and obviously to show them that I'mnot racist against them, And his solution
for all those problems was to buya buttler to pizza. Yeah. I
decided to buy pizzas for all theblack employees as reparations for the hair care

(09:43):
products. You got us pizza.Pizzas bettered than nothing. Honestly, that
feels really on point without corporations ormanagement think about how you can like pacify
this group or reward them or feellike, you know whatever. It's like
that's a go to thing to likereward people in a corporate environment. Yes,

(10:07):
it's pizza. Yeah, we hitour quotas, we were doing great
or you know, our customers arebeing real dicks this quarter, so they
give us pizza. We made millionsof dollars, We're going to spend a
couple hundred on pizza. Yeah. And so it was supposed to go to

(10:28):
Garrett to decide who gets in andwho doesn't. So make sure that every
black employee gets some pizza. Andif there any borderline calls, well you
get final set and it becomes likethe Oppression Olympics for people of color and
those with disabilities. Even so,it was interesting to see like the diversity

(10:50):
that they actually have in store.Yeah, and it was interesting, No
pun intended but like how it's notblack and white, and like the black
people are getting pizza, but likedo these people count, like or who
are you including in this group?Yeah? What does oppression mean in the
space in this environment? And Idon't know. I think they kind of

(11:13):
weeded themselves out for the most part, for if you didn't like you'd know,
you don't get pizza, like obviously, But then there were like Isaac
and what's his bucket? Yeah, earl, earl, Yeah, those two
guys wanted pizza and they complained aboutwanting pizza. So Glenn gets them pizza.
And that really, like I thinkthat Shakescaret up to actually speak on

(11:37):
how he feels about things to apoint where it's like good that he released
all that, because it would havebeen bad if like they didn't have any
sort of release from him at theend of that day. So that was
really interesting. And then like atthe end they had their little Kumbaya moment
where like the white people were like, here's pizza. It's just like okay,

(12:01):
so you're just trying to reinforce thatthe white people at the superstore are
terrible, thank you, Like they'retrying they're well meaning, so there's no
bad guys here. It was thatfor me anyway. It's also funny because
it's like, no, Garrett lovespizza, yeah, I mean yeah,
like he loves snack foods and videogames and like, yeah, I could

(12:24):
see so for him to call backfor the pizza at the end, Siddy
was never about the pizzas. Okay, so it's still not about the pizzas,
but he would like me to grabthe pizzas. So I like that.
That was fun. It was agood episode. Yeah. I think
Superstore does a really good job andit's probably gotten a lot better at handling

(12:45):
these big issues like systemic racism inthe workplace and still being a sitcom that's
funny. Oh yeah, I laughedreally good. Making light of health seriously
issue is at the same time,it's like it's a crazy thing to have
to and the writing and performance andthey do it well. I think they
understand a part of it where it'slike if you don't laugh, you'll cry,

(13:07):
and that's where comedy kind of sits. It's like on the edge of
tragedy so many times that's when weseek to laugh a lot of us and
so I think it's a because itcomes from the truth as well, Like
you can tell that there were diversevoices sitting at the table when this conversation
was happening, and that was good. Like they talked about microaggressions and they

(13:28):
talked about like issues within the communitiessometimes where like we disagree on like what
black traits are here, like thatfucking onion sour cream with onion shit.
Well, that one affects me andmy brother because I hate sour queen in
onion. Yeah, but that's moreof a you thing, not a black

(13:48):
thing. I'm pretty sure that's ablack thing. I think it was cool,
like and it was interesting to watchand I liked it. I also
really like the Sandra and Matteo andthey're business about having like a social distancing
get together that they weren't going toinvite Sandra to. But then it turns
out to be a thing that onlySandra gets to go to. Sandra and

(14:11):
Matteo nice. So it's just gonnabe me you Sandra outside your apartment watching
her be fully loaded. Yeah,oh shoot, I forgot I have something
on Friday. I like how shecalled them out though, Like I was
wondering about that where she's like, your mask thing is not very tight,

(14:33):
so I'm not going to go therewith you. Yeah, because that first
scene where we saw Sandra or JyannaMateo, like they had no mask on
when they're in the middle of thestore. Yeah, and I was wondering
about that, like, Okay, they're just playing fast and moves with the
rules on the show, I guess. But then Sandra calls them out.
Yeah, so that was nice.I noticed you guys are pretty cash with

(14:54):
your COVID safety us WHOA. Soyeah, I liked that episode. Is
there anything want to say about itin your notes and stuff? No,
not really. I think it wasgood. You should watch it. Yeah,
and I really like it. WithoutAmy, it would have been a
very different episode with it. Shewould have centered it around her. She

(15:16):
would have been the white Latina orthe beige Latina. I'm sorry because she's
not white. I know that she'snever gonna be white, but she would
have really a lot of like, well, guys, I don't know,
she's Yeah, it would just bea lot of that. And then like
because she yeah, I mean, okay, she wasn't there. She's just

(15:37):
not my favorite. Maybe I'm paintingher more racist than I should. But
a Latina who's dated so many whiteguys in Missouri, what would her experience
be with like, because she wasprobably right there, like being very passive
about the hair care. Yeah,I think she's holding the keys too,
you know what I mean. Shewould be very hesitant to take action or

(15:58):
to to believe that there's actually likeracist things happening and not just coincidences.
Like think about when she went toapply for that job and it was all
Latina women and she was like indenial that that's what they were doing.
Yeah. Yeah, she would beghost lighting the law or whatever it's called.
What do they call it? Gaslighting? That one? Ghost lighting is

(16:21):
when you shut the lights off inthe theater and it's just the ghost light.
What I didn't know that. Okay, well maybe she wouldn't gaslight all
the way. But that's the thing, Like it's when she's around, it's
always about her and her journey.Yeah, and it's just like and I'm
glad Glenn wasn't there for that either, to be honest, because his journey

(16:41):
was boring too. So yeah,it was a good episode. Do you
think back to season one when theyhad that episode with the salsa they're trying
to sell No. I was alsothinking back about like all the really shitty
jokes they made about sexual assault too, like oh yeah, yeah, they
just they've grown and it's a goodgrowth and it's nice to see what And

(17:04):
I'm sad if I hope they canget like more episodes with this cast because
I really like Kim. We're almosta Yemma, the new one, the
new girl, the short hair,Nia Nia Nia. I don't know why
I can't remember her name. Iswear she's the lady from the MTV YouTube
series Decoded. She reminds me ofthat lady. I think her name is

(17:26):
Francesca. You can check me onthat if I'm wrong, then if you're
wrong, I'll cut it from theepisode. But yeah, but it's cool
to see this cast. I likethem. Yeah, the show has definitely
grown and is able to tackle issuesin a much better way than I'm interested
to see what other things are goingto come up with. Well, you

(17:47):
want to talk about some news,Yeah, let's do news. Show's canceled.
I figured how many more episodes becausenow they're just like fuck it,
we're canceled. We're gonna take iton. But yeah, they announced this
is going to be the last seasonof the show, and season six is
only gonna have fifteen episodes, asopposed to the usual twenty two, which

(18:08):
you'll give us a total of onehundred and thirteen episodes of Superstore. That's
a lot of episodes, it is. So, I was a little surprised
at the cancelation, but not thatsurprised, I guess. Yeah, I
mean, yeah, I like it. I'm sorry. I'm sad to see
it go because it would have beencool to see more pandemic episodes. Well,

(18:30):
it almost makes Amy's departure like notas meaningful because it's like she's gonna
be gone for a few episodes.I'm sure she'll come back for the finale.
You think, so, oh,that's so annoying. I'm sure she
will, and there'll be some sortof conclusion of like her and Jonah's relationship.
So yeah, it's a bit ofa bummer. But at the same

(18:51):
time, I'm like, we gotsix seasons of the show and six seasons
in a movie. Oh, Idon't know about that. What you don't
think there should be a Superstar movie? Maybe? Yeah, So, I
mean, anyway, six years ofthe show is a good run and it's
it'll be fun to watch it again, and it's not like a short thing,
you know, you get a lotto go through. Yeah, it's
a good show to watch over again. I still can't believe how many people

(19:12):
don't know it's a show or they'vehurt vaguely heard a bit, yeah,
which is okay, Like, fine, you don't have to watch Superstore,
but it'd be cool if you did, because I feel like a lot of
people would enjoy it and stick withit through the first season. Yeah,
because then it gets really good withdecent two doesn't anyway. Any other news

(19:33):
they're sure is and I don't thinkyou know about this at all, but
they have announced that they're working ona spin off what Old Bow and Cheyenne.
I thought you'd be more excited byit. No, that's not the
spin off I wanted. I hopeMateo comes on board since they're best friends

(19:57):
forever. I don't know, couldhave been different, It could have been
Garrett. Yeah, I don't knowmuch about it, and it's still it's
like it's in development, so it'snot necessarily a sure thing. We'll see.
I don't know. BO hasn't beenon in a long time. Yeah,
it's an interesting choice because like who'sthe audience for this show? Like

(20:18):
if Superstore was like doing well enough, they wouldn't have canceled it. So
they've got to be reaching for morethan just Superstore fans. It's probably like
you know, those kids on TikTok, that's what Probably that's the only audience
you can really grab that's new forthis area. Well, they're trying to
do like a family sitcom with bouCheyenne and Harmonica like Reba two point zero

(20:45):
and then I mean you can onlyspeculate from here, but like you know,
they is she still going to workat Cloud nine? Do you think
they're going to interact with some ofthe cast members as like guest stars are
I think that's what I would do, since you already know you have a
talented pool of actors that people arefamiliar with. But it's having Bo every

(21:06):
episode going to be overkill, That'swhat I'm thinking, because that character is
just it's good when it's like likevery scarce, like you know, yeah,
very sporadic, very because he's likealways at eleven. He's just got
a lot of high energy and Iknow I've seen him in other shows where
he's not like that, but hedoes have this like face that's just too

(21:29):
weird. Sometimes you just like can'tlook at it all the time. Chyanne's
really cool, and I hope theymake her character more developed because she has
She's developed some, but I feellike there's still a lot of room to
grow, which is why it's kindof that's the only part that's engaging me.
Yeah, because like Bo, yeah, I don't know, he's fun.

(21:51):
There would be a lot of roomfor growth on his character. Yeah.
I just wish that they could, like, yeah, find a way
to like show how they could besustainably goofy, because I don't want to
be worried about them like not feedingtheir baby, yeah, or like having
their lights shut off or you know, oh, we don't have a toaster
because it became a fire hazard becauseof some stupid shit that we were doing

(22:15):
because we're too stupid. I don'tlike that. I would rather see like
Bo trying to do something like maybehe is trying to do TikTok for like
an income, because that's what somepeople are trying to do, while Cheyenne
is like trying to like be doingsomething else. I don't know, because
she was doing horror movie makeup fora while. She was really good at

(22:37):
that. What was that one episodewhere she was just really good? She
was like in a leadership position.Did not happen? She's the floor supervisor,
that's it. Yeah, So likeif they developed that here, that
would help transition into a show too, where she's like figuring out does she
want to be a floor supervisor ornot? Are they going to keep the

(22:57):
set? I don't know, likeare they going to show or at the
workplace. It's all just wild rightnow, and I feel like we're being
really critical of a show we knownothing about. No No, But I
just thought it was interesting that thosewere the two characters they decided to follow
in a spinoff. Yeah. Well, I would have loved a Sandral.
I mean, they're kind of theyoung family, I guess. I mean,

(23:18):
what about Sandra and Jerry, thoughmaybe they'll be neighbors. Could you
imagine that'd be great with their adulthigh school son. Well he's not an
adult, but he's like seventeen pushingeighteen soon anyway, So that's I mean,
something to look forward to after theshow ends. Hopefully, hopefully they
get some wings if it sees it. Hopefully it'd be like next television season.

(23:41):
Yeah, that'd be cute, andI feel like we would definitely be
covering it on this show. Thenyeah, we'll see it if it comes
out for sure. Do you haveany thoughts on cancelation or the spin off
show? Let us know, emailus or hit us up on the social
media is Yeah, tell us yourspeculations because I have so many. Also,

(24:06):
like a lot of the cast putout statements about the cancelation of the
show and kind of how much theshow meant to them, especially like some
of the characters. We're talking abouthow nice it was to have representation.
Yeah, yeah, it is reallynice, and it is like, that's
what I'm going to miss about theshow, is like seeing all the different
people working because they were working. But I think that's all we have for

(24:29):
this episode. Unless you have anyfinal thoughts, read a book and shut
the fuck up. That's all.Next episode is called Biscuit, Biscuit,
that's all. It's fun. Ilove biscuits. I hope it's about a
horse or something. Though. That'sgoing to air on January twenty first,
twenty twenty one, and there areonly ten more episodes wow a countdown.

(24:52):
Indeed, I really hope they justliterally like just go super hard with their
like social justice agenda, like theyjust like keep drilling things there. Fuck
yes, Like if you know thisis this is the platform, Like you're
gonna go out regardless, so mightas well go out real strong. I
just hope the sensors don't catch themor you know what I mean, like

(25:15):
people who edit things down or waterit down, because I feel like this
could be like the best ten episodesthe show will ever have, Like this
one's already starting strong. Yeah,and I don't know. I hope they
do get to ring me and Jonah. Let them leave Bartley, I'm just
done with both of them. Orbring back Kelly. We are bringing back

(25:36):
Kelly. I know she better comeback next episode. I'm ready to see
her. It's not next episode.I think it's the one following. Oh
yeah, how do you know?Oh my gosh, are you like Clairoyant?
Yes? I was there. Isecretly work for Superstore. Oh my
god. Okay, now people aregonna believe that, But if you want
to hire him for the other show, he is available. At the end

(26:03):
of this podcast, I'm when revealed, I'm actually the creator of the shut
up. I'm going home, I'mbye. That's a plot twist. Bye.
