Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is Matten, Nick Jackson the Young Bucks, and you're
listening to sports guys talking wrestling. One sweet me the breakdown.
When they're not covering the sports world, they're talking about
the world or professional wrestling. It's sports guys talking wrestling.
(00:22):
Now here's Stu Myrick. It is sports guys talking wrestling.
Stu Myrick here. Thank you so much for joining me.
It was a busy wrestling weekend this past weekend. You
had aw double nothing. You had ww Saturday Night's made
(00:43):
event and to help me recap it all, joining me
on the hotline from One True Sport. A dear friend
of mine, hosts Rob Van Dam podcast, host podcasts for
Greg Ganya Magneta, and just a great guy all around.
It is Dominic DiAngelo. Dom How are you, man?
Speaker 2 (01:04):
It's always great to chop it over with you, one
of my favorite people in the business, to chat it
up and talk a little wrestling and talk a little
outside stuff sports. We're just talking about some Dallas and
Texas and all that stuff.
Speaker 1 (01:14):
Now, you know, I'm up up here in Fort Worth,
so I'm just you know, I'm about about twenty twenty
five minutes from globeal It Field, where all in Texas
will be on July twelfth. Let's start with AW double
or Nothing happened this past Sunday in Glendale, Arizona, just
outside of Phoenix. Give me a letter grade for AW
(01:35):
double or Nothing twenty twenty five.
Speaker 2 (01:37):
Sure, I think I'll give it a B A B.
I'll give it a B because and I would give
it an A if it was shorter. That was it,
Like that's my you know, because I think just naturally
I understand and you know, we know what we're getting
when we watched AW pay review and the length of
it all and everything like that. But I do think
(01:58):
it's a detriment to the overall presentation of the show,
keeping fans engage and things like that. I uh, you
minimize your your reach. I think when you have such
a long show, it's so. But I mean the matches
were great, the the aesthetic and feel and the energy
was great too overall, like I and so in that way,
(02:21):
I'm contradicting what I'm saying because it was good energy,
but it was ultimately I think, a great show. I
just think it gets hurt a little bit by the
length of it alls too.
Speaker 1 (02:32):
You know, And I'm I'm with you. I think I
might give it a name minus because as it was
an absolutely quality show, great action from top to bottom. Yes,
it would help if he would just if Tony would
just book these things. Cut either you know, either cut
a match or two or you know, knock about thirty
(02:52):
minutes off of it. You know it was because you
know Sunday night, it was you had the pre you
had the starting at was it six thirty pm Eastern?
I have thirty here in Texas? And it went what
five hours between the buy in and and the main show?
(03:14):
I mean that is just oh and then yeah, yeah,
if you're you're there, If you're there on site, you
go to the media scrum, that's another hour or so.
Oh man, I mean you're you're not getting now there
until you know, midnight twelve thirty. You know, it's and
it's just it's just weird. Let me ask you this.
(03:37):
So you had anarchy in there were you know, crazy
fantastic match and you had the finals of the Owen
Hart Foundation tournament on the men's side. Tony decided to
do the Owen Cup finals as the main event. Did
(03:57):
you agree with that?
Speaker 2 (04:00):
Excuse me? Absolutely, I did. I did. I think it
adds to the stakes of what the Owen Heart Tournament
means to AW and I think that's that's a really
key component to it all. And I think ultimately too,
you have these two stars that you're really trying to
build and make your the face of your franchise quote unquote.
(04:22):
I mean we've talked about this before. You lose somebody
like a Cody Road, you lose a name like CM
Punk and a Jade Cargill. The list can go on,
and it feels like a lot of big gut shots
for AW. So to position two of your guys that
you have that you know that one's been an original
and one has been very very proactive in saying positive
(04:45):
things about your company to the media like these past weeks,
and since he's joined, it's just like this, these are
the guys you want to ride with basically. So I
think there was several levels to making this the main
event that it really added to what they did. And
I thought these guys told a really really good story.
And yeah, and the finish itself with Hangman winning, it
(05:08):
was a surprise to a lot of people, myself included.
Speaker 1 (05:11):
Yeah, it was a surprise. I think most everybody figured
it was gonna be will Ospray. If you looked at
the betting onds like bet online, dot ag and others
they had, will Ospray was getting most of the money.
So I think it was expected will Ospray would would
be facing John Moxley in Arlington. But yeah, Hangman Adam
(05:32):
Page getting the victory, He's now going to go to
face Moxley at all Lean Texas. Was that the right call? So?
Speaker 2 (05:43):
I feel okay with it. I don't know if it
was necessarily the right call. I think the way you're
building somebody like Ospray, I think it's gonna get to
a point and it's I think this point is getting
close where Osprey should be your world champion and like
you know, or have that pursuit. And I think though
there is a great argument to be made for Hangman
(06:05):
Page considering he's an AW original. Moxley is a name
that is also very established the AW brand. Even though
I despise the whole death Rider's angle, but I do
think him going up against Moxley kind of completes a big,
big arc for Hangman Page. Now that's if he wins,
(06:26):
and he should win, like so, I and I think
to the aspect too. I think if you have a
feud here for this month and a half until all
In takes place, I think the dynamic between Hangman and
Moxley is a little bit more engaging of personalities and
styles than maybe you have Ospray. Not to take anything
(06:49):
away from Ospray and his persona he's conveying and certain
things like that. I just think Hangman's story kind of
lines up a little bit with what Moxley is trying
to do with this Death Writers thing, even though it stinks.
Speaker 1 (07:03):
Yeah, well let's see, and you and I are on
the same page as far as that this, this Moxley
title run has been has fallen way short of what
it could have been. The Death Writers are it's a
tired concept. It's it's been copy and paste since October YEP.
(07:24):
So are you of the belief like me that Hangman
Adam Page versus Moxley This needs to be the culmination.
This needs to be the nail in the coffin, so
to speak, for the Death Writers. Finally, Hangmanam Page saves
ae W from Moxley and his Death Writers.
Speaker 2 (07:46):
Do because you know, you had a lot of these
red hering certain ways and there were kind of obvious
red hearings about like, oh, is it going to be
Orange Cassie to stop the Death Writers? Is it going
to be Darby Allen to stop the Death Writers? Maybe
it's Swerve. And you know, I think the wild card
coming into all this is Hangman page so, and you know,
(08:07):
you want to look at like, Okay, if you're factoring
in the aw quote unquote universe of what they're doing.
The Death Riders are this evil, evil, chaotic faction that
has run rough shot over everybody in AW. Now it
hasn't been executed well whatsoever. And you know that's another
(08:27):
story outside of what they're telling. But I do think
Hangman has had this moral conflict where he has been
a bad guy and he's done some heinous stuff and
you know, and and he's had this travel and now
he's seeing himself from a different perspective, you know, of
Oh Man, I am thankful that the fans will love
me even though I've done horrible things and I've gotten
(08:49):
past Swerve and all this stuff. So I think, yes,
I think that needs to happen if they don't have
Hangman win this and they somehow, for some reason one
Mark's to retain because they want to have Darby Allen
do it or somebody else instead. It's an awful, terrible mistake,
and uh, it's really gonna damage the company, I think.
Speaker 1 (09:10):
Yeah, I could agree more. They this cannot go past
July twelfth. If it does, I got a feeling people
are gonna start tuning out in droves because it's gonna
be Oh God, we gotta we got to live through
this some more. Really, And you're right, Look, Darby Allen,
(09:31):
you know he's still got He's still trying to come
down off Mount Everest, right, yeah, you know so, and
you know, and and we all hope he makes it
down successfully and everything and healthy. Even after that, it's
gonna take him time to get back into wrestling shape
because again, the pursuit to climb all the way up
(09:54):
Mount Everest and then climb back down your body, it's
gonna take a toll on your body because of the thin, thin,
the lack of oxygen, you know, just the the wear
and tear of your body going up and down that mountain.
So it's gonna take him a while. Look, I'm not
looking for him to be at all in I'm not
sure he's gonna be ring ready for all in and
(10:16):
that's fine by me. He needs to take as much
time as he can to get back into ringing shape
and then bring him back all out in Toronto. I
don't know, maybe, but but I'm with you. Mercedes mone
wins the Women's Tournament, defeating Jamie Hayter. I think that
(10:37):
was the That was one that was pretty much expected.
It's gonna be Mercedes Mone versus timeless Tony Storm for
the aw Women's World Championship. Let me ask you, A, uh,
the is Mercedes mone more interesting now that she has
dropped the new Japan Strong title. B Do you see
(11:00):
her winning the women's World title in Arlington?
Speaker 2 (11:05):
For the answer to A, yes, I do. I think
you just you kind of need a little bit of
from a character perspective, firelit under her a little bit,
so I think that that's a fair way to kind
of do it. And then B, I think she needs
to win the title. I think it's a I think
it's you can continue a feud with Tony Storm. But
(11:26):
I do think Mercedes needs to win because it's been
like well over a year since she's been a part
of the company. She's had the TBS title run and
stuff like that, which is fine, but it's also it's
still not the Women's World Championship, and she is like,
for you know, what you're paying her and how she's
(11:47):
been positioned in the past, and we she's a big
name star and you have to make the most of that.
And it's just so it does make you give you
pause a little bit when you think about will Ospry
and what they're doing with him or in Akata to
be a better example of that. All is like, hey,
let's let's get these stars in the limelight here. And
so I think she needs to be in the title picture,
(12:08):
the Women's World title picture, and I do think she
needs to ultimately win, because it's just she's the star.
You want that title round her waist at one point
or another, and you could have a really, really fun
and great feud with Tony Storm after all. In as well,
I think.
Speaker 1 (12:23):
True and Tony Strum could win the title back because
I think she had her as a world champion has
been the one of the big attractions to ae W
in the last few months. It's just it's one of
those that just everybody's gravitated to. So I get that Uh,
(12:43):
you Mentionedata. He successfully defended the Continental Championship against Speedball
Mike Bailey. If you believe the room innuendo, the talk
around the campfire, it's that, you know, Tony Kahan's gonna
merge the Continental International Chamchampionships, so we might get Okata
versus Omega at all in give me your thoughts on
(13:09):
the possibility of seeing one of the all time classics
from New Japan Pro Wrestling play out in front of
us they're at Global Life Field.
Speaker 2 (13:20):
Yeah, I think this one's been dogged for quite a
while as to you know, fans wanting to see it
and seeing it on a mainstream American wrestling product too.
So you know what Okata got here? I mean, that's
that's the thought processes. Oh man, can't wait to see
him go up against somebody like an Omega like and
continue that rivalry and stuff like that. So putting it
(13:43):
in front of the globe life there and stuff like that,
making it feel like the big deal that it is
is the right thing to do. And I think ultimately too,
excuse me, merging those titles together is the right thing
to do because so many titles, excuse me, so many belts,
everything like that. You need to just get re aligned,
(14:04):
relign what you're doing here, and tighten things up in
certain ways. And I think make those belts and titles
mean a little bit more, whether whatever you call it is,
whatever you would decide, But ultimately both those titles I
ultimately don't feel are very necessary in AW so you
ultimately want those guys too in the world title picture.
Speaker 1 (14:23):
Yeah. The other thing with Okada is, look, it's cute
that you know he joined he joined up with the
young Bucks, with the Elite, and you know he's been
doing this heel run since he got to a w GET.
(14:43):
I would say that especially in the last four or
five months. The Okada we see now is it's almost
I don't know, it's maybe it's just a personal thing.
I think it is is a disrespect to the greatness
(15:04):
of Kazuko Okada multiple time from my IWGP heavyweight champion,
one of the icons in New Japan, and I think
it's time for him. He may and he may be
having fun with it, but I think it's time to
let that go and let's get the old Okada back,
(15:26):
the one that you know, dominated New Japan for so long,
the one that we have seen could become one of
the greatest wrestlers of all time and we need to
get back he needs to get back to that. Am
I far off? Or should I just let just let
Okada have fun and you know say bitch four thousand times?
Speaker 2 (15:50):
Yeah? No, Still, I'm one hundred percent with you. I
think they need I mean, like it's a it was
a missed op to you to kind of kind of
not make him like a lone wolf in certain ways,
I think because like and make his you know, first
impressions are can be everything here and you know, for
a lot of American wrestling fans that could have been
their first impression of Bocada is coming into debut and
(16:11):
nay w And I know he's been at for been
door and stuff like that, but you sign him and
stuff like that, you want to position him in a
certain way, but no, it's been he's been playing. He's
been closer to uh on Our Truth than he's been
to a CM punk, And you know, you want him
to be more of a CM punk than anything else.
You know, I think some of the stuff he does
is good and clever and funny, but it's also ultimately
(16:34):
you're not maximizing your your opportunities him. You're not getting
your return on investment with with somebody like an Okata,
and it's it really is a shame. And I I
think saying it as a disrespect I think is a
fair fair way to put it. For sure, absolutely it is.
Speaker 1 (16:48):
You know, like I said, it just I get and
like I said, it could be like knock him over, nww,
He's just having fun, you know, this is the tail
end of his career and he just wants to have fun.
I get it. But same time, it's I think by
him doing this, people are forgetting how great he really is,
(17:14):
and I think it's a disservice to wrestling fans all over.
Speaker 2 (17:17):
I'll be honest too, I'm not like, as you know,
I've seen his new Japan work and stuff like that,
but I'm not like invested in, like embedded and know
all the ins and outs of his career and his
wrestling style and everything. Like I was fortunate enough to
see him like ten years ago when Roh did the
thing in the in Philly, Well that was two thousand
and fifteen years ago, Holy smokes. But like, so, like
(17:41):
what I'm seeing of Okata is really what is sticking
with me right now, and I can imagine what that's
like for fans that are very unaware of who he is,
you know, because it's just like, this is what we're
getting with him, when there's a whole lot more to
this guy and what he's done for the wrestling business.
Speaker 1 (17:56):
Yeah, you're absolutely right. Anything else from from though or
nothing stick out in your mind. You know, no other
titles changed hands. You had FTR defeating University of Nigel McGinnis,
Guinness making a showing of it, you know, showing out
why why he was so great back in his day.
(18:16):
The Heart Syndicate defending the AAW World Tag team titles
against the Sons of Texas, Dustin Road, Sammy Guvara two,
very good friend of mine. Anything else from double or
nothing stick out in your mind.
Speaker 2 (18:30):
I'll just say. I like, you know, so I didn't
watch it live. I watched it after the fact, and
so I'm getting some of my friend's commentary of what
they're thinking about the pay per view and stuff like that,
and uh, you know there my one buddy was watching
it live, the man archy and arena match and like
(18:51):
saying all this different things that are happening. Oh, they
just chained Willow night Gill's ear to the turnbuckle post,
or you know, Kenny Omega just stayed a bunch of
thumb tag and uh, you know, we got his tongue
staples and I'm like, oh god, really is this what
thing's going on? And all that stuff, And then when
I watched it, I'm like, all right, yeah, that stuff's
not my bag necessarily. But that match was a lot
(19:12):
of fun.
Speaker 1 (19:14):
It was, and I and that's true. And that was
the one thing I didn't even mention about. Anarchy. We
talked about briefly, but that antarchy and arena match. First
of all, having the music, which it was so funny,
you know, to go from the you know, the pipes
and drums too. I'm so excited from the pointer's distance.
And then Kenny Meghan Finan says, let's get some two
(19:35):
thousands alter alternate rock and we get Bodies from Drowning
Pool and that played for most matches, which I think
that that added to the match so much. Really, like
you said, yeah, like you said, the staples and the
thumb tacks, chaining you know, will and Nightingale's ear to
the ring post and and everything. You know, five you
(19:56):
know we did. We did get the good guys winning
with you know, Kenny Omega, swear Strickland, Will of Nightingale
in the ops.
Speaker 2 (20:06):
Yep.
Speaker 1 (20:07):
But yeah, it was. It was a fun. It was
a fun match to just sit back and just take
in the carnage.
Speaker 2 (20:16):
And I think that can be like a big tent
pool kind of match for a W and it has
been obviously it certainly. But I think them embracing Okay,
let's play the music throughout this. Let's get creative and
make this fun for the crowd and make this like
an experience. I think it is one of their big
takeaway matches that they can really embrace. I think, like
(20:36):
something like a Blood and Guts. I think they should
kind of maybe almost do away with blood and Guts
after this fact. I think anarchy and Arena should be
your bag kind of match that Okay, this is this
is something that fans can really get invested into. Same
with the owen Hart Cup. I think that's great to
have because it's almost it's not the it's not a
Royal rumble, but it's like it has the stakes of
a roil rumble. I think that's what and that main
(20:57):
eventing it at this show, I thought added to that.
Speaker 1 (21:00):
Well, oh yeah, the Owen Hart, you know, I compare
it and the you know in Continental the Continental Classic.
You know, I always say contin Own Class is kind
of like their version of the g One you know,
g One Climax. Uh. This is you know, kind of
a you know, kind of in a similar vein. And
(21:23):
you're right, the anarchy in the arena is such a
such an ae W match, And yes, have it once
you maybe do it every year at you know, make
that just a regular double or nothing match. It, you know,
every year is going to be anarchy the arena, the
blood and guts. Yeah, I'm kind of with you because
(21:45):
it's too close to war games. Uh. And you know, look,
we've seen a t try to nudge itself a little
towards sports entertainment, you know, with the you know, beginning
to show promos and stuff. So I would say, yeah,
let anarchy and the arena be that match. Do once
(22:05):
a year to blow off a feud or something like that.
And I agree.
Speaker 2 (22:10):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (22:11):
They announced during the show during the show fight or
Fest coming up on June fourth. It will be a
four hour live broadcast with Dynamite in Collision on the
same night. Uh, they're doing a They're gonna do it
a international title tournament. Kenny Omega will defend against three
other individuals qualifying matches. I think they're happening tonight on Dynamite.
(22:36):
In fact, I saw I think it was Brodie.
Speaker 2 (22:38):
King and Josh Alexander.
Speaker 1 (22:40):
Yes, Josh Alexander. I think that's one of them. Get
four out and we were just talking about pay per
views and now you're gonna do your Wednesday night broadcast.
You're gonna do four hours. Look, it seems a little ambitious.
Speaker 2 (23:00):
Right, And I understand the aspect they got to dance
around the NBA playoffs and stuff like that, but yeah,
it's a lot of wrestling, and already, you know, you're
thinking about like, Okay, w already puts out a lot
of wrestling every week too at the same time. So
it's just like to do this all in one sitting.
And then for the aspect too, it's kind of hearkening
(23:21):
back to what we were talking about previously too, with
this international title and that being something where Kenny all right, yeah,
Kenny's there. Why are you having this in between him
potentially going up against Okada. I think that you'd want
to get that match cemented and not dance around it still,
and it's just it feels pointless, like it feels like
(23:43):
I do the other show Rumbor in Innuendo it is called
with Robert Carpolis, and the aspect is I hate I
hate eliminator matches. I hate them. I hate any time
they get announced or anything like that. I'm just like, no,
just give me. I don't care call number one Denner
match or whatever. But I don't and I don't want this. No,
(24:03):
it's just I think it's so kind of productive and
this just doesn't fit right. I get you gotta fill
some time, but there's different ways you.
Speaker 1 (24:10):
Can do that. There is, there is. I mean, you know,
both rosters have enough talent you can you can fill time.
And the.
Speaker 2 (24:21):
Tournaments all over the place. Like That's what I liked
about the owen Hard Cup is that was the tournament
you had I think initially, like I think you had
a couple other ones, but like this one was the tournament.
And now you have what you mentioned, the Continental Classic.
Then you have tournaments coming here, tournament over here. It's
just like, no, let's keep it one tournament here, Make
(24:41):
that one feel special. Don't worry about it.
Speaker 1 (24:44):
I get it. I get it. When Dom and I
come back from this break, we'll talk some WWE. That's
next on Sports Guys Talking Wrestling. Wrestling has more than
one royal family. This is the American Nightmare. Cody Roads,
(25:10):
and you are listening to Sports Guys Talking Wrestling. Back
here on Sports Guys Talking Wrestling, student Myrack, Dominic D'Angelo
joining me. Let's switch gears talk about WW before we
get to Saturday Nights my event. They made the announcement
that Wrestlming in forty two is no longer going to
(25:32):
be in New Orleans. They're moved there. The the reports
are saying I don't think they've made official yet, but
most reports are saying it's actually going to go back
to Las Vegas, back to Allegiant Stadium, the home of
the Braiders. And in fact, there are several reports that
are saying WW wants to make WrestleMania in Vegas a
(25:53):
regular happening, so they would do it not every year,
but could be every other year. Give me your thoughts
on the possibility that we could see WrestleMania in Las
Vegas as on a regular basis.
Speaker 2 (26:11):
I think it's a good move on their part. I like,
obviously them pulling the rug out from under New Orleans
is really like unprecedented in certain ways when it comes
to WrestleMania. They announced WrestleMania, and that's where it's gonna be. Typically,
you know, the Rock even announced it was New Orleans,
so it's just like, all right, that's where it's gonna happen.
So then the guy would be like that. But we'll
(26:34):
take it back from a business aspect and even from
an entertainment and sports aspect, I completely do understand it,
and it does make sense. I mean, like, look at
who they're sistered up with in the UFC. It's like
fits happened in Vegas, and you know you still have
that are of boxing taking place in Vegas and that
(26:56):
that identity going there. So why wouldn't we you want
to be a part of that ecosystem where hey, you
want to tune into WrestleMania, Well guess what, you got
to go to Las Vegas. And the other aspect too,
that is this happened, Uh, wrestle may happened over Easter weekend.
Easter weekends a downtime for Vegas. You know, it's a holiday.
(27:17):
So it's like, you want to get people out and
about on an Easter weekend, why not put wrestle Mania
there on the regular And so I think there's that
that's a certain argument. Now I Stu, I don't know.
Were you in New Orleans for that WrestleMania that they
had last time there?
Speaker 1 (27:33):
It was thirty Yeah, thirty four yesty four, Yes, thirty four.
I was in New Orleans.
Speaker 2 (27:41):
As a fan. I was, so I didn't I wasn't
a dirt scheet writer at that point in time, so
I just went as a and it was the best
WrestleMania I've ever been to, not the match, not the event,
the whole like being there, the experience.
Speaker 1 (27:55):
Look. New Orleans is one of my favorite cities. It
was that I cover. My first Super Bowl I covered
was Super Bowl forty seven in New Orleans, Niners Ravens,
the Hardball Bowl. I've always enjoyed Orleans. Vegas. I can
do about three days and then I'm I'm done.
Speaker 2 (28:16):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (28:17):
The other thing was I was going to ask you
about you know, a lot a lot of criticism was
made this past April about prices in Vegas, from flights
to tickets, to hotels. There's there was a lot of
criticism about how fans were being priced out of going
(28:40):
to WrestleMania. Now WW reportedly is looking at making Las
Vegas a regular stop. Do you have a I mean,
is that could that be a danger? Especially if you
do it during Easter we cand cause like I, you know,
(29:02):
I look just to see what it would take for
me to fly from Austin to Las Vegas, and flights
were at least a good two hundred bucks more than
any of the time of the year.
Speaker 2 (29:16):
Yeah, I believe it. Well two yeah, I STU know,
I'm I completely agree with that thought process too, because
and that's been a thing that's been in the back
of my mind, is like, yeah, these ticket prices are
just insane now for we like all the events that
they're doing money in the bank, and you know, you
name it, like some of their like quote unquote b
(29:36):
poes are a little bit or expensive too. They want
to make any experience and I get that. And then
but at the same time, too, you're you're pulling away
your live events, like you're not having as many anymore,
and so it gives fans a less opportunity to go
see the stars in person and feel a part of
that WE fandom that they that some of the adults
(29:56):
my age or your age grew up watching. And and
now you can't really instill that and bring that to
your children or the kids that you bring at the
same time. And like so you're going to price out
a lot of your fan base and in turn hurt
the goodwill that you know, fans have with pro wrestling
in general, Like we has not always done its best
(30:19):
job at kind of keeping everybody in consideration. But at
the same time too, it's still always has kind of
been the family wrestling show you watch. So I think
that is a huge issue that they need to be
very cautious of. I think they're getting a little too
big for their bridges, as JR.
Speaker 1 (30:39):
Might put it. You know what's funny is the NFL
flirted with the idea of doing the Super Bowl just
in a certain like two or three certain cities warm
weather climates. So like I was at Super Bowl fifty
two in Minneapolis, which, look it was. You know, it's
Minneapolis in February, so it's going to be bitter cold,
(31:03):
snow all over the place and all that good stuff.
Look it was, it was a disaster when when it
was in Ireland, the last time it was in Arlington,
the only time it's been in Arlington, it was a
disaster because they it just happened to be a weekend
where the Metroplex got a big ice storm. People were
iceed in, people couldn't get around. Not to mention, it's
(31:24):
so spread out being you know, being in the Metroplex.
You had Vent in Arlington, had Vince in Dallas, had
Vince in Fort Worth, so everything spread out, And so yeah,
I I I understand the possibility of maybe, you know,
it's financially might be a little more beneficial, But at
the same time, there's something about having it in different
(31:47):
locations and being able to be able to enjoy those locations.
I get it. Satay Knight's been event Uh. We had
the seth Rollins, Brown Breaker beaten and see him punk.
At same he's aying, Bronson Reid returns and now he's
part of that conglomerate with Rollins and Breaker and Paul Hayman.
(32:10):
Ah did Rollins and do Rollins and Bron need Bronson
Reid in their little group?
Speaker 2 (32:19):
That's a great question, Stu. I don't think they need him.
I think they can make him a fun factor though,
you know, because I mean honestly, Breaker fills the role
that Bronson's doing, you know too at the same time,
So it's like, how are you going to make them
kind of coexist with one another? And it made me
think even more from a bigger perspective too, is like
(32:41):
you got a lot of these Brewiser big destroyers too
also on SmackDown, and a Jacob Fato and now with
J C. Matteo AKJF.
Speaker 1 (32:49):
Cobb.
Speaker 2 (32:49):
So it's like you have several names that are kind
of playing this role here for wweh what is that
going to do for the ultimate ones that you want
to really really build into stars When that's a bron
Breaker or a Jacob Fato, it's like, you know, you
have these other cooks in the kitchen as well. So uh,
but I do ultimately I think he'll be a fun
(33:10):
aspect to it all. I don't think they necessarily need him,
but it definitely begs the question too, like it just
feels like a layup to put Becky Lynch in there
too at some point or another.
Speaker 1 (33:22):
You know, it does, doesn't it with you know? With
Arry I guess she you know this heel run that
she's been on. I get maybe there's a hesitancy to
pire up seth Rawlins and Becky Lynch, you know, husband
wife that type of thing. But at the same time,
there there feels like just a natural fit, you know,
(33:44):
looking beyond the whole husband wife thing.
Speaker 2 (33:47):
So absolutely and you know what's Doe too, It's like
you give that added element into seth Rawlins faction. I
think that changes the whole dynamic of seth Rawlins. I
think seth Rawlins is still so somewhat of a lost
soul in how to convey himself on television. Now pairing
him with him and certainly helps, and I think it,
you know, kind of adds to who he might be
(34:09):
in a little bit of his aura. But if you
pair him up with his wife, who's an actual wrestler
too at the same time, and one of the best
women's wrestlers we've ever encountered, Like from a persona and
a star power standpoint, like you're getting like an elevated
like Miss Elizabeth in this equasy. Yeah, and that's something
(34:29):
that we have not seen in quite a while, is
and this is something unique that would build seth up
in his own way. So I think to put Becky
with her him, it really might help him out discover
who he is as a persona too. If he has
his wife somebody that they're close to, like, you know,
from a relationship standpoint, could really help him as a
(34:50):
character on air too.
Speaker 1 (34:51):
I think, yeah, I think you're right. John Cena defeating
Our Truth non title match. We saw the hesitation for
a moment with John Cena. I've seen many people talking about, Okay,
you gotta have John Cena turn baby face sometime, and
(35:12):
I agree, You're not gonna have John Cena be a
heel through this entire retirement tour and have him go
out as a heel just doesn't work that way. Look
at Tanahashi in New Japan. I mean he's doing it
the right way. So if you're gonna turn John Cena babyface,
when do you do it?
Speaker 2 (35:35):
I think you give it. I think you give it
a couple months, just a couple months at the end
of his run. I think that's it. I don't think.
I think you don't want to make this move seem
very short term. I think if you were to do
if you were to make it short term, I think
you should have ended it right after like WrestleMania, and
(35:57):
that would have been like Cody Roads winning ultimately beating
scene and then seeing him be like, what the hell
was was I doing?
Speaker 1 (36:03):
Kind of thing.
Speaker 2 (36:03):
I think if you were to you peel the beata
off really quick. But now that you're in it, ride
it out for the majority of this final farewell tour,
but nearing the end of the next last couple of months,
have seen it come to his senses be like, dang,
I've been in shirt this whole time, and I do
want to go out on the right note, and I
do appreciate you fans, and you know what, Cody, I'm
(36:24):
getting a shot whoever it may be, But Cody is
the example, I think. And then like whoever that unseats
him and boomy off into the sunset he goes. And
so I think, just maybe a couple of months, but
now that you're in the thick of this heel run,
I don't think you turn him until it really really
means something near the end of it.
Speaker 1 (36:43):
The scenario I've had, in the kind of my fantasy
scenario would be, you know, and Cody's come back. He
came back Saturday night to you know, help Jay USSO
defeat Logan Paul, and now it's going to be Cody
and Jay tak him on Logan Paul in John Sena
at Money in the Bank. My my fantasy CIN scenario
(37:04):
would be it ends up being Sena defending the title
against Cody at I don't know, Night of Champions, maybe
in Saudi Arabia. Okay, that's when The Rock finally makes
his appearance like he should have at WrestleMania. We won't
get into that. The Rock finally makes an appearance, goes
(37:27):
ringside with Sena, match happens, Cody gets the pen, Cody
wins the title, celebrates Yay John Cena. He's angry. Rock
comes in the ring, you know, acts like he's going
to console John Cena and then hit some of the
rock bottom and that's where Sena starts his Redemption tour
(37:52):
and we end up with Seena Rock. I don't know,
Survivors series. Maybe that would be my thought, you know,
I think it could be fun.
Speaker 2 (38:02):
I think though, to make his face turn back to
the face turn more significant. I wouldn't want the Rock
to be the perpetuator of it where he's the one. Hey, okay,
seen a lost I'm here to come for you. I'm
here to help you. I'd want seen it almost come
to his ways and be like, yeah, wait a second, Rocket,
f you, you know what I mean, and like him
catch on before the Rock first.
Speaker 1 (38:23):
And that's that's another thing I'm you know, I just
think the Rock should be involved somewhere. Since he was
the one that was involved in seeing a turning, heel
have him involved in in turning baby face.
Speaker 2 (38:35):
That makes sense too, though.
Speaker 1 (38:36):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (38:37):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (38:37):
Damian Priest beat Drew Magatyre in the cage, had a concerto.
Reports are Drew Magnetize is gonna take some time off,
which he needs, you know, he solely deserves. He's been
going at it forever. So Lena Vega beating Chelsea Green
to retain the women's US title. All in all, it
was an easy two hour I think watch yeah, yeah,
(38:59):
so oh hey, And it was a great, great opportunity
to have primetime wrestling on a Saturday night on a
major network like NBC. Anything taken away from Saturday night's
main event, well, Stu.
Speaker 2 (39:12):
I think I it might have been just social media contingency,
and we all know that's not the majority of the
masses here when it comes to that. But like the
I got what I saw from feedback is like, oh,
this Saturday It's main event, was like blah, they didn't
really do anything. It's kind of boring. And I'm like, no,
they told stories on that thing, and they got the
(39:34):
point across to what they wanted to get across, and
they highlighted their stars that they wanted and you know,
they made it feel special and it was short and sweet.
That's the nice thing about it. It was just like, all right, man, hey,
wrestling on a Saturday night. This feels special. I love
the red, white and blue ropes Jesse in the mix,
and they were given. They were given that whole him
calling the finish of the cage match really a hard
(39:56):
time online too, And I'm like, dude, he's a heel
number one. He your ultimately he'll commentator. And the fact
is is you think about it, Bruno walked out of
the cage all the time. That is the point of
a cage match is to walk out of the steel cage.
Speaker 1 (40:10):
Look, Jesse is the body of ventur, you know, God
bless him. Yeah, is commentary, It's one of those things
he's always been. He'll he'll find something to rail on.
I'm surprised he did. I'm surprised he didn't rail on
the referees as much as he did. You know, he
that was used to be his calling card. He would
give the referees all sorts of hell, you know, slow
(40:32):
count whatever, inconsistent count. So I you know, and it's
kind of saying, Okay, Jesse's being Jesse. It's heartening back
to you know, when he was with Gorilla Mons Soon
I get it. It's he was playing the part.
Speaker 2 (40:44):
So yeah, and it's like I think too, having somebody
that's kind of a wild card in the mix once
in a while. Yeah, maybe he might say some stuff
that's counterproductive in certain ways, but ultimately two, it is
refreshing to see in here because you're like, oh man,
Jesse said, then okay, you know whatever. But yeah, I overall,
I thought it was a good show and I really
(41:06):
enjoyed it. I enjoyed it a lot.
Speaker 1 (41:08):
I did too. Ww announcing a takeover of Atlanta with
NXT's Great American Bash Satyn. It'sment event and evolution. So
we're bringing back the Women's Event YEP on July twelfth
and thirteenth, and in fact, NXT's Great American Bash. He
is going to run head to head with aew All
(41:31):
in Texas.
Speaker 2 (41:33):
Oh that's a shocker.
Speaker 1 (41:34):
Shocker is okay? WWE counter program is this purposely counter
programming against ae W was this?
Speaker 2 (41:46):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (41:47):
We you know, we're just doing our thing. And I
mean it's kind of like, really are you going to
I mean, I get it, it's NXT going up against
probably a marquee match with Hangman Page of Moxley, I
you know, so, but still ww kind of counterprogramming against
(42:10):
aew to A to a certain extent, give me your thoughts.
Speaker 2 (42:15):
Yeah, it's a little bit of dirty pool, I think,
I think. But that's the pro wrestling business too. Its inherentce,
you know, I think there is. I think Triple H
and W kind of do want to flex and be like, look,
we'll put an NXT up against your big headline pay
per view and we're probably going to get a good
amount of viewers watching that because it's more accessible for
(42:38):
people to watch in comparison to them paying up sixty
or fifty hollards for a pay per view or whatever
it may be. And so it's just like, yeah, I
kind of I don't necessarily hate on it that much.
I understand it. But at the same time too, It's
like I thought Tony Kahn's comments during the media scrum
when he was asked about it, I.
Speaker 1 (42:59):
Thought, was good.
Speaker 2 (43:00):
You know, hey, you know, yeah, I remember Jim Crockett's
promotion doing that and he's like, but we're not going
to end up like them.
Speaker 1 (43:06):
Yeah, that was And you're right, you know they did.
They do Survivor series right up against Dark back in
the day. So which and by the way, was Mark
Coke a good friend of mine and I I co
host his show on Sundays. He was the one that
asked Tony about about the counter programming. So credit Mark
Hoke Mark Oke Show on Odyssey and Kate on FM
(43:28):
all this. But yeah, it's look, I get it, it's competition. Yes,
it's a little bit dirty pool. I do wonder ann
XT you know, putting your putting your third brand up
against you know the biggest, you know, aw's biggest event
(43:50):
in you know, all year long. I get that. So
all right, whatever, that's fine. Here's a here's an things.
So you got They've got this World's Kalaide event coming
up on the June seventh, WW and Triple A. They've
(44:11):
announced two matches so far. First, we're they announced Logato
del Fantasma, So Santos, Escobar, Berto and Angel take it
on l Hild, Doctor Wagner, Junior, Psycho Clown and Pigano.
Great trios match should be a lot of fun, especially
with the you know, look Luchi Labray trios. That should
(44:34):
be fantastic. Here's the other one. This one's interesting. Yes,
L Hill w Kingo. Kingo we've seen you know, we've
seen him in aw Everything, one of the greatest. Taken
on Chad Gable Monday night on Raw. They flashed the
graphic and it says for the Triple A make a Championship.
Now here's the here's the problem. As of right now,
(44:58):
that title is being held by the man who used
to work in ww as Alberto Del Rio, right, Alberto L. Patron.
So is it just me or did they just telegraph
that the Kingo's gonna win that title? I think in fact,
they've got a title match m Kingo and L Patron?
(45:21):
Is it this weekend Triple May one of the Triple
Mania events.
Speaker 2 (45:27):
I'm not sure when it exactly happens, but yeah, I
know it's on the docket too.
Speaker 1 (45:32):
Yeah, so did they just telegraph oh, Vi Kingo's gonna
win the title? You know, he's gonna beat l Patron
for the title?
Speaker 2 (45:40):
I think so. I mean, you know that there was
a big hubbub about him, like, hey, is del Rio
under contract now with we? Is he part of the company?
What's going on? And he's the champion? And they're getting
a lot of negative feedback from that too at the
same time, and so maybe they're just trying to get
out ahead of it and be like, yeah, yeah, Viking
Goo is gonna defend the championship here. It just doesn't
(46:03):
seem I don't know. I why not wait until that
match happens and then then announce that you have some
time still to build it? But I guess not too
if you're if it's June seventh, that's like what like
a little under two weeks.
Speaker 1 (46:16):
Or something, Yeah, about a week and a half now, So.
Speaker 2 (46:19):
Like if you don't have too much time to do it.
So maybe they just were like, yeah, let's just advertise it,
get out of the way that it's a dog whistle
to people to be like, hey, we're not keeping del
Rio around potentially, I guess yeah, you know maybe, So yeah,
I think that it was probably intentional.
Speaker 1 (46:34):
I don't.
Speaker 2 (46:34):
I definitely don't think it was an oversight.
Speaker 1 (46:36):
Well, and and from you know the reports I've read, yes,
WW did redo the contracts for the Lutradors and Triple A,
but it was for the purpose of now that WW
owns Triple A, they wanted in WWE contracts, which are
framed a little bit differently than the Triple A contract.
(46:58):
So yeah, and since yes, Alberto del rio Is contract
has a WW contract, but I think it was just
for that. It's not like he's going to be wrestling
on Raw next week.
Speaker 2 (47:11):
Right.
Speaker 1 (47:13):
Let's see a couple of things we've had Julia, which
that was a kind of a shocker, and l A.
Knight qualified for money in the Bank on SmackDown last Friday,
and then Panta and Seth Rawlins qualified on Raw on
Monday night. If if you had to pick who wins
(47:37):
who wins the money in bank briefcase on the men's
and women's side.
Speaker 2 (47:42):
Oh, that's tough. So let's see, I do. I guess
it's not that tough than I think about it. I
think how Seth's that set it up for himself on
Raw I think Seth has to be the heavy favorite
because I think there's a lot of fun story elements
you can kind of have with Seth the one wheelding
that briefcase, like and you're having him potentially tease, you
(48:04):
know him obviously with Jay or with Sina whoever holds
a bell. So I think and like he was talking
about that being power and having power, and I think,
you know, if he can't necessarily have one of the
titles at this moment in time, having a briefcase, is
that form of power that he controls any moment, anytime
sort of aspect of it all. So I would go
with Seth, I think if that was for the men's side.
(48:26):
As far as the women's go, I think in the
same turn, Ria is such a star that I do
think you need something for her to have, and you know,
and if she's pursuing in a babyface role as one
of your top stars, it would benefit her too, I
think to maybe have the briefcase and have something like
that fun and so you got two top named stars
(48:46):
to kind of hold those titles together. But I mean,
I'm certainly not against the aspect of them, like having
a rock Samperez Win and like kind of shocking a
little bit of people as far as anything when anything
besides the men like Seth may be happening with the mensa,
I'm not sure who I would who else I wouldn't
necessarily bestow it upon. You could tell some good stories
(49:08):
in a lot of different ways. So but I think
how they set the table for Seth makes the most
sense of maybe the direction they're going.
Speaker 1 (49:14):
I agree with you on the Seth thing, Like you said,
the way they set it up on Monday Night, the promo,
you know, wants all the power. I'll get that. So
that wouldn't make sense on the women's side all right.
While Riea with the briefcase would be interesting. I think
Roxane Perez would be interesting as well. I think Julia
would be interesting as well. I think it's probably a
(49:37):
little more wide open on the women's side than it
is on the men's side. And I I mean it
may not. Maybe it's not Seth, maybe it's somebody else,
you know, maybe they have a different plan in place
for Seth. I think Seth does end up with that
World Championship around his way something time this year, and
(50:02):
I think it could be via the money in the
bank briefcase. So I think you may be right. So
he is Dominic D'Angel dom tell everybody how you know
what the podcast you you run and how they can
find you. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (50:17):
Sure, So I'm no longer it's no longer one true sport.
We have merged with brass Aring Media. So me and
Zach Haydorn we do a YouTube channel now together and
we do live content that goes on there, and I
do a daily hotline. I do fifteen minute ten to
fifteen minute daily hotline. Usually all I do is really
cover one topic and talk about it. It's not people
(50:38):
don't call in. I don't have I haven't had any
scoops yet, but maybe at some point I will. But
and it's uh, you don't got to pay like me,
Gene or nothing like that. So but I do lean
into the nine hundred number. I do lean into that
a little bit. So check that out. Just type in
Brasslering Media Wrestling and that should pop up on YouTube.
I do RVDTV one of a kind with RVD podcast,
(51:00):
Rob and I. We've been having ECW guests left and right.
We had Taz on, We've had Tommy Dreamer on we've
had kid cash more to plan too, I think when
it comes to paying tribute to Saboo and everything. So
it's been a lot of fun and uh, you know,
bittersweet to talk about Saboo in a lot of good
ways and stuff like that. So rvdtv dot com and
(51:21):
check out if you do want to check out Magnetier
Greg Gunya. We all that'll be on the Brass Ring
Media Channel, those episodes and stuff like that, so be
sure to check that out. And then I do a
show with Fonzi too on rvd TV too, so Sam
Man was another one we had on too, So it's
been great stuff. So yeah, stud, just staying busy, but
I got time for you, and it's always nice to
chat it up with you.
Speaker 1 (51:41):
Brother, and I appreciate I got to meet Bill Alfonso
in Las Vegas last year. Great guy. We had a
nice little chat, so Dominic D'Angelo, I appreciate it. Man
as always all the best to you. Let me know
if you come back to Texas, will hit some barbecue.
Otherwise I'll talk to you soon.
Speaker 2 (52:00):
You brother, Thank you so much.
Speaker 1 (52:02):
Always enjoy cutting it up with Dominic DiAngelo and of
course catch him now. Brass Ring Media, so correction on
that Brass Ring Media, all the podcasts he does such
a fantastic job. When I come back from this break,
I'll let you know what's happening in Texas independent wrestling,
plus some good news about an icon coming up next
(52:24):
on Sports Guys Talking Wrestling. Say his name, man, he appears.
I believe in Joe Hendry. I believe in Joe Hendry.
Speaker 2 (52:39):
Because you loved and Pavers and Tokyo.
Speaker 1 (52:44):
Say his name and he appears.
Speaker 2 (52:46):
This is Joe Hendry here at his time for you
to listen to Sports Guys Talking Wrestling. I believe in
Joe Hendry.
Speaker 1 (53:05):
Back here on Sports Guys Talking Wrestlings through my Rik
here while doing this episode, I've got aw Dynamite onto
television and congratulations Brody King defeating Josh Alexander bloody him.
Uh So, Brody King will be in that international title
(53:26):
four way coming up on June seventh, excuse me, June fourth.
Next week, they just showed the graphic, uh the four
hour special event as they're calling it. Uh So, Brody
King will be one of the people that will challenge
Kenny Omega for that International Championship they're just now advertising
(53:48):
on Collision, Cliocestagnolian Commander will fight for a spot and
that in that match, as will Mascara Dorada and from CMLL.
That will also be Saturday night on Collision. So and
the winners of those two matches will join Brodie King
(54:11):
to challenge Kenny Omega next week for that AEW International Championship.
Oh and we also got Paragon and Tomoa Ishi taking
on Knuski Takeshta and Rapongi. Wece Recky Reky Romeo Trent Barretta.
So there we go. That'll be an interesting on Collision.
(54:38):
Just a couple of cards tell you about this weekend
in independent wrestling. We'll start with Metroplex Wrestling presenting We
All Go a Little Mad Saturday at the NPX Arena
in bed for bell time a pm Central. Brick Savage
will be there, Matthew Palmer, me Yamasta would be there,
My World and more. That's Metroplex Wrestling this Saturday in Bedford,
(55:02):
and New Texas Pro Wrestling presents Bats City Sunday at
the Empire Controlling Garage on East seventh Street in downtown
Austin belltime six pm Central. Carter Black will be there.
Stephen Wolf Hit and Wayne and Wyatt Roads, the Texas
out Laws will be there. That's New Texas Pro Wrestling
this Sunday in downtown Austin, and that's a look at
(55:26):
independent wrestling around the great State of Texas. Wherever you
may be, go out and support independent wrestling. A couple
of the notes before I get out of here. First,
of all NXT battleground happened this past weekend and shocker
of all shockers, Trick Williams beating Joe Hendry. Trick Williams
(55:52):
is now the new TNA World Champion. So if you
remember called this was the first time that the tea ATNA, well,
first time the TNA World Title has been defended on
ww programming and it was Trick Williams. And now Trick
Williams is the TNA World Champion that has met with
(56:15):
a lot of criticism. In fact, Tuesday night on NXT,
none other than Mike Santana, a TNA roster member, stepping
up to challenge Trick Williams for that TNA World title.
I think that's gonna happen next week, so that should
be a fun match. A wonderful note, So I mentioned
(56:40):
last week about Jim Ross night, ivery know that he
has been diagnosed with colon cancer. Well he went, he
had successful surgery Tuesday morning and they are hopeful that
they have removed all of the cancer. So hopefully that
is good news for Jim Ross. You know, the AW
(57:04):
calls him the Hall of Fame voice of professional wrestling,
and he is. He would never admit it, but you
know he he is in that conversation with the Gordon
Solis of the world, and you know, people like Bob
Coddle and Lance Russell, and he's in that conversation. And look,
(57:29):
I said it last week, I'll say it again. I
think all wrestling fans want Jim Ross to get better,
get healthy. He said himself. He has no plans to retire.
He hopes to be able to be on the call
for at least a match at all in Texas, and
(57:50):
I think that would be a wonderful honor for someone
with the credentials, someone with the voice that Jim Ross has.
I'm not going to root for his entrance music because
(58:11):
it's a boomer center and I am a I am
a i Blee burnt Orange, But I think I might
have a tear in my eye when I see Jim
Ross come out to that commentary. I hope he's able
to do it. I hope that, you know, again, he
can get healthy and can be healthy enough to be
(58:32):
there at Global life Field. Dark Side of the Ring
had their season finale Tuesday night and it was on
Mark Upani. Now you may not know the name Markapani,
but he used to be known as Mohammed Hassan if
you remember, back in the I think it was two
(58:52):
thousand and four, two thousand and five, Vince had the
idea of setting this guy up as a Arab American
and he was taking issue with the tributes, you know,
because this was you know, still you know, it was
nine eleven, was still fresh in everybody's mind, and and
then it just turned dark, turned way too sinister even
(59:15):
for him. And in fact, on the on this episode
of Dark Side of the Ring, he talks about how
he was hesitant about some of the things that he
was asked to do and it got it got to
a point. I think there was a they showed where
it was an episode of SmackDown where he did the
throat slashing thing on Seawn Michaels, and that was it.
(59:41):
The it was that was back when Smack Dumb was
on the up UPN network if you remember that from
back in the day, and the network said, nope, we
ain't doing this anymore. You gotta take him off. No,
no more, no, you know, and that was it. And
he was done. He was done with done with not
you know, he was done with wrestling. He was done
with w W and he couldn't get booked, and you know,
(01:00:04):
he was and it was it was you know, throughout
the episode they talked about how he got fired basically
for doing what he was told to do. He had
he had reservations about it, but he did what he's
told to do. And you heard from guys like Gene
Snitsky and Chris Masters, who was in you know, he
(01:00:25):
was in OVW with him and he saw the talent
that Mark Uponi had. But because he got caught up
in this angle with Muhammed you know as Mohammed Asan
and everything with Sean Davari, who, by the way, Shan
Davari now one of the agents, one of the backstage
agents for WWE, and you see him come out whenever
(01:00:47):
they have the you know, they bring out the officials
to break up a brawl or something. He's out there,
so a fascinating watch for sure. If you if there's
if you can watch it. I'm sure Vice will rerun
it a few times. And I think the Dark Side
of the Ring the episodes will end up on Hulu eventually,
(01:01:09):
so check it out. Always ends, always a great show.
