Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is hang Man Adam Page, and you're listening to
sports guys talking wrestling.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
When they're not covering the sports world. They're talking about
the world or professional wrestling. It's sports guys talking wrestling.
Now here's Stu Myrick. It is sports guys talking wrestling.
Stu Myrick here recovering from a very busy weekend in

(00:28):
pro wrestling. Glad you could join me. Ae W had
their biggest show of the year, aew all in Texas
in Arlington at Globe Live Field, the home of the
Texas Rangers, the twenty twenty three world champion Texas Rangers,
and I would think by all accounts, it was a success.

(00:52):
I was there. Someone else that was there joins me
now on the Hotline. You read it stuff on the
Takedown on Sports Illustrate. He's also on the SNY Network
end he does the Extreme Life of Matt Hardy podcast
with Matt Hardy. It is my good friend John Alba. John,

(01:12):
it's good to see. I heard you were telling me
before we started travel issues, so you didn't actually get
home till yesterday, But have you have you at least
started to recover from the weekend.

Speaker 1 (01:26):
Recovery is subjective in that sense, I would suppose, but
enough to get on here and hop and chat with you.
So I appreciate the time. And it was a good
time in Dallas. I really did have a good time.
It was good seeing you. It's good seeing so many
people that haven't seen a long time, you know.

Speaker 2 (01:41):
Yeah, it was great to see everybody there.

Speaker 1 (01:43):
And that was the first aw event I've traveled for
since twenty twenty two. Actually, okay, I did the math
and yeah, twenty twenty two, and I was at almost
every single one prior to that, so it was it
was a I was racking in my head. I'm like,
oh wow, it's been a long time since I've traveled
for an aw event. So it was a good time.

Speaker 2 (02:03):
Well let's start. Let's start way I usually start these.
Give me a letter grade for aew all in Texas.

Speaker 1 (02:11):
I mean, I thought it was a strong B plus
event overall, you know, a little bit of a week undercard.
I felt like nothing was bad on the undercard by
any means, but I think there was definitely some stuff
that just sort of existed for the sake of existing
and maybe never got to the level of some of
the very best of the stuff on this show, and

(02:33):
I think it also wasn't necessarily aided by something that
happened in one of the featured main events that I'm
sure we'll talk about, But I thought there of the
four main event matches, three of them really really delivered.
And when that happens, maybe it's an A minus. Maybe
as being a little too harsh, maybe it's an A minus.
And I also felt like some of the pacing of

(02:54):
the card over the six hour show was a little
maybe not necessarily threaded in the way that I would
have done so personally, But all things considered, what matters
most to do is that people leave happy and without
a doubt that is exactly what happened on the show.

Speaker 2 (03:10):
Yeah, and I'd agree with the with the A minus.
I think, you know, obviously the lengthless show six hours,
if you count just the main pay per view in
the pacing was it wasn't It wasn't bad. There was
probably a couple of spots they could have redone and
I just.

Speaker 1 (03:28):
Would have reordered some of the card more than anything else.
But but overall I thought this the show delivered a
happy ending, and that's when when it comes to big
payoff shows that have months in the building that that's
what you need to do, because if it didn't end
on a happy note, then you got thirty thousand people
there who are pretty upset. And yes, I was at
WrestleMania thirty nine. I don't know, I don't remember if

(03:50):
you were.

Speaker 2 (03:50):
I was there there, that's.

Speaker 1 (03:52):
Right, and it's right you were there with Connor Casey
and I and it was just leaving that venue. It
was like a funeral. So I'm glad that that wasn't
a similar feeling on Saturday.

Speaker 2 (04:06):
Yeah, you're right. I mean, let's let's talk about the
main main event, and as I have I put uh
put out our national nightmares over. John Moxley taps out
after being choked with the chain. Hang man. Adam Page
freeze the belts from the briefcase. He is your new

(04:27):
AEW World champion. Couple nice touches. First of all, the
chain he gets from of all people, swore of Strickland.
And then when he takes the belt out of the briefcase,
it still had Brian Danielson's side plates on it from
when he lost it to Moxley back in October. We've

(04:48):
already talked about this is the ending that had that
had to happen, it was going to be that was there.
Was there anything in that match that you would have
changed the run ends? I and I wrote down Willia You,
de Claude, Castanoli, will Osbury, Gabe Kid, Brian Daniels and
Young Bucks, Darby, Allen, Prince, Nanna and Swerve as the

(05:08):
run the ends, and I think we all kind of
figured Tony was going to do this because I think,
in my mind, I have nothing to base this on,
But in my mind, he wanted Hangman to have the
same moment there that Cody had at Wrestmen forty one.
Give me your thought.

Speaker 1 (05:30):
Forty Yeah, I mean, listen, there's obvious parallels to be had,
needless to say, and the stories were set up in
a very similar arc towards the end that allowed for that.
But the biggest thing when you do these run ins
right in these Bloodline Rules style matches, is that all
of the interferences in those moments have to be earned.

(05:51):
They have to be earned. And that's why I didn't
love when they did it at Crown Jewel with WWE
and the CM Punk and John Cena match was like, Okay,
there are guys who have maybe been involved with some
of the Sena crew and the Rollins crew and all that,
but like, at the same time, it hasn't been that long.
They're getting full scale entrances in the middle of the match,

(06:13):
and it just didn't feel like you needed that action
to get to the end result of the match, right
Whereas I felt like in this all of the action
that we saw aided the ending and the long term
story that was being wrapped in that moment. When you
have a match of this magnitude, you have to ask yourself,

(06:35):
and you can ask yourself the same thing about the
WrestleMania forty match with Cody. If this television show AW,
WWE whatever, if this show ended today, this was the
series finale of aw would this be a satisfactory ending
to this show as a series, And that's exactly how
they delivered it. I liked that there were no entrances.

(06:58):
It didn't necessarily feel like put one foot in front
of the other. Oh, this person has to happen, so
now this has to happen. And I like the fluidity
of that. The only like mindor tweak I probably would
have added. I felt like the Mountain video was very
out of place. That played randomly in the middle of
the match. Yes, and and look, if death matches aren't
your thing, then all of this is no one void

(07:20):
and it's fine. But yeah, all things considered, Man, I
thought they stuck the landing and the crowd reaction was
there for it, and I thought the moment would swerve
was just really really well done.

Speaker 2 (07:30):
It was. It was very well done. Yeah, the Darby
Allen on the mountain, I think, I don't know if
they timed it wrong, because it was it was Darby
Allen video, then Brian Danielson and then Darby Repels from
the ceiling. I would have switched that a little bit.
What did you think of will Osprey getting pilmanized the
earlier SMO Joe And then.

Speaker 1 (07:50):
That was the important part. That was the important part, right,
Like you had to establish that earlier in the night,
that that the death Riders were capable of doing that.
So therefore it was a bit of a breadcrumb dropped
that they could revisit. And yeah, a lot of people are, oh,
you know, he doesn't tell stories. Well, that's a bread
crumb for a show long story that they told that
the Death writers were capable of doing this. And I

(08:12):
actually liked that and for it to be ospray. What
was effective about that was twofold. It took Swerve away
from Osprey in the moment where the focus just had
to be on Swerve, right. That's that was a critical part.
But also it perhaps was a result of will Osprey's

(08:35):
over excitement and eagerness to get involved, to show, hey,
like you get really eager here. These guys are still killers,
They're still badasses. They can take you out. And I
thought that served the story pretty well.

Speaker 2 (08:50):
Yeah, okay, and that makes it makes total sense, It
really does. Well. Let's mention we know tomorrow night on
Dynamite it's mox Claudio and I guess I think, wi
will you to against Hangman? I forget who the other
two are, O, Mark Brisco and Swerve.

Speaker 1 (09:10):
I think, uh the announcement, yes, yeah, I'll pull up
the thorn. Yeah, I did see it in Passing.

Speaker 2 (09:17):
Yes, But I mean past that, what do you think
is next for not only Moxley but also the death Riders?
Do they take time off? Do they keep wreaking havoc?
What I mean?

Speaker 1 (09:33):
I mean, look, I wouldn't hate if like what we're
about to see is the beginning of the end of
the Death Riders. I think naturally Moxley and Darby Allen
is probably the next way to go. I mean, Darby's
the one who really needs to ultimately get the revenge
on everything that happened with Moxley, right, Like, that's a
critical piece of all of this. So I would bet

(09:55):
that that's probably where this starts with, and then maybe
maybe that is the end. It's uh, it's Will Hobbs
Hangman and Mark Briscoe, by the way, versus U Mosley
and Claudio.

Speaker 2 (10:08):
Yeah, all right, I mean and that, Yeah, I'm I'm
with you. I I wouldn't mind seeing we start, you know,
start seeing dissension and whatever. Honestly, I wouldn't even be
that sad if Moxley goes on that you know, postponed
fishing trip he was supposed to go on a couple

(10:30):
of years.

Speaker 1 (10:30):
Ago, three years ago.

Speaker 2 (10:31):
Yeah, I wouldn't mind seeing that either. But we'll see. Uh,
let's talk about the the other big title change and
we so we got to start with Adam Cole. Adam
Cole comes out. It was it was it was announced
early in the day that Adam Cole wasn't going to compete.
He could not. He could not be medically cleared, so

(10:54):
there were going to be a four way for the
t n T Championship. He Adam comes out gives this
each basically relinquishes the title. Mentioned health issues. I think
Fightful Selections reported it may be related to concussion his jews,
and it was just, I mean, I don't know about you.

(11:17):
I was very I felt just horribly for him. I mean,
we all know him, we have all gotten to know him.
He is, you know, besides being one of the best
wrestlers around, one of the absolute genuinely best human beings
on this planet. Just give me your thoughts on Adam Cole,

(11:38):
you know, and you know, as he said, if this
is goodbye, you know, he he's lived his dream and
all that good stuff. Just give me your thoughts on
Adam Cole.

Speaker 1 (11:48):
Yeah, it's terribly sad situation. He's as he said, he's
a fantastic dude. He's great wrestler, responsible for one of
the best moments in aw history when he debuted in
twenty twenty one. He's one of the best of his era,
and it's unfortunate that he's just been so injured and
unhealthy the past few years, gets taken away his prime

(12:08):
and what he's capable of concussions. If that is the case,
that's never something to be messed around with, and they
made the right decision. I'm glad they made this decision.
If that's how he was feeling. I don't think it
was an easy decision for him to voluntarily pull off
the biggest show of the year. I would imagine it wasn't.
So yeah, it's just it's horrible. It's a horrible situation

(12:30):
all around. And you know, they really, like logically, you
would think that they were probably going to put the
title on Fletcher coming out of that match, but after
Adam Cole gives that speech, there's no way you can
have the crowd down, right, And they were not super
into the fore way for most of it because of
the speech, not because it was a bad match, It's

(12:50):
just it was a buzzkill, right and right when when
Dustin won, that's your boy. When when he won, I
think it was like, oh, holy shit, like yeah, that's
a feel good moment right there it was, And I
think that was the right call. And even if Dustin
were to lose the title this coming week, it's fine.
You get back on track to where you were going.
But given a guy a surprise. It's like when Zach

(13:10):
Ryder won the Intercontinental title a Mania and Nowhere winning
that ladder match, right, It's like a cool unexpected moment
that again the goal here send people home happy, and
I think it helped you that.

Speaker 2 (13:19):
Yeah, I couldn't agree more. It was you know, obviously
you know my relationship with Dustin being part of the
road Tress Association Road Tresting Academy, having known dust In
all these years, Neils say, that was a it was
a beautiful surprise, of course, having his nephews come out
there and in Roussell, Marshall, Von eric you know, to

(13:40):
help celebrate. And I had seen both Wayne and White
as well as Ross and Marshall earlier in the day
at Starcast and and.

Speaker 1 (13:47):
What a great moment the von Erica iron claw moment
was That was that was that was super fun. I mean, like,
you know it was gonna happen anyway.

Speaker 2 (13:55):
You can't have a show in Texas and have Kevin
von Erk there. He's got put the claw on somebody.
That was fantastic. So so yeah, congratulations to dust and
I know he is I know he's beat, but you
know everything he said and we got we got to
visit with him in the press conference afterwards, knowing dust

(14:17):
and that's that's him. He's he is emotional and he's.

Speaker 1 (14:21):
This the roads are emotional.

Speaker 2 (14:24):
He is He's this means the world to him. He
and I have talked many times about, you know, his
place in ae W and how much he loves Tony
Kahan and everything. So this was the thing.

Speaker 1 (14:36):
He could have left when Cody left, right like, he
could have he could have bounced, he could have had
a producer role on WWE. He could have done whatever
he wanted to. He could be an NXT and be
a great coach there, right, But he chose to stick around.
And I think Tony CON's taking pretty good care of
him for staying loyal. So all things considered, it's worked
out very well.

Speaker 2 (14:54):
Tony Storm retaining the a W Women's World title of
Mercedes Monet surprise.

Speaker 1 (15:01):
No, not at all. Actually, I reported this on my
Patreon Wrestling Cornalba dot com the week of the show
that the plan had been for Tony to retain for
some time and that was why she did. The match
was not title for title because they wanted her to
just not win the TBS title but still be able
to retain. And yet I thought they delivered a great match, man,

(15:23):
I thought that they got the I believe this was
the longest aw women's match to date, if I'm not mistaken.
I think it was around twenty six minutes. I think
you're never dragged at any point, you know, Mercedes. When
when Mercedes gets a chance to really get her matches rolling,
they're always paced so well. And I thought the pacing
of this match was really, really great. Tony Storm is

(15:45):
a big match performer. She never misses in those moments.
Mercedes one of the greatest sellers in wrestling history, and
they told a good story. And I don't know how
you felt, man, but I felt like Tony Storm was
maybe one of the top three most over things on
the show in general. Oh yeah, the reactions that Tony
Storm is getting were tremendous.

Speaker 2 (16:04):
I think you're right. Let me ask you, you know,
kind of like with the death Right. Okay, So what's
next for Mercedes? Does this does she keep collecting belts
or is this could.

Speaker 1 (16:15):
A little bit of I'd like to see the armors
start to come undone a little bit here with Mercedes.
I still feel like the long term plan with getting
that TBS title off of her has to run through Willow,
and I hope it does, because you know she wanted
from Willow. Willow has never had the one on one
win with her, and they've had great chemistry together, So

(16:38):
I think Willow beating the one to dethrone her the
TBS Championship would would be the right call.

Speaker 2 (16:43):
Yeah. Uh. Because Okada defeating Kenney Omega, he is now
the unified champion. He merges the continental title in the
International title right decision.

Speaker 1 (16:57):
The winner. Yeah, I mean, I'm fine with Okada winning
the match. That didn't really bother me. What bothered me
was just a horrible logic flaw in this match that
led to the finish where Don Kallis pulls the referee
out of the ring Stompson, and it's somehow not a

(17:18):
DQ And for a match that had so much hype,
that didn't need that, it didn't need that Gaga at all. Right,
Like the Okada Omega series is one of the most
revolutionary series of matches ever in wrestling. It's a huge
reason why I invest in wrestling the way that I have,
because I just fell so much deeper in love with

(17:39):
it seeing how much art was put into those matches.
And I did not expect this match to reach any
of the other four in terms of quality. It's eight
years later, almost, they're older, they're more beat up, but
I know that their masters of their craft. They're great
storytellers and there's no reason that they couldn't have told
a great story. And I thought they were telling a
really good story with the diverticulitis. It was a very
easy match to digest. And I'll tell you if they

(18:02):
delivered a more straightforward finish, I'm thinking, I'm looking at
this match is probably like four and a half, four seven,
five star kind of match. But you knew Callous was
going to get involved. That's fine, you don't need to
do it in a way that was so overtly a
disqualification that it just got overlooked. And I really took
the match down quite a bit from me. I was

(18:23):
really dissociated from the rest of the match after that happened,
because I was like, why am I even watching? Like
if the rules don't matter, then what's the point. And
you know, I'll tell you if you watch the press conference,
I think it was me opining. I think Tony realized
that they made a mistake and how they did that
as he was explaining the rules during the press conference, Like,

(18:45):
I think he recognized that there was oversight on that.
I could be wrong, but it took away from the
match for me. I don't know how you felt about it,
but I left just pretty disappointed in that.

Speaker 2 (18:55):
Yeah, it kind of you know, it brought it from
you know, the the culmination of one of the greatest
rivalries in pro wrestling to almost like just another match.
And and you're right, I don't think we were we
were going to expect what we saw, say Dominion twenty
eighteen or something like that. But again, it's still Okada Omega.

Speaker 1 (19:18):
You know, they were both really good in the match.
They were it was Ocada's best match in a w.

Speaker 2 (19:22):
Yeah, oh easily. Yeah. And I'll and I'll say this,
I have not I mean, Okata has has had a
good run in AW so far, but I don't know,
maybe I'm just spoiled with what we saw in New Japan.

Speaker 1 (19:40):
What we've gotten from him in AW is it doesn't
even remotely hold a candle to what he had in Japan.

Speaker 2 (19:47):
And I think he's capable of it now, whether he
wanted to, you know, do this, you know, the Elite
and then joining up with don Kallis whatever, maybe he
wants to do it. Maybe it's you know, kind of
like Nakamura in WW wants to just ride out the
thing so you can go surfing. But I don't know.

(20:07):
It just feels like Okada needs to go. He needs
to be Okada and not have don Kallis and not
have the Elite and let AW fans see the Rainmaker.

Speaker 1 (20:20):
Listen, like if they did this finish where like don
Kallis helped him cheat, I don't really care. That's fine,
that's wrestling. Heels cheat, right, But to have such an
overt what should have been a disqualification and to just
ignore it, that really bothered me. That's something that a
lot of other promotions would do that. I think AW

(20:43):
has the benefit of the doubt of not having a
history of overlooking stuff like that, and they totally overlooked
it in the biggest moment possible. And maybe they're gonna
run this match back because now it's two two to one, right,
like they're totally even. Maybe they're gonna run it back again.
But I don't know how you get it on a
bigger stage than what you had it here. So I
was pretty disappointed by that because it was a good
match until that point.

Speaker 2 (21:04):
Yeah, I agree, got step side for a moment. When
we return, John Alba and I will continue to break
down ae w All in Texas. Next on Sports Guys
Talking Wrestling.

Speaker 3 (21:16):
You know, ladies and gentlemen, this is Adam Colebay Bay
and you're listening to Sports Guys Talking Wrestling.

Speaker 2 (21:38):
Back here on Sports Guys Talking Wrestling, Stu Merik, John
Alba joining me, uh MJF and Athena win their respective
Casino Gauntlet matches. I think MJF we kind of expected
Athena was a bit of I'll be I thought it
was a little bit of a surprise. It was a
pleasant surprise, of course. Athena from the Dallas Fort Worth area.

(22:02):
You know she's she is the current Ring of Honor
Women's World Champion. Now she's got a shot at the
aw Women's World title. Anytime, any any thought on the
Casino Gauntlet matches. Besides in fact, I always I always
enjoy those things.

Speaker 1 (22:17):
I didn't like the men's one very much. I actually
thought the women's won far surpassed the men's one. There's
a lot more physical, there were more surprises, the near
falls were a little better, the finish was better. It
was a little less para. I did think Athena was
gonna win, but it was still not nearly as certain
as MJF winning for me. And what I liked about

(22:39):
Athena winning when she did on the show too, it
didn't necessarily telegraph the winner of Tony Storm and Mercedes
Monnet because you could see Mercy, you could see Athena
facing either of them right, like she kind of sits
in the middle of a tweener where it's like, if
you needed to be a babyface, you probably can. If
you need to be the heels, she can. So I
liked that element of surprise with it. My biggest problem
with this match to and having two of them on

(23:01):
one show is a lot. It really is, and just
like it is for WW with the two Royal Rumbles
when they do them. But the issue with the stipulation
is that the idea should be you want to be
number one or two in the match, because in theory,
the match can end at any point, So unlike the
Royal Rumble, where you want to be at the end,

(23:22):
and here you want to be in the beginning. They
have not set the precedent that the match can actually
end early, like in theory you know that it can,
but everyone's like, oh, the first two will wrestle, then
someone else will come out, and someone else will come out,
and someone else will come out. We need to have
a casino Gauntland. I wouldn't have done it on this
show because the show is so grand in nature, but

(23:43):
we need to at some point have a casino gauntlet
where the match ends pretty early, whether it's the first
two guys or three or four, like within the first five,
the match has to end. It should end at someone's
making an entrance. I agree, because then you're telling the audience, hey,
these matches truly can end at any point, and we

(24:04):
don't need ten people, twelve people, fifteen people. And it
makes the entrances and who's coming out even more impactful
based on where they show up. In the men's match,
was I mean, Mystico had his entire entrance and he's
standing in the middle of the ring and people are
doing it like it was funny. But it's like, dude,
it'sn't the whole point in this match sense of urgency right,
and there was just no sense of urgency at all

(24:25):
on the men's match. The women's match had much more
sense of urgency.

Speaker 2 (24:28):
I felt like, Yeah, I think you're right. Uh swore
striking the Lost Pray beat the Young Bucks, so young
Bucks are no longer EVPs, kind of like with Cole
with the Death Riders. Does this start a a path
for the Bucks back to I don't know, the back

(24:49):
to being Matt and Nick instead of Matt, Dew and Nicholas.

Speaker 3 (24:53):
I don't know.

Speaker 1 (24:53):
Maybe, I mean by the end of the Death match,
it didn't really feel that way. But the Bucks they
are better as heels than there as babyfaces and aw
I just think the characters maybe need a little bit
of tweak. But man, this match, I'm I'm in the
camp that the Bucks are some of the greatest pro
wrestlers of all time. I think the Bucks are masters

(25:15):
at crafting matches, and the great irony being when people
watch Bucks matches on the surface level they just say, oh,
it's all flips and all this stuff. Man, the Bucks
matches have more story and callbacks than pretty much anybody
else's matches. Like and if you're truly paying attention to
their feuds or the stories within the promotion. All of
these matches are just full of callbacks and big moments.

(25:37):
The sequence in the middle of that match that led
to that double down was one of the greatest sequences
I've ever seen in an American wrestling tag match. Like legitimately,
I thought it was an all time classic match. I
thought it was up there, and not everyone seems to
agree with me, but watching it live, I'm gonna tape
study it on my Patreon this week wrestling Cornalba dot com.

(25:57):
I felt like this was one of the best tag
matches in AW history period and did not expect Swerve
an Osprey to win, but they got the happy moment
and hey, that's cool.

Speaker 2 (26:09):
Yeah I was. I was a little surprised at that too.
It was it was. It was good. You know, I'm
of the camp. You know AW matches, ab W pay
per view matches almost too uh to a single one
could could lose about three to five minutes each just

(26:32):
because it felt like felt like it was like, okay,
this one, this one, it was great. I wasn't a
fan of all the false finishes because it's like every time.

Speaker 1 (26:42):
But Stu, but this match had like actual stakes, like
there were legitimate stakes on the match, and I get that.

Speaker 2 (26:47):
I get that. I I don't know, it's just you know,
may and maybe it was just because it you know.

Speaker 4 (26:52):
It was if we were there, I was like, all right,
come on, so, uh, Patriarchy turns on Christian Cage after
it hurt Syndicate retain the tag titles.

Speaker 2 (27:04):
Nick Wayne hits the kill switch on on Christian Cage
and then here comes Adam Copeland. I suspect this is
what everybody what they were talking about the reports about.
Christian wanted one more angle with Nick Wayne before he
started doing the reunion with with Adam. What'd you think?

Speaker 1 (27:25):
Yeah, you know, the match itself was fine speedball Mike
Bailey is like one of the best in the world
at getting crowds to fire up for big moments, and
he was great and this as he always is. And
Kevin Knight's really good too. Yeah. I mean it was
a pretty convoluted angle, but it was easy to follow
even if convoluted. Copeland comes down, makes a save and

(27:49):
I wanted him to tell him to go himself. I
wanted to see him do that, be like I wanted
to be. He makes the save because he knows deep
down it's the right thing that he should do. Right
and Christian like is actually somewhat appreciative and like then
Adams and Adam's like, no, like because it's like a

(28:10):
tough love sort of thing, like go yourself and go
find yourself. Yeah, that's that's what I would have done,
rather than just the corny Disney go find yourself.

Speaker 2 (28:22):
Well, And I think I think there's probably a little
bit of tough love in that. All right, you need
to you need to you know, fix yourself before you
and I talk you or whatever. So I get it.

Speaker 1 (28:33):
But I would have I would have brought a full
circle though. I would have gone like all the way
in on it. And yeah, I think I can understand
why they didn't, But I just was like, man, like,
you've already reached a certain threshold to true ride it.

Speaker 2 (28:47):
Yeah, all in all, I mean, I think, like we said,
I think they they had a successful pay per view.
It was man, uh six hours plus two hour apreciow
plus two you know, a couple hours for the press conference.
Anything from the press conference strike you. I know you
you and asked you asked the question about Adam Cole.

(29:09):
You know, when did they find out about you know,
Adam Cole's healthy issues. But anything that and otherwise that
you took from the press conference, not really it's.

Speaker 1 (29:22):
Good on my completely honest opinion.

Speaker 2 (29:25):
They know it's there for content.

Speaker 1 (29:27):
I mean, if you want me to go off, I'll
go off. And this is not like calling anybody else.
I don't even know who asked it, and it's not
a personal thing, right, But like, if we're there covering
a show for seven hours, eight hours, whatever it is,

(29:47):
and you're asking Athena to her face, does her wind
feel bigger than Goldberg's retirement? Like, I just I don't
know what we're doing. I really it's a bad look
for everyone. And I understand you're trying to be cheeky
and fun, but like it just was a bad look
And I don't know, man, Like there are people who
go to these shows as media and they don't do
a single thing of work and they're just there to

(30:08):
watch the show and tweet. But I don't know about you.
I turned five articles during the show, Like there are
other people around me working, and I don't appreciate those
people's I'm being wasted by a question.

Speaker 2 (30:19):
Like I couldn't agree more with you. Look, you know,
and you and I have done sports media. We've covered
you know, NFL, major League Baseball, NBA, whatever, you know,
We've learned the rules of being a as objective as possible,
you know, report or whatever. And I think we both

(30:42):
we both realized wrestling media doesn't have the same.

Speaker 1 (30:47):
Well, dude, it's like, it's like, if you're gonna ask
if you don't want to ask a hard question, a
hard hitting question, that's fine, there's nothing wrong with that, right,
but ask a productive question.

Speaker 2 (30:59):
Yeah, there's well, there are people in there. I seriously
think there are. There were those in there that figured
out they could do a podcast using the record thing
on their phone, and you know, so they're gonna call
themselves media so they could get the free ticket and
then you know, uh, you know, my, like my, it's

(31:22):
another silly thing, but it's it's it means something to me.
You come into the press box wearing somebody's merch y.
That's that would be like me walking into AT and
T Stadium and walking in the press box wearing the star. Yeah,
don't do that.

Speaker 1 (31:40):
Not great.

Speaker 2 (31:40):
But there's a bunch of them like I said, I
get it, so, uh, John, promote everything. Tell everybody where
they can find you. You mentioned the Patreon, Please tell
us about the Patreon and everything else.

Speaker 1 (31:53):
No, it's cool. Mand Wrestling corn albu dot COM's where
we do Q and A's We do tape studies every
week where we watch matches and break them down and
just get through the art of the business a little more.
We have an awesome discord. I drop some scoops there
every now and then. It's a really fun time. I
highly encourage you wrestling corn aalba dot com. Plus you
get live tapings of The Extreme Life for Matt Hardy,

(32:14):
the podcast I Hope with Matt Hardy, I host with
Matt Hardy rather drops every Friday. Wherever you get your
podcasts if you're in the New York City area, I'm
on smy Sports at New York, the TV home of
the Mets, so you can find me on how To
Sports Night there or on some select Mets games coverage
and Sports Illustrate The Takedown. That's where I do pretty
much most of my wrestling work, so where you can

(32:36):
find all my stuff. It's four of my nine jobs too.
That's how we do it.

Speaker 2 (32:40):
That's what we do. I get it. That's what we do,
John Albat, I appreciate it, man. It was so good
to see you.

Speaker 1 (32:46):
Yeah, it was a great seeing man.

Speaker 2 (32:47):
And hope we see each other again soon.

Speaker 1 (32:49):
Definitely.

Speaker 2 (32:50):
So John Albat one of the best out there. I've
been lucky enough to know him for quite a few years.
And always a professional, you know, you know, he's still
grinding at it with Sports Net New York doing the
Mets cover or the yeah, the Mets coverage and everything,
and still you know, covering wrestling. He's just a consummate

(33:13):
professional NIO. I appreciate him coming on to share his thoughts.
We also had Ring of Honor Supercart of Honor on
Friday night. He was at the Eastports Stadium there in Arlington,
the former Arlington Convention Center. The big news coming out
of there Red Velvet. Who's the Ring of Honor Women's
World TV Champion. She was not clear to compete. She

(33:37):
has an injury and I haven't seen a report as
to what that injury is, but apparently she is not
serious enough for her to have to relinquish the title,
So they decided to crown an interim Women's TV champion
they had a four way Mina Sharikawa Milamashta Persephone and
Yukosa Kazaki. In the end shirak Kala getting the pen.

(34:01):
I think it was on Yamashta Mina. Shira Kala is
now the new interim Ring of Honor Women's World Champion,
and we you know, you know that as soon as
red velvet is cleared, we will have that match to
you know, determine the real champion once and for all.

(34:23):
I know, the titles were you know changed, Bandido able
to beat Takeshta to retain the Ring of Honor World title,
Dustin and Sammy the Sons of Texas uh retaining the
infantry over the infantry infantry attacked them after or Shane
Shane Taylor Promotions attacked them afterwards. And that's what's set

(34:45):
up the ape Man tag on the Zero Hour Show
for all in uh So, the reports are that that
rival we will continue. Athena defeating thunder Rosa to retain
the Ring of Honor Women's World title. She is the

(35:06):
forever Ring of Honor champion. Thing they were saying, I
think Ian Ricabini was saying something like nine hundred and
fifty days now as you know, a ring of honor
Women's World Championship. Of course, now she's got that aw
Women's World title shot anytime she wants it, winning the

(35:26):
Casino Gauntlet. But yeah, all in all, it was a
good show and looked like a great crowd there at
the Esports Stadium. One other note, and this was actually
announced during the Claw Pod, which is the podcast that
Ross and Marshall Vaughan Eric have, they announced that Kevin,

(35:50):
their father, of course, the legend, the icon, Kevin von
Eric has now signed a deal with ae W and
it's something like the Legends deal that WW does. Apparently
he is going to start coaching, which I think that'd

(36:10):
be fantastic have Kevin back there. I mean, Tony Kahan,
he he gathers some legends in the back, whether with
Dustin and de Malenko and Jerry Lynn and now Kevin
von Eric back there. I think that's fantastic and and
any chance to get Kevin von Eric back involved in

(36:34):
wrestling is a huge win. So so happy for Kevin.
And you know, obviously I said I mentioned I got
to see Ross and Marshall at Starkcast. It was so
good to see them. By the way, their ranch which
is in Bernie, which is kind of near you know, Curville.
As such, it was not They did not have any

(36:56):
damage from the flooding, so that's good. Uh, although you
might imagine they were pretty pretty concerned. But it was
great Ce Ross and Marshall, great Sea Wayne and Whyatt
Roads and their mother Christen there at star Cast and
you know, I'm I couldn't be proud of those guys.
So all in all, it was I I think it

(37:20):
was a slam dunk weekend for AE w Inn Arlington.
They knocked it out of the park. They did it
and and you know used the using the baseball term
being at global Ie Field, but they really did it.
Was it was a great time. So I'm gonna take
a quick time out when I come back. W W
was busy this weekend as well. I'll recap Saturday night's

(37:42):
main event as well as Evolution. Next on Sports Guys
Talking Wrestling, Bow Down, Low Down, bow Down, loud Down,

(38:03):
All hell the Queen. This is WWE superstar Charlotte Flair
And you're listening to Sports Guys Talking Wrestling.

Speaker 1 (38:14):
Remember if you're gonna do it, do it with Flair.

Speaker 2 (38:16):
Who back here On Sports Guys talking wrestlings. Do myrick.
WW was busy this weekend as well in Atlanta. Uh start,
We'll start with Saturday night's main event, which was Saturday
night in Atlanta. They're at the State Farm Arena. Honestly,

(38:42):
the only big news item out of that, and it
is pretty sizable. Seth Rawlins suffers an apparent leg injury,
a knee injury during his match with La Knight. They
had to basically change Finnan. You know, Seth was going
to but I had to call the audible l A

(39:02):
Knight getting the victory. Reports were that he was backstage
at Evolution on crutches. We have not heard how severe
the injury is. We haven't heard how you know, if
you know how long he'll be out, it's it's a

(39:27):
it's a it's a I guess, a dilemma. There are
those that think this is a work. Every report I've
seen so far says it's not. It's it's a legit injury.
I would think we would hear something over the next

(39:48):
you know, either I would have thought we heard something today,
but maybe this week we'll hear something. But nevertheless, seth
Rawlins injuring his knee. We'll see if he keeps him
out for a long time. Remember he's mister money in
the bank. He's got that contract now. He has until

(40:10):
June of next year to cash it in. So even
if he's out for a while, he still got hit.
He should still have time. I mean, unless it was something,
unless it's something really serious like torn acl MCL, you
know that type of thing. It is, it is plausible
he could still come back in time to do the

(40:32):
cash in. So we'll see guntherro Goldberg. Gunther of course retains.
I saw today Goldberg was on Area Hawane show. He
was he was happy about the match. He actually enjoyed

(40:53):
wrestling Gunther, but he was upset about apparently he was
given his speech afterwards and he was cut off because
he was on NBC. They had a heart out at
nine pm Central or ten pm. I can think it

(41:14):
was ten pm something like that. Anyway, they had a
heart out because it's NBC network television. He was upset
about that. And there's a couple of other things, like apparently,
you know, because he was he'd only been you know,
they only did the build over, you know, the course
of like a few weeks. So there's some stuff that

(41:36):
he wasn't happy about with the match, and I get it.
I understand. I think this was it. It did feel
a little like, oh, let's you know, we got to
book this, so you know, I guess, I don't know.
Randy Orton Drew McIntyre. Orton gets the win and Jelly

(42:00):
Roll was with him the yes, the country music singer,
and Logan Paul was with Drew McIntyre. They had an angle.
So basically what it boils down to, it's going to
be Randy Orton and Jelly Roll facing Logan Paul and
Drew McIntire at Summer Slam. Raise your hand if this

(42:25):
is the match you were craving for, not me. I
said that I was on so, you know, my usual
co hosting duties on The Mark Coke Show Sunday mornings
ten ten am to noon Central eight to ten am
Pacific on Kaydon FM in Las Vegas and of course
streaming on Odyssey APP. I said this on Mark Coke

(42:50):
Show that it feels like WWE and probably TKO seem
more interested in having these celebrity moments than having actual,
you know, like logical wrestling.

Speaker 3 (43:12):
It.

Speaker 2 (43:12):
You know, every every show, every raw, every SmackDown, they
have celebrities in the crowd, they'll focus on them and
all this stuff. But it feels like they want they
want the eyeballs on social media or you know, they
want this, and I'm it's I think it is too.

(43:38):
I think it is to the detriment of the product
because you have a deep roster, you have a fantastically
deep roster. You got a lot of folks in the
back that could use that TV time, but it's dead.
You're giving it to Jelly Roll, or you're giving it
to Travis Scott, or you're giving it to Bad Bunny,
or you're you know, it's it feels like they're more

(44:04):
worried about celebrities. I don't know, but whatever. So anyway,
that was Saturday Nights Man event on Saturday. Then they
turned right around less than twenty four hours later for
Evolution from State Farm Arena, and honestly, this was the

(44:25):
much better This was a much better show than Saturday
Nights Man event. It really was. Of course, the big
news Naomi cashing in her money in the bank contract
while io Sky was defending the Women's World title against
rear Ripley. Naomi comes down, cash is in becomes a
three way, Naomi wins. Naomi is your new Women's World Champion.

(44:52):
So congratulations to Naomi. Monday night on Raw, they set
it up. It is for Summers I am a triple
threat Naomi defending against rear Ripley and Neo Sky for
the Women's World title, setting that up for SummerSlam. By
the way, it was, Yeah, as soon as Evolution was
over last night on Raw, it was like kickstarting the

(45:15):
SummerSlam build. So there's that kind of interesting because earlier
in the night, Naomi lost to Jake Cargill in the
No holds bard match. So does that set up Jade
to say, well, hey I beat you there, I can
beat you for the title. Now here's thing, Naomi had

(45:38):
to switch brands because the Women's World title is on Raw.
Tiffany Stratton still has the Women's Championship, the w W
Women's title as she was able to retain over Stratus,
So Naomi is now on Raw. From you know, there

(46:00):
was there was chatter that that ended the feud for Jade.
So now Naomi's going forward as the Women's World Champion
on Roll. We'll see. I don't know, I mean, it
could be interesting. You had j C Jane defending the
NXT Women's title against Jordan Grace. Blake Monroe, the former Moriama,

(46:25):
comes out with Jordan Grace and it ends up hitting
Jordan Grace with the title belt, turning on Jordan Grace,
which it was kind of like, okay, you know, over
under on, how how long before Blake Monroe turns Hell, Well,
it didn't take very long. I mean, she's a heel.

(46:46):
She she's a natural heel. Look at what she did
in AUW with Tony Storm, you know. So uh So,
now I guess we'll see Jordan Grace and Blake Monroe
going forward. Stephanie vecour win the Battle Royal had women
from all three brands, so Stephanie Vcuurr will get a

(47:10):
title shot against Tiffany Stratton at Clash in Paris. Now
I say it's Tiffany Stratton. Jay Cargill as Queen of
the Ring has her shot at Tiffany Stratton at SummerSlam,
So who knows, we'll see, but congratulations Stephanie Vercouurr. Becky

(47:34):
Lynch defeating Bailey and Larra Valkyria to retain the women's
Inner Continental Championship and then last time I'll rob Bailey
losing to Lyra. Lyra will now get a one on
one shot at Becky and that Women's Inner Continental Championship
at SummerSlam. And the match of the story was you

(47:55):
know Bailey and Lyra, you know, their friendship going down
the drain. Uh. And then the fatal four way for
the tag titles or Kel Rodriguez, Ruxe and Perez winning
against Charlotte Flair and Alexibiliss, the Kabuki Warriors Oscar and Kyrie,
Scene and Soul, Roka and Zaria from NXT. Uh. The

(48:17):
surprise was Charlotte Flair getting cheered. Uh. There was there
was a there was a very audible we want Charlotte
chant and Alexa Bliss obliged him. She tagged Charlotte in So,
I don't know, it's so weird. People hate her, people
like her. You know, It's like, what's going on? I

(48:39):
don't know, But anyway, Uh So that was evolution. I
mentioned Naomi defending at SummerSlam against Ria and Eou. We
also know who's going to who's going to face Gunther
for the World Heavyweight Championship at SummerSlam. It's none other
than c M. Punk. He survived the gauntlet match. Uh,

(49:04):
he beats braun Breaker, who had beat Panta l A
Knight and Jay Uso. C M Punk was the last hurdle.
Shenanigans Bronson Reid and then here comes Jay and then
here comes you know. Uh, it was a whole mess,
but cm Punk gets the wins. Ce MM Punk will
now go on to face Gunther for that World Headyweight

(49:25):
Championship at SummerSlam. So there's that all in all. Like
I said, a busy weekend there was a lot of
talk about how WW was trying to counter program against
a e W because they had NXT Great American Bash

(49:46):
during the day I and I read reports about how
basically they wanted to control the narrative on social media,
which look, I have shook I have shook my he
had about this for years. Ww's obsession, uh borderline just

(50:08):
psychotic obsession on so about social media? You know how
many views, how many hits, how many of this that
they wanted to control the narrative. Well, I don't know
about you. I think it backfired. I think it was
it was all about ae W. I think it was

(50:29):
all about all in Texas, and I think there was
even a couple of people saying, well, I think Tony
tried to counter program the counter programming by making sure
the main I guess it was. I think it was
the it was the Ocado Omega match, and definitely hang Man.

(50:51):
Moxley came on right as Saturday Nights Mad event was
coming on air on nbc SO, and like I said,
outside of the seth rawlins injury, there wasn't really much
to talk about. So, you know, I don't know, it's

(51:12):
it's all silly, it's all just yem I don't know.
It is what it is. I get it. So I'm
gonna take a quick time out. When I come back,
I will let you know what's happening in int wrestling
around the state of Texas. I will tell you about
that NXT Great American Bash as well as we got
a special coming up this weekend, TNA Slammerversary. I'll tell

(51:34):
you all about it next. On Sports Guys Talking Wrestling.

Speaker 5 (51:49):
This is too sick for this world, Zachary Wentz And
you're listening to Sports Guys Talking wrestlers.

Speaker 1 (51:55):
The best kid but an opinions.

Speaker 2 (51:57):
Except welcome back Sports Guys Talk Wrestling. Stu Myrick here,
Uh as I said it was. It was a busy weekend,
by the way, great Independence showing. You had GCW on
Friday night, I believe in Dallas. In fact, I saw
Joey Janella uh at the Sheraton there in Arlington where

(52:19):
Starcast was being hell. He and I chatted for a bit.
He was he was really pleased with the turnout and
the card and everything. So you had that, you had
House of Glory, which they run the Northeast. They had
a show in Dallas, had a great show there. So
all in all, it was a it was a cool weekend.

(52:40):
I hope, I really do hope. And I know all
in is set for London next you know, to go
back to London next year. And it was something I
wanted to ask Tony I didn't get a chance to.
I wanted to ask Tony con about given the the
attendance and everything at all, in which I think they're

(53:01):
saying probably near thirty thousand people at Globe Life, not
to mention the fact that every time they do a
show in Texas, whether it's Dynamitic Collision, Metroplex here in Austin,
HB Center, San Antonio, Houston, El Paso, the Valley, everybody

(53:26):
shows up, they're all enthusiastic. It's always a hot show.
And now you had your biggest event, and he said,
the biggest non ww gate in in North America, easily
the biggest aw event in North America. I hope he

(53:48):
seriously considers putting Texas into the pay per view rotation.
You know, we don't have toast all in every year,
but it'd be nice to see the Double or Nothing
or or Revolution or you know, uh, Wrestle Dream or

(54:08):
one of the other one of the other monthly pay
per views. It'd be cool to have those here. And
I hope that's I hope that's what happened, what happens
going forward. As the manager, We've got a few independent
cards coming up this weekend. Dragonslayer Pro Wrestling presents Ascension
Thursday at the Ridgely Theater in Fort Worth, Bell time,

(54:31):

And that's a look at independent wrestling around the state
of Texas. Wherever you may be, go out and support
independent wrestling. One other car that's happening this weekend Sunday night,
The Roads Wrestling Association head it up by the brand

(55:59):
new T and T champion, The Natural Dustin Rhoads presents
Hot Summer Nights this Sunday night, bell time, six pm Central.
It will be at the RWA Bullpen in lee Ander.
Tickets are still available. Go to Road Wrestling Association on
your favorite social media platform you'll see the link. It's

(56:22):
done through event bright. The card looks like this. Jimmy
House will defend the RWA Championship against t Y Shane.
This is a rivalry that's been born out over the
last couple of events. T Y Shane gets a shot
at the title. Maya World who you know, she's kind
of becoming a bit of a bult collector. Remember she

(56:44):
is still the Pure Prestige champion in Inspire. Well now
she wants a shot at the RWA Women's Championship, so
she will challenge Vert Vixen for that title. The new
RWA Tag Team Champions Aussie and Hit taking on Fordy Somnium,
a team out of the Carolinas. If I remember correctly,

(57:05):
good team should be a formidable challenge there for Aussie
and Hit. Cordell taking on the Rhodes Cup winner Movie
Mike Chad Lennox, and you know he will have Mama
Lennox as well as what's the lady's name her bodyguard anyway,

(57:25):
Chad Lennox will take on Alex Stevens, the Rhodes brothers,
Wayne and Wyatt coming off their appearance at all In
as well as Supercard of Honor. They will face Conflict Theory,
Corey Constantine and Professor Jordan Tyler, and then Vin Parker

(57:46):
taking out as Frustrations Unmop Guy, the man that cleans
and everything. Now he's got a Russell Vin Parker. Oh,
it's gonna be something to behold. Rod Wrestling sciation hot
summer Nights this Sunday, six pm Central at the RWA Bullpen.

(58:07):
Like I said, go to Road Russ Association on your
favorite social media platform. You will see the link to
buy tickets. Tickets are still available, Come on out. Should
be a fantastic show. As I mentioned, lots of ww
in Atlanta, including NXT Great American Bash at Center Stage,
the former home of WCW Saturday Night Oba Femei beating

(58:34):
Yoshiki na Mura to keep the NXT championship. Slavery Knocker,
big men, big media men slapping man meat, but all
in all a good match. You also had Ethan Page
retaining the NXT North American title over Ricky Saints. It

(59:00):
was a believe it was a false count anywhere. Yes,
it was a false count anywhere, apparently very very violent.
I didn't see because of course I was at all in.
But yeah, all in all, Page gets the wind, keeps
the title. I wonder what's next for Ricky. You've heard

(59:22):
the rumors that Ricky might get moved up to Rarchmackdown,
which I think would be fantastic. You know, uh, knowing
Ricky as I do, that'd be great. By the way,
if you haven't seen, he was on Cody Rhodes' podcast,
what do you want to talk about? Great great edition?

(59:43):
Check it out on social media and such. Soul Ruka
retaining the end of the women's North American title over
Isy Dame. You also had Javan Evans beating Jasper Jasper Troy.
So if it was by itself, it was. If it

(01:00:04):
wasn't up against aw's biggest event, I think it would
have been a fine show. It had been your typical
NXT show, I'm pretty sure it got hurt. Honest, well,
I say it got hurt. I'm sure there were those
that watched it because it was on Peacock whereas all
MS pay per view. But as I said, all M

(01:00:29):
was by far the better show. But anyway, so there
you go. TNA. They've got Slammiversary coming up this Sunday,
eight pm Eastern, seven pm Central. Get it on pay
per view as well as TNA Plus. It will be
at the UBS Arena, in the place Maxwell Jacob Freman

(01:00:49):
calls the most magical place in the world, Long Island,
New York. The card as it stands now in a
three way for the TNA World Champion Trick Williams from NXT,
who is the current TENA World Champion. He will defend
against Joe Henry and Mike Santana. I am not a

(01:01:13):
fan of having an NXT wrestler hold the TNA world title.
I don't know why, I'm just not so I would
like to see either Joe or Mike get a shot.
