Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is the American Nightmare, Cody Roads, and you are
listening to sports guys talking wrestling.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
When they're not covering the sports world. They're talking about
the world or professional wrestling. It's sports guys talking wrestling.
Now here's Stu Myrick. It is sports guys talking wrestling.
Stue Myrick here on a Tuesday. It is the first
(00:30):
week of August, which if you live in Austin or
Central Texas you know it is usually the hottest month
of the year. We've already seen temperatures creep up into
the hundreds, although the last couple of days they've stayed
down had some cloud cover, so it's been nice. Thanks
(00:53):
so much for joining me as we are still feeling
the fallout from the first ever two day Summer Slam,
which happened this weekend. WWE put you on there what
they call the biggest party of the summer. As my
(01:15):
good friend Simon Miller from What Culture calls it, Hot
WrestleMania SummerSlam Saturday and Sunday at MetLife Stadium, the home
of the New York Football Giants, as well as the
Jets Jets. Jets Jets shout out to Garrett Wilson former
Lake Travis Cavalier, Ohio State Buckeye and current Jets wide
(01:38):
receiver got to cover that young man. It was a pleasure,
so let's talk about it. The main event on Sunday night,
John Cena defending the undisputed WW Championship against the American Nightmare,
Cody Rhodes, and you know it was. It was a
(02:05):
weekend full of surprises, some interesting, all of them pretty
pretty much interesting for one reason or another. So let's
backtrack forty eight hours prior to that Friday night on SmackDown,
they were at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
(02:28):
Here comes John Cena to open the show and he
does his usual you know what we've seen over the
last was it since well since eliminade chamber? So five months?
Six months, a little over five months, where's the title backwards,
(02:50):
puts the towel behind his head and heads the ring,
gets in the ring, and instead of what we have
seen for the last five months, which is the usual fans,
(03:11):
bad relationship with the fans, I'm going to destroy Cody Rhoads.
I want to ruin wrestling, YadA, YadA, YadA. In the
span of fifteen not even fifteen ten minutes, turns it
around and becomes Babyface again. Cuts a baby Face promo
(03:33):
talking about he was led down a path you know that,
and promised things that didn't happen, basically throwing the rock
in Travis Scott under the bus, which I totally agree with.
And he started out by saying, you know, Cody Roads
(03:55):
knocked him out and quote forged his signature on the
contract for the street fight, and he thanked him. He said,
that's the kick in the pants I needed, or the
kick in the ass that I needed, and then went
on this tirade about he hasn't been himself. And I'm
(04:17):
sitting there, I'm watching it on USA Network. I'm sitting there,
I'm kind of going, okay, old on, let's where you
know what, when's the other shoe dropping, Let's see the swerve,
No swerve, And in fact, Cody comes out, He thanks Cody.
(04:41):
Cody gets a couple of beers, which, by the way,
were real American beers, you know, I mean memory of
Hulk Hogan, hands one to John, they toast and basically
said let's do it on Sunday, and that was it.
No swerve, no you know, sneak attack. It was. It
(05:08):
was like basically they just decided, okay, let's just make
him a babyface again. Now a lot of people and
I will be included in that, we're thinking, okay, doing
this on Friday. On Sunday we will see the heel
seene again. We get to Sunday. First out, Cody got
(05:36):
the skull helmet on, comes up the Cody Vader there
at the on the ramp at MetLife Stadium. It's you know,
and you know, and the SummerSlam crowd a little bit
like a WrestleMania crowd, so there was there was a
mixed reaction. Cody makes it the ring, though, does his
(05:58):
usual you know everything that music dies. Then John's music
hits John Cena and it starts out what we've seen
for the last five months, just black background, just John
Cena and here comes Sena and just seconds after he
(06:22):
comes out, boom the explosion of color and he is
hooping it up. He's greeting Stu. Here we go, we
(06:46):
got we gotta shout out to Stu, which, of course, hey,
I'll use it, even you know, does some you know,
high fives and stuff on his way to the ring.
So we get to the ring, they do the introductions.
(07:06):
Alicia Taylor, who's fantastic, does the intros, and John smiling
he's having fun, introduced Cody, introduced John. They ring the
bell and Cody and John come to the center of
the ring and they're facing off and they're soaking him.
(07:27):
You know, these crowd is going nuts. Crowd's loving it.
And they hug and then break out to a hockey fight.
But it was a hug first and for the next
thirty I think it was thirty seven thirty eight minutes,
(07:52):
we witnessed what is easily I mean, and he by
a country mile, John Cena's best match since turning heel
elimination Chamber. I mean, this was This was the John
Cena of oh of ten years ago. He was hitting
(08:13):
his moves, all the greatest hits. He looked fan. He
looked great for you know, forty eight years old beating
up all that gets uff. Yeah he's a step slower,
but he looked great. It was just eight It was
a street fight. Numerous times, John hits the AA, Cody
(08:33):
hits Crossroads, Cody hits Cody cutter. There was the there
was the moment where the fight spills out of the
ring and they they go into the crowd and they're fighting.
They're fighting. They wake their way back to the to
the stage, to the set, and then all of a sudden,
Cody and John go underneath so there's a there's like
(08:55):
a drape there and they go underneath the stage. It's like, oh, okay,
so what's happening now? Can't get a camera in there.
So then the cameras point back to the entrance where
the Cody Vader is. Also you see the light, you
see the little smoke, and you see this image rise
up and it's John Cena with Cody Roads across his shoulders.
(09:24):
Takes a few steps, does the AA onto the ramp,
then picks Cody back up, puts him back on his shoulders,
and then makes it down to the ring. All the
way to the ring. And this was a long ramp,
you know, because they're in MetLife Stadium, they're in a
football stadium and the NFL stadium. They make it down
(09:45):
of the ring. John you can tell John's probably a
little tired, and they fight some more. Cody takes a part.
It was the I think it was the bottom rope.
So they're out, they're outside the ring, Cody takes apart
that you know take, detaches the turnbuckle from the ring
(10:06):
post on the bottom rope, decides to use that the
ring buckle you know belt bolt, hits John Cena with
it and then was it John Cena used the kind
of used it in a modified STF. Cody reverses, then
(10:27):
uses the rope on John Cena. They fight a little more.
John Cena hits a like super avalanche AA off the
top rope through a table one too ooh, fight a
little more. Cody hits Cody Cutter from the top rope.
(10:51):
John's trying to make it back. He's to his knees
using the ropes. Cody is behind him, hits the select,
salutes him. Crossroads one, two, three, Cody roads for the
second time. Is the new undisputed WW champion. Like I said,
(11:12):
it was a really good match. There was the moment
where Cody hit like the three crossroads in a row,
which is you know, more often than not, that's the finish,
but John kicked out of it. We got to see superstena.
(11:32):
After the match, the referee hands the belt to Cody.
John eventually makes it back up, takes the belt and
puts it on, Cody puts it around Cody's waist. They hug,
you can tell, and Cody's crying. Cody's emotional. Cody raises
(11:59):
John's arm and then Cody leaves and gives John the
ring and the crowd is, you know, thank you, Sena,
and you tell Johnsena is soaken up. It's his final
Summer Slam. That's it. And if the show had gone
off the air right there, would have been great, would
(12:23):
have been perfect. But it didn't because as John is
soaking up the adoration of the fans, the music hits
and here comes Brock Lessner, a man we have not
(12:46):
seen in a WW ring for two years. It was
last time we saw him, In fact, it was SummerSlam
twenty twenty three when he lost to John to Cody,
Rhoads place goes nuts. Brock's got the cowboy hat. He
(13:12):
makes it down the ring. John's looking, you know, like
he's seen the ghost. Brock makes it, walks around the ring,
reminiscent of I think it was twenty twelve when Brock
came out to face Sena at the end of a
Monday Night raw, And just like in twenty twelve, man,
(13:35):
she climbs in the ring, Sena tries to hit a clothesline,
brock ducts, it catches John Cena, hits the F five
and leaves where to go man and there is okay,
So there is a lot to unpack here for sure.
(14:00):
So the reason that we have not seen Brocklesner in
a WW ring for the last two years has to
do with the fact that he is named in the
lawsuit that has been filed by Janelle Grant against Vince
McMahon and WW. It was also against John Lauren Nights.
(14:24):
John Lauren and Nights has since been taken off as
a as a defendant in agreement for cooperating with Grant
in her attorneys. Brock Lesner is named now the original
lawsuit it just mentioned a former UFC champion in current
WWE wrestler, which okay, I think we know who that was.
(14:49):
And then in an amended lawsuit it names it has
brock Lesner named in it. That lawsuit is it's still ongoing.
That is still an active lawsuit. No, it is a
civil lawsuit. It is not a criminal lawsuit. It is
a civil lawsuit. Brock Lesner is not a defendant in
(15:11):
this lawsuit. However, there are details in this lawsuit of
interactions shall we say between Brock Lesner and Janelle Grant
that are disgusting If true, that are just stuff that
(15:39):
you don't want to read. You don't really want to
read it. It was determined two years ago that because
of him being named in the lawsuit, it was better
off for them if Brock just does not appear on
(16:00):
ww program, and in fact they did. They pretty much
kind of just not referenced him at all until recently.
It was in the last probably the last couple months,
you started hearing his name being floated. Now, as I said,
(16:21):
that lawsuit is active. It is an active civil lawsuit,
so obviously that raises a lot of questions. Now, as
far as the questions it raises, the media didn't have
(16:44):
a chance to ask Triple H Paul Evec because you see,
WWE did away with the post event press conferences. They
didn't do one on Saturday night, they didn't on Sunday night.
Now it came out on Saturday that they weren't doing
(17:07):
the pressers anymore. It was kind of like, okay, interesting.
There had been some past instances when Triple H gets
confronted with an uncomfortable question whether it's about the lawsuit,
whether it's about something else, and quite honestly, he handled
(17:32):
it poorly. Now the Sunday night after we see brock
Lessner showing up in the ring. Now we know why
the pressers have been canceled because you know that Triple
H would be bombarded with questions. I had John Alba
(17:56):
from Sports Illustrated and as in one network on I
think it was last week. You know he was going,
but he was going to ask and if he didn't,
there was gonna be others. But no, instead they decide
we're gonna bring it back.
Speaker 1 (18:17):
It is.
Speaker 2 (18:20):
It's a choice. It was mentioned, I believe on Well, no,
it's Sunday night, so they do. They are still doing
post shows. They're still doing post event shows, but now
it's just the panel. Uh. I think Biggie Joe test tour,
(18:44):
a couple others you know out it's outside, and Triple
H came up. He said that John Cena requested that
he wanted to face brock Lesnar in a match because
Johnsen has got I think what maybe six appearances left
sixing something like that. He doesn't have many left because
(19:06):
this is his retirement year and Triple H stated that
John Cena wanted or requested brock Lesner. I'm gonna take
that with a little grain of salt, because I got
a sneaky suspicion. John C. Johnson is just being He's
(19:32):
being the good soldier that he has been for twenty
five years. He's gonna do what the company says. It
was interesting, while Triple H is out there, the crowd
(19:53):
is chanting, we want cross, we want cross. So you know,
I think it was Let's see, it was Saturday, Saturday night,
Sami Zay carrying cross, Sammy saying Sammy Zay wins the match.
The talk around the campfire is that carrying a cross
(20:15):
in Scarlet Bordeaux. Their WW contracts are coming up are
allegedly again this is what's been being reported. Allegedly they
are set to expire this month in August, and WW
has not approached them about re signing. And if you
(20:42):
if you follow carrying a Cross on social media to
see how he is posting, it seems like he is
resigned to the fact that he and Scarlet are no
longer going to be a part of WWE when those
contracts expire. So, while Triple H is out there, fans
(21:02):
are chanting, we want Cross, we want Cross, and Triple
H says something to the effect of, oh, what you
wanted Brock, you got Brock pre Obviously that's not what
they were saying. It seems WW doesn't care. They don't
(21:28):
care about the whatever the backlash is going to be.
They don't care about the fact that Brock Lessener is
named in this lawsuit. It is a it is a
sex trafficking lawsuit, which is very serious business. And look
(21:51):
so full disclosure, I work for a state government agency
here in Texas that has a very robust anti human
track program. Emphasis. We have a team in fact that
does presentations and such on you know, on human trafficking.
(22:18):
And the lawsuit that Janelle Grant had filed against Vince
McMahon and WW is basically a sex trafficking lawsuit. Now again,
it is a civil lawsuit, not a criminal so there
are no criminal charges as of now. But be that
(22:39):
as it may, I guess wwe there And in fact,
last night on Raw, Michael Cole mentioned something to the
effect of that, Yeah, Triple H and Nick Kahn reached
out to Brock several weeks ago and allegedly ww's legal
(23:03):
team has cleared brock Lesner. What that means I don't know. Again,
it's not a good nuck And right now we don't
know is this just a is it just gonna be
a one off with John Cena, or is he gonna
(23:24):
be like a part of w W programming. I mean,
I guess we'll find out eventually. It would seem to
indicate that we will see Sena versus Lessner, probably at
Clash in Paris coming up at the end of the month.
But again it's I don't know. It's not not a
(23:50):
good look in my opinion, and there seems to be
uh there there is shall we say, are relaxing of
cancelation or whatever. There was a post somebody and I
(24:14):
forget who shared it. There's a there's an independent wrestling
promotion in I think Portland, Oregon that has booked Joey
Ryan for an event and they're publicizing it now. In
case you have forgotten, Joey Ryan was caught up in
(24:34):
the Me Too movement and he has admitted that he
had a problem. I won't go as far as saying
it's a sex edition addict, sex addiction, but he had
a problem. But apparently now he's being promoted for a
(25:00):
promotion in fact, well, okay, hold on one second, I
just saw the update, so he was he was set
up for a it was August twenty third at Portland Wrestling,
but posted I guess just an hour ago quote I
(25:25):
guess this would be the promoter for Portland Wrestling. Quote,
I have canceled Joey Ryan's flight. He will not be
appearing at the August twenty third show. So yeah, so
apparently he is not going to be there after all,
(25:53):
which you know, that's that's that he is. You know,
I'm sure they probably caught a lot of flack. A
lot of people are canceling, so you know. Anyway, so
there's that. But yeah, brock Lesner back in WWE for
(26:17):
how long we will see. I'm gonna take a quick
time out. When I come back, I'll recap the rest
of SummerSlam. That's next. On Sports Guys Talking Wrestling.
Speaker 1 (26:40):
This is WW Superstar Seth Freaking Rollins and you're listening
to Sports Guys Talking Wrestling.
Speaker 2 (26:53):
Back here on Sports Guys Talking Wrestling, student Myracure, by
the way, Cuddy Roads and John c our set to
appear on SmackDown this Friday Night in Montreal. As they
say on Letter Kenny great fishings in Keyback. Uh. But yeah,
we will see Cody and John both on SmackDown Friday Night.
(27:16):
Let's go through the rest of summer Slam. Uh. Saturday
Night's man event Gunther see him Punk for the World
Heavyweight Championship. It was a fight. Seeing Punk made Gunther bleed.
(27:36):
We think could have been fake blood. Sure enough, Seeing
Punk hits the go to sleep on Gunther twice one, two, three,
See him Punk is the new World Heavyweight Championship or
World Heavyweight Champion. For just over five minutes, because then
(28:00):
the music you just heard to bring us back in
the segment it hits. Here comes Seth Rawlins with Paul
Hayman with that money in the bank briefcase. Now seth
Rawlins is on crutches, he's got a brace on his leg.
So it looked like at the beginning that Seth was
(28:26):
just there to remind him that he's got that money
in the bank briefcase and he could cash it in
at any time. So Seth and Paul are at the
top of the ramp seeing Punk still in the middle
of the ring. They mouthed off at each other, seth
turns around, takes a few steps back and then stops
(28:51):
and then drops the crutches and then turns back around,
takes the leg brace off and run runs down to
the ring with the briefcase all the way, grabbing Jessica
Carr hands the b hits Hits Punk with the briefcase
multiple times, then hands it to Jessica Carr. Cash is
(29:16):
in curb stomp won two three. Seth Rawlins is the
new World heavyweight Champion. So just like Seeing Punk what
Seeing Punk did to Drew McIntyre at WrestleMania thirty nine
(29:37):
or forty, costing him the world titles because Damian Priest
cashed in, that's Zach what seth Rawlins did. It's being
called the ruse of the century because his last one,
last time he cashed in, it was the heist of
the century. This is the ruse of the century. And look,
there was talk when he got injured at Satday Knight's
(29:59):
main event, the match with La Knight that you know,
so he looked like he had tweaked his knee. Well,
then the report started flying around that the injury may
be minor, if not a complete work. Well, looks like
we found out Saturday night he was not injured, so
(30:21):
he is the new World heavyweight Champion. They came out
he Paul Haymon, Bron Breaker, Bronson Reid to start Monday
Night Raw cuts a promo. They have all the power,
they're you know, do what they want and it is
part of the Vision. So apparently, and there was talk
(30:44):
that this the vision. Ww filed copyright for this, so
apparently that's what we are going to call this group.
The vision ended up that it was La Knight that
came out said hey, I beat you. You know I
hurt you. Saturday Night's main event didn't hurt you as
like I wanted to, So how about tonight I hurt
(31:06):
you and take that title. Seth refuses, but then here
comes Adam Pierce makes the match. Boom match is made.
Man if it happens, of course La Knight loses because
then you know you had Bron and Bronson interfere. Here
comes Seeing Punk, here comes Roman rains, but they all
(31:27):
get beat up Tsunami. Roman gets Tsunami like three times,
and Bronson stole his shoes again. He's being called the
tribal thief instead of the tribal chief. So I guess
we will see Seth Rawlins as the World Heavyweight Champion
for a while. I'm sure eventually we will see him
(31:52):
face off against seeing Punk. I don't know if Punk
wins that time, if it's soon, like say Clash at Paris,
it ain't you know, Rawlins is retaining because they're not
gonna They're not gonna take the bellt off of him
that quick or even let's see Clash Paris. Uh now,
(32:16):
Survivor Series M still seems a little quick, but it's possible.
We'll see. Uh, let's see what else the funny thing
is besides those two. So there were a total between
Saturday and Sunday a total of nine title matches, and
(32:43):
besides the two world titles, the only other title change
was Charlotte Flair and Alexiblis the Allies of Convenience defeating
Raquel Rodriguez and Roxanmperez from Judgment Day. So Charlotte and
Alexa are now the new w W Women's Tech Team Champions.
(33:04):
And there was there was an interview with Charlotte Flair
on I think it was Friday, may have been with
one of the radio stations and maybe, you know, maybe
WFA N or somebody in New York as they were
leading up to SummerSlam, and Charlotte was saying, how much
fun she's having and you can see it this tag
(33:30):
team that she's got with Alexa Bliss, She's having fun
and the fans are loving it. The fans are cheering
them all like crazy. I mean, it is a complete
turnaround from what we saw just a couple of months
ago with Charlotte. Charlotte couldn't get a cheer to save
her life, and now they are solidly behind her. Now
(33:57):
you know how ww does these they're will eventually be
some sort of falling out. In fact, it was during
the match on Saturday we saw what could have been
a falling out. Alexa Bliss goes to punch one of
the thing. It was Roxanne, Roxanne Ducks and she inavertently
(34:18):
hits Charlotte and so Alexibli You know, Charlotte tacked herself in.
Alexibliss has I think it was rox Sanne ready to
do the Ready do what's the uh? Citra Abigail and
(34:39):
Charlotte comes in, looks like she's gonna attack Alexa, but no,
instead hits the high kick on Raquel Bliss hits sister Abigail,
Charlotte covers she was the legal person in the ring.
Charlotte makes the cover one, two three, Charlotte Alexa new
tag Champs. So fun. It was fun. But that was it.
(35:02):
That's the only that was the three title changes. Every
other title match was you know, everybody retained. I mentioned
carrying Cross, Sammy's saying, Tiffany Stratt and Jake Cargill. It
was a good match. It was fine, a little surprising.
Drew back into Logan Paul defeating Randy Orton and Jelly Roll.
(35:25):
Jelly Roll did fine for who he is. I did
like it was so funny, and he did this. He
did this on SmackDown I think maybe in last week,
and then he did it again Saturday night. So Jelly
Roll comes out first, talks about how he loves tagging
with Randy, and then sings like the first couple of
bars of Randy's entrance music, and it sounded good. Well,
(35:51):
now there is a report out there that Jelly Roll
may cover voices in my head, which I think that'd
be fun. He sounded good. I liked it, but yeah,
it was fun. It was It was surprising that Jelly
Roll and Jelly Roll took the pin. I think it
(36:11):
was Logan Paul the pinned him. Jelly Roll took the pin.
Now you see you still say yeah, Blast he loved it,
so you know, but you know, okay, sure, I will
say uh the rest of the matches. Naomi retaining the
Women's world title in a great match with re Rip
and the EO Sky. So Naomi will now face Stephanie
(36:34):
Vakur for that title at Clash in Paris. Uh White
six retain the tag titles in a in a TLC
match with most of the machine Guns and Droughty, Ray Phoenix,
d I, Y Street, Profits and Nathan fraseran axiom by
the way, and they called this, they called attention to it.
(36:56):
Both the Dudley Boys Team three D, whoever you call it,
Bubba Rain and Devon Bully Rayin Devon and the Hardy Boys.
We're both ringside. They were both in the in the
front row. And course gave prop to them because the
first TLC match was twenty five years going to involved
those two teams as well as Edge now Adam Copeland
(37:20):
and Christian. Of course they didn't they didn't mention Adam
Copeland or Christian because of course there in eight a
W but it was cool to see them. And if
you if you're last week, Hardy's and Team three D
are going to face off one final time at Tena's
Bound for Glory coming up in October. So good stuff. Ah.
(37:41):
Let's see what else. Becky Lynch retaining the women's Inner
Continental title over lyrah Vakia. Bailey came out to try
to help. H tried to throw a punch at Becky.
Becky ducks hits Lyra. Becky hits through with a man
in the slam one two three. Now Lyra cannot challenge
(38:04):
for the Senior Continental title as long as Becky is
still champion, and of course now we will see Becky
or Bailey and Lyra go at it. Uh solascoa defense
retaining the US title against Jacob Pat two in the
in the steel Cage. He got the pin, but then
Jacob Ta two wreck shop is the rest of the NFTs.
(38:25):
Tala Tonga aka Hiceleo along with Tongaloa and J. C.
Mattayu aka Jeff Cobb get wrecked. Jacob Ta two hits
the moon Salt from the top of the cage. That
was pretty spectacular Dominans Mysterio retaining against AJ Styles. It
(38:47):
was a bit of a comedy match meets tribute to
Eddie Guerrero. In fact, AJ Styles winning wearing gear that
was fashioned from Eddie Guerrero's gear. I wonder if we
will see a match where AJ gets a serious shot
at it and wins it. We'll see. But yeah, so
(39:10):
all in all two nights. There is a report and
Andrew Badala, who does work for several outlets Sports Illustrated
some Mothers. He is reporting that WW and TKO are
strongly considering more to night premium live events. So they've
had two night WrestleManias the last couple of years. Now,
(39:32):
they've had two night SummerSlam, which by all metrics it
was very successful. So they're looking to do I think
likely it would be Survivor Series next year. So the
Survivor Series twenty twenty six as well as Royal Rumble
twenty twenty seven could likely become two night peels. They're
(39:55):
also looking at maybe even making money in the bank
a two night two nighter. I maybe, I guess I
can see it. I don't know that there's enough juice.
(40:16):
Maybe the because you've got those gimmick matches that take
a while. I could see where those become two nights.
I don't know. I'm more reserved judgment. So let's see
(40:37):
what else mentioned seth rawlins now the vision, So we
had Dragonly facing off against Dominic Mysterial Less not a Raw,
and then not one, not two, but three Il Grande
Americanos show up to cause havoc and cause Dragonly the match. Now,
(40:58):
I would the first thought would be, Okay, it's the
creeds under the masks. We know, we know the mask
that was over Jack Gable is now on Ludvig Kaiser.
I would think it's the crazy but I'm not for
sure because like one of them is not that tall,
so I don't know who's under the other two. But yes,
(41:20):
we now have three Elgrande Americanos mentioned you know, Naomi's
got the title match at Clash in Paris. Before that,
She's gonna defend against Eosky in a one on one
match next Monday Night on Raw, which will be in
Quebec City again Great Fishing in Quebec. Also, TMZ has
(41:42):
announced they are gonna air they have a documentary called
The Real Hulk Hogan. It will air next Tuesday, so
August the twelfth, APM Eastern, seven pm Central on Fox.
They interviewed several w W wrestlers. Apparently they also reviewed
Vince McMahon, So we will see what they have put together.
(42:07):
I will be I'll check it out. I'll see what
they got. So next Tuesday night, August twelfth, APM from
seventem central on Fox, The Real Hulk Hogan from TMZ
should be interesting viewing. I'm gonna take quick time out.
When I come back, I'll talk some ae W. That's
(42:28):
next on Sports Guys Talking Wrestling, Ladies and gentlemen.
Speaker 1 (42:51):
Just in case your depth don't blind stupid, or let's
just assume for this is m JF and you're listening
to the Sports.
Speaker 2 (42:56):
Guys Talking Wrestling. Welcome back to Sports Guys Talking Wrestling,
Stu Mike here. One other note about Summer Slam. It
did feel like the card was imbalanced between Saturday and
Sunday because it seemed like you had all the stipulation matches,
(43:17):
so like the Still Cage Match, the TLC match, the
Street Fight, they were all on Sunday, not on Saturday.
And on top of that, you had spots that were
repeated in several matches. For instance, so Beaky Lynch, Lyar Viakeria,
Baky Lynch ties Lyra hands up with a zip tie.
(43:42):
Well then you see Solaskoa handcuffed Jacob fi tw to
the cage at the top of the cage. Lots of
tables being used in several matches, and it just, I
don't know it it was kind of that that notion
of the law of diminishing returns, I think it would
(44:06):
it kind of started to feel a little flat. Not
to mention, Lyra and Becky were in an, you know,
unenviable spot coming after the TLC match. TLC match was
wild as you might expect. You had the inference from
(44:27):
the White Six, you had the inference from from Candice
Larray on behalf of the I Y B fab was
out there, you know. So it was yeah, it was
in that no win match, no wind spot though, Uh yeah,
I think I think Hunter and everybody needs to kind
(44:48):
of look at that a little more, you know, if,
especially for these two night paper views, they gotta think
they gotta balance it out a little more. So, Uh,
let's talk a little aw Let's first last week on Dynamite,
we had Hangman Adam Page defending the AW World Championship
against John Moxley. Everybody was banned from ringside, which didn't help.
(45:13):
We didn't hold because of course he had the death
writers eventually make their way and yet Hayman retains. It
was a fight for sure, but in the end Hangman retains,
so he is heading off towards his next challenger. Who
(45:36):
that will be, we don't know. Aw's next pay per
view will be Forbidden Door with New Japan Pro Wrestling
coming up on August twenty fourth at the Two in London.
As of right now, do not know who Hayman will
defend the title against. If he defends the tittle there,
I would think he's going to, but haven't heard anything,
(45:58):
so we'll see.
Speaker 1 (46:00):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (46:02):
Maxwell Jacob Friedman MJF is a champion once again. Now
it's not an AW title, it's a CMLL title. He
was at CMLL's event on Friday night. He defeated Averno
to capture the CMLLL World Light Heavyweight Championship. So MJF
(46:27):
a world champion again and old by the way, let's
not forget he still holds that contract. He won the
Casino Gauntlet match at all in Texas for a shot
at the AEW World title. Now, he says he wants
to beat Hangman Page. He wants to face Hangman and
beat him without exercising the contract, but Hangman says, no,
(46:52):
you're gonna if you if you want to shot this title,
you're gonna have to exercise the contract. We'll see how
that goes. But yeah, MJF and I think he's already
got a title of defense coming up in about a
week and a half. For two weeks, of course, he
and Mystico have been having you know, going back and forth,
(47:16):
you know, shouting out to each other and interfering each
other's matches. Miss MJF even interfered in Mesico's match at
Major League Wrestling. And let's not forget mjf'spent a good
chunk of his career with MLW. He showed up in
interfered Mesco's match there. So But yes, MJF a world
(47:39):
champion once again and looking to grab another one. We'll see.
AW has announced Full Gear their November pay per view.
It is set for Saturday, November twenty second, ironically, at
the Prudential Center in Newark, which just hoasted speck down
(48:00):
on Friday Night talk about taking advantage of the vibe.
So now we know aw's pay per view schedule for
the rest of twenty twenty five. I just mentioned Forbidden
Door aw New Japan Pro Wrestling that will be Sunday,
August twenty fourth at the O two in London, all
out except for Saturday, September twentieth at the Scotio Bank
(48:22):
Arena in Toronto. Wrestle Dream is Saturday October eighteenth at
the Schaefits Arena in Saint Louis. Just mentioned Full Gear
Saturday November twenty second at the Crudential Center in Newark,
and then World's in Saturday December twenty seventh at the
Now Arena in Chicago, Hoffman estates, but basically Chicago. So
(48:45):
we now know the rest of the rest of the
year's schedule for AW. So plan accordingly, make you way
to those locations or buy it on Prime Video or
pay per view or whatever. Speaking of Forbid and Door,
we now have two matches that are booked for August
twenty fourth in London. Speaking of casino Gauntlet contracts, the
(49:09):
Ring of Honor Women's World Champion, the Ring of the
Forever Ring of Honor, champion. Athena has exercised her Casino
Gauntlet contract. She will face timeless Tony Storm for the
AEW Women's World title at Forbidden Door. Kazuko Okata will
defend the AW Unified Championship, which he won in that
(49:32):
battle with Kenny Omega. He will defend that title against
Swerve Strickland. Of course, you know Don Kallas will be ringside.
You'll probably see some interference from the Don Kallis family.
But as of right now, two matches set for August
twenty fourth in London should be good ones. I don't
(49:55):
know if Athena wins the title, I don't no. On paper,
I would say now Tony's going to retain just because
that she's as hot as can be. She is arguably
the most most popular wrestler in AW men or woman.
(50:16):
I don't know, we'll see it could be interesting. Speaking
of Forbidden Door, there's also so they have booked Mercedes Monette,
who will be on Dynamite to morrow NIGHTE by the way,
eight Belts Monette, they have booked they're going to do
a four way match for the TBS title at Forbidden Door,
(50:43):
and the four individuals Mercedes Monet of course, the current champion,
someone from AW, someone from stardom In, someone from CMLL.
That someone from AW will be determined Tomorrow night on
Dynamite as a qualifier match will happen. It will be
(51:06):
Queen Amanada, Skyblue, Alex Windsor and Billy Starks battling out.
The winner will be in that foreway at Forbidden Door.
They will be the AW representative. That could be interesting.
I don't know who to pick. I would think maybe
(51:31):
Queen Amanada, but I don't know for sure. It should
be fun. Last week on Collision, Kyle Fletcher Dustin Rhodes,
the natural, our dear friend, our AW correspondent, had a
street fight at Collision last Thursday night, Chicago street fight.
(51:56):
It was brutal, it was bloody. There was a lot
of you know, apparent Kyle Fletcher. Don Kallas handed him
that stinking screwdriver and Kyle Fletcher stabbed Dustin in the
(52:17):
knee with the with the with the screwdriver. Ends up
paying him one two three. Kyle Fletcher is the new
TNT champion now. As for Dustin, so he sent this
tweet out. I believe it was on Sunday and I'll
(52:40):
quote it. Sorry, guys feel like I failed my fans.
Gonna be out for a while. As doc said, I
need a very invasive major surgery MRIs and cat skins
this week due to Kyle Fletcher. In any case, for
the time I was the face of TNT and was special.
For the time I was the face of TNT was
special to me. I will never take what I have
(53:01):
for granted. I'm in a terrible amount of pain and
have a hole in my leg. That won't stop me
from hashtag keep stepping that street fight. Obviously, you know
they wrecked him. There was the spot where Kyle had
Dustin's knee wrapped around the ring post, and then he
hits it with a chair, then of course the screwdriver,
(53:24):
and so now he's gonna need surgery. And then he
posted in fact it was just maybe in the last
let's see, it was in the last hour, I guess.
So last hour made two posts. First of all, quote
(53:45):
knees are both destroyed. I have to go under the
knife August twenty. First, they can't. They can't actually fix
the damage. So we are getting two knee replacements. Damn
Hashtag keep stepping. By the way, this is not the
end and then moments later is as hard as this
(54:06):
is and how much I hurt right now? Very nervous,
but excited to start from scratch and build back better.
Six million dollar man type shit. Been a hard recovery
this week and still suffering, but that match. But what
doesn't kill me makes me stronger. I promise to push
myself as hard as possible to make it back. I
(54:26):
still got lots to do, but in the meantime, just
want to say thank you to you all for checking
on me and giving me words of encouragement. Can't believe
me and my brother both had street fights within four
days of each other. Truly excited for whatever comes next
in aew loved here and damn five star match at
fifty six. Never let anybody tell you you can't do
(54:50):
or accomplish something. Never quit grateful, you will never keep
down our roads, keep stepping for life. That is kind
of ironic too, so Dustin and Cody both in street
fights on there on. You know one's defending the title,
(55:11):
ones going after a title. Look, I've known Dustin and
I mentioned this after all in winning that title it
meant it meant a lot to him, It really did,
and it's not This isn't just you know, wrestler acting emotional.
(55:34):
This was it. It really meant a lot, and he
does love being in AEW. Tony Kahan has talked endlessly
about how how much Dustin was his favorite wrestler back
in the day and and in fact so at on
the on the match on Collision. He didn't come out
to his aw music came out and I know this
(55:57):
because I gave him the music. He came out to
his old WCW nack, you know they call him the natural.
Came out to that music, which was really cool. But
it meant a lot to him. It meant a lot
to him to defend that title being the face of
(56:20):
TNT after being on you know, on w CW way
way way back in the day. And I know he
will work, really will. He will work endlessly to come back.
He wants to come back. He's still I want to see.
(56:40):
He's got at least a couple more years left on
his deal with AEW and he wants to come back.
And let's not forget he is still one half of
the Ring of Honor World Tag Team Champions with Sammy Guvara.
He is still one third of the Ring of honor
world six man tag team Champions with Ross and Marshall
Van Erk. Now what happens to those, I don't know.
(57:05):
It will be interesting because now as far as the
six man titles, I could see a scenario where Sammy
subs in for Dustin because they are the sons of Texas.
As far as the tag titles, I don't know. I
(57:26):
don't know what to what to make of that. I mean,
I guess we will find out. But I know Dustin's
gonna work hard. He's gonna work hard to come back,
and look, I will never doubt him, never ever ever
doubt him. So you know, obviously, all the best, all
(57:49):
all of my love to Dustin, and I know he'll
come back. They now Rose Wrestling Association has an event
on August seventeenth. He'll be at the Art of a
Bullpen in Leander. That's a Sunday belltime, six pm Central.
I'm pretty sure Dustin will be there. He's the booker
(58:10):
after all. So if you haven't already gotten tickets for that,
I would get tickets if for no other reason than
to wish Dustin the best as he gets ready for
that knee surgery knee replacement surgery. I'm pretty sure he'll
be there. So anyway, Yeah, all the best of Dustin.
(58:34):
We love him. I love him. One other thing, Bandido,
they've got so Ring of Honor has Death before Designer
coming up on August twenty ninth. It will be at
the twenty three hundred Arena formerly known as the ECW
Arena in Philadelphia. We now know the main event Bandido
defending the Ring of Honor World Championship against Hetchezeroh from
(58:57):
the don Kallis family. That's gonna be fun, That'll be
that'll be a really good match. Two Loutrador's bowling out
for the richest prize in Ring of Honor Wrestling coming
up Friday, August twenty ninth in Philadelphia. So I'm gonna
take a quick time out. When I come back, I'll
(59:17):
let you know what's happening independent wrestling around the state
of Texas. Plus an update on New Japanparo Wrestling g
one Climax. Next on Sports Guys Talking Wrestling, This is
(59:40):
James J. Dillon, the leader of the original Four Horsemen
and the holder of two Hall of Fame rings. And
you're listening to the Sports Guys Talking Wrestling. Welcome back
to sports guys talking wrestling. Steve Myrick, here, you got
a couple of cards to tell you about in independent
(01:00:04):
wrestling here in the state of Texas. First Off Reality
Wrestling brings you Summer of Champions eleven Saturday at the
Walker Texas Lawyer Arena in Texas City, Bell time seven
pm Central. AJ Francis from TNA will be there. Jada
Parker from TNA will be there, will all day, Ryan
Davidson and Moore. That's Summer of Champions eleven this Saturday
(01:00:26):
in Texas City. And who runs the Metroplex Wrestling has
who runs the world. It is an all women's event
this Saturday at the MPX Arena in Bedford, Bell time
a pm Central. The Ring of Honor Women's World Champion
Athena will be there. Masha Slamovich from TNA will be there, Abadon,
Bert Bixon, and Moore. That is Metroplex Wrestling all women's
(01:00:49):
event this Saturday in Bedford. And that's to look at
independent wrestling around the state of Texas. Wherever you may be,
go out and support independent By the way, huge shoutout
congratulations Vert Vixen. I think she I know she is
the current roads Wrestling Association Women's Champion. I believe she's
(01:01:13):
the current new Texas Pro Wrestling Women's Champion. She was
in the Tri State area for WW tryouts. They did
some tryouts around SummerSlam and she was there and she
shared pictures. So congratulations her. I've I say it every time,
(01:01:34):
you know, when we talk about independent wrestling, I say
it every time. Go out and see these independent events
because you're gonna see folks that you will see on
television one day. It happens all the time, and I believe,
beyond a shadow of a doubt, Vert Vixen is going
(01:01:54):
to be one of those. We will see her on television,
whether it's WW or AEW or TNA, She's gonna be
on your TV screen wrestling. I'm telling you now, so
take advantage of it. Like you said, she's gonna be
at the Metroplexs Wrestling event this Saturday, She's gonna be
at the Road Wrestling Association event on August seventeenth. Take advantage,
(01:02:17):
go see her. She's fantastic. So uh Neidje Pampera Wrestling.
The g one climax starting to wind down. We are
in the final was it week? I think Week week
and a half, I believe. So the standings are as follows,
(01:02:39):
starting an A block. This is crazy. So you got
five wrestlers with eight points in five wrestlers with six points,
so nobody has nobody has a set you know has
a clear advantage right now. So right now, the five
(01:03:00):
wrestlers with eight points, Yoda, Suji, Yuya, Urimura, O Lake, Bolton, Oiwa,
and Evil, all five of them have eight points. The
five with six points in A block Hiroshi, Tanahashi, tai Chi,
Callum Newman, Sonata, and David Finley. So nothing's determined yet.
(01:03:25):
Then B block, it's a little more. There's a little more,
but it's still it's still up in the air. You
have three wrestlers a top with ten points, Zach Saber Jr.
Who is the current IWGP World Tavyweight Champion, Ren Narita
has ten points, and then Koneska Takeshta who also from
(01:03:46):
ae W with ten points. Then you have four wrestlers
with eight points Yoshi Hashi, Shota, Ubin Oh, Great Okon
and Drilla Maloney, so all of them have eight points,
and then El Fantasma and Shingo Takagi with six points.
Again gave kid had to withdraw dude knee injury, so
(01:04:08):
he has no points as of now. Now the remaining schedule,
so the next action for a block will be this Thursday,
and then this coming Sunday, This Thursday corkinghn Tokyo, Sunday
(01:04:29):
in Gunma, Gunma. B block will be this Friday in Kanagawa,
and then next Wednesday in She'suoka, She's Oka. There we
go so so and those are the final two. So
(01:04:49):
that will determine I think, and I'm reading this off
of wrestling observers will forgive me. It will be three
wrestlers from each block will advance to the knockout stage
this year, with the block winners receiving a bye to
the semifinals. So you'll have three wrestlers atop each block.
The leading man gets a bye, the other two will
(01:05:12):
face off against each other. So and the way they've
got it scheduled, so Thursday, August fourteenth at Corkinhall in Tokyo,
you'll have the second place in a block will face
third place in B block, and then second place in
B block will face third place in A block. And
(01:05:33):
then Saturday, August sixteenth at Ariaki Arena in Tokyo. The
winners of those two matches will face off against the
first place of each block and then Sunday, August seventeenth,
the tournament finals again at Ariaki Arena in Tokyo. So
there you go. And then and of course the winner
(01:05:56):
gets a shot at the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship at
Rustle Kingdom on January four, twenty twenty six. If Zach
Saber Junior wins and as I mentioned, he is tied
at ten points a top B block. If he wins,
he gets to choose who he will defend against. And
(01:06:18):
remember it may not happen at Wrestle Kingdom because I
think didn't they have like a then they decided to
do it like in October last year, so we'll see
rev Pro Revolution Pro Wrestling in the UK. They have
announced Global Wars UK. Remember that's a that was kind
of a Ring of Honor brand event that they did
(01:06:40):
all the time. Well, Rev Pro is going to do
Global Wars. It will be Friday, August twenty second at
Crystal Palace National Sports Center in Crystal Palace. They will
collaborate with New Japan Pro Wrestling CMLL and Ring of
Honor so that should be a big event and I'm
sure he will stream go you know, find rev pro
(01:07:01):
on social media, they'll have the links all there. But
that should be a fun event. That should be a
really cool event. I know Simon Miller wrestles for a
RevPro on occasion, so that should be fun. It'll be
interesting to see who goes over there from Ring of Honor.
So but yeah, check that out Friday, August twenty second
Global Awards UK from rev Pro. And then finally TNA.
(01:07:24):
They like their commentary team Tom Hannafan, Matthew ray Walt.
They also like their ring announcer Mackenzie Mitchell, so they've
extended their contracts. Carlo Silva, the president of TNA, announced
this did not mention by the length of the extension,
but they are extended. They do a fantastic job, you know,
and I've you know, I've been logging. I've talked to
(01:07:45):
Tom on a couple occasions. Besides being a stalwart fan
of Penn State, does a Penn State podcast too, So
if you're a Pence, if you're a Nitney Lion fan,
check that out. But yeah, Tom Rev, Tom Hannafan and
Matthew ray Walt will be the commentary team for TNA
for the foreseeable future. And Mackenzie Minchell also included in
(01:08:10):
that group, of course, her significant other being none other
than Vic Joseph from NXT. So very cool, very cool
to them, of course we'll hear them. They've got an
event coming up, of course, the big one, bout Fuliglory,
coming up in October up in Lowell, Massachusetts. That'll do
(01:08:32):
