Speaker 1 (00:00):
Petmofield providing a spectacular backdrop for MLS Cup twenty seventeen,
a rematch of the final a year ago, and Toronto
FC hoping for a much different outcome. There are four
players who start tonight for Toronto that didn't play last year.
Bono was on the bench, my Finger, Delgado and Vasquez
are the players starting their first MLS Cup. As for
(00:23):
the Seattle Sounders, they make one change from the side
that won in the conference final.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
Last time at Torres.
Speaker 1 (00:29):
Back from suspension and knew who drops out.
Speaker 3 (00:32):
Rematch, Revenge, redemption, hick your favorite R word because they
all apply right here.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
For TFC.
Speaker 3 (01:02):
Sports it is sports felt storytime. We are going back
to Championship Day, the Champagne Day. December ninth, twenty seventeen,
the second consecutive MLS Cup final to be hosted at
Bemo Field in Toronto, thirty thousand, five hundred and eighty
(01:23):
four on hand, a one degree day. It was much
colder the year before. It was a one degree day.
Still cold, of course, because Demo Field is always cold,
especially in the winter. But Toronto's chance to get redemption
against who else but the Seattle Sounders. I remember some
breathtaking stuff before this game. The tifo was unbelievably cool,
(01:48):
the atmosphere was unbelievable. Truly an amazing time to be
a fan of Toronto FC.
Speaker 4 (01:56):
This is one of my favorite Toronto days ever, from
like start to finish. The fact it was like an
unseasonably warm December afternoon. Choosing to start at four instead
of seven or eight like the previous year was a
great call. Being in the stadium wasn't like a frigid nightmare,
(02:20):
but even just like pregame. I went to this game
with our good friend Jacob Kramer, who at the time
lived very close to BEMO, so we sort of started
our day with the pre drink there and it was
just one of those like Toronto sports days, especially down
in that neighborhood, whereas I get to the liquor store
(02:41):
at like noon down by Liberty Village, everyone around you
was clearly sort of out at that time for the
same reason, like everyone was getting their drinks to pregame
before this game, whether they were going or going to
a bar. There was just such a vibe in that
(03:03):
neighborhood at the time, which is usually not I neghbor
got enjoy very much but it was it was just
such a cool day, and like you you felt it
as well. I think in twenty nineteen with the Raptors
you felt in twenty fifteen with the J's you felt
it occasionally before games leaves have blown, but like it
was just one of those fun, nice days that you
(03:28):
and you could just like kind of feel it from
the start of the day. You knew the game itself
was tense, but you could just kind of feel it
that like it was gonna end well.
Speaker 3 (03:40):
We had spoken previously on this series about the determination
and the business like mentality that the team had the
entire year, and I would agree that I think that
was reflected in the fans this day because everybody I
talked to. I remember I met my friend Cal who
was a Day one Red Patch Boys guy. I texted
(04:00):
the morning like, they're going to win two nothing today,
I think is what I put into I was very confident,
and they were playing with such confidence, and they had
solved defensive issues and there really was that like just
calmly and confidently going into the stadium, whereas I think
the year before you would put it better last month,
where you were just like they went to that sort
of thing like I hope we win this game. It
would be amazing if we won, where this was very
(04:22):
much like don't know IFC is going to win this
game because they are a better team and they are
prepared and they are completely ready for what it takes
to do this.
Speaker 4 (04:32):
Yeah, And I think that's sort of carried over into
the vibe in the stadium as well. Like again, I
think the warmer weather helped this, to be perfectly honest,
because it was just it was like the building was
loud in twenty sixteen, don't get me wrong, and like
the crowd was excellent, but there was just such a
swagger to your like to your point to both the
team and the fans, and like we talked about it
(04:53):
last week with the decibel levels that the building hit
in those midsummer Montreal games, and it was just like
every game and every crowd in this season just kind
of felt it had that like that's so what fuck
you thing to it. It was very much just like
this is it's ours to lose, and we all know
it and we know we're better and it was just
(05:15):
like it was just a really cool environment to be.
Speaker 2 (05:18):
In for Toronto C.
Speaker 3 (05:20):
Working from the back Alex Bono in net, Beta, Shore, More,
Mavinga and Moro the back four, Bradley holding in mid,
Osario and Delgado in the midfield, Basquez behind the twins
up front, Javinko and Alta. Or to start for Seattle
Stephen fry who is excellent, by the way in this game, Lear,
(05:41):
dem Torres, Marshall, Jones, then in the midfield, Roldan and
Spenson holding with Ludero, Dempsey and Rodriguez in front of them,
and Will Bruin the loan center forward. Toronto really does
control this game. We talked last month, of course, about
the loss in Seattle and about how it was sort
(06:03):
of a slow pace that was only really one great chance.
There was the huge save on the Josie header that
was unbelievable late, and that was sort of it in
terms of solid real chances. That was not the case
in this one. Stephen Frye made six saves in the
first half of this game, that Donald basically has the
ball the whole time, tons of attacking runs, really really
(06:25):
really more in control than they were the year before.
But it was fry who was really really the reason
that Seattle didn't get blown out.
Speaker 1 (06:33):
Honestly fast gets across to the fast sight to take it.
Myvinger forward from the back droom or in there as well.
My finger gets contact to it more of the back
post sticks over the bar drumore finding the space there.
Speaker 5 (06:44):
But he couldn't keep the head of that big chance
for Truemon at the bike post. That was perfect, But
this one's oh. The finger gets a lovely flick going
to the bike post.
Speaker 2 (06:54):
To the hals. This one off John, I'm sorry.
Speaker 1 (06:56):
A wonderful say from Fry getting low down to.
Speaker 2 (06:59):
His right to the night Canadian.
Speaker 5 (07:02):
A really good straight from Jonathan and his audio again
U ball four of this Broadley, let's stay lovely ball and.
Speaker 1 (07:06):
From TFC's perspective it was a good thing. Michael Bradley
was there alert to the danger watching it. Ball that
is Trampasquez, javen cooing alone. It's Java Cao right.
Speaker 5 (07:18):
And again the ball through. No should it quit and
taind it up? But I guess the Javinko one v
one looking down the eyes.
Speaker 2 (07:24):
Of step from Fry altad All.
Speaker 1 (07:26):
A lovely turn from Altadoor into the feets of Sebastian Javinko.
Speaker 2 (07:30):
It's Javeko it's see one hand it saved by Fry.
Speaker 4 (07:34):
Yes, and here's the one part of the game that
felt not as fun. He makes two great stops on
Seba in like the first twenty five minutes, and it
was like and like there was all the uh, you know,
the confidence and places buzzing, and Fry just keeps making
saved after saving is.
Speaker 2 (07:55):
Altador space to the right.
Speaker 1 (07:56):
Here Delgado might have a crack at god a safe by.
Speaker 5 (08:00):
He's Stephen Fry, Josie arfterdoor just dropping deep getting it
to del Gatto.
Speaker 2 (08:05):
Space was here positive took the show that gets with
a bit of space.
Speaker 1 (08:09):
Here it's Victor Vasquez from distance, Fried as well once
again another stop from Stephen Fry to keep out TFC.
Speaker 5 (08:17):
Really good saved from Stephood Frying down to that right hand,
saying yet again.
Speaker 2 (08:21):
This is Javinko and they'll love me.
Speaker 1 (08:22):
Ball through it for justin Morrow. He's got out door
on the edge of the box. Comes over with to
Stephen beatis Shore over the bar from a man who
has never scored for Toronto FC, so on his weaker
left food.
Speaker 5 (08:33):
Great play monroing behind again. Not often you see that
so often against the Sounders. The fans getting in behind.
Speaker 1 (08:40):
Jones charged down by Delgado. Torres headed away all the
way out towards.
Speaker 2 (08:44):
Michael Bradley, hurried by.
Speaker 1 (08:46):
Fry, and Torris just did enough to make sure Altador
couldn't get there.
Speaker 5 (08:51):
Tremendous straight from Michael Bradley.
Speaker 2 (08:54):
Makes you sure in for Jose ad Alta or for Javinko,
it's Jeffrey cole Fry with another say maybe it's best
to the game to the night Sebastian Jivin.
Speaker 4 (09:03):
It's tempered a bit by the fact that like Seattle
has like one shot I think in the first half,
maybe two.
Speaker 3 (09:10):
Yes, I'll say it, Jovin Jones, who is on for
their captain. He takes a shot thirty minutes into this
game and it ends a one and fifty minute streak
without a shot on goal across the two MLS Cup
finals for Seattle.
Speaker 4 (09:23):
Right, so they get one shot on goal in the half,
Fry standing on his head. There's a couple counters from
Seattle that go nowhere, but they don't score, and so
halftime at Beimo had this weight to it. And I've
(09:45):
only experienced it before once in a sporting event, which
is if you've ever been to a Raptors playoff game
where they're on one of those like the other team's
on a run and you're just like, oh, I remember
at the beginning of the I'll never forget. It's the
being of the fourth quarter in Game one against Washington
in twenty fifteen, which they'd end up losing in overtime.
(10:07):
It's the grievous Vasquez shot gain, but they were down
like fourteen at the start of the fourth. I remember
being in the bathroom and acc has these like little
TVs in the bathroom. You can see what's going on
while you're in the bathroom. It's just this feeling of
like it's not over, but like there's a dread and
this is a little different. It's similar to what you
get in between innings in a big baseball game. And
(10:31):
there was this feeling and bemo of like it's happening again.
Because the Toronto Sea were by far the better team,
dominating on all sides of the ball, but it had
this feeling of like and no one was saying this,
but I remember thinking this of like, this feels a
lot like last year. This is we are so much better,
(10:55):
but Fry is amazing and we just can't get at
it past him and is this going to go the
distance of penalties again?
Speaker 3 (11:14):
Coming out of the second half, Toronto continues to pour
it on big saves on shots from Bradley and Giovinco
just after the hour mark, but they finally break through
in the sixty seventh minute. It's a string of passes
that lead to Josie Altador on the counter attack.
Speaker 1 (11:33):
His Victabasquez Jivenco Altador is on the side.
Speaker 2 (11:37):
Here Josey Altada through on goal.
Speaker 1 (11:40):
It's Josie Altada and the JN hawk has broken.
Speaker 2 (11:44):
Hi, Josey Altada.
Speaker 1 (11:47):
Come on why mark In the second half, Josey Alton
sets Babo fail of the lights Outa's biggest nights.
Speaker 5 (12:00):
So that our relief and eruption in the stadium is
there for everybody to hear. Water from TFC transition. Ladero
goes up one side TFC with him too, Ferry Cliff
Posse's out doors through and gold great ball from Motro
telefrit from Fasquez to thank cool with afficion the way
of buss the free Josey out to do and as
(12:22):
Frey came out as he's looked unstoppable tonight. He could
install this one from outa door water finish from the.
Speaker 2 (12:29):
US and to Nation.
Speaker 4 (12:29):
So that and the Edwin wild Guard home runner the
two craziest live things I've ever seen.
Speaker 2 (12:36):
In terms of where are you?
Speaker 3 (12:37):
Where were you sitting for this?
Speaker 4 (12:38):
We were sitting, which I guess there would be the
I don't know whichever end the supporters section is. I
would hear what direction is. I guess that's the north end,
kind of two sections towards midfield from the supporters end.
So decide that the goal went in on and it
(12:59):
was just pandemonium everywhere, just like those great like sport
crowd moments where everyone's just hugging everyone and everyone's screaming,
and it was just I think because of everything I
was saying before, of this fear of it happening again,
it was like just you could feel building exhale. I
(13:20):
don't need to keep relating it to other sporting events
of into, but do you remember how the built how
Skydom felt when Martin hit the home run against the Yankees, yea,
and that game where it was like one nothing and
then he hit the three run home run. It was
that kind of thing of just like there, it.
Speaker 3 (13:35):
Is beautiful beautiful comparison. I think that's that's absolutely perfect.
Seattle makes some subs and then they start to get
a little bit crazy. In the eighty third minute, a
wire holding a camera falls on the pitch.
Speaker 4 (13:49):
I have no memory of this. I believe it. I
have no memory of this at all.
Speaker 3 (13:54):
Tona makes a couple of subs. They bring on Armando
Cooper for Osario, and they take off Alta do Or
to bring on Nick Haguin extra defense. Seattle tries to
score the couple of shots that that Vono says, but
they can't stop the counter. In the ninetieth Geo looks
for a penalty, doesn't get one. Maybe they would. It
(14:17):
comes down.
Speaker 1 (14:18):
To Fast Guess chase smoke coming from behind the goal.
Is there a chance for TFC to make search And
in stoppish time it's Sebastiani inco It's through for Amandoka,
Armando Kooper off the post. I'm knocked in by Fast
Gas Toronto FCA, Well win have a last cup for
(14:40):
the first time.
Speaker 3 (14:43):
Boy, I mean boil boy.
Speaker 4 (14:46):
That was yeah, that was just that. It's the it
was like it felt like an empty net book.
Speaker 1 (14:52):
Fast Guests makes short deep into stoppish shine and the
celebrations can begin.
Speaker 2 (15:00):
Even read celebrate winning the twenty seventeen MLS Cup.
Speaker 5 (15:04):
Great play from Javitko Amandel the substitute, that's terrifically well, really, I'm.
Speaker 2 (15:09):
Forced to the post.
Speaker 5 (15:11):
Victa Vasquez sober fitsy. He's there, follows up the play
bundles enter. Then he won't get how that goal goes
in TFC MLS Cup.
Speaker 4 (15:23):
Champions Basquez I think got a yellow guard for taking
off his jersey and like pimping it at the supporters,
which was a great moment. Yeah, it was just like that,
Like I remember the Josie goal very well from being
in the building. That one's kind of a blur, yeah,
just because that was just like like the celebration had
(15:48):
kind of already started because it was the ninety fourth
and they were so dominant, Like after Josie scored, there
was not really that much like nail biting, I would say,
but then like Vasquez puts it away and it was
just like it was like mid celebration because that's like
once you hit stoppage time, everyone's jumping, everyone's singing, everyone's yelling,
(16:13):
and then he puts it away and it just continued
that and it was just like it was just pure
like sports joy. It was great. It was if you
can ever make it to the final of anything where
your team wins, I highly recommend it because it's a
lot of fun.
Speaker 3 (16:28):
We're supposed to go to the World Series Games, Drake, you
I know, I think about it all the time. That's
obviously the end, and there's there's no more time after that. Unbelievable.
The place goes nuts. Toronto FC, interestingly the first team
to win the MLS Cup and win the domestic treble.
They win the Canadian Championship and the Supporters Shield. That's
pretty cool. They win the playoffs the regular season and
(16:50):
they win the Canadian Championship. Obviously, you know, and I
don't know what the team would win the Candian Championship
and the MLS Cup. But they don't even need This
is the funny thing. They don't even need the uh
the cop capt champions League birth they were supposed to
get because they had already get they had already earned
it through the Canadian Championship. But boy oh boy, Toronto
(17:10):
also qualifies to play and host the Internet inaugural Campiones Cup.
Winner of the MLS Cup faces the Mexican campion, the
campions they play against Tigress for that unreal really a
great moment and the perfect culmination I think of that
Toronto we FC fan journey, I think it. I think
it really does sort of you have all the main players, right,
(17:31):
you have Javinko does so much work to get you
there and is so important throughout the game, and Josie
is the one who gets the goal and makes the
huge play and proves to be unstoppable and lives up
to his entire career of promise. And then, as we
mentioned in the first one of this this episode, it's
fitting that Vasquez is the one to seal it. And
(17:54):
feel like Vasquez is the difference that in the year
the team before Vasquez was like, we have this guy
that is right there with our two big guys that
really is the complete package that we needed and real
poetry that he's the one who puts it home.
Speaker 4 (18:10):
Yeah, and that was sort of I don't know if
this is true, but it felt like that was sort
of the conversation about it, just like yeah, hell yeah, awesome.
Speaker 3 (18:21):
And then listen, this isn't even the end for this
for this team. They would go on an incredible Champions
League run. They play some of the best teams across
North America, they have some incredible games. They make it
all the way to the CONKCAFF Champions League Final that
goes down to a shootout, and we will talk about
it and the future of the franchise next week on
(18:43):
sports Felt Storytime.
Speaker 2 (19:29):
What's the
