Speaker 1 (00:01):
We'll be looking at a new spy story with Kim Philby.
We're going to be looking a little bit more at
Kim Philby in depth. There's a lot of unfortunately situations
where he betrayed the British government and we'll look to
see at some of his cases in the world of spy.
So this one's Compromising five and MI six. We mentioned

(00:24):
before he was a central figure in the Cambridge five
spy ring. Inflicted severe damage on Britain's six and their
Security Service five by passing critical intelligence to the Soviet Union.
In the nineteen thirties, he recruited Soviet handlers. Philby infiltrated
six and nineteen forty, leveraging his positions to undermine Western
intelligence operations. One of the most damaging betrayals occurred in

(00:48):
the late forties and early fifties when he compromised six
Operation Valuable, a joint six CIA effort to destabilize Communist Albania.
As six is liaison in Washington in d C from
nineteen forty nine to nineteen fifty one, Philby had access
to operational plans, including agent insertion points and schedules. He

(01:12):
relayed these details to his Soviet handlers, enabling the KGB
to intercept nearly one hundred operatives sent into Albania between
nineteen forty nine and nineteen fifty one. Most were captured
and executed, crippling six IS covert operations in the region
and exposing strategies to Moscow. The betrayal also wrote a
trust with the CIA. As mik's MI six's failure was

(01:35):
partly attributed to internal leaks, Philby's actions directly undermine m
I five, and nineteen fifty one, he alerted fellow Cambridge
spies Guy Burgess and Donald McClain, both linked MI five
and six of their impending exposure of Soviet agents. MI
five had been closing in on mcclaim through the Cryptid
Soviet Communications Venona project, but Philby's warning enabled their defection

(01:57):
to Moscow. This incident not only embarrassed five, but also
cast suspicion on Philby himself, though he evaded prosecution until
nineteen sixty three. The defection exposed vulnerabilities in MI five's
counterintelligence methods, prompting internal reviews and heightened security of personnel.
Philby's access to MI six's syngent signals intelligence sharing with

(02:19):
the US further amplified his impact by passing NATO and
MI six plans to Moscow. He compromised both five six
operations targeting Soviet activities in Europe, including efforts to infiltrate
Communist cells in Greece and Turkey. These lead These leaks
led to the deathsout of dozens of agents and disrupted
MI six regional influence. When Philby defected the Moscow he

(02:42):
would continued to provide intelligence, revealing more operational protocols, further
weakening Western counter intelligence, and he is believed to be
responsible for over three hundred agent deaths. So tragic, definitely tragic.
That's it for now.
