Speaker 1 (00:01):
Today we're going to be looking at a spy slash
ghost story. During World War Two, Asia's battlegrounds birth countless
covert operations, but a few spy stories rivaled the mystery
of Agent Phantom, a shattery figure linked to Station M,
a secretive British intelligence outposts and Japanese occupied Malaya operating

from nineteen forty two to nineteen forty five. Station M,
hidden in the jungles near Kuala Lumpur, coordinated resistance against
Japanese forces, relying on a network of Malay, Chinese, and
British agents. Phantom, whose true identity remains unconfirmed, was reputedly
a double agent of Chinese descent. Infiltrating Japanese High Command

declassified M six files hint at Phantom's exploits, in nineteen
forty three, they allegedly smuggled blueprints of Japanese coastal defenses
in Singapore to Station M. Posing as a merchant, Phantom
exploited their fluency in Japanese and Mandarin to attend Chemipitai
meetings relating troop movements to guerrilla fighters. Yet their duplicity

(01:05):
came at a cost. In nineteen forty four, coded message
intercepted and partially decoded, suggested Phantom was betrayed by a
mole within Station M, leading to their capture. Tortured by
the Kempetai reportedly yielded no secrets, and Phantom vanished, presumed executed,
but the mystery deep in post war. In nineteen forty six,

(01:27):
a British operative claimed to have seen Phantom in Hong Kong,
alive and working as a smuggler, sparking theories they faked
their death or a triple agent for China's Nascance Comuno
communist forces. Some speculate Phantom was Limbo, saying a revered
Chinese resistance leader, but his documented death of nineteen forty
four contradicts the story. Others point to a woman, citing

(01:49):
in nineteen forty three report of a female spy name
code Lotus, though no records confirmed the link. In nineteen eighty, though,
a Malacca fisherman on earthed at ten box containing Station
M cipher's and a photo of an unidentified person in
a merchant's robe. Historians like doctor Tan Yee Lynn argue
Phantom was likely a composite of multiple agents. They're legend

amplified by wartime propaganda. Yet oral histories among Malayan resistance
fighters insist Phantom was real, a ghost who outwitted empires.
This elusive spy tale blends courage, betrayal, ambiguity and the mystery.
