(00:00):
Good morning, Laguna Beach. Welcomethe Stairway to Heaven. My named Don
Shortino, pastor of Laguna Beach Networks. And each week we look at a
song lyric or two recognize these linesof heart cries or prayers that are common
to humanity. They would I callthemes of the heart concerning our journey here
on Earth. Life's a journey thatinvites and demands us to find answers beyond
(00:23):
ourselves, giving us the love andhelp we need to live and love as
God intended. My desire is togive us some help and hope, connecting
our heart cries with Heaven. Today, I want to continue our series called
People Helped the People, People Helpthe people you know? Today I want
to talk about being part of acommunity with a cause to help others.
(00:46):
You know. The best definition Ifound for community is a connected and shared
life. Connected and shared life, and I believe this is God's intention for
us, for all of us.I believe he wants to connect with us
and resources with his love and sharehis life with us so that we can
do the same here on earth.I believe this is God's best for us
(01:10):
and how he made us to operate. I believe it's His intention for us.
So when we are connected to loveand share that love, we're functioning
as God intended. Being loved wellenables us to love others well, and
this love grows us to love otherswho are outside of our comfort zone.
I want to say this again. This love grows us, It moves us,
(01:36):
it compels us, gives us compassionto love others who are outside of
our comfort zones as well as ourexisting relational circles. Being part of a
community that cares helps us to dowhat we might not do on our own.
I've seen this again and again aspeople have found us and our reputation
(01:57):
to serve the poor and needy inthe city, Homeless and single moms and
those struggling with mental illness and addictionstheir families. That people come and find
us and then they say can canwe serve with you? And when they
serve with us and they bring theirfamilies, it just enriches their lives and
they're very grateful that we've provided anopportunity for people to serve the poor and
(02:23):
needy. And so there's so manybeautiful churches and nonprofits in town that are
doing this and encourage you to beabout one of them, so that you
could again love beyond yourself, lovebeyond your immediate relational circles. See the
power of love brings change wherever it'sreleased, and so it's important that we're
(02:49):
about love. We're about receiving love, giving love, and letting that love
take us into new territories of lifethat our heart would grow and expand,
and recognizing we are rich in somany ways, and we have so much
to give to people or time orenergy. It's not all about money.
(03:10):
It's it's about friendship. It's aboutspending significant time with another person that's pretty
invisible, maybe in this moment theseason of their lives. But when you
give of yourself whatever way that's appropriateand that you can do that, you
make the invisible people visible. Andso let's listen to a song called people
(03:35):
Loving People. It's by Garth Brooks, and some of this lyrics are pretty
amazing. Words aren't what they seemto be. Talk is cheap, but
lies are free. We fear whatwe don't understand. We've been scared since
time began. All the colors andthe cultures circle around us on a spindle.
(03:58):
It's a complicated riddle. This solutionis so simple. It's people loving
people. That's the enemy of everythingthat's evil. In that beautiful it's people
loving people that's the enemy. Loveis the enemy of everything that's evil.
Enjoy this song, Adin, It'llset the stage for the rest of our
talk. Doctor, you ain't gota film for whatever's making this world.
(04:32):
You can't give or give inside thestorm and peace, it's a politicians.
You won't find a resolution in thebottom of a bottle, and the star's
a very startle. You only answerto the problem is pevil loving people.
(04:57):
That's every then it's evil. Ain'tno quick fence at the in loving Needa.
It's just evil, loveing people.Whoa whoa whoa? Words are what
(05:20):
they seem to me, And talkis cheaper lies we fear when we don't
understand, and even scarce since timeagain all the colors and the colors around
(05:41):
a some spirit. It's a complicated. The solution is so civil, a
sivil loving people. That's the endof me of everything that's evil. Ain't
a quick fence at the in lovingdeeda. It's just keepa love feble who
(06:05):
who who get haunt it off fromkings and queens and those behind the curtain,
say what can make the difference ina world so full of hurting?
But I believe the remedy starts rightgame with you and the fevo loving feeble.
(06:30):
That's the endemy of everything that's evil. Ain't a quick fits at the
end of the meal. It's thisdeepa love, deepa It's just keeppa love
deevil whoa who. It's just people, people. That's such a great song.
(07:12):
People loving people. That's the enemyof everything that's evil. So I
want to talk about being part ofa community that will bring change. You
know, we all see the needfor change everywhere we go, particularly among
our homeless population. Here in Laguna. We see people struggle with mental illness,
We see poor and needy. Moreand more people, uh, we
(07:36):
find that are living in not onlyon the streets in their cars, moms
with their kids. You know, this is hard times and there's people that
are struggling, especially posh COVID.A lot of anxiety going on, a
lot of paranoia, a lot offear. You know, we all have
opinions of how we can change things. And I've learned that the poor can
(08:00):
be seen in two ways that theyNumber one, day are a problem,
and number two, there are peoplewho have problems. And if we look
at the poor and needy all aroundus as as just they are the problem,
then we want to dismiss them,We want to rid ourselves of them,
we want to move them out.I remember one time we had Won't
(08:24):
You Be My Neighbor barbecue and theintention was before the COVID when there was
a lot of homeless in our city. The intention was that the homeless our
neighbors and we need to get toknow them, and whether we like it
or not, there are neighbors aswell as that the homeless need to know
(08:45):
and respect the rest of the membersof our city. We had over two
hundred and fifty people that came andmuch of the city participated and served with
us. The radio station and musiciansand the police were there, and some
of the city council was there. It was a very special event. But
(09:07):
the week prior as this was putin Studs News and they did an article
on us. A week prior,a man calls me up and he says,
you know, Laguna Niguel has agood park and why don't you have
your event there? And he saidthis to me, says, why don't
you get these people on a busand ship them out of here? See
(09:28):
that's that's what he saw. Thepeople were the problem, rid the city
of the problem. But there's nocompassion and that. I know, people
who have problems create problems. Yes, but we have to get to the
heart of the matter, and thatis to get to know these people,
recognize their problems, and be ableto serve people properly. There's so many
(09:52):
agencies and government and ways to helppeople, and the bottom line is they
need a helping hand to get tosome of these agencies to find the right
help. Firstly, friendship, beinga neighbor is important. So it's easy
to have opinions and even plans forthe poor and needy around us without relationship
(10:13):
with them. You know, it'sso easy to just do it through an
agency or make a phone call. But get to know some people and then
watch and see how you become ahelping hand to these people. See,
sharing our lives to help another isan expression of love that will bring change
not only to the people who willhave problems, but it will bring change
(10:35):
to your heart. The first changeoccurs in us who reach out to the
poor and needy. We press throughour fears and we connect with a person
one who has a story that hasbrought them to this time and place in
their lives. We do a beachclean up with the homeless every other Saturday.
(10:56):
And there was a new man thatcame with one of the homeless that
have been in their city for along time. And I watched the dynamic.
He spent time with him for monthsand months, and he was now
inviting this man to come and doa beach clean up with us. And
as the homeless man had a senseof friendship and confidence that I've never seen
(11:22):
in this person before. I've knownhim for years. But this man told
me how this man, homeless man, has enriched his life and that he's
committed to being friend to him andhelp him appropriately. I watched the dynamics
of this and made my heart veryhappy. You know, get to know
people that are poor and needy. They have a story that has brought them
(11:46):
to this time and place in theirlives. You know one that needs some
helping hands to help them come intoa new season of life. That's our
model in our store, Treasures ofLaguna and Laguna exchange. We're helping people
come into a new season of life, and sooner or later we're all going
to need a helping hand. Weall become poor and needy. It might
(12:07):
look different for each one of us, but sooner or later we're going to
need a helping hand. And soit's good to be about helping others in
this season of our lives where wecan and then watch and see how it
reciprocates to us in different ways. And we see even our own being poor
and needy differently, especially as we'vehelped others. You know, community is
(12:31):
about people coming together who have commonvalues, common pursuits. And I'm grateful
for all the nonprofits and churches andconcerned people who have a heart for the
homeless friends and all others who strugglewith hard realities of life. You know,
together we can love and serve ourfriends and see lives change, not
(12:54):
only theirs but ours. I lovethe reality of collaboration. We collaborate different
churches and nonprofits and people, andwe can get more done together and making
new friends as well. It's suchan enriching reality. You know. Please
participate some of the endeavors in ourcity to help bring change. You know,
(13:18):
Jesus said, the poor you willalways have with us, you know.
And it's easy to get offended bythis, but it becomes an invitation
and an opportunity for us to growand be generous. You know. God
always knew that there would be poorand needy people, and He's entrusting you
(13:39):
and I to do something about it. You know, when He gave instruction
in the Old Testament to his people, and he said, when you harvest
the crowd, leave something for thepoor. Don't don't don't harvest at all,
leave something for the poor. Andand so God has always encouraged his
people to do something, to givethem something to eat, to help them.
(14:05):
And we've been talking about this inour series. You know, seeing
the poor and needy all around us, demands of response. I want to
say that again, seeing the poorand needy all around us, demands of
response. We have a choice todismiss them or to realize we have responsibility
to help them, and the choicesours. The hard cries of Heaven and
(14:28):
Earth are met when we respond inlove to serve another who is needy.
I want to say that again, the hard cries of heaven and Earth are
met when we respond in love toserve another who is needy. You know
my prayers that you would see andserve others that are all around you.
(14:48):
If you do, you'll be pleasantlysurprised by this act of love what it
does not only for them, butfor you. And so I want to
encourage you. You know, it'sso easy to be about our own kind
of world, in our own zoneand relate and love to those that that
we are like us and that welike to be with. But you know,
(15:11):
it grows us in. It's anice way when we're able to make
a new friend and uh and tobe able to hear their story and to
be able to share your story withthem maybe when you were in a hard
place to help you received what youdid. You know, friends helping friends
is really what we're about and what'sso important. And you know, we
(15:35):
are so grateful for all the agenciesin our city, but I love our
city that has such a personal connectednesswith with those that are struggling, and
so relationship is everything. It's soso important. So let's listen to our
series song by Birdie. It's calledpeople Help to People. God knows boy
(16:15):
is hiding in those weak and drunkenhearts. Gets he kissed the girls and
made them require those hard face queensa misadventure. God knows what is hiding
in those weak and sunken lights.Fiery throws of mutin langers, giving love
(16:40):
but getting nothing back. Peace hebo, help the peace, he bow,
And if you're homesick, give meyour hand and out holding peace he
bow, help the peace, heaple. Nothing will drag you. You don't.
(17:06):
And if I heard a break,and if I heard a brain,
I becall as a stone, reachas a fool to do those school to
(17:29):
go to those one hiding in thisworld, don't little coat when behind the
teas, inside the lights of thousandslow diving sunsets gone, those one is
hiding in those weak and drunken heartsand sloane in the scam knocking. No
(17:52):
one needs to be the nosing andpea he bo down the peapo and your
phones. Give me your hand enoughpeople, the peace people will try out
(18:18):
when in my hand to break. When in my hand, I because I

the key people. Nothing will chainme down. And if I had
to break, when if I hadto break, I'd be called I just
(19:48):

my prayer for you is that youwould be moved by love, that you
would recognize that you have something togive another person. Whether you believe that
(20:11):
or not, it's true. Andtake a risk to try to say hi
to someone that's maybe a little bitdifferent than you are, Maybe that seems
to be very different than you areat this time in their lives, but
they need some time and attention.Join an organization, a nonprofit of church
that's helping those that are poor andneedy, and what's your life being rich
(20:37):
by doing so? That's how wehelp one another in our city of Laguna
and beyond. And so my prayersthat you be moved by this great love
that you have and share it withanother. It was great to talk with
you today, and I want topersonally be available to offer friendship and help
