Speaker 1 (00:00):
You were listening to Star Wars splash Page comics and review.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
No, No, you're not, You're not not really, No, I'm kidding.
This is episode number four hundred and fifty three, Jeff
Good evening, sir, how are you.

Speaker 3 (00:13):
Dig me on the stage made? I'm hum gonna be
as bad found park On. I don't want sets running
the Gallo scenes.

Speaker 1 (00:35):
Well now I'm gonna use that. What what are we doing?

Speaker 2 (00:39):
I thought we were doing.

Speaker 1 (00:40):
I am as no, But I did watch the last
week again that movie. What I noticed last week is
that is a movie where every single decision in the
movie could be the wrong one in any other movie,
but because of the creative folks work on that film,

(01:01):
it all works.

Speaker 2 (01:02):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:03):
Yeah, every single decision in that movie could be ruinous,
but it all works and it's amazing, and I.

Speaker 2 (01:11):
Just I just like going back to watch it, you know,
for Chris Chris Tucker, Thank you Chris Tucker. And then
I always love the fact that they got Tricky to
be in the British.

Speaker 1 (01:21):
Rapper Well, and then there of course there's Gary Oldman,
who you forget is Gary Oldman?

Speaker 2 (01:25):
Who's Gary Oldman?

Speaker 1 (01:27):
Exactly?

Speaker 2 (01:28):
Everyone in the planet will wake up one day and
realize that it was they that they were Gary Oldman.

Speaker 1 (01:32):
Ye be Gary Oldman. So we do have two books
to discuss this week, both from Marvel. We have Jedi
Nights number four and we have Fear of the Jedi
number five five. Matt and I may have a difference
of opinion on each of these books. But Matt, before
we dive into that, what kind of news have we

(01:53):
got to discuss this week?

Speaker 4 (01:55):
Uh?

Speaker 2 (01:55):
Well, first and foremost, shout out to you for the
recommendation of Three Imaginary Droids by the Three three Pos.
What a great album, that.

Speaker 1 (02:04):
Is pretty sure. My my CDs that I ordered got
quote unquote delivered today by the post Office, but did
not actually get delivered. They were marked as delivered, but
I ain't got them.

Speaker 2 (02:13):
I what a surprise that happens a lot of office
I've known, especially of late. Thanks Louis to Joy. Uh.
Dark Horse on November eleventh is going to collect Star
Wars the Sequel Trilogy trade paperback. Uh, don't get too excited.
You have seen all these books before these were published
by Disney Publishing, you know, several years ago when the

(02:35):
sequel trilogy movies were coming out. However, we are getting
a brand new cover and uh that is by Eduardo
Francisco and it looks really good and you can see
it on the Facebook page. And the fact that we
get all three of these collected. Uh, Unfortunately it's a
trade paperback. It's not a hardcover, which is a bummer
because if memory serves, and I'm just too lazy to

(02:56):
go up to my attic to my to my matte
my matt Airy where I have all my Star Wars books. Uh,
because I'm pretty sure that the prequel trilogy and the
original trilogy or.

Speaker 1 (03:08):
Hard bats, of course they are.

Speaker 2 (03:12):
But I'm still gonna get this. So even though I've
got all three of these, you know, as separate books,
I'm still going to get them. So but so that's cool.
We've got some more of the variant covers for Jedi
Night's number five on the Facebook page and the and

(03:32):
and the Blue Sky feed. Uh, there's a great one
by Ivan Taw that features Count Dooku and he kind
of reminds me you will know this, and if you don't,
I'm not going to criticize you for it. But uh,
in Superman two, there was zod right Ursula ursa ursa

(03:53):
and then who was non None. Yeah, it kind of
looks like none, and I'm here for it, so total
here for it. So we've also got a couple of veryant,
you know, variant covers for Doctor Afra Chaos Agent number two.
Uh and then of course the other variant for Jedi
Night's number five features Yattle front and center. So uh

(04:15):
yeah and uh oh an unrelated to Star Wars Comics News,
but apparently, and it looks like in the oughts, the
CIA secretly ran a Star Wars fan site and they
used it to communicate with their operators.

Speaker 1 (04:29):
I heard about that.

Speaker 2 (04:31):
Yeah, it's on It's on our Facebook page, it's on
the Blue Sky. I linked to the story that the
four or four media did. I was like, wow, that
was unexpected.

Speaker 1 (04:38):
So I was like, okay, uh cool, that is amazing.

Speaker 2 (04:46):
Oh yeah, So and uh that's basically it for the news.
I'm I'm anticipating that we're gonna have some sort of
reveal for the upcoming Doctor Afra series on Star Wars
dot com. And I'm pretty sure something is up because
a lot of the Star Wars podcast influencers, of which
we are not one, uh you know, we're in San

(05:07):
Francisco the last couple of days taking photographs, so and
me doing meetups with each other, so that usually says
something is happening.

Speaker 1 (05:17):
So that we were never invited to well, we.

Speaker 2 (05:21):
Don't even we don't even get acknowledged, so so and
and and to the lone person who did actually message
us via Blue Sky who asked why we were not
at Star Wars celebration Japan, I would just like to
point out that we are Our record with trying to
get a comics oriented a panel or even slot on

(05:42):
the whole in Net News stage remained unflemished. So we
are now oh and five or oh and six. So
so that's why we weren't at Star Wars Celebration Japan.
Didn't we didn't, We didn't make the cut for the
Holo Nette News again.

Speaker 1 (06:00):
Well and again, as I always say, if I'm going
to go to Japan, I'm not going to spend five
days in a convention center.

Speaker 2 (06:07):
Ah, I'm not gonna tell you tried it. All right.

Speaker 1 (06:15):
That's it for the news, all right, So we'll take
a short break as our our host requires us too.
Then we'll be back to discuss Jedi Knights issue number four, yay.
And unlike last week and the week before and the
week before that, Matt I can now say Jedi Knights

(06:35):
number four in the ongoing monthly series from Marvel, I'm
no longer confused about it being a mini series. Uh.
Has a very striking cover and I believe this is uh,
this is one of Rozas cover. Yeah, this is great,
very painterly cover. Uh. Liam Neeson or Kui gon Jim

(06:58):
looks it just looks like Liam Neeson. I thought I
was like, get a photo of Liam Neeson. It's it's
not it's not Uncanny Valley. This is on the on
the order of of an Alex Ross esque cover, and
I'm here for it.

Speaker 2 (07:08):
It's it's it's it's really really cool, I think so. Uh.
And it looks like, uh, you know, we'll have a
you know, because Raza has done has done all the
covers with the exception of the second printing variant for
issue number one, which was an interior page by matter
Back Mussa Bakoff. Uh. And then he will be on
Jededight's number five. But it looks like the streak ends

(07:32):
with number six because matter Back Mussabakoff is going to
be doing the cover of the main cover at least
for Jedi Knight's number six.

Speaker 1 (07:39):
Awesome.

Speaker 2 (07:40):
Yeah, so it's been it's been a pleasure of seeing
Rozes covers. I really like Z's work a lot. So
then of course there are always going to be people
who are gonna it's too realistic. He's tracing, not tracing.
He's an artist, he's doing his job, but it's neither
here nor there. Uh. This is the Fedra Gambit, written

(08:02):
by Mark Guggenheim. Art is by Manabac Musabakoff. Colors are
by the excellent Luis Guerrero Hi Luis. Letters are by
Virtual Calligraphies Clayton Coles. As we said, Raza is the
main cover artist. We have variants. We have a Force
Awakens tenth Anniversary variant by Chris Sprouse, Carl Story and
Niraje Menon, Dan Jurgens and Brett Breeding and Laura Martin

(08:23):
have a variant. They are Pride variant is by Paulina Ganisho.
And then of course we have another one by Ramo
and Rosannas and Gurui Effects and a Lightsaber variant both
in trade and Virgin Dress by Tarren Clark. Carlo Slow
is our designer. Drew Baumgartner and Mikey J. Basso are
the assistant editors. Mark Paninzio with Danny Kazem are the editors. C. B.

(08:47):
Sebelski is editor in Cheap and from Lucasfilm, we have
senior editor Robert Simpson, Associate editor Grace Ars. Michael Siglane
is the creative director. Troy Elders is the art director.
Phil Shostak is the creative art manager, and from the
story group it's Pablo Hodelgo, Matt Martin and Emily Skukhani. So,

(09:07):
as always, Jedi Knights is set a timeline wise before
the events of the Phantom Menace, so you know it's
a time of peace and prosperity. Thousands of Jedi Knights
are spread across the galaxy. Everything's copesthetic, except for the
sith cancer growing underneath their noses because they're too prideful

(09:28):
and their hubris forbids them from actually acknowledging that they
may not be as smart as they think they are.
But despite all that, scoundrels, criminals, and bounty hunters still thrive,
and among them Phaedra, a mysterious young woman renowned for
her elaborate criminal schemes, and she seems familiar to you, Jeff,
that's because we saw Phaedra and the Mark Gugenheim pen

(09:51):
on solo with Chevaka mini series. So anyway, I was.

Speaker 1 (09:55):
Just thinking that. I'm sorry, I just thought I was
looking at it at Chi.

Speaker 2 (09:58):
Lobo, okay, or you don't even Domino. But Fader has
recently pulled off a daring robbery of the galactic Bank
of Coroussant, brazenly escaping with a fortune and Republic credits.
I'm sure the banking clan is not very keen on.
So we open up and we are on Mala Star
and we're right there with this great action shot. It's

(10:19):
very awesome, and there's Faeder criminal mastermind, and there's Jango
Fette bounty hunter last time, last morning, hand over the
money and like, no, I don't think I'm gonna do that,
but you're gonna leave and let me go on my way.
What do you Jedi? Now? Is that supposed to be
some kind of mind trick? No mind trick can offer
because I'm gonna pay you three times whatever job has

(10:40):
promised you. I just need teeny tiny favor.

Speaker 1 (10:44):
Okay, I'm gonna say this now we find out at
the very end what this teeny tiny favor is. I
love the twist of this story, I love how it
works out. But this book is called Jedi Knights and Matt.
When we get to the end of the book, I
would like for you to tell me how the Jedi
Knights affected this story.

Speaker 2 (11:03):
Okay, well please, And.

Speaker 1 (11:05):
I also have one other question. I also have one
other question.

Speaker 2 (11:08):
All right.

Speaker 1 (11:09):
So the next the very next scene, we have shot
Tia and Kwai got Jen meeting with a member of
the Intergalactic banking Clan who runs the galactic Bank of Corroussot,
and we find out that the account that was stolen
from is it belonged to Senator Becka, who Qui Gon
reminds us wholes not inconsiderable sway with the Galactic Senate.

(11:29):
How much was actually stolen? And we find out a
whopping ten thousand converted and certified IBC credits, which is
enough to ruin the bank. Now ten thousand credits doesn't
seem like a whole lot to me.

Speaker 2 (11:43):
Well, but here's the thing is, I've never really quite
figured out, you know, how currency works in Star Wars.
I mean, you know, it was what thirteen thousand credits
for Luke and obi Wan to get to alderon seventeen seventeen.
You know, then they could may he's sold the speeder
for what like what three or six thousand? So uh,

(12:04):
but if you notice this Mune who oddly enough has
a nose, so it seems kind of striking he know,
you know this, this this immune banker is saying ten
thousand converted and certified ib C credits. So perhaps the
exchange rate is you know something like you know, you know,
I an Internet an intergalactic banking clan credit is worth

(12:27):
like you know, a thousand Republic credits or something.

Speaker 1 (12:31):
So okay, possibly, but yeah, you're right.

Speaker 2 (12:34):
It would seem that, you know, it would be a
lot more so, I mean, you know, and but you know,
he's also saying that you know this, this this banker
is just saying, unbeknownst to the Senate, it seems that
Senator re Becca was illegally holding the funds in question
on behalf of a third party, that being job of
the HUT. So all right, right then and there, this

(12:54):
is clearly not a Swiss bank because they would have
never copped that.

Speaker 1 (12:58):
So that's the other thing I was thinking, I thought
it was odd that they that they told them the
exact amount that was stolen.

Speaker 2 (13:05):
Yeah, yeah, so but uh so that's where we see
you know, you know, where you know QUI got is like,
well or the senator And I'm not, I'm thankful, I'm not.
I'd be more concerned with the huts and shocked. As
indeed at the moment, the only person in greater danger
than Becca it's whoever stole that money. And that's where
we see Phaedra Just I love Fader's ship because it's

(13:28):
essentially just a modified Winnebago yep. And it's got a
nice paint job that's really cool too, and you know,
and you know they're under attack. She's under attacked, she's
being pursued by more bout aunty hunters, and you know,
we cut into her being chased by three ships, one
of whom is being piloted by Baine Malar AND's like,
how was I supposed to know a senator was fronting

(13:48):
for Java. If it's a misunderstanding, why not just give
back the money because it's a lot of money, you know.
So you know, Bain is trying to reason with Pedra
and then there's zan we suld you know, which Java
won't get back if you blow me up, you know,
And then you know, Zam says, well, the bounty on
you is dead or alive, with or without the money.
And there's our as saying you stole from the wrong

(14:08):
mark this time, Phedra I told you I didn't know.
I didn't know. So so Phaedria is you know, clearly over,
you know, just in deep deep poodoo. Uh So we
cut back to Qui Gon and shock t You know,
the banking clan was concerned with the recovery of money
belonging to a gangster, and the banker's explains, well, the
IBC credits in question maybe may belong to the hunt,

(14:32):
but the quantity of the missing funds is enough to
threaten the bank solvency, which you know again, yeah, you're right,
it seems like ten thousand. So maybe, you know, maybe
the exchange rate is like for every intergalactic banking clan credit,
you get like a million or a billion republic credits
or something.

Speaker 1 (14:47):
So that would that would deally be the only thing
it would really make sense to me.

Speaker 2 (14:51):
Yeah, you know, so it's like, you know, when we look,
we need those funds recovered down to the last credit
and soon and you know says, well, it's master's shock.
T said, we're not constable. We'll try our best. Don't
need to start with a review of your security logs,
and you know there they are. And so now we
go into police procedural and you could you can see
this is where Mark's experience, you know, with writing television

(15:12):
comes into play, because you know, it's very television like,
it's very quick, uh, you know, we get nice quick
burst of information, you know, and it keeps the story
on a solid pace, you know. And Quai says, look
at this, Look at what the shuttle station, the shuttle
station keeping just outside the bank in the moments before
the robbery. I've never seen a ship of this time designed,

(15:33):
designed before. Well neither have I. But I'm failing to
see the relevance. And Qui Gon says, ten thousand credits
is a lot to move, even even with a crew
of men. What makes you think it was a crew
or for that matter, a man. And then we see
an image of Phaedra. She looks like a corraxian and
shack T is like, well, I've never heard of that species.
They virtually extinct, they age very slowly and possess not

(15:56):
insignificant intellectual prowess. And shocked, He's like, are you sure
at the last part, because stealing from a hut doesn't
strike me as all that intelligent. And why it's a
great line too. I love that perhaps she was only
perhaps she only thought she was stealing from the senator.
In any case, if we find that ship, will find
the money. So then we cut to Narshata, otherwise known

(16:17):
as the Smuggler's Moon. And I gotta tell you nar
Shadow is a sharp looking place. You know. We know
it's supposed to be dirty and dangerous, and you know
it's filled with the criminal element, but man, they get
some nice high rises, so uh and it's it's Avon Baine,
you know. And Bain is like, pretty stupid move coming here.
There are bounty hunters all over this rock, and Sam says, well,
but it's the only off place, the only place you

(16:37):
can offload so many hot credits. Speaking of this, this
will go a lot smoother we work together. The bounty
on her is big enough to split three ways. Easy,
Aura done, Baine fine, but if anyone gets to kill her,
it's me.

Speaker 1 (16:49):
So wait, have we met Have we met this Bane
person before?

Speaker 2 (16:54):
Oh? Yeah, yeah, Bain is Bain is a a shall
we say, is not a glup shadow. Baine is more
of uh, you know, a fan favorite. So it just uh,
he's uh, he's a lot of fun him. You know.
He was he was in uh he was in Java's

(17:15):
Palace during eight Yms eight eight yems time as the
as the Translator Droid. So uh, you know, we we've
we've saw him in uh uh, he was on the
variant cover for Return of the Jedi the Rebellion. He's
in a deleted scene in Return of the Jedi. So okay,
then we also saw him in the Return of the
Jedi Jabas Palace one shot and the max Reebo one shot.

(17:38):
So and more importantly, I believe he was also uh
I think it was what was it? Uh, well, no,
we did see it. We did. We did see I
think we saw him in uh yeah, the Duel of
the Reprobates in the Revelations one shot.

Speaker 1 (17:55):
Too, So everybody got that.

Speaker 2 (17:59):
Okay, So yeah, he's one of these paras.

Speaker 1 (18:01):
So so what you're saying he's been around before? Okay, Oh,
so I.

Speaker 2 (18:04):
Guess technically, you know, he's been around, so that's what
you know since they started shooting Return of the Jedi.

Speaker 1 (18:08):
That's eighty three. Yeah. So so they the three of
them do decide to work together, just in time to
realize that they've lost her yay, right as the Jedi arrive,
having pretty much the same conversation. And so they they're
talking about that there was a NAR shout of traffic
control register at a ship arriving that fit the description,

(18:28):
but it didn't record a landing platform, and so they're
they're they're about to start looking around. And I have
to say, the way Qui Gon is drawn in this
inset at the bottom of this page, I did not
think that was Qui Gon No me neither me neither
does not look like Qui Gon. But apparently it is
because he senses something. He's not sure if it's a

(18:51):
threat or not. He says it's it's a it's a threat,
but it's one unrelated to our quarry. So they're thinks
are being followed. So they find her, and they find her.
She's been set upon by all three of the bounty
hunters and they're telling you to step away from the
ship and there won't be any trouble. And of course
this bin person says she doesn't speak for me, and

(19:12):
that's zam Wessel saying that, and they say, he says,
you try anything, the only choice I'll give you is
where to shoot you first, and she says, well, shoulder, definitely,
preferably just to graze, which kind of reminded me of
something that doctor Affer would say, no, no, And she
tells them that she's she's rigged everything on board with

(19:33):
thermal detonators. If anything happens to her, the remote will
be triggered. And so Aara Singh says, very clever she was.
That's actually not the clever part, and she and Raa says, well,
Jaba was to make an example of you more than
he wants his money back. She goes, oh, I know,
I was talking to them and she looks. They look
behind him and they see the Jedi. She was leaving
a trail with the Jedi for the Jedi to follow.

(19:54):
Was the clever part? Two Jedi masters. Wouldn' let an
innocent young woman get killed, would they? And Qui Gon
says she's not without a point and and shot. He says,
as much as it pains me, I'm inclined to agree
very well then, and they light their their sabers and
and do their you know, their their their Jedi poses
or whatever.

Speaker 2 (20:12):
It's a great full page too, it's really awesome looking.

Speaker 1 (20:15):
So and uh, shot, he says, gets this over with.
So they uh if it seems we've been played, it
would in fact seem so. She didn't want us to
save her from these bounty hunters. She wanted us to
distract them so she could get away, which she does.
And uh so the bounty under chase after a shot
tis about to chase after them, Qui Gon stops her, says,

(20:36):
going after that ship is a waste of time, and uh,
the and I love that. We get this inset panel
of the three bounty hunters are saying, damn it, that
ship's fast, Baine saying she's going to get away again,
and zam w also saying no, she's not. And so
he pew pews, she pew pews at the ship and
and blows it up, and BEng goes, that's it, it's done,
and uh, and Ara says, the hell it is. Until

(20:59):
we get back to to and in collect our bounty.
This isn't finished. And from there we cut back to
of course, Phedra outside of ship that looks exactly like
the one that just.

Speaker 2 (21:07):
Blew up, and she's on ord mantel this time.

Speaker 1 (21:10):
Yes, so Qui gon In shocked T descend upon her
and says, it seems you and your ship have made
a miraculous recovery. And she says, what gave me away?
And shot T says, you're switching ships? She says, yeah,
I took care of them to make them look identical.
And Qui Goun says, and you nely succeeded. The marking
on the starboard flank ever so slightly different from the
ship recorded from the ship recorded in the bank security log.

(21:33):
So Qui Gon's got sharp eyes.

Speaker 2 (21:36):
Very much.

Speaker 1 (21:37):
We find out that she switched ships on Nar Shado
when the bounty hunter's momentarily lost sight and I and
she sas I wasn't lying of a thermal detonator zough.
Just which ship they were on, she says, and new
pilot of the decoy shock t Astra, and Fadri says,
my droid rg N two, may he rest in pieces.
And again I would just like to to once again
beg Marvel, just start putting the letters in numbers. It's

(21:57):
much easier for me to read.

Speaker 2 (21:59):
It's much easier for everybody to read. I do not
know why they do that. It's just, uh, it's annoying.

Speaker 1 (22:06):
It's it's obnoxious. So and they said, and this is
all the remaining money, She says, all of it, and
you'll just you'll just take it and let me go, right,
I mean, you, Jata aren't constables, and Coli Gon says, no,
we not, We're not, but they are. And she turns
around and sees Marshall buck VENCTO of the.

Speaker 2 (22:22):
Ben Marshall buck Banko's back.

Speaker 1 (22:25):
Puts her under arrest and she says, not for long?
She says, what's that? She says, oh nothing, and just
this a little arrangement I made with my new friend
an inntesipation of this precise setback. And there's Django Fett
in his spaceship. And what she says is she says,
I just need one teeny time I paper. We're cutting back,
and he says, what kind? She says, the lucrative client,

(22:46):
She says, three times. When that job is paying you,
it's easy. All you have to do is help me
escape a benelex Marshal and then what And then the
forty eight hours later met Malisare and he says, well,
here's something you don't see every day. A fella, lady,
excuse me hitting a trifecta, she says, which, according to
my calculations, pays out to be and they say, significantly

(23:06):
more than I've ever had to pay out before. So
it's transmitted to my account, would you? And Djenko says, Dan,
that's a lot of money. She goes, ten percent of
which is now yours. So my point is, I'm surprised
they let you place that big a wager. She says, oh,
they wouldn't, not without proof of collateral. And so we
see all the credits again. So Jenko says, you stole
that money knowing you'd have to give it back. You
only needed it long enough to make more money. She

(23:29):
was thinking about gambling. When it's done right, it's more
lucrative than steeling, though significantly less fun. So this whole
thing was just was just not really a scam. I
guess kind of a scam. She just told the money
so she'd have enough to make this one bet. I
wonder if we're going to find out if she had
some sort of inside knowledge about the bet.

Speaker 2 (23:47):
It's kind of like, you know, like reverse money laundering almost,
you know.

Speaker 1 (23:51):
So and he said, did you know the credits belonging
to Java when you stole them? She said, let move
it this way. I knew that I to pull this off,
I'd have to die. But you're in need. But if
you're in need of some one to kill, you, don't
rely on two Jedi knights. And we see them leaving
with all of the credits. So so you tell me, Matt,
the Jedi existed in this story basically to be her pawns.

Speaker 2 (24:13):
So yeah, very much so. And and but here's the thing,
this is why it worked for me. It's because you know,
we we have been sort of bread if you will,
to think of the Jedi as omniscient and omnipotent, and
you know, they are just beings, uh, And they can

(24:35):
be manipulated. And you know, we've seen that in some
of the other mini series, particularly you know, the second
mace Wind or the first mace Wind mini series. You know,
we've seen that in the Anakin and Obi Wan mini series.

Speaker 3 (24:47):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (24:47):
And you know, and we've seen traces of it, you
know some of the some of the other books but
you know, it just goes to show that no matter,
you know, yeah, because you know, everybody knows Qui God,
everybody loves Qui gon Qui gon is noble and pure,
uh and a bit of a shock tea is but
methodical and meticulous. But yeah, they both got played big time.

(25:07):
Well yeah, so you know, it's just it's a nice
way to, for lack of a better term, to humanize
the Jedis.

Speaker 1 (25:15):
I suppose it just makes me think they're chumps.

Speaker 2 (25:18):
I don't think they're chumps. They just you know, they
just got played. I mean, you know, they they set
out to do what they told the Intercollected Banking Clan
they would do. They would try to find the bank's money,
and they did, so, you know, chalk it up successful mission.

Speaker 1 (25:35):
Fair enough. Yeah, I guess this is just a matter
of them not being concerned with things that don't concern them.

Speaker 2 (25:40):
No, but it's also a great chance for Mark to
bring back a couple of characters from you know that
he's written before. You know, it doesn't characters that if
you if I recall properly, when we were doing the
han Soeldom Chewbacca Tennis Yu Maxi series, we really enjoyed page,
and we really did so.

Speaker 1 (25:54):
Yeah, no, I enjoyed the story. I just it doesn't
seem like a story about about the Jedi Nights.

Speaker 2 (26:00):
No, it's it's just it's no, it's about Phaedra, but
it's about how Faedra could not have pulled this off
without the Jedi Knights.

Speaker 1 (26:08):
Do you think she's named after the Tangerine dream model?
I kind of hope so me too. I can always
mess up.

Speaker 2 (26:14):
Just email Mark, mister Guggenheimen, asking you should please do
do that?

Speaker 1 (26:19):
All right, Well Matt does that. We'll take a short
break and we'll be back to discuss Fear of the
Jedi number five of five. Yeah, let's do that, all right, Matt,
what say we talk about Fear of the Jedi issue
number five aka one more rousing speech before we go?

Speaker 2 (26:39):
Yeah, this is uh. I guess you know, we got
what two issues left of the High Republic Adventures to go,
and once those come out, you know, by by July.
I guess in theory borrow any announcements kind of dumb
with the High Republic, which I don't see happening to

(27:02):
be honest, right, So, but you know, this is uh,
this is the last one from Marvel for at least
at least you know, through through August, because you know,
we haven't gotten We will get September solicits until probably
the twenty sixth of June, and we'll see if they
got anything planned for the High Republic then. But yeah,
so and the Marvel Arrow or maybe the pausing of

(27:25):
a Marvel erow so the High Republic Fear of the Jedi.
Chapter five We are all written by Cavin Scott. Art
is by Marika Cresta. Jim Campbell is handling. The colors.
Letters are by Virtual Calligraphies Ariana Mayor phil Noto does
our main cover. Our Pride Month variant is by Betsy Colah. Yeah,

(27:45):
it's Ben Putree has a variant. And then there is
a Force Awakens tenth Anniversary by Chris Brouse, Carl Story
and neur Aje Menon. Book design, of course is Carlos laugh.
The editors are Danny Kasm and Drew Baumgardner. Mark Ponizia
is the senior editor. CB Subolski is of course the
editor in chief. A special thanks to Mikey J. Basso. Hey, Mikey, thanks,
that's a special thanks. And then from Lucas Bell again,

(28:08):
Senior editor Robert Simpson, Associate editor Grace Harris, Creative director
Michael Sigline, Art director Troy Alders, creative art manager Phil Shostack.
And from the story group, it's Matt Martina Hidalgo and
Emily Sukannie.

Speaker 1 (28:23):
Now, let me preface what's about the discussion we're about
to add by saying I enjoyed this book a lot. However,
how many of these climaxes are we going to get?

Speaker 2 (28:37):
Probably at least two more.

Speaker 1 (28:39):
Yeah, I just it's just it feels like it feels
like I've read this issue before. Well we kind of
only from dark Horse and on the ground.

Speaker 2 (28:49):
Well, and again you have to remember, you know, this
is a very rare I don't want to call it
a crossover, but it's not. But you know, the events
that are happening on Ariad on the ground are being
handled in the High Republic Adventures, And the events that
are handling above Aria Doo above the skies in space
are being handled by Marble, So you know. So so anyway,

(29:13):
last issue, you know, of course we had Nile Space Cthulhus,
which turns out that they're not actually space cthulhus, but
lots of droids, including one enormous droid. So and that's
all thanks to the last surviving child of the Storm's sister, Hatar,
and she is hidden somewhere in the Nile armada and

(29:35):
a fear engine is boosting her already formidable psychic abilities.
Uh So, having realized that they were not basing a gigantic,
lying nameless you know, basically a Nile purgle pergl you know,
you know, just when they realized that, oh my gosh,
that is an enormously huge scaven deer droid. So that's

(29:55):
where we open up with Lorna going, is that a
crifft scand android? It can't be one of the size
of it, and it's you know, it's a carcansu and droid.
So it's just and Skiers like, if there's one thing
I have learned throughout this interminable conflict, Idad, it is
to never underestimate Marchian Roe or the Nile. And of

(30:16):
course Kiev is like, whatever it is, we won't last long.
Not with that thing tearing through the Geos's hull, Skier,
can you and the other vectors scrape it off? If
only there were others other vectors. Kiev a Jedi Elock
is attempting to get what remains of the archivist Orbilin
to safety because if you'll recall, Orbelin has split himself
off or itself themselves into multiple, multiple multiple pieces.

Speaker 1 (30:40):
On too many times at least.

Speaker 2 (30:42):
Yeah, yeah, several of them have been killed, which is
not helping me surviving pieces at all. That well, Uh,
a Jedi must always fix that fear idad or in
this case, attempt to blast it from the stars. And
so Scear fires at the big scabdroid and that's trying
to peel open the geos and on, you know, on board.
Skeev is like, I'm not sure that Pearl of Wisdom

(31:04):
was ever in the sacred text Skier, I'm paraphrasing more
or less. So Milk was like, maybe we could table
the discussion of Jedi doctrine until we're not about to
be turned into space dest tree. Gosh, why do we

(31:24):
get the feeling you're about to add to our wove's
valco not me, But since his have picked up, more
ships drop back into the system, republicsh ships finally answering
our calls for assistance. That'll be a no multiple nil
fighters of all classes, and yeah, they all come dropping in.
I gotta tell you. One of them reminds me of
the Milana from Guardian to the Galaxy.

Speaker 1 (31:42):
Yeah, I saw that too.

Speaker 2 (31:43):
Yeah so, and then, of course the embedded reporters the
Nile are still blocking coms out of the sector and
yet are still able to communicate among themselves, both ships
and scabs Droidskeeve says, Keeve, what are you thinking, asked Valco.
Something that can only be disc is a plan that's
doomed to fail, but you're about to attempt it anyway.

(32:04):
I wasn't unvalid, but I've read the files real you
and Orbil and overrode the Nile damnic field of the Republic,
fair right, right, then you're with me. Belco Sibaba keep
trying to locate the child of the Storm on a marshall,
I don't doubt it, and scare Al keep hitting this
mechanical monstrosity with everything I've got. Well, you explain this
fool's errand of yours. Oh oh, it's simple enough. We're

(32:28):
heading into the belly of the beast. And that's what
they do, is uh, they go outside and they Keith
cuts a hole into the scab droid and with Real
and they are inside the droid. It was like you
weren't joking, were you? The only good thing about a
droid the sides of a small cruiser latching onto your

(32:48):
hull is that it makes it considerably easier to claim
to clamber inside its shell. And of course inside the
droid are lots of little tiny scab droids, which again
reminds me of the droids from batteries not included, or
the robots are better, or the life forms some batter
and Reel's like, which part of this is easy? Well,
it stands the reason a scrapper this size would have
defense mechans and mechanisms, and fortunately so do I. You know,

(33:11):
Keep has got the lightsaber out to cutting the little
tiny scab droids and pieces and Reel's like a Keev,
I think I found that a communication nodule. Will it
give us access to the Nile Coms network? Possibly if
I can slice into it? So while Real is trying
to work or slicing magic, Keev is Jedi bouncing around
killing tiny scab droids, and then Geo says, then get
slicing Real before these guys do the same to me.

(33:33):
There's Valco on the bridge of the Geos. All ships
report stats. We can't let a single Nile fighter get
through the Areado. What do you think we're doing, Geos?
And that's of course, Lorna. I don't know, tempest Breaker.
Last thing I heard your thrusters were off line, not
for long. I have my best people on it, VLCO, well,
my best person and a long haired layabout and long

(33:54):
eared lay about who is actually being quite helpful Laurna. Thanks, Quinn.
I think praise where praises due, te Ha. Now that
VLCO is the mark of true leadership, a crew pulling
together even under psychic assault. Pity, you can't say the same.
Sababa should have located Hutar by now I am attempting
to establish a connection with her. Now, miss d it

(34:14):
is difficult. My sister is in great pain. She is
she's right here on the Geos and Valco turns around
and there's a tar no mis d merely another illusion,
Oh no, less disturbing. What do you want, FALANASI nearly
a chance to speak with my brother working for the enemy, Sababa, Oh,

(34:38):
there would be so disappointed. Good and you know back
to Keep and Real Real says Keep. Keev, I think
I've done it. You've connected T nine to the Nile Channel,
looks that way, ready to broadcast via every scabdroid, stormship
and comsno throughout Nile occupied space. Finally ready to give
me that exclusive Marshal, just talk to Cama. I think

(35:02):
we only have audio, says Real, But yes, the galaxy
will be listening, hopefully, and Kiev starts to sort of
psych herself up. The forces with me, the forces with me,
the forces people of the galaxy. I'm Jedi Master Kiv Trinis.
Not long ago, I stood beside a hero as she
promised that the Jedi would be with you whenever darkness
closed in. Little did we know how quickly that darkness

(35:26):
would descend, or how violent its shadows would be. We
have tried to make good on the promise made that day,
a covenant to protect light and life from those who
would ravage and kill. And we're still trying, still fighting
for what we believe. But we can't do it alone.
We are all the Republic. We've heard chancellors so say it,

(35:47):
even said it ourselves countless times. But that's no longer enough.
As you hear this message. People are standing up against
the Nile on every world in the occlusion zone. Most
don't wear fancy robes or wheeled weapons. They can't call
upon the Force, but they can call on each other.
In the darkest hour, they turn to their neighbors, united
in hope, united encourage, even when they're scared, especially when

(36:12):
they're scared. I'm scared right now, more than I've ever been.
Jedi aren't supposed to admit that, but it's true. Should
I give up? Maybe? Will I give up? No, because
I know that there are people out there who can help,
who will help, because it matters, because it's right. And
of course she's saying this. You know, we're seeing scenes

(36:32):
of you know, the melee on Maria. I do right,
you know, people people tussling, you know, with the Nile.
We see scared doing it for coming in for another attack.
We are more than Jedi, We are more than the Republic.
We are light and we are life, and we stand
together whatever the costs. An Riles says, and I think
we're done, That is one former conf relay and keesas

(36:55):
do you think we get through? Well, there's no way
to know, but someone's second notice Geos. We've got our part,
you know, because all the scab joids are coming back
after Kiev and Ryle no Idea made it. Damn it
puts the signal to Kiev and get that monster off
my flight deck. So so Bam is just like she
is not a monster, Commander, She's a victim forced to
act against her will. Father wanted us to free the force,

(37:18):
brother by sacrificing our freedom, compelling us to commit atrocities
in his name. And of course Father, and that's this question,
is baron Bolein in case you had forgotten, you can
stop this setar in the attacks in the nightmares, I
can't the fear engine. The more I try to stop,
the more it forces me to continue. It's helpless unless

(37:39):
unless you stop me, brother, unless you free me and
Velkusa's commander or you know, not Velco, but you have
Velco still, commander. We have more signals coming in fast
more Nile. I don't know they were requesting comms on speakers.
Ha ha Is that a wookie not just any wookie Vlco.
That's kell Knaka, Master Kalnaka. Do you have Padawan Bell

(38:03):
with you? And then the monkl fleet is there the Togruta,
even a few damned hunts, including Scarabda Scarabed. In a while,
the Hut cartel has had enough of these Nile murk glocks.
I thought a temporary truth was an order. Do you agree?
This is a wonderful two page spread? And of course
you know, you know, you know Bell answers that he does, Marshall.

(38:25):
And we brought friends, reinforced us from the Republic, and
he was just like, at this point, Scarabda, I'll take
whatever help we can get. In which case, let me
start with pest control. Wait what Gunnar target that overblown
swamp scuttler And he was like, that's our cue to leave.
You don't mean she's about to, of course she is.
And Kee respond, tell me you got off that thing,

(38:46):
We got off Skier. Just now tell me it was
worth it, worth it. We finally outnumbered the Nile. The
tide is turning, Marshall. Did you hear that Quinn can't
let the lizard have all the fun? Were the living
cripp or my thrusters coming right up? Laura? All systems operational?
About time? And Laura starts on a tear Let's show
them how it's done. Lorna d style Toom Doom Doom,

(39:09):
and Keith gets back on the bridge. Valco report the
reinforcements have made all the difference, Marshal, although the Taguruta
are reporting a pack of phantom I cool on Igasa
Lark's throne ship. I cannot stop the projections, brother, says Htar.
The fear Engine has me in its thrall. You must
destroy it and me and Sabab is like, no, we

(39:30):
can help you, as my former padawan helped me. Just
tell me where the nile are holding you, Hitar. I'm
I'm on board the Squall Spider. I don't know what
that is. I do one of Marcia Unro's old runabouts,
soon to be a flaming ball of scrap tempest breaker. Wait,
we can still help her. She can still be saved. Laurna,

(39:50):
did you hear me? Do not engage? Repeat Akom and
Lorna has engaged, and the Squall Spider detonates and Hitar
is finally, thank you brother, it's Haar, Laura. Why did
you listen what I did? What needed to be done,
keev And about time. The tide hasn't just turned, it's
gone out. Lorna is right Marshall, the Nile fleet are scattering,

(40:14):
fleeing the battles as skid another trick like Daboo. It
has to be right. I don't think it is Jedi Yellow,
not this time. The reports are coming in from Ariotta
the Nile. They've surrendered, all right, so that sort of
spoils the High Republic Adventures number nineteen, right, Belco, are
you sure about the reports? They're confirmed, Marshall on all channels.
Admiral Cronara has corroborated them himself, and Velco goes Kiev

(40:38):
a big hug. It's over, Keev, the Nile, the Occlusion Zone,
it's all over, yes, Valco, it's over. We won. Then
we got it to be concluded. Of course, that leads
into because I was fibbing, we do have one more
coming from Marble. We have Star Wars the High Republic

(40:58):
the finale.

Speaker 1 (41:00):
I didn't want to say anything, which is.

Speaker 2 (41:02):
A one shot, so it's not like it's it's not
like it's a surprise. We knew what was coming, so
so yeah, nice little wrap up. But you're right.

Speaker 1 (41:12):
A lot of speechifying, Yeah, a lot of speechifying. And
again I enjoyed it. I I like the way that
it that it resolved, that this issue resolved, I will say,
but but yeah, it just it seems like just more
of the same. And I hope that we don't come
into the next issue and go, there's one more thing
we need to do, because at that point I'm gonna go,
you know what, I'm done. I'm done.

Speaker 2 (41:36):
Well, I'll be curious to see how the Higher Republic
adventure is unfold, especially with Farzala having come to grips
with everything and you know, resonating, right.

Speaker 1 (41:48):
So with that, we'll take another short break. We'll be
back to discuss what's coming next week.

Speaker 2 (41:52):
That sounds like a great idea.

Speaker 1 (41:55):
Okay, Matt, what's coming next week?

Speaker 2 (41:57):
We get Star Wars number two, the Rise of Skywalker
adaptation number five of five, and the Bad Batch GHO
stage it's number four or five.

Speaker 1 (42:10):
Very nice. So yeah, three books, two of which we'll
be discussing in some depth, and we'll be back.

Speaker 2 (42:16):
Then.

Speaker 1 (42:16):
We're gonna we're gonna put rec room on hold for
this week, maybe next week because we got a lot
to discuss this week. We'll see how it goes. But
when we do come back, I got a good one
for you. One that Matt hasn't even heard of. Sou'll
just be on the look up for that until then.
For Star Wars splash page, I'm Jeff, I'm Met I.
May the Force be with you always.

Speaker 4 (42:42):
The Star Wars splash page theme song is Mark Hamill

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
