Speaker 1 (00:00):
You're listening to Star Wars Splash Page Comics and Review.
This is episode number four hundred and fifty five, Jeff,
and she's.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
Back, big, stay.
Speaker 3 (00:17):
Humble as be.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
Hark On.
Speaker 3 (00:24):
I don't want since running the gust scene.
Speaker 4 (00:34):
Boy she Ever, we have a new a new doctor
to talk about this weekend, Darris, maybe my favorite one yet.
Speaker 5 (00:51):
Maybe certainly my favorite doctor Afro number one. That is
thankfully the only book we have to talk about, so
that we can focus on it, not thankfully because we
don't have any more books, but thankfully we can focus
on it. But before we dive into that, Matt, what
kind of news have we got to to speak of
other than the fact that we get we get used
as a source for an article last week.
Speaker 3 (01:12):
Yeah, us and the Star Wars books. But you know
that's just really what they wouldn't call it a sourcing.
They're just rehashing what we tweeted, what we put on
Blue Sky, so they were creating clickbait. So so yeah,
so that that relates to what you and I had
discussed last week about the trade, the change to the
Star Wars Volume four trade paperback solicit. It's now ten
(01:35):
issues and maybe depending on you know, there's no official
pr H solicit yet that will it will be up
in either April or May, collecting ten issues, which to me,
to my mind, and it's again this is my conjecture,
no way official, no way is it gospel. Seems to
me that perhaps since they're calling it, you know what
(01:57):
Star Wars they republic now in the trade, then it's
that maybe Star the Star Wars series is just going
to run ten issues. So but you know, we'll see.
I could be wrong, you know, And like I said,
it's just my conjecture. I have no way of knowing.
I'm not involved in these publishing decisions, so so that's
how we go. But so yeah, we will see. However,
(02:20):
what we are getting, speaking of solicits, is this is
the week that we get the September solicits from Marvel,
as well as October solicits from dark Horse Comics. We
have already had an advanced look at what's coming in
September third and that is Hans Solo Hunt for the
(02:40):
Falcon five ISU mini series that is being written by
Rodney Barnes, so you know who wrote The Wizard's mini
series and has been adapting viah SOCOA the TV show
mini series, and this is going to be sort of
set uh you know, pre the Force Awakens because you know,
(03:03):
as you know, we have you know, as we know
full well from the Force Awakens that you know that
the Falcon has been sitting on Jack Who and and
then of course you know, uh, you know it was
stolen perhaps, so so you know, what we will do
is we will this will sort of you know, detail
(03:25):
what's going on with that. And of course this is
this is kind of crucial because back in you know,
twenty seventeen, uh, there was a five part story called
Flight of the Falcon in Star Wars Adventures when IDW
was publishing it. There was also the I mentioned there
(03:47):
was the Lando's Luck Book, so and then the Pirates
Price Book as well. So h so, you know, all
of this was sort of kind of building off what
we learned in The Force Awakens. But you know, it's
just uh, you know, it's going to be interesting to
see how they throw all of us together, you know,
(04:07):
because I mean, you know, we got the Decanne Gang,
the Irving Boys, so you know it's just kind of
huh interesting. So you know, we will we will see
what happens and of course, you know that was you know,
obviously you remember that that preview when the Force Awakens
was first being announced. You know, there was that Chewie,
we're home. So you know, so it's it's going to
(04:30):
be very interesting to see how this this rolls out.
I'm intrigued by the notion, and I like the fact that,
you know, we are doing a I like that it's
being set up as a five issue mini series because Franklin,
I think that's what they should be doing going forward. Now,
you know, I think that perhaps, you know, there might
(04:54):
be just a smidge of Star Wars comics fatigue, uh
settling in. I mean, I'm certainly not complaining that we
you know that we have four titles from Marvel.
Speaker 1 (05:05):
Here's here's the problem.
Speaker 3 (05:07):
The essentially the one title from dark Horse.
Speaker 5 (05:09):
So here's the problem. I think it's not necessarily fatigue.
It's just we need some variation in the story we've had.
We've had all High Republic all the time, and we've
had all sequel trilogy stuff all the time. We've had
very little recently until this this new Star Wars book
from you know, the the O t era, Yeah, just
(05:31):
after and so I think I think we just need
more of that. But if they're you know, that's why
I'm hoping that it's not just this tennisue mini series
they're doing. But if it is, hopefully they get something
else coming down the.
Speaker 3 (05:40):
Pike, and and you know, I to build on that.
I think it would be a grand idea, you know,
and I would I would do it, as I have,
as I have said numerous times on in our numerous
episodes of this podcast. Uh, you know, I firmly believe
that rather than doing uh you know, these uh fifty
(06:02):
issue series, you know, it's I think it's better to
do these self contained five issue minis ten issue maxish
you know, and then you know, focus on a certain
group of characters or a character, you know, jump up
and down the timeline. I think it provides a lot
more breadth of exposure and of course to it. Yeah,
(06:25):
we did that like with the Han Solo and Chebacco
maxi series. We did that with the Yoda Maxi series.
We did that with the Inquisitors for issue mini series,
which you know, I enjoyed. I mean it was a
little bit wooden at times, but you know, you know,
it introduced us to tens to run. But we have
seen now in Jedi Knights. You know, in Jedi Knights,
I think is doing it very effectively because essentially each
(06:46):
issue is a one and done story focusing on a
small select group of characters, in this case specific Jedi Knights.
Speaker 4 (06:54):
So and.
Speaker 3 (06:58):
I think also to build on you on what you said,
to add further to that is it's cool to see
stuff that is outside of the ot, you know, and
that's that's leading into the sequel trilogy because that is
such a an expansive area that has yet to be mined.
(07:18):
And obviously, you know, for good reason. You know, we
had a lot of stuff in the pod Amin series,
but you know, there's always room for more and I
do think that we'll probably see that with with This
Doctor after a series as well. Uh, you know, it's
it's not a Maxi series, it is a it is
(07:39):
it is a monthly ongoing so uh and it's already
off to a really smashing start, I think. So, but
you know that's just me and what do I know?
Speaker 5 (07:53):
That's how I start my day every day. All right,
So that's it for the news huh.
Speaker 3 (08:05):
Now, well, it mean double check just to make sure.
Oh yeah, like I said, we've got Solicit's coming out,
so we get the new new Han Solo and Chebacco series.
Oh Dark Horses next outing for Hyperspace stories, Tides of
Terror is actually getting looks like it's going to be
getting a probably a you know, a small series of
(08:27):
retailer exclusive variants. Tony Fleeks has got a pair of
variant covers for Nowhere Games and Comics. And you can
see this on the Facebook and Blue Sky feeds. You
know that you can get from Nowhere Games and Comics.
It's forty dollars for the two issues. One is you know,
what is full color and then one is sort of
it's not really black and white per se, but it's
(08:48):
you know, it's more like penciled in. But you know,
definitely do check that out. So I thought that was
kind of cool. Uh, you know, it was, it was
was really awesome. You finally have a look at the
Annuel Jose Olders cover b for the twentieth and final
issue of Star Wars The High Republican Adventures Phase three.
Of course, you know, shows scene in Lula and it's
you know, it's it's cool. I mean, you know, because
(09:10):
Daniel has been writing Abo High Republic Adventures essentially since
day one, so it's nice to see him, you know,
be able to do his first ever comic book cover,
as he said on Blue Skyt's and you can see that,
like I said on the Facebook page and the Blue skypete.
And then we also have an early preview of next
week's The High Republic Adventures in Phase three, number nineteen,
(09:34):
so you can already get a peek at that. So
and now that is truly all the news.
Speaker 5 (09:41):
All right, we will take a very short break and
be back to discuss Doctor Afro Chaos Agent number one. Yay, okay,
I am very excited. Although I will say I love
the fact that the logo that they put together for
Doctor Afrachaos Agent, the did the letters of Doctor Afra
(10:04):
have her.
Speaker 3 (10:05):
Her tattoos and electric tattoos.
Speaker 5 (10:07):
And and then and by the end of this issue,
she doesn't have them anymore.
Speaker 3 (10:12):
No, not at all, not at all.
Speaker 5 (10:14):
So I I love this cover, and uh, this creative
team has I'm on board.
Speaker 2 (10:22):
I'm in.
Speaker 3 (10:24):
Yeah, it's it's a good solid team, you know, and
it's uh, you know, I mean, obviously you know we're
big fans of Alyssa. We missed them a lot writing
Doctor Afra. But I you know, I got to say
from this first issue, I'm I'm loving what Cherish Chin
has done here. And you know, when this was announced
and Cherish Chin was announced as the writer, I was like, well,
that's pretty cool because uh, you know, uh, I'm not.
Speaker 5 (10:45):
Familiar with Cherish Chin's work. This is this is my
first time.
Speaker 3 (10:49):
Has she's done a couple of movies. There's my dead
friend Zoe. We're all gonna die, uh she h. And
I don't know, I don't know her pronoun or their pronouns,
so I'm getting them wrong. I apologize. But Cherish has
also worked on a Radiant Red mini series for Image
(11:13):
that I believe came out. I think it was twenty
twenty two, and it's radiant read's a really good story.
So that's why I was like really stoked when Cherish
got announced, you know, and attached to the Doctor Apple project.
Said well that's perfect. So that's that's that's a whole
lot of fun.
Speaker 5 (11:27):
And for what I can tell, Cherish does go by
she her. Okay, all right, okay, again, if we have
that wrong, somebody please correct us.
Speaker 3 (11:33):
We will, yeah, please do it because and then again,
it's not intentional, you know, we are not trying to
you know, to not We're not trying to be difficult.
But yeah, so this, uh, it's an awesome start. Written
by Cherish chen Art is by Gabriel Kuzman. Colors are
by Michael, by Michael Atia and we know Michael, we
know Mike. It's funny because he, you know, Michael does
(11:55):
all the dark Horse colors for Star Wars books and
he goes by Michael. They but he's going by Mic
here for Marvel. So uh, letters of course are by
Virtual Caligraphiece Joe careamanyam.
Speaker 2 (12:07):
This main cover great cover.
Speaker 3 (12:10):
Yeah, that is by EJ. Sue. Uh and there are.
Speaker 2 (12:14):
You know Marvel.
Speaker 3 (12:16):
Marvel has given this the treatment, you know, because we
do have more than a few variant covers.
Speaker 2 (12:21):
And five that I'm counting, Yeah.
Speaker 3 (12:23):
Yeah, yeah, and uh and they are awesome. This as
a matter of fact, Sarah Paicelli has one. It is
uh and this is the one I ordered. It's the
one in twenty five variant and it shows shows Doctor
Apparold and basically you know the uh you know when
you get booked, uh, you know or you know much
TV your mugshot. You know, so it's you know, it's
you know her name, and.
Speaker 5 (12:44):
It looks like Sarah did that with a Susa Bertov.
Speaker 3 (12:47):
It looks like very much so, hey, look at you
reading everything.
Speaker 4 (12:51):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (12:51):
There's also a pictures Chris Sprouse, Carl story Neri Ajment
on the Force Awakens tenth Anniversary variant. Pablo Collar has
a pri variant, and then Emma Lupaccino has a really
solid variant as well, showing after in a stolen spacer,
and then Karen Darbo's variant shows is a very artful
(13:12):
revision of Afro and Skywalker, so it's it's very cool.
And of course Hasu's a berdtof I believe handled the
colors with Emma's Emma's cover, and then it looks like
Meira Ajmnon did the colors on Karen darbos cover, and
Rachelle Rosenberg handled the colors for Pablo Collar's Pride variant.
(13:32):
The designer the book is Carlos Lau. The logo designer
that you the logo design that you like so much, Jeff,
That is by Jay Bowen. The assistant editors on this
book are Mikey J. Basso and Drew bomb Gardner. Mark
Pinzia is the editor. Ceb Sibelski is our editor in chief,
and then from Lucas Oni get Robert Simpson the senior editor,
(13:53):
Grace Rs the associate editor, Michael Sippling the creative director,
Troy Alders the art director. Phil Shostak is the creative
art manager. From the story group, we have Pablo Hidalgo,
Matt Martin, and Emily screw Kani. So you know, good
stuff all the way around.
Speaker 5 (14:08):
And I would like to say, first thing, when you
when you get to the very first page, this first
image of doctor Afra is to me perfect.
Speaker 3 (14:20):
It is, isn't it this.
Speaker 5 (14:21):
Inset panel or they're saying case never D two seven
seven three one Doctor Shelley Lona Afra.
Speaker 2 (14:26):
That's her.
Speaker 5 (14:27):
And I love the way it looks. It's it's cinematic
without being you know, to use the the term you
used last week, without being uncanny Valley. It just I
just I love everything about this book.
Speaker 3 (14:40):
Well, you know what's interesting is uh, you know, I'm
getting a uh you know this is uh with Gabriel's
art here, it's very much uh uh you know, it's
very much a dark Horse vibe. And for good reason,
and that reason being is Gabriel did did some work
on Star Wars Dark Times. When he for dark Horse,
(15:01):
uh he, Gabriel worked on Darth Vader and the Cry
of Shadows by issue mini series. Uh, you know, and
so it's just, you know, it's like it's like good
stuff and you know, and it's it's the sort of yeah,
it's it's it's it's gritty, but it's also got you know,
(15:24):
really good clean lines and there's perfect shading and and
Mike Michael Attia's colors here are just spot on.
Speaker 5 (15:33):
You know what it looks like to me. The lines
are clean, the colors are gritty.
Speaker 3 (15:39):
That's yeah, that's kind of how.
Speaker 5 (15:40):
It feels to me that the the colors and the
shadows are sort of gritty and unkempt, I'll say, in
the best way possible. And it's but the lines are clean.
Speaker 3 (15:50):
And it works nicely because you know, Michael Attia also
worked you know, on on on Darth Vader and the
Cry of Shadows and you know coloring Gabriel Gooseman's art
there well, so you know, the these two are clearly
familiar with each other and they know how to play
off of each other really well. So essentially we're at
the Central Courthouse in Chandrilla. Remember this book is set
(16:11):
posts the Battle of jack Who. So we are in
the era of the New Republic, and Afro's ways have
not really changed. I mean, granted, she she's got the galaxy.
Now the empire is gone, so that target is off
of her back. And it's it's tough out there. You know,
it's tough out there for a rogue archaeologist. She's facing
(16:32):
a litanyum charges, you know, burglary, forgery, bribery, unlawful possession
of New Republic government property, disturbing the peace, impersonating a
New Republic officer. I just you know, and and you know,
the the judge in question is like, now, a depraved
individual like yourself would typically be thrown into Pincher's penitentiary.
But dude to this previously submitted character testimony testimony, she says,
(16:55):
you are sent us to supervisor release. And of course
the others there, you know, who are awaiting their sence
like booh, ridiculous. And you know, she is given the
admonishment of do not engage in any illegal activity, including
unsanctioned archaeological pursuits and notify your assigned parle officer of
your whereabouts at all times. Is this understood? It's just oh, absolutely,
(17:18):
I promise to get my act together, sir. Uh, she
doesn't get her act together, and that's where we you know,
we find her on Shandra Cant uh. And you know,
again they're doing a really nice job because Shandra Cant
is a moon that orbits Schandrilla. And for people who've
(17:43):
got to go to Star Wars Galactic star Cruiser, uh,
it could be seen out of the atreum Star Wars
signed window when you first came on board, and it
was also seen on the in cabin itinerary screen. So
it's a nice little cut, you know, you know, to
mention that it's you know, and it's you know, I
never got to go on Star Wars Galactic Cruiser. It
(18:04):
was just too expensive for me. Uh, And I couldn't
I couldn't justify it. But you know, for people who
did go on it, I'm sure you know, if they're
reading this comic, they're gonna go, oh cool, so and so. Yeah.
So she is uh breaking out, you know, literally smashing
out of a second floor window, pulling what looks to
me like a nod to Indiana Jones and the Temple
(18:25):
of Doom, you know, falling out the window and hitting
a you know, a tarp to break her fall while
going to a waiting car, which again, if you'll recall
short round was waiting for Indiana Jones, you know, in
the what the Dusenberg I think it was.
Speaker 5 (18:42):
Yeah, I believe so, Yeah, it was a Rolls or Dusenberg,
one of the two.
Speaker 3 (18:46):
Yeah, I should not because I've got the car. I've
got the match box Indiana Jones car from the movie.
Yet hang on a bear of by bulletin board. But
and they trive all and you know she's and you
know she's out. She plans c Mexo. I'm at the
front entrance, my front or your front? There is only
one front. Do we need to go over the concept
of actus and interests again? They designed these casinos to
(19:08):
be confusing. On purpose drive, you know, she's being chased
and then you know we see that she's also being
monitored by the New Republic security.
Speaker 2 (19:17):
So you just cute she thinks she's getting away. That's
kind of the vibe I got from it.
Speaker 3 (19:22):
Yeah, you know, it's just just just you know, to
see these guys talking. It's just you think they actually
had a plan. See, yeah, they probably didn't even have
a plan. A Are you sure this is that we're
supposed to be tracking. Well, that's what the file says.
Twenty credit says they get shot down before the Giro Observatory,
Giro Bank. They want to make a past Tasho guards.
I'm in for twenty, I'm went for forty and you know, yeah,
(19:46):
and you know, as they're watching, we see somebody in
the background in shadow. If I were you lot, I
wouldn't es underestimate doctor Afra. She's gotten out of more
knots than any of you will in your lifetimes. Telawski,
it's time to move in on the target copy of that,
and we get this two page spread that is actually
cinematic at scope and I like how Gabriel has sort
of blurred the background here, so you know, it does
(20:09):
look like you're watching a movie.
Speaker 2 (20:10):
It does very very much job.
Speaker 3 (20:12):
And Mex out of the road and it's just like
the caning on us. Should we try that maneuver from
the Koop watch, you know, and.
Speaker 2 (20:20):
It ends up getting into getting blowed up.
Speaker 3 (20:22):
Yeah, She's like, well, maybe I can slice into the
engine corps, redistribute the power. Take that boom boom, get boom.
And then we see a New Republic guy. You're just
you know, with a rocket launcher. Ah here I was.
I told you you'd be troublesome to bring in, but you
were nothing for my trusty blaster cannon. You disappoint me, doctor,
And so we go to Nakadia and we get another
(20:42):
nice little you know, geographic reference here. Because Nikadia. If
you've read the Battlefront Twilight Company novel, or listen to
the audio book, or read Victory's Price an Alphabet Squadron novel,
or read Aftermath Empire's End, you will know this planet
because uh, this is uh, this is the place essentially.
(21:08):
Uh if memory serves me correctly, that you know that
mon Mathma took the Senate, you know, the New Republic
Senate to uh to you know, to sort of vote,
you know, decide what to do with the Battle of
jack who so you know, so kind of neat. Uh.
So she's picked up, she's taken in, and she has encountered.
(21:30):
She encounters Director Gray of the Department of Artifacts and
Archival Goods Retreatment a k A dagger uh and Essentially,
this is a unit that is like monuments men. They
they're they're tasked with discovering and recovering culturally valuable works
(21:53):
of art, and of course, as director Gray says, especially
those hidden away or stolen, dearing imperial rule, the treasure
is that many thought lost for all ages, of which
preservation means the preservation of civilization, so very clear, not uh,
you know, to the to the Army unit monuments meant
of which the movie you know, because the movie was
(22:14):
based on this unit and that was their job. You know,
they went into Europe to recover artwork stolen by the Nazis.
And if you haven't seen the movie, I highly recommend
to see it. If you haven't read the book, go
to your library and get a copy. It's a fabulous read. Uh.
You know, there's a there's a line from the movie
that George Cloney delivers. You know, it says it's you know,
(22:36):
not paraphrasing it because you know, if you destroy a
civilization's culture, you have effectively destroyed the civilization. But if
you could preserve that culture, that civilization will live on.
And it rings true. Uh and you know, and especially now,
(23:00):
and that's all I'll say about current events. So Gray
is given after the rundown, you know, an Afras like, yeah,
yeah whatever, Uh, make Max up, makes Mexico. Miso is
still there as well. Uh, and you know we get
another you know, we find out the shock shock. Uh.
You know, as Gray is trying to find out who
(23:21):
Afras parole officer is, it's Meso.
Speaker 2 (23:24):
Hold on, hold on. Okay.
Speaker 5 (23:26):
So I'm reading this this afternoon and I see this
beb beep and he picks up a communicator and says,
you've reached Meso. And then we cut to uh the desk,
and the same message is coming out of the phone.
And that's when you somebody else, this other guy barges
into the director. We just confirmed that Meso Torrento Afres
partner is her parole officer. So it's all hitting. At
(23:48):
one time, I laughed out loud, pansed around and said,
what's so funny? And I had to tell her what
was happening, and that's what I said. Okay again. I
loved the last that that worked on this book. Crash
Wong did a wonderful job. Cherish is making it her own,
giving it her own vibe. It still feels like Afra,
(24:12):
but it's this is this is like the James Gun Afra.
Speaker 3 (24:18):
This is going to be a side of Afra that
we haven't really seen. I mean, there will be elements
of her that we have seen before, because but that's
what we know and love about her. But Cherish is
just off to a rollicking start with this one. And
like you said, Cherish is making this her run. Yes
she is. Yeah, it is imprinted with Cherish and you know,
(24:40):
and with Gabriel and with Mike and with Joe Caroline. Now,
so you know, I mean, this is going to be.
Speaker 5 (24:46):
I'm strapped in, I'm in, I'm in for the long tea.
Speaker 2 (24:49):
I'm locked.
Speaker 3 (24:50):
I'm locked and loaded for this one. This is gonna
be a lot of fun.
Speaker 5 (24:53):
And so what what's what Cracknip? This other thing that
crack Nip is Mexico being a rodient. Is is bawling
his eyes out the entire time, says listen, director, everything
she said made a lot of sense at the time,
you know, just so so but so she so she
gets her you know, basically her mission, and she's she's
(25:14):
going she's supposed to go retrieve. Uh, well, we don't
really find out what it is now. But she's trying
to talk to Afro and saying, look, we want we're
doing exactly what you're doing, except we're not selling it
for profit. We're we're cataloging it, we're arc aving it,
we're keeping it safe.
Speaker 3 (25:32):
Yeah, and this is something that you would you know,
you know, and and the and the the subtext here
is you would be good at this. This is what
you do, and we could use your skill on this
because you know, Gray, Gray is you know, basically you know,
Gray is dealing with a little bit of administrative pushback
onto this because you know, there are people within the
New Republic who are like, well, why don't we have
(25:53):
to done this? What's the point? And the point is
very valid, and Gray knows this and that's when you know,
and you know because then you know, Matthew, because Grace
saying do this, do this, and you know it's it's
you know, and affers like, well why you know, and
and Gray's like, you know, maybe maybe you do need
to be on a on a mining colony, you know,
(26:15):
and in prison, you know, to sort of cool off
and you know, figure out what you've done wrong with
your you know, since you're you're not going to change.
And that's when Luke walks in and he's just like, uh,
you know, maybe she just needs a good influence, and
Afra is just farm boy. Why am I not surprised?
And Lucas just a for It's good to know that
(26:36):
times of radical change, some things don't. And Grey says,
thank you for coming, Jedi Skywalker, and I like that
you calls him Jedi skywalker, right. You know, he's no
longer a general, he's no longer a military. He is Jedi.
He you know, it's it's it's more than an honorithmic
and you know, like you said again, you know, Gray
breaks it down for Afra. You know, this is how
(26:57):
the Daggers operate, you know, you know, for teams of
our chaeologists. And then you know she does your s
feel that she looks at both of them and says, well,
which brings us to you two. This is bath backchine.
And we get a holographic image and I could not
find the image. I could not find which species this
guy is, and she's like, this is bath backschine. He
(27:18):
carries himself as a seller of rare and curious artifacts,
but in reality, the acquisition of his wares are rarely
through verified and legal beings. Recently, he's got his hands
on something more concerning. He's been shopping a Louovian gauntlet
that he claims was experimented on by the Imperials to
harness a powerful source of energy, which would make sense.
(27:39):
That's par for the course you think about it, and
Gray is very up front because look, it could be
pure fiction. And you know, Baccine has been more of
a menace and a real danger in the past. However,
the last two teams of daggers said to investigate had
both disappeared without a trace. They tracked him too dyute.
But we can't risk lose any more members, Skywalker. I
(28:01):
know our leaders have asked you a step then, Afra.
You're frankly a huge liability, but we need someone with
your risk tolerance and knowledge. If you successfully retrieve the
artifact and return it to us, perhaps we can take
that into consideration when it comes to this latest series
of fractions. She've been cord and Lucas just like, well,
you know, look, you know, you know how much of
a choice here, and she's well, there's always a choice,
(28:23):
far boy, it's just deciding what's the best deal for
yourself and what's for the greater good? So die you
it is and of course you've seen.
Speaker 2 (28:34):
Die you, Jeff, I'll take your word for it.
Speaker 3 (28:38):
No, you have because you watched the old one Kenobe
mini series. Right. Oh yeah, yeah, that's where that's where
Leah was kidnapped to oh right, so you know it
is it is. It's you know, it's essentially kind of
like Narshada. You know, it's a it's a it's a
place of you know, scum and low life, so to speak.
So they're in the ship and Luke and the Afa
(28:59):
are talking, uh you know, uh and uh. He looks
over to Afra, who has palmed Director Gray's water clock,
who you know in the couple of issues a couple
of pages before you know, Ray it said, now it's
a knockoff. It's not realized that. I'd expected you him
to have noticed that, and Afra did notice it because
(29:19):
it's not a knock off. It's real, the real deal.
So that's why she's got it. So so we kind
of get a little catch up here between the two
of them, because you know, they encountered each other at
the Battle of Jeku. Uh yeah, they've been count you know,
they encountered each other at the in the you know,
in the in the uh oh, the Vader crossover, Vaiter down,
(29:43):
baiter down, uh, you know, and and you know the
obviously encountered each other some I believe in the research
is back in doctor Affric volume tube, and Luke is
just uh, you know again, this is this is post
return of the Jedi Lute. You know, he's sort of
a little bit more measured, you know, for someone has
traveled as you. I'm surprised you didn't plant roots somewhere
like that. You surely you'd be more comfortable in a
(30:05):
place with more nooks and crannies. It's been a surprising
few years. You're telling me, oh, yes, our galactic here now.
Please don't right, you don't like the shower of accolades,
farm boy, Well, the good guy's won, right, we should
all be happy about that. And Luke just you know,
stuns her. Since when does doctor Affert believe the good guys?
(30:26):
You know? And then you know what what what transpires
as Affre says, you know, look, there's a vacuum now.
The new Republic is still getting set up, and there
are lots of people with scores to settle with it
with her, and she's not really safe still, you know,
and you know, she's having to make her way through
this new galaxy, this new this new universe, if you will,
(30:48):
while still having to deal with the fallout of what
she's done, you know, during the time of the Empire,
and you know, surely it was not pleasant. So so
they make their way. They land and value city and again,
oh my god, just how well it's drawn and how
(31:09):
well it's colored here, and just you know, the way
the way Karamine has lettered everything. It's just everything, it's perfection.
And they find Bath and Afra. You know, she tells Luke, hey,
be cool, and we're you know, and we're good. So,
(31:36):
you know, so Afrigos and you know, introduces herself, but
before she does, she tells Luke, look cover up. You know,
you know, you might not want.
Speaker 2 (31:46):
To be identified advertised.
Speaker 3 (31:49):
Yeah, yeah, yeah. So and so basically after Tells Tells,
tells Bath here.
Speaker 2 (31:54):
Who has a mohawk. I love I love the mohawk.
Speaker 3 (31:58):
Yeah, I wish I knew what the species was.
Speaker 5 (32:00):
He's a Ninja turtles vibe going. He's like a combination
of bebop and rock Steady very much.
Speaker 3 (32:04):
So, I just I think we've seen this before.
Speaker 5 (32:08):
So possibly so so, but yeah, he uh, he introduces her,
introduces herself and calls him by name.
Speaker 2 (32:16):
Or she knows.
Speaker 5 (32:17):
She just calls him by name, and he knows who
she is. And he says, do we know each other? Yeah,
it's like, you know, your reputation precedes you and so,
you know, she says, you had recently acquired something that
holds interest to a few parties, and uh, he goes,
and it is this one of them, pointing to loop.
He puts his hand up. She goes, this is just
my partner Barmfoy, which is exactly what doctor Affer would do,
(32:41):
farm boy barm Foy, And so she said, yeah. So
she tells him, you know, look, you get through it
to the point I want the gauntle that you have.
I know one Buyern particular would love to snatch that
up for their armory collection Pronto ronto, which is a nice,
nice idiom there. And of course he you know, he
says that doesn't belong in any connection. She says, they
(33:01):
a collection. She says, well, they certainly have the credits
and that's the only thing that matters. Says, you have
it with you, and he looks around, and of course
he does. He says the and she calls him the
Luovian star is the same ones in the text of
Sava Baco's research. So this was likely used to harnish
energy for their large scale architectural works, says precisely in
(33:25):
these scorch marks. He says, some unfortunate side effects of
what makes this piece particularly interesting. This is a prototype
that's been built to harness more than just electricity or
combustible power. You see, this isn't just a relic anymore. Doctor,
With this, anyone can harness the force. Dun, dun, dumb.
And of course Luke chimes in, that's not possible. She
goes and that is a big that is a big claim.
(33:46):
Bath And as Barmfoy so calmly pointed out, pretty unbelievable.
And she you see her kicking him under the table.
Speaker 3 (33:52):
It's seriously, don't blow the cover here, dude.
Speaker 2 (33:55):
And he goes on.
Speaker 5 (33:56):
Bath goes on to say, I dispatched a few defense
specialists myself. It's a prototype of things. A little messy,
but it was remarkable. Frankly, we'll take a large number
for me to give this up. I know what I've
got this time. And of course Luke says, well, it
sounds like this belongs with the appropriate authorities. And he says,
and he says, why don't you just give it to us?
Give me a number, He says, if I could just
hold onto it a little for a little longer. And
(34:17):
I'm immediately thinking of Gollum from Lord of the Rings.
Here he calls it my precious, And so Luke reveals
themselves just baff beksheen on behalf of the New Republic
Defense Forces. You are here by order to surrender this
object into our custody, which I'm sure is gonna work
fine with this guy.
Speaker 3 (34:36):
Oh yeah, always, it always does.
Speaker 5 (34:38):
But so he read Baff reaches for it, Afro knocks
it off the table, and of course, you know, calls
him or he looks up and know he calls him Skywalker,
so he knows who he is. So it clamps himself
onto Luke's hand, and he immediately starts buzzing and doing
all sorts of stuff that looks like it hurts.
Speaker 3 (34:54):
And because because power is surging through him and he's
getting a little you know, he's he he's getting he's
he's he's getting worried. After he's like, far boy, you
need to get that off of you right now. He's like, ah, like,
what have you done me? Who told you to start
besting with a force? You don't? And I was like,
let's see here, maybe a trick from the good old
kuwat job will work, and Luca's just like ah, So
she throws a cup at him, doesn't do anything, and
(35:17):
just to look on her face, you know, worth a
try in bath. It's like, I'm out of here, but he's.
Speaker 5 (35:22):
Not because she she she clamps him to a get
some binders on him around an ankle in the other
to a table, so we can't get anywhere, and so
she's gonna go try to deep deep power. The Jedi
A lectures, hey, Luke, buddy, how you doing. He's like
a bad, very bad. Can't contain whatever this is. And
she sees something behind the bar and that might work.
(35:43):
She's Luky to do me favorites. Is not a good time,
and he says it's not the force. Not sure what
this is, but we know it's not the force, because
she says, is it possible for you to restrict the force?
Speaker 2 (35:53):
Surge?
Speaker 5 (35:54):
And she says, well, we'll try it, try, try to
suck it in or something. I've got a plan, and
so he does. In the look on his face, the
way he's drawn here is just horrific. Cannot imagine what
he's feeling. And I'm I'm talking about digital page twenty one,
the top left corner.
Speaker 3 (36:09):
Oh it's nuts, yah, because he's clearly feeling a lot
of pain, a lot of pains, and it's this this
is really taxing it mentally and physically.
Speaker 5 (36:17):
And keep in mind, this is this is someone who
was electrocuted by the Emperor so much that you saw
you saw lightning bolts on his teeth. So yeah, uh
so Afra, you takes that moment to jump behind the
bar and she does something. I can't really tell what's
going on here. The action could be a little better
mapped out for for a simpleton like me.
Speaker 2 (36:36):
It's not bad. But she does something with the droid.
Speaker 3 (36:40):
And uh, and it does looks like she gets the
droid to help sort of you know, collect the uh,
you know, the rope line around the little uh.
Speaker 2 (36:48):
Okay, I guess that's what it was.
Speaker 5 (36:50):
Okay, So he's able to contain it long enough for
her to get the rope around him.
Speaker 3 (36:55):
Yeah, and then she plugs a chord from the from
the droid in to the gauntlet to sort of maybe
try to short circuit it, which is kind of what
she does here because she's you know, she's cracked up
on the back of the droid, which looks like an
Evie nine droid. And she's like, okay, go ahright, let's
see here, I shoot this code which ah here goes
click and that negates the gauntlet, which goes flying off
(37:18):
of Luke's hand, and Luke drops to the floor and
Afro walks up and this is just this great inset
panel of him. You know, she's standing over him, looking
down and all we see is him through through the
spread of her legs around her boots. You're still alive.
You may have sent a couple of my fingers, but
I think so.
Speaker 5 (37:37):
I will say this though, I want to hear Mark
Hamill grit. You need to run between his teeth. That
is the most intense I've ever seen Luke Skywalker look, period.
Speaker 3 (37:50):
It's nuts. It is crazy, absolutely absolutely crazy. So so
and she's like, well, it looks like some good rn
R is an order for you after this adventure. She
leans to pick up the gauntlet and she goes, and
you've got your guy too. You know, Bath is knocked out.
I've got my guy. Baf is right, this thing is
worth more than he could fathom. He was in way
(38:10):
over his head with something like this. Me though, I
bet I could find a good home for it. Maybe
one way, take it to wild space, some credits to
live off of too. And so she's about to turn
around and walk away, and Luke is like Afro until
next time, far boy. I hope it's not for a while,
Afra no, And she pauses, and Luke gives a really
good speech here, not even really a speech, he just
(38:31):
lays it out of the line.
Speaker 2 (38:32):
Oh yeah, you don't want to go to jail. You
don't want to make he chase it anymore.
Speaker 5 (38:35):
He says, this is your chance to get away from
all of this, and she says to him, she goes,
do you think they're gonna give me any leeway? They're
gonna put me on. Alisha soon to a step back
in that office, and Luke tries some reason with her.
He says, you don't have anyone out there. He'll always
be running looking over your shoulder. And she says uncomfortable running.
It's like how I'm built. Laying this gauntlet is my
(38:56):
way out, shes aren't you tired of that life? This
is one time we go back. We cut a deal
for you. And I like this because so here's I'm
gonna get a little get a little uh little poetic
on you for a second, talk a little bit about
mental health and things, Afra. This what struck me here
(39:17):
is Afra is someone who only knows survival mode. I've
done several people people in my life who constantly live
in survival mode, and I watched them, time after time,
put themselves into positions so that they're behind the eight ball.
And I figured it out once. There's freedom in not
having any options. And I think that's kind of where
(39:41):
Afra is living when she's talking about this. You know,
I like running, That's what I'm used to. She wouldn't
know what to do if things were easy.
Speaker 3 (39:51):
No, she wouldn't.
Speaker 2 (39:52):
She wouldn't.
Speaker 5 (39:53):
And I would also like to comment on the luxurious
hair they've given.
Speaker 2 (39:57):
Afra in this book.
Speaker 3 (39:58):
It is luxurious.
Speaker 2 (40:00):
He's got some product in there, looks great.
Speaker 3 (40:03):
I bet she didn't use any product, but that's just
her net.
Speaker 2 (40:05):
It's all natural. Yeah, so because.
Speaker 3 (40:07):
She's clear it's clearly grown out since the last week
saw her. So but so she buys into it, and
I like how she buys into it. This is why
I shouldn't have friends, and so, you know, so she
she freees Luke and we cut back, you know, to
uh to Gray and Luke is there. Afro was able
(40:28):
to use her knowledge of antiquity to identify a way
to disable it, which is why we were able to
retrieve it. And now that we've detained vaccine, we can
extract information about how and where he acquired this. Really
from there we may find this cadre of experimental scientists.
And you're missing, Daggers and Graces. Does she try to
run with the gauntlet?
Speaker 5 (40:47):
What does it matter? I mean, yeah, maybe she did,
but she's here.
Speaker 3 (40:50):
Now, and Lucas says, look, we wouldn't have the weapon
here without Afro, and Gray's like, hmm, well, congratulations on
a successful mention mission. Daggers, thank you, and looks offer
her a position here. Excuse me, what whatever minor penalty
you were willing to shave off of her sentence after
would probably land in prison again. Waste time and resources
(41:11):
again and inevitably break out again. We all know this,
and the Daggers need her. You set it your self, Director,
The department is suffering. You need more Afro, You need
more wins an Afra. All this department does is chase
down the same things you're compulsively drawn to. That doesn't
that doesn't that sound better? Easier than a jail break
(41:32):
right now? And crazy? I don't like it. Afram not
a huge fan either, but Skywalker has a point true
very well, very well, and they shake and cray with
just a massive joy buzzer.
Speaker 5 (41:46):
Yeah, that's exactly what it looks like, because she will
with her hand up. She is pleased to be on
your best behavior and welcome to the Daggers, doctor Affer. Yeah,
it is a joy buzzer. This you you took my tattoos?
And that is a twist I did not see. So
like every character in this book had a moment that
just made me chuckle, including Luke, who is not normally
(42:09):
a funny person. And could I just want to beg Marvel? Please,
please please, can we get an animated feature film of
this story arc? I don't even know what's gonna happen.
I just want it, and it can be directed, it
can be Disney plus, it can be streaming only. I
just want Doctor Afra. I want I want Doctor Affra
(42:30):
in motion.
Speaker 3 (42:34):
So true.
Speaker 5 (42:35):
So if this, if this first issue is is anything
to go by, this may be my favorite Doctor Afra
book yet. And each one that has come out has
been my favorite, has been better than the one that
came before, which is a credit to everybody involved and
the strength of the character.
Speaker 4 (42:51):
To me.
Speaker 3 (42:53):
Yeah, you're right, You're exactly, absolutely right.
Speaker 5 (42:56):
Yeah, So I cannot wait, cannot wait. So we will
take a short break and come back to get these
solicits for next week, and then I've got a rec
room recommendation for the week. Sweet, Okay, Matt, I believe
(43:16):
we've only got a couple of books next week.
Speaker 3 (43:19):
Correct, that is true, That is true. I believe. On
Tuesday the twenty fourth, we are getting the Star Wars
Modern era epic collection, Yoda's Secret War, which collects Star
Wars Volume two fifteen through thirty and annuals Wanted two.
But we already discussed those books many many years ago. However,
(43:43):
on June twenty fifth, we are getting Legacy Evader number
five and the High Republic Adventures, Phase three, number nineteen.
Speaker 2 (43:50):
Nice. Excellent.
Speaker 5 (43:51):
Yeah, So we'll be back next week to discuss those
two books and anything else that happens between now and then.
And for those of you who are still with us,
Matt's had a rough week, so I've got the rec
room this week flying solo. But I do have a
movie recommendation, and it's a recommendation that Matt hasn't even
seen yet, so it's a recommendation for him. I told
(44:11):
him about it a few weeks ago. My movie recommendation
is a film from two thousand and five called The Mattador.
The Mattador stars Pierce Brosnan in, in my opinion, the
role of his life, and I would be surprised if
it wasn't his favorite, or at least one of his
(44:32):
favorite roles that he's done. It was written and directed
by a guy named Richard Sheppard and Pierce bros It's
similar to Gross point Blank. Actually, I talked about that
a few weeks ago with John Cusack going back to
his high school reunion as a hitman. In this film,
Pierce Brosnan plays a hired assassin who is having a
nervous breakdown and can't cannot do the job, and he
(44:56):
meets Greg Kinnear, who plays this ad advertising marketing guy
who's in They meet in Mexico I think, I believe
in Mexico City, and he's down there with his partner
Adam Scott. Film came out two thousand and five, so
it's a very young Adam Scott as well. But they're
there to make a pitch to a company and he
and Pierce Brosen's character crosspaths in the bar and so
(45:20):
they have a kind of an adventure while they're there.
And then it cuts to six months later and Greg
can hear is back home with his wife, who has
played brilliantly by the great Hope Davis, and their dynamic
is just wonderful. And Pierce Brosnan's character shows up unannounced
at two in the morning and needs help. And that's
all I'm going to tell you. But the sound the
(45:43):
only thing that might be better than the movie itself
is the soundtrack soundtrack. It's got a town called Malice
on there, everything from that up to and including Heat
of the Moment by Asia on the same soundtrack.
Speaker 3 (45:55):
Wow.
Speaker 5 (45:56):
Yeah, it's ninety six minutes. You can you can rent it.
You can, you can rent it at anywhere that you
that you rent digital films, and it's actually, I believe,
streaming for free right now with commercials on Peacock and
Pluto TV, oh and Hoopla. So if you have any
(46:19):
of those you can watch it for free. I would
highly recommend it, and if you want to make a
double feature of that with Gross point blank, because they
are really good kind of bookends, and in this in
the same vein of gross point blank, the film itself
is just very unique. These these characters are fully fleshed out,
three dimensional characters that are unlike at the same time
(46:40):
unlike anyone you've ever met, and like everybody that you know.
They're all just eminently relatable. And Pierce Brosnan towes such
a delicate line in the film. Oh and as a bonus,
in case you needed any other incentive, Philip Baker Hall
has a small role in.
Speaker 3 (46:57):
It as well. Oh I love Philip Baker Hall about it.
Speaker 5 (47:00):
Let's fiel bigger role. So yeah, The Matador, And I'll
make a music recommendation the soundtrack. Even if you don't
have time to watch the movie, go seek out the soundtrack.
It is phenomenal. I will definitely do that and maybe
the best use of a song by the Killers ever
at the end of the movie.
Speaker 2 (47:18):
So I just Matt, Matt.
Speaker 5 (47:21):
I I will be shocked if you do not watch
it and say this is one of the best, most
fun movies I've ever seen.
Speaker 2 (47:27):
Honestly, it's that good.
Speaker 5 (47:31):
And that will do it, and that will do it
for this edition of Star Wars slash Page. So until
next week, I'm j just.
Speaker 3 (47:39):
I am Matt made of course.
Speaker 5 (47:42):
Always the Star Wars Splash Page theme song is Mark
Hamill can handle about Chris Cape. Check Chris out at
chriscape dot com and on sound cloud, on Twitter for escape,
and on Facebook.
Speaker 3 (48:26):
But stop paying
