Speaker 1 (00:00):
You're listening to Star Wars splash Page comics in.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
Review jeff It's episode number four hundred and sixty three,
How are you, sir, digny.

Speaker 3 (00:12):
On the stage. I'm hoping gonna be as beer found
park On. I don't want sets running the gatta scenes.

Speaker 1 (00:34):
I'm better than I was four hundred and sixty two
episodes ago. Oh yeah, which is to say things are
only getting better exactly exactly.

Speaker 2 (00:47):
Thank goodness for Star Wars comics, because the real world
is getting real.

Speaker 1 (00:51):
Yes, yes it is, Oh dear. I didn't get to
see any new movies this weekend because it was tax
free weekend here in Texas, and when that happens, I
stay away from public places.

Speaker 2 (01:03):
Oh I don't blame you.

Speaker 1 (01:04):
Yeah, so, but we did watch Pam had never seen
the movie Duets. Have you ever seen that one?

Speaker 2 (01:11):
Oh? Yeah, with oh yeah, of course it's got Yeah, yeah,
I love that movie.

Speaker 1 (01:16):
Had not seen it since I saw it in theaters
in two thousand and the fact. So basically this movie
is Pam's over the top. Over the top is my
is my my guilty pleasure? That is not a guilty
pleasure at all. And I knew she was gonna love
it because she loves karaoke, and the fact that she
had never heard of the movie, much less seen it
speaks to how poorly it was received at the box

(01:37):
office and how poorly promoted it has been for the
last twenty five years. But it's available on Amazon Prime,
so if you do want to check it out. It's
a really really sweet movie with some really good music.

Speaker 2 (01:47):
It is a really sweet movie. And believe it or not,
Gwyneth Paltrow's cover of Betty Davis Eyes is actually remarkably good.

Speaker 1 (01:58):
That one and Maria cover of What is It? I
Can't Make You Love Me?

Speaker 2 (02:04):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (02:05):
Oh yeah, I never had never keyed in on until
last night. That is phenomenal as well. And of course
everything he would, he would. Lewis can do no wrong.

Speaker 2 (02:11):
In my eyes, no he cannot. And of course, you know,
as I have told you privately outside of the podcast,
Paul Giamatti is probably my favorite American actor.

Speaker 1 (02:23):
That which is a yeah, which is a very very
defensible position.

Speaker 2 (02:26):
So but yeah, he's just you know, I love and
who his dad is, right, I should know. I You've
told him. Good for it.

Speaker 1 (02:33):
A Bartlett Giamatti, the former Commissioner of Baseball, the one
who handed down Pete Rose's lifetime ban.

Speaker 2 (02:40):
That's the one that's the one so well.

Speaker 1 (02:45):
Right, So I just wanted to share that with everybody.
It's not necessarily a rec room. I just said that
happened this weekend. I wanted to I hadn't seen it
in a long time, and then watch Night at the
Museum tonight before we recorded, I hadn't seen that one
in nineteen years. That movie will be twenty years old
next year.

Speaker 2 (02:59):
That holds up, it really does. How fitting you watched
it on today at the anniversary of Robin Williamstuff.

Speaker 1 (03:04):
Yes, and didn't even realize it until we had started it.

Speaker 2 (03:09):
I really do miss Robin.

Speaker 1 (03:10):
I do too, And that performance in particular is one
that I don't think you got enough credit for because
it's so expertly modulated. There's just enough Robin Williams in
it to keep it interesting, but it never feels like
anybody other than Teddy.

Speaker 2 (03:23):
Roosevelt exactly exactly.

Speaker 1 (03:26):
So well, that's movie talk for the week, folks. I
hope you enjoyed it. We'll be back next to kidding.
We have one comic book to discuss this week from
Marvel Jedi Knights issue number six. But Matt, what kind
of news have we got for the week?

Speaker 2 (03:38):
Not a whole lot. Go to the Facebook page or
god forbid, the Blue Sky feed and you can find
unlettered preview pages for September third, Star Wars Hans Solo
Hunt for the Falcon, number one of five Lando Action
amongst those pages. And of course, one of the really

(04:00):
great pages it that's on there, and this is all
art by Ramon Rosanana rosannas Uh, is that one of
the inset panels shows Han looking at pictures on his
desk of Leyah uh he and Leah with baby Ben
and a photo of a very tall beIN next to Han.
So just kind of like oh times at the her

(04:24):
So you know, definitely, you know, you know, go to
the go to the Facebook page to check that out.
So other than that, there is a whole raft of
new new variant covers for Doctor Afrik Chaos Agent number four,
Star Wars Uh number I believe, number five uh. And
then we got finally the first look at Cara Andrews

(04:45):
variant cover for Boba Fett Black white and red number one,
and it is incredible nice. So yeah, it's it's been
a while, so it's a variant cover maybe go by,
but so check it out there and that is fortunately

(05:05):
for now all the news. That's the print.

Speaker 1 (05:09):
All right, Well, with that, we will take a short
break me back to discuss Jedi Knights number six from Marvel.

Speaker 2 (05:17):
Absolutely we will, all right.

Speaker 1 (05:25):
Jedi Knights number six. I'm still I'm still not sure
how I feel about this book, Matt. It's really hit
or miss. I enjoyed this week's book. But spoiler alert,
this one could just be titled man Qui Gon likes
getting stabbed. Yeah he will, saying he will run into

(05:53):
your laid with his mid section. Give him the chant,
the opportunity, so don't worry about that. I'm sorry you
were saying.

Speaker 2 (05:59):
It's pretty clear that he was not paying attention to
Count Dooku when he was learning how to dodge and
perry so when sword fighting. So but yeah, well you
know again, to me, this is one of my favorite
books because it's just it's it's like a TV show.
I mean you, I think you could literally take every

(06:20):
every issue so far that Mark Guggenheim has written and
adapt it as an animated show on Disney Blas.

Speaker 1 (06:29):
You know what I'm going to start reading the books
with that in mind, because I'll probably enjoy it more
that way, I think you will.

Speaker 2 (06:34):
It gives it a lot more, It seasons it, so
to speak. So uh, before we get too deep into
this one, This, of course, is Jedi Knights number six.
The issue is The issue title is Cinsara. It's written
by Mark Guggenheim. Art is by Manta Beech, Mussabekov. Luis
Guerrero is the color artist Virtual Killer of these. Clayton

(06:57):
Coles is handling the letters. The cover artists are Mattamchmussa
Bakoff and Jesus of Bersav. There are variant There's an
Alan Kwa variant. There's a Chris Sprause Carl's story in
Niron neiraj Menon Revenge of the Sith twentieth anniversary variant.
Dan Jurgens, Brett Breeding and Laura Martin have a Classic

(07:17):
Action homage variant, and Torren Clark has a Lightsaber variant.
Book designer is Carlos Lau. The assistant editors are Mikey J.
Basso and Drew Baumgardner. The editor is Mark Benicia and
CB Sabalski is the editor in chief. Lucas Olm. We
have Robert Simpson the senior editor, Grace Auris the associate editor,

(07:40):
Michael Sigling creative director, Troy Alders the art director, Phil
Shostack the creative art manager, and from the story group
we have Pablo Hoodalgo, Matt Martin, and Emily mccannie. So
this is another one of the sort of one and
done stories, you know, as each issue kind of basically
is I mean, you know, there's this overarching high end,

(08:01):
uh you know, you know, we and you know, and
this one does give us a cliffhanger, so to speak.

Speaker 1 (08:06):
That's why I was thinking, is this really yeah.

Speaker 2 (08:09):
No, kind of but yeah. Jedi Master Fondar Etsy's has
died on the agricultural planet of Mina Rau. An honor Gar,
comprised of Jedi knights Mace Windu, Qui, gon Jen and
Isla Sekura, has been dispatched to recover his remains and
return them for cremation on Chorasant. But a dark secret
looms over the circumstances of Etsy's death, and the three

(08:31):
Jedi may well be walking into a trap. Dun dun, dun.
It is that's the exactly part and that's essentially what
it is you know, it's this is a planet that
is literally it's just it's very agrarian. Uh, it's all,
you know, just fields as far as the eye can
see with of course, and of course it's being Star Wars.

(08:52):
You know. The harvesting is being done by rather large machines,
you know, that are literally vacuuming up the I guess
thee of the wheat. Uh. And you know we see
our our Jedi knights, we see Mace and Qaui Gon
and Ala they've shown up and you know, they've landed
and they're approaching the city and they're being led you
know by sort of a I don't want to say

(09:14):
the planet leader, but you know obviously you know one
of the wardens and what is that? Oh that, oh
that there's one of our combines they help them the harvest
and oh that's the most impressive. Well, well, thank you.

Speaker 1 (09:24):
A question. I have a question that you may or
may not know the answer to Alo Sekura always having
a bare midriff. Is that a cultural thing or is
that just the artists drawing her that way?

Speaker 2 (09:36):
I think that is because of the way she appeared
in the movies.

Speaker 1 (09:39):
Which and which, which again begs a question is that
a cultural thing? Because it does just doesn't seem like
something you would wear on an honor guard sort of trip.
But I'm probably just being pedantic.

Speaker 2 (09:50):
You are very pedantic. I mean that's what that's what
Ala wears, not all Twilight's dress, you know, you know,
exposed midrid. I mean, you know Haarra doesn't do that.

Speaker 1 (09:59):
That's a good point.

Speaker 2 (10:00):
Good point. So it's just it's just a it's just
an an alea choice.

Speaker 1 (10:05):
But I did like Chekhov's combines.

Speaker 2 (10:09):
Uh, they are are pretty nice. They're pretty nice, aren't they.
So this is the Magistrate Cadiva and uh, you know
he is uh clearly honored to have Mace and Ala
and Qui Gon there because, as he says, you know,
master Essis became a beloved figure here and alas like, well,
my understanding is that Master Etsy's assignment to Mina Raw
was a recent one. Yes, he was instrumental deal with

(10:33):
a group of bandits who had been stealing our crop yield.
And of course Qui Gon and you know, and it's
great because the way Mark has described each of the Jedi,
you know, get Mace winduw calm into storm Alo Secura
Tree like demonstrates superior leadership abilities. And then we have
Qui Gon Qui gon Jen non conformist and you don't
believe the bandits were responsible for Master ETSI's death. Let
him see how it could be. He was quite heroic

(10:55):
and successful at driving them off. And we get a
you know, an action scene of mass Etsy's being very
heroic and swinging that lightsaber round and around. Uh and
uh and if you don't mind my saying, his years
were rather advanced, and you know, and we see him
laid out and yeah, he looks old, very old, and
so uh Aila leans over says, you know, see Thikul

(11:18):
Puss at the Eco Final arrest and you know she's
being spiritual. Meanwhile, Qui gon is just, you know, kind
of glaring and staring around at things, and Masa's like,
what is it, Qui gon my sense of darkness surrounding
Master Etsy's remains, and is like, I don't say it's anything. Well,
no dub and alsis, nor do I I trust my instincts.

(11:42):
Master Etsy's was murdered. So they cut to Etsy's ship,
which is parked in the fields. Because you know, why
wouldn't it.

Speaker 1 (11:49):
Be there's an r V that's kind of what I thought.

Speaker 2 (11:54):
Literally literally you know it's you know, it's the Jedi
win in Bago. Yeah, and you know they're walking around
the Shevell. You know, nothing appears to be disturbed. And
you know Mace's you know, looking at KAUI go, what
are you doing? I took a blood sample from Master Eths.
Apparently he was poisoned. So right then and there, clearly
Qui Guns lack of a better term, kink is drawing

(12:18):
blood from people right right.

Speaker 1 (12:21):
And I'm glad that they identified him as Qui Gone,
because I'm not sure it would have it would have
recognized him otherwise. The the art on this one that
I think his brow is too prominent for this to
be a younger Liam Neeson.

Speaker 2 (12:31):
To Yeah, and he and he's got a lot of
he's got a lot of frowning going on. You know,
he's he is his forehead is very pinched, you know,
just like yeah, uh and you know, so he's you know,
he you know, runs an analyst and an analysis and
and you know, apparently he was poisoned and by autoxin
I've never seen before fast acting and violent and appearance,
and al Is just like, well, from what I know

(12:53):
of the Quillian bandits poisoning is not in their reputation. No,
I believe Master Etsis was felt by someone else, and
Mays goes, well, for what reason, I don't know, but
we should not leave Mina Rau without an answer to
that question. And you know, and I could just hear
the orchestral accompaniment to this issue, right, you know, So
we cut the later and they you know, the magistrate

(13:16):
apparently has joined them aboard Eensy's ship, and Alis is like, well,
I've reviewed the ship's entry exit logs. No one other
than Master Edsy's has been an inn or out since
it left Coruson, and Maces just like, well, when whoever
poison them had to have done so on the outside.
And the magistrate is this is very disturbing. As I said,
Master Edsey's was held in the highest regard. I can't
imagine anyone on Mina Row, but we should harm and

(13:38):
Qui gon ever just you know, just the conspiracist. It's
a big planet, magistrate, and Alis is like, well, is
it possible one of your citizens was acting on the
Bandit's behalf and Mas adds payback for driving them off. Oh,
I suppose as possible. But Masters, please remember mina Row
is a farming world inhabited by simple farming, and if

(14:01):
there is one among our number capable of murder, I
strained to imagine who it could be. So basically what
the magistrate is saying this is Mace talking to Alas.
You know, they're walking through the fields, you know, and
this is great because they're walking through a pathway, and
on each side of them and then behind them are
just essentially, you know, just thinking, you know, just to say,

(14:23):
you know, dump truck walkers. Yeah, you know, carrying bales
of wheat that have been all bailed up. So is
that we're looking for a needle in a literal planet
full of haystacks? And Alas like, well, perhaps we should
consider another possibility, and Mays is like, you've got my attention, accident.
This is an agrarian world, one replete with all forms

(14:44):
of in sected plant life. For all we know, Master
etsays came upon something that is entirely harmless to the
indigenous population and a.

Speaker 1 (14:52):
Reasonable, perfectly reasonable, uh supposition.

Speaker 2 (14:56):
Yeah, and then you know, so Mace looks at QUI
gone careful just immediately goes into his fighting stance and
ignites its blake. There's danger here, and it was like,
I'm not sensing anything. And and then Mace is like
huh and they just drop boom boom, And you know,
we see Mace in the bottom of the page with
his lightsaber up and he's ready for action. And it's

(15:18):
the assassin. He jumps he I mean, it's almost like
he's like a tornado out of the out of the
wheat field. Yeah, you know, with his with his evening
blades and just you and they start dueling, you know, crash,
boom bah, into the into the into the wheat fields that,
surprising me, do not catch fire, despite the fact that
the why God is swinging out, swinging around his giant,

(15:38):
enormous green lighter.

Speaker 1 (15:40):
I assume that it's it's so hot that it just
cauterizes everything so nothing around it burns.

Speaker 2 (15:46):
Well, all right, well, you know, look, we suspend a
lot of physics, and remember it's fake and it's in space.

Speaker 1 (15:51):
So so yeah, you did say laser sword, so yeah,
but we.

Speaker 2 (15:55):
Do get two great pages of these guys going at it,
and and they are going tode to know they are
an equal match. Uh you know, they you know, nobody's
getting nobody's landing any really severe blows.

Speaker 4 (16:07):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (16:07):
And then of course as they're fighting, you know, there's
a and Qui, oh what now and he looks up
and one of the harvesters that's coming through. It's a
massive harvester.

Speaker 1 (16:17):
Check check out's harvester. Like I said, yeah, what's going
on for? I love that they that they've made a
perfect crop circle while they're fighting as well.

Speaker 2 (16:27):
Oh yeah, oh yeah, and uh so you know so
so you know, so the assassin flies up and you know, Quais,
oh damn the blazes. So Qui go jumps and leaps
up and they both you know, jump to the harvester.
You killed master Etsy's did you you poisoned him? Uh yeah?
Uh uh to draw me out, to bring me here,

(16:49):
and we get this page with this unusual panels.

Speaker 1 (16:53):
It's all emanating up from the bottom left corner.

Speaker 2 (16:55):
Yeah. Out it's like rays of light. You know, it's
just and it's and it's it's visually appealing.

Speaker 1 (17:03):
It's very cool. Yeah, and and and a good way
to break up the action. And then Qui Gon just
keeps talking, you know, so you can kill me or
try to. And this guy's person is not answering, is
what is your quarrel with me? Why are you hunting me?
I don't even know you. And then he says Correless Wrath.

Speaker 2 (17:22):
That gets his attention, and he turns around and he.

Speaker 1 (17:25):
Tells me he learned his name. Why why haven't What
I haven't learned is why you want me dead? And
so the first time we've met you was on Bakura.

Speaker 2 (17:36):
So and so we get a little bit of backstory,
you know, from what you've seen, from what we've read
so far in the first five in the prior five issues. Right, So,
because this is the unifying arc of this whole series,
is why Correless Wrath is trying to kill Qui Gon,
you know. And so so you know, qu I gotta
Get is very angry. You know, why are you doing this?

(17:57):
Swing the blade? Swing the blade? Shut shut. Corless drops
to a knee and then he looks up. You know,
we get this deep inset panel on Corless and then
one on Qui Goun, and then we get closer on
to Corlis and he just Sensara and this shocks Qui gone.
He's like, wait, what I mean he's stunned and that

(18:20):
gives Corless all the time he needs. What did you say,
Corliss comes running at him with both both blades.

Speaker 1 (18:28):
Should both of them straight through?

Speaker 2 (18:30):
Yep? Yeah, full as him.

Speaker 1 (18:32):
We're pretty sure he survives because we're because this happens
before the Phantom Menace where we spoilers see him die.

Speaker 2 (18:38):
Yeah. And although this this, this, this full pay this
full splash page is nice because we we do get
a nice look at Cordless as the little little ankle rockets.

Speaker 1 (18:47):
Yes, so he jumps off, leaves Qui Gon laying there,
he's a Sin Sinsara. Camera pulls out and that's the
end of the issue.

Speaker 2 (18:57):
Yeah. So and then so obviously I love the preview
page for Jedi Knights number seven. Why God Jena is
dead or he will be if Jedi Knights mace win
to an Ali Sakura can't find the antidote to the
poison that is killing him. The antidote can only be
found on Sin Sara, the most dangerous planet you've never

(19:18):
heard of it? But what is the mysterious connection since
Sara has with why God Gen's fast? So you know, Okay,
I'm hooked, I'm really looking forward to the next issue.

Speaker 1 (19:31):
So I am too. Like I said, I'm kind of
I've been kind of hit or miss on this one.
But you know that, like I said, that thinking of
it as a TV show really will help.

Speaker 2 (19:40):
It really does.

Speaker 1 (19:41):
It really does, it really does. So Goad, great, great book.
We're going to take another short break. We'll be back
to discuss Solicis for next week, and then we will
be right back cool what I was saying there, Okay,
mad if I'm not mistaken, we have one book to

(20:02):
review next week and one other book that's a collection,
is that correct?

Speaker 2 (20:05):
You are correct? Yeah. Tuesday, August nineteenth sees the High
Republic Adventures Phase three trade paperback Volume four, which will
collect issues fourteen for sixteen and the Battle Area Do

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
